Mary took a call the other day from one of our readers; that’s not unusual, we get lots of calls asking about all manner of things. O en there’s a bit of praise followed by something along the lines of, “I wonder if you have any space to promote our charity event?” To which we always respond helpfully by asking them for details of where we can send our media informa on pack and say that as a charity they will be able to use our lowest discounted price and if we have space we could run a free feature to go alongside their advert. But this call was a bit different and really got us feeling all warm and ngly. It went something like this: Caller ‐ I’m hoping you can help me with the name and address of one of your adver sers. My son, who lives on his own and is disabled, needed someone to fix his shower which would only produce lukewarm water. The plumber we contacted in Soar Valley Life was called Hollydan. He was really understanding, such a nice man, and he came out to check the shower. He tested it thoroughly making sure the wiring was safe and working as it should be and announced to my son that everything was fine and it had only needed adjus ng. When my son asked him how much it would be, the gentleman said there was no charge. My son insisted he take at least something for his trouble, but the gentleman wouldn’t have it and wished him well. I wanted to send him a card to thank him for his kindness. Mary ‐ Well, wasn’t that a lovely thing to do? Caller ‐ Yes it was! And by the way, we love your li le magazine. My husband is a re red editor and has a habit of using a red pen to proof read the newspaper, tut‐tu ng as he reads! Mary ‐ Oh, dear, I hope Soar Valley Life doesn’t make him tut too much! Caller ‐ Oh, no ‐ yours is alright ‐ it’s a pleasure to read ‐ especially the editor’s le er. Mary ‐ Oh, thank you! I’ll tell my husband ‐ he writes the editor’s le er and o en wonders if anyone ever bothers to read it. Caller ‐ Oh, tell him we always read it ‐ I keep them all and look forward to the next! Steve Blimey!

Gardens for the Body, Mind and Spirit There are many physical benefits to gardening but a garden can also serve our higher needs, providing a harmonious place to relax and unwind, reflect and restore ourselves; a place where we can appreciate the beauty of nature. If you want to create your own sanctuary this year, whether you a looking for a complete re‐design or inspira on to improve your exis ng garden, a consulta on with me will set you on the right path.
Tes monial “The best thing I ever did when moving house to the Midlands was to ask Claire to come and see my garden. I love gardens and gardening in theory but had li le knowledge of the landscaping side or plants. Claire's ini al consulta on was so helpful and gave me a star ng point and a clear idea of what I was working with and what would be needed. A friend had originally suggested I could do all this myself using the internet but I have benefi ed so much from Claire's vast knowledge and sensi ve approach, besides which her exper se gave me confidence. Many thanks Claire.” J Kent, Loughborough

Alan Dayman’s Wint Fight the Frosts
T
he frosts are here, and in the weeks ahead the worst of the winter is likely to arrive too. Added to that there is o en a fair bit of rain or even snow at this me of year, so our gardens can be in for quite a ba ering. These days most of the plants you grow in your garden are probably fairly frost‐ resistant, but what can you do to ensure that damage to those which are not so hardy is kept to a minimum? Some deteriora on may already have occurred, but it is the last frosts and those which hit the plants in spring that are likely to be most damaging, as they catch plants out when they have already put on a bit of new growth. So, there’s definitely a very good reason to brace yourself, get out into the garden and take some precau ons. Plants in containers are par cularly vulnerable to freezing or fros ng as their roots are not protected beneath the soil, but are rela vely exposed with just the container and a bit of compost to cover them. Thin‐walled containers pose the greatest threat, especially those made of metal.
Page 12
Thicker wood or ceramic pots provide a li le extra insula on, but even these may need a bit more. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it up well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains – it may not look pre y but it’ll do the job. If the container is in a very prominent posi on and you want it to look more appealing, buy some hessian and use lengths of this to create an outermost layer to hide the insula on material – it can actually end up looking rather nice! If very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather which may have promoted some so , new growth that will be par cularly frost prone, drape a double layer of hor cultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Larger individual plants in borders, which are too big for even the large fleece jackets, can be given longer term protec on with a home‐made

