RAYDEN LAWRENCE @RAYDEN_LAWRENCE
A Field Guide to Dreams is a hand-painted, stab bound artist book illustrating different types of dreams and their characteristics. This field guide uses primarily whimsical imagery with some added text to convey the feeling of having a certain type of dream. I used unusual colours and jarring linework to convey the feeling of dreaming and a sense of disjointed and detached imagery. This work aims to explain something that cannot be explained, as many of us try at length to understand our dreams to no avail. This book is not designed to be educational; it is an imaginative and comedic tool to comfort the viewer and reassure them that all of us have unusual, confusing, and sometimes frightening dreams.
“A Field Guide to Dreams” 2021 Stab Bound Artist Book, Acrylic and Ink on Paper 8.5” x 5.5”. Rayden Lawrence is an lgbt+, 21 year old emerging artist. Rayden is from Canso, Nova Scotia and he graduated with a BFA in Visual Arts from Memorial University in May 2021. Rayden periodically addresses lgbt+ identity and racism in his work, inspired by challenges he has faced in his interracial same-sex relationship. Rayden’s artwork has been exhibited in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New York City, Baltimore, and London, UK. His work has been published by zines and art magazines in Tennessee, Amsterdam, Illinois, India, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom. Rayden has experience teaching visual art to youth, and volunteer experience curating an online exhibition for the Little House Gallery. Rayden has been recognized as a promising student, as he has received five scholarships and The University Medal for Academic Excellence in Visual Arts from Memorial University. Rayden has also received over 20,000$ in merit-based grants.
how was your trip? thomas hannah / @BROKESELLOUT We asked for the stars In your darkened basement And with my saddened eyes Lightened in your giant caresses We watched sharpened blue figures Slain on your technicolour television Two juvenile delinquents innocent Curled in foetal positions I felt sick And saw a cockroach crawl down your sink Mind on fire Unrecognisable But love yet to be tarnished The sky scared me with her infinity And the weight of an obsidian earth upon me Stopping slowly her slippery hands shifting Leaving us naked Frozen In limbo embracing I held onto your bedframe Whilst white walls were bleeding You laughed and couldn’t believe what I was saying The roof above us swallowing everything A vacuum of nothing And my insignificance wouldn’t be remembered Not a grain of salt in the pacific My soul was sailing a minefield of icebergs A doomed titan sick of fighting thinking What if the universe is endless And death only blackness What if the carpet keeps writhing Whispering sickly words of anxiety What if you weren’t steering My sinking ship to New York City Where We would end up drowning eventually But not that evening That evening Only you I wished with me *** "‘How Was Your Trip’ is a personal account of my first acid trip, where I became enamoured & terrified at the endlessness of existence & universe. ‘Altamont Speedway; The Plucking of the Flower Children.’ Is a poem derived mostly from a segment of Keith Richard’s autobiography ‘Life’ (2010), & the 1970 documentary ‘Gimmie Shelter’ about the tragedy of the Rolling Stones 1969 free concert at the Altamont Speedway. Many say the ensuing violence & death of Meredith Hunter, was the beginning of the end for the counterculture of the sixties.

