Never mind the width feel the quality Welcome to our biggest magazine yet - 80 pages and s ll coun ng... In order to begin the process of building our next magazine we start off with 64 pages. Our regular adver sers are already booked in, together with space for our regular features, ar cles, crossword, quiz and so on. We then add newcomers and in order to maintain the integrity of our ethos ‐ that we are a feature based community magazine funded en rely from our own adver sers ‐ we choose to adhere to a ra o of approximately 65% adverts to 35% features and ar cles. That’s been a bit of a ba le this me as we have had 3 new adver sers each wan ng a double page spread: Red Band, Loughborough Endowed Schools and East Midland An ques. On top of this we have had a further 15 newcomers as well as returners with seasonal adverts ‐ Charnwood Brewery, Birstall Garden Centre and Independent Traveller. By the me we had paused for breath, some me on the Monday before the deadline, we were up to a total of 80 pages. Our previous record was with the same edi on last year at 72 pages. Our stalwart printers, Automedia of Loughborough, never quite know what’s coming and I am sure they sit there bi ng their nails on deadline day wai ng for our copy. At 80 pages we are now at the capacity of their s tching and folding equipment and if we get any bigger they will have to assemble the magazine in two parts, bringing them together at the end. When we started out on this amazing journey more than 6 years ago, we never imagined we would grow this big, that we’d be giving our printer such a challenge. Back then we struggled to fill 32 pages, 18 months later we were filling 48, a year later 64, then 72 and now 80. Add to this how many copies we have printed which is now 33,000 magazines delivered to different addresses over two months and you can perhaps see the measure of our growth. And the reason, we believe, is because we strive to create the very best li le magazine in Charnwood ‐ never mind the width then, its all to do with the quality!

Nicky Morgan MP Thank you to all those who booked stalls and a ended the Ageing Well event I held in Loughborough with Age UK Leicestershire & Rutland recently. We had a wide variety of stalls there offering advice on how to prevent falls, how to find the right care facility, how to support carers, relevant financial advice and planning and how to keep healthy as we get older. I was par cularly delighted that we were able to raise funds for the campaign to get an Admiral Nurse in Leicestershire. Find out more here: h ps://www.nickymorgan.org/news/virtualageing-well-event Planning con nues to be a ma er of great interest to Leicestershire residents. The Government recently announced na onal plans to get more homes built. This is welcome news for everyone who wants to own their own home but we know that new housing brings addi onal pressure on local infrastructure such as our roads, schools and GP surgeries. And it is disheartening to see more planning applica ons being made and approved when exis ng sites haven’t been started, which leaves other sites vulnerable to development. In March I asked the Housing Minister about the plans and what Government can do to support councils such as Charnwood which has planning permissions for 10 years of housing. The Minister pointed to changes being made to the Na onal Planning Policy Framework and also to a report the Government has commissioned about the ‘build‐out’ rates of new sites. MPs recently debated myalgic encephalomyeli s (some mes called chronic fa gue syndrome). This was a short debate specifically to look at something called the PACE trial which conducted research into treatment for ME. There is now significant cri cism of this trial and the treatments it recommended. About 200,000 people in the UK suffer from ME. The chances are that at least one, and probably more, Soar Valley Life readers will be sufferers or know someone who is. Because we only had me allocated for a short debate there were many MPs who couldn’t speak on behalf of their cons tuents and so we intend to ask for a longer debate.