nter Gardening Tips protec ve ‘cage’. Just use four stakes or sturdy canes to create a framework which you wrap with ne ng or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well; during the cold weather they con nue to need a fair amount of water and if this is frozen solid in the soil, they soon suffer. So it is essen al to con nue to water these, especially if they are in a spot where they are sheltered from a lot of the rain which falls, or if the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground becomes frosted will help too. Once frozen, soil moisture becomes unavailable, so this mulch will help to keep the water available. Although most fruit trees ‐ like apples and pears, cherries and plums ‐ are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly‐opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful as by then the buds are further developed. If you are plan ng new fruit plants, it really pays to buy
them from a specialist nursery and try to get late‐flowering varie es where possible, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is s ll a risk of frost. Finally, don’t forget to use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well anchored fleece such as Easy Tunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protec on and that bit of extra warmth for germina ng seeds and any seedlings brave (or foolhardy) enough to poke their heads above ground before the cold weather is over! If you are planning on sowing any early varie es of crops such as broad beans or le uce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of well‐anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a li le warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and will get less of a cold shock. Alan Dayman is senior nurseryman at Derry’s Nurseries, Main Street, Cossington LE7 4UU Tel (01509) 812815.

Thoughts now turn to what 2017 will bring for all of us. Many experienced MPs and poli cal commentators say they cannot remember a me when both domes c and interna onal poli cs was so unpredictable. Here in Britain we expect the Government to give no ce, under Ar cle 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, by 31st March so we can start the process of leaving the EU. This is just the start of a long and complex nego a on process. My personal view is that in leaving the EU we must not fatally undermine our economy, our cons tu on or our values as a country. In America January means the start of the presidency of Donald Trump and no one really knows what that will mean, neither for the USA nor for America’s place in the world. There are many other parts of the world where there is great uncertainty about how events will unfold in 2017 – Syria and Yemen, for example. Wonderful local charity Home‐Start Charnwood is running a new course for volunteers to work with families needing extra support. The course runs over 5 Thursdays from 26th January – contact Ruth on 01509 239786 for more informa on. Post nup al agreements not just for wealthy celebri es Recently, there have been reports in the press about a celebrity seeking to challenge the terms of the post nup al agreement on the basis that he was put under pressure to sign it to enable the marriage to con nue a er an alleged extra mar al rela onship. These proceedings are in the Sco sh courts, but post nup al agreements can also be made in England and Wales. Most people have heard of pre‐nup al agreements, but many have not heard of or considered a post nup al agreement. In common with pre‐nup al agreements, they are contractual, covering arrangements for how all of a couples assets, including property, savings and investments, pensions and incomes shall be divided in the event of separa on or divorce. They can also include arrangements regarding children. The difference is that they are made a er the par es have married, not before. They can be drawn up at any me during a marriage. Why might you consider a post nup al agreement? You wanted to have a prenup al agreement, but didn’t feel it was the right thing to do at that me; it
is not a very roman c step. There may have been a change in your financial circumstances since your marriage, for example, inheritance or large increase in assets. There have been problems during the marriage. It is your second marriage and you want to protect your exis ng assets for the benefit of your children from your first marriage. Are post nup al agreements binding? There is no specific legisla on to make post nup al agreements enforceable in England and Wales. They are one of the factors that a court takes into account in reaching a se lement where there is a dispute. If dra ed correctly, a post nup al agreement is a sensible way to create certainty for both par es to a marriage and can provide a framework for a financial se lement in the event of a separa on and divorce, poten ally saving considerable legal costs and arguments between the par es. Haven't they done well? Outside professional recogni on is the icing on the cake of success and the team at Moving Made Cheaper of Loughborough are succeeding in some order... Of course, we like award winners here at Soar Valley Life (having li ed the runner up trophy for Best New Mag in 2013) but when you look around at the compe on in the housing rentals and sales market you really begin to appreciate the recogni on Clare Edwards ‐ Director of Moving Made Cheaper ‐ and her team have received. And when you consider that they are only in their 6th year of trading this accolade is quite remarkable. I visited Clare at her office on Frederick Street a couple of weeks ago and no ced the difference ‐ the office was twice the size since I was last there in 2014, but there were s ll broad smiles of welcome from all the team. Clare told me about the award process and the hoops they had had to jump through: “In May 2016, we entered the Bri sh Property Awards, which was developed to judge estate agents on the standard of service given to consumers, to reward agents who provide an excellent

