Mary and I with our trophy for the “Best Community News Publica on—Leicestershire” Awarded by SME News UK Division of AI Global Media

Gang a agley We laid a few plans in 2018 and put resources in place to see them through... Around this me last year we started to make new plans for Soar Valley Life and hoped our humble li le business would be in its own wee bothy by this New Year and all would be running smoothly by Burns night 2019 in a new office and away we’d go! But, as you may have read over the last few months, it was not to be. Instead, pu ng the reasons aside, we have decided to invest those resources in crea ng a bit more space at home and to carry on as we had started. A er all, we feel we have done pre y good up to now, making do here and amends there. So, in the autumn of 2018 we began searching for tradesmen who could create what we had in mind. What a learning curve that has proven to be! We have to move drains and manholes, seek planning permission and permission from Severn Trent and so on and so forth. I wouldn’t mind but we’re only trying to create another 150 square feet off the kitchen. Anyway, the work is due to commence some me around Burns Night, so it’s likely we’ll be having our neaps, ta es and haggis in some disarray—but it will all be worth it in the end. In the middle of all these plans last August, we were informed that we had won the 2018 award as the Best Community News Publica on in Leicestershire! So, although we are staying put premises wise, we are moving forward with our schemes to upgrade our branding; taking me to make sure nothing gangs a agley! Read more about our new plans on page 62.

“And the autumn leaves were turning to the colour of her hair” Noel Harrison – The Windmills of Your Mind

The Lenten Rose One of my favourite flowers at this me of year is the Hellebore orientalis, some mes referred to as the Lenten rose. A dream for the winter garden this evergreen perennial is na ve to the woodlands of Greece and Turkey, preferring a moist but well drained soil in par al shade. I always remove all of the old foliage in January or February as it

shows off the emerging flowers to best effect. It also helps to get rid of foliar diseases such as Hellebore leaf spot. I like to grow Snowdrops with my Hellebores and removing the leaves also means you can see them more clearly. A er flowering the plants will produce a new crown of fresh leaves which are great for ground cover in the summer. Claire Jones

Gardener’s Resolve… If you want to grow so fruit then I recommend raspberries for value, reliability and ease of growth. The canes, best bought bare root, are available now, so here are my top ps for plan ng and growing great raspberries. Raspberries like moisture, without being soggy around the roots. Improve light and sandy soil by digging in plenty of bulky organic ma er such as compost or wellro ed manure before plan ng. Summerfrui ng raspberries crop in midsummer, while autumn fruiters crop from the end of summer, o en un l the first frosts, so if possible plant a few of each. There are different varie es of summer and autumnfrui ng raspberries, and the ‘Fallgold’ variety even has yellow fruits. If your soil is heavy and wet, and if it is alkaline or chalky, summer raspberries may struggle, so grow autumn fruiters as they can withstand the adverse condi ons. First, choose a sunny, sheltered spot and weed thoroughly so the raspberry canes are not compe ng with weeds for moisture and nutrients. If your garden is very hot and sunny in the summer then light shade for the raspberries from a nearby tree is recommended; otherwise, they like sunshine.

Page 14

Summerfrui ng raspberries need a support system – sturdy posts at a spacing of about 1.8m (6 ) and galvanized wires at a spacing of about 30cm (12in) will do the trick. Autumnfrui ng raspberries should be fine without support but you can e them in if you wish. The canes are available now and in their ‘dormant’ state (looking like a bundle of s cks) respond well to plan ng now. Space the canes 4045cm (1517in) apart and allow about 2m (6 6in) between rows. Dig in plenty of wellro ed manure and plant each cane at a depth of 58cm (23in), spreading the roots

Derry’s Nurseries, well worth a visit... out well so they establish be er. Firm the canes in then cut each one back to about 25cm (10in) above ground level and water in well if the soil is dry.

Derry’s Nurseries

Summerfrui ng raspberries fruit on the previous year’s growth, so plan ng now will be much be er in 2020 onwards than this year. Autumn fruiters produce their crop on the same year’s growth, so expect a decent crop this autumn and heavier ones from 2020.

