Soar Valley Life A Host of Golden Daffodils... Every March 1st, St David’s day and Steve’s Mum’s birthday, we expect to see our first daffodil of the season. But today, 24th of February, it’s looking like the first one to show will be late this year. Sutton Bonington This was painted after my first visit to Sutton Bonington. I had been invited to drop work off at The Gallery and as I looked up the main street I was struck by the beauty of the village. I have lived in Australia for a few years where I missed the architecture of the UK and this was an ideal village scene that I would have imagined as I was sitting under my tin roof in 40 degree heat! Beautiful timber beamed houses and leaning brick buildings all forming a perfect subject to paint. It can now be seen at The Gallery along with other pieces. Ruth Gray www.ruthgrayimages.net

William Wordsworth was inspired to write his famous poem a er a walk around Glencoyne Bay, Ullswater, in the Lake District, with his sister Dorothy in 1802. Although it took him another 5 years to publish it! Today is deadline day for us and it would be a fine thing right at this moment to be wandering lonely as a cloud in peace and solitude our hearts being with pleasure filled. Oh what bliss it would be to gaze in such jocund company. Deadline days at Soar Valley Towers offer li le tranquillity as we cajole and persuade our busy adver sers and feature writers to part with their copy, or last minute sugges ons. This month, on this last a ernoon, we lost and found a page a er a feature we wrote proved to be too revealing and we had to pull it at the last minute. Then an email came in asking if we could find a page to promote the Melton Mowbray ar san cheese fair. Then another regular adver ser asked if we could split their advert in two and put the two halves on separate pages. The final day’s tasks stretch in a neverending line un l it all miraculously assembles and we can send it away to our brilliant graphic designer to put it all in order ready for the printers. So off we go onto our couch to lie, and we’ll see you in our 4th year dancing with daffodils...

The Daffodil (Narcissus) For me these cheery blooms really do break the spell of winter. Long celebrated in art and culture, the daffodil is at its best planted in huge dri s. Most of us don't have space for that, but every garden should make room for a small group to li the spirit. There are thousands of cul vars to choose from. For a small
garden it’s hard to beat the charm of the miniature form ‘TêteàTête” which are easy to grow and very long living. Or for something a li le different in a larger plot try ‘Thalia’ an old pure white variety that smells deligh ul. Whichever variety you grow don’t be tempted to cut back or dy the foliage a er flowering as this will interfere with the bulbs ability to store energy for the following year’s flowers. Claire Jones