you can’t take your eyes off me Monique Lee-Vassell @monzzzyy ever wonder why? maybe it’s because i’m lost in a trance and staring has only pulled you in closer now we’re deep the music is louder the night is darker you feel everything a little more welcome to my world here is where i stay does this explain my composure my coolness day to day come now the party is lively it’s time to slip away to the place i like to call my home the magnificent milky way people tell me i’m fantastic others say i’m magic the rest see me in disarray the one thing they all have in common they’ve fallen under my spell almost straightaway you can never take your eyes off me i see you every time even though i’m never watching your eyes would meet with mine
you’re not alone in fact i have a luring charm you just might be the first i’ve taken under on my arm how’d you like the tour of my abode the outer world? i’m here most days most nights i’m tucked away dancing being watched by you try to take your eyes off me see if i come in doses best of luck fortunate mortal you’re a lasting victim of my hypnosis my gift to you is this treasure it forever a change in the mind’s perspective a world-bending truth a home in this cave of wonders everlasting youth.
About the author: I, Monique Lee-Vassell, consider myself a cosmic being placed on earth with a purpose. It’s been a long and winding road figuring out what exactly that purpose is, channeling it through many vessels. I have come to understand that not only am I a maker and giver of art, I am art. We all are. I love writing poetry and painting pictures because the result is my soul manifested in tangible things. Creation is what binds us, defines us. I am twenty years old, currently based in Kingston, Ontario. I just launched my online store, The Museum of Monique, where my inner workings and artifacts are sold. It would be my utmost pleasure to have a cup of tea with Paulo Coelho, probably at his home in Brazil. My favourite childhood story is anything by Robert Munsch, The Paper Bag Princess the most iconic of all. Finally, my favourite poem at the moment is Christopher Lauge’s Come to the Edge. Short but everlastingly sweet. About this piece: Initially I had written this poem with myself as the speaker, a vampy self-portrait from my mind’s eye. However, I realized it can also be read from the perspective of a drug. Weed, LSD, paranoia… anything we let take control of our minds, thus consuming us, transforming us. We have all fallen under these spells, some are still in a trance. Picture a dark room, your kryptonite walks into the party, suddenly everything lights up, and you’re alive once more.

This piece came to me during a trip up at a friend's trailer. We consumed psilocybin hot chocolate, danced around to electronic music in her trailer and also under the stars. A song came on which had a ton of build and transitions called Opus (Four Tet Remix) by Eric Prydz… I felt an intense amount of energy coming from my third eye so I closed my eyes, laid on a bed and connected. My friend actually came over to me and placed her hand over my third eye because she felt all the energy coming through and wasn’t sure how to react haha! I had to tell her that I was channeling and needed a moment to experience this. When I closed my eyes I was greeted by my third eye, a ton of beautiful energy and visuals swirling around my astral self. I stayed here for a moment, taking it all in. Feeling a shift coming on… I decided I needed to accept who I was at this moment. I walked forward to step through my eye and into my ego. During this phase of my life, I was in the process of uprooting and going on a spiritually charged journey, but my ego was taking in a lot of others judgments towards this decision. I saw my father confused and upset with me, my friends wondering why I was leaving and how I was able to do this, plus all of the insecurities I was having on letting go of my “life” I had worked hard to build for myself. I started spiraling into the dark and was allowing these judgements to overcome... Until I realized I didn’t have to fall into this pain. Instead of sitting and feeling sad, I PUNCHED THE SADNESS WITH ALL THE LOVE AND EXCITEMENT I HAD TO CHANGE AND TRANSFORM! I allowed myself to experience rebirth! By letting go and moving forward to shift into a higher vibration. A previous conversation with an intellectual friend regarding morals and ethics, made me understand that our decisions are all subjective to our own personal experience and revolves around what we are going through at any given moment. It widened me further into attaching to the 5D consciousness. When I opened my eyes, I was grateful for the message and thanked the universe for the lesson… Then I continued to dance.

HAMSA BREAKTHROUGH
Originally when creating this piece I was attempting to trace the lines on my palm to read it and imitate the signs that come with palmistry. I ended up tracing my hand and eventually this piece came with ease. It took me only a few hours altogether to draw but colouring it in and adding all the detail ended up taking over a month. I had recently tried DMT which opened my eyes to shifting into the all encompassing Universe. I feel this piece came from that experience even though I never saw a Hamsa in any way. More so coming from the amount of energy and emotions that came with the trip. When I was colouring this in I almost had no concept of “enough detail” and I actually only stopped placing more detail because I was worried the Hamsa would become lost… The energy placed into this piece and coming off of it was induced by the infinite amount of life, fractals and prana that keeps going and going and going within and all around us all the time.

