Hello! We are very excited to bring you a new Home and Living Issue this month. A few years ago, we sat down and discussed future ideas and directions for the magazine. We wanted to find ways to make a better monthly magazine by achieving a great blend of what our readership wants and what our advertising partners deserve. One of the major areas of growth we talked about was the home industry. Our city is packed full of amazing local home businesses that are ready to help you with your dream home, and they know Okies like to keep up with the trends. So we want to connect you with the best local businesses to work with on your next home project. Whether you’re building a new home, doing a big remodel or just making some small renovations, we are happy to feature some of our great local vendors to help you with all areas of your next project. Make sure to check out our beautiful Home Trends editorial this month. We took the advice of local experts to give you a guide on current design and décor trends in multiple areas of the home. From trending paint colors to kitchen backsplashes, flooring and more, you’ll find it in the Home Trends spread.

EXQUISITE EYEWEAR SINCE 1971

Also in this issue is one of my favorite editorial features of the year: Made in Oklahoma. Every year we reach out to dozens of Made in Oklahoma companies to show off their products to you. They send us handselected products from all over the state to taste, try and showcase in our May issue. It is such a fun and exciting process, and it’s a little surprising that such a phenomenal variety of creative and quality products are made right here in good ole Oklahoma. We always encourage you to purchase local when and where you can! Make sure to keep an eye on our Instagram (@ so6ixmag), as we will be giving out several great Okie Made products. Hope you enjoy this issue. Our team put in lots of hard work to make it, and we thank you for your continued support! Thanks,

Be sure to come thirsty. Oklahoma wineries showcase an extensive variety of whites, reds and special blends all made in our great state. Breweries will offer a selection of ales, lagers and specialty varieties as well, all for sampling. And trust us when we say you’re definitely going to want to. Commemorative festival glassware and 10 tasting tokens can be purchased on-site for $22 so you can enjoy some of each! It’s a great opportunity to taste and try these purveyors whether you’re familiar with them or not. We love this event for so many reasons. Number one, the people. You get the opportunity to meet several of the vendors and owners firsthand and personally learn about each product. You can’t get that quality many other places. And two, the goods. You can taste and try and learn about so many different products: food, drinks, soaps, shirts and more. You’ll probably walk away feeling a real sense of pride to be supporting local. We know we do. We believe it’s so important to support local, and what better way to do so than with a “one-stop shop” at the Made in Oklahoma Fest. There are plenty of activities and things to see and try for every age, so plan to bring the whole family out and enjoy the day. It’s a quick drive, just minutes from downtown OKC. This “state of great tastes” provides an unparalleled showcase of local flavor and culture. More information on the entertainment lineup and vendor directory is available online at MadeinOklahomaFest.com.

Design + Decor Whether you’re in the home-building process, thinking about redoing a room, or just want to be “in the know” – we’re here to help you keep up with the current home trends. Thanks to many of our local homestore friends around town, we’ve provided a breakdown of the latest paint colors, floors, kitchen designs, furniture and more. It’s not always easy to keep up with what’s fashionable, as it changes over the years, so (with some design help) we’ve compiled a list of what’s trending in the here and now. Many, if not all, of these pieces and products can be found locally.

FLOORS Vintage + Texture NUVO HOME | NUVO-HOME.MYSHOPIFY.COM Vintage and texture are making their way back. The mod and midcentury look is here to stay, and the vintage vibe fits right in. Pendleton is a classic brand that goes way back to 1863. A vibrant, textured rug is a great way to introduce new colors into your home scheme without overwhelming the space.

Magnolia Rug NUVO HOME | NUVO-HOME.MYSHOPIFY.COM If it has the word “Magnolia” on it, you can pretty much assume it’s trending thanks to Fixer Upper. This rug from Magnolia Home adds a touch of subtle color to a space that is filled with whites, neutrals and light woods.

Wood Look Tile TWO STRUCTURES HOMES | TWOSTRUCTURESHOMES.COM Wood look tile is in. Although not necessarily “new,” it is continuing to build momentum and is often chosen by home builders. It’s extremely durable, easy to clean and gives you a look that is hard to beat.

