Jazzfest 2013 Design Proposal

This is a design proposal outlining the New look and feel for Jazzfest 2013. Inspired by the funky designs of 2012, I have designed a new logo, new ticket designs and new advertising materials.

The new logo contains a music note as one of the main elements paired with a font called “Filbert Brush. The reason I chose this font is because it has a funky presence and a handwritted element to it. The music note is turned into a free flowing underline which gives Jazzfest a royal look and feel. Also the TD logo is still prominent and is not getting lost in the logo. I chose the color green because it is similar to the TD logo, but not the same shade, the two greens are complimentary to each other. The goal was to create a funky, modern, fun logo that will be memorable.
Color / Fonts Futura Condensed Medium
The colors for promotional materials chosen are all vibrant and give off a feeling of excitement when used in a proper way. Light green can give a clean spring time feel, as well as feelings of wealth and comfort. The Font Family of Futura flows well with the design because its a geometric sans-serif typeface. Futura has an appearance of efficiency and forwardness. Very well suited for the Victoria International Jazzfest.

The Ticket Design follows the same structure as the poster and playbill, with repeating elements that help tie in the overall design. The season pass and Daily pass only differ within the color, however in a darker setting will still be easy enough to distinguish based on the darkness of the ribbon that displays the theatre name.

Jeni Fleming After more than two decades as a classical pianist, Jeni Fleming reinvented herself as a jazz vocalist. Fifteen years ago she began touring as a vocal/guitar duo and never looked back. Innumerable festivals – and a few awards – later, Fleming has earned an international reputation for her inspired music-making.

Phil Dwyer 2012 Juno winner for “Best Contemporary Jazz Album”, Qualicum Beachʼs born Phil Dwyer has long been recognized as one of Canadaʼs pre-eminent saxophone maestros (heʼs also a great pianist, composer, and arranger). Dwyer has taken home the “Best Arranger” and “Best Saxophonist” trophies at the National Jazz Awards on several occasions and has been involved in some way with seven projects that have won Juno awards.

The Hifi is a high-energy musical collective that knows all the best ways to have a great time on the dance floor. A mash-up of jazzy New Orleans funk, hot soul, rock and R&B, this group comprises some of Victoriaʼs most gifted musicians. Donʼt miss the bandstand magic of Nick La Riviere trombone/vocals, Ryan Tandy bass, Art Booker piano/vocals, and Damian Graham drums/vocals.

Sometimes referred to as a “violinist extremist,” Kytami (a.k.a. Kyla Uyede) is a classically trained prodigy who has long been considered one of Canadaʼs most diverse and electrifying violin virtuosos. This charismatic and energetic performer takes a similarly athletic approach to her music, bounding between classical and fiddle styles while matching them to heavy bass and electronic dance beats (with a bit of punk and metal thrown in for good measure). After a long stint with award winners Delhi 2 Dublin, Kytami began pursuing a solo career in 2010. She has captivated audiences from Hong Kong to Berlin to Dubai, and now she wants to mess with you! Kytami performs with DJ Phonograph.
This example playbill page clearly displays artist information, and an organized time-line for the next four days of concert. A clean and simple layout lets the audience focus more on the music and less time reading a complicated playbill.
