I, Steve, took a series of courses beginning in 2002 to learn more about what makes us behave and live in the way we do. The whole experience changed my thinking and set me on a different path for the rest of my life. You may know it as Life Coaching, Work/Life balance, self help or self healing. The name I give it is Neuro Linguis c Programming NLP for short. On the first day of the first module, we learned about rapport and the importance of it when we interact with other living beings. In fact I learned that it is extremely important, if not absolutely vital, to have rapport with your own self. The presenter, himself a master at crea ng rapport, had us all spell bound from the off, regaling us with instances in everyday life where rapport, or the lack of it, is evident and the consequences, good and bad, of maintaining or breaking it. Ever since then, for me, people watching has taken on a whole new level. In restaurants, where a couple are enjoying a meal together, I will no ce they pick up their glasses of wine at the same me not even knowing they’re doing it. They will walk down the street together not realising they are in step. They will mirror each other’s ac ons when they are conversing and again they won’t be doing this consciously. Of course, we each of us have an innate ability to create and maintain rapport, it is part of ge ng on with others, making friends, finding a life partner, ge ng a job and so on. The purpose of learning about rapport is that it gives insight or an indicator into what’s going on. Once you realise this and we have choices about most of the situa ons we find ourselves in in our lives we have op ons to choose a different course. I remember one very powerful analogy the presenter used. He said, “Think of an orchestra and think of the beau ful sound they make when they have rehearsed and all play from the same score. They all play in tune.” O en these days I find our business is in perfect accord, in perfect rapport, with another business. In fact, in this month’s issue, there’s just one short of a hundred businesses in tune with Soar Valley Life. And there’s one in par cular, with whom we have a special rapport and we’ve got together to promote each other throughout the Soar Valley. They are Fosse 107 and they play pre y good tunes as well!

Growing from Seed There are few gardening pursuits that are as rewarding as growing from seed. I never cease to be amazed by the poten al contained within a ny seed. It isn’t always an easy task as different seeds have different requirements, so to ensure they get off to the best possible start always refer to the seed packet for specific sowing

and a ercare instruc ons. My favourite easytogrow annual is Cosmos ‘Purity’. A superb filler for borders, it makes an excellent cut flower too. You can expect to enjoy blooms from midJuly right through to the end of October and it’s great for pollina ng insects with its large open flowers of pure white. For help and advice to make your garden beau ful this year why not book a consulta on with me. Claire Jones

If yes, you will need to open a PAYE scheme and submit your payroll details to HMRC each month. These are just a few of the basics that must be addressed as soon as your company starts to trade. Get Your Soil into Shape A fundamental garden need is good quality soil; it is key to bigger flowers and heavier crops. And there is s ll me to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest. Frosty weather can be useful, as it can save work with heavy clay soil. If you roughly dig or fork it over, the frost will act on the large lumps of clay and break them down somewhat, making them more manageable. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet, especially if the soil is clay or slightly heavy loam. If you can’t avoid walking on wet soil, use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load and reduce damage. Forking a heavy soil rather than digging with a spade will reduce compac on, but either way the soil surface usually ends up pre y lumpy. Reforking, breaking up the large lumps, followed by a final raking will help you get closer to that ‘fine lth’ o en described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic ma er such as leaf mould, wellro ed manure or garden compost helps feed the soil naturally and improves its texture, so that it holds the right amount of moisture for as long as possible – and there is s ll me to fork this in now. Create free organic ma er by making a compost heap or bin, and turn autumn leaves into leaf mould, a wonderful soil condi oner.

Page 14

Incorpora ng some hor cultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. Avoid builders’ gravel or grit – it can damage or kill garden plants. If you have lots of small stones or larger lumps of flint in your soil, remove them before plan ng your flowers and vegetables. Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can result in forked or deformed root vegetables. Alterna vely, invest in raised beds and fill them with stonefree soil. Manure adds both texture and food for your plants. It should be good quality, with few addi ves, and free from weeds, especially troublesome ones like ne les, docks and couch grass. In recent years, manure contaminated by the weedkiller used to

Derry’s Nurseries, well worth a visit... control weeds in pastureland has devastated plants. Try to buy from someone local who you can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure must be wellro ed – ideally it should have sat in a heap for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed and condi on your soil, and help suppress weeds and protect the soil from wind erosion. They work especially well on parts of the garden where plants are not grown year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil to rot down. Sow seeds later this year – there are lots to choose from, including red clover, mustard, field beans, phaecelia and field lupins.