Commercial Range CULINARY KITCHEN | CULINARYKITCHEN.COM Many people desire a commercial-style range in their kitchens, not only for the function but for the look. In addition to the typical stainless steel, many are branching out to gold, with matching hoods. Speaking of gold, we can guarantee you’ll find this color somewhere in the kitchen, whether it’s on the faucet, the hardware or the ovens themselves.

KITCHEN Backsplash TWO STRUCTURES HOMES | TWOSTRUCTURESHOMES.COM A white and marble backsplash makes for a light look behind either white or darker cabinets. It creates a clean and modern, chic space.

Dark Cabinetry CULINARY KITCHEN | CULINARYKITCHEN.COM While we still see the “all white” kitchen trend sticking around, some are branching out to darker painted cabinets to make a statement. Darker colors give a rich look to a chic kitchen space.

Sink TWO STRUCTURES HOMES | TWOSTRUCTURESHOMES.COM The farmhouse sink style is here to stay. Not only is it more functional, giving you more space, but it’s customizable by color. The white or cream basin has been widely popular, and stainless steel with a bowed apron gives a more modern look.

X-Base Tables NUVO HOME | NUVO-HOME.MYSHOPIFY.COM Modern X-base tables can fit into farmhouse, mid-century modern, or classic styles. Dark wood dining tables are coming back, and a lot of people love the X-base not just for the clean contemporary look, but because it actually gives you more sitting space. JUDE DINING TABLE

FURNITURE Geometric EDMOND FURNITURE GALLERY | EDMONDFURNITURE.NET What makes this a trendy staple piece? It’s a tie between the white & gold coloring and the geometric pattern. An extra bonus: this piece is one of two. The trend is to have two smaller pieces instead of one large coffee table.

Floral + Embroidery EDMOND FURNITURE GALLERY | EDMONDFURNITURE.NET Florals are making a comeback. For a long while, people were only using them in small areas like rugs, small art pieces and throw pieces. They’re now being included in large furniture pieces, and they’re making a statement all on their own.

Texture EDMOND FURNITURE GALLERY | EDMONDFURNITURE.NET Texture is in all across the board, from furniture to décor pieces to flooring. A good texture is a bonus for any item, like this extra soft chair made of fleece or this hearty rustic wood coffee table.

ACCENT PIECES Blush NUVO HOME | NUVO-HOME.MYSHOPIFY.COM Blush is on trend right now, and we’re guilty of giving in to it. It’s just so good. Using smaller pieces, like the blush and gold trays, is an inexpensive way to introduce the color into your home, if you’re not so bold as to go with an all-blush couch.

Lucite + Gold CULINARY KITCHEN | CULINARYKITCHEN.COM Lucite is in and it’s everywhere. Accent with gold and you have the perfect combo. Lucite is making a name for itself not just in hardware, but in small décor pieces, art and even furniture.

Desert + Succulents

No matter what type of climate your home sits in, desert vibes are everywhere. From patterns of cacti or actual cacti on the table – you can get a taste of the desert no matter where you live. It’s playful, fun and a great way to bring greens into your home.

Texture + Patterns NUVO HOME | NUVO-HOME.MYSHOPIFY.COM Simplicity is not always the winner in design, as texture and pattern pieces demonstrate.

