The Dangers of Driving in the Dark
by Mohammed Bhojani
There are many reasons why we take driving our cars for granted in our everyday lives: ge ng to work, dropping the kids at school, going to the shops or just driving for fun. When the evenings are darker your vision is of even greater importance when driving. Many drivers, both young and old, can find the glare of some of the newer headlights nothing short of blinding... However, a recent survey of 1000 drivers found that 26% had not had their eyes examined in the previous 2 years. 3% of them ‐ the equivalent of more than 1 million UK drivers ‐ had NEVER had their eyes tested! Addi onally I in 4 people over the age of 40 drive knowing that their vision is below the driving test standard. Following ‘Cassie’s Law’ police are now carrying out checks and failure can mean a fine and immediate revoca on of your driving licence. 6000 such drivers had their licence revoked last year as it was felt their car was effec vely a ‘weapon of mass destruc on’ due to problems with their eye sight. Over 3000 casual es occurred in the UK last year alone due to drivers having poor eye sight. Road accidents cost the UK over £33 million per year. Page 6
Optometrist Mohammed Bhojani explained: “The change of season brings a change to the level of daylight we experience and as we use different parts of our eyes to see at different light levels, our vision levels can drop significantly in darkness. Your vision is essen al for safe driving, not just for other road users but for the safety of your own family too. Good vision makes accidents avoidable. A 30 minute eye exam will give you peace of mind and our eye test will not just test your vision but it can also find other heath related problems. If there are issues with glare and night driving, the solu on can o en be appropriately prescribed glasses with the correct type of lenses.” Mohammed Bhojani BSc (Hons) MC Optom MBA FRSA is principal optometrist and contact lens specialist at Visual Answers Optometrists 22 High St. Quorn LE12 8DT and 28 High St. Barrow Upon Soar LE12 8PY (Tel: 414151 & 416800) www.VisualAnswers.co.uk

Local, experienced and reliable… Thirty years ago Richard Watson le Southfields College in Leicester a er serving his appren ceship as a painter and decorator. He came to see me at home recently and showed me his file of references for jobs he’d done since he started out on his own in 1997. There were dozens of them, mostly handwri en and all praising his work; there were photos too, of large detached houses, small terraced ones, before and a ers, exteriors and interiors and there were even a couple of photos of a canal boat he’d painted ‐ pictured here. Now, I have had first hand experience of Richard’s skill in applying gloss paint ‐ he
painted our front door last year and I defy anyone to find a be er example of a perfect finish. Leicestershire born and bred, he’s a family man with two grown up sons. He’s also a keen vegetable gardener in his spare me when he’s not helping out with local ma ers. He’s a member of the Painters and Decorators Associa on ‐ this means that Richard is bound by a 12 point code of prac ce and a set of exac ng standards. For example: ‘Members of the Associa on shall at all mes so order their conduct as to uphold the integrity of the Associa on, and to carry out work in accordance with good prac ce and recognised standards of the pain ng and decora ng industry and pay
High Gloss Finish: an example of Richard’s work
par cular regard to the maintenance and observance of this Code.’ The code also states that a member shall quote a fair price, in wri ng, and will honour all quoted commitments. You can’t say fairer than that!

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs...
something different or extra, we find we lose impetus and mo va on and don’t achieve what was desired.
You’ve probably heard our na on’s favourite poem umpteen mes. But can you remember when you first heard it? The first me it made sense? It describes all that’s needed in order to be the person we’re expected to be and o en at New Year we realise that we’ve s ll some way to go before we measure up to such lo y expecta ons. We take stock, resolve to change bad habits, go on a diet, join the gym and so on; but all too o en we forget the most important part of us ‐ how it will affect our emo onal wellbeing ‐ we try to change what we do without changing our minds. There are so many parts in play in all we do, that in trying to change ourselves just by doing
Help is at hand. Sally Deller at Leicester Reiki is a prac oner of the three most effec ve therapies that help you succeed in personal change and improvement: Reiki Healing unblocks the energy inside you, Emo onal Freedom Technique (EFT) frees you from your resistance and Neuro Linguis c Programming (NLP) helps you dovetail all your strengths so that you are perfectly placed to succeed in your life’s choices.
Reduce Stress – bring calm and tranquillity to your busy life. Treat yourself to a Reiki session to promote emotional and physical wellbeing and encourage relaxation. Overcome Fears and Phobias – tap them away! Try EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) or ‘tapping’ to rid yourself of those irrational, but real, fears. Enhance your personal development – try NLP. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) is a great tool to help you develop and boost your confidence as well as make you an effective communicator. Leicester Reiki offers all of the above therapies either in your own home (within 25 miles of LE12) or at The Attic, 68 High Street, Barrow on Soar (above Indigo Hair Design), or at Wymeswold Pharmacy. Upstairs Downstairs In 1997 two experienced cabinetmakers, Darren Raithby and Andrew Harvey, started a business called Fine Finish Furniture and they now have two floors of display kitchens and furniture overlooking their factory... Darren and Andrew had no ced that customers of many companies boas ng high quality kitchens or furniture were o en not happy with the finished result. They saw an opportunity to combine the best of both worlds: use their skills as cra smen to source high quality stockist items at affordable prices and manufacture bespoke items to fulfil a customer’s specific needs. They are now one of the region’s largest suppliers of Second Nature Kitchens and by merging that with their own skills and experience in carpentry and bespoke cabinet making, they are able to really sa sfy a much larger sector of the market. “Fine Finish Furniture is a retailer and a manufacturer. We stock par cular ranges which can be viewed at our showroom, in Bunny, No nghamshire, or online with the added advantage of downloading a brochure. If, however, you see a piece in a par cular style but would like a smaller or larger version, we can create that to your specifica ons. You really do get the best of all worlds here. It’s o en not possible to fill those awkward corners in a kitchen with something off the shelf. In these instances we can design the perfect solu on just for that space alone, and we’ll match it perfectly with the rest of your choice of kitchen. We design your kitchen with you. There’s no middleman to speak to, you speak to the tradesmen directly, which means we can take on requests first hand and inspire you with ideas and advice for the best possible finish. And it’s not just kitchens here either. We have a large range of classic and contemporary designed furniture both freestanding or fi ed that will add style to any home. Fine Finish Furniture has been successfully providing the East Midlands with the highest quality furniture for the past 15 years, and the business grows year on year. Page 22
If you are looking for quality furniture at an affordable price, Fine Finish Furniture is your first choice.” You’ll find loads of ideas when you visit their showroom ‐ just 8 miles along the A60 out of Loughborough towards No ngham. There’s plenty of room for parking too!

