Our New Home? Towards the end of last year, as the Mountsorrel Memorial Centre (pictured above) was about to open its doors, an estate agent’s sign was displayed on the protec ve barriers on the car park boundary. The sign announced that 3 new retail units were to become available in 2018. I (Steve) enquired as to price and was immediately put off by the lease cost and that they were only a shell and would need fi ng out from floor to ceiling and wall to wall. I forgot about it then un l I went in one day in March to have a word with Chris Reeves, who I knew had been appointed manager of the centre. I knew Chris from his days at The Waterside with Sue Roberts. I wanted Chris to provide the PA system for Bill Ford’s Book Launch that I was organising to take place at Rothley Court on May 1st. Chris told me that the lease price on the units had been reduced and that the café had been let to Peppercorns. He showed me inside one of the units, and my imagina on kicked into gear as I really could see us moving in there and developing the retail, public community and contact side of Soar Valley Life. I got in touch again with the estate agent men oning that I believed we could help to promote the centre and its ac vi es and that our business would fit very well into one of the units. I then met with Steve Heywood from Mountsorrel Council who manage the centre on behalf of the Mountsorrel War Memorial Trust. There followed a good deal of correspondence between us culmina ng in a dra lease being sent to us. There are 25 pages in the document and more than 200 clauses. We needed a solicitor to interpret it. We now had to invest some serious money to move forward. Mary and I both realised that this was a very big decision for our li le business. We deliberated for a fortnight ‐ we knew that this was our Rubicon ‐ our point of no return… We have crossed that metaphorical river now and, God willing, our next edi on will be published from our new home, the other side of our li le river valley. Will we reign as long as Caesar did I wonder?

Protec ng Your Family’s Inheritance Just Great Music!
Most people hope that their estate will pass on to their children and grandchildren eventually. But this will not happen for many, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect their assets from being taken towards the end of their life to pay for care home fees. The solu on to help protect your estate is a Will incorpora ng a Property Protec on Trust (PPT). A testamentary PPT can only be executed whilst both partners remain alive. Upon death of the first partner, their Will specifies that their share of the property is placed into trust and names the ul mate beneficiary of this share,
normally the children and grandchildren of the deceased. The surviving partner, under the terms of the Trust, has the unequivocal right to remain living in the property for the rest of their life. On the death of the second partner the Trust comes to an end and the property passes to the beneficiaries. As the surviving partner does not own the deceased's share of the property it is fully protected for the beneficiaries, so if the surviving partner requires care, or even remarries, this share of the children's inheritance is protected. This last point can be of par cular interest to couples who have come together and
have children from different partners. A PPT can help each person in a rela onship ensure that their children inherit their share of the property, while giving their surviving partner the ability to live in the property for the rest of their life. If the surviving partner wants to move to another property they can s ll sell the property and the proceeds be used to purchase a new property; the terms of the Trust remain over the new property. Westminster Law will assess your current circumstances and arrange the trust that will provide the best protec on for you, your family and your assets.

The Lily Beetle Lilies are one of my favourite flowers but sadly I have wri en them off as a plant for my borders and restrict them to pots in the garden, all because of the lily beetle. These along with their larvae eat the leaves of lilies and fri llaries. They will ruin the plants appearance if le unchecked weakening the plant resul ng in undersized bulbs, affec ng the flowering poten al for the following year. Adult beetles are around 8mm long and have bright red wing cases and thorax, with black head and legs. Larvae are usually hidden by their own excrement ‐ I know, rather unpleasant! The best way to control them is to keep a lookout from
late March, regularly checking the plants so that adult larvae, beetles and eggs can be removed by hand. I would definitely recommend wearing gloves. Claire Jones

Last month I was finally able to secure a short debate in the House of Commons Westminster Hall chamber on the involvement of local communi es in the planning system. The first issue, about local councils having a 5 year land supply, is perhaps of most relevance to many of our villages. Without being able to demonstrate this local councils have real difficulty in turning down applica ons for developments. However, local councils such as Charnwood, which have granted planning permission for 10 years’ worth of housing, have no control over the speed at which those houses are built and this lack of building can then undermine their case for having a 5 year land supply. The Minister took the points on board and we also had a discussion about the importance of neighbourhood plans. To read the debates please look at the link on my website – nickymorgan.com

