The Sun Shone Briefly… It seems that one of the very few days without rain, since the first issue of Soar Valley Life rolled off the press back in April, was St Swithun’s Day! Still, it hasn’t dampened our resolve - or yours it appears, judging by the response to our competitions and from our advertisers. The magazine grows and evolves every month along with our readership; Soar Valley Life now has its own Facebook page with fans as far away as Brisbane and Sydney in Australia, who view our online version of the magazine and keep up to date with us on a regular basis. Our following will increase even more as we launch our brand new web site containing features and articles together with others that didn’t make it into print. You’ll also be able to find our advertisers and go directly to their own websites from Soar Valley Life’s. Take a look on the opposite page for further details. The website will also evolve over time with something new to read every time you visit – just as the magazine changes with each issue. …and change we do. The Greek philosopher Heraclitus around 500 BC pronounced the universal paradox that nothing endures but change and that is the only constant. A few Sundays ago I attended an exhibition of photographs at Gotham Parish Church, hosted by the local history society. There were hundreds of photographs time-lining the changes in this little south Nottinghamshire village, and I was amazed at just how much change there had been. There were pictures of grocers, butchers, pubs, farms, railway lines, gypsum mines, sweet shops, chapels, workshops, wool shops, chip shops, flower shops, garages, blacksmiths… all no longer in existence. There was a picture of my Mum standing outside her haberdashery shop which was all decked out for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, and that made me sad, hitting home at a personal level just how much has gone. I accept that some change is necessary, indeed inevitable and unavoidable; I am today taking my Mum to have her first hearing aid fitted and this change for her is not entirely welcome. But it will improve her quality of life and ours too, if it allows us not to have to constantly repeat ourselves in her presence! Grateful thanks to Charnwood Hearing Aid Centre – page 13. But is it by how we manage change that we may be measured? Gotham is still a pleasant little backwater with a strong sense of community. A wall inside the new memorial hall has its bricks inscribed with the many family names of those who donated money to build the hall. The annual Gala has made a welcome return, the newsagent is now also a mini-market and the church appears to thrive, together with the Local History Society. So, do we embrace change, not for its own sake, but to make the very best of what we have? And I hope that’s what you’ll find in this month’s Soar Valley Life the best of what we have!

21st Anniversary Optometrist Mohammed Bhojani celebrated 21 years practicing in the Loughborough area by inviting three of his first ever patients back to his Quorn practice with a celebratory cake, some drinks, two beautiful bouquets and even a complimentary pair of glasses! For over two decades, ever since he opened the doors of his first eye care practice called Eye Check Opticians on Market St. Loughborough in 1991, Mrs Jennifer Baggaley, her husband James, both from Loughborough and her sister Mrs Shirley Taylor from Castle Donington have been regular clients of Mohammed’s. His original branch quickly expanded into the largest and fastest growing independent opticians’ chain in Leicestershire with eight practices employing over fifty full time staff including six optometrists. In 1999, Mohammed received an offer from a larger national firm to acquire all his branches; however, he retained his quietest practice on the High Street in Quorn and then opened a second optometry practice in Barrow upon Soar (called Visual Answers Opticians) where he continues to see his patients even today. Over 21 years, Mohammed has personally tested the eyes of over 30,000 people living in the Loughborough area with some clients coming from further afield travelling regularly from Sheffield, Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester and London just to see him. ‘We have one patient who comes to see us every two years from the Bahamas - I always offer her the option of a personal home visit if ever she can’t make it,’ joked Mohammed. ‘We’ve followed Mr Bhojani from his original Market Street practice in Loughborough to his branches in Quorn & Barrow. He is a very caring professional with a personable attitude and absolutely up to date equipment.