Nicky Morgan MP Happy New Year! I wish all Soar Valley Life readers and supporters a peaceful and prosperous 2019. Loughborough Fair is nearly 800 years old and at the end of November it was named the ‘Best Free Event’ in the Leicestershire Promo ons 2018 Tourism and Hospitality Awards. I was very pleased to ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport to congratulate everyone involved in securing the award and the fair – and also to invite him to join me on a rollercoaster (or two) in November 2019! I think most MPs present in the House of Commons chamber then agreed that the Loughborough rollercoaster would be infinitely preferable to the Brexit rollercoaster which will con nue well into 2019. A number of other Charnwood businesses, restaurants and venues also picked up honours at the tourism awards. This includes Loughborough Town Hall which was also commended in the ‘Best Night Out’ category. The fabulous Rainbows Hospice in Loughborough will mark the 25th anniversary of its founding this year. I know that across the Soar Valley area (and well beyond) Rainbows has many dedicated supporters, fundraisers, staff, children and young people and their families who have benefited from their care and love. There are many plans to celebrate this important milestone in the history of Rainbows and to reflect on how things have changed since 1994. If you haven’t raised any funds recently then this might be the year to think about a New Year challenge which takes you out of your comfort zone but also supports Rainbows. I know the fundraising team there will have many sugges ons – including for the new Chief Execu ve, Dee Sissons, who is walking part of the Great Wall of China! If ge ng fit is one of your New Year’s Resolu ons and you fancy a challenge a bit closer to home then why not put your name forward for the everpopular Loughborough Half Marathon? The 2019 date has been announced – 7 April for this 13.1km course. And the marathon is organised by the excellent local charity, Living Without Abuse. LWA is a domes c abuse charity, established in 1977 and based in Loughborough. Formerly known as Loughborough Women’s Aid, they provide support to men and women experiencing domes c abuse across Leicester City, Leicestershire and Rutland. Slimming World is about to celebrate its Golden Year! 50 years of dedica on to helping thousands, no, millions of people lose weight and become healthier and happier. 50 years of research has led to the most healthy and effec ve way of losing weight and sustaining that new weight. Slimming World was founded by Margaret MilesBramwell (OBE, FRSA) in 1969. There are now more than 18,000 groups held weekly across the UK and Republic of Ireland via a network of 4,000 communitybased Slimming World Consultants, who receive specific training in the role of diet and physical ac vity in weight management, as well as sophis cated behaviourchange techniques. Slimming World’s healthy ea ng plan, Food Op mising, is based on the science of sa ety and energy density. Our phased ac vity programme, Body Magic, eases members into ac vity un l it becomes an intrinsic part of their daily rou ne. The principles behind Slimming World’s philosophy are based on a deep understanding of the challenges faced by overweight people and a recogni on that those who struggle with weight carry a double burden, the weight itself and a burden of guilt and shame about their weight. Living Together Just Great Music!

Have you moved in with your partner or are considering it? There are many people who believe that if you simply live with a partner for a fixed period of me, say five years, you become a “Common Law” husband or wife. This is wrong. Many people assume that if they live with someone for a long period of me or have children together that the law will protect them but there is currently no law which specifically protects cohabi ng couples. When a cohabi ng couple separate, the division of assets will be decided by property law. Courts have no discre on to relocate assets as they do within divorce and civil partnership proceedings. To avoid disagreement it is a sensible idea to have a

