Alison
We are o en reminded how precarious life can be. On the first Sunday evening in April, a friend of a friend rang with some tragic news... We were informed of the sudden death of Alison Jacques, who lived in Quorn. We first met Alison at Loughborough University when I, Steve, was studying Crea ve Wri ng about ten years ago and we were on the same course together. Mary and I became friends with Alison and we worked together on a number of different projects over the years. She also distributed Soar Valley Life to all of Quorn and The Wolds villages in 2014 and 2015. Alison was a talented ar st, actress, writer and a lover of life. Over the last couple of years we’d been a bit too busy to catch up with each other and had consequently missed opportuni es to meet the latest one was an invite to see Alison in a play at The Guildhall in Leicester. She was on a na onal tour with the Blue Orange Theatre Company in their produc on of Lady Cha erley’s Lover. We couldn’t go because both Mary and I were suffering from the nasty virus that was doing the rounds last winter. We always hoped Alison might come back and work for the magazine in a crea ve role when the me was right for us all, but sadly that’s not now to be. Each year, around Christmas, Alison used to send us a card she had handpainted and this is one we received in January 2013. As a tribute to her, Mary and I have decided from now on to use the robin from her water colour pain ng in our Find the Robin compe on. Pictured here is Alison’s Christmas card. Rest in peace Alison x

Elderflower Cordial At this me of year I love to forage in the hedgerows for Elderflowers to make cordial. Fragrant, refreshing and simple to make it’s so much be er than anything you can buy. Mix with sparkling water to make a refreshing summer drink or add Gin or Vodka to start a summer party in style. I like to add it to salad dressings and desserts too. You will need: 30 elderflower heads, 1.7 litres boiling water, 900g caster sugar, 50g citric acid and 5 unwaxed lemons, sliced. Gently rinse flower heads to remove any dirt or li le creatures. Pour boiling water over the sugar in a very large pan, heat gently un l sugar has dissolved and
leave to cool. Add the citric acid, lemon slices and then the flowers. Leave for 24 hours in a cool place s rring occasionally. Strain through muslin and transfer to a sterilised bo le. Claire Jones

Slug Survival Whether your garden is big or small, or you have just a few planters in a back yard or on a balcony, the chances are that slugs will cause you grief. There are about thirty species of slug in the UK and most feed throughout the year, especially a er dark and when the soil is wet or moist – and now that spring is here, they’re out in force! However, most slugs actually do li le damage to living plants, instead preferring to feast on dead and dying material. Typically it is smaller slugs like the greyishblack keeled slug and the pinkishbeigegrey field slug which are more likely to wreak havoc. With es mates of there being about 200 slugs per average cubic metre of average garden soil, the situa on can soon get out of hand. Keeled slugs in par cular love to feast below ground, as well as on plants above the soil surface. In no me at all slugs can eat through the base of a young stem, killing the plant in the process, or eat seedlings even before they have had a chance to emerge above the soil surface! Later in the year, they will begin to tunnel into potato tubers and carrots too. They breed quickly and very efficiently, and you’re most likely to spot the clumps of eggs on the soil surface, beneath flopped foliage and amongst moist organic ma er. Each egg is about 12mm in diameter and a clear, milky or offwhite coloured sphere. So what can you do with these squidgy li le menaces?
Page 12
• Go on an evening slug hunt, in par cular a er it has rained or you have done some watering. • Choose vegetable varie es which have useful resistance to slugs. With potatoes, main crop varie es usually suffer most, so try to grow mainly earlies. Choose varie es such as Charlo e, Kestrel, Sante or Wilja to give a be er chance of success. • Encourage natural predators such as hedgehogs, frogs, toads, slow worms and ground beetles. If you keep hens consider le ng them clear the ground for you – but obviously only before you start plan ng and sowing! • Use the Nemaslug nematode control, a treatment I like because it is harmless to everything except slugs. It works swi ly and silently too and, if