Nicky Morgan MP February 6th 2018 was the 100th anniversary of the date the Representa on of the People Act was passed which enabled some women and all men to vote in elec ons. 1918 was also the year the first female MP was elected. The ability to vote was further extended in 1928. I know a number of local events are already planned to mark these important milestones. If you’d like to organise an event, par cularly if you work in a school or with groups of young people, then please do let me know as there are lots of resources available to help. More details on Parliament’s plans can be found at: www.parliament.uk/vote100 The fabulous Na onal Forest sits just on the edge of Charnwood. Since its incep on in 1995 8.5million trees have been planted in the forest and it has become a hub for tourism, leisure and educa onal ac vi es. The Government has announced, as part of its 25 year Environment Plan, the crea on of a Northern Forest. In Parliament I was recently able to ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to ensure that those involved in this new forest project use the exper se of everyone involved in the Na onal Forest and he was very happy to agree. In November 2017 MPs, councillors and business representa ves from across the East Midlands got together to host a summit to push for more investment by the Government in our East Midlands infrastructure. The East Midlands has massive economic poten al with strengths in manufacturing and engineering.

But the East Midlands is losing out in terms of public investment. At the summit we pledged to work closely together to increase the region’s share of public infrastructure investment from 60% of the English average in 201516 to 100% of the English average by 2020. In Westminster I’m pleased to be an officer of the crossparty East Midlands All Party Parliamentary Group of MPs and we recently met to decide how we will be working during 2018 to build on the work of that summit. Vanilla bean paste has a very intense flavour so use sparingly. If unavailable use 1tsp vanilla extract or for a change of flavour try 12 tsp coffee extract instead.

say for sure is that many lawns will be ready for some TLC come the Spring. A er a Winter of mixed weather, lawns will soon start to look yellow, sparse and very mossy. GreenThumb’s treatments will provide the lush, green, weed free lawn that you have always wanted. Spring Lawn Care Tips: • Make sure that your mower has been serviced and that the blades are sharp, to avoid tearing or bruising the grass. • When you give your lawn the first cut of the season – aim to remove only the top third of growth. Remove too much all in one go and the grass will look very yellow.

Most customers are now op ng for lawn treatment programmes, payable by monthly direct debit. These programmes offer greater service and flexibility which rivals are unable to provide. The Enhanced Programme starts from as li le as £11.25 per month.

• When the grass growing season is properly underway, mow the lawn at least once a week.

The Bri sh weather will remain unpredictable, but what we can

• NEVER cut the grass shorter than one inch.

Page 24

• Apply a Spring blend, nitrogen rich feed to the lawns. • Spray weeds with a product which is recommended for use on grass – some weedkillers will get rid of everything – including your lawn! • Use a halfmoon edging iron or straight spade to smarten up the edges of the lawn. This will also help prevent grass spreading into borders. • If we get a dry spell of weather, remember, the grass will benefit from being watered. Top five ps on buying a new home Just Great Music!

Buying a new home is a significant step. Whatever the reason for your move, you’ll need a solicitor to act for you in the process known as conveyancing. Below are our top 5 conveyancing ps: 1. Consider the type of service you’re buying Today, you can use a tradi onal firm or an online call centre service. Modern call centres may appear more cost effec ve however they don’t provide the local, personal service given by tradi onal firms who have dedicated conveyancers that clients are able to contact directly to discuss issues.

2. Shop around Ensure all quotes you obtain are comparable. Solicitors usually charge legal fees, plus VAT and disbursements such as search fees. Ensure there is clarity about addi onal fees for issues that may not be known about at the start of your transac on. 3. Searches When purchasing a property, there are several searches conveyancers can undertake. These include Local Authority Searches and Water and Drainage searches. These iden fy responsibili es for road maintenance, plans for nearby housing, whether the property is connected to the mains water, flood risk and other issues.

4. Ask ques ons You might wonder if you can park your caravan on the driveway or if you’ll have to pay to use a shared private driveway. Whatever your ques on your conveyancer will assist you if there is something you’re unsure about. 5. Be sure of what you’re buying Your conveyancer will show you a ‘ tle plan’. This shows the full outline of the property you’re buying. It is recommended that you personally visit the property to check that what is shown on the plan agrees with what you’re buying on site. This will help avoid confusion over whether that land at the side of the property is yours or not and confirm you’re buying what you think you’re buying.

Screen me – facts for parents (part 1) Just Great Music!