Cohabita on or Living Together Agreement prepared. This forms a contract between the couple. It will usually contain details of how any property is owned, whether jointly or separately between the par es, details of who will pay the bills and other outgoings, what will happen if the rela onship ends. Also what would happen in the event of significant changes to the rela onship such as the birth of children or serious illness of one party? When a property is purchased in joint names, it is essen al to consider how both par es’ interests should be protected. Also in what shares the joint property is owned. If one party puts more capital in, upon purchase, then this could be protected by a deed of trust between the owners. Your

solicitor will give you advice on different ways to jointly own property. To have things clear at the outset will avoid disagreement and disappointment if a rela onship breaks down. Cohabi ng couples should always consider making wills. If someone dies without a will, then on death their property will pass under the Intestacy Rules meaning that an unmarried partner would not benefit, which could lead to distant rela ves benefi ng in their place. Do you want to Salsa? Salsa means 'sauce' in the Spanish language, carrying connota ons of the spiciness common in La n and Caribbean cuisine. In the 20th century, Salsa acquired a musical meaning in both English and Spanish. Cubans and Puerto Ricans in New York used the term to describe swing or soul music. So Salsa suggests a frenzied, hot and wild musical experience that draws upon or reflects elements of La n culture, regardless of the style. Origina ng in La n America and the Caribbean, specifically Cuba, the Salsa dance has steadily grown in popularity since the 1940s and these days there are classes and clubs in most ci es and towns throughout the modern world. As you might expect, there are many health benefits to be gained by partaking in Salsa. Fast beats, quick steps and a La n flair are all characteris cs of Salsa dancing. While it makes for a fun night out with friends, it can also be a great way to get healthy and fit. And the best part of it is, the exercise doesn’t feel like exercise at all because you’re having so much fun doing it!

Edwards Sales and Le ngs, formerly Moving Made Cheaper, opened its doors on 1st January 2011 and has gone from strength to strength. We pride ourselves on these values s ll, and this is reected in our high levels of repeat business and recommenda ons.

The Independent Traveller’s Holiday Helpline Just Great Music!

Readers’ ques ons about Safari op ons:

What is the accommoda on standard like?

We are looking for a good quality Safari experience, where should we go?

It varies quite substan ally ranging from 5 star super deluxe to more basic but s ll good quality accommoda on. Food varies from property to property with some offering fine dining while others are of a good quality hotel standard. You can be sure you will not go hungry.

We work a lot in Southern Africa so feel most comfortable in recommending South Africa, Botswana or Namibia. There is no doubt that Kenya and Tanzania are also good op ons. What age can children go out on game vehicles? Children under 1012 years old are not allowed out on game drives because the rangers cannot be sure how they will react when close to wild animals. Over excitement or fear could lead an animal to charge the vehicle or to run away. If, however, you pay the extra for a private vehicle then any age is allowed; but the ranger may well stay farther away from the animals than normal un l he is very sure of the effect they have on the children. Do all safari require you to take Malaria tablets? No, there are good op ons for Malaria free safari par cularly in South Africa. They offer the full safari op on and are not larger versions of Windsor Safari Park! We have excellent op ons in the Garden Route area, Kwa Zulu Natal and north of Johannesburg in Madikwe. Will I see the Big 5? This is not Disney with the animal’s programmed to come into view as you come around the corner! Lion, Elephant, Rhino and Hippo are seen on most safari stops of 2 days or more. The difficult one to see is Leopard: elusive by nature and very shy, they are always a problem to see. If Leopards are a must see then you need to consider visi ng the Sabi Sands or Timbava areas of Kruger Na onal Park. It is very rare a 2 or 3 day stay in this area does not include a Leopard sigh ng.

How do you know what each property is like? We have a policy of not selling a safari property unless a member of our staff or our ground agents in Southern Africa have actually visited. Safari is one of the more expensive parts of your holiday and for many it can be the highlight; it makes sense to ensure that we offer the best fit safari, having listened to what you want to see. What if I do not see the Big 5? Easy for us to say having been fortunate to see the Big 5 on several occasions but there is so much more to see. The bird life in Southern Africa is amazing and many safari op ons have up to 400 resident birds to feast your eyes on. Some mes it is the lesser animals that create surprises: seeing a ru ng male Impala defend his ground during courtship, seeing a dung beetle struggle to push a dung ball up a hill so the female can lay her eggs, or a new born baby giraffe take its first steps can be the memories you bring back. How do I start to get informa on? Pop into our offices, we are open Monday to Saturday just off Granby Street Car Park in Loughborough. Our knowledgeable staff can assist you with ideas and draw up a plan with our very own Southern Africa brochure to get things moving. You are always welcome and the coffee pot is on!