25 local businesses and organisa ons were represented and this provided a great networking opportunity for Shepshed businesses. We took advantage of the halfterm holiday to hold the Fair at Shepshed High. I was delighted to be able to invite Malcolm Heaven, a local Business in the Community connector and the former Loughborough BID Chairman, Roger Perre , to 10 Downing Street recently. The Prime Minister had asked MPs to nominate local community champions to a end a recep on and I was very pleased to be able to introduce Malcolm and Roger to David Cameron. They had a chance to tell him about their work in Loughborough. I was pleased to host recently our Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership at an event held in the House of Commons to celebrate the grants they have allocated under the Regional Growth Fund. The LLEP have spent £20m across 196 businesses, crea ng or safeguarding nearly 2,900 jobs and levering in £106million of private funding. Having met the Fire Minister with other Leicestershire MPs in December to discuss proposals to remove a fire engine from Loughborough sta on and then having met the FBU and signed a le er with other Leicester and Leicestershire MPs to ask for more informa on about the Fire Service’s proposals I was pleased to hear that the Combined Fire Authority have not approved the planned changes. More me is needed to look at the figures and ensure we have confidence in future proposals. The Prime Minister and Chancellor have been in the Midlands to announce a six point plan to make the Midlands the “Engine for Growth” in the UK. The plan focuses on jobs, skills, transport, science, and quality of life. In the course of this Parliament we have seen significant Government investment in Leicester and Leicestershire via, for example, the City Deal, the Midland Mainline electrifica on, in MIRA and in many other parts of our city and county. Ma hew O’Callaghan – Labour Parliamentary Candidate
I’m about as local as you can get. I went to school in Ashby, worked for Fisons in Loughborough and have lived in Wymeswold in the Loughborough Cons tuency. That’s why for the last three and a half years I have been knocking on doors in Loughborough, Shepshed and the villages to find out the real issues that affect local people. I will have spoken to around 10,000 by the me of the General Elec on. What does impress me is how much ac vity goes on in our villages – the whole range of community groups and socie es that relies on volunteers – the unsung heroes of village life. Unfortunately neither the Government nor the Council recognise how important these volunteers are and much of their funding has been cut. This, along with the County’s proposals to offload 36 village libraries will have a devasta ng effect on villages across the Cons tuency. No two villages are the same; the problems in one are different in another. There are a few themes that emerge, for example the amount of new building being forced into villages, o en onto Greenfield sites without any regard to adequate road infrastructure or their impact on the local GP surgery, school class sizes, etc. Labour will ensure that the voice of the local community is properly heard in future; planning applica ons and villages will be able to make their own plans as to how their community should develop. Yes, we do need more houses but the right type of houses in the right places; for example small units for young local families, or elderly people downsizing, who want to remain in the village. Talking of young families, we will provide addi onal childcare for preschool children (25 hours) and from 8am to 6pm for older children at the local primary school. We will improve access to GP surgeries so that you get to see a GP within 48 hours. The NHS will remain a funding priority for an incoming Labour Government. What we also need to work on is improved access to bus services so people can get to a surgery easily. To contact me call 07894 229499, email ma hewocall@gmail.com or write to 21 Fennel Street, Loughborough. LE11 1UQ www.ma hewocallaghan.co.uk

More Changes for Parents 2014 saw a number of significant changes which seek to “modernise” the family law system; the focus of the changes is to assist families to agree arrangements for their child or children pu ng the child first and if possible to do so outside of the court system. A endance at media on is now compulsory before a person can make an applica on to the court. A referral is made individually or through solicitors to an accredited mediator who will arrange a Media on Informa on and Assessment Mee ng (MIAM) with both par es either together or separately. At that mee ng, informa on will be provided about the ways the dispute can be resolved without going to court. If the case is suitable for media on a
further joint mee ng will be arranged for the par es to seek to resolve their dispute. Unfortunately, not everything can be resolved out of court and an applica on to the Family Court will be necessary. Terminology used within the Family Court has changed; Residence orders (formerly custody) and Contact Orders (formerly access) have been replaced with Child Arrangement Orders. A Child Arrangement Order means an order regula ng the arrangements rela ng to any of the following: a) With whom a child is to live, spend me or otherwise have contact, and b) When a child is to live, spend me or otherwise have contact with any person.
Within a Child Arrangement Order, the care of the child can be shared between the parents or the child can live with one parent and have contact with the other. The paramount considera on in every case is the child or children's welfare. The wishes and feelings of the child or children are always considered and are par cularly taken into account for older children. Thinking of a new kitchen? ...then come and see the louis difference* louis kitchens are different - they are simple, they are unpretentious and they have ‘timelessness’ at the heart of their design and creation.
*louis kitchens have painted cabinets, tiled plinths, solid surface
worktops and stone floors - a ‘design mix’ that largely eliminates synthetic materials and offers lasting quality and easy maintenance.
Find out the true potential for your kitchen - call 01530 215034 to arrange a free design consultation.

The inspiration behind the creation of the ‘louis concept’ has been distilled from more than 30 years experience in kitchen design and manufacture.

Visit a high street op cian these days and you’ll o en be a ended to by a number of different members of staff. These individuals interpret and dispense your prescrip on. They’ll discuss what lenses are most suitable for your lifestyle. It’s likely then, that you’ll be handed over to a junior team member to help you choose your new frames.

