Hello Fellow Okies!

I’m so excited this issue is now on the stands and we finally get to reveal all the results of the Okie Honor Awards voting. I still can’t believe the massive amounts of participation from Okies everywhere. It has been so cool to see the votes come in daily and see firsthand who were voted #1. After two months of receiving tens of thousands of nominations, and after 30 days of voting, we finally have our #1’s for you! First, I would like to congratulate all the people and businesses that were voted #1 in their industry. We are very proud to present each of you to our readers as the 2015 Okie Honor winners. A local Oklahoma artist will be hand-making personalized plaques out of recycled wood, so keep an eye out around town. I would also like to give special recognition to all the people and businesses that were among the top five in each category. Each one of the top five are obviously highly regarded by Okies everywhere. Finally, thank you to everyone who picked up the magazine, followed the

Okie Honor Awards, and voted and promoted your favorites. It means a lot to us that we have so many loyal readers and supporters that helped make this first year a tremendous success! One thing that this year’s Okie Honor Awards has showed me is how passionately supportive our great community is for the people and businesses throughout our city. It makes me very proud to call myself a fellow Okie! Next time you visit one of the winners of our 2015 Okie Honor Awards, please congratulate them as you enjoy what makes them #1 in Oklahoma.

EATS Tucked away in the cozy and eclectic Paseo Arts District, Picasso Café is serving up delicious creations by master and commander of the kitchen, Chef Ryan Parrott. Having been in business for the last six years, Picasso Café has grown into a major favorite in the area, especially among those with dietary needs like gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian. Roughly half of the items on the menu are vegetarian and some can be altered to be made vegan. The meatless options are so delicious, they regularly get ordered by non-vegetarians. One of my favorite things about Picasso’s (besides the delicious food) is that many of their ingredients come from local vendors, including Savory Spice Shop and Prairie Thunder Baking Company (and many more). It’s a day-maker when you see local businesses supporting each other, and when the end result comes out as tasty and creative as Picasso’s dishes, it’s a major win. Talented and well-known Chef Ryan Parrott crafted the menu with bold flavors, fun twists on classic favorites, and a menu choice for just about everyone. Picasso’s homey and eclectic atmosphere, along with the inviting staff, immediately sets you at ease – you almost feel like you’re having dinner at home with close family and friends.

GREAT FOOD IS AN ART

Picasso’s seems to always be filled with people who are lovers of food, drinks and fun (our kind of place!). This eatery is perfect for a Saturday morning brunch, an after-work drink with friends or a special celebratory dinner. Each dish we tried was beautifully plated and had flavors to match. Picasso’s was nothing short of delicious and we can’t wait to visit again.

What We Tasted: Fried Goat Cheese Tempura battered, local honey

Seared Ahi Tuna Picasso greens, candied garlic, rosemary olive oil, soy

Tacos from the Sea Choice of ahi tuna or grilled shrimp, spicy aioli, napa cabbage slaw, warm corn tortillas

Spaghetini Almond–sun-dried tomato pesto, spinach, crushed red chili, burrata cheese, basil

COOKING WITH CHEF MINH NGUYEN

MISO-GLAZED COD

INGREDIENTS • • • • •

2 cups miso 2 cups sugar 1 cup mirin 1-6 pieces of cod filet 1 ⁄2 cup sake

CHEF MINH: MUSASHI'S Chef Minh, born in Vietnam, has been a chef for the last 23 years. He got his start in Canada and moved to Oklahoma in 2000, and soon started working at Western Concepts. His favorite thing about being a chef is that he can continue learning new things every day and working with people. Chef Minh loves to be creative in the kitchen.

PREPARATION 1.

Combine ingredients in a mixing bowl or Ziploc bag and mix until well combined.

2.

Let cod pieces marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

3.

Take the bowl or bag out of the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.

4.

Heat up a grill or pan to medium heat and sear the skin side until crisp. Flip to the other side and let fish continue cooking until opaque all the way through the middle, roughly 6-8 minutes per filet.

5.

Serve immediately with white rice or a fresh salad.

LIVE BIG TUCKED IN THE HEART OF OKLAHOMA CITY, J. MARSHALL SQUARE IS BRINGING A NEW KIND OF LIVING TO THE COMMUNITY. The beloved old John Marshall High School land is now home to the next big thing. J. Marshall Square is a Big House™ concept. What’s that, you ask? It’s a townhome-style community designed to incorporate all the convenience of an apartment without losing the amenities of a house. These creations are made to be almost a hybrid of an apartment, townhome and single-family home living: the best of all three worlds. Here you have the wonderful amenities of hassle-free apartment-style living, but everything you would expect with a house. For example, you’ll find direct access garages (each unit has its own garage, how amazing is that?!), as well as small but meaningful features like residential front porch light fixtures and cozy balcony areas. J. Marshall Square is the metro’s first Big House™ concept of its kind in Oklahoma City and just the third in the state overall.

34

so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2016

J. Marshall Square will start opening in phases beginning March 2016, and we can’t wait for the public to see what a gem this community is. Each and every unit comes with modern designs, including wood flooring, granite countertops, black appliances and an LED flame fireplace! Talk about WOW. This gated community doesn’t stop at the impressive in-home features: It has state-of-theart amenities, like an outdoor theater area with TVs and surround sound, a gorgeous clubhouse with a Well Beats Virtual Fitness Class center (it’s amazing, you should check it out!), a fantastic pool, a Bark Park (get it? It’s an unbelievable dog park), serene fire pits, a kitchen that serves up free Starbucks coffee, and so much more. They didn’t leave out a single detail. J. Marshall Square is straight out of the future, but it’s here and it’s now. This style of living is here to stay. In a world mostly occupied by baby boomers and millennials, the Big House™ concept is an ideal fit for many. Millennials are finally in the housing market after college or after saving up enough money from working, and many baby boomers are ready to downsize but don’t want to compromise much square footage or the amenities of a home. J. Marshall Square sits in a perfect location, close to the ever-growing Nichols Hills area on the northwest side of town. This is a one-of-a-kind spot that we can’t wait for you to see, and hopefully live in! Ever wanted to be a part of something BIG? This is it.

