Launching the most pres gious photographic compe on this side of the Carillon Tower - and the other side too, for that ma er! In the early days of Soar Valley Life Magazine we chose photos for our front cover from those we had taken ourselves. We’d match the dominant colour of the photo and create a header in that same colour. This was fine un l about month eight when we were running out of suitable photos. By luck, we met up with a brilliant young lady called Rebecca Soanes. Her Dad had been a keen photographer and had le her all his photo equipment in his will. Her photos were full of life in all its glory. The only problem here was that Rebecca lived in Derbyshire, and we really wanted local scenes and subjects. Then came another chance mee ng with a truly gi ed, award winning, landscape photographer called Bill Allsopp. If you Google him you will be amazed at the breathtaking images in his por olio. Bill did us proud for about a year, providing us with some outstanding photographs in and around our beau ful countryside, having re red from his main job as an accountant to become a professional landscape photographer. He now has a range of images available for sale in galleries up and down the country ‐ some of them sell for hundreds of pounds. In June, one of his photos from a set he had done for Soar Valley Life in the summer of 2014 featured on the front cover and inside the Na onal BBC magazine ‘Countryfile’. We now feel the me is right to launch our very own photo compe on open to all amateur photographers living and/or working in our area. The types of photo we would like to see are many and varied ‐ seasonal, local, colourful, lively, interes ng and so on. To give you a clue, here are a few subjects we’ve chosen before: 15 photos of flora, 3 of swans, 2 of robins, 3 Christmas scenes, 2 snow scenes, 1 jolly fisherman, 1 bee, 1 bu erfly, 1 ladybird, 1 Vulcan bomber, 2 steam trains, 2 poppies, 1 church, 1 country show, 1 brewery, 1 Wanlip Whopper, 2 nursery schools, 2 sunsets, 3 iconic buildings, 5 landscapes, two fine art reproduc ons, and 1 awards night. (Uncle Tom Cobley was there, so we’re told!) If you’d like to know more about our photo compe on send an email to steve@soarvalleylife.co.uk. and we might see your photo on our front page soon!

Cyclamen hederifolium Some mes referred to as Ivy Leaved Cyclamen, it is par cularly useful at this me of year when colour in the garden can be in short supply. With their pre y, marbled, heart shaped leaves and upright fragrant flowers they look wonderful planted en mass in a woodland se ng, or around the

base of deciduous trees. Having been dormant for a while they spring back to life with the late summer rains. The flowers

emerge before the leaves and as the flowers fade the leaves begin to appear and form a pre y carpet. They can be hugely long lived and thrive in unpromising places with almost no care. It is best to buy them as young growing plants with small corms, at first you'll no ce a rash of small leaves but over the years they will increase in size cheering you up each autumn. Claire Jones

Houseplants Go Home Most houseplants need to be just that, plants in houses, but come the summer it usually gives them a real boost to get the higher natural light levels, refreshing (rela vely warm) rainfall and seriously fresh air. But now that September is here it is me to bring them indoors – colder nights will cause damage, especially to some of the more tender varie es. Before bringing them in, check your plants over. Use a sharp pair of scissors to remove dead, damaged or dying leaves, cu ng back neatly into clean, healthy growth. Next inspect the stems, foliage and any flowers for pests and diseases ‐ it always pays to bring houseplants in totally clean. Look out for white powdery mildew deposits, o en accompanied by a bit of leaf yellowing, and check for greyish fuzzy fungal patches caused by the notorious Botry s or grey mould. Also look for pests like scale insects ‐ ny brownish ellip cal insects which feed beneath leaves or on so stems, o en producing copious quan es of s cky, sugary honeydew ‐ or aphids, which may be found clustered on the more tender, newer growth. These must be dealt with before the plants go indoors, as once inside the pests will flourish in the warmer, more protected condi ons, and will soon mul ply and may even spread. Most problems like these, if

Page 12

caught early, can be dealt with by using scissors or secateurs to snip off infected areas, or by some careful picking off by hand. If you find scale insects, aphids or fluffy patches of mealy bug, there is a brilliant environmentally‐friendly biocontrol that is also safe for you and your pets. For more informa on, visit www.pippagreenwood.com/products/ protect‐your‐crops. Next, inspect the pots, including the surface of the compost and beneath the base and rim of the pot itself. If you can, and as long as the plant won’t be damaged in the process, gently ease it out of its pot and check the root ball ‐ this is the perfect place for stowaways like vine weevils, slugs and snails. Not the sort of house guests you or your plants would appreciate, I’m sure.