Tracing Your Family History

TAILOR MADE ADVICE SPECIALISING IN:

County record offices may hold a variety of local government records, such as planning applications, school and pre-NHS hospital records though for both the latter 100 year closure usually applies. Planning applications may be of interest if you’re tracing the history of the house where you or your family lived. Hospital records may relate to infirmaries attached to workhouses, to hospitals founded charitably or to the establishment of asylums. In these cases, it may even be possible to discover photographs of those admitted as well as details of their conditions. You may also find records of temporary military hospitals set up to care for WW1 wounded. You may need help initially from the staff to find your way through their catalogues but the reward may be gaining better insights into the lives of your ancestors. Next time we’ll cover the kind of school records which may be available. The Loughborough group of the Leicestershire & Rutland Family History Society (LRFHS) meet on the third Tuesday of the month at All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre Rd, Loughborough, LE11 4LF, open at 6.45pm with refreshments for 7.30pm start.

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Ancient Water Found on Asteroid Bennu

The OSIRISREx spacecra was only 15 miles (24 km) from asteroid Bennu – on December 2, 2018 – when it captured this high resolu on image composed of mul ple mosaic images

NASA’s OSIRISREx spacecra arrived at asteroid Bennu on December 3, 2018. One week later – on December 10 – NASA announced the cra has already made a significant discovery. It has found hydrated minerals on Bennu’s surface – that is, evidence for previous (ancient) water on the rocky li le world.

NASA’s CubeSat Launch

This discovery doesn’t mean Bennu has liquid water – either inside or on its surface – right now. Instead, it shows that Bennu’s parent body, probably a much larger asteroid that Bennu broke off from a long me ago, did have water. The Origins, Spectral Interpreta on, Resource Iden fica on, SecurityRegolith Explorer – OSIRISREx – spacecra reached Bennu on December 3 a er traveling 1.4 million miles (2.2 million km) during the approach phase of the mission, from midAugust to early December. These areas of pigmenta on range from pale to very dark brown and are common on the face, arms, hands, neck, chest and shoulders. On those with thinning hair, they can also develop on the scalp. They normally increase in number and size a er a person reaches the age of forty, hence the less fla ering term “Age Spots”. In spite of being benign and flat, many people consider them unsightly, especially as they are associated with aging. Dark ones can be very difficult

Pets

By Ann Haldo Just Great Music!

Why It’s Important to Groom Your Pet This Spring Grooming is an important part of your pet care regime throughout the year, but when spring arrives you can be sure your furry friend will want to shed their coat in the warmer weather as much as we do. So what do you need to consider when grooming your pet this spring me?

them feel more comfortable, but also prevents knots and tangles developing. If the weather is par cularly warm it may also be worthwhile having your dog trimmed – this makes them easier to groom, and also reduces the me you have to spend vacuuming.

Brush them at least once a day

Watch out for fleas and cks

Grooming your pet regularly means you’re more likely to spot fleas or cks that have taken up

residence in their fur. Encouraged out into the environment by the warmer weather, they can be difficult to spot unless you’re close to your pet. Dealing effec vely with fleas and cks is an important considera on, however, as cks in par cular can cause serious illness. Avoiding hairballs When your pet grooms itself, loose hairs are ingested and can cause a blockage in their diges ve tract. Cats in par cular are fas dious about grooming themselves, which makes hairballs a common issue, especially for longhaired breeds. Regular grooming with a brush helps to avoid this problem by reducing the amount of fur entering their system.

There are 694,000 dogs in the East Midlands and our region ranks among the top 3 for percentage of household with dogs in the UK.

Short Story By Jackie Brewster Just Great Music!