Most parents worry how much me their child is spending on digital devices. Here are the facts: What is blue light? Sunlight contains red, orange, yellow, green and blue light rays. Combined, this spectrum of coloured light rays creates what we call ‘white light’ or sunlight. Blue light is a highenergy visible light and has shorter wavelengths. It is known as blue light because it is on the violetblue band of the spectrum. Blue light is naturally present in sunlight but is also something we can see from screens such as TVs, computers, smartphones and tablets. Can blue light damage my child’s eyes? There is currently no scien fic evidence that blue light causes damage to the eyes. However, there is evidence to suggest that carrying out near tasks, involving looking at something closeup, such as using mobile devices, screen me and reading a book, can increase eye strain for those who do this for long periods of me.

What is digital eye strain? Digital eye strain happens when a lot of me is spent using near vision, for example, reading on screen or playing online games. Digital eye strain does not cause permanent damage to your eyes but can be uncomfortable. One of the main symptoms is temporary blurred vision but other signs such as sore and red eyes, dry eye and headaches are also associated with digital eye strain. Can blue light affect my child’s sleep pa ern? Using screens close to bed me may contribute to poorer sleep, which may mean your child’s concentra on levels are lower during the day. This may be because blue light is linked to the suppression of the hormone melatonin which makes us feel sleepy. However, there is a range of other factors linked to disrupted sleep. In part 2: I will discuss ways of keeping your child’s eyes healthy. Vinesh Patel – Inter Eye Care, Rothley

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes

Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook Just Great Music!

Tom Receives a Proposal II If you recall, Dear Reader, previously on And Another Thing, my old chum and workmate Nigel had been fatally struck by Cupid’s bow and had resolved, for reasons best known only to himself, to make an honest woman of Val, his long term squeeze. Yours truly was appointed best man and was duly tasked with organising the stag do. So, a er rejec ng Newcastle (too chilly), Amsterdam (too hazy) and New York (too far), Nigel, being a big fan of the Beatles, plumped for Liverpool. And so it came to pass that twelve middleaged workmates alighted the train at Lime Street and, rucksacks in hand, trudged towards the Adelphi. We were standing in the lobby when Terry (marke ng) unzipped his suitcase, pulled out an enormous flesh coloured rubber suit and presented it to the groom. “Here Nige, the lads want you to wear this.” Nigel stared at the object for less than a second. “Terry, put that away and don’t be silly.”

“Don’t worry Bri, if I see any strange women approaching you, I’ll be sure to let them know you’re completely off limits. Right, everyone follow me Liverpool here we come!”

Now it was my turn. “Here everyone, put these on.”

And so The Dirty Dozen hit Liverpool’s bars. As I was best man, it was only reasonable that I was in the chair for the first round.

Twelve black tshirts appeared “WATCH OUT LADIES IT’S NIGEL’S STAG!”

“OK, what are we having?”

A few of the guys pulled them on over their shirts, the material straining to cover their considerable girths. Colin, Nigel’s brother (clearly miffed because he wasn’t the best man), objected. “I can’t wear that it won’t go with these chinos.” “Listen Colin, if you prefer, I can ring Val and see if you can go on the hen do?” Then it was Brian’s (finance) turn to pipe up. Brian was bald, 5’ 3” and wider than he was tall. He squinted through round spectacles. “Tom, do I have to wear one? What if I get cha ed up? I won’t be able to look Margaret in the eye.” Brian blinked as he pushed his mistcovered glasses back up his li le nose.

Page 50

Colin was the first to pipe up. “Err, Tom, can I have a lime and soda?” “No. You can have a Guinness. Ken?” “I’ll have Guinness. And I’ll have Colin’s too if he doesn’t want it.” A er a few ales, in order to line the stomach, we repaired to a prebooked Chinese restaurant. A er a gutbus ng banquet, it was me to se le up. On the back of a napkin, Brian to ed up one twel h of the bill. “Right, that’s £31.50 each please.” Colin cleared his throat. “I don’t want to be picky, but I never had the soup, so technically…” Colin’s protesta ons came to an

abrupt end when Big Larry (transport) shoved a banana fri er down the back of Colin’s shirt. As old friends were reacquainted and new friendships made, the laughter grew louder and the hugs became more frequent. By six o’clock, spirits were high. By eight, the atmosphere was convivial. By ten, the conversa ons were dis nctly lachrymose. Colin, a confirmed teetotaller, was crying into his umpteenth Guinness as he put his arm around my neck. ‘Yer know summat, Tim?”

something else that Nigel adored would forever be unknown, because it was at this point that Colin fell backwards into a po ed plant and collapsed into a drunken stupor. Then it hit us no one had seen the groom. A er a fran c search Nigel was located si ng under a street lamp, toying forlornly with the hem of his tshirt. Slowly, I eased myself down next to him. “What’s up, old chum?” “Tom, am I doing the right thing?” “Well, I don’t think this pavement is doing much for your piles.”