Once your old favourites are safely re‐installed in their old posi ons and are free from unwanted guests, you may like to treat yourself to a new houseplant or two. A Po ed Pub History A public house is a building licensed to serve alcoholic drinks. Its roots can be traced back to Roman taverns and Anglo-Saxon alehouses. The Roman invasion brought many enduring features to our island, one of which was tabernae, introduced to England in around 40 AD. Originally set up to serve wine to thirsty Roman troops, these tabernae or taverns soon began to sell English ale too. Subsequent invasion saw the Anglo‐Saxons adop ng the tradi on and ale (and later beer) houses became a feature of every village and town. Some alehouses and taverns started to offer hot meals and overnight accommoda on to the weary traveller. These became known as inns (the word ‘inn’ means ‘lodging house’). The term ‘public house’ came into use during the reign of King Henry VII and, in 1552, an Act was passed to ensure that innkeepers had a licence to run their premises. The word ‘bar’ ‐ the counter separa ng the publican from the public ‐ dates from the 1600s and is derived from the La n word ‘barra’ meaning ‘barrier’. In those days, beer would have been very different to what we drink today. It was generally homebrewed, much weaker than today’s beer and widely drunk in lieu of water which was usually unsafe, especially in towns and ci es. English ale was originally brewed without hops. Once hop flowers were added to the ale, beer was born. Today, beer encompasses a wide range of beverages from ales, bi ers and mild to lagers and stout. By the mid‐1600s, cheap spirits were being imported from France and Holland and these also became very popular. Pictorial pub signage developed at a me when many people were illiterate, and it was customary to have visual signs hanging outside shops (for example, the barber’s red and white pole or the three balls of the pawnbroker). Some popular pub names are in fact corrup ons of old English ‐ for example, the ‘Pig and Whistle’ is said to have evolved from the ‘Peg and Wassail’. A ‘peg’ was a unit of measurement

Page 14

Image: Tavern Scene (1658), Ar st: David Teniers II inside a tankard and ‘to wassail’ means to drink to someone’s health. In 1830, beer tax was abolished and there was a huge growth in unlicensed beer houses, which were frequently set up in people’s homes with different rooms for drinking in. Having separate bars developed further during the class‐conscious Victorian era, when people would segregate themselves according to social status. In 1869, the beer regula ons were ghtened again, heralding the growth of the brewing industry. Breweries began to take ownership of many of the public houses, leasing them back to landlords. Is the era of the public house coming to an end? Due to the current financial climate, many pubs have had to close their doors since the turn of this century, and those that remain are shi ing their focus towards becoming gastropubs. Breweries are also selling off their premises due to lack of profitability. One posi ve outcome is that there are more ‘free houses’ again and microbreweries are enjoying a resurgence as a result. Despite the decline, the Bri sh pub remains loved and admired all around the world for its atmosphere and character. And there is s ll nothing like having a pint in your local on a Friday night.

Nicky Morgan MP In order to appreciate current events it is always helpful to understand our history. I recently had the pleasure of visi ng the Civil War Exhibi on which is on at the Old Rectory Museum in Loughborough. This is a fascina ng period of history and the Midlands was the scene of some of the most drama c events and ba les. If you have some me one Saturday the exhibi on is open 11am-3pm un l October and I would really recommend it. It was deeply disappoin ng to be told in July that the Government does not intend to electrify the Midland Mainline – the intercity train line connec ng Leicestershire to London. The electrifica on project was confirmed by the Department for Transport in 2012 a er many years of lobbying. I had helped to lead a cross‐party campaign of MPs who worked with councillors, LEPs and business leaders up and down the line to make the case, both economic and environmental for our line to be electrified. At a me when the Government is wan ng us to move from diesel to electric cars it makes no sense to give the ok to trains and an intercity line which will s ll create diesel fumes. Millions of pounds have already been spent on preparing the line for electrifica on. Although we will s ll get some of the other planned improvements which will improve journeys I do feel it is very unfair that the Midlands should lose out on this major investment because the costs of other electrifica on projects in other parts of the country have been higher than expected. I shall con nue to call for our line to be electrified and to work with local councils and businesses on this.

