Happy December! First off, we’ve made it to the final month of 2018! How is that possible? And secondly, it’s the most wonderful time of the year! We’re well into the holiday season at this point, but December brings a whole new feeling with it. It’s cold, the holidays are in full swing, and it’s a month of festivities and family, love and sweet treats, full of sparkling lights and traditions. It’s such a beautiful month in so many ways and I am thrilled it’s here! If you’re like me, there’s a good chance that you’re not quite done with your holiday shopping. We’re here to help! Take a read through the 2018 Holiday Gift Guide where you’ll find something for everyone: gifts for him, gifts for her, stocking stuffers and more. Each item is from a local store. We always encourage you to purchase local when and where you can – it helps this city continue to thrive! Join us in purchasing at least one item off your list from a locally owned store this year – it makes all the difference.
congratulations regardless of the outcome, because making it in the Top 5 is a huge testament to your work and your business, and you should be proud. Before December wraps up, because we all know it’s going to fly by in the blink of an eye, make it a point to get out there with family or friends and partake in one of OKC’s great December adventures. You can find a wonderful list of things to do in this issue. There is nothing that can replace memories with your loved ones and favorite people. It’s one of the most precious things we have in life, and we should never take it for granted. This holiday season I hope you enjoy old traditions and make new ones. And never forget that the season isn’t about the material gifts, it’s about the gift of love and connection and the memories that mean so much. That’s priceless. I hope you have the merriest of Christmases and a very happy holiday!
Speaking of which, thousands of you made a difference in our 2018 Okie Honor nominations this year! Thousands of nominations rolled through in November for your favorite local places and people. You can now see who’s made it to the Top 5 in this Lots of love, issue. You can vote in who you think is the #1 in each category December 1-15! Good luck to all of you and

PuppyMONTH OF THE
MEET WALLY!
Owner: Diana Dean Say hello to Mr. Wally, aka Walter P. McGee, aka Wallace, aka Walter Mitty. Yes, he’ll answer to just about any of those. He is a four-yearold, 97-pound German Wire-Haired Pointer mixed with Lab. One of Wally’s favorite things on planet Earth is a car ride. He requests at least one daily, and he knows when it’s the weekend because the rides start earlier! Another way to make his day: give him a rawhide bone and he’ll play keep-away with you for hours. Swimming at Paw Park is his dream vacation, and he enjoys napping in his very own queen-sized bed every afternoon (as evidenced by the bed being “unmade” every evening!). His talent? He’s a weatherman in his own right. He can let his human know of impending storms further in advance than the local weather stations. He is a gentle soul with more personality and character than you can even imagine. 50

EATS We’re just going to go out on a limb and declare that OKC has some of the best, if not THE best, Mexican food in the nation. You probably have your running list of local favorites, and you’re going to want to go ahead and add Hacienda Taco in Northpark Mall to that list. Hacienda Taco is a little unexpected in the best way possible. From the décor to the menu, it puts its own unique twist on Tex-Mex. We love so many different little things about this place. For starters, everything is always fresh and always made in-house from scratch. All of their meats are smoked on hardwood – that is not common in Tex-Mex, but it’s unbelievably tasty. Their menu has a little bit of everything, for everyone. You’ll find the classics in the starters, like DIY Guacamole, house-made chips (extra crunchy goodness), and different kinds of quesos and salsas. You’ll probably be pretty full after this, but keep on truckin’ – there are too many good things to stop. While we don’t always recommend opting for the salad at a Mexican restaurant, because ideally you’ll be shoving your face with chips, cheese, and more cheese, their taco salad cannot be overlooked. It’s a massive fried flour tortilla shell that’s about as big as a football helmet, packed full with goodies and topped with one of the most delicious ranch dressings you’ve ever tasted (that’s important). For a place with taco in its name, obviously you have to try the street tacos. They have around seven different taco flavors at a time and they are all delicious. Another surprise on the menu that you must try: the Green Chile Cheeseburger. Yes, a burger at a Tex-Mex joint – trust us. It’s so unexpectedly tasty that you might just find yourself stopping into this taco shop for their burger. This place was started by one of the creators of the beloved S&B Burgers, so you know it’s good. Hacienda Taco is so much more than just tacos. Whether you’re stopping here with the kiddos, for a date night, or for drinks after work with the girls – Hacienda Taco will be one of your new favorite spots in Northwest OKC. This is definitely a spot to taco ’bout (sorry, we had to). 52