Crea ve Containers Colourful containers are a welcome sight in any garden, and pots, planters and troughs can transform a dull back yard or a gloomy terrace or pa o. Plus, wacky and more unusual planters can easily be created with a li le imagina on and ingenuity. Plas c flower pots can be transformed by wrapping them in hessian. Available in a range of colours from classic pale brown to reds, greens and blues, it’s weather‐tolerant and tough but looks great. Plas c pots are more exci ng with a bit of plan ng around the sides, so cut holes just over an inch in diameter at regular intervals around the sides to create a planter perfect for small bedding plants. Fill with compost to the base of the lowermost holes, add plants through the holes, add more compost to the next layer of holes and con nue upwards, finishing off with plenty of colour on the top. Acrylic paints are ideal to colour a boring or discoloured container. Use a single colour to match exis ng garden features, or the colour of your front door or window frames, or design a pa ern of wild, fantas c colours for a planted‐up art gallery. Mosaic les from your local cra or hobby store can be used to cover a container, or if me is short to just make a mosaic rim. Use rich colours to make a Moroccan style pot. Protect it when winter comes by placing it in a frost‐free spot, unless you use the grou ng adhesive used for swimming pools to make it more weather resistant. Old tyres filled with compost make ideal planters, and can be stacked to make deeper versions. Trailing
Page 18
flowers – such as trailing geraniums – cascading over the edges give a really striking effect. An aged wheelbarrow is great for a larger display or permanent plan ng. If there are no holes in the pan of the barrow, place a layer of gravel or stones in the base so that the compost does not become waterlogged. An old wellington boot makes a stylish planter. Fill the foot and ankle area with gravel or grit for drainage, add compost and plant up the top. Acrylic paints can jazz up a boring pair of wellies, but make sure the paint is dry before you start plan ng.

Derry’s Nurseries, well worth a visit... Old gardening, walking or work boots have plan ng poten al too, and because they have heavier soles and are lower to the ground they are useful in a less‐sheltered place. Plant up with bright bedding, or for a long‐term display use a few house‐leeks or sempervivums – their fleshy rose es of leaves in shades of green and purple look great! An old kitchen or bathroom sink can be put to good use; either remove the plug to provide drainage or fix it firmly in place with sealant to make a miniature water garden. I’ve even seen a loo cistern packed full of trailing plants including blue and white lobelia and trailing silvery foliage plants. The mass of blue, white and silver made a great waterfall of colour from an otherwise boring water closet. By Pippa Greenwood

Rico a Stuffed Pork
Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour
This is a great way to jazz up pork steaks for a midweek meal. Serve with brown rice or creamy mashed potatoes on the side, if liked.
1
Place the pork steaks between two sheets of cling film or greaseproof paper and bash with a rolling pin un l very thin.
2
In a small bowl, mix the rico a cheese with the chopped basil and lemon zest and season lightly with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Place a spoonful of the cheese mixture at the base of each piece of pork then carefully roll up to enclose the stuffing and secure each with a wooden cocktail s ck.
4
Heat the oil and bu er in a large non‐s ck frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the pork rolls for 4‐5 minutes, turning once un l browned all over. Pour in the stock and sherry or apple juice and simmer for 20‐25 minutes un l cooked through. Remove the pork rolls and keep warm. Chocolate Fondant Puddings
Serves 4 Ready in 45 minutes
Don’t overcook these divine chocolate puds or the centres will set and you’ll lose the gooey molten middle. You can prepare them a couple of hours in advance and bake them just before serving.
1
Preheat the oven to 190C/fan 170C/gas mark 5. Lightly bu er four 300ml capacity ramekin dishes (see Tip) and sprinkle with a li le of the caster sugar.
2
Place the chocolate and bu er in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave un l melted. Remove from the heat and s r un l smooth. Cool for 5 minutes.
3
In a large bowl whisk the eggs and remaining caster sugar together for 5 minutes un l very thick, pale and creamy, then whisk in the chocolate mixture. Si over the flour and gently fold in using a metal spoon.
4
Tip
Divide the mixture between the four dishes. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15‐20 minutes un l the puddings have risen and are just set on the outside – the tops should s ll wobble when pressed lightly. Run a knife around the edge of the puddings and turn out onto plates. Dust with cocoa powder and icing sugar and serve immediately with whipped cream and strawberries. If you don’t have ovenproof ramekin dishes, you can use small metal pudding basins or ovenproof teacups.
Page 22