Tip the pudding rice into the bu ered dish and s r in the milk and coconut milk. Add the caster sugar and s r again. Bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Carefully remove the dish and give the pudding a good s r, then s r in the honey and dot with a li le more of the bu er. Return to the oven for a further 1 hour 30 minutes or un l a golden skin has formed and most of the milk has been absorbed by the rice.

3

4

Tip

About 10 minutes before the rice pudding is ready, melt the rest of the bu er in a heavy– based frying pan over a medium heat. Add the apple slices and fry for 1‐2 minutes, turning once. Sprinkle over the demerara sugar and cook gently, without s rring, un l the sugar dissolves. S r in the cinnamon and apple juice and simmer for a further few minutes un l syrupy. S r the rice pudding (remove the skin first, if preferred) and spoon into bowls. Top with the apples and syrup and serve.

Ingredients: • 50g unsalted bu er, so ened • 100g pudding rice • 400ml full‐fat milk • 200ml coconut milk • 40g caster sugar • 1 tbsp runny honey • 2 red apples, skinned, cored and cut into wedges • 75g demerara sugar • 1‐2 tsp ground cinnamon • 2 tbsp apple juice

You can use other fruit slices instead of the apples – try peaches or pears or halved apricots.

The Importance of a Website We had a call this week from a company in Surrey asking about adver sing in Soar Valley Life… This company is opening a new office in Shepshed and wanted to announce their arrival in the area through a magazine such as ours. Looking on the internet, they entered “Magazines and periodicals in and around Leicestershire” and Soar Valley Life popped up on the first page. As you may have read in our last edi on, we’re in the process of building a new website, having Insight Consultancy helping us – see their advert below. We hoped to have it up and running by now, but with the personal events of the last couple of months and our requirements expanding somewhat, there has

Page 24

been a bit of a delay. But our old website is s ll up and running and con nues to provide good service; it does its job – as evidenced by our new adver ser from Surrey. The moral here is – without a website at all our new adver ser would never have heard of us. So, if you run a business and haven’t got a website, maybe you’re missing out; would‐be customers being unaware of your products or services. Part of the delay of commissioning our new website is that we want to offer every adver ser a mini web page of their own in our on‐line business directory and that takes a bit of extra me, thought and effort. But we’re nearly there! Keep watching this space... www.soarvalleylife.co.uk

5 Places Opened By Queen Victoria 1. Belfast ‐ The main building of Belfast’s Queen’s University was officially opened by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1849 when, owing to a citywide outbreak of cholera, it was one of only a few buildings that the royal couple were permi ed to enter during their trip. 2. Berwick-upon-Tweed ‐ Berwick’s Royal Border Bridge was opened by Queen Victoria in 1850. Designed by Robert Stephenson, son of the engineer George Stephenson, the bridge took three years to build and s ll forms an integral part of the East Coast Mainline today. 3. London ‐ A er the sudden death of Prince Albert in 1861, his plan for a ‘Central Hall of Arts and Sciences’ in London was renamed in his honour. Queen Victoria officially opened what is now The Royal Albert Hall in March 1871 but is said to have been too distraught to speak at the inaugura on ceremony, leaving her son Edward to instead announce that ‘the Queen declares this Hall now open’.