Essen al Scent No ma er how good your garden may look, without scent it is missing a vital ingredient – and you don’t have to sacrifice colour and texture when using perfumed plants, as many heavily-scented flowers are also really goodlooking. Perfume plays a role in plant evolu on and is o en used to a ract a en on to the flower and thus en ce a suitable pollinator. The insect enjoys the flower’s nectar and pollinates it in the process, increasing the chances of it producing a new genera on. Many plants produce an alluring perfume during the evening or night‐ me, and at this me of day moths can be useful pollinators, especially during the summer months. So although a plant like the sweetly‐perfumed night‐scented stock may not have flamboyant flowers, it will be successfully pollinated. Weather condi ons can alter the level of perfume that reaches us, and in a wind‐swept spot the perfume can literally be blown away. Unusually low temperatures can also cause scent levels to drop. So bear this in mind when choosing where to put your perfumed plants. Smaller or more subtly‐scented plants, such as some of the polyanthus or the miniature iris, should be planted in raised areas or in pots – otherwise their perfume can easily pass you by! A small pergola makes a great home for perfumed climbers, and what could be lovelier than to wander from one part of the garden to another via a tunnel of perfume? Perfumed roses such as the repeat

flowering climbers ‘Ena Harkness’ (red) or ‘New Dawn’ (pale, dusky pink) or ‘Zephirine Drouhin’ (brightest pink) have flexible stems and are ideal. Place smaller perfumed plants such as ‘Nemesia Fragrant Cloud’ or lavenders into window boxes or wall baskets, and enjoy their wonderful perfume in your house as it wa s in through windows le ajar. For si ng out a er sundown, plant flowers that are at their best in the evening. For a warm summer’s evening the small creamy‐white flowers of night‐ scented stock take some bea ng, or try the night‐ perfumed nico anas or tobacco plants such as Nico ana sylvestris. How about some hyacinths or the Heliotrope or cherry pie, with its flowers in white or shades of purple which will produce perfume throughout the summer? Disguise a less‐than‐a rac ve house or garage wall with wall shrubs; in a sunny spot the blueflowered Ceaonothus produces a dis nctly honey‐perfumed scent, or on well‐drained soil the pineapple broom Cy ssus batanderei looks and smells sensa onal, with its lovely silverycoloured foliage, bright yellow flowers and pineapple‐scented blooms. Roast Salmon
Serves 4 Ready in 20 minutes
with Tomato & Asparagus Tagliatelle This light summery supper is on the table in less than 30 minutes – perfect when you don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen. If you prefer, replace the salmon with pieces of cod loin or smoked haddock fillets.
1
Preheat the oven to 200°C, fan 180°C, gas mark 6. Place the salmon on a lightly oiled shallow roas ng n. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and drizzle over the lemon juice.
2
Place the cherry tomatoes in a bowl and add half of the oil and the garlic. Toss gently to coat. Place in the roas ng n around the salmon. Roast for 12‐15 minutes un l the salmon is just cooked through and the tomatoes have so ened.
3
Meanwhile cook the tagliatelle in a pan of lightly salted boiling water for 8‐10 minutes or according to the packet instruc ons. Add the asparagus ps to the pan for the final 3 minutes. Drain well. Return to the pan.
4
5
Tip
Add the roast cherry tomatoes and the remaining olive oil to the tagliatelle and asparagus and toss together. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Divide the pasta between four warmed plates. Top with the roasted salmon, sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve with the lemon wedges.
Ingredients: • 4 x 175g pieces salmon fillet • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 tbsp lemon juice • 2 tbsp olive oil • 250g cherry tomatoes • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced • 250g tagliatelle (see Tip) • 150g asparagus ps
You can use any long thin pasta for this dish; spaghe or linguine would work just as well. If you use fresh pasta the cooking me will be reduced – just follow the instruc ons on the pack.