Cranesbills for Versa lity Cranesbills (hardy Geraniums) are such versa le plants; I use them a lot in my designs. There are varie es that will cope with dry shade such as Geranium phaeum, varie es that look good in a mixed border and Geraniums for the front of the border; the most popular being Geranium ‘Rozanne’ which won the RHS Chelsea Flower Show ‘Plant of the Centenary’. Its large, summer long flowers look great when tucked into the front of a border or used for underplan ng roses. It grows to around 60cm tall and copes well in full sun or par al shade. Another cracker is Geranium ‘Brookside’ (pictured) it is excellent for suppressing weeds at the front of a mixed herbaceous border or as part of a blue‐
coloured themed scheme. In mid‐summer plants that are beginning to look jaded can be rejuvenated by removing old flowered stems and leaves. Claire Jones

A LIFE ON FIRE A Life on Fire tells the story of one of Leicestershire’s best loved and well known businessmen – former president, chairman and managing director of the Great Central Railway, and Chairman of Ford & Slater plc of Narborough Road Leicester tells his story. His remarkable memory takes us back to when the Luftwaffe flew over Leicester to blitz Coventry in 1940 and at just 3 years of age an old mechanic told him that one day he would be “An Engine Engineer!” We travel the world with him, to Africa, America, Australia, Arabia and the Isle of Man as he guides global Corporations, Aero Clubs, inland marine enterprises, the GCR and many more from the 1960s through to the the present day.

Seborrhoeic Keratosis These domed or plate-like growths tend to increase with age, hence the outdated term “senile wart”. They are not warts and, rather than being viral, are the result of excessive growth of epidermal (skin) cells...
Extensive seborrhoeic keratosis
A er removal using advanced electrolysis
Although the exact cause is not known, they tend to be more common in sunlight exposed areas. Their surface can vary from slightly rough to very hard and crusty with colour ranging from pale to very dark brown. They can be from a few millimetres to several cen metres across and some mes they can become sore or itchy.
Many people feel they are highly disfiguring and will conceal them with clothing whenever possible. Since they are usually raised, concealing those on the face with make‐up is rarely successful. At one me they could be removed on the NHS, generally by cryotherapy (freezing), but this is now very rare
as these benign growths are considered only to be a cosme c issue, not a medical one. Advanced electrolysis is an excellent treatment for removal of these blemishes and generally leaves li le or no evidence of the defect. Once healing is complete the skin is flat and so .

ROADSHOW
COMES TO TOWN THE EAST MIDLANDS ANTIQUES ROADSHOW arrives in The Ramada Hotel, High Street, Loughborough and offers local people the unique opportunity to come along and have a free valuation of any item and possibly be made a firm spot cash offer without any obligation. Krugerrand
Breitling
Mr Franks recalls an instance the last time East Midlands Antiques were in the area, when a couple came along with a selection of old broken and incomplete rings, a few items of unusual jewellery and an old broken gentleman’s wristwatch, expecting only a small amount and they were totally amazed to receive over £2,000. Another astonishing story was when a crystal vessel estimated at just £100-£200 was sold for £220,000. So why not take this chance to search through your attic, drawers and cupboards, to see if you could also be sitting on a fortune. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed. You will find our representatives most helpful, courteous and friendly. There is no obligation to sell, so if you just require a free evaluation, no problem. All transactions are strictly cash.
Amber Urgently Required
Mr Franks said the reasons for choosing the area are numerous. Many valuable articles were found in the last visit to the area. For instance on one occasion this year a Rolex, valued at £2,000-£3,000 fetched a staggering £48,000. The hotel is well known to local residents and is well placed with plenty of car parking available.
So on Thursday 17th May you have the chance to visit the hotel and see our accredited buyers and valuers absolutely free. Mr Franks has over 20 years experience of professional valuations and now his expertise is available at no cost to you. Specialising in oil paintings, water colours and many other articles. Medals, decorations and orders are one of the most collectable items and East Midlands Antiques has a waiting list of collectors and customers willing to pay for these articles. Listed below are a few items we require, but due to limited space not everything is listed, so if you are in any doubt, bring it along! LADIES – LOOK IN YOUR JEWELLERY BOXES If you have any old broken rings, chains, earrings, old gold wrist watches or items with stones missing, then bring down the box and let us surprise you. Our format is exactly the same, but we offer the chance to sell without the uncertainty and commission to the Auction House and if you are unsuccessful at auction there may still be charges to pay. East Midlands Antiques realise that there are some very unusual items that require the exposure of a major auction house and we would be pleased to advise in such cases. However many items do not warrant this and East Midlands Antiques will offer accordingly. Come and try the friendly and discreet service we have provided for many other people like yourselves over the years.

