Think Lucky and you’ll be Lucky... In the early days of Bri sh network television, in the late 1950s and early 60s, there was a regular 5 minute astrology slot a er the early evening news on ATV. This was wri en and presented by Evadne Price and her signing off phrase was the tle of this month’s editor’s le er... Ms Price, it would seem, prac ced what she preached: she was a successful actress, a novelist with more than thirty published works, a columnist in the women’s magazine of the day for more than 25 years and she wrote more than a dozen plays for stage, screen and TV. She also lived un l she was 96 years old. I (Steve) remember her catch phrase as if it were stamped into my psyche. Yes, I am that old! Throughout my life I have always seen the glass as half full and looked on the bright side by default. Why else would anyone start a business like Soar Valley Life in the middle of a recession? Lately, for the past 9 months actually, I have been helping a friend write his memoirs. He was born into a Chris an Scien st family and is an advocate of their teachings. He explained to me the basic tenet of Chris an Science is simply the power of posi ve thought, mind over ma er, especially where health is concerned. We went to his 80th birthday party last week and are looking forward to his 90th. And only the other day I saw a twenty minute video of a presenta on by the Nobel prize‐winning biologist Elizabeth Blackburn about what makes our bodies age ... our skin wrinkle, our hair turn white, our immune systems weaken. She shares a Nobel Prize for her work finding out the answer, with the discovery of telomerase: an enzyme that replenishes the caps at the end of chromosomes, which break down when cells divide. That video is on our Facebook page if you would like to learn more, including how we might have more control over aging , accelera ng the process through stress and nega ve thinking and slowing down our aging by thinking posi vely. So, there you have it: Think lucky and you’ll be lucky ‐ and get old!

Adding Colour to your Winter Garden Many people think of winter as being a quiet me in the garden. This doesn’t have to be the case, you can inject lots of colour in your garden by using plants with brightly coloured stems, interes ng barks, winter flowers and berries to create spectacular

displays that cheer even the coldest, darkest days. Some of the Dogwoods have spectacular stems; one of my favourites is Cornus ‘Anny’s Winter Orange’.

Evergreen sedges are great for colour in winter and Carex ‘Evergold’ is a super variety to look out for. My favourite winter flowering shrub is Lonicera ‘Winter Beauty’, its clusters of tubular white flowers cling to the bare branches and fill the air with delicious citrusy fragrance. If you would like help injec ng winter interest into your garden why not book a consulta on. Claire Jones

Gardener’s Resolve… Happy New Year! Now that 2018 is here, what are your garden resolu ons for the year ahead? Here are my sugges ons… Recycle pots Save all the pots and trays you get when buying plants and rinse them out to use next me you need one. Store the pots away from sunlight to prevent the plas c disintegra ng. Cover it up! Make a resolu on to dry off and cover up garden furniture once the summer is over, to protect it from rain, cold, ice or even fungi! Buy furniture covers or, be er s ll, store the furniture in a shed or garage if you have one. Stored properly, it will last much longer. Grow your own Aim to grow more of your own fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs. This could be buying a couple of tomato plants for the first me, or crea ng a small herb planter, or it could be larger scale and more complex plans if you’re already big on growyourown. Don’t forget that there’s a great choice of UKgrown vegetable plants plus my weekly advice and ps emails at www.pippagreenwood.com/growyourown. Compost more Once you get in the swing of it, compos ng becomes second nature. Make sure you include kitchen waste such as vegetable peelings, apple cores. The amount of extra compost you’ll generate will be well worthwhile. Many local councils offer a good deal on basic plas c composters.