CHA E CAFÉ & E AT E RY 7300 N. WESTERN AVE., OKC, OK 73116 405.840.7725 | INSTAGRAM.COM/CHAEOKC Locals were devastated when Chae Modern Korean closed earlier this year, but it has found a new home with owner Daniel Chae’s other beloved eatery, All About Cha on Western. Daniel separated himself from the All About Cha franchise to bring the best of All About Cha and Chae together in one spot. With this new makeover, you can get coffee, tea and sweets as well as plenty of Chae’s savory options, like brunch items, salads, sandwiches and tacos. You can’t get Korean Short Rib Benedict anywhere else, let alone into the late evening. They also now have the ability to bring in more local ingredients and offerings. We love how diverse this menu is. You can order your typical latte, but pair it with a unique California Roll Sandwich and you’ll have the best of both worlds.
O S O PASE O 603 N.W. 28TH ST., OKC, OK 73103 405.309.8226 | OSOPASEO.COM The highly anticipated addition to the Paseo is finally here. Say hello to OSO Paseo! This extremely trendy spot (inside and out) is putting an emphasis on craft cocktails and fresh tacos. You’ll find 14 different types of tacos with fillings that include everything from the traditional to the not-so-traditional, like cauliflower. While tacos might be the star of the show, they have plenty of other delicious options that shouldn’t be overlooked, like their unique raw tuna tostadas with a little Asian flair and their vegan enchiladas. The menu has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, and whatever you do, don’t skip out on their craft cocktails. Made from scratch with the most delicious ingredients, they’re a must-try. You might feel like you’ve been transported to somewhere like Palm Springs, but you’ll be enjoying these delicious craft Mexican dishes in the heart of the Paseo.
NED’S STARLIT E LOUNGE 7301 N. MAY AVE., OKC, OK 73116 405.242.6100 | FACEBOOK.COM/NEDSSTARLITELOUNGE The infamous Nomad II building finally has a new resident, and it’s the newest creation from the owner of the beloved Ned’s Catering: Ned’s Starlite Lounge. The menu boasts favorites like steak, sandwiches, a chicken fried steak sandwich, hamburgers and more. The building’s inside has been overhauled to bring out a retro vibe, and if you have the time, make sure you find a seat at the retro bar and enjoy one of their craft cocktails. They have both classic and unique cocktail options, and all are delicious. Pair it with a delicious appetizer like their chicken wings. Another must-try is their Arancini – melted mozzarella mixed with risotto, dipped in breadcrumbs and fried. It rests on a bed of roasted garlic-tomato reduction that is heavenly. This is a classic, but we love Ned’s unbelievably decadent spin on it. This place is filled with a lot of love, as well as decades of food skills and knowledge that don’t go unnoticed.
S HAWA RMA & CO 146000 N. PENN. AVE., SUITE A, OKC, OK 73134 405.286.1646 | SHAWARMAANDCOMPANY.COM Authentic Mediterranean street food has made its way to northwest OKC and we are beyond thrilled. Shawarma & Co is the newest spot serving up homemade Mediterranean classics like hummus, falafel, salads, shawarma, wraps, pita and more. They have a great menu that includes options like classic chicken shawarma, as well as their own spin on Americanized shawarma, like their Philly beef shawarma. You’ll also find bowl options, which we love for those who can’t have pita. They’re as delicious as the platters, but in a bowl with your choice of rice or lettuce, protein, toppings, sauce and two sides. They have plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, which is great! Their menu is extremely reasonably priced. You get a ton of food and a lot of options. This place is so authentic and so delicious, we have a feeling it may become one of your weekly stops.

CITIZENS CARING FOR CHILDREN
Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.
8,314 CHILDREN are currently in DHS custody, and typically their basic needs are also their greatest wants.
Citizens Caring for Children meets the needs of more than 1,600 OKLAHOMA CHILDREN in foster care each year.
They offer programs like RESOURCE CENTER, BACK2SCHOOL and JOY4KIDS.
88 CENTS of every dollar donated goes directly to programs benefiting the children.
For more than 30 years, Citizens Caring for Children has provided for children living in foster care by meeting their material, emotional and intellectual needs. CCC is committed to providing hope, changing lives and creating healthy futures for children in foster care. Over 8,000 children are currently in DHS custody in the state of Oklahoma. When children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care, they often leave behind all of their belongings. Oftentimes what these children want the most are the things that will fulfill their basic needs, like clothing, shelter, food, and school supplies. Citizens Caring for Children offers great programs like their Back2School program, in which more than 600 children and young adults in foster care are paired with volunteers to pick out school supplies and the perfect back-to-school outfit. At the Resource Center, available by appointment only, children can receive a bag containing items like shampoo, toothpaste, a blanket, a stuffed animal, books and more. This holiday season you can make these kids’ month even brighter by providing a Christmas or holiday for them with Joy4Kids. There are so many kids in serious need that had no choice or say in their current home situation. With the help of Citizens Caring for Children, we can all make a difference.
HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE
You can donate monetarily with monthly donations or onetime donations. Just $50 buys 5 pairs of new shoes for these children. In-kind donations of new items such as pajamas, socks and underwear, and toiletry items are also welcome at the Resource Center. You can see their entire list online.
VOLUNTEER
You can volunteer at Citizens Caring for Children through their various programs like Back2School and Joy4Kids. They also welcome volunteers for helping with events, organizing inventory, stuffing and sorting mail, or serving on a committee, just to name a few. You can fill out an application on their website.