Clearly, with the high costs involved in running prime loca on premises, any business has to look for the most efficient working prac ces to maximise the revenue earned from their highest paid staff. KEITH URRY & SON High Class Painting & Decorating Since 1995
Visi ng Keith Urry at his house in Kingston on Soar, I wasn’t at all surprised to find a neat and tastefully decorated home. We sat at the kitchen table and cha ed over a cup of coffee. Keith’s son Joe, having recently completed his appren ceship, has now joined the growing family business. I made notes as the family cat, now on the table too, nudged my pen with its head. As I admired a stunning framed print on the wall, Keith said, “I took that last year on holiday in India. I was up early and had wandered along the river side. The light was perfect and a heat haze defocussing the mid distance allowed me to no ce the foreground more keenly.” I have a no on that to capture a photograph as good as that requires similar talents to a high class painter and decorator. The right tools, the know how and that keen eye for detail that makes all the difference between good and outstanding...

New Lenses that Protect your Eyes from the BlueLight Threat of Digital Devices New US research shows that nearly 95% of us spend over 2 hours per day on digital devices. Evidence points to a link between exposure to blue light and macular degenera on and cataracts. Findings show people are vulnerable to exposure to dangerous bluelight from backlit displays of smart phones, screens, LED and fluorescent lights and sunlight. ‘On average we look at our phones over 100 mes a day. 1 in 4 children use digital devices more than 3 hours a day, yet most of us are not aware how the constant use of technology impacts on eye comfort, headaches & even sleep quality,’ says Mohammed Bhojani, Optometrist at Visual Answers. ‘Fortunately, lens technology can now reduce eyestrain from digital devices. French research found these lenses block 20% of bad bluelight, reducing cell death at the back of the eyes by 25% preven ng premature eye ageing; they also affect sleep pa erns too.’ Bluelight blocking lenses are now available at Visual Answers & cost an addi onal £70 per pair. They also come with an glare, UV protec on & 2 year an scratch guarantee as standard. For more informa on call Visual Answers on Quorn (01509) 414151 or Barrow (01509) 416800.

Again the Grass Grows Mar n and Michelle Williams have been running their award winning GreenThumb Lawn Service franchise for over 15 years... They now have over 7,000 sa sfied customers and a team of highly trained and friendly opera ves who visit customers on a regular basis to apply seasonal treatments to their lawns. Prices start from only £15 per treatment. New customers are surprised at how li le GreenThumb lawn treatments cost – o en less than trea ng the lawn themselves. Many customers opt for lawn treatment packages, payable by monthly direct debit. These programmes offer greater service and flexibility which rivals are unable to provide. The Bri sh weather will remain unpredictable, but what we can say for sure is that many lawns will be ready for some TLC come the Spring. A er a Winter of mixed weather, lawns will soon start to look
A lush green lawn is a lot easier when you know how yellow, sparse and very mossy. GreenThumb’s treatments provide the lush, green, weed free lawn that you have always wanted.
• When the grass growing season is properly underway, mow the lawn at least once an week.
Spring Lawn Care Tips:
• NEVER cut the grass shorter than one inch.
• Make sure that your mower has been serviced and that the blades are sharp.
• Apply a Spring blend, nitrogen rich feed to the lawns.
• When you give your lawn the first cut of the season aim to remove only the top third of growth. Remove too much all in one go and the grass will look very yellow.
• Spray weeds with a product which is recommended for use on grass – some weed killers will get rid of everything – including your lawn! If you would like GreenThumb to take care of feeding, weeding and moss control for you, then why not contact them for a no obliga on, FREE lawn analysis?

Too proud to admit you need help?
FREE,
As a qualified nurse of 25 years, and having run Absolute Care for three years now, I’ve no ced that people find it really difficult to accept help...
no obligation homecare needs assessment in your own home
It could be agerelated, or are they afraid of losing their independence thinking it’s the first step towards residen al care? Maybe they think they can’t afford help, or that it won’t be very good let’s face it, there’s a lot of bad press out there. Or could it be that people are just too proud to admit they need help? Therefore one of the most important aspects of my role is helping people overcome their anxie es and the good news is that once they try it they soon realise that just a li le help can make all the difference. It can help them stay independent, provide a focal point for their day and even help them regain lost skills. It can introduce new friends and provide opportuni es to reintegrate with the community. And family members also feel reassured that their loved ones are receiving support.