Page 4

The care and attention he gives makes us feel like a member of the family. We’ve had no cause for complaint in over 21 years!’ said Mrs Taylor. Mohammed is also involved in a variety of other related activities: as sessional optometrist in the Corneal Laser Centre at the Spire Hospital Leicester for 10 years, he worked closely with one of the top local eye specialists, Mr Ray Chaudhuri. More recently, he was asked to give lectures and presentations on aspects of contact lens and practice management to fellow optometrists in the UK and Europe at venues such as The Royal Society of Medicine. He is currently a faculty member of The Academy of Eye Care Excellence, which is part of Novartis Healthcare one of largest medical healthcare companies in the world. In 2007 he was even invited to the Queens Garden Party for services to charity. To celebrate 21 years, his practices at Quorn and Barrow are offering full eye examinations at the original 1991 price of just £10 to anyone who mentions ‘21Year Celebration’ when making their appointment. For more information contact Mohammed Bhojani on 07973 147089 or email: mjb.eye@ntlworld.com or www.VisualAnswers.co.uk

A Contemporary Romance He was wearing a grey hoodie, and a dab of ‘Eau de Skate’ He chose a wicked restaurant for our brilliant first date, He ordered two huge hamburgers, with relish and some fries, And across that plastic table I gazed deep into his eyes When I saw his ‘HATE’ tattoo, I knew I’d found my perfect heaven, And I got to know him well, from half past ten until eleven. We had to leave quite quickly as his lovely pit bull Clyde, Was frightening all the customers; and snarling, just outside, He took me for a lovely walk just by the local tip And there over the council bins, I dropped my bag of chips, We have a brand new baby now, a lovely little boy, I’ve dressed him in a hoodie and I’m going to name him Troy I know his Dad still loves me but my best mate’s not convinced, She’s told me I should ask him…but I haven’t seen him since.

Soot & Sweep Not a lot has changed for the chimney sweep since Charles Kingsley wrote ‘The Water Babies’

“The basic principle hasn’t changed much since Victorian times,” says Mark Aylett, the Chimney Doc. “Soot accumulates inside the chimney walls and needs dislodging with a brush; it falls into the fireplace where it‘s collected and disposed of. These days we use Gaffer tape to seal a blanket around the fireplace and an industrial vacuum to clear up afterwards. For narrower flues we use

...except we don’t send children, or anyone for that matter, up the chimney any more! One of my earliest recollections is of waiting outside on the lawn watching in great anticipation for the chimney sweep’s brush to appear out of the chimney. Yelling and cheering when we first saw it seemed a necessary thing to do; that was our job – how else could Mister Sweep know it was there if we didn’t tell him? The mystery of how his brush found its way up through the blackness and out into the open air dwelled in the same magic fog as things like Santa Claus, or how you could exit a department store lift in a different place from where you’d entered. And watching the Chimney Doc’s brush emerge into the light from the tall, aluminium, industrial-size flue at Leicester University the other day was almost as thrilling, bringing a smile to my face as I remembered my childhood days.

The things we encounter are sometimes quite amazing: birds’ nests with eggs in them are very common, as are cowls which have become completely blocked. Dislodged and loose chimney pots all too often pose quite a threat but, of course, we check before we start and if all is well an average chimney takes about forty minutes. Wood burning stoves present a problem if they haven’t been fitted properly; we frequently find that the flue for the stove has been inadequately fixed and is a safety issue. But we are able to deal with any situation and can offer professional advice and service for all types of chimney and flue. If anyone is concerned, please get in touch and we can advise accordingly.” Two things I noticed that have certainly changed – Mark doesn’t go from job to job on a push bike with his rods strapped to the cross bar, but instead he has a rather smart van. Also - he hasn’t got a face as black as soot...