“Tom.” “You know summat Tom? Our Nige, well he, he, loves the very, the very, the very…” “Bones?” Colin stopped midstu er and shook his head. Unfortunately, whether it was my skeleton or

“No, marrying Val. I mean, you love your Sarah, don’t you?” Oh goodness, now it was my turn to start the waterworks. But as for Nigel, well I began to wonder if his toes hadn’t begun to turn ever so slightly chilly...

Pets

By Ann Haldo Just Great Music!

Protect Your Cats and Dogs in the Garden This Spring If you’re enjoying the warmer weather this spring me, and spending more me in the garden with your pet, here are a few ps to keep both cats and dogs safe and well, and avoid any urgent visits to the vet. Seasonal plants Some spring bulbs and plants can be poisonous to dogs and cats. Daffodils, in par cular, cause problems if ingested, but other plants such as tulips, hyacinths, crocuses and clema s are also toxic. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomi ng, and lethargy, poten ally leading to dehydra on and convulsions. In cases where the most poisonous plants have been consumed, the a ereffects may be seen within 15 minutes.

Page 52

Chocolate Easter eggs Chocolate contains theobromine, which is highly toxic to your dog or cat. Although dark chocolate contains the most theobromine, the levels in milk chocolate are also sufficient to cause serious health problems. It’s advisable to consult your vet as a ma er of urgency if you know that your pet has consumed chocolate – symptoms include rapid breathing, hyperac vity, seizures, vomi ng and diarrhoea. Slug and snail pellets As spring is ‘slug season’, you may be tempted to use slug pellets to control this problem in your garden. Dogs and cats tend to find slug pellets tasty, however, and as many brands contain a poisonous substance called metaldehyde, your pet’s health is at serious and immediate risk a er inges on. Look out for symptoms such as muscle spasms, seizures and lack of coordina on, and contact your vet as a ma er of urgency. www.nawt.org.uk/advice/keepingpetssafespring www.pets4homes.co.uk/petadvice/springsafety ps fordogowners.html www.vetsnow.com/2017/01/springhazardscats/

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Spacecra snaps new farthest fromEarth images Part One

For a short me, this New Horizons image of the open star cluster NGC 3532 (aka the Wishing Well) taken December 5, 2017, was the farthest image ever made by a spacecra , breaking a 27year record set by Voyager 1. Image via NASA/JHUAPL/SRI. New Horizons spacecra , which visited Pluto in 2015, acquired the rou ne calibra on frame of the Wishing Well star cluster on December 5, 2017. For several hours, the Wishing Well image – acquired with the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) – was the new farthest image ever made from Earth. The previous furthest image was the famous Blue Dot photo taken 27 years ago by the Voyager 1 spacecra at 3.3 billion miles distant. To be con nued. How to Prevent Flu Naturally The number one way to prevent flu and other respiratory infec ons is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for about 30 seconds. Never rub your eyes or touch your nose and mouth without first washing your hands. Make sure you eat healthily as 80% of your immune system is in your gut. Reduce your alcohol and sugar levels which suppress the immune system and make sure you are sufficiently hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Reduce your stress levels using techniques like yoga, mindfulness and medita on to help you to relax. Why not treat yourself to a stress relieving therapy like reflexology, massage or a facial? Try to get 8 hours of sleep every night as sleep depriva on can reduce immune func on. Take a good Vitamin D supplement as this helps to fight off infec ons but make sure that it is paired with vitamin K to make sure that it is safely absorbed. Take plenty of exercise as this is a great stress reliever. It also boosts your immune system by increasing circula on which allows an bodies to travel more easily and faster through the body. Compared to Register Offices, county Record Offices hold widely varied collections, including, e.g. Parish records, Electoral Rolls, Land Tax records and maps. They may have local government records, such as planning applications, school and pre-NHS hospital records though for both the latter 100 year closure usually applies. They may have material deposited by local employers, such as factories, plus period trade directories. Militia lists may survive, also WW1 documents, such as copies of war diaries for local regiments though coverage may be patchy. Some hold photographic collections too. A further source for these can be libraries which are the most likely place to access old local newspapers. In future episodes, we’ll explain a little more about these records and how they may help your research. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.