A Deliciously Different Dream So, this was the dream: To own a deli, selling good quality local produce and the finest imported foods from across Europe and a chillout café where people could drop in to drink coffee, read newspapers, watch the world go by or tuck into a reasonably priced lunch cooked by himself Laurent, the resident French chef… With 30 minutes to kill at a li le a er 1 pm, I found myself outside the Delice Deli Café on Baxter Gate, Loughborough. It was almost full, but not crowded. Amidst a happy buzz of cha er I sat down at the last available table and began to read a broadsheet yes, there’s room enough for that. My bague e arrived in minutes. So in the middle, slightly crunchy on the surface, with succulent ham and delicious freshly made coleslaw and salad, my lunch had that should I say je ne sais quoi? Go for a stroll along Southport Pier?” “You know how to spoil a girl, don’t you?” “Come on, grab your coat, be er take an extra layer, best take an umbrella too.” “Anything else?” “A flask of Bovril? Oh and a woolly hat.” In no me at all the Mondeo Ghia was within striking distance of the classiest seaside town north of Liverpool (and south of Blackpool). I parked up on the coast road and a er leaping acroba cally to catch my airborne umbrella, shouted over to Sarah. “Have you got any change for the machine?” “What!? The wind, I can’t” She shook her head, no change. No ma er we could pay via mobile phone. Thirty minutes later I was in the newsagents changing a five pound note.
Page 42
“You can pay by mobile mate.” “Unfortunately I failed my computer programming Alevel, so can I have five pound coins please?” At last, we were ready to explore. “So you see, the design of this street, with its wide thoroughfare, is just like the boulevards of Paris. It is said that Napoleon III lodged just off Lord Street, in 1834 I believe, and that gave him the idea”
She took my hand in hers which was of course the signal for me to start giggling. “I would say that you are quite a happygolucky person. Always smiling.” “Well fancy you knowing that?” I beamed. “Now, you haven’t got a younger brother have you?” “No.” “Older sister?”
“Tom, as fascina ng as this is, can we just get out of the rain?”
“No. I have a younger sister and an older brother.”
“Here let’s go down this side alley and get our fortune told.”
“Yes I thought so.” Well done Madame Sylvia, right on the money again! Leaving Madame Sylvia’s armed with the knowledge that my fortune was on its way, I met Sarah coming out of the shoe shop.
“I’ll tell you what Tom, you go and get your fortune told, I’m going into Russell & Bromleys.” Refusing to be dissuaded, I popped my head through the beads hanging across the door and sat down in Madame Sylvia’s bijou front parlour, with Olly sat quietly on my knee.
Eventually, we ba led our way across the coast road and found our way to Southport Pier. “Tom look at it, it’s shee ng down.”

home. I made a dash for the train but it had already gone.
And there, coming into the ny sta on on the shortest bit of track known to man, was a real live proper train.
“Sorry sir, no dogs in the cafe.”
“Blast! What me is the next one?”
“Is this the right train for the end of Southport Pier?” The exhausted driver looked at me like he hadn’t heard that joke for hours. “Ninety pence please.” At the other end of this pile of Victorian Iron we discovered a seedy amusement arcade and ta y cafe which had been refurbished completely and replaced with, er, a ta y cafe and seedy amusement arcade. We decided to sit out the storm with a restora ve cuppa. Unfortunately, a stroppy li le
We all looked down at Olly, now soaked and shivering with the cold. “It’s OK, he’s a guide dog.” The li le Jobsworth’s eyes narrowed.
“I’m not sure but I think I can see it now, you know that one there, at other end of this pier?”
“Well where’s his harness and tunic?”
We returned to our Mondeo Ghia only to find a nice shiny yellow parking cket stuck onto the windscreen.
“It’s his day off.”
“I thought you bought one?”
“His day off?”
“I thought you paid by mobile?”
“Yes. Do you wear that tunic on your day off?”
And the moral of this story?
“Er, no.” “Well neither does he, now excuse us.” A er our greasy Eccles cake and stewed tea we decided to head