In May of 2020 I had decided to reconnect with myself and in turn, connect with a group of amazing witches. I was no longer able to physically go to dance events but luckily Bass Witch Coven were able to hold virtual dance parties. I purchased a ticket for the event: Hearth Witch and couldn’t wait to take a small dose of mushrooms and free myself by dancing in my living room under the New Moon in Gemini. I had a friend come over and told him my plan, offered him a dose if he wanted but by all means said no obligation. He joined me but ended up needing to spend time alone to process some demons he had been attempting to ignore. I spent the evening getting a sweat on and grooving with all the vibes that came through to me. I danced for a solid four or five hours and eventually plopped down on my couch with a sigh of relief as I had reset exactly how I had intended. In that moment, I felt energy coming across me and I knew I was receiving a message from Source. I crossed my legs and held both my arms up in acceptance of receiving this download. What came to me was this understanding that I was going to be travelling soon. Taking a big leap of faith and leaving my apartment and going on a spiritually charged adventure. I saw myself living on a mountain and growing in such an immense manner that I created this piece purely from the energy I felt in this moment. A few days later, a friend of mine reached out and asked me about moving from Ontario to Newfoundland and then to Costa Rica… I decided to take the leap. Coincidentally after moving to Newfoundland, I got an opportunity to move to British Columbia… I took the offer. From there my journey has continued. Funny enough, here I am, a bit over a year later, living on a mountain and growing in ways I couldn’t have imagined.

that day we discovered new colours. the prettiest purple, the brightest red, the deepest blue you’ve ever seen. all of them, except the ugly ones. flecks of light, dancing in the grass, dripping wet from the lake and shining from the sun. inventing sounds, creating time, becoming music. tumbling down a flat hill, and touching without hands. all-knowing eye contact and silences filled with sounds. crickets chirping, sticks breaking, waves cresting in paintings. boats set out on a journey to nowhere, no destination in sight, arriving far behind schedule. knee deep in the water but still standing on land, grounded in the earth entirely. fully, wholly, completely, we.

i still go back to that place a look into the lesser known hallucinogen "salvia"
I STILL GO BACK TO THAT PLACE adriana green / @hadriamecca
My experience with psychedelics is one riddled with imposter syndrome. My first time was with Salvia, purchased from a convenience store with a friend. I was 18. And, at 18, I didn’t have many life experiences to hold its weight to gold. But I had impulse, and enough cash on me to buy drugs some for a good night, and in my naivety I just thought it was akin to a marijuana high. It was not. And what followed the initial ingestion was a wild ride that has still not left my mind. I go back in times of fleeting apathy, to remember a state where I was completely, and utterly free… if only for a moment. I became a bird, what felt like an eagle, flying… soaring high above the Serengeti. A sudden sense of urgency was felt beneath me. There was a terrifying rumble, and what appeared below was a furious swarm of wild animals, galloping towards… something. I could only see them running, I never looked to see what they were running towards or running from. But they were wild. A characteristic I wished myself to have.
And what sprung from the heartbreaking longing to break free from some sort of shell I had made for myself, came a voice. “You are very boring.” What? “You need to lighten up” Whose speaking? “This path is doing you no good! Think for yourself. Say what you mean. Mean what you say. Break free.” What is that? And the animals turned to black. And I found myself awake on my bed, feeling sore and bruised, like I was waking up from surgery. But instead I did some of my own digging. A surgical-precise incision into my psyche. I’m sure you thought I would have listened to whatever was speaking to me that day, but lessons found are usually more apt to stick when they have relevant context surrounding it. Coping mechanisms… education not yet sought after… but in time… in time the puzzle comes together. And I’m still waiting for that day