4. Manchester ‐ Construc on began on the 36‐mile Manchester Ship Canal in 1887, overseen by the renowned engineer Edward Leader Williams, who was knighted by Queen Victoria at the official opening ceremony in 1894. 5. Newcastle-upon-Tyne ‐ A remarkable dual‐level road and rail bridge, Newcastle’s Grade I listed High Level Bridge was designed by Robert Stephenson and constructed between 1847 and 1849. At over 400m, it is the second‐longest bridge spanning the Tyne and stands 80 above the water. It was officially opened by Queen Victoria on September 27 1849, shortly a er Stephenson turned down the offer of a knighthood. © Taken from The Bri sh Isles: A Trivia Gaze eer by Paul Anthony Jones

Care Home or Care At Home, Instead? The ques on whether to seek support and care in one’s own home or to move out into residen al care is something many families and individuals ask themselves in later life. As a na on, we are living longer and most elderly people find the upheaval of leaving their surroundings and own home hard to accept and would prefer to stay at home if possible. In 2016 the average cost of a residen al care home was £600 per week1. Many families are le with li le choice but to sell the family home to pay for this. Elderly individuals are assessed and means tested and those with assets of £23,250 or more will be responsible for all their care cost. However, many do not realise that those with assets of just £14,250 or more, will also be asked for a contribu on to their care2. For those individuals seeking care in their own home it can be a daun ng prospect. O en it is the families of the elderly loved one that undertake this task , a challenging one at best, especially for those rela ves not living close by. The average cost spent on receiving care in your own home is currently £187.19 in Leicestershire according to the BBC3. Since 24 hour care is o en not required, staying at home can be both more economical and viable. Clearly there are mes when a nursing home is the right choice for some individuals and families if greater support or nursing and medical care is essen al. However, families can o en suggest a residen al or nursing home much earlier than required if they feel they can no longer support their loved ones by themselves and are unaware of the

alterna ve support op ons available. Care at home can be flexible and packages built up to meet an individual’s needs. Home Instead Senior Care is a domiciliary care service that supports people to stay in their own homes for longer. The concept is that each person is an individual with individual needs. Home Instead believe that care, support and companionship should be offered long before ge ng to the point where an individual is struggling. With Home Instead care is given in order to enrich their life so they can con nue to live life to the full enjoying what they always have. Home Instead offer bespoke packages of care from 1 hour a week which can be built up to 24 hours a day as needs increase. Since a minimum of an hour’s care is provided during any one visit, me is spent as any other family or friend would: having a chat, helping in the garden, support to visit friends and groups, doing the washing or accompanying on the weekly shop in addi on to the poten al personal care that might be needed. The CareGiver offered by Home Instead will be the same CareGiver each visit ensuring strong rela onships can be built. There are alterna ves out there to a care home and if your loved one would like to stay at home, Home Instead would be happy to assist in making this a reality. 1 Source Which? The Oldest Sport in England? The earliest record of a game of lawn bowls dates back to the 12th century. This pre-dates cricket, football - either variety - tennis or any other ball game in history. Francis Drake was allegedly playing a game of bowls when the first sail of the Armada popped over the horizon at Plymouth Sound in 1588, if you remember your school history lessons. And here’s a fine bit of synchronicity for you: I have just seen that an old school friend of mine, who I have recently reconnected with on Facebook, who is a keen, crown green, team bowling player, has just lost to The Francis Drake Bowls Club! Hard luck, Mick! But, I digress ‐ fast forward to today where the very popular ALL SEASON variety of this most convivial of sports accommodates all ages and genders in all weathers, and we are extremely pleased to introduce you to our very own Charnwood Indoor Bowls Club. If you've never tried bowls before why not go along to one of their sessions held on Sunday mornings from 10am un l mid‐day when coaching is free. Bowls Development Officer, Wendy Coley, says: This is an opportunity to try a new sport, be more ac ve and get healthier. It is a very sociable ac vity for all ages

from 10 to 100. It is a great mul genera onal sport for men, women and children to play together as it is not dependent on strength or aerobic capacity. We cater for all abili es and wheelchairs are available for disabled par cipants as are aids for the visually impaired. Indoor Bowling can be as social or compe ve as par cipants require. We have purely social bowlers and also members who compete in county and na onal compe ons. In both cases it can be sa sfying and enjoyably rewarding. If you’d like to come on your own that is no problem and there are sessions on most days of the week where you can par cipate with other bowlers. We have a fantas c modern 8 rink bowls hall alongside the leisure centre in Browns Lane, Loughborough.