Blood Spots These bright red blemishes, also known as Cherry Angioma or Campbell de Morgan Spots, do not blanch when pressure is applied. They are caused by leaking blood vessels under the skin and while most are flat to the surface of the skin, larger ones can be domed and can even feel quite fibrous to the touch. More common in men than women and tending to increase with age, they can occur anywhere on the body though
they are most commonly found on the torso. Younger people can also have them and teenagers may find them par cularly embarrassing as they can be very obvious on younger, fairer skin. Small ones can be amazingly easy to remove, using advanced electrolysis, as a single leaking capillary can be treated in a ma er of seconds. Larger ones can take a li le longer but the blemish is normally completely removed with a single treatment. Pennie Blatchford

Life Proof Flooring
Where ever we walk we leave our mark, but when we consider floor coverings inside our homes and work places we have to balance hard wearing with comfort... Mary and I first met Robert Newbold, Director of Robert Newbold and Sons of Shepshed, at the Abbeyfield Wes ield House Care Home Open Day back in March of last year. Also among the many guests were Soar Valley Life’s photographer Bill Allsopp, Judy Andrews and Caroline Thompson of Acacia Curtains and Blinds and the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire Lady Jennifer Gre on JP. Abbeyfield had been extended and refurbished and everyone involved had been invited to see the finished results and to celebrate the work of this excellent, charity funded, flagship demen a care home. Now, the floor covering in a place such as this really has to be absolutely fit for purpose, as I expect you can imagine. Robert’s team of expert fi ers had laid more than 2,000 square feet of Karndean flooring in me for the Open Day.
Page 46
Robert explained, “For a job like the one we did at Abbeyfield you need to know just what you are doing and have enough people to get it done. We had to work around the daily running of this busy home, which is o en the case, domes c or commercial. But it’s very sa sfying to see it when it’s finished.
firm is Charlo e, Robert’s busy wife, keeping everything ship shape and in order back at the shop.
“My Dad started the company, working from home, nearly thirty years ago. We used to have rolls of carpet leaning against the stairs and my brother James and I would slide down them. “I worked with my Dad since leaving school and my 17 year old son Jack works for us now too, so we really are a family business. Sadly my Dad passed away a couple of years ago and we had to take over. But luckily, having grown up with the business, James and I knew what to do and Dad le the business in great shape.” The brothers also employ 3 other skilled fi ers full me, Ashley Fisher, Brian Burns and Damien Rush, so they can cope with any job that comes in, no ma er how large or small. And the last, but not least, member of the family

Are you drinking enough? Did you know that one of the first signs of dehydra on is feeling red or exhausted?
That’s right – not drinking enough water could be the reason your energy levels are low and you feel exhausted. Because our bodies are made up of mostly water, even small dips in H2O levels are enough to affect your metabolism. Other symptoms include dizziness or lightheadedness, headaches, dry mouth, lips, eyes and skin. If dehydra on is ongoing (chronic) it can affect your kidney func on and cause kidney stones to develop. It can also lead to liver, joint and muscle damage, cholesterol problems and cons pa on. Stay hydrated by making sure you’re drinking enough water and other fluids throughout the day. The Ins tute of Medicine suggests about 9 cups of fluids a day for women and 13 cups for men. You will need to increase this if you are on a strenuous exercise regime. If that sounds like a lot, remember that many foods, like fruits and vegetables, contain water as well. Why not try drinking more water for a week and see how much be er you feel? Paula Reed