level of service and to give the public reassurance and trust in the winning agents. The Bri sh Property Awards was created by a dedicated team of former estate agency owners who believe that the industry is unfairly judged by some consumers, due to the shortcomings of some estate agents. The management team of the Bri sh Property Awards organisa on state: “We passionately believe that agents who provide a fantas c service and go that extra mile for their

clients should be rewarded and highlighted for their endeavours.” A er 68 weeks of being mystery shopped and having been judged against a set of 25 criteria in order to get a balanced overview of the level of service provided, Moving Made Cheaper was awarded Gold Winner for Loughborough. They were then entered into the regional awards, along with all the other town winners across the country. On 9th September 2016, Olivia and Hannah represented Moving Made Cheaper at the awards ceremony in London, which was hosted by Mar n Roberts from Homes Under the Hammer. Moving Made Cheaper was awarded the Bronze award for the Midlands, which is a fantas c achievement for a small agency in Loughborough, and a true reflec on of the hard work and commitment given by all five members of the team; that’s myself Clare Edwards, BSc MNAEA MARLA, Managing Director, Eleanor Fitzgerald Property Consultant, Stefanie Danvers Senior Sales Nego ator, Hannah Grant Sales Nego ator and Olivia Shaw Le ngs Nego ator.

What is Presbyopia? When you are looking at something far away, your eye – if you are perfect sighted – is shaped so that the object is clearly focused on the re na and the image is clear. When you look at something close up, such as a book, the muscles inside your eye which surround the lens contract to make the lens change shape; this focuses the light from the book onto your re na. The lens inside a child’s eyes is elas c and can change shape easily to change focus from looking far away to looking at something close up. As we get older, the
lens naturally s ffens and changes shape less easily. This means that the distance up to which we are able to focus gets further away and we are no longer able to focus on things that are close to us, having to hold them further away to see them clearly. This change in focus becomes more no ceable in our late thir es or for es. It is quite common to see people who are presbyopic holding things away from them in order to see them clearly. When you are presbyopic you will need glasses to focus on the different distances you need to see. This may mean having separate pairs for distance and reading. Other op ons include bifocal glasses which have two separate areas of the lens which are separated by a line; the top part for distance and the bo om for near. Varifocal lenses work in a similar way to bifocal lenses, but they have no line since the lens gradually changes its focus from top to bo om. Contact lenses are also available to correct presbyopia, but this does not work for every pa ent so I suggest you discuss it with your optometrist. Gradual wear and tear of the ssues that make up the plantar fascia – this usually affects adults who are 40 years of age or over especially women who have had children. Increased Risk You're at an increased risk of gradual wear and tear damaging your plantar fascii s if you: • are overweight • spend long periods of me standing • wear flat‐soled shoes – such as sandals or flip flops Self Help Stretch the calf muscles regularly, wear suppor ve shoes avoiding flats. The Benefits of Omega 3 It has long been known that omega 3 is very important to health. If you are of the older genera on like me, you may remember being given a tablespoon of cod liver oil every morning. Unlike all other fats omega 3 cannot be made by the body so we need to get it through food or supplements. Dry skin, eyes, hair and bri le nails are all signs of omega 3 deficiency. A low omega 3 intake can be associated with anxiety, irritability, mood swings and even severe depression. It can also affect brain chemicals related to a en on and focus making us prone to poor concentra on. It can even affect memory. Omega 3 regulates inflamma on so when low you may see a rise in condi ons such as chronic pain, eczema, psoriasis or joint problems. To increase your levels of omega 3 eat more oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and fresh tuna or use omega 3 rich seeds like flax seeds and chia seeds in smoothies or salads. Just making a simple change to our diet can make such a big difference. Why not try it and see? Paula Reed