La Choue e “Mum, come in here,” Jennifer whispered, dragging Doreen into the downstairs toilet. “Have you seen what Gary’s got in his rucksack?” “No love,” Doreen replied, steadying herself on the towel rail; it was a ght space for two people and a rucksack. “I don’t go nosing through your brother’s belongings, and neither should you.” “Shhh, he could be out of the shower any minute,” Jennifer said. “I need to show you something. Have you no ced he’s been behaving a bit strangely this week?” “He has been a bit jumpy,” Doreen agreed reluctantly. “I thought it meant love was in the air.” “Me too,” Jennifer nodded. “You know how I said he should take Elaine somewhere special for Valen ne’s Day?” “You wouldn’t stop going on about it!” Doreen interrupted sternly. “I had to!” Jennifer declared. “The poor thing, all he ever does is take her for walks in the countryside. What woman wouldn’t rather be wined and dined somewhere fancy?” “She’s the outdoors type,” Doreen shrugged. “Honestly Mum, is she a woman or a Labrador?” Jennifer shuddered. “They even go out in the rain.” “He seems happy,” Doreen said. “That’s what I thought,” Jennifer said. “I just had this no on that he might be planning on popping the ques on tonight.” “What a lovely thought!” Doreen gasped. Jennifer con nued, “I had this hunch that I if looked in his

Page 56

rucksack I’d find an engagement ring.” Doreen grasped Jennifer’s arm. “And did you?” “No.” Jennifer opened the drawstring of Gary’s bag. “I found these. They’re nightvision binoculars, a thermos and some cheese sandwiches.” Both women looked at each other in horror. “Mum, tell me honestly, have you properly met this Elaine?” Jennifer asked. “He says she’s quite shy,” Doreen offered. “Don’t you think it’s odd that he only invites her round when we’re not here?” “I assumed he wanted some privacy.” Doreen felt flustered. “What are you trying to say, Jennifer?” “Well, what if Gary just imagines that Elaine’s his girlfriend?” Jennifer said carefully. “What if he’s just been watching her from afar with these binoculars?” “You mean like a stalker?” Doreen shook her head. “Our Gary’s not like that.” “And you know how he finally agreed to book a fancy restaurant, La Choue e, for tonight? Well I googled the restaurant,” Jennifer said. “It doesn’t exist.”

Doreen went pale. “What are you two doing hiding in here?” Gary surprised them both by opening the door. He frowned. “Why have you got my bag?” Jennifer took a moment to compose herself. “How do you explain these?” She held up the binoculars. Gary’s face froze. “They’re for this evening,” he snapped, “and none of your business.” “We know La Choue e doesn’t exist,” Jennifer said. “It’s me to come clean.” Gary stared at her and then his face so ened. “I said that just to get you off my case,” he said. “Elaine really isn’t interested in fancy restaurants.” “Where are you going then?” Jennifer asked suspiciously. Gary sighed, “I’m taking her barn owl spo ng.” “So you’re not stalking her then?” Doreen asked. “No, Mum,” Gary laughed. “She really is my girlfriend.” “That doesn’t sound very roman c,” Jennifer pouted. Gary smiled. What Jennifer had failed to find was the diamond engagement ring he’d hidden in the lid of the thermos flask.

“If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.” Orson Welles

Be Prepared in Winter Just Great Music!

Do you recall the weather we had a mere eight weeks before the start of last year’s hot spell? The “Beast from the Eastâ€? dumped snow across the UK. And we had to drive in it. It’s said every year, but it is worth repea ng: a li le prepara on me on your car will pay dividends if the “Beastâ€? comes back. Check your vehicle’s lights work, windows are clear, wipers work, uids are full, the ba ery is charged, and your tyres are in good and legal condi on. On this last point you could consider changing to winter tyres, as they have proven beneďŹ ts when the temperature drops below 5 degrees. Alterna vely, I have found a pair of snow socks around the driving wheels of my car a viable, if shortterm, alterna ve.