She has a precious personality and gives the best puppy kisses. She is very smart and is already mastering her potty training at such a young age! But she hasn’t given up her love for chewing on anything and everything just yet. Her favorite: shoelaces. Blair loves to be outside, running around and eating leaves (we see a theme here, Miss Chewy). She’s a pro snuggler and you can almost always find her sleeping on her back. Her owners love her so very much, and she makes the perfect addition to their family. Give Pearl a wave if you see her out and about! Want your puppy to be entered for our local puppy of the month? EATS Fair warning: what you see ahead is probably going to make your mouth start watering. Say hello to one of the Plaza District’s newest eateries, The Press! The Press is a sister restaurant to local favorites The Mule and Anchor Down. They’re serving up lunch, brunch and dinner in a building that was previously a garage and a printing press, hence the name. Upon walking in, the first thing you’ll notice after the smiling faces that greet you (seriously, everyone is so nice) is the décor. It’s a combination of sleek and new with a classic homey feel; it’s comfortable. Our friends at The Press are whipping up delicious eats that combine comfort food with a mix of the Deep South and Southwest and circle all the way back around to our Oklahoma roots. Most items on the menu seem familiar, yet they’re unique in their own way. They top mac & cheese with buffalo chicken and ranch drizzle, they encrust fried chicken in cornflakes, and you don’t have to wait for the State Fair to roll around anymore – you can order an Indian Taco off their dinner menu. Even with the creative menu, there is something for everyone to choose from. The Press offers up delicious vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options for those with dietary requirements. We got to taste a quality mix of hearty and light, and each was equally delicious. Can we just talk about their gravy for a minute? You’ll see it on a lot of the items on the menu, from the chicken fried ribeye (yes, you read that right and yes, it’s just as good as it sounds) to smothered tots and more, and we deem it liquid gold. It’s thick and creamy, and honestly we’d probably drink it with a straw if that was acceptable behavior. Each item we tried had impeccable flavor – you could taste the effort and love in each dish – and it not only left us full, but really, really happy. One more warning: after you eat here, you’re probably going to need a nap – but we’re totally okay with that because 1.) naps, and 2.) your belly is going to be oh-so-happy. This place is guaranteed to make you smile.

Johnnie’s got started 47 years ago and Oklahoma City has been loving their charbroiled burgers ever since. You won’t find frozen or stale ingredients here. That includes the French fries and onion rings, which are made daily. Each burger is served with hand-grated cheese and fresh lettuce and tomatoes. Definitely don’t turn down their original Johnnie’s Sauce (it’s so good). Can’t find a burger with exactly what you’re wanting? They have plenty of mouthwatering add-ons like Caesar, chili or jalapeños. Gluten-free friends, they offer a gluten-free bun for all of their burgers and sandwiches – bonus! Although the burgers and onion rings (in our opinion) are the star of the show, you can’t overlook their classics, like the turkey cranberry sandwich, which can give any burger a run for its money.

Hacienda Tacos is doing Tex-Mex differently! This taco eatery serves a combination of foods from southeastern New Mexico and the lost classic recipes of the traditional Tex-Mex we’re used to. The menu comprises a never-ending medley of flavors and is definitely inclusive. It features both green and red Hatch chiles, one of the main staples of New Mexican cuisine. Whatever you do, order the DIY Guacamole. It’s served in a mortar with all of the necessary ingredients and you get to mash it yourself! Any of the street tacos are amazing, but we personally can’t get enough of the Al Pastor. All four of their table sauces are made in-house and full of great flavor. There are plenty of creative creations to try; make your way around the menu with each visit!

GIVING FOR GOOD

SPECIAL OLYMPICS OKLAHOMA Welcome to our new monthly section, in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

More than 11,600 Special Olympics Oklahoma athletes participate in more than 140 competitions each year.

Special Olympics has given out more than 110,000 pairs of prescription eyeglasses to athletes who need them.

The organization is supported by over 1,700 volunteer coaches and thousands of sponsors, donors and volunteers.

There are Special Olympics programs in all 50 states and more than 4.4 million athletes in more than 170 countries worldwide.

They offer 16 sport options, such as soccer, softball, horseshoes, powerlifting, equestrian, golf and more.

Special Olympics Oklahoma has been enriching the lives of many Oklahomans since 1969. The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for both children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They help them participate in sharing their gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other athletes and the community, enriching not only their athletic lives but also their daily lives at home, in the classroom and on the job. Besides competitions, SOO also has programs like Healthy Athletes, Healthy Hearing, Opening Eyes, and Special Smiles. These programs offer free services like vision care, mouth guards, hearing scanning and more to ensure each individual is taken care of all around. Special Olympics Oklahoma is helping to change and enrich the lives of so many wonderful individuals in our great state.