Nicky Morgan MP Thank you to everyone who contacted their MP and those who work for them a er the recent terrorist a ack in Westminster to check we were safe. We will forever remember PC Keith Palmer who died keeping us safe and are appalled by the senseless deaths of four innocent members of the public on Westminster Bridge and the scores of others who were injured. I was in New Palace Yard on my way to vote in the Palace of Westminster when the shots which killed the terrorist were fired. Earlier in the day I had welcomed a group of Loughborough College students and staff to Westminster for a tour so they could see our Parliament and democracy in ac on. I am pleased to say they were all safely away from the parliamentary estate when the a ack happened. This was an a ack on our democracy but democracy will prevail and we will show those who seek to inflict terror that the way to disagree is to debate issues and not to use violence. Many of you will be aware of the consulta on which has now started into the future of children’s heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. I know many local families have benefited from the exper se of the staff at Glenfield and are appalled at the prospect of the surgery unit being moved. I agree with them and cannot believe this has been proposed again. Tens of thousands of local people have signed a pe on against the closure. It is now really important that people respond to the consulta on. The consulta on can be found here: h ps://www.engage.england.nhs.uk/consulta on/chd/ and advice from Leicester Hospitals on comple ng the consulta on can be found here: h p://www.eastmidlandscongenitalheart.nhs.uk/co nsulta on/ The consulta on closes on Friday 9th June. Finally, I was honoured to a end the Royal Maundy Community Lunch at Leicester Cathedral recently when HM The Queen visited Leicester to hand out Maundy money to 182 local men and women. It was great to see some of our local residents who have given wonderful service to our community honoured and very good to be able to welcome the Queen back to Leicester a er her 2012 Jubilee visit.

“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is me to pause and reflect.” Mark Twain
Is Your Child’s Future Financially Secure? The arrival of a newborn means thoughts about the future and, whilst nobody wants to think about not being around for our children, it's appropriate to plan now so that their future is as financially secure as we can make it. It seems daun ng but one of the easiest things a parent can do is to make a Will and there are numerous benefits: • Without a Will, the distribu on of your estate is governed by Intestacy Rules which priori se spouses/civil partners and blood rela ons; unmarried partners don’t automa cally inherit. This could mean a partner has no automa c right to remain in the home that they shared with you. • You can appoint a guardian, ie someone to look a er your child/ren upon your death; par cularly important in a situa on where both parents die in close proximity. • Stepchildren don’t inherit automa cally, and so if you wish to make provision you’ll need to make a Will. • Marriage/civil partnership revokes earlier Wills, so if you want to provide for children born before
you got married/entered into a civil partnership (or others) you will need a new Will. • Without a Will, only very close family stand to inherit; making a Will is an opportunity to leave parents, siblings and friends a legacy or personal item. • You get to decide who you want to be your executors with authority to deal with your estate. • A Will is an opportunity for Inheritance Tax Planning, to limit the amount of IHT payable. Because Moss Solicitors believe in the importance of making a Will, they are offering parents and grandparents a 10% discount if they make a Will before their child/grandchild’s first birthday. The discount also applies to Las ng Powers of A orney made before a child’s first birthday. The child needn’t be your first, so growing families can take advantage too! Simply call 01509 217 770 or email a.benskin@mosssolicitors.co.uk for further informa on.

Apricot Jam Swiss Roll Great for a tea me treat, this light sponge cake is best eaten on the day it’s made. For a chocolate version replace 25g of the flour with 25g si ed cocoa powder.

4
Bake in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes un l the sponge is pale golden and springs back when lightly pressed with your finger ps. Whilst the cake is baking, place a sheet of baking paper on a clean damp tea towel and sprinkle with 2tbsp caster sugar.
5
Quickly invert the hot sponge onto the paper and peel off the lining paper. Trim the edges of the sponge and roll up firmly from one short end with the paper inside. Leave to cool completely.

