Out of Sight Out of... John Wannamaker, a nineteenth and early twen eth century American merchant, store owner, mul millionaire, early proponent of adver sing and, some say, the founder of modern marke ng, famously said: “Half the money I spend on adver sing is wasted - the trouble is, I don't know which half.” He started out in life from modest beginnings; his dad was a brick maker and his mum was a farmer’s daughter. But the adver sing and marke ng he did certainly paid handsome dividends in spite of him not knowing which adver sing was effec ve. I’d say this well known phrase was a bit tongue in cheek. J W joshing with the media moguls of his day. It’s also an admission by a very clever man about the complexi es and mysteries inherent in this most necessary of commercial ac vi es. What Mary and I know, a er a few years with Soar Valley Life, is that you know when it works, because people tell you. In the last two or three weeks we’ve been told by a number of our adver sers how well it works for them. To name just a few we’ve spoken to: Smashgard, Hart Property Services, The Waterside Inn, Garre ‐Long Solicitors, JDS Window Cleaning, The Independent Traveller and Dream Doors. And we also adver se for ourselves of course ‐ we usually put a house advert in to call out for distributors or those businesses wan ng a quick burst of exposure with a leaflet ‐ and our ever popular compe ons get hundreds of entries. Last month, while back‐ checking deliveries, within the first hour we had three frustrated readers asking us where on earth the Robin was! But we have to admit that it doesn’t work for everyone, or does it? Consider this: do you think every me a Coca Cola advert appears there’s a rush to the fridge to open another can? With “Every li le helps” we whizz off down to Tesco to fill a bag for life with whatever? No, of course not. O en, it’s about plan ng the name, so that when you next need that whatever, it is more likely to be in your mind than not, and at that point you are aware of that op on. This month there are nearly 90 op ons for you to choose from. One thing about adver sing that the erudite Mr. Wannamaker knew for sure though ‐ if you don’t adver se you won’t succeed. Out of sight, out of mind...

The Christmas Rose There are many plants associated with the fes ve season; one of my par cular favourites is Hellebores niger or the Christmas Rose. This is probably the best know species of Hellebore and one of the earliest to ower, hence its common name. By Christmas, during a mild winter, long las ng white blooms will appear over a sturdy clump of leathery evergreen foliage. They are deer and rabbit resistant and are happiest in par al to full shade. Try plan ng them in containers to add some fes ve cheer this season. Mixed containers look most eec ve if they include one Christmas rose mixed with the glossy leaves of ivies, evergreen Euonymus or Skimmia. Claire Jones

Well, it’s that time of year again when we start to plan ahead for the Christmas festivities! One decision is whether to have a traditional freshly cut Christmas tree with that classic pine scent or an easy to assemble real-looking artificial tree? Whatever your choice, we have many varieties and sizes to suit every home. If opting for a real tree, there are a few handy hints to keep it fresh right up until the big day. Before taking it inside, saw an inch off the trunk or drill some holes, to allow it to soak up water. You’ll be surprised how much it drinks! The tree should be kept in a water retaining stand and, if you can, choose an area preferably away from a radiator, this will help retain the needles. Then decorate it! We’ve a huge assortment of long lasting LED fairy lights, indoor and out, tree ornaments and decorations in The Christmas Shop, so let your imagination run wild! It’s also time to start Christmas shopping too, or indeed start your own wish list! Here at Birstall there are gifts and treats to suit everyone and every budget: from barbecues and accessories to gardening gifts, outdoor boots, fashion scarves, handbags, jewellery and gifts for the home. It’s all here at our one stop shop. The kids can post their Christmas letters to Santa here this year. Bring them along to the Garden Centre and we will pass them on for you. You may even receive a reply from the North Pole! Santa himself will be visiting us too, on Sunday 4th and Sunday 11th December from 1pm to 3pm. So come along and join in the festivities with us at Birstall Garden Centre.