Pets and Divorce Just Great Music!
Perhaps not surprisingly in a na on of animal lovers one ques on that we are asked frequently by clients is who will keep the family pet, usually dog or cat, on divorce or separa on? This o en sensi ve and emo onal issue can lead to long and expensive disputes between separa ng couples. In divorce proceedings in England and Wales the law treats the pet as an item of personal property, such as furniture or jewellery. The courts will expect couples to resolve the issues between themselves or even with help from an accredited mediator before asking the court to decide what will happen to the pet.
Evidence of whose money purchased the pet and who maintained it financially may be taken into account or evidence of a gi to prove legal ownership. Arguments which show a party’s ability to take day to day care of the pet may be persuasive but ownership o en prevails. The costs of maintaining a pet can also be considered in divorce proceedings par cularly with larger more expensive pets such as horses. The Family Court has powers to make orders in respect of who children will live with and when they will spend me with the other parent. No similar power exists in respect of pets. However par es can agree a shared care arrangement if they consider it
prac cal and will not lead to distress or harm to the animal. To avoid disputes upon separa on, couples purchasing or adop ng a pet can make provision for what will happen in the event of separa on by including provision for pets in a pre or post nup al agreement or a cohabita on agreement. Blood Spots These bright red blemishes, also known as Cherry Angioma or Campbell de Morgan Spots, do not blanch when pressure is applied. They are caused by leaking blood vessels under the skin and while most are flat to the surface of the skin, larger ones can be domed and can even feel quite fibrous to the touch. More common in men than women and tending to increase with age, they can occur anywhere on the body though
they are most commonly found on the torso. Younger people can also have them and teenagers may find them par cularly embarrassing as they can be very obvious on younger, fairer skin. Small ones can be amazingly easy to remove, using advanced electrolysis, as a single leaking capillary can be treated in a ma er of seconds. Larger ones can take a li le longer but the blemish is normally completely removed with a single treatment. Large Campbell de Morgan Spots

Sight Test Explained Just Great Music!
Every sight test is tailor-made depending on your needs. As well as an eye health check, a sight test might detect signs of underlying general health condi ons, such as diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Everyone should have a sight test every two years, or more o en if your optometrist recommends it. Sight test Your optometrist will check what you can see – close up and in the distance – usually using special charts of symbols or le ers. This may be with or without your glasses. They will then work out whether you need glasses or a change of prescrip on with a series of tests using different lenses. This will also involve simple ques ons and you should try to answer these as accurately and honestly as you can. There are no right or wrong answers, so don’t worry. For those who are unable to answer these ques ons, there are other ways of working out a glasses prescrip on. This is par cularly useful for young children or those with learning difficul es or special educa onal
needs. Your optometrist will also carry out tests on your eye muscles to check how your eyes are working together. Eye health check Your optometrist will examine the inside and outside of your eyes. They will tell you if there are any signs of disease or injury. The equipment used for this will vary from prac ce to prac ce. Occasionally your optometrist will need to put drops in your eyes to get a be er view of the back of your eye but they will explain this before doing so. Some mes it may be necessary to check your peripheral (or side) vision using a special instrument. This tests for certain condi ons of the eyes or the visual parts of your brain. You may also need an eye‐ pressure test, which is one of the procedures used to detect glaucoma. If there is something which needs further medical checks, the optometrist will write to your doctor or the eye hospital for you. Vinesh Patel – Inter Eyecare, Rothley

Risk factors are a history of trauma to the knee or other joint disease – such as osteoarthri s/ rheumatoid arthri s. Symptoms are a no ceable swelling at the back of the knee and associated s ffness and pain especially when the knee is outstretched. Some cysts resolve without interven on and most respond to treatment of associated disorders of the knee joint. A glucocor coid injec on is usually effec ve in conjunc on with treatment of the underlying joint problem. Osteopathic treatment can help to improve knee func on and improve flexibility of the overlying muscles as well as advising on posture and strengthening exercises to control hyperextension of the knee. A LIFE ON FIRE A Life on Fire tells the story of one of Leicestershire’s best loved and well known businessmen – former president, chairman and managing director of the Great Central Railway, and Chairman of Ford & Slater plc of Narborough Road Leicester tells his story. His remarkable memory takes us back to when the Luftwaffe flew over Leicester to blitz Coventry in 1940 and at just 3 years of age an old mechanic told him that one day he would be “An Engine Engineer!” We travel the world with him, to Africa, America, Australia, Arabia and the Isle of Man as he guides global Corporations, Aero Clubs, inland marine enterprises, the GCR and many more from the 1960s through to the the present day.