Living and Loving Life This comes easily to some but not to others. Being mindful of our thoughts can make a huge difference to our quality of life. “Energy follows thought" meaning whatever we are thinking about we are making more important. This is helpful to remember as it extends and opens out our choices on what to focus on. If we let troubles and worries dominate our thoughts it can seem as if we are protec ng ourselves from
'bad' things happening but that's actually not quite the case. The more we worry the more we train ourselves to worry and end up having even more to worry about. As a parent this has wider implica ons too, because we can teach our children to be worriers as well if we’re not careful. There
is a fine line between safety and a rac ng bad things into our reality. Luckily we can choose what we want to focus on. The mind is simply a part of the body and we can guide and instruct it in ways of living that can add colour, vitality and joy to life. Working with and on yourself is the best investment you can make. You are your own best resource. You can make your own choices of what to think about! Life coaching – giving you some answers. History The History of Hygiene
Pomanders would be hung in the wardrobe to sweeten the smell of stale clothing.
We take for granted the availability of hot water on tap and the vast range of personal hygiene products available. But in the Middle Ages, things were a li le different.
When clothes were washed, to remove stains, they were scrubbed with a mixture of urine, ashes and lye. Soapwort – a flower that lathers in water – was also used.
Describing the flooring of medieval houses, the social cri c Erasmus (14661536) said they “… are covered with rushes, occasionally renewed, but so imperfectly that the bo om layer is le undisturbed, some mes for twenty years, harbouring expectora on, vomi ng, the leakage of dogs and men, ale droppings, scraps of fish, and other abomina ons not fit to be men oned.”
Sanitary towels were washable rags filled with sphagnum moss, also known as blood moss and o en used in ba le for its absorbent proper es.
Outside, condi ons were worse. Our modern sewage system didn’t exist un l Victorian mes. In towns, waste from chamber pots kept under the bed was simply je soned out of the window to fall in the gu er below, unless you were lucky enough to be within spi ng distance of an open cess pit. Pavements were generally built high and gu ers would have been filthy places, running with vermin and excrement.
place, it was o en in a wooden barrel with herbs added to the water. Personal hygiene amongst the nobility was be er. Before dining, they would wash their hands in a stone basin called a laver (French for ‘to wash’). Castles also had garderobes or privy chambers – primi ve toilets consis ng of a stone or wooden bench with a hole cut in. Waste would fall into the moat below. The King had a servant specifically to wipe his bo om with the grand tle of ‘The Groom of the King’s Close Stool’. The groom looked a er the King’s personal commode and although it sounds like a grim job, it was a highly respected and trusted posi on.
Seasonal baths were recommended by the monasteries but understandably, large quan es of hot water were difficult to come by without the plumbing we enjoy today.
People didn’t change their clothing as o en as we do today so body odour was disguised with perfume. Lice were commonplace – even wigs could become infested.
Public baths had a poor reputa on and personal bathing was uncommon. When it took
Wealthy women carried nosegays to combat bad smells when outdoors.

Teeth were cleaned with a cloth and a herbal abrasive, usually ashes of rosemary and mint or powdered sage, followed by a vinegar mouthwash. When toothache became unbearable, people visited the local barber who was also a minor surgeon, hence the barber’s tradi onal striped red and white pole which stands for blood and bandages. Following the widespread outbreak of the Black Death, Edward III passed a law to clean up ditches and waterways. Although it would be around 300 years before bacteria were discovered, the link between poor hygiene and the spread of the disease had been no ced. Since then, thankfully, we have become cleaner. Some argue we have gone too far the other way, and that a li le dirt helps strengthen immunity – although I am sure that no one would want a return to the Middle Ages. By Catherine Rose

It’s hard to believe that less than a five hour flight from London, the vistas are similar to what you would expect to see in somewhere like New Zealand. The people are so overwhelmingly friendly and welcoming too. One of my many highlights was the lighthouse experience on Quirpon Island ge ng to