Use that space! If you have a cold frame, porch, conservatory or greenhouse, put it to use! Any sort of protected growing area has the ability to increase what you can grow and when you can grow it. So raise your own summer flowers in it, force some bulbs in it in the winter or make offseason sowings of salad crops… make it work, but whatever you do, don’t use it as the family rubbish dump! Mulch more Make use of any organic ma er that is bulky – mulch with it. Whether it is wellro ed manure, garden compost, the used compost from a seasonal bedding display or growing bag, or leaf mould, make it into mulch! Applied a couple of inches or more deep over the soil surface, a mulch like this will improve the

Nicky Morgan MP I’m sure, like me, you start each New Year with a few wellinten oned resolu ons which get harder to keep as the months (or days or weeks!) go by. 2017 was a difficult year in many ways, not helped by some divisive poli cal issues and figures. My hope for 2018 is that the UK Government is able to make significant progress with our EU trade nego a ons but also to have me to focus on some of our more pressing domes c issues.

Two of my priori es, in terms of policy, are to con nue the focus on good mental health care for adults and young people and to support everyone to have be er mental wellbeing. We also need to do more to tackle our social care system. Last year I arranged a ‘Later Life’ event to address some of the queries which cons tuents were raising with me about finding the right care package for older family members. This is a conversa on which we all need to have as we all live longer and plan ahead. Locally, I want to con nue to bridge the gap between the worlds of educa on and work, to support local businesses in crea ng more jobs, to get more investment in our East Midlands infrastructure and to make progress with local casework such as the calls for tougher ac on when dogs a ack other dogs. 2018 is also the year in which we are able to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first woman to be elected to the House of Commons. We s ll have a long way to go to get 50:50 representa on in the Commons. The Vote 100 events in Parliament and across the country will be a way of marking this important occasion and I hope encourage more people to think about standing as an MP. Finally, congratula ons go to the founder of the Exaireo Trust in Loughborough, De e Wallington, who was awarded a Points of Light Award from the Prime Minister recently in recogni on of her excep onal community work in our town over many years. Many congratula ons De e – we are very proud of you!

What is Pilates? Pilates is o en in the news and gossip columns these days — hardly an ar cle is wri en without some celebrity or other, movie actors, Olympic and other top sports people, telling us how Pilates helps them do what they do. David Beckham and Ryan Giggs used Pilates to extend their playing careers. The All Blacks rugby and England cricket teams are both advocates. Debbie McGee of Strictly Come Dancing fame is a great advert for it too. For those sportspeople who use Pilates, it can be a life changer. It can be that for the rest of us too. But what exactly is it?

strength and reducing risk of injury. Each exercise becomes a thought process, making us aware of what we unconsciously do with our bodies, allowing us to develop the areas needing special a en on and acquire be er balance. Regular prac ce helps you move more freely and gracefully.

Pilates is an exercise programme invented for injured dancers a century ago by Joseph Pilates, based on 34 original movements. Joseph was the first in the west to promote a holis c approach to exercise — his philosophy was that our lifestyle is chiefly responsible for our body’s ills which are reflected in our posture and movement. Joseph was German, living in England just prior to the Great War so was classed as an “enemy alien” and held in internment camps on the Isle of Wight and Isle of Man, where he devised the technique to aid rehabilita on of injured soldiers. Pilates is s ll an ideal programme for rehab a er injury, just as it’s a great way to help you strengthen your core and in turn fine tune your golf swing. It’s just a great way to keep flexible and strong.

Current Jane Thomas Pilates Classes

So what does Pilates do? Pilates teaches you to hold your posture correctly. It helps balance the torso and trains core stability by building abdominal, pelvic and back strength. Many medical experts believe when the spine is in alignment and supported properly by strong abdominal muscles, the involuntary func ons of the body such as breathing, heartbeat, diges on and elimina on of waste plus psychological health are all improved. Correct breathing teaches you to protect the spine and helps increase energy.

You may have been recommended to start Pilates by a GP, physiotherapist or other health professional; or you might just be looking for a great way of keeping mobile and strong. Pilates with your local Pilates specialist — Jane Thomas Pilates — might just be worth a try.