Short Story - The Goldcrest “I’ve got a job for you.” Ray looked up warily from his newspaper at the Tupperware box in Audrey’s hands. “I saw brambles covered in fruit on Glebe Lane yesterday. You know, opposite the pine woods.” “I know where it is”, Ray muttered. “I’m in the mood for jam making.” “You can buy jam for a pound in the supermarket.” Audrey sighs heavily, “You’re like a moody teenager. Go and fill this tub. The fresh air will do you good.” Ray failed to see how picking blackberries could do anyone any good. The vicious thorns, the exploding fruit that stained everything it touched. Yet he was glad of an excuse to get out of the house. Audrey may have small feet but he was starting to get under them. Retirement, he decided, didn’t suit him. He missed the busy office, the staff gossip and the last minute orders. Now every day felt the same, there was nothing new or remarkable to enjoy. He felt as though his fire had gone out. This was why he found himself half an hour later stood on his tiptoes on a quiet lane picking blackberries. The thorns snagged his shirt and tore fine scratches on his arms and hands. Sticky juice stained his fingers and dripped down his wrists. The back of his neck was prickling in the hot sun, and reaching for the ripest berries was beginning to make his calves ache. Then he heard a high pitched reedy whistle close by. He turned and peered into the dark shadows of the pine trees. He saw a flash of yellow as though someone had struck a match. He put down the tub and stepped closer to the trees. A tiny bird, even smaller than a wren, hopped out of the shadows onto a branch. Ray held his breath. It moved cautiously on fragile legs with charming jerky movements, like a delicate creature made of clockwork. It was exotically beautiful, on its back a shimmer of green feathers, and down its head two black stripes framing a bright golden cap. A word popped into Ray’s head, a word he had not thought of since he was a boy looking through his father’s Spotter’s Guide. “Goldcrest.” He whispered. He’d never seen one in real life. The little bird pecked at the pine needles with its sharp beak, searching for insects. It froze, as though suddenly aware of how exposed it had let itself become, gave

another chirp and took flight, disappearing into the safety of the trees. Ray let out his breath. He heard the bird call again, and another bird call back in reply, and then another. The woods sounded as though they were alive with Goldcrests. Ray hastily put the lid on the half filled tub of blackberries and was back at home within ten minutes. Audrey inspected the harvest as he rifled through the sideboard for his old binoculars. “Well, I won’t be making much jam out of these”, she said in dismay. “I’m going straight back, I’ll get you some more.” Ray called over his shoulder as he found what he was looking for. “Will that make you satisfied?” Audrey looked at the scratches on Ray’s arms, the leaves in his hair and the berry stains on his fingers. But most of all she saw the flush of colour in his cheeks and the sparkle in his eyes. “Oh yes”, she said. “I think it will.” by Jackie Brewster

Obesity Crisis With obesity now affecting 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men, the results of a study by the National Heart Forum show that 75% of adults will be obese by 2020. Although Government initiatives have helped raise awareness of the problems associated with our growing waistlines and sedentary lifestyles, levels of obesity amongst both children and adults have continued to rise. In direct contrast, Debbie Ford, LighterLife Weight-Management Before Counsellor for Loughborough, has helped local residents shed the pounds; the lady pictured here lost an incredible 4 stones in 4 months! Debbie says, “One of the reasons people choose LighterLife is the speed at which they are able to lose weight. Many clients join LighterLife having tried other weight-loss programmes; they’ve been frustrated at the

slow rate of weight loss, lost motivation and have just given up. With LighterLife however, they get fast, simple, safe and sustainable weight-loss and most people see results from week one.” Through the use of nutritionally balanced soups, shakes, meals and bars, clients are able to lose weight quickly and safely - and maintain that weight loss. Weekly, single-sex group meetings are the other key feature of LighterLife. These are designed to help clients explore the reasons why they put on weight – because there’s usually a bit more to it than simply ‘eating too much’. Understanding why they overeat means they’re less likely to return to the old habits that led to weight gain in the past, so they can live lighter in the future.

More than a make-over... Look out of the main gates of St Mary’s Church in Sileby and you’re looking east along King Street, down towards the Midland main line railway bridge. I’ve searched without success for an old picture of the building that has survived through generations of change, when most of its neighbours have become car parks, new-build houses, flats or empty land. Never the prettiest of pubs and certainly not the most loved in its latter days, the Railway Hotel (that was) is in the process of a very professional refurbishment, and already has its first high class retail business occupant. Eden Skincare and Beauty Salon, re-located from Woodhouse Eaves, opened its doors to customers old and new on Monday, 30th July. Holly Smart, Eden’s proprietor explained, “As soon as Simon Richardson showed me the plans he had for the place I just knew that’s where I wanted

Eden to be. The old place was on the first floor and had become quite tired looking during the 8 years since I took it over; it desperately needed a re-furb’. We had a blank canvas to work with here. So we asked for two full treatment rooms, showers, toilets and a spacious reception area, all self contained. We now have a unique team of therapists and can offer all the skincare and beauty treatments you could ever need under one roof - from Gelish manicures (20% off with our reader offer see page 29) Collagen treatments (Botox) by nurses, Decleor facials, along with electrolysis, waxing, eyelash extensions and Fake Bake spray tanning. Oh yes, and don’t forget our MAC trained make-up artist for your full MAC make-over.” So, now, you really do get more than just a make-over down at the Old Railway Hotel in Sileby!