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Astronomical Twilight
Special Events Calendar for May 2018: 1/5/6 May: Moon passes Jupiter, Saturn and Mars in the morning sky and on the night of the 7/8 May shoo ng stars from the Eta Aquarid meteor shower fly across our sky and the best views will be before the moon rises at 01.30.
Just a er sunrise at Stonehenge on midsummer day From the 23rd of May un l the 21st of July our skies will not be dark in astronomical terms. This is because the geometric centre of the Sun's disc is between 12 and 18 degrees below the horizon. i.e. a small amount of sunlight s ll pervades our skies. To the naked eye, and especially in areas with light pollu on, it may be difficult to dis nguish astronomical twilight from night me. Most stars and other celes al objects can be seen during this phase. However, astronomers may be unable to observe some of the fainter stars and galaxies as long as the Sun is less than 18 degrees below the horizon – hence the name of this twilight phase. In the middle of this phase is our Summer sols ce, the exact point in me when the Sun reaches its highest al tude of the year at the Earth’s geographical North Pole. This occurs at 11.07 BST on the 21st June this year. At sunrise at Stonehenge on the Summer sols ce day, the Sun rises from behind the Heel Stones ‐ pictured ‐ and aligns exactly in the centre of the two Slaughter Stones in the foreground. Apparent brightness of some objects in the magnitude system
On the 9th May Jupiter is at opposi on to the Sun and is the closest to Earth in its orbit. She shines at a respectable ‐ 2.5 and is above the horizon all night long. Saturn at Mag + 0.3 rises in the south‐east around midnight and Mars at mag ‐ 0.4 rises a li le later around 2am. On the 17/18 May there’s a glorious sight of our Moon low in the western sky ‐ with the crescent Moon up close and personal to Venus, the queen of our night sky blazing at magnitude ‐ 4.0 in the north‐west and se ng almost three hours a er the Sun. Calendar for June 2018: Mars more than doubles in brightness during June and rises about midnight. Venus s ll reigns supreme at Mag ‐ 4.0 and is above the horizon un l a er midnight. Towards the end of June li le Mercury joins Venus which you’ll find to the lower right of the evening Star. Saturn shines all night long at mag ‐ 0.0 and through a small telescope you could see her brightest moon, Titan.