Short Story By Jackie Brewster Just Great Music!
Dolphin Watching “It’s a tricky walk down.” Sheila grabbed a clump of seagrass to steady herself. “I feel like a mountain goat.” She had picked up a leaflet for a dolphin‐watching boat trip that set off from the harbour, but Royce had turned his nose up. “If we sit on a beach that boat will sail past,” he’d said, parking on the coastal road’s narrow verge. “Whatever they see on the boat, we can see from the shore.” “You’re such a cheap‐skate, Royce,” Sheila had snapped crossly. “We’re on holiday for goodness sake!” “I’m not being cheap,” Royce had replied sulkily. “I just thought you’d enjoy it more on a beach.” “I’m sorry.” Sheila backed down when she saw she’d offended him. “It’s a lovely idea.” “Quite right,” Royce had shrugged, “I’m just trying to give you a nice holiday.” With the air not completely cleared between them, Sheila had avoided the slightest complaint while stumbling behind Royce down the two miles of ne le‐lined track to the beach. She never said a word when she got a splinter in her bo om from a six‐bar gate, and cheerfully skidded on lose shale down the sheer cliff face. A er an hour of scraped knees and ne le s ngs they finally stood on the shoreline. The waves shimmered in the hot sun, and the sand of the li le cove was the colour of clo ed cream. It was also covered in beach towels.
Page 48
“I’m amazed it’s so popular,” Sheila observed. “It’s so dicey to get to.” “Everyone’s had the same idea,” said Royce. “No point was ng money on pointless boat trips.” They found a rock to perch upon, where they could see the sea over rows of colourful windbreaks. “I can’t believe all these families have made it down here,” Sheila marvelled, “and there are no facili es for miles.” “Yes, it’s very secluded,” Royce said. “Look, they’ve got a double buggy down here.” Sheila was staggered. “And those teenagers have brought body boards.” “Incredible,” Royce agreed, peering through his binoculars. Sheila looked around. There were families building sandcastles, some ea ng ice lollies, some leaning over rock pools with crab lines. “Where’s everyone ge ng their lollies from?” “Must have brought them with them,” Royce said, feigning interest in a seagull.
A girl walked by licking a cornet. “Excuse me!” Sheila called, “Where did you get that from?” “The ice cream van in the car park” the girl said. “What car park?” The girl looked at Sheila as though she’d landed from Mars. “Up there,” she pointed, “it’s a two minute walk.” “Why did we park miles away, Royce?” Sheila turned to her husband. “There’s a car park.” “Look, here comes the dolphin‐ spo ng boat.” Royce said, pretending not to hear. “How much does the car park cost?” Sheila asked. “It’s quite dear,” Royce said. “How much?” Sheila insisted. “Three pounds,” Royce mumbled. “Well, you know what you can do?” Sheila said. “You can go back up the cliff and bring the car round.” She took the binoculars out of his hand. “And then get me an icecream. I’ll let you know if I see any dolphins.”
“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” Orson Welles

If you Google Canada ETA you could land up on a site that will charge you substan ally more than the current $7.00CAD. Be warned ‐ several quite intelligent people have been duped into paying over $50.00CAD! You will need your flight details, the address of your first night’s accommoda on in Canada and a credit or debit card to pay the $7.00. The ques ons are quite easy but be warned during the process you change from being a UK ci zen to Bri sh to English! The authoriza on is emailed back to you and can be as quick as instantly to up to 48 hours. We advise that you print 2 or 3 copies. Take one to the airport just in case there is an issue. Store the other safely at home as the ETA is valid for 5 years or the length of the passport if it expires earlier.
Are there areas of Africa I can travel to without taking malaria tablets? Africa is a massive con nent and covers everything from swamps to deserts. The World Health Organiza on provides an excellent map and your own doctor has access to specific and more detailed informa on. We are happy to provide broad informa on on any area within Africa. Certainly within South Africa there are some spectacular areas such as the Garden Route that do not require malaria tablets. Please remember any advice we give is advisory and you always need to check with your doctor. Your own personal health profile may mean you have to take added precau ons when you travel. Advice on Yellow Fever There are several areas in the world where Yellow Fever is s ll ac ve. They include places like Tanzania and most of South America for instance, where you need an ac ve yellow fever cer ficate. The new vaccine given in the last 12 months is good for life but if you had the vaccine over 2 years ago the cer ficate is only good for 10 years. Please also be aware that the most doctors will not give the vaccine to pa ents over 65 years of age due to some poten al complica ons. If you are under that age we would encourage you to have the injec on now to keep your op ons open. Talk to your doctor to get it arranged Remember to send your ques ons to info@soarvalleylife.co.uk by Friday 17th August to be in me for the next edi on of Soar Valley Life.
You can always ring us on 01509 618800 if you have a ques on.