t is not that long un l Christmas and if you’ve any gardening friends, it is so easy to get them a present they’ll really enjoy and find useful. A trip to a good local garden centre like ours will reveal plenty of poten al gi s in a wide range of prices that will suit anybody from the complete novice to the most experienced gardener. Houseplants can make brilliant presents, so why not choose a couple of really good‐looking ones? At this me of year there are plenty, such as the indoor cyclamens, azaleas, flamboyant poinse as or a gorgeous Christmas cactus which all look fantas c whilst in flower ‐ but don’t forget that lots of the foliage houseplants look great, too. Make sure that you keep the plants at their best by placing them in a suitable posi on before you give them away, as they could otherwise suffer quite quickly. Outdoor plants are also an ideal choice, but before you purchase a gi for someone’s garden make sure that you know that the plant you are choosing will go to a suitable home. There is no use buying a limeha ng plant such as a Pieris, Rhododendron, Camellia or Azalea for somebody if they garden on chalk, unless you know that they have a supply of
Page 14
ericaceous compost and a good sized pot to hand too! Of course, a pot could also be a present for someone and we have a great range of frost proof pa o and garden Frost Proof pa o pots pots always in stock. at Derrys If you’ve me, why not create a pot of winter flowering bedding plants, perhaps under‐planted with a few small bulbs such as crocus or miniature daffodils? This will make a lovely instant garden impact present for anyone, whatever the size of their garden. Despite the huge quan es of Christmas paraphernalia in garden centres at the moment, any half decent centre will s ll have a good range of winter bedding plants and winter interest plants available. Anyone with an interest in growing vegetables would enjoy one of the many gardening books on the subject. (Mary, Steve says he’d like the Veg Grower’s Almanac!)

Bird feeding equipment and supplies now take up plenty of space in garden centres, so you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Gardeners love prac cal things so a good hoe will always be welcome, or how about a new pair of quality secateurs? A raised bed kit is a great gi idea too, allowing people to grow gorgeous vegetables even if their own soil isn’t ideal. Some kits even come with the op on to add crop covers made from fine mesh to keep pests out, or polythene to protect from the worst of the weather and provide off‐season warmth. Bird boxes, feed and So, rather than rushing out feeders always and buying something that available ‘will do’ as a gi , take a moment and see what you can find which will really bring a smile to someone’s face! Nicky Morgan MP The Boundary Commission for England has been reviewing the boundaries of our parliamentary cons tuencies and have now published their proposals. If approved they would take effect at the next general elec on, likely to be held in 2020. The current proposal for our area is that both Shepshed borough council wards would be moved into the North West Leicestershire cons tuency. Shepshed will s ll remain part of Charnwood Borough Council. The Loughborough cons tuency would also lose the Wolds ward and Sileby ward to the Charnwood seat but would then extend across the No nghamshire border to cover the southern part of the Rushcliffe cons tuency. The principle behind the proposals is that MPs should represent more equal sized cons tuencies and the number of MPs should be reduced from 650 to 600. Most cons tuencies are changing in one way or another. You can comment on the proposals here: h ps://www.bce2018.org.uk/ and I would be very interested to hear your views too. Please do e‐mail me with your thoughts. I o en visit local schools to meet both pupils and staff and welcome school visits to the Palace of Westminster. One of my regular visits is to St Bartholomew’s in Quorn where I am quizzed by the Year 6 pupils on an annual basis and they then enjoy a visit to London. They always ask excellent ques ons about my work as their MP and how I got involved in poli cs. Parliament now has a wonderful new Educa on Centre so in addi on to a tour of Parliament our school visitors are able to explore topical issues with members of the Educa on Team. Many of you will be reading this in the busy period before Christmas. I am beginning to see the fes ve cards creeping into the shops and the adverts on TV. I always enjoy the many local Christmas events and look forward to mee ng many Soar Valley Life readers at them. Please do say hello.

Se lement Agreements – What are they? Should you sign? In the majority of cases, employment rela onships end amicably, although unfortunately this is not always the case, and there will be situa ons in which employees are en tled to compensa on. In other cases, employees may be en tled to redundancy payments. Even if the rela onship ends amicably, if an employee will receive a lump sum upon the termina on of their employment, they may be asked to sign a formal document, known as a Se lement Agreement (formerly called a Compromise Agreement). By signing a Se lement Agreement, an employee will waive their right to bring most claims against their employer; as such, they can be very useful to employers and it is usual for an employee to be incen vised by payments that exceed the amounts they are en tled to under their contract, or legisla on. The waiver is clearly significant and so a Se lement Agreement will only be valid if the employee has received independent advice on its nature and effect from a relevant adviser; it is usual for an employer to
at least contribute to the employee’s costs of obtaining the advice, given the benefit of the waiver to the employer. A key considera on for the adviser is whether the proposed payments at least equal the amounts the employee may be en tled to receive; if they do not, the employee can decide whether to sign the agreement (and provide the waiver), ask the employer to pay more, or decline the agreement and claim the monies the employer is a emp ng to avoid. There will usually be other issues covered by a Se lement Agreement, including confiden ality, return of company property, restric ons on future employment and the taxa on of the payments, all of which mean that it is essen al to obtain professional advice on the impact of signing, in order to make an informed decision. If you have been asked to sign a Se lement Agreement, call Nick Gay or Laura Anderson for some ini al advice on the terms.