ARIES
TAURUS
Five of Cups What’s holding you down Aries? You may be feeling rather intense emotions lately, or have recently been let down or disappointed. Allow yourself to reflect upon how you cope and navigate through feelings of sadness and grief. Do you witness and hold space for your emotions? Or do you possibly ignore and neglect them? This may be a time for self-reflection, compassion and forgiveness. Whatever has happened, whatever you feel fear, regret, failure and disappointment about – ask yourself how can begin to start forgiving yourself, then focus on forgiving others. You cannot control everything that happens, so stop trying to. And don’t let this make you lose hope or turn into a pessimist, as there are still things you can control, so turn your focus there. The Star You may have really been questioning your beliefs and values lately. Questioning your current beliefs, values and behaviours – do they truly serve your higher self and/or are they helping you to build the being you wish to become? There is a need to be more hopeful – hopeful toward the future, your gifts, and your abilities. There may be a need to tend to your spiritual needs, a need to go within. Possibly a need to get to know yourself on a deeper level – do you feel connected to self? – Do you feel the wholeness and worthiness of your body, mind and soul? You may need to work on your self trust and respect, listening to your inner voice, and trusting your gut feeling more. Lately you may have been heavily influenced by externally forces and its time to connect back with yourself and remind what you truly want.
GEMINI
CANCER
The Fool Wanting to start something new Gemini? Sounds like you’re supported. If there is some kind of risk or new opportunity being presented to you – this may not be the time to proceed slowly but to jump at it. Although be cautious of “foolishly” rushing into things. Ask yourself if you are holding yourself back – potentially through not being motivated, negative/intrusive thoughts, doubts, fear or anxieties? If you feel there is a lack of opportunities surrounding you – ask yourself whether or not you are making any effort to seek out opportunities. As much as we’d all wish to pretend things will just fall into our laps – although sometimes this does happen! We cannot just wait around for things to happen, we must come to the understanding that we are the creators, we are the builders, the inventors. It’s time to stop waiting around for the perfect timing and start making things happen! 6 of Wands You’re feeling ready to take on the world. Well it is your season, just a few days after this issue launched on July 16th, the Sun moved out of Cancer and into Leo on July 22nd 2021! Either way you’re feeling yourself and you’re ready to take on any mission. You may be feeling a lot more confident lately and if not, may this be your motivation to find ways to work on loving and accepting your authentic self. The thing with a lack of confidence is usually that one fears the judgements of others. Well, its time you tell judgement to F off. For those feeling super confident lately, make sure you check in with your behaviours and attitudes to look out for being arrogant, narcissistic and egotistical. Amp up the love and acceptance and turn down the egotism and judgement.
LEO
VIRGO
King of Cups Time to focus on your emotional well being Leo! I know, you probably hate dealing with and confronting your emotions – specifically the negative ones. There is a need here to nurture your emotional well-being. Working on finding healthy ways to express and communicate how you’re feeling. If your emotions have been all over the place, maybe its because you need to explore new ways of navigating them. Its time to gain control and power over your emotional body – allow yourself to invite in emotional balance. How can you acknowledge your emotions from a place of compassion, love and forgiveness? Your emotions are valid and completely normal, so stopping being so hard on yourself when you have a moment of sadness, or frustration or anger. Instead accept that emotions are part of the human experience, and if ya can’t beat em, join em. Hold space for your emotions to be seen and heard, let go of the need to hide, ignore or pretend like they aren’t there. Knight of Pentacles Your hard work is paying off Virgo! Duh! Like you didn’t already know this. Your planning, organizing and strategizing skills really help you to create a strong foundation for yourself. You really know how to set yourself up for success at times. But have you been feeling not so successful lately? Have you been feeling stuck or bored? If it feels like your routine is getting old, allow yourself to make some changes and spice things up. Rather than being oh so serious all the time allow yourself to be spontaneous and adventurous. Try to be more open to new experiences, people and places. As much as you may love to stay home and in your comfort zone, think about all the opportunities that could lead you to the success you seek, just by being a little bit more open!
LIBRA
SCORPIO
10 of Pentacles Things are looking lovely for you Libra! There may be a new home involved, or some are starting to build a family. Allows yourself to take the time to celebrate all you have created, to show gratitude for all the blessings along the way, and for this beautiful journey we call life. For others, this may just be a time for you to reflect upon how you can begin planning for long-term success and happiness. If you feel like nothing is working out in your favour and have been feeling a major lack of something in your life? There may be a need to focus on questioning your need for stability, security and commitment. Starting with yourself, do you feel secure within yourself? Do you find it easy or hard to commit to things? Are you good at saving money? Okay well, as a Libra I know we can be a bit overindulgent and have a deep inner passion for shopping/Fashion. But its time to question whether all the things you’re spending your money on are actually benefiting you in the long run? It may be time to be more disciplined with your finances. Rather than spending your money on instant gratifications, ask yourself how you can invest in your happiness, future and success? 3 of Cups *Cue Celebration by Kool & The Gang* Its time to celebrate good times Scorpio. Whatever you’re going through, take a moment or a few to celebrate yourself and your journey. Whether you’ve made huge accomplishments or not. Its time to celebrate even the little things. Potentially a need to spend more time in the present moment – rather than worrying about the past or stressing about the future. Its also a great time to get yourself out there, socialize and network, there’s much potentiality for meeting likeminded individuals. Collaborating with friends will also be favoured, and your creative juices are likely flowing! If you find you’ve been lacking creativity, maybe taking a step back to have fun with your friends will spark some inspiration!
SAGITTARIUS
CAPRICORN
7 of Wands Have you been a little defensive lately? You’re feeling fiery and up for a challenge. Although be cautious of the battles you choose to fight. Not everyone that questions you wants to fight or argue with you, some may just simply be curious. You’re fueled up and ready to go, but you must not attack everything that comes into sight. There may be a need to ground, slow down and re-evaluate your objectives. There is no rush and you must not overwork and run yourself down. May this be your reminder to take time to rest and recharge. To have a period of relaxing between each new adventure. As well there is a need to focus more internally rather than externally – a need to protect your own energy and reflect upon what makes you feel safe and secure.
8 of Pentacles When aren’t you working hard? If there’s been something you’re trying to master, a skill you’re trying to strength or a goal you’re trying to achieve. Your hard work, dedication and consistency is putting you on the right track! When it feels like all your hard work hasn’t gone anywhere, remember its brick by brick that buildings are made. Each step you get closer, so don’t get discouraged. Reflect upon what you could develop and ask yourself what you feel passionate about or which direction you seek to go. Now, how can you show up fully for yourself and your mission? Commit to making changes, adjustments and improvements when you know that what you are currently doing is no longer satisfying. Don’t lose hope or give up now, its time to dedicate, focus and find some patience!