associated with aging. Dark ones can be very difficult to conceal with make‐up and those on the hands can be distressing because they are easily seen.
These areas of pigmenta on range from pale to very dark brown and are common on the face, arms, hands, neck, chest and shoulders. On those with thinning hair, they can also develop on the scalp. They normally increase in number and size a er a person reaches the age of forty, hence the less fla ering term “Age Spots”. And Another Thing... Tom and the Business Opportunity by Tom Hughes
Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook
Sarah was dying up in the lounge when she chanced upon my newly purchased motoring publica on. “Ferrari Owner? Tom? Have we won the lo ery?” I entered carrying a cardboard box. “Not yet dear, but soon we will be rolling in it!” “Tom, what are all these boxes doing in the hall? And why have you got a funny look in your eye?” “I’m excited, that’s all. In these boxes is our future… our fortune.” Unimpressed, Sarah ran a knife down the packing tape and opened up the carton. “Why have you got boxes of coffee and tea? Don’t tell me you’re opening a cafe because the hours are a killer and…” “Don’t be silly. And this isn’t just any old coffee or tea, darling, this stuff is special coffee ‐ it’s the elixir of life. It lowers cholesterol, promotes good health and generally makes you feel fantas c!” “Well that’s very nice, darling, but why have you bought so much? This lot will last us a life me.” Then the full horror hit her. She plonked herself down on one of the boxes and put her head in her hands. “Tom, first it was water filters, then it was perfume, then it was vacuum cleaners, then it was those buy‐to‐let seminars. Do you remember them? If I hadn’t stopped you we’d be homeless by now.” My sheepish grin gave it away. Sarah strode into the kitchen and a er a he y shove managed to squeeze into the garage. “Tom, you can’t move in here.” It was obvious that Sarah viewed my shrewd investment as just
Page 46
another one of my hare‐brained schemes. I felt that she deserved an explana on. “Sarah darling, this is a new way of doing business. This is Mul ‐Level Marke ng.” “So you’ve signed up for yet another pyramid scheme.” Before I could protest there was a knock on the door. “Hi Uncle Billy, what brings you here?” asked Sarah. “Tom said there was a mee ng tonight? A business opportunity? I could do with a few extra quid on top of my pension. And so could cousin Arthur.” And so, before you could say Bentley Con nental, our front lounge was full to the brim with rela ves, neighbours and, bizarrely, the man who had arrived to read the gas meter. Flip chart in place, there was hushed cha er as I nervously paced the 80% wool twist. Then disaster ‐ Sarah entered with a tray full of steaming hot PG Tips. Incensed, I shooed her back into the kitchen. “Are you insane woman? Now pour that away and open a box of my product. Then wait un l the end of the presenta on when they can all have a taste.” Had she never seen Dragon’s Den? Then it was me to present my pitch to my poten al distributors. Carefully, I explained that once they became one of my downline, I would earn a royalty from each bag of tea they sold. Realising from the look on Uncle Billy’s face that my future wealth was not the main mo va on for him being there, I skilfully changed tack. “And of course, if you recruit your own distributors, then you get your own royal es!”