LANZA Celebra ng 50 years of styling excellence The story so far… Lanza Hair Design, at 57 The Banks, Sileby, was first established in 1967; so this year they are celebra ng a momentous milestone in their business history, their 50th birthday! The salon was originally founded by Mario Lanza, who trained in his na ve Sicily beginning at just 11 years of age. Wan ng to expand his talents to the UK, Mario moved to Loughborough a er receiving a work permit for Ron’s Barber Shop where he stayed for two years. Whilst working at Ron’s, Mario met John Cleaver and together they hatched a plan to set up a quality gents’ hairdressers; quite avantgarde for the me. The salon was named MarJons and they became specialists in the ‘Tony Cur s’ and ‘Teddy Boy’ styles, along with ‘Beatle’ haircuts and clients flocked there for Mario’s Italian style. In 1968 Mario returned to Sicily to find his Sicilian bride and soon met Cecilia. They began their new married life in that same year. Times and fashions were changing, Mario’s partner John Cleaver decided to go on to ventures new and the salon became Da Mario’s. Mario soldiered on through the 70s, expanding his talents into ladies’ hairdressing and the training of appren ces. With the coming of the 80s, business took an upwards turn;
guys wanted Kevin Keegan styles, mullets and perms and the girls wanted the feathered look of Farrah Fawcet Major. In 1985, at the age of 14, Mario’s eldest son, Roger, joined the business as a Saturday boy and his father taught him the art of barbering. Roger went on to pursue his hairdressing career with a view to increasing the salon’s female trade. At the age of 20 he a ended the highly acclaimed Vidal Sassoon academy and went on to sweep the board in a major compe on which a racted more than a hundred stylists. The compe on was held in honour of his father’s 25 years in hairdressing and Roger gained 149 points out of a possible 150 and went on to work for the Steiner group. Here he gained further experience and skills in ladies’ hair styling, which he took back to the family business. Roger’s brother, Cris ano, is also a renowned hairstylist, holding the appointment of Educa onal Director at the Vidal Sassoon Academy. Chris ano shares his interna onal knowledge through training sessions influencing the Lanza team in interna onal state of the art trends. In 1999 Roger purchased the salon from his father who took the opportunity to re re. In 2000, the salon became Lanza, as it’s known today, with a modest team of just 3 stylists. Roger developed the business with a strong youth training scheme and has ins lled his passion for recrui ng and developing young talent in the business. Today Lanza has 14 staff and are on the look out for more, both
Roger Lanza in 1987
appren ces and qualified stylists. Staff reten on at the salon is something of which Roger is very proud. ‘We run the salon with the same core family values on which my father founded the business, ’ said Roger. ‘I have supported my staff throughout their careers and they are as passionate as I am about suppor ng the family business and maintaining the high standards for which we are known. My team tend to stay here just like my customers!’ In 2003, it was love at first sight when Rachael came for an interview and they were married a year later. They live in Queniborough with their 3 children, Rocco 11, Lorenzo 9 and Siena 4. It looks like the family legacy will con nue as Siena combs her brother’s hair every morning so watch out for the next genera on of hairdressing talent! The salon's official 50th birthday party was on Friday 28th April. Guests included 15 of the salon’s original customers with special seats reserved for them in the original barbers’ chairs! To mark their landmark birthday, there will be special offers throughout the year, star ng with a 50% off for new customers having a cut and colour! Here’s to the next 50 years in style!

Teaching to Tie Shoelaces Teaching someone how to drive can’t be that difficult can it? I’m proud to say I have just qualified as an observer with my RoSPA Advanced Drivers group, which you can train to do a er passing the Advanced Driving test and allows you to tutor others wishing to take their test. I found the observer test nervewracking, as not only are you passing on your skills to a third party as they drive but you are being observed in what you say, and do, by the examiner in the process. A er the drive both par es provide an assessment of my experience and the ability of passing it on. Now I love driving and I want to be the best I can at it. I want to posi on the car correctly on the road, at the right speed for the condi ons, make progress and

observe hazards and deal with them. But for me, actually passing that experience on to another driver was like teaching my children to e their shoelaces. Once mastered, you just e them automa cally. But the act of explaining how you do it that’s different. It’s much the same with driving a car: if you’ve ever explained to someone the procedure for finding the clutch bite point, you will realise just how much of what you do is “in the grey ma er”. So I salute driving instructors around the country, teaching others the skills of controlling a car; it is an art and skill that needs pa ence to deliver, and not all are capable of doing it. By Iain Betson

Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra These small domed, pedunculated or platelike growths are a type of Seborrhoeic Keratosis and, like them, tend to increase in size and number with age. They are very common on adults with black skin, tending to form in clusters or chains on the face, neck, upper back and chest. It is
es mated that up to onethird of people with Type VI skin are affected. There is a strong likelihood of a hereditary factor and there is some sugges on that they are caused by a defect within the hair follicles. Women are more likely to be affected than men. Like Seborrhoeic Keratosis, the lesions are benign and no treatment is necessary unless for cosme c reasons. If removal is required, the precision afforded by advanced electrolysis can normally

Corns & Callous – what’s the difference? Callous is an area of skin which has thickened a er repeated trauma or fric on. Callous forma on is very common and harmless in most cases. However, in diabe cs it can pose problems. Corns are ellip cal shaped, thickened areas of skin which usually occur when pressure points in shoes rub against the skin. There are two types: hard and so . Hard corns occur on flat rough skin; they are shaped like a funnel and can cause deep ssue ulcera on. So corns occur between toes; they are moist and the centre is firm. Poorly fi ng shoes are a common cause of both corns and callous. They can also develop if you have a type of foot deformity, such as a bunion or hammertoe, which causes a bone protrusion to rub on the inside of your shoe. Self help: • Wear comfortable shoes and socks • If in pain see a foot professional • Moisturise your feet • Gradually file rough skin away – not all at once

Before Treatment
A er Treatment
• Itching or scratchy eyes • Sore eyes • Redness and inflamma on • Dry eyes • Eye rubbing If so you could be suffering from blephari s. This is a long term inflammatory disease of the eyelids caused by an overgrowth of normal bacteria living along the lid and base of the eyelashes. Anyone can get blephari s but the prevalence increases with age since as we get older we make fewer natural an bodies in our tears. As the eyelids can be difficult to keep clean, overgrowth of bacteria, biofilm, scurf and debris can accumulate over the years and the toxins released from bacteria
can cause irrita on and subsequently damage the eyelids and tear glands.
The Procedure Inter Eyecare now provide the most up to date treatment available to alleviate this troublesome condi on. The procedure is called BlephEx and is en rely painless , using patented and revolu onary
equipment which cleans along the edge of your eyelids and lashes, removing scurf and debris and exfolia ng your eyelids. The Worst Thing You Can Do to Your Body One of the worst things that you can do to your body besides the obvious drugs, ea ng junk food, excess sugar, etc. is pu ng it through emo onal and environmental stress. It’s not the stress that wrecks your health, it’s the chemical changes it causes in your body... Stress comes from various sources i.e. your thoughts, your job, your rela onships, over exercise, excess sugar, and use of s mulants such as coffee, tea, alcohol and drugs. These things increase the amount of cor sol in the body which will affect the immune system causing poor health. All you’ve heard about stress being related to illness is absolutely right. If you’re stressed out, you’re going to get sick. The best way to avoid ge ng sick is to avoid ge ng stressed in the first place. Make sure you adopt a healthy lifestyle, eat healthily, get plenty of fresh air and exercise and take me to relax. Use techniques such as mindfulness, prac ce yoga or tai chi and treat yourself to a relaxing facial, massage or a reflexology treatment if you can. Try it and see how your health will improve. Mar n Laver is All about TOURS There is a brand new, fully independent, tour operator in the East Midlands – but it’s owned by a familiar name. Mar n Laver, alongside his partner Caroline, has been in the local industry for 25 years, but recently took a 2 year break to pursue other projects. Now he’s back with a collec on of largely ‘escorted’ tours by coach, air, cruise & rail – throughout the UK, Europe & beyond. “Two years is a long me, but the family are excited about the new venture. We want to provide a firstclass, personal experience for our customers,” says Mar n. Their 32page colour brochure offers to transport you to Cornwall
or the Canary Islands, Hampshire or Honolulu and most places in between. Following their successful launch in October 2016, one of their feature tours to Scotland’s Highland Railways is already sold out! “Other departures are beginning to book up too, but in our first year it’s crucially important to get our name and quality of service known to as many people as possible,” Mar n added. If you would like a FREE copy of the All about TOURS holiday brochure for 2017, or latest supplement, why not give them a call on 0333 733 1188 and see where they could take you?
Entertainers Kieran & Sarah, from Britain 's Got Talent with Mar n Laver at the launch break.