What is Meibomian Gland Dysfunc on (MGD)? The normal tears of the eye are made up of three layers – an oily (lipid) layer, a watery (aqueous) layer, and a s cky (mucous) layer. MGD is when the glands that make the oily layer of the tears are not working properly and this allows the watery layer of the tears to dry out. Meibomian glands are inside the eyelids, and the openings are on the edge of the eyelids. The outer oily layer stops the watery layer of the tears from drying out. When the glands become blocked, the oily part of the tears cannot be released. This causes the watery tears to dry up more quickly which results in the eye becoming dry and can make it feel sore. It is not usually a serious condi on, but can cause discomfort and some mes blurry vision. If it is not treated, the glands may stop working permanently. MGD can cause dry eye. It is common to have a combina on of MGD, dry eye and blephari s.

Risk factors MGD is a common condi on and can affect anyone. However, it is more likely to happen a er the age of 50, if you have diabetes or oily skin condi ons and it is also more common in women. Symptoms The eyelids can become sore and swollen as the glands become blocked. As the eyes become dry, they can feel itchy or gri y, as if there’s something in the eye. The eyes may be red, and if they’re sore, may be watery, which can cause vision to become blurry. Treatment Treatment involves releasing the oily tears from the glands. You can use products known as ‘heat bags’ that are specifically designed for this condi on. At Inter Eyecare, we will be able to advise you on the best type of treatment available for you. Osteopaths are physical therapists, qualified to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal condi ons. As well as trea ng ‘the bit that hurts’ we look at the whole body to determine whether there is an underlying postural problem which causes a problem to happen or to recur. The tle ‘osteopath’ is protected by law and therefore only someone who has completed a degree in osteopathy (B.Ost) can call themselves an osteopath. We are regulated and must complete training every year. Osteopathy is safe and is recommended as an effec ve treatment for persistent lower back pain by the Na onal Ins tute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). As well as low back pain, I most commonly see pa ents with: Shoulder problems (frozen shoulder, rotator cuff tendinopathies) Neck problems (mobility problems, radiculopathy) Hip problems (bursi s, osteoarthri s). I also give advice about what pa ents can do to improve their general health and provide exercises to help between treatments.

I’m Not Sure I Did the Right Thing As I drove through town, it was si ng three cars behind me: an ANPR-equipped police car. I knew I had nothing to worry about as I had stuck to the speed limits, and my car and I were both road‐legal. So I just clocked it in my rear view mirror as another road user. Approaching the red lights I pulled up next to a driver who was cha ng away on their phone. Even though the car was sta onary, this is an offence that now carries 6 penalty points, a

£200 fine and, if incurred in the first two years of gaining your licence, a disqualifica on too. (I assume this caveat was added as the sta s cs show that those aged 18‐24 are three mes more likely to commit this offence.)

When the driver next to me glanced across, I mo oned behind me. Their startled look and dropping of the phone said it all. Whether the police saw them on the phone I don’t know as, at that point, the traffic moved off.

Yet, a survey by Kwik‐Fit revealed that an astonishing 43% of those ques oned s ll fail to realise this. More worryingly 17% of those surveyed admi ed to tex ng and 34% to taking calls when driving! It seems the message is slow to get through.

On reflec on I’m not sure I did the right thing ‐ was I a Good Samaritan? Or perhaps I shouldn’t have intervened, let the law take its course and a driver learn a hard lesson that using a mobile phone behind the wheel is illegal. You decide.

The Many Benefits of Honey Throughout history honey has been used to treat coughs, wounds, indiges on, skin infec ons, fa gue, flu’s, burns and more.... Honey contains flavonoids; an oxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. And recent research shows that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteri s due to its an bacterial and an fungal proper es. It also helps with coughs and throat irrita ons. Honey is an excellent sweetener; although it contains simple sugars, it is NOT the same as white sugar or ar ficial sweeteners. Its exact combina on of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels. Honey heals wounds and burns and external applica on of honey has been shown to be as effec ve as conven onal treatment with silver sulfadiazine. Honey is an excellent probio c. Some varie es of honey possess large amounts of friendly bacteria. This includes up to 6 species of lactobacilli and 4 species of bifidobacteria. These are just some of the many benefits of honey so why not try it! Paula Reed