A voice from the back (Mr Green from number 11) piped up, “So it’s a pyramid selling scheme?” “No, it’s a business opportunity,” I beamed. “Well I’m not convinced, and while you’re at it, any chance I can have my hedge clippers back?” Another hand went up. Feeling threatened, I decided to deal with the doubters head on. “Listen pal, if you’re not on board, you’re free to go.” “Sorry, can I just get into that cupboard? I need to take a gas reading.” Finally, Sarah appeared with the elixir of life ‐ the herbal coffee. My cap ve audience began sipping. They looked around at their fellow delegates. Then they took another sip to confirm my worst fears. It was absolutely horrible. As the last of my audience departed Sarah, shaking her head, had some advice for me. “Look Tom, you don’t have to prove anything to me. I think you’re wonderful as you are.” Beaming, I went to hug her. She responded with a shove. “Listen Donald Trump, you can have a hug a er you’ve emp ed the garage and taken that lot to the p!”

Pets Page Why It’s Important To Socialise Your Puppy Socialising your puppy is important to its general development, and encourages a calm, confident and friendly personality that’s accep ng of change and new situa ons. It also makes life with a dog easier for you, and helps with general training.
Vary the ac vi es You’ll retain your puppy’s interest by introducing plenty of variety, such as mee ng new people and other animals in different environments, but take care not to overload their nervous system. Keep hold of your puppy at first when you meet new people, le ng them gently approach your dog with a small treat. This will make it a construc ve experience for the dog, and they’ll retain posi ve associa ons. A few ac vi es to try It’s also worth remembering that un l your puppy has its first vaccina on, you may need to avoid certain situa ons, but here are a few sugges ons for places to go and people to meet once it is safe:
• Busy, noisy streets as well as quiet countryside areas. • Young and older children (under close supervision). • Paddling in the sea. • Mee ng a variety of dogs of all ages, shapes and sizes. • People on motorbikes, cycles and skateboards. The noise of household appliances can scare a young puppy, so it’s a good idea to expose them to the vacuum cleaner and washing machine very carefully, in short stages. Dog training classes are a great way to meet different dogs, and also provide a good support network for you. h p://blog.petplan.co.uk/01/20 16/advice/dogtrainingsocialising-puppy-puppies-withpeopleother- animals-canines/

Venus Queen of our Heaven
NASA Messenger image of the crescent Venus
The Earth’s twin in size, Venus our nearest planet is wreathed in thick clouds of 96% carbon dioxide; it’s atmosphere is over 90 mes denser that ours. Only space probes that carry powerful radar can penetrate the thick clouds to see in detail this world’s hidden volcanic surface. Venus is a real treat this January and February as it nears its closest approach to us. If you can view it through a small telescope you’ll have the rare chance to see it illuminated as a crescent. But don’t wait un l it gets dark. Seen against a black sky, the cloud wreathed world is so brilliant it’s difficult to make out any details. It’s best to view just a er Sunset as the Evening Star first becomes visible in the twilight glow. Through a telescope, the planet then appears less dazzling against a pale blue sky.

Life coaching can be life changing! If you wish your life were different and you want to change it then finding a good life coach can make all the difference.
A Life Coach:
Life coaching can open up so much poten al for people; it can help you to become the person you were always meant to be. O en we struggle, pu ng up with problems and issues that can easily be resolved.
Lock up your stuff! It seems that there’s a new hack every couple of days, with websites admi ng that hackers have managed to get people’s account details. That’s dangerous, because many people use the same passwords on every site ‐ so if somebody manages to get your login details for one website, they might be able to get into your email and favourite online shops. The good news is that protec ng yourself is simple.
Some things can take a li le me, but most issues can be improved a er only a few sessions. Always remember ‐ there's so much we can do to improve life, par cularly if we get the right help. First of all, don’t use the same user name and password twice. And secondly, don’t use easy to guess passwords. “12345678” is one of the UK’s most popular passwords and easy to guess, but something like “ektg‐243n‐brb456” isn’t. That’s hard to remember, of course, but you don’t have to remember it: on Apple hardware the Safari web browser can remember your passwords for you, and on other devices, apps such as the excellent LastPass or 1Password do the same.