Why Visit Canada? The Independent Traveller, a er working in Canada over the last 40 years, lists a few of the reasons it excites so many people... Such a diverse landscape to discover ‐ from the drama c Atlan c coastline to Niagara Falls and then across the prairies to the majes c mountains of the west. Amazing wildlife to view ‐ ranging from polar bears to whales to grizzly and black bears catching salmon, moose, cougars, wolves and deer besides the countless smaller animals. Look to the sky as well because many areas of Canada are staging posts in the mass bird migra ons to the arc c each year. Don’t miss the raptor collec ons including bald eagles and osprey. Great cosmopolitan ci es ‐ Toronto, Montreal ‐ the second largest French speaking city in the world, Calgary with its famous Stampede and Vancouver are many people’s choice of favourite city. However, don’t forget the ci es of the east, Quebec City, Halifax and St John’s, all of which offer some great historical sites. The trains are a big draw ‐ imagine boarding the Canadian in Toronto at the start of the 3,500 mile journey across Canada to Vancouver. Delicious food and a marvellous experience aboard what many believe to be one of the world’s greatest train journeys. In the west the mountains can be explored by riding the Rocky Mountaineer as well for that extra touch of luxury. Food is a surprise ‐ great choice with a wide variety that reflects the ethnic background of Canada’s popula on. It is o en said if you cannot find a type of food in Toronto then it probably does not exist.
Space! Currently, in the Loughborough area, you are closer to Toronto than Toronto is to Vancouver! Canada is the world’s second largest country and with just over 35 million people it has approximately half the UK popula on. The people ‐ as you can see there are not too many, but they are passionate about their country and proud to show you what it has to offer. You will hear the words ‘You are welcome’ not as a glib saying but one that comes right from the heart. Plus 2017 is the 150th anniversary of Canada becoming a country. What a great me to visit and, as part of the celebra ons, entry to all the Na onal Parks and Na onal Historic sites is free. Unique experiences that are purely Canadian have been put in a special collec on called Canada’s Signature Experiences: ac vi es such as sea plane trips, walking behind the Niagara Falls and tapping maple trees for the exquisitely sweet syrup. Want to know more? Call in at our offices next to the Granby Street car park. In true Canadian style the coffee pot is always on and you are more than welcome!

What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases in which the op c nerve is damaged by the pressure within the eye. There are two main types of glaucoma: chronic glaucoma, which happens slowly, and acute glaucoma which happens quickly. Chronic glaucoma is more common and for that reason I will be discussing this in more detail. Who is at risk of chronic glaucoma? Anyone can develop chronic glaucoma. The risk increases if you are: • Aged over 40 • Very short sighted • African or Caribbean origin • Closely related to someone with chronic glaucoma If one of your parents or children, or a sibling, has glaucoma and you are aged 40 or over, the NHS will pay for your eye examina on. How is chronic glaucoma detected? Because the early stages of chronic glaucoma do not cause symptoms, the best way to detect it is to have regular eye examina ons. There are three main types of tests to see if you have chronic glaucoma.
The first one is where your optometrist looks at the back of the eye using an ophthalmoscope, or a slit lamp. They may take a photograph or a scan of the nerve. This can be useful for future visits, to help them see if things have changed. The second test is where the optometrist measures the pressure inside your eye. This may be done by using a machine which gently blows a puff of air at your eye or by numbing your eye with drops and then gently pressing an instrument called a tonometer against it. The third test is where the optometrist tests how wide your visual field is – how far you can see around you when you are looking straight ahead. Some mes you can have chronic glaucoma even if you have normal eye pressure, which is why the optometrist carries out the other tests. What happens if I have chronic glaucoma? You will be given eye drops to use every day. They will help to reduce the pressure, which will help to manage the condi on. Vinesh Patel is Principal Op cian at Inter Eyecare Rothley House Prac ce