Pi ed Keratolysis Pi ed Keratolysis is a superficial bacterial infec on, usually malodorous (smelly, like cat wee and very unpleasant), characterised by crateriform pi ng (li le holes like orange peel) on the bo om of the feet. It is commonly associated with sweaty feet and skin usually turns very white. And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes

Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook

Tom Receives a Proposi on (Part 1) The Old Paraffin Lamp: a dusty, gloomy boozer tucked away behind a derelict industrial estate. A scruffy hole frequented by crumpled, lonely old souls, desperately in need of a makeover. (I meant the pub, not the customers. Then again…) But how Nigel and I loved it. My old chum and I had frequented this hostelry for years and it was, I suppose, always going to be the perfect venue for the bombshell Nigel was about to drop. “Tom, I’ve got something to tell you. You know me and Val have been seeing each other for a while?” “Her exhusband isn’t going to punch you again, is he Nige?” “The thing is neither of us is ge ng any younger. And…well I’ve decided to pop the ques on.” Marriage? My heart sank. “Listen, Nige, old chum. Have a serious think about it. Is she really the girl for you?” “Too late, Tom. I proposed last week. And she accepted.” Immediately I slammed into reverse gear. “Well congratula ons! I was wondering when you’d make an honest woman of her. This really is the most marvellous news!” I said through gri ed teeth. Immediate thoughts of pool games postponed, quiz nights dipped out of all sorts of catastrophic, life changing events. But if the shock of this momentous news wasn’t enough, the bea fic smile that now played on Nigel’s lips heralded an even more horrendous revela on.

Page 46

“And of course I’m going to need a best man.” The watery look in his eyes indicated a request was imminent one from which there was no escape. All I could do was grimace and wait for the words to tumble from his mouth. “Tom, mate. Will you be my best man?” Well, what could I say? The poor man had been struck over the head by Cupid’s bow and was now lost to everything we both held so dear. And now I too was being sucked into the madness totally and u erly against my will. “Nige, it would be an absolute honour.” Managing to dodge an unwelcome man hug by extending my hand, we shook on it. And then it began. “Val wants to get married in a castle.” A pause as l slowly placed my pint pot down onto the table that had served us well for so many years. The fightback had started, and I was leading the charge. “Listen here Sir Lancelot, if you don’t watch it, by the end of this process, you’ll be friendless, potless and…” But it was pointless. Talking over me, he embarked upon a garrulous soliloquy espousing the wondrous benefits of ge ng hitched. Like no one had ever done it before. It was only when he moved onto table decora ons that I put a stop to it. “Nigel! Have you heard yourself? Table decora ons? What in the name of thunder are you babbling on about?” Nigel threw his nose in the direc on of the dartboard. “Val said you’d be like this.” Fearing I had overstepped the mark, I placed a conciliatory hand on his shoulder. “Look, mate, if

you want to talk to me about table decora ons, you go ahead.” Nigel’s shoulders sagged as, slowly, the pretence began to fade. Through pained eyes he said, “Val says I’ve got to find li le bo les to put jelly beans into.” S fling a smirk, in the least patronising manner possible I said, “Nige old chum, if we need to find you some jelly beans, then jelly beans we shall find.” But I knew my Old Pal, I could tell there was something else. My usual tac c was to sit quietly and wait. I wasn’t wrong. A er a pause Nigel said. “Tom, I’m going to have to give up our Monday nights.” Incensed, I said, “Why?” “Zumba classes.” My head fell into my hands. Now it was Nigel’s turn to comfort me. “Don’t worry Tom, it won’t be for ever. And of course, it’s your job to organise the stag.” Suddenly, things didn’t seem so terrible. “OK Nige, you go the bar and I’ll peel off the back of this beer mat. Now, pass me a pen this is going to take some organising!” To be con nued…

“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” Orson Welles

Dealing with Cat Flu – It’s Not Just a Winter Bug Cat flu is poten ally one of the most serious illnesses your cat can suffer and in some cases is life threatening. Ki ens in par cular are at high risk, so it’s important to vaccinate as soon as possible, usually at nine weeks and then on an annual basis. It’s not only a ‘winter bug’ as human flu tends to be – it can be transferred between cats at any me of the year. This is why, if your cat stays in a boarding ca ery, you should make sure it’s one that only accepts cats from owners with proof of vaccina on. What symptoms should you watch out for? Common symptoms of cat flu include: • Sneezing • Coughing • Runny nose • Dribbling • High temperature

Caring For an Older Dog When your dog ages, it begins to slow down and generally puts on weight. It may struggle with arthri s, making it difficult to move around with ease, par cularly during the colder months.