Ringing the changes... From Boot Works to Underwear to Work outs. The earliest census that records a licensed victualler on Brook Street, Sileby was in 1861 when Ann Sarson carried on the trade. In 1881 it was George and Elizabeth Tinkler and twenty years later Edwin Rose and family had taken up the reins. The mono The Bell Ringers Arms circa 1910 photograph (probably taken in the early years of the twentieth century) shows that J. Rudkin was the purveyor of Offilers Ales & Stouts at number 5 Brook Street – the Bell Ringers Arms. Next to the Bell Ringers is the three storey Lawson and Ward Station Boot works which ran down Brook Street to the cottages at the junction of the High Street. The company operated until the late 1960s. Some time after this the top floor was removed and it became a hosiery

The same building today

factory and thereafter, for a few years a company making ladies underwear occupied the premises. Before Physfit Gyms took over in 2009 the first floor had remained unoccupied for a number of years. It is now transformed into a modern gym with the Physfit’s refurbished Gym in Sileby very latest equipment, the training gallery runs right through the first floor almost as long as the jitty from Brook Street to the Tesco car park. See photo on right. William Middleton, owner of Physfit Gyms says “We are going from strength to strength and are now the best equipped gym in the region. Now that we’ve opened up the whole area there’s a much lighter and more spacious feel. We have capacity for about a hundred more members”. I bet whoever named the old pub back in Ann Sarson’s Brook Street from the western end day weren’t thinking about dumb bells and the shoes that Lawson and Ward fashioned were a far cry from the hundred pound a pair trainers worn by Physfit’s members.

The Toughest Race on Earth… Imagine this: swim for 2.4 miles, cycle around mountainous terrain for 112 miles and then finish off the race with a 26 mile marathon in temperatures of up to 34 degrees centigrade… Steve Hillyer, vice president and former chairman of Sileby Vikings Rugby Club and therapist of Recro Sports Massage Therapy, did a lot more than imagine it; on Saturday May 19th of this year he actually took part, along with 1,700 other athletes, in the 21st Ironman Lanzarote challenge. “I’d been doing triathlons for three years but nothing like the Ironman challenge,” said Steve. “The Olympic distances for the triathlon are swim 1,500m (1,600 yd) – bike 40 km (24.9 miles) – and then run for 10 km (6.2 miles). But I wanted to do something special to raise money for cancer research in memory of Erika’s dad Harald, who died of cancer at the age of 62. Harald had intended to take part in the Ironman challenge in 2011 but had to pull out when he became ill.” I asked about the training regime that goes with something as strenuous as that and Erika, Steve’s wife and partner in Recro, answered, “Even though Steve has a very high residual level of fitness, he started intensive training in January and that continued for twenty weeks at six days a week; every week he’d do the equivalent of two or three Ironman triathlons.” Erika went on to describe some of his other interests, “After he’d given up skydiving seriously, back in 2006, Steve helped to start Sileby Rugby Club, along with a group of others.” “We use Platt’s Lane playing field in Cossington,” said Steve,” and from those humble beginnings we’ve achieved some amazing things, culminating in our winning the league this year to gain promotion to division three. Then, at the end of last season, I decided to take a back seat with the Rugby to concentrate on other areas of my life and