Keeping your dog safe in the water this summer
Swimming is a fun ac vity for your dog, and one which can be extremely beneficial for their overall health. In the heat of summer, however, it comes into its own by cooling them down and helping them to avoid the risk of heat stroke to which dogs are prone.
Page 52
So what should you do to make sure they’re safe in the water, and that swimming is fun rather than frightening? • Stay in the shallows at first Le ng your dog play in shallow waters helps them to acclima se and gain confidence if they’re rela vely new to swimming. • Be aware of undercurrents It’s easy for your dog to be swept out further than you’d like if there are dal undercurrents on your stretch of beach. Fast‐flowing rivers and streams also pose a danger in this respect, even if your dog’s a strong swimmer. • Provide fresh water to drink Drinking lake or river water can result in an upset stomach due
to the bacteria and parasites that are o en present, so it’s a good idea to take some fresh drinking water with you. • Don’t let them get too red Swimming is ring for your dog, so watch out for signs that they’re flagging. They may start to panic and flounder in the water, especially if they’re novice swimmers. It’s possible to buy life jackets for dogs, which give them confidence in the water if they’re a li le unsure. www.passpawt.com/safety- psforswimming-with-your-dog/ www.pe inder.com/dogs/livingwith-yourdog/summer- me-funon-the-water-keepyour-dogs-safe/ www.vetstreet.com/dr-martybecker/keepyour-dog-safe-in-thewater-this-summer

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Asteroid falls to Earth over Russia
Special Events Calendar for July 2018: 6 July: On our ellip cal orbit around our Sun we reach our furthest distance from our star at 152,000,000 kilometres. 9 July: Venus just passes the star Regulus and forms a stunning tableau on 15 July with the moon and the star. Jupiter is glorious in the southern sky shining at mag ‐ 2.2 and sets about 1 am with Saturn nestling among the stars in Sagi arius at mag ‐ 0.1. Mars at ‐ 2.7 is seen in Capricorn and rises at 11.15 pm at the beginning of July and ever earlier at the month’s end at 9.15 pm.
Dawnlight meteor over Russia on Summer Sols ce morning A bright shoo ng star was seen in near daylight on June 21, 2018, over several Russian ci es, including Lipetsk, which is located about 250 miles southeast of Moscow. (And it was nothing to do with the Football World Cup!) The fast fireball produced an amazing smoke trail that remained visible for several minutes a erwards. NASA’s fireball records indicate the event occurred on June 21 at 01:16:20 UTC. Which would have been just a er a quarter past four in the morning in Lipetsk. Sensors detected that the space rock produced an explosion equivalent to 2.8 kilotons. (About a fi h the size of the H Bomb that destroyed Hiroshima in 1945) That explosion size corresponds to the disintegra on of a small asteroid of about 13 feet (4 meters) in diameter weighing between a hundred and two hundred tons ‐ about the size of The Flying Scotsman Steam Engine fully loaded with water and coal! But please don’t let this alarm you; it would take an object many mes this size for any damage to life or life threatening debris to fall to ground. What didn’t vaporise in the atmosphere would fall to Earth as dust. Apparent brightness of some objects in the magnitude system
27th July: Total lunar eclipse at 9.21 pm. Calendar for August 2018: 11th August: At 10.58 am there’s a par al solar eclipse. August 12/13 Perseid meteor shower maximum. Venus at mag ‐ 4.3 sinks into the western twilight and sets at 10.15 pm early month and 10/14th August she looks like a sparkling adornment to the crescent moon, but by the month’s end she sets at a quarter to nine and partners the star Spica on 31st August. Jupiter at mag ‐ 2.0 although fainter than Venus is prominent in the dark south western sky se ng around 11pm mid month. Mars blazes in at the start of August in the southern skies at mag ‐ 2.7 se ng around 3 am.