How to Find the Planets
Look South at 10 pm mid month; take an hour off if it’s the beginning of the month or add an hour on if it’s the end. Jan: Jupiter is to the le (East) of centre sky in Gemini Mars rises just before midnight. Saturn Rises at 3am
Feb: Jupiter is to the right (West) of centre sky Venus rises two hours before the Sun March: Jupiter is further to the right (West) of centre sky and is the brightest object for most of the night un l... Venus rises at 4.30am and takes over as brightest object in the sky.
Orion: Looking south at 10pm on the 13th January Orion is posi oned just below the waxing, nearly full moon. By mid February it will have moved westward by half the distance towards your western horizon, and by mid March at 10pm it will almost be se ng in the west.
The uppermost star in Orion is called Betelgeuse. Below is a photograph of Betelgeuse taken from the Hubble Space Telescope. The small white circle describes the area our own earth encompasses in its orbit around our sun. The larger white circle describes the orbit of Jupiter. Betelgeuse is so massive it would not fit in the area of Jupiter’s orbit.
The comet that nearly was! Sungrazing Comet ISON (C/2012 S1) was to be the comet of the century, but as it made its closest approach to the Sun on November 28th, like Icarus, it melted. Although a part of it unexpectedly survived, it faded fast, and is not visible to the naked eye. It passed within 724,000 miles of the sun's surface when it reached perihelion (the point when it is at its closest to the sun). ISON was only a few miles in diameter and reached a maximum speed rela ve to Earth of 845,000mph. The sun's rays heated the ball of ice, metal and rock to 2,760C making it visible to the naked eye as the evaporated debris formed its tail. We had hoped for a great spectacle in the winter sky, but we will now, it seems, have to wait for another large comet to come along.

What is Self Healing? Self healing is anything you do to help you achieve harmony and balance, whether it is on a physical, mental, emotional or spiritual level... Most of us already do some self healing activities such as take a holiday, soak in the bath, play sport, go for a walk, do crosswords, etc. However, with increasing daily stresses of life leaving us little time or energy, is it any wonder that we become ill? Then we have to slow down, maybe visit the doctor and take medication and/or time off work. Often that’s when we take stock and decide we’re going to change our lifestyle, improve our diet or do more exercise; and for a while we do, but usually we slip back into old habits. So, why not try complementary therapy as a way of taking care of yourself? Just one hour a month can make you feel so good and have a very positive effect on your health. The treatments are enjoyable, stress-relieving and work on all levels not just the physical. If you haven’t yet tried it New Year is the perfect time... Paula Reed: www.reedwellbeing.co.uk