Fungal infec ons of Nails & Skin
Foot Care Services
The two main fungal infec ons in humans are Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis) and Onychomycosis in the nails. Athlete’s Foot affects the skin, mainly between the toes some mes spreading to the lower surface and around the side of the foot. What are the symptoms? With Athlete’s Foot, itching is common with the skin breaking down, so it becomes sore and open, o en spli ng between the toes – and small red spots can spread across the foot. Nail infec ons cause the nails to appear yellow or brown, becoming so and crumbly, usually thickening. How are they caught? Fungal spores are airborne so any communal area can be a source of infec on. Nails are only affected when trauma occurs – kicking a hard object or nails banging inside the shoes. What can you do? Keep feet dry, and rotate shoes daily. Wear good quality socks and shoes that fit! Treat Athletes Foot as soon as possible.

Reflexology Benefits Christmas is coming and although it’s exci ng it can also be very stressful. Doctors agree that over 85% of physical illnesses are caused by stress therefore it is important to make sure we do everything we can to deal with it. A er evalua ng 168 studies and 78 health disorders, Dr. Barbara and Dr. Kevin Kunz iden fied four primary ways that reflexology helps people: • Creates a relaxa on effect • Has an impact on organs • Improves symptoms • Reduces pain The details and mechanisms behind these four posi ve effects are s ll uncertain. Nonetheless, reflexology has been shown to be highly effec ve at helping the body manage health condi ons such as anxiety, stress, headache pain, PMS symptoms and sinusi s. It can also help to improve the quality of life in cancer pa ents, promote heart health and help with nerve and pain related condi ons in type 2 diabetes. If you haven’t tried reflexology before, why not treat yourself for Christmas? Or, if you are stuck for a Christmas present idea, how about giving a Reed Wellbeing Therapy Gi Voucher? Paula Reed

Step over the s le and cross this surprisingly busy road carefully. 6 Keep direc on le of the house, past the signpost and the wide wooden gate. The path goes straight on, along the edge of the playing field to where it appears to end at a junc on and a fence. Turn le , on this path passing right of the church and back to the road in Yarwell village. © Clive Brown All our walks are compiled by Clive Brown You can order any of his walking close to guides from www.walkingcloseto.com See his new book from Bradwell Books Walking for all Ages in Leicestershire & Rutland www.bradwellbooks.co.uk/walks‐for‐all‐ages‐leicestershire‐‐rutland‐581‐p.asp

Epidermoid Cysts and Milia Epidermoid cysts are smooth, round lumps filled with kera n - a fibrous protein - forming under the top layer of skin. Occurring anywhere on the body and varying in size, those removed using Advanced Electrolysis are most typically pea-sized or smaller. Milia are ny cysts most commonly found around the eyes and nose but can occur near the genitals. In infants they are o en called ‘milk spots’ and normally spontaneously resolve, but in adults they are unlikely to disappear and can be unsightly. Especially no ceable on dark skin, milia can be confused with whiteheads, promp ng a empts to squeeze them leading to soreness and scarring.
Appearance is generally improved immediately following removal as the area is fla ened in minutes. Within a day a dark scab forms and, once healed, there is o en no visual evidence of the blemish remaining.

And Another Thing... by Tom Hughes Follow Tom on Twi er @groomsdaybook
A er successfully nego a ng yet another treacherous evening commute home, my key slid smoothly into the front door as I effected ingress into my castle. Announcing my arrival upon the threshold with a booming, “I’m home!”, I awaited the warm embrace of the present Mrs Hughes. But rather than falling thankfully into my arms, she stood stock s ll and scanned every part of me. Every part that is, apart from my expectant fizzog. “Is it in the boot then?” “Is what in the boot?” The closing of the eyes and exhale of exaspera on told me that Yours Truly had forgo en something. “Tom! The package for Hannah’s project! I ordered it from eBay and it’s ready for collec on at the superstore!” How to recover from this catastrophic bout of misremembering? Without skipping a beat I adopted the Crouching Husband, Forgo en Present posi on: a slight bend of the knees, a click of the fingers, then a spin with a simultaneous point at the door. “Right! I’ll go immediately and pick it up.” “It doesn’t ma er, it can wait ‘ l morning. Your tea is ready.” A er a fine repast of stuffed peppers followed by yoghurt covered in some revol ng South American delicacy called cacao (the result of Sarah having unilaterally decided that we were on a health kick), I re red to the living room and whilst nodding off during our third stab at The Wire, I wondered at how fantas c logis cal solu ons had managed