Screen me – facts for parents (part 2) Just Great Music!
In part 1 I discussed what blue light is and how it can affect us. Why have I heard that blue light is harmful to eye health? Several studies have been carried out into the effects of blue light and research in this area is s ll ongoing. Some past studies have revealed that exposure to blue light can lead to changes in animals’ eyes. However, because the me and intensity of exposure to blue light in these studies was far more than that of natural daylight and that of screens, this does not show that blue light is harmful to eyes. Is there a link between screen me and shortsightedness? Short‐sightedness, or myopia, is increasing throughout the world. Family history, ethnic background, environment (living indoors, in ci es) and carrying out near tasks, such as screen use, have all been linked to the development of myopia. However, there is no clear evidence to suggest that screen me alone is the direct cause. But, there is
good evidence to suggest that children who spend more me outdoors are at lower risk of developing short‐sightedness. Tips for keeping your child’s eyes healthy 1. Get them outdoors – regular play and exercise can help prevent or reduce the development of myopia (short‐sightedness). Studies show two hours of outdoor ac vity a day is ideal 2. Use night se ngs ‐ using night se ngs, if your device has them, may help children sleep by reducing the amount of blue light given off by the screen during night‐ me hours 3. Make sure digital devices are turned off at least an hour before bed me 4. Book your child in for a sight test every two years, from the age of three, or more o en if your optometrist recommends it At Inter Eyecare Op cians, we are happy to see children of any age including babies. Pregnancy triggers many different changes in a woman’s body. Foot pain is one! O en affec ng the front of the foot. A study showed an increase in pressure shi ing from the heels to the middle and front of the feet in pregnant women. Hormones that are released to prepare the body for child birth also cause relaxa on of the ligaments in the feet resul ng in a change in strength and support of the foot. Baby grows, so weight increases and so does pressure on the foot. A er birth the pressure is reduced but then the baby grows and gains weight rapidly. Carrying on the hip causing even further uneven pressure on the now flat feet! (Over pronated). By middle age, women experience even more foot problems especially plantar fascii s. Sit Less and Move More In a 24 hour day, humans are meant to move for roughly half the me. As soon as you’ve been si ng down for a few minutes, the body starts to go into “hiberna on mode.” • Calories burned drop to 1 calorie per minute (that’s low!) • Metabolism slows down 90% a er 30 minutes of si ng. • The enzymes that move bad cholesterol slow down. • The muscles in your lower body are literally “turned off.” • A er two hours of si ng, good cholesterol drops by 20% • A er a day of si ng, insulin sensi vity decreases by 24% • A er two weeks of si ng for more than six hours a day, you increase your triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and reduce insulin sensi vity by 40% • A er one month of si ng for more than six hours a day, your muscles start to atrophy • A er one year of si ng for more than six hours a day, you lose one percent of your bone mass What can we do? You have to rethink your life. Everyone will figure out what they can do to sit less and move more. This isn't all or nothing, and every step in the right direc on helps. Paula Reed

Tom Receives a Proposal III So, Dear Reader, if you have been following the story of starcrossed lovers Nige and Val, you will have read about the joy of the proposal and the fun of the stag do. And now, inevitably, we must turn to the day of reckoning - the dreaded nup als. “Tom? Tom!? Get up!” Bleary‐eyed, I reached for the clock. Six am. “Another ten minutes darling then I’ll…mmm” But my promises of coopera on disappeared into the folds of Egyp an co on as I curled up and toasted my toes in the warmth of My Dearly Beloved’s recently departed half of the matrimonial bed. “Tom, get up! There’s so much to do.” “In case you haven’t no ced, it’s not us ge ng married, it’s Nige and Val ‐ not that I wouldn’t do it all over again…” But my lame dribbling cut no ice with Sarah, as she prepared to reverse herself into her ou it. “Go and get a shower and leave me in peace.” Like any husband with an ounce of gump on, I took my cue to evacuate the scene. Showered, changed into my trackies and with my own ou it hanging on the back of the dining room door, I padded downstairs. Standing in the hall, I shouted up to Sarah. “Darling, I think some of the flowers have been delivered by mistake. There’s a weird plas c bunch here on the side.” Sarah leaned over the banister, a clean ssue clamped firmly between her red lips. With her brow furrowed she said. “Tom!
Page 54
That’s my hat!” I stared at the thing with fresh eyes. “Oh I see! Err, how does it stay on your barnet though? Not that it isn’t gorgeous…” A sigh from above as a white ssue with a perfect red‐lipped imprint landed at my feet. Now it was my turn to look the part. The crisp linen shirt was nego ated with ease. My cravat, however, presented more of a challenge. “Sarah, what do you do with this? And where’s the rest of my waistcoat?” Sarah reappeared, now a vision in turquoise. “Look, I told you to go for a second fi ng. They tell you how it all goes together.” Thankfully, in a flash of feminine husbandry, I was ready (almost). Pa ng my lapel, Sarah stood back to admire her handiwork. “Right, off you go to Nige’s. Hang on ‐ you’ve got shaving foam on your earlobe.” I eased my Mondeo Ghia X down Nige’s cul‐de‐sac and presented myself at his door, only to be greeted by pandemonium. Kelly, Nige’s sister prac cally dragged me inside. “Thank goodness you’re here. Can you go upstairs? Nigel’s locked himself in the bathroom.”
I paused for a moment to wonder at her orange face. “Fine, but I’ve le my tool bag at home.” Kelly shook her head. “What? Blood and sand ‐ why are men so thick? Tom, he’s refusing to come out!” Then it finally dawned. Two seconds later I was sat on the landing carpet, gently tapping on the bathroom door.“Nige? Are you there?” Eventually, Nigel replied. “What do you want?” “Oh I was wondering if you had any ps for Haydock Park next week? What do you think I want? What the heck are you playing at?” “Tom, I’m scared.” “You’re scared? Imagine what Sarah will be like if I tell her I couldn’t talk you out of the bathroom? Listen, mate ‐ marriage is scary, it’s a commitment, it’s a responsibility, it’s being sensible and its being mature ‐ it’s everything we boys hate, so of course you’re scared. I’m permanently terrified. But Valery is sat drinking champagne with curlers in her hair giggling with her Aun e Joan. Are you going to let her down? Because if you don’t open that flipping door, I’ll kick it in and flipping drag you there myself!” A pause, then from behind a bedroom door I heard a ripple of applause. Five women of a certain age appeared, all intent on giving me a hug. Eventually, the bathroom door unlocked and there stood Nigel in his morning coat and underpants. “Right sonny Jim ‐ put your pants on and let’s go and get married!” And get married, Dear Reader, is precisely what Nigel did.
“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” Orson Welles