ROADSHOW
COMES TO TOWN THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in The Ramada Hotel, High Street, Loughborough and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Krugerrand
Breitling
Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.
Amber Urgently Required
Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.
So on Wednesdays 17th May and 14th June you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Listed below are a few items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! LADIES – LOOK IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOXES If you have any old broken rings, chains, earrings, old gold wrist watches or items with stones missing, then bring down the box and let us surprise you. Amber and Jade, costume jewellery – high prices paid. WE MAKE HOUSE CALLS IF YOU ARE UNABLE TO VISIT For further information or an appointment please contact us on: 07930 157 944 any time. We specialise in watches and listed below are just a few of the makes we require – BROKEN OR WORKING – ANY CONDITION Omega, Rolex, Breitling, Patek, Philippe, Vachron PLUS MANY OTHER MAKES

Have you watched the BBC programmes Flog It or The Antiques Road Show? Our format is exactly the same, but we offer the chance to sell without the uncertainty and commission to the Auction House and if you are unsuccessful at auction there may still be charges to pay. East Midlands Antiques realise that there are some very unusual items that require the exposure of a major auction house and we would be pleased to advise in such cases. However many items do not warrant this and East Midlands Antiques will offer accordingly. Come and try the friendly and discreet service we have provided for many other people like yourselves over the years.

And Another Thing... Tom and the Pub Quiz by Tom Hughes

8 pm and, like a whippet detec ng a downwind hare, Sarah (my Dearly Beloved) li ed her chin and flared her nostrils. “Tom, what’s that you’re wearing?” “This old thing? I’ve had it ages mind you, it matches my eyes beau fully don’t you think?” “Not the shirt, that a ershave.” “I think it’s Warrior by Captain Spice.” “Listen here Don Juan, don’t get any ideas about making moon eyes at the new barmaid down the Old Paraffin Lamp.” “How did you know about listen, she’s I’m not err.” “Tom, stop stu ering.” “It’s the pub quiz. Me and Nigel are having a stab at the jackpot. And it’s a roll over seventy quid!” “Well if you hang on a moment I’ll come with you. Three heads are be er than two.” Resistance being useless, I acquiesced, knowing that Nigel would be pleased, carrying as he did the niest of torches for my betrothed. “Sarah! What a lovely surprise! Sit yourself down here next to me.” Nigel’s gushing immediately raising my hackles as Sarah coque shly played with her hair and plonked down next to him. “Now, here is our answer paper, here’s a li le pen.” “Nigel, she’s not six.” “You leave Nigel alone, he’s only being kind. Now, what are we going to call ourselves?” “How about Team Sarah?” beamed Nigel. “No, no. Team Nigel, I insist,” beamed Sarah. Smarmy Nigel was ge ng on my wick. “Listen, never mind the name who’s going to the bar?” “White wine for Sarah and I’ll have a pint please, Tom.” Defeated, I trudged forlornly to the bar. Slouching over the worn mahogany I waited for the elegant curves of our new barmaid to appear. But Fat Frank waddled into view, wiping his hands on a towel. “What’ll you have Tom?” I flicked my eyes around Frank’s considerable girth. “Where’s Diane?” “Oh it’s her night off. Hey, who’s that on your table giggling at Nigel’s jokes?” “That Frank, is my wife.”
Page 54
“Punching above our weight are we, Thomas?” Ignoring the boorish comment, I returned laden with refreshments and se led down for the contest. Quizmaster Barry, in his annoying nasal whine, began with his prequiz announcements. “Now everyone no Googling phones away please. Right, off we go. Ques on one in what year did women get the vote?” Triumphantly, I grabbed the paper and scrawled down the answer. My other two teammates peered down at the date. There then ensued a bun fight that would have embarrassed Jeremy Paxman. Dates and events flew around the table as The Bellringers on table three (pens down, arms folded) sat smugly, nursing their drinks. On went the ques ons (and the arguments) un l eventually the quiz ended and we all swapped papers. The Bellringers had our ques on paper. I glared over as they gurned and squinted at our scribblings, as though they were unreadable. Barry read out the answers. “Ques on one. Women got the vote in…1928.” Sarah glared at me. “I told you Nigel was right!” Shamefully I buried my face into my pint. Then Barry collated the scores and announced, “We have a draw! Team Sarah and the Bellringers are both on 42

