Happy February! The first month of 2017 has come and gone. How’d it go for you? Did you try anything new or stick to a goal? I feel like I did, but I also know it flew by – so if you’re feeling the same way, you’re not alone! Here we are in February and it’s the month of LOVE. Some of you are giddy and excited, and I’m sure some of you are rolling your eyes. Valentine’s Day falls in the middle of the month, and you don’t even want to know how much chocolate is consumed on that day. Just do your thing! Besides everything lovey-dovey, this is a perfect time of year to focus on your living space. It’s too cold to go outside and do anything most of the time, and there is somewhat of a lull in events until spring starts. Take this time to get that DIY project done you’ve been eyeing forever, or freshen up a room with a new coat of paint and some patterned pillows. Lucky for you, we cover all of this and much more in this February Home Issue. If you decide to take on a new project this month, don’t forget to shop and buy local where and when you can. We’ve made the shopping easier for you with our Home Design Guide, which is full of local retailers. You can browse through rugs and pillows, beds and kitchen tables. There’s a little something for every taste and
L E T T E R F R O M T H E S TA F F
every room! Don’t be afraid to tackle that new project – you just might learn a little along the way. Speaking of learning, I think we could all learn to love a little more. Reach out to someone who might not have the same views that you do. Show love to the person eating alone in the restaurant, the one who could use a smile from a stranger, or the one standing behind you in the checkout line with fewer items than you. Love doesn’t always have to be shown in extravagant matters, but a compilation of small matters that can often mean more. You might discover something new, too – both about the other person and about yourself. Hugs,
Lauren Wright

Wire Basket Side Table CREDIT: THESHABBYCREEKCOTTAGE.COM
Materials:
• • • • • •
Wire basket or trash can Spray paint (if desired) 18” round wood panel Wood stain Cable staples Wood hammer
Instructions: 1.
Outdoors, spray your basket or can in the desired color. Set aside and let dry.
2.
Coat your wood panel with a stain in your desired color. Let the wood panel dry for at least a few hours. If the wood piece is already stained or painted, skip this step.
3.
Turn your wood panel over and place the bottom of the basket to the bottom of the panel. Using the cable staples and a wood hammer, firmly lock the basket into place against the wood panel.
4.
Once secure, flip it over. Your indoor or outdoor side table is complete!

1 board (12 x 8 x 1” used here)
Instructions: 1.
Using painter’s tape, mark off the pattern and areas you want to paint on the serving board. Paint with desired colors and set aside to dry.
2.
Cut your dowel rods into the width of your board (here, 8 inches). Paint desired color, perhaps matching the color of the handles. Set aside to dry.
3.
Using a ruler, determine the location of your handles. Make a pencil mark through the screw holes. Drill holes where the screws will go.
4.
Flip the board over and add a thin straight line of super glue across the bottom for your dowel rod pieces. Stick on and let sit.
5.
Flip the board back over and re-drill the inner holes (now they have dowels underneath them), going about halfway through the dowels.
6.
Attach your handles with the screws. Voilà! You’re done.

White and colored feathers Gold spray paint Suede lace Scissors Wood dowel
Instructions: 1.
Spray the tips of the white feathers with spray paint and let them dry. You can use any color.
2.
Double-knot each end of a piece of the suede lace to each end of the wood dowel for hanging.
3.
Using pieces of suede lace of varying length, knot one end to the dowel and the other end to a gold feather. The one in the middle should be the longest and the pieces should get shorter in length on each side, in a loose V pattern. Repeat this step until your dowel is filled with suede lace strips and feathers.
4.
With the second set of feathers, repeat the process in step 3. This time, the suede lace should be all different lengths and placed in between the gold feathers.
5.

Materials:

Assorted driftwood pieces (3-7” long)
Instructions: 1.
For the base of the plywood, which your mirror will adhere to, you’ll want 2 1/2” of the plywood to show beyond the mirror. The finished size of the plywood should be 19”. Mark out a circle in the plywood.
2.
Using a jigsaw, cut along the marked line to make a complete circle. Once completed, gently sand down the edges for a smooth finish.
3.
On the back of the plywood, install the picture-framing kit so you’ll have a way to hang it up on a wall.
4.
Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to the back of the mirror and place the mirror in the center of the plywood. Allow it to completely dry.
5.
Using a hot glue gun, apply the longer driftwood pieces to the exposed plywood base and continue to work around the circle. Layer in the shorter driftwood pieces on top and in between to hide the exposed plywood.
6.
You’re done! Find the perfect spot to hang your mirror.

2.
Using a nail, fastener or picket, attach the leather strap, holding the jar to the wood piece. Make sure it’s securely fastened.
3.
Cut a piece of felt and attach it to the back of the wood piece using hot glue or any other type of sealer. This will protect your wall.
4.
Fasten a hook to the back of the wood piece to go on the wall.

Instructions: 1. 2.
Trace the outside rim of your bowls onto the board. You can use a measuring tape to make sure they are even.
3. 4.
Insert the hairpin legs according to the instructions, with one on each corner.
5.
Set your bowls in. Your station is ready to be used!
Use a jigsaw to cut out the circles just inside the line. This will allow the lip of the food and water bowls to rest on top of the tray. Use sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges and the top of the board. Paint the board your desired color(s) and let dry completely. Once dry, put a protective finish on the painted wood to seal everything from water or food stains.

Section of wood
Instructions: 1.
Using the saw, cut a flat side in your wood. This will be the side that rests against the wall. Sand your wood to make sure it has a flat surface.
2.
Drill three holes (the width of your rope) into the wood. One should be centered in the back and the other two equal distances from the first toward the front of the wood.
3. 4.
Coat the wood in a few coats of polyurethane, letting it dry completely.
5.
Lace your rope through the holes and tie a knot. Measure how far out your ropes will have to be from the wall for the back of the table to rest against the wall. Mark that spot and drill a hole to fit your toggle lock.
6.
Insert the toggle lock. Screw in the eye screw and then hook the S-hook through it.
7.
Make sure the table is level by adjusting the rope. Make sure each knot is secured tight. Trim excess rope.