put back some of what I’ve learnt over the years. I started training at Loughborough College last summer in Sports Massage and took separate courses in Kinesiology taping – Kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement and taping specific areas aids and improves performance - both before and after vigorous sporting exercise or injury. Taping aids recovery as well as improving the lymphatic drainage system - vital for muscle and joint restoration. Erika has gone through sports therapy training as well and her mum is qualified in Reiki techniques so we’ll be offering a whole range of therapy services as time goes on. And I’m still helping with the Truck Pull as usual at the end of August, and providing one of Hillyer Transport’s trucks for the day.” (See all about that on page 16) I wondered where Steve saw Recro in the future. “I’d like to see us attracting other sports therapy specialists to join us so that we could specialize more with diagnosis tools and technology like Ultrasound; we could be out there with teams and sports people wherever they are, not just in the treatment rooms. We really do like helping people to be better at what they chose to do.” Steve considers his greatest achievement – so far! – was to have completed the Ironman Lanzarote challenge and my last question, to both Steve and Erika, was to ask what was their greatest treasure. Without hesitation they were unanimous, “After our three kids, definitely our health. Losing Harald made us realise how precious life really is; and good health is a person’s greatest resource.” And Recro is here to help people maintain that...

This year Soar Valley Life Magazine and The Free Trade Inn, in Sileby, are hosting the coffee morning from 10.30 through to 12.30 with a Bring & Buy Cake Sale Extravaganza! You’ll be able to enjoy a delicious coffee or tea and sample mouthwatering cake as well as helping to raise much needed funds for Macmillan cancer support. Bring along your favourite cake to share with others and have a good old natter too. So far we’ve ordered Lemon Drizzle Cake from Mr Fleet, Cornish Heavy Cake from Steve at Soar Valley Life, Mary’s Pineapple Upsidedown Cake and Joan’s Rum & Raisin cup cakes! There’ll be a framed certificate awarded to the best offering…

Just turn up between 10.30 and 12 on Friday 28th September and enjoy…

Reader’s Recipe Lemon Drizzle Cake Makes 30 squares

Ingredients For the cake: 225g softened butter 225g caster sugar 275g self-raising flour 2 tsp baking powder 4 eggs 4tbsps milk Grated zest of 2 lemons For the crunchy topping: 175g granulated sugar Juice of 2 lemons Method: Preheat the oven to 180c/160c fan or gas mark 4. Line a greased 30 x 23 x 4cm roasting tin with baking paper. Measure all ingredients for the cake into a large bowl. Beat well for about 2 minutes until well blended. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin and level the top gently with a spatula.

Bake in the middle of the oven for about 35 – 40 minutes or until the cake springs back when lightly pressed and is beginning to shrink away from the sides of the tin. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for a few minutes before lifting it out of the tin while still in its lining paper. Carefully remove the paper and place the cake onto a wire rack over a tray. To make the crunchy topping, mix the lemon juice and granulated sugar in a small bowl to give a runny consistency. Spoon this mixture evenly over the cake whilst it is still just warm. Cut into squares when cold and store in an airtight tin. Submitted by D.C.F. of Sileby

Drinking Water is one of the most basic needs for human life. Although we can survive without food for around three weeks, we can’t manage without water for more than about three days. The mantra of ‘drink eight glasses of water a day’ is repeated again and again as the ultimate goal for good health. But actually it’s a myth and it’s not really known where it came from. How can it be true when we are all different sizes, some of us are active and some are sedentary, and the weather may be freezing or sweltering? Your water intake doesn’t even have to come from ‘water’. That is, fruit and vegetables, soups, milk and soft drinks – and even teas and coffees, despite being slightly diuretic - are all sources of fluid. Again another urban myth is that only pure water counts and that simply isn’t true.

Although the obvious thing to say is to drink when you are thirsty, as we age the ability to feel thirst deteriorates. So you should be conscious of this, and particularly if you have been active in warm weather, increase your fluid intake for the rest of the day. But don’t go from one extreme to the other; if you feel you have become dehydrated make an effort to drink little and often. It can be dangerous to consume a very high quantity of fluid in a short time. One of the easiest ways to tell if you need to drink more is to pay attention to your urinary habits. If it has been many hours since you last passed water and when you do go your urine is dark yellow, then it is time to increase your fluids.