• General lethargy • Loss of appe te • Sore or par allyclosed eyes Helping your cat through this serious illness The vet may prescribe an bio cs if your cat has a secondary bacterial infec on, which is a common occurrence with cat flu. Apart from that, however, wiping the cat’s eyes and nose with a warm clean cloth soaked in salt water can help. Regularly washing their bedding, and making sure water bowls are cleaned several mes a day with hot water, also helps to prevent reinfec on once your cat begins to improve. Cats with flu o en lose their appe te, so having plenty of nice food to tempt them to eat is a good idea and also helps to build up their immune system a er they’ve recovered. h ps://www.bluecross.org.uk/petadvice/catflu h ps://www.petplan.co.uk/petplantogether/senior cat/cancatsgetcolds.asp become less ac ve, the requirement for protein reduces. If your dog doesn’t want to eat one large meal a day, you could try offering them two or three smaller meals – this might ease their diges on, and make them more comfortable at night. So what can you do to alleviate the symptoms of old age for your dog? Here are a few ideas that could put the spring back in their step. Glucosamine and chondroi n Glucosamine and chondroi n supplements can aid movement by protec ng your dog’s car lage, lubrica ng their joints, and easing the pain of arthri s. It may take a while to get into their system, so it needs to be taken regularly. Individual needs vary, however, so speak to your vet, as they’ll be able to tell you the recommended dosage for your pet. Check their diet A dog’s nutri onal needs change as they age, and you may find that as they

Even though they’re slowing down, it’s important to exercise regularly. This may mean having shorter, more frequent walks, rather than one long ou ng every day. Your pet will benefit from the fresh air and exercise, whatever the distance you walk. Caring for an older dog isn’t difficult. You just need to adjust the rou ne to account for their changing needs – much like us humans. www.petplan.co.uk/petinforma on/dog/ advice/arthri s/ www.willows.uk.net/generalprac ceservice/ looking a eryourpet/lookinga eryourdog/lookinga er yourseniordog www.yourdog.co.uk/DogHealthandCare/caringfor anolderdog.html www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/pets/ dogs/health/seniordogs

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Once in a Blue Moon

The month of January 2018 has two full moons, which means one of them is a “Blue Moon”. When you hear someone say "Once in a Blue Moon..." you know what they mean: Rare. Seldom. Maybe even absurd. A er all, when was the last me you saw the moon turn blue? Full moons are separated by approximately 29 days, while most months are 30 or 31 days long, so it is possible to fit two full moons in a single month. This happens every two and a half years, on average. January has already had one full moon on January 2nd. The next, on January 31st, is by defini on a Blue Moon. But will it really be blue? Probably not. The date of a full moon, all by itself, doesn't affect the moon's colour. The moon on January 31st will be pearly‐grey, as usual. Unless... there is a lunar eclipse; (Which there is!) then as it passes into the Earth’s shadow its colour fades and at totality could be blue, orange, or dark grey. The defini on of a Blue Moon used in this ar cle, "the second full moon in a calendar month” is a curious bit of modern folklore. How it emerged is a long story involving old almanacs, a mistake in Sky and Telescope magazine and the board game Trivial Pursuit! Apparently... About SOM: Simply Organised Money Simply Organised Money is owned and run by Helen Somaiya, an independent financial adviser based in Charnwood & Leicestershire. Helen has always worked to help people with their money. She went from working behind a post office counter at the age of 15 whilst s ll at school, helping people cash in their state pension, to these days helping them make sure that a state pension isn’t their only re rement income! Helen is commi ed to providing a secure financial future for her clients, helping them with estate planning, funeral costs and las ng powers of a orney. Helen has seen a lot of change since she started working for Alliance & Leicester Building Society at the age of 18. She’s seen 10%+ interest on savings accounts like TESSA’s, PEP's replaced with ISA’s and current accounts which included free life cover to the over 50’s. She was a savings adviser and mortgage adviser before taking exams in her own me (and with her own money) to qualify as a financial adviser.