There are so many great design trends happening right now, and we’ve picked six of the most popular for you here. Whether you’re looking to transform an entire house or a single room, change a wall color or pick a new accent pillow, these design trends can help guide you. These days, when it comes to home design, almost anything goes. If it fits what you’re wanting, who you are and what’s comfortable to you – that’s all that matters. Room design is like a blank canvas, and it’s all yours. Local stores here in Oklahoma City can help bring many of these ideas to life. Remember to buy local when and where you can!
Chip and Joanna Gaines of the hit HGTV show “Fixer Upper” have really brought this trend full circle. No, we’re not saying they started this style, but they definitely popularized it. This trend utilizes many of the eclectic pieces you’d find in a traditional farmhouse. Throw in some modern touches like a mid-century modern couch, a tufted headboard or a marble countertop in a shiplap kitchen and you’re on your way to having your own modern farmhouse. The colors used in the modern farmhouse are calming and clean.

Mix in steel or other metals where you can. In a space predominantly ruled by whites, creams and wood, a little metal in a light, barstool or basket can do the trick.

Laid-back, eclectic, full of texture, color and comfort. If this describes you or your space, you’re definitely into the bohemian style. What’s funny about boho is that there is really no exact set of rules or lines to stay inside. The space is completely organic to your taste and includes a little of everything. Although, to be truly boho, you do need to include a green potted plant, or ten.

Grey is IT. It’s the new neutral, it’s the bee’s knees and it can be used virtually anywhere in the home. The modern simplicity and minimalism of the Scandinavian monochromatic style is growing in popularity. It’s easy to fall in love with this style because it’s so fun to play with, in patterns, furniture or artwork.

Think cabin in the woods. A rustic design makes us want to cuddle up by the fire on the side of a snow-covered mountain. You can bring that feeling into your home with this style. The woods, textures and leathers convey a darker feel, but we’re all for the warmth it brings.

Calm, cool and collected. Coastal vibes are the best, aren’t they? When you’re by the sea, you’ve got no worries in the world and all is calm. With various shades of light and airy white and blue creating your own indoor day at the beach, we have a feeling you’ll never want to leave the house. Furniture in a coastal home really has no set structure or ideal, and that’s what makes this design fun.

Home is where you make it, and many people are transforming older buildings, typically in downtown settings, into lofts and homes. These homes may already have a bit of an industrial feel from exposed brick and pipes or concrete floors, so why not continue the build that way? Industrial style doesn’t have to be limited to an old warehouse – this bold and textured design trend can be applied to any space.

Mardi Gras
• •
Mardi Gras falls on February 28 this year.
• •
In other parts of the world it’s also known as “Pancake Day.”
•
New Orleans has been celebrating Fat Tuesday with parades for the last 180 years, since 1837.
•
The largest of about a dozen Mardi Gras supply houses in New Orleans sells an estimated one billion pairs of beads for the season.
•
More than 500,000 king cakes are sold each year in New Orleans between January 6 and Fat Tuesday, another 50,000 are shipped out of state.
Mardi Gras means “Fat Tuesday” in French. With Ash Wednesday marking the beginning of Lent, Mardi Gras is the “last hurrah” of sorts.
The colors are purple (signifying justice), gold (power) and green (faith).

PUPPY OF THE MONTH Aussiedoodle
This cutie is not a purebred, but rather a mix between an Australian shepherd and a poodle, also going by the name of Aussiepoo. Both of these breeds are smart pups, so it’s no surprise the Aussiedoodle is extremely smart, adaptable and great to train. Another bonus: they’re hypoallergenic. Since poodles don’t shed, there is very little to no shedding with the Aussiedoodle, so they don’t affect human allergies as much as other dogs. They do have a moderate to high activity level, so you’ll need to give them a good walk or active playtime each day. This fluffy pup is sure to be a great companion through the years. 52

EATS You don’t have to travel too far to get a taste of true Korean comfort food. Chae, a modern Korean eatery, is in the ever-growing 23rd Street District in Oklahoma City. The building is quaint and its atmosphere is cozy. Its modern vibe is in everything: the concrete tables, the clean lines, the music playing in the background (we heard rap on our visit, but it changes), and the food itself. The menu is small but bold. There is a little bit of everything, all falling within authentic Korean comfort food guidelines. Owner Daniel Chae, when coming up with the concept, thought on this question: Whether it’s a terrible day or a great one, what kind of food makes him feel good, and happy? What would he want to eat no matter what? And from there, the Chae menu was formed. Chae offers a mixture of small plates to be snacked on or shared, main dishes, family-style dishes and steamed buns. In Asia, steamed buns are widely available and come in many different forms, for breakfast, a snack, dinner or dessert. The steamed bun has been quickly catching on in America for an obvious reason: they’re so delicious. The most common ones are stuffed with some form of Korean pork belly, but at Chae you can get four different versions, with the occasional new weekly special. When you think steamed bun, think marshmallow without the sweet. It’s the lightest, fluffiest bread filled with lots of good stuff. You really can’t go wrong here – we promise. One of the best things about Korean food is the insane amount of flavor coming at you from every direction. There are so many great sauces, marinades and spices incorporated into each dish, and a richness in flavor you can’t find just anywhere. At Chae, you know each dish is handmade with a lot of love. Between Chae’s amazing food and its contemporary vibe, we can see why it’s a local favorite. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone a little: that’s where you’re going to find the most delicious food. We guarantee you will quickly become one of the regulars.