Strength Claim that personal power Aquarius! As Leo season is quickly approaching on July 22nd 2021, this may really be the perfect time for you to learn about claiming your inner power, strength, courage and confidence. Has self-doubt and low energy gotten the best of you? Motivated is an unfamiliar feeling, do you often feel depleted? If so, question what is causing this. Is there a lack of passion and excitement in the work you do? Its time to be extra kind to yourself, open up your heart a bit (and yes maybe, just maybe let someone in). There is a need to really show and express this raw, unfiltered version of self. As you will find much empowerment in embracing your true self. May you tap into that inner strength that allows you to find the courage to be exactly as you are, without a fear or a doubt.
4 of Pentacles Its time to stop disassociating yourself Pisces. I know how much you love to escape the reality of things but lets face it, there’s something YOU need to face when it comes to your finances, your possessions and your spending habits. You must learn to find a healthy balance between spending and saving. Finding discipline and letting go of guilt – not feeling guilty when you buy something but acknowledging you’re allowed to treat yourself but not full on over-indulge yourself. There is a need to gain more control over your finances and potentially your relationship with money. How do you feel about money? Positive or negative? Hopeful or doubtful? Scarce or abundant? Are you wise and disciplined with your money? Are you careless? Are you fearful of spending? Or Fearful that you don’t have enough? How can you work with money rather than against or for it?

Not only is edward a talented and experienced music producer, but his ability to hear, play around with, and create new unique sounds allows him to forge his own path in the music industry. His goal? To evoke a psychedelic experience in the listener without the use of hallucinogens', to ultimately shift the perception and stigma of EDM away from primal, aggressive energy by introducing higher frequencies and intention in his mixes to create a meditative trance for the listener. We also talk to @hadriamecca on working with edward on the {flamingoes} mix, and where she finds inspiration for her poetry.