Times changed drama cally in 2008 when the banking crisis hit. Interest rates fell to an all me low with the bank rate dropping to 0.5%. Overnight Santander bought the building society making it a bank. Bills soared and property prices crashed. Northern Rock went into Helen Somaiya of liquida on and Simply Organised Money branches closed at short no ce. Folk queued to withdraw their savings, worried that the banks weren’t safe. At that me, with a young son to look a er, Helen wasn’t sure that she would have a job to return to a er maternity leave. Luckily she was able to go back to work but was then faced with retraining in order to keep her job. Her son was only 18 months old and she certainly hadn’t expected to be taking more exams, but financial regula on had been completely overhauled. Financial advisers had 2 years to gain addi onal qualifica ons or lose their jobs. They were tough mes but Helen worked part me whilst studying and passed the exams to keep her authorisa on to work as an adviser. Helen saw many colleagues fail. The number of financial advisers in the UK fell from 1100 to around 400 and bank branches began to close. In 2013 many banks and building socie es were fined for incorrect procedures. Helen and her colleagues were retrained but then suddenly made redundant. A er a lot of thought, Helen decided to become an independent financial adviser. She now works for a range of clients, from people she worked with in her banking days to lots of new ones! Helen prides herself in offering a ‘cradle to grave’ service. Her advice enables people to plan for their own future as well as providing for their families when they’re no longer around.

That was our dream.” Paul, 35, is originally from Sileby and the Ward family owned a café 50 years ago in the village called Zulus so they were keen to keep the tradi on going. Young Driver Going Places One of our young distributors, who delivers magazines in and around the Dishley area of Loughborough, emailed a couple of weeks ago asking if we’d be interested in telling his story for our readers. This year, on 1st December, 17 year old Dan Seager was pipped at the post as the Motor Sports Academy Young Driver of the Year. He came 4th out of 41 in the na onwide championship this year and despite working on a really low budget and having a few mechanical failures he s ll got a top 5 overall. Next year? Who knows… The Young Driver of the year compe on was a four way shoot out, and the accolade is awarded each year to a member of the MSA Academy’s AASE programme, a threeyear course delivered in conjunc on with Loughborough College which Dan is a ending un l July 2019. The shootout took place at the IZone Driver Performance Centre at Silverstone Racing complex. It consisted of seven sessions including physical and mental assessments, a simula on evalua on and interviews with the judging panel. A few years ago Dan’s Dad took him kart racing for the first me. Dan was hooked from then on, so much so he made up his mind that he wanted to become a professional racing driver. I bet his Dad gulped and took a very deep breath when Dan told him that. The road of that ambi on must be li ered with depleted bank accounts and sha ered dreams. History shows that champion drivers, and most of the rest of the field, are from well off families with pots of money to

Dan’s family have backed him all the way to the brink of success being in the final four of this year’s Young Driver of The Year. Next year’s budget for Dan to race at the level he is at will be in the region of fi een to twenty thousand pounds, and that really only allows him to hold his ground. Many of his contemporaries spend many mes that on be er and faster vehicles. Even so, Dan really is holding his own at a very pres ge level, but acknowledges the need now for professional sponsorship. Tracing Your Family History It’s useful to understand the difference between Register Offices and Record Offices, both useful to the family researcher. Register Offices hold civil registration records from July 1837 to the present. There’s one for each registration district. From them you can buy copies of birth, marriage and death certificates. Records from all register offices are also held at the General Register Office (GRO) from where certificates can also be obtained. Before making an application, check to which district the parish or town you’re interested in belongs, as some districts straddle counties. Information about record Offices next time! The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE114 LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.