Motorways: Four Lanes, or Three with a Hard Shoulder? If you’ve driven on Britain’s motorways recently, you can’t fail to have no ced that the hard shoulder is some mes being turned into another lane. On some motorways this new lane is at mes a lane and at others a hard shoulder. Indica ons on gantries above the lanes tell you when this is the case. These roads are termed “smart motorways” and there are three types: those with “Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running”, ones with “All Lane Running” and a third called “Controlled Motorways”. So, what exactly are these?

When driving on a Dynamic Hard Shoulder motorway, expect the hard shoulder to be a lane at busy periods and a hard shoulder at other mes; when it’s a lane you can use refuges, placed every 500m or so, to stop in an emergency. All Lane Running is just that: the hard shoulder has gone, replaced by an emergency refuge every 2.5km. Controlled Motorways are like old style motorways: three or four lanes with a permanent hard shoulder. Except now the carriageways are subject to variable speed limits.

If you breakdown on the first two types of motorway, and can nurse your car to a refuge, don’t just set off a er fixing the fault: gone is the Highway Code direc ve of “gather speed on the hard shoulder and rejoin the carriageway”. Now you must contact the Highways Agency, who will then escort you back onto the carriageway. Sta s cally motorways are the safest roads in the UK, but with three lanes or some mes four, variable limits and no con nuous hard shoulder, it’s s ll best to know what kind of road you are travelling on.

What is Dry Eye? Dry eye is a chronic (long-term) condi on. This means that once you have had it, it can come back even a er it has cleared up. It o en affects both eyes, but one eye may be worse than the other. Who is at risk of dry eye and what causes it? Dry eye is more common in women and people aged over 65. There are many causes for dry eye; if the glands in your eyelids become less effec ve or blocked, the lids may become red and uncomfortable. In women, changes in hormone levels, for example during the menopause, pregnancy or while using the contracep ve pill, can increase the risk of dry eye.

My eyes feel dry, but they s ll water! The normal me for your tear film to last between blinks is over 12 seconds. If the tear film breaks up too soon, as is the case when a pa ent has dry eye, the sensi ve corneal nerves on the surface of your eye may be exposed causing your eye to tear excessively. This dilutes the oily layer that reduces evapora on of the tears making your eyes feel dry.

• Use eye lubricants. Most of these aim to lubricate your eyes by giving you extra moisture, available as drops, gels or ointment. Lubricants work by targe ng a specific part(s) of the tear film which has become defec ve. At Inter Eyecare Op cians, we will iden fy which part of the tear film is defec ve so that an appropriate lubricant can be recommended.

What can I do about dry eye?

Have treatment to stop the tears draining away

• Avoid using make‐up and keep your eyelids clean. Eyeliner, par cularly when put on the rim of your eyelid, may block the meibomian glands which produce the oily part of your tear film.

Small plugs, called punctum plugs, can be put into the holes in your lower eyelids to stop the tears draining away and help the tears to stay in your eye for longer. At Inter Eyecare Op cians, we offer this treatment.

Stand up straight – another easy way of improving your health... How many mes were you told to stand up straight when you were a child? You may not have realised the relevance but did you know that poor posture can lead to health problems? If you slouch you cannot breathe deeply which means there is less oxygen being taken into your lungs and therefore less oxygen available for your body and your brain to func on effec vely. This can result in breathlessness, fa gue, lack of energy and feeling red all the me. Slouching and slumping puts the body out of alignment which may result in headaches and backache and it is now thought that it may affect blood pressure. Slouching not only affects your physical health but it also makes you feel ‘low’ whereas standing up straight makes you feel ‘high’. So how do you adopt good posture? It’s quite easy: just loosen your arms and shoulders and imagine you are holding a £5.00 note between your shoulder blades. Try to get into the habit of doing this as o en as you can so that good posture becomes the norm. Paula Reed