to whisk this much needed item to our local superstore in the blink of an eye. My task was simplicity itself: all I had to do was rise early, divert to the shop before rush hour, collect said package and be on my way. Before the swearing from Bal more’s finest merged into one long mumble, I dropped off to sleep, imagining Hannah’s face as I returned with her much needed parcel. The next morning I pulled into the car park to be greeted by a vast throng of locals thrumming with nervous expecta on. Standing next to a fidgety woman s ll dressed in what appeared to be her pyjamas, I a empted to ascertain the cause of the log jam. Her mumbled reply explained nothing. “Listen, the big TVs are not worth the ba le. Just find something else, OK?” Was this person possibly a confused somnambulist? Undeterred, I pressed on. “Madam, I’m not here for a TV. I’m here for ‐ well I don’t know what I’m here for if I’m honest.” She gave me a quizzical look. “You sound like my Aun e Joan.” Before I could quite recover from my own double take, a great surge swept me off my feet as an unseen crowd that had congregated to my rear carried me to the now open doors of the superstore. In no me I was carried through the entrance where I found myself sprawled at the feet of a security guard with scuffed shoes and a frayed trouser hem. Using the belt of our Hired Protector for purchase I staggered to my feet and above the

maddening roar yelled into his ear, “I’m here to pick up a parcel.” Now happily restored back onto my hind legs, I looked into the guard’s terrified eyes. “Parcel? You’ll be lucky,” he said. “Why, what’s going on?” The guard pointed his finger and urged me to look over to a stand of TVs being overrun by what looked like a scene from World War 2. “It’s Black Friday!” As the guard shouted the words into my ear, I saw my pyjama‐clad friend atop a pile of humanity and Japanese technology triumphantly holding a massive screen above her head. As she tumbled backwards in slow mo on I decided that it was my cue to head for safety. Back at home, Sarah examined the large package lying at my feet. “What’s that?” “It’s a coffee machine.” “Why have you bought a coffee machine?” “Because it was reduced from £300 to £99.” “But you hate coffee.” “I know.” “So why did you buy it?” “I don’t really know.” “And where is Hannah’s package? And Tom, who gave you that black eye?”

Pets Page What To Consider When Hiring A Dog-Walker If you work full- me or simply need help to exercise your dog occasionally, you’ll need to look for a professional dog-walker. But how do you know that your beloved pet will be in safe hands? Here are a few things to consider: • Will your dog be walked by the same person each me? • Pet business insurance is a legal requirement for professional dog‐walkers. • Will the walker need access to your home? If so, you’ll probably want to ask them for references.
• They should also know how to administer first aid to the dogs if required. It’s also worth considering that if your dog has only ever experienced walks on its own with you, going out with other dogs could be threatening or upse ng. Pet business insurance It is impera ve that your dog‐walker has business liability insurance to cover any damage caused by your dog when they are out, or conversely,
anything that happens to your pet. This is actually a legal requirement for any pet business, and should cover damage to property as well as care of the animal. If you are out at work and the dog‐walker has access to the house, their insurance should also cover the loss or the of your keys. It is a good idea to go out with your dog and a poten al new walker if possible, if only to give you peace of mind that your pet will be in good hands. h p://blog.petplan.co.uk/05/20 15/advice/petplan-checklist/ what-ques ons-should-i-askmydog-walker-insurancecreden als-safetyand-more/

Go Everywhere under the Sun with Kia Betelgeuse - a thousand mes larger than the Sun
Known to genera ons of school kids as ‘Beetlejuice’, Betelgeuse is one of the largest stars known. If placed in the Solar System, it would consume the planets and asteroids all the way out to Jupiter. Almost a thousand mes wider than our Sun, Betelgeuse is a massive red giant ‐ a star close to the end of its life. It’s one of just a few stars to be imaged as a visible disc from Earth. Betelgeuse has suffered middle‐aged spread as frene c nuclear reac ons in the star’s core have forced its outer layers to swell and cool. The star also fluctuates slightly in brightness as it tries to get a grip on its billowing gases. Betelgeuse will exit the universe in a spectacular supernova explosion that will shine as brightly as our full moon, but it’s not likely to be any me soon.