Dispelling the Myths Surrounding a Relationship Breakdown

The personal nature of any matrimonial or relationship breakdown sometimes makes it difficult to ask for help or advice. Quite often you rely on hearsay; at one time or another you may have spoken to a friend or family member about certain issues. Some of the following statements will no doubt be familiar to you but what you may be surprised to know is that they are all either partly or completely untrue! * Divorce is automatic after you have been separated for 2 years * You can have a “quickie” divorce * Irretrievable breakdown of relationship is the only grounds for divorce * Once you are divorced your surname reverts to your maiden name automatically * Step-parents cannot have parental responsibility in respect of their step children * It is up to the Courts to decide on how much child maintenance should be paid * If you don’t pay child maintenance you have no right to see your child * You and your partner have lived together for six months or more and are therefore classed as a ‘common law’ husband or wife * When I divorced my husband/wife walked away with everything and I got nothing

There are of course laws in place to govern how these things should be dealt with. However, no two cases are the same; each is judged on an individual basis and therefore what happened to your friend or relative may not be the case for you. Relationship breakdowns are always difficult for the people involved, but even more so if they do not have the full facts about any rights they may, or may not, have. It is therefore important that proper legal advice is sought to obtain correct guidance and information. Moss Solicitors Family Department offers a free 30 minute consultation to give you the benefit of having early professional guidance. This will enable you to make important decisions which can impact upon you and your family. If you would like further information or help regarding matrimonial and family matters please contact Rita Rathod r.rathod@moss-solicitors.co.uk or Ann Elliott a.elliott@moss-solicitors.co.uk or telephone 01509 217770. Definitely worth the paper it’s written on! There’s a certificate dated 21st September 1926 hanging on the office wall of Tony Scottorn, Chairman of Charnwood Car Company of Loughborough, which says: Mr H. M. Scottorn is recognised as a Bona Fide & Honourable Agent pledged to conduct business upon lines which will ensure the Sanctity of his Contracts and that he will always give: A SQUARE DEAL & GOOD SERVICE The penalty for any breach would be a fine of £250, more than £5,000 in today’s money! This was Tony’s Dad who started his garage business in 1922 at Six Hills opposite the Durham Ox Hotel on the A46. The garage is still there although now under a different owner - the one that sells Murco fuel. We can assume that Mr H. M. Scottorn offered many square deals in the ensuing years as evidenced by the framed 1934 calendar also on Tony’s wall; the business had expanded by then and he also had a tyre company on Nottingham Road Loughborough. When Tony’s father sold the garage business he bought a farm nearby where Tony was brought up and where he began his working life. But the lure of the motor car was too much and in the sixties Tony went to work for Arthur Prince in Loughborough, first as a salesman then as Sales Manager, before starting his own business more than 30 years ago.

On 30th August 1993 Tony, along with Roger Cramp and Dud Moseley, drove a Citroen ZX Turbo for 1,416 miles around Millbrook motor test circuit under the scrutiny of R.A.C. observers. Driving in one and a half hour shifts they broke 19 records for the class, 12 of which still stand today. Their average speed, as verified by another certificate on Tony’s office wall, was 117.97 miles per hour! That Citroen ZX Turbo still commands pride of place today at the entrance to Tony’s premises on Duke Street, Loughborough. I asked Tony what he considered to be his greatest achievement and he showed me a letter he’d recently received from the Good Garage Scheme. “After all these years it is this that I am most proud of...” The letter, addressed to Melanie Davie, Tony’s daughter and MD of the company, congratulated Charnwood Car Company upon being voted one of the top five garages nationwide. Will he put that in a frame to mount on his wall? “You bet!”

In 1988 The Charnwood Car Company became the region’s main Citroen Dealer.