Helping Your Dog Deal with the Heat of Summer
Heat stroke is a serious risk for dogs in the summer because they can’t lose heat through their skin as we do. Even on a warm day, if they can’t seek out shade or water to cool down, they can suffer irreparable organ damage, which is o en fatal.
Page 56
So how do you prevent heat stroke, what are the symptoms, and what can you do to help? Is your dog suffering from heat stroke? Signs and symptoms of heat stroke include: • Rapid breathing • Heavy pan ng • Lethargy • Agita on or disorienta on • Drooling • Vomi ng and/or diarrhoea • Fi ng/seizures Preven ng a disaster Being aware that your dog is very suscep ble to heat stroke is a major factor in preven ng it. You should make sure that: • They aren’t locked inside the car on a warm day.
• Your dog has ready access to shade, and plenty of cool drinking water. • You don’t over‐exercise them, or take your dog out during the ho est part of the day. What to do if you suspect your dog has heat stroke You need to cool your dog down, but without making them too cold once the pan ng has stopped. Seek help from a vet as a ma er of urgency, even if you’re not sure whether they’re in danger. Organ failure can occur over a longer period of me, and fast ac on can save their life even if you think everything is fine. www.telegraph.co.uk/pets/newsfeatures/keep-dog-cool-summer-heat www.metro.co.uk/2017/06/20/how-tokeepyour-dog-safe-in-the-heatwave-6722194