Helping Others to Help Themselves
This group is inspired by life and the focus afforded it, because their lives, or the lives of loved ones, have had their very existence challenged by what is perhaps the biggest threat to health a human being has to face... As we get older many of us have to face the prospect of cancer and either oneself or someone close to us will hear those dreaded words. Today’s message from the media tells us that we are bea ng it with more of us surviving longer a er cancer. Paula Reed of Reed Wellbeing, who helps with the Cancer Self Help Group Loughborough, told me how they help everyone and anyone who comes to them. The group is formed from, and run by, cancer survivors. The founder herself has survived more than thirty years since first diagnosis and is now in her 80s. Is it me to really believe that a posi ve mind can make a difference? Maybe it is this that makes the difference for those who survive this curse of our mes. Remember ‘Rice’ – Rest and ice Sports injuries, strains, sprains and even flare ups of arthri c joints o en respond well to self care by res ng the injured muscle or joint whilst using ice to keep swelling to a minimum. A firm support bandage can reduce swelling but shouldn't cause bulging above or below the bandage; if this happens it is too ght and should be removed. Keep the injured part elevated; an ankle should be propped higher than the knee and hip and a hand supported up to the shoulder. Also keep moving the joint gently with pain free movement. People o en ask if it's ice or heat they should use. The general rule is to use ice (if tolerated) for the first 72 hours or if the area feels hot and inflamed. A er that, or for more chronic injuries, heat can help reduce muscle spasm and give more relief. If within five to seven days things are not returning to normal, you may require an assessment to see if any hands on treatment or exercises are needed. Some mes an injury gets stuck during the healing process and the sooner it is assessed the be er. Claire Lidstone

solar eclipse in March For about 2 hours on March the 20th the Soar Valley will experience a partial eclipse of the sun. Throughout Britain most of the sun will be covered up as the moon passes directly in front of it. The event starts at 8.34 am and the maximum eclipse for us is at 9.34am and will last for 2 minutes and 47 seconds. Everything returns to normal at 10.45 am. At maximum we’ll experience approximately 85% darkness. The Faroe Islands, half way between Scotland’s North coast and Iceland, will experience a total eclipse. A total solar eclipse is actually an astronomical coincidence. Our sun is 400 times larger than our moon but is 400 times further away, so here on earth they appear almost the same size. Expect to see the sky darken considerably and be prepared to experience dampness and chill. This will be the largest partial eclipse to be visible from anywhere in the British Isles since 11 August 1999. There won't be another partial solar eclipse of this magnitude until 12 August 2026, so observers in the British Isles should make the most of the March 2015 event. To view a solar eclipse safely you can buy a solar viewer from the British Astronomical Association for £1.75 including P & P go to: www.britastro.org/product/1186

April: venus is speeding upwards through Taurus, passing the Pleiades (Seven Sisters) on 11th April. The Evening Star grows steadily brighter to reach mag - 4.0 by the end of April, when it’s setting after midnight. Jupiter is putting on a rival show in the south although fainter at mag - 2.1. Mars slips away at dusk and is gone by April’s end. Mercury is at mag - 1.1 by 22nd of the month and is easy to spot next to Pleiades by the 30th. saturn rises at 11.30 pm and is the brightest object (pale yellow) in the constellation of Scorpius.
May: venus moves ever closer to Jupiter during May; they have a cosmic encounter and are almost together on June 30th. venus hangs like a lantern in the western sky after sunset, setting at half past midnight. Jupiter is the second brightest object after the moon and is about an hour and a half behind on the ecliptic, setting at 2 am. On May 1st look on the north western horizon at about 10 pm and you may spot Mercury just to the left of the Pleiades. saturn is low in the sky and is outshone by its siblings and the twilight this month but is visible through a telescope in Scorpius.

Conveying Movement in S ll Pictures There are many ways of conveying movement, here are just three example shots taken over two days... Picture 1 was taken with a focal length of 320mm and a shu er speed of 1/640 sec. The fast shu er speed freezes the horses and the splash shows how fast they were moving.
Landscape photographer available for commissions.
For picture 2 the focal length was 210mm but the shu er speed only 1/25 sec. With a slow shu er speed it is necessary to pan the camera to follow the moving object. The blurred legs of the horses and the less defined background convey movement well here.
Beautiful pictures of Britain to decorate your home or as gifts. Available online or from Gallery 18, Churchgate, Loughborough.
For the third picture I had to be really quick to catch it before he disappeared! The focal length was 500 mm and the shu er speed was 1/500 sec to prevent camera shake with the long lens. The "footprints" s ll clearly suggest movement.