HOME Design Trends with Silver Stone Homes

Silver Stone Homes is a dynamic company utilizing technology and the newest designs to create a home that will last a lifetime. The brand-new design center showcases many unique design ideas from the latest trends, pictured below.

COUNTERTOPS & BACKSPLASHES

It seems as if everywhere you turn there is some form of marble-looking countertop, real or not, and in almost any room, from the kitchen to a buffet table, to conference rooms and bathrooms. While real-deal marble may be too expensive or a nuisance to take care of, many other materials can take on the look of marble, like quartz or granite, and we LOVE it. We can’t get enough of the usual gray and white marble, but we’re also loving the different color tones and options available in the design.

The Marble Look Is In

FUNKY BACKSPLASH

Say goodbye to the typical square beige tiles and say hello to textures, patterns and color! We don’t have anything against square beige tiles, it’s just that with so many fun options nowadays, why limit a focal point in your kitchen? We love this dark gray to accent the marble look with a fun design – it’s anything but boring. Mixing colors and patterns between the backsplash and countertops is a fun way to make a statement in your kitchen.

CEILINGS

Who said you had to keep the ceiling flat? No one! The architectural design and creativity that is put into house-building nowadays is amazing. Designers don’t stop at the house and room shape itself, but go all the way down to the shape and style of the ceiling. Check these creative and stylish designs out:

KITCHEN

To us (and many might agree), the kitchen is the heart of the home. So many experiences and memories revolve around food, cooking together or even just gathering in the kitchen. We love the open kitchen concept with a large island in the middle for chopping, washing or sitting. Also, a double oven is a must if you’re an entertainer. I don’t think stainless steel is ever going to go out of style. If you’re wanting to add a pop of color try for fun vases, utensil holders or even hand towels.

LIVING

A trend we often see now in living rooms is a sitting area that mixes furniture in a solid color with patterned furniture, sometimes of the same color scheme. We love it! It’s a way to add balance to a room but still keep it unique. Pull the sitting area together with a large area rug. Want your ceilings to look taller? Hang your curtains all the way to the ceiling (or close), even if the window doesn’t reach that high, to create the illusion of vaulted ceilings. Voilà!

WHAT VINEGAR CAN DO:

AROUND THE HOUSE Remove carpet spills and stains: Use a mixture of 1 teaspoon vinegar, 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap (like blue Dawn) and 1 cup warm water. Spray on stain and scrub out. You can dry it with a hairdryer set on low.

Clean metal: Dissolve 1 teaspoon salt in 1 cup vinegar and add at least 1⁄4 cup flour (or more) to make a paste. Apply the paste to the silver, copper, brass, etc. and let stand for at least 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water and polish with a soft cloth.

Clean the coffeemaker: Run a few cycles of vinegar through the coffee machine and follow up with a few cycles of water. This will ensure it’s clean and no hard coffee build-up or stains remain.

Remove smells: Hands smell like onion or garlic after cooking? Wipe your hands with vinegar to remove the smell.

Clean the microwave: Put 1⁄2 cup vinegar and 1 cup water in a microwave-safe bowl, then place in the microwave and cook long enough to boil. It will remove odors and loosen any baked-on food from the walls, and you can wipe it right off.

PUPPY OF THE MONTH BEARDED COLLIE The Bearded Collie is a breed often seen on dog shows, and it’s one that leaves viewers wondering if there is a dog underneath all of that hair! Many of these dogs are groomed to have their hair extremely long, down to the ground, but some owners choose to keep the fur cut short. These pups are also charismatic and smart, and are generally healthy. They are extremely loyal dogs that love to be outside in all weather conditions. 42

HOME HACKS Clip Your Chargers Sick of your charger bending or falling to the floor? Attach a binder clip to the side of your table or nightstand and thread the charger through the clips. Ta-da! No more slipping.

Slip-Proofing

FUN

To give a rug some traction, flip it over and apply lines of acrylic-latex caulk every 6 inches or so. Once it’s dry, you can flip it back over and use! The rubbery caulking will make your rug non-slip.

COCKTAIL RECIPE DIRTY

SHIRLEY

CREDIT: realhousemoms.com

INGREDIENTS: • 2 oz. cherry vodka • 4 oz. 7-Up soda or Sprite • 1 tsp grenadine • Lime wedge • Maraschino cherries INSTRUCTIONS: 1.

Fill a glass with ice.

2.

Pour cherry vodka over ice and top with 7-Up or Sprite.

3.

Slowly pour the grenadine into the drink along the side so that it can sink to the bottom.

4.

Garnish with a lime wedge and maraschino cherry or two and enjoy!

Saving Fridge & Freezer Space To save space on storage, attach magnets to the bottoms of plastic containers so they’ll easily attach to the inside walls of your fridge or freezer.

Hide-a-Key If you don’t have a good place for a spare key and don’t want people looking under the mat at the front door, attach a pinecone to the end of a medicine bottle with your spare key in it and bury it in the ground.

Decorative Dry Erase List Don’t want the typical ugly white dry erase board throwing off your home décor? Simply put your favorite fabric or piece of decorative paper in a picture frame and use the dry erase markers on the glass. It wipes right off like a dry erase board.

Organized Plastic Bags Have an old tissue box? You can attach it to the inside of a kitchen cabinet or place it on a shelf and fill it with plastic bags to keep them contained and in one spot. so6ix.com | FEBRUARY 2016