Like two prize fighters, we stared each other out. The room fell silent. I felt my heartbeat thumping in my ears. “OK, first to answer wins the jackpot. In the children’s TV programme Trumpton, how many firemen were there?” My mind desperately flashed back to my youth. “Seven!” I shouted. My opponent yelled, “Six.” Victorious, I beamed over at our table. Then, catastrophe Barry handed over the money to the Bellringers. “What are you doing?”
“They’ve won. Six is the correct answer.” Incandescent, I protested. But Barry was not for moving. Closing his eyes he said, “Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub. Six. Sorry Tom. You lost.” Burning with injus ce I got in Barry’s face and hissed. “And Captain Flack is SEVEN!” Barry reddened and, mumbling something about the rules, scu led away. Sarah was unimpressed. “Well, if you’d been a li le be er clued up about women’s suffrage instead of women’s bodies or Trumpton Firemen for that ma er we would now be £73.50 to the good.” Some mes life (and quizzes) can be so unfair. Pets Page By Ann Haldo Three Types Of Food That Are Poisonous To Your Dog If your dog has ever ingested a poisonous substance, you’ll know the sudden and devasta ng effect it can have on their health. Unfortunately, three commonly used foods regularly cause serious issues for dogs, o en requiring emergency treatment by a vet. Chocolate Chocolate contains a poisonous substance called theobromine, which is derived from the cocoa plant. Amongst other symptoms it can cause severe vomi ng, diarrhoea, high temperature, irregular heart rhythm, and fi ng. Dark chocolate contains more theobromine than milk or white chocolate, and it is not unusual for a dog to need veterinary interven on even when a small amount has been consumed.
Page 56
Onions, leeks, chives, garlic and shallots All members of the allium family, these foods can cause anaemia in dogs and are poisonous both in their raw and cooked form even something as innocuous as onion gravy can cause a severe reac on in some dogs. They contain organosulphides which a ack the red blood cells over a period of me. A er a few days you might no ce your dog has an upset stomach, is lethargic, sleepy, or breathing rapidly. Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas These can all be fatal to your dog, although the dried versions are believed to be more toxic. Some dogs are able to eat these foods with no ill effects, but others experience serious illness over a period of several days, with vomi ng and diarrhoea, and in some cases kidney failure a few days a er inges on. h ps://www.pdsa.org.uk/takingcareofyour pet/poisonsandhazards h p://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/media/605397/ poisons.pdf

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia The Grand Finale for Cassini A er almost 20 years in space, NASA's Cassini spacecra begins the final chapter of its remarkable story of explora on: its Grand Finale. Between April and September 2017, Cassini will undertake a daring set of orbits that is, in many ways, like a whole new mission. Following a final close flyby of Saturn's moon Titan, Cassini will leap over the planet's icy rings and begin a series of 22 weekly dives between the planet and the rings. While it's always sad when a mission comes to an end, Cassini's finale plunge is a truly spectacular end for one of the most scien fically rich voyages yet undertaken in our solar system. From its launch in 1997 to the unique Grand Finale science of 2017, the CassiniHuygens mission has racked up a remarkable list of achievements. On the final orbit, Cassini will plunge into Saturn’s atmosphere, sending back new and unique science to the very end. A er losing contact with Earth, the spacecra will burn up like a meteor, becoming part of the planet itself.

Tracing Your Family History Many people consider doing this but wonder how to start. A great place is by talking to senior members of your family. It costs nothing but is a resource that will disappear. Begin with an open question to trigger their memories, such as, “What can you remember about my mum/dad when they were young?” Once these are flowing, you can gently try to pin down when and where the events happened. Have pencil and paper to note down what you hear. Recording the conversation is also a good idea but remember that some folk find that intimidating. A word of caution: some family stories become distorted in the telling but remember that there’s nearly always a nugget of truth waiting to be discovered. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45 pm with refreshments for 7.30 pm start.