Before you start brainstorming, there are a few general rules of thumb to keep in mind: • Choose a name that’s simple and memorable • Ensure that it’s easy to spell • Keep it unique The obvious choice is your company name, but if that’s already been registered, also consider a combina on of your business sector and loca on or your name and a keyword. For example, widgetsleicester.co.uk or janesflowers.com. Consider different name extensions. Popular endings include .co.uk, .com, .net and .info, but there are many others. One final thought – having your own name also allows you to use it for all of your email, so you can appear more professional on your le erheads and any signwri ng on vans. If you would like to discuss how we can help you secure the right name for your website, please get in touch. Jon Langford – Charnwood Web Design

A Family of Schools for all the Family Just Great Music!
In the heart of Loughborough sits a group of independent schools unlike any other in the area. Loughborough Schools Founda on is quite excep onal due to the fact that hidden behind its tree-lined and manicured sports field façade sits a close-knit family of five schools. Star ng from just 6 weeks old up to the age of 4 is The Nursery, open 51 weeks of the year. Moving on, there is Fairfield Prep School, for children aged 3 to 11, where the new building offers state‐of‐the‐art facili es in light and spacious classrooms each with a covered outdoor play space.
and siblings can enjoy their whole educa onal journey in one beau ful, happy and richly mul ‐ cultural family campus.
From there it is literally just across the way to historic Loughborough Grammar School for Boys, which was established in 1495, the exemplary Loughborough High School for Girls and also, Loughborough Amherst School, a Catholic school that welcomes ‘pupils of all faiths or none’. The Amherst School currently has a co‐ed prep school and a high achieving school for girls aged 11 to 18 and from September 2019 the senior school will also become fully co‐educa onal.
Although each is dis nct, the schools share a tangible kindred spirit and educa onal ethos. From the very youngest entrant to confident teenagers studying A levels, Loughborough Schools Founda on encourages all pupils to be well‐mannered, happy and self‐reliant individuals in addi on to presen ng schooling opportuni es for pupils to become the best version of themselves.
Collec vely the schools offer parents across the East Midlands a unique opportunity for those choosing an independent educa on for their children. From the age of just 6 weeks old all the way to exam success at 18, a child

Are you a Procras nator? Henry Miller said, “Life, as it is called, is for most of us one long postponement.” So why do we put things off and procras nate? There are many reasons, most of which are held in our subconscious. Each individual is different but some common reasons are: Fear of failure, fear of being good at something and standing out, fear of isola on or fear of star ng something which could be stressful or may result in work overload. Not all procras na on is nega ve but psychological studies have shown that in the majority of cases people who procras nate tend to have an increased level of depression, anxiety and lower self‐esteem. In the workplace procras na on is o en seen as laziness or unproduc ve behavior which can have devasta ng consequences. So what do we need to do to overcome it? There are several techniques, all of which help to change the way we think by tapping in to the subconscious. One very effec ve way is EFT which gets to the root of the problem and enables one to let go of nega ve emo ons a ached to it. These can then be replaced with posi ve emo ons to enhance and improve performance. EFT is just one of the therapies on offer at Reed Wellbeing. Paula Reed

Tracing Your Family History Electoral rolls can be useful in tracing when your ancestors changed addresses, giving you a year during which the move took place, perhaps due to a job change. It helps to have a street name to start because people are listed by street. Without a street name, trawling can be time-consuming but possible in most towns. Voters in villages are usually just listed. Before 1918, owning property gave the right to vote so finding an ancestor hints at their wealth, leading you to check Land Tax records, to be described next time. After 1918, you can also see where female ancestors became able to vote. Remember that no electoral rolls were compiled during either world wars but the 1918-19 rolls record those men entitled to vote but who are absent on military service with the letters ‘MN’ by their name, maybe useful confirmation for your research. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.