Exam revision - it's not “rocket science”! The summer exams are almost upon us and household stress is on the rise as students (and their harassed parents) try to prepare, with varying degrees of success. Volumes have been wri en about how to revise, but our advice is simple. Sit at a proper desk. Have a metable, star ng early in the day. Take hourly breaks to stay fresh. Have drinks and snacks to hand. Take notes and prac ce on past papers in a suitably calm environment (no TV) Pos ng yellow s cky notes around the house is a great way to recall key informa on as you will associate it with a loca on. Most importantly, whatever technique works for you, the remaining study me will fly by, so stop pu ng it off ‐ get on with it! We are a local company, employing local tutors to help children at Key Stage 2 and 3, GCSE, AS and A level, to be the best they can be at Maths, English, Sciences, Languages ‐ any subject. Driving Mr Ford - in a Toyota! Just Great Music!
Over the last year I (Steve) have been helping a friend write his memoirs. Most Fridays I’d spend two or three hours with him whilst he talked about his life and work. Each weekend I’d write my notes up into chapters un l, some 12 months later, we were ready to publish. (See page 28) We found a specialist book printer and set a date to go and meet with them. They happened to be in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Coincidentally, Jonathan Carlisle of Farmer and Carlisle had asked if I would like to test drive and review one of their new hybrid cars. I put two and two together and on March 8th Bill Ford and I set off in the brand new Toyota C-HR Hybrid Crossover. Bill Ford is no ordinary person. He is re red now, as one would expect at the age of eighty; un l a couple of years ago he was Managing Director of the Great Central Railway plc and at one me he ran his own family business of Ford and Slater. Over the years he has also headed massive global enterprises such as Unilever’s Automo ve division as well as Toyota and Ford franchises in the Middle East and America. What made him special, on this day as my passenger, was that he has owned more than a hundred cars in his life, many of which would be classed as supercars ‐ Ferraris, Aston Mar ns, Bristols, Jaguars, etc. and I was more than a li le curious as to what he might make of this comparably humble machine we were travelling in today. I had never driven a Hybrid, or a Toyota, before and upon first sight I did think that the style really wasn’t ‘me’ at all ‐ too many creases and bulges for my liking. I didn't have to unlock it or put the key in the igni on, it knew I had the key in my pocket and I just pressed a bu on to start it up. The first thing I no ced was erm... nothing! That’s right, nothing.
It’s as quiet as a sound proofed booth on a windless night. When you set off there’s no engine sound at all as it uses electric power to get going. I filled up with unleaded petrol taking only about forty pounds worth to fill it to the top. “That’ll never get me to Kings Lynn and back!” I thought. It was rush hour, so I couldn’t really put the car through it’s paces but every me I stopped in traffic, so did the engine. Star ng off again, there was s ll no engine sound as it was using only electricity and it was as smooth as I could ever imagine, especially with it’s automa c transmission. Once I had picked up Bill from his home in Kibworth we hit the open road. Crikey! What a car this is! “Lively, isn’t it?” exclaimed Bill, hanging on to his seat as we rounded a hairpin near Uppingham at just below the speed limit. Then, somewhere near Wisbech on the other side of Peterborough, we stopped ‐ dead. “No wonder I don’t travel this way very o en,” I thought. We were stuck for an hour and a half on a single carriageway main road in the fla est landscape this side of the flat and desolate wastelands of Siberia. Mind you, we talked about anything and everything: wives, cars, Africa, families, airplanes, boats and bloomin’ road works! And for that hour and a half we used no fuel at all ‐ all electric on stop‐start duty! Once we got going the huge ‘infotainment’ screen guided us perfectly to our remote printer’s loca on in the ny li le Norfolk hamlet of Blackborough End. Our business done and hands shaken, we set off back home. I was ge ng confident now and so was Bill:“You’re quite a good driver aren’t you, Steve?” He had let go of the seat sides now and seemed far more relaxed... This Toyota really does motor superbly; maybe not quite like the Astons or the Ferraris, but for a car in the genre of the staid and thri y hybrid league, it was a good division or two above what I’d expected. Returning the car at 4.30 pm bang on me, I noted that I had half a tank le , the MPG read 52 and we’d spent 29% of our me on electric power only. Significantly, as we’d entered Great Glen, just before Kibworth, powering around the lanes past the church to drop Bill back home, he’d remarked, "This car is rather quite good, isn’t it? Hmm...a Toyota, you say?”