Athlete’s Foot Athlete’s Foot is a fungal skin infec on. Symptoms include itching, cracked, blistered or peeling areas of skin with redness and scaling. It normally starts between the fourth and fi h toes and can spread around the foot. It’s caused by fungal spores which you can pick up anywhere (communal areas such as pools, showers and changing rooms). Le untreated, the fungus can spread to the nails causing thickening and yellowing which is much harder to treat. Fungal infec ons are contagious and can spread anywhere on your skin. Ensure feet are completely dry a er washing and before you put on shoes and socks. Change your footwear on a regular basis. Treatment depends on what type of Athlete’s Foot you have. There are creams, powders and liquids. You should avoid using an ‐fungal powders between the toes! If in doubt consult a qualified foot professional who can pinpoint the best treatment. Some products are not available over the counter – only from professionals e.g. Mykored

Skin Tag Removal Many people have skin tags which can be quickly and safely removed using Advanced Cosme c Procedures (ACP). These benign tumours grow to about the size of a grain of rice but can be as big as a raisin or even larger. They may be pigmented or flesh coloured and some may grow on a fleshy stalk. i.e. pedunculated. Skin tags commonly form in areas where there is fric on; where skin rubs on skin, such as in the

armpits, under the breasts, in the groin and on the eyelids. They can be a problem where jewellery or clothing rub and are common on the neck. They can even form just inside or under the nose. Whilst they are extremely common they can be distressing and, where clothing or jewellery irritates them, they can become very sore, While they may be treated for this reason most people have them removed because they consider them unsightly. Pennie Blatchford

Skin tags like this can be removed by ACP leaving smooth skin once the area has completely healed.

And Another Thing... Tom meets Parker Knoll by Tom Hughes

Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook

Whilst slumped in front of the TV one Sunday a ernoon, I watched through the pa o doors as the angry wind of late summer forced Sarah’s line of washing into a headless dance rou ne. Tired, bored, overcome with ennui, I sneered at a smug couple deciding not to cash in and buy a ramshackle pile of bricks on a Place in the Country. What to do? I decide to enlist the help of My Dearly Beloved. “Sarah? Do you want to have another stab at Line of Duty IV?” Enter my betrothed, purposefully wiping her hands on a tea towel. Clearly unimpressed with my virtually supine posi on, she said, “Thomas (immediate use of my Sunday name – bad start), do you think I’ve me to gawp at the box all day?” “But darling, it’s Sunday ‐ a day of rest a er the travails of the week.” “Well that’s fine, but I’ve got a house to run and anyway I’m not ploughing through the whole thing if you’re going to shout, ‘As if that would happen!’ every five minutes. And can you sit up properly? Look at that cushion; it’s prac cally on the floor. Actually, come to think of it…” As Sarah inspected the condi on of our oldest item of so furnishing, my blood slowly turned to ice. “In fact, that’s made up my mind ‐ I’ve put up with this ta y old thing for long enough.” “Are you leaving me?” “Not you, this sofa; it’s a disgrace.” “Olly likes sleeping on it.” “Well, when the new one arrives he will be relegated to his bed under the stairs.

So, strapped into the Mondeo Ghia, off we set towards that vast expanse of corporate real estate ‐ the retail park. “Let’s try this one first.” Sarah pointed at a bland unit sat in between an industrial sized chemist and a massive pet shop. We parked up and alighted onto the fading tarmac. Involuntarily, my shoulders began to sag. “What’s up with you?” Half‐heartedly I raised a solitary finger and pointed to a garish sign in the window. “Look Sarah, they’re actually having a sale. What amazing good fortune.” Through the double doors we went. A red‐looking chap in early middle age padded over. Wearing a badly fi ng e and a short‐sleeved shirt, he did his best to raise a smile. “Welcome to Furniture World. And today sir, you’re in luck. We’ve an offer on our Guardprotect™ ‐ guaranteed to resist every stain, which by the way also includes vomit and blood.”

You’ve got to stop trea ng him like a baby.”

Back outside on the pavement, Sarah and I had words. “Do you have to be so rude?”

I glanced over at my slumbering Best Friend, who ‐ mirroring his master ‐ raised an eyebrow of concern.

“I’m here to buy a couch, not re‐enact an episode of CSI Miami.”

