Intent One of the basic concepts behind the Creative Arts Center by Diller Scofidio + Renfro was creating a split level sectional quality of the building that would allow people inside the building to watch each other when in different rooms. This was accomplished by using two glass pieces in the middle of the building which enables clear lines of sight from one room to the other while still maintaining a somewhat soundproofed barrier to allow each space to function without disturbance from other floor.

Solid vs. Void The perspective diagram above highlights the planner relationships between each floor. I conceptualized the solids as the rooms being occupied and the voids as the rooms being viewed. This is because what the occupant is currently occupying is tangible because the occupant is existing within the space while the voided space appears more like a television screen; the occupant is looking out into a space that is currently not assessable. The diagram to the right is displaying the voided space around the stairs in grey with the juxtaposition of the subdivisions of the solid rooms in orange.

New Abstract Orders in Building Facade
Formal Rhyhms and Grids The building program has three floor plates tht fill the site envelope. In a larger building context, these three floor plates are primariry indicators of a formal rhythm that the building itself embodies on its facade. With a glass facade, the transparency of the facade reveals a grid system no only in section and elevation, but one that is present in plan also.

Hierarchy in Use of Space
Spatial Hierarchy In this floor plan, the relationship between the most public sector of the building and the more private sector of the building are identified with distinct charactersitcs. The left side of the building is made up of components such as the recital hall, screening facility, recocrding studio, multimedia lab, and gallery space, ect. These spaces are designed to be utilized by the students, faculty, and passersby. The right side of the building, however, is made up of stair cases and administration spaces. These spaces are designed for faculty or teachers, as well as passersby who use the stairs.

Circulation
The first column of diagrams is highlighting the voided space around the main staircase and the landings. The architects call these spaces living rooms because of their ability to display views into other spaces from the staircase.

Speed of the Section It is interesting that the circulation has such a hierarchical presence in the building as a whole. It brings to question what is the relationship between the paths we walk and the destination? Can these walkways become spaces that stand alone that occupants choose to settle into rather than rush through?

The first half of the building is made of concrete, the second half is made from a steel structure and the outside is cladded with zinc fins that fold along an angle to produce interesting apertures on back corners of the building. The thought behind these apertures was that they would create a forced perspective upon approach.

In addition to its design, the building a green roof which is envrionmentally beneficial in several way. With a green roof, the building contributes to reduce urban heat island effect and stormwater runoff, filtered polluted aire, and atmospheric carbon that is causing global warming. The building’s green roof also serves to enhance the human habitat.