Avoiding Co-Ownership Problems For many, a property is the most expensive purchase they will ever make and, for understandable reasons, people are keen to get on to, and then move up, the property ladder. This keenness can have a downside however; problems can arise if a couple did not specify at the me of purchase what should happen in the event of a breakdown in the rela onship.
Declara on of Trust (a document se ng out who owns what share) was not signed at the me of purchase, the assump on will be that the property is owned equally. A poten al solu on, given the right circumstances, is for the person who made the greater contribu on to apply to the court for a declara on that they are, in fact, en tled to more than simply an equal share of the equity.
Whilst those problems may be significant, that does not mean they cannot be overcome. One problem that commonly arises is where the par es made unequal contribu ons to the costs of purchasing the property; if a
Another problem that can arise relates to what is to happen to the property. It is not unusual for someone to have contributed to a purchase using the proceeds from a previous sale. To be able to buy another property, it may be
necessary to extract that contribu on. If both par es agree to a sale, then there may be no difficulty. However if one of them objects, it can be problema c for the other. Fortunately, there is scope for the person keen to sell to apply to the court for an order compelling the other to co‐ operate with the sale process. The law rela ng to property co‐ ownership is by no means simple or straigh orward; if you would like advice or assistance regarding your situa on, please contact: Nick Gay n.gay@moss-solicitors.co.uk, or Laura Anderson l.anderson@moss-solicitors.co.uk

Photography Tips by Rebecca Soanes Winter is the Best! At the me of wri ng the weather forecast is predic ng snow and as a photographer I feel excited by all the new photographic opportuni es this will bring my way... I love all the seasons but there are lots of reasons why I say winter is the best. First there is the quality of the light, due to the angle of the sun and the horizon being smaller in winter. As a result the sun lights up our subject in a much more pleasing way and the shadows will be long and deep. Another reason is the extension of the ‘golden’ hours in winter. The first and last hour of the day as the sun rises and sets, each become more like a magical
hour and a half; extra me to capture the light which is so er and warmer in colour. Then there is the beauty of snow ‐ I’ve always loved the way winter puts a pure white blanket over a landscape, changing it drama cally, and who doesn’t like to be the first to walk upon it? Frost can be just as beau ful, see the way it gives defini on and shape to a subject as nothing else can do ‐ pictured here are the rings of a tree stump defined by frost and hoar frost on hedges and trees. A few ps for winter:1. Camera ba eries lose their charge quicker in the cold, so always carry a spare and keep
it in your pocket rather than a bag. 2. I invariably find I stay outside longer than I intended to, so I always allow for this by wearing many layers as well as a hat and gloves. 3. Look out for ways that frost has added defini on to what’s around you, not forge ng to look at the frozen floor under your feet. The eye drawing paths men oned in previous edi ons will o en look more defined by frost and snow too. I’ll cover this in more detail in a future ar cle; it just seemed a shame not to men on first the wonderful opportuni es winter can bring...

“Right Away!”
...shouts Mick Pickering, fireman for the 1.15 to Leicester North on Saturday 14th January 2006, giving me, Steve Johns, driver of the Steam Locomo ve Class 04 Number 63601, the cue to ease off the vacuum brake and open the steam regulator one nudge at a me. The hundred plus ton engine slowly pulls away from number one pla orm at Loughborough's Great Central Sta on and white smoke and steam swirl all around as we rumble beneath the Great Central Road bridge. Bystanders wave farewell as we disappear southwards, gathering speed now as I open up the regulator under the expert guidance of Fred Franklin, one of the heritage railways most senior drivers. For as long as I can remember I’d harboured this dream which had now come true by way of the most wonderful Christmas present ‐ a Driver Experience Day on the Great Central Railway.
Page 42
In my youth I had travelled the length and breadth of England, seeking out as many railway engines as possible, underlining their numbers in my Ian Allan combined volume as soon as I spo ed one not seen before. In the 1960s, sta ons always had a following of young train spo ers and many a Saturday I’d count myself among their number. Grantham, Newark and Doncaster were favourites, with the Gresley Pacifics o en steaming through at over ninety miles per hour. So it is not beyond the realms of possibility that 63601 and I could have had a brief encounter back then, that grand old engine having spent some of its life on part of the LNER and having a home at Doncaster Locomo ve Shed for a year or two. As we coast into Quorn & Woodhouse sta on, with its island pla orm layout, it is busy with passengers and sightseers. The sta on master greets us with a cheery smile, passing a comment to Fred about
the business of the day and of course the typically English damp winter weather. But as a lover of steam on rails, I have found that the weather has li le effect on the level of enjoyment. In sunshine the engines gleam, in snow the steam billows high. Wet wheels slipping on greasy rails add excitement to the soundtrack and bid the driver to take be er care, while mist mul plies the steam adding a sense of mystery which allows you to imagine you could be anywhere. In the league table of pas mes nothing engages all the senses so completely: the smell and taste of smoke and steam, the sights of the countryside and shining steel rails stretching out before you, the feel of metal both hot and cold ‐ the blinding heat and light from the firebox furnace, the taste of tea from an enamel mug, the ra le and rumble on the footplate, shovel scraping coal, the speed and the clickety‐clack of giant wheels on metal rails. The guard’s whistle and the engine’s shrill reply announce our departure, and off we go again, the clank of the signal closing the way behind us as the sta on dwindles and disappears. And so the day unfolded, adding to this unquenchable love of steam I’ve had since I was a boy. And as one thing leads to another, a couple of years ago I signed on as a volunteer and I’m to begin training as a fireman in the new year ‐ who knows where that will take me...