Foot Care and Diabetes People with diabetes can develop serious problems with their feet which may affect how easily they can walk and can even lead to amputation. Foot problems can affect anyone who has diabetes, whether they are being treated with insulin, tablets, non-insulin injections or diet and physical activity only. People with diabetes are more likely to be admitted to hospital with a foot ulcer than with any other complication of diabetes. Diabetes reduces blood flow to certain areas of the body, especially limbs and particularly the feet, which makes it harder for your body to heal injuries. Diabetes nerve damage may cause you to no longer feel pain in your feet and therefore you may not realise you have a wound or injury that needs treatment. Many of these serious problems can be prevented by taking good care of your feet and your health: • Manage your diabetes, including keeping your blood pressure, blood sugar (glucose) and cholesterol at levels your health care provider recommends. • Don’t smoke; smoking reduces blood flow to the feet. • Make healthy food choices. • Stay at a healthy weight. • Be physically active every day. • Take your medicines even when you feel good. • Have regular comprehensive checks with your foot care provider. • Check your feet for sores and other injuries every day. • Wear shoes that fit right and don’t rub, pinch or cause blisters. • Never walk barefoot or whilst wearing just socks. Do not try to deal with corns, calluses, verrucae or other foot problems by yourself. They should be treated by a foot care provider. In particular, do not use chemicals or acid plasters to remove corns, etc.

Top Tips Around the Home & Garden

By Dave Walters of Charnwood Maintenance Services Autumn is an ideal time to spruce up your home. With kids going back to school and starting a new year, look at autumn as a fresh start for your house, too. OUTDOORS 1. Wash your windows inside and especially outside. The summer can be just as harsh on windows as winter. Don’t wait until spring to give your whole house a brighter outlook. 2. Before you store your patio furniture and children’s outdoor toys, wash them off and cover them in plastic or old sheets. 3. Check the caulk, seals and weather stripping around all windows and doors and repair as needed. Wipe down window wells and ledges. Hose and wipe down exterior doors. 4. Drain and store garden hoses. If you have an in-ground sprinkler system, have it professionally blown out and winterised. 5. Check gutters and downspouts and clear out debris. 6. Clean out your garage and hose out summer dirt and grime. 7. Trim trees away from the house. Have dead trees and branches removed by professional tree trimmers. 8. Check walls and fences for signs of wear and repair any loose panels or holes. Wobbly paving stones can also be secured, but choose a dry spell to do any cementing. 9. After the recent winds and rains check for loose slates etc. on your roof.

INDOORS 1. Have your fireplace and chimney inspected, cleaned and made ready for winter use. 2. Autumn is a good time to replace batteries in your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and other home safety devices. 3. Get your beds ready for a cosy winter. Autumn is also a good time to do twice-annual mattress turns. Flip your mattress this autumn and next spring and turn it end-to-end. 4. Schedule a professional carpet cleaning or rent a carpet cleaner and do it yourself. 5. Clean out your kitchen cupboards and pantry, paying particular attention to baking supplies, pans and equipment that you’ll need for Christmas baking. 6. Pull your refrigerator, clothes washer and dryer out from the wall and clean behind them - and retrieve any long lost socks! Brush dust off refrigerator coils and use a narrow vacuum hose attachment to clean inside the lint catcher of your dryer. 7. Install or replace weather stripping on all doors and windows. Check for cracks around pipes and electrical outlets entering or exiting the walls. 8. Have your heating system checked by a licensed heating/ air- conditioning professional. Most manufacturers recommend at least annual inspections.

Recipes from around the world: ...a touch of Spain every Saturday on

Loughborough Market

TAPAS The Spanish word tapa can be translated as lid. Tapas originated in Andalucia where it became a custom to serve wine and sherry

with a lid on the glass. It is thought that this was to stop flies contaminating the drink. The bartender would place a small amount of food such as bread or an olive on the lid to eat with the wine. The custom spread throughout Spain but tapas became food in its own right. They are snack sized food made with local produce such as tomatoes or olives. Over the last 30 years their popularity has grown to such an extent that they are now served all over the world.

Facebook thought of the month: Can anyone help with the following request for WW2 information? Please forward to the Editor and we will put you in touch; it comes from Emily Cox, one of Soar Valley Life’s Facebook Friends: “Hello - I live in Quorn but I’m currently at Warwick University studying French and English and next year I have selected to study Literature during WW2. As a part of one of the assignments you can choose to tape, edit and present an interview with someone you know who has vivid memories of the war. I was wondering if anyone who has such memories would be willing to let me interview them - or perhaps you know someone. Any contribution will be helpful!”