We trudged into the next emporium where a wild‐ eyed woman with her hair in a ght bun clopped over at such a pace she was forced to use an armchair as a makeshi break. “Hi guys! I can see you’ve already been acquainted with Parker Knoll.” I looked around. “Is he the store manager?” A quizzical look from our new friend. “No sir, now sit down here next to me, come on, get comfy.” Gingerly, I eased myself down onto the sofa which, I had to admit, was indeed very comfortable. As the woman pra led on, my hand reached out absent‐ mindedly for the tag hanging off the arm. I turned it over and glanced at the price. Ninety seconds later, we were standing back outside the shop, where Sarah sighed, “Tom, I’m mee ng Hannah now for lunch.

Listen, come to think of it, it’s you who always sits on the blasted thing so I’ll let you decide.” And with that, off she went to meet our daughter. Later that evening, as I was sat in front of the TV working out who Balaclava Man could be, in walked Sarah, who a er looking around said, “So, where’s this amazing piece of furniture you’ve bought then?” I pointed to the corner of the lounge. “Luxurious, so and incredibly comfortable, I think you’ll agree.” Sarah’s gaze alighted upon Olly, curled up asleep in the middle of a huge round furry dog bed, comfy as anything. “You see, darling, you’re right once again ‐ we did need something to keep him off the sofa.” I glanced over at my best friend, who mirroring me once more, gave me a conspiratorial wink.

Pets By Ann Haldo Keeping Your Pets Safe This Bonfire Night

to the unusual sounds. Played at a low level during late October and early November, it can help your pet to cope be er on the night.

Bonfire Night can be a frightening and anxious me for pets, and it’s important to spare a thought for their safety. Keeping them safe and feeling secure is paramount during this me, so what can you do to help your pet deal with the sights and sounds of Fireworks Night?

Blocking out the noise

Calming tablets Your vet will be able to recommend various types of calming tablet that gently reduce anxiety and the trauma o en suffered on Bonfire Night. Flashing lights and loud noises create fear, which can some mes lead to aggression in a normally nonaggressive dog.

A safe den

‘Noise’ CDs These are CDs that play noises similar to those heard on Bonfire Night, and can gently acclima se your pet

Page 48

Make sure you draw your curtains and turn up the volume on the TV or radio to drown out the sound of fireworks. Close your doors and windows, not forge ng the cat flap if you have one. Provide a ‘den’ where your pet will feel more secure, giving them their comfort blanket or toy, or even an old piece of your clothing to help ease the anxiety. Keeping your pet indoors will ensure their safety, but if you do need to take them outside make sure they are wearing a collar and tag. www.bluecross.org.uk/petadvice/ fireworks‐and‐pets www.thekennelclub.org.uk/our‐resources/ kennel‐clubcampaigns/fireworks

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Thinking of buying a telescope for Christmas?

As the nights grow darker ‐ and with Christmas on the way‐ you may well be thinking of buying a telescope for yourself or as a present for a budding stargazer. Beware! Unscrupulous websites and mail‐ order catalogues selling ‘gadgets’ o en adver se small telescopes that boast huge magnifica ons. This is known as ‘empty magnifica on’ ‐ blowing up an image that the lens or mirror simply doesn’t have the ability to get to grips with ‐ so all you see is a bigger blur. As a rule of thumb, the maximum magnifica on a telescope can actually provide is twice the diameter of the lens in the case of a refrac ng telescope, or the mirror in the case of a reflec ng one, as stated in millimetres. So, if you see an advert for a 75mm telescope beware of any claims for a magnifica on greater than 150 mes.

Tracing Your Family History If you’ve already tried the initial research steps outlined previously, you may have collected quite a lot of information and photographs. Now’s the time to lay out a provisional family tree with all the people for whom you have any information. It’s also sensible to start a page of notes for each person, remembering to include where the information came from and a note of information held elsewhere, e.g. 2 photos in ‘Smith’ folder – to remind yourself what it is and where it’s saved. This will help you spot gaps in information: maybe you have a marriage and burial for a person but not their birth date. It may also show if you have misunderstood relationships between family members. Starting good record-keeping can save time and frustration later! The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE114 LF, open at 6.45 pm with refreshments for 7.30 pm start. Next meetings: 17 Oct 2017 – Soldiers’ Wives: Army Women in 18th Century – Dominic Johnson; 21 Nov 2017 – True Life Experiences – Leics Police – Richard Pollard.