When making a journey it’s wise to take the following: warning triangle, a torch, boots, deicer, ice scraper and a fully charged phone, perhaps with spare ba ery pack. Some recommend taking a tow rope and shovel too; if you are likely to use country lanes then yes, but on a trip to the shops, perhaps not. If you must make a long journey, even via the motorway network, and snow has fallen or is expected, take a blanket and a hot drink in a ask. We have all heard the stories of blocked motorways, the resultant tailbacks and motorists spending a freezing night on the hard shoulder. Being prepared is the watch word in winter. By Iain Betson

Cancer—Help is at Hand Just Great Music!

Loughborough Cancer Self Help Group now in its 35th Year! Every Monday evening since 1988 a small group of local folk have a ended a mee ng at John Storer House on Ward’s End in the town centre of Loughborough. Here they have discussed old and new ways to make the best of a bad situa on and discover therapies and treatments that are o en not made public or are so new they are not common knowledge. The group actually started in 1983 and was one of the first in the UK; older, by a few months, than the Na onal Associa on of Cancer Self Help groups. The group was founded by two ladies, Joyce Walton and Gill Hurd who both had been diagnosed with cancer and wouldn’t accept the poor prognosis given

to them. They looked for alterna ve treatments other than the surgery and radio therapy which was all that was available back in the 1980s. The very first mee ngs were held in a small room above Taylors Health Food Shop on Biggin Street in Loughborough. Both Gill and Joyce were given a worst case scenario of a much shortened life span by their respec ve consultants. Joyce was a busy teacher with three young sons and was only in her late for es when first diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Since then she has learned and prac ced a whole ra of complimentary treatments, diets and nutri onal supplements and met with hundreds of fellow cancer pa ents and experts, both in tradi onal medicine as well as alterna ve therapies and prac ces. The aim of the group since its incep on was to offer help and support to both pa ents and their families and friends, with a view to making the very best of their lives however long that may be. Gill lived on for Mee ngs are held at John Storer House most Monday evenings star ng at 7pm

another 17 years, well past her consultant’s forecast, and passed away in her eigh es only a few years ago. Joyce is s ll with us, 35 years and three lots of cancer later; she is eighty seven this year. She tells stories of many members who have long outlived most if not all expecta ons. It is free to join the group, it’s open to all and members are asked to contribute just a pound each week to cover room hire costs. They are very pleased to have been one of the first Chari es to join and benefit from The Charnwood Lo ery which started in September this year. When you sign up to the Charnwood Lo ery, which is £1 per week, you could win £25,000. It was created in 2018 by Charnwood Borough Council and its aim is to support community projects in the local area. The Charnwood Community Lo ery operates on the principle of raising money within the community for the community. We empower local good causes to raise money in a fun and effec ve way.

Another very easy way to support the group is to join Give As You Live: The Give as you Live ini a ve is something that any one can do and it doesn’t cost a penny. If you shop on line instead of going direct to the retailer’s site you go through Give as you Live to their site and the retailer donates a small amount to us. You can also buy grocery cards for when you do shopping in the stores. You can load these with an amount of cash and use it to pay at the ll. You can also donate via the Give as you Live page. All you have to do is go to the page, sign up and nominate your chosen charity. Here is the link that directs you to our support link: h ps://www.giveasyoulive.com/join/loughborough cancersel elpgroup Paula Reed of Reed Wellbeing, adver sed above, has been a volunteer with the Loughborough Cancer Self Help Group for the last 9 years and has given complimentary treatments to members of the group free of charge. This is what she says of the group and its members:

“I have witnessed amazing things during my me here. The focus is always posi ve, there is always another way of looking at things, at situa ons. If your life is touched by cancer, as a pa ent or that of someone close, your perspec ve about the condi on can at least be made more tolerable and in many cases lives are transformed. The beliefs you hold may not be serving you for the best. I have seen many mes lives made be er by being together, sharing knowledge and experience. I am certain there is great good in being open to change and acknowledging that there is another way. I am pu ng my discoveries down on paper and my book will be published in May 2019.