South Africa’s Wine Lands and How to Visit Just Great Music!
Wine has been a long standing feature of South African life. The first vines were planted in Constan a in 1652 and the first wines produced in 1659. Ever since then wine has been a part of South Africa. Constan a is now really part of greater Cape Town but you can s ll find patches of grapes being grown. The area is no longer considered part of the wine lands although demand for wine from this par cular region has resulted in 11 new wine farms being established in the last few years. The Winelands The area between Franshoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl is less than 1 hour away from Cape Town. One op on is to take a bus tour from Cape Town for the day to experience the many facets of wine produc on in the area. We offer two op ons: the larger bus which visits some good wineries of the more popular wines you have come to associate with South Africa; the other, a more personal trip with a driver guide visi ng the smaller more cra wineries; more expensive and more suited to a real wine buff. Many however want to stay in the area and there are 3 towns that all offer accommoda on and a somewhat different experience in each. Stellenbosch the home of South Africa’s oldest university and the second oldest wine growing area the first vines being planted in 1679. The town itself has some good restaurants but at mes can be a li le busy. We would suggest a property just out of the main area which would be quieter at night. Evergreen Manor is one we use regularly.
There are some excellent wineries in this area and also some really good places to eat at very affordable prices. Hotel costs tend to be lower and several of our partners have excellent wine tour operators based on site with access to the off the beaten track but great wineries. Distances are small, less than 20 miles from one end to the other. It is easily possible to visit all the areas in a day and all our wine tour partners will travel throughout the whole area. Given the great climate in South Africa other areas also make good wines; for instance, the Chenin Blanc’s of the Roberson Valley en route to Montague are a real gem. The area around Hermanus is an up and coming area for white wine produc on, with the slightly cooler condi ons influenced by the sea, which aid in producing high quality white wines. South Africa produces some great sparkling wines ‘champagne’ like in style.
Franschhoek at the other end of the valley, has a reputa on as the ‘foodie ‘capital of South Africa. There are some very fine restaurants in the area but they are also quite expensive and quite hard to get reserva ons unless you book well in advance. Many proper es now insist on a 2 night minimum stay.
If you are travelling to Outshoorn along highway 62 then you will pass through Calitzdorp, the centre of the Cape Port region. South Africa makes some really nice port and the brandy is really good as well! South Africa’s unique wine is Pinotage. A heavy red wine, perhaps a bit rough around the edges at mes but the good ones are fantas c!
Paarl the old working town of the Winelands and as such perhaps retains that real working town feel.
Start planning your very own trip today and experience these stunning wines and loca ons.

Tracing Your Family History Parish records are possibly what most people wish to examine the first time they visit a county Record Office because parish registers hold details of baptisms, marriages and burials. They are essential for tracing your family before Civil Registration began in 1837. As it wasn’t at first an offence not to register births or deaths, these registers may also help in tracing children named in censuses whose birth wasn’t registered but who were baptised. Always check the catalogue for other surviving parish records, such as vestry or account books where your family names may appear as rate payers or receiving poor relief. Even better, you may find an early signature where a forebear rendered accounts as Overseer of the Poor or Highways. Depending on the individual recordkeeper, other unusual tit-bits of information may have been noted so allow time to browse! The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.

The unique Chain Ferry at Normanton on Soar is open for summer 2018! Bring the family and enjoy a walk or a bike ride in the beau ful countryside along the River Soar. There are many footpaths in the area and you are sure to see an abundance of flora and fauna along your route as well as livestock and, of course, all the river ac vity including birds, fish and boaters during a pleasant stroll along the river. The original river crossing has been in existence at this spot since 1771. The ferry provides a link from the No nghamshire village across the River Soar to Leicestershire providing easy walking access across fields to Hathern, Zouch and Loughborough. The ancient crossing was given a faceli by the Normanton Parish council in early 2017 and now incorporates a ferry hut, cover and veranda. The Plough Inn at Normanton is a handy stop off point during your journey for refreshments and the Community Shop in Normanton (just opposite the church) serves drinks and snacks un l 1pm on a
Saturday. Other local hostelries you might include on your route include; The Anchor at Hathern, The Rose and Crown at Zouch and The O er at Kegworth.
