GREETINGS

Welcome to the HOLLYWOOD BOWL

Simon Woods

Gail Samuel

Welcome to our 98th season at the Hollywood Bowl, capping Gustavo Dudamel’s tenth season as our Music & Artistic Director! Gustavo Dudamel will conduct two weeks of concerts this summer, with a characteristically dazzling and ambitious range of projects, including Mahler’s exalted “Resurrection” Symphony. Benjamin Millepied and his L.A. Dance Project join him for a second look at their stunning collaboration in Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, which earned rave reviews last October. Sensational pianist Khatia Buniatishvili plays Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade makes her Bowl debut with the LA Phil, and the always astonishing Yuja Wang returns with John Adams’ new piano concerto, Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?, which she premiered and toured with us just months ago. Other highlights this summer range from literally theatrical (Siudy Flamenco Dance

Theater in Falla’s El amor brujo and the puppets of Blind Summit Theatre in Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf) to world premieres (newly commissioned works from Laura Karpman and Caroline Shaw). Iván Fischer brings his internationally acclaimed Budapest Festival Orchestra to the Bowl for three nights, Hugh Jackman performs hit songs from Broadway and film on two evenings, and our films with live orchestra include An American in Paris and “America in Space,” a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. I wish you many happy evenings under the stars!

Here we go! Another summer at the Hollywood Bowl. Whatever your personal or family tradition of the Bowl, we are excited to share it with you. And whatever your interests: classical, pops, jazz, Latin, R&B, reggae, Broadway, film, world music, alternative, the ’80s, or much more, we are ready for you to join us here in this magical place for beautiful Southern California summer nights. During your visits to the Bowl this year, we hope you will enjoy the wide array of offerings from Hollywood Bowl Food + Wine: from tacos and fried chicken to sushi and short ribs. Visit our Bowl Store for recordings, t-shirts, picnic accessories, and more. Stop by the Hollywood Bowl Museum to learn about the history of this iconic place. Find a spot in your seat, on a bench, or in one of our many picnic areas to start your evening and then settle in for wonderful music. We at the LA Phil cannot make this happen alone and, as always, we are grateful to all members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the County Chief Executive Office, the Department of Parks and

Recreation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission for their partnership. We thank our foundation, corporate, and media partners, and all of our donors who provide incredible support to each concert you come to experience here at the Bowl. The Hollywood Bowl has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 98 years and we hope you will embrace this beautiful County park as your summer home as well. We are proud to host wonderful artists in diverse genres of music throughout the summer and to bring together all the people of the County and beyond for this quintessentially Los Angeles experience. Thank you for joining us in continuing this tradition. Welcome back, and enjoy the show!

Written & Directed by Aaron Posner Music by Cliff Eberhardt A reimagining of Philoctetes by Sophocles Co-Produced by Round House Theatre

A bold new version of Sophocles’s timeless tale of hurting—and healing. The wounded Philoctetes (Phil) has suffered alone on a desert island for years, stranded there by Odysseus. But now Odysseus needs Phil’s magic weapons to win the Trojan War and enlists Achilles’s daughter Nia to help make peace. Director/adapter Aaron Posner creates an irreverent, spiritual, musical exploration about the wounds we carry, the ones we cause, and the redeeming power of human connection.

ABOUT THE LA PHIL

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL Music & Artistic Director

Driven by an unwavering belief in the power of music to heal, unite, and inspire, Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most distinguished conductors of our day. From the great concert halls to classrooms, video screens, and movie theaters, Dudamel’s remarkable career of musical achievements and championing of access to the arts for young people around the world demonstrates music’s extraordinary capacity to transform people’s lives. Dudamel’s 2018/19 season centers around the Centennial celebration of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and his tenth year as its Music & Artistic Director. Other highlights of the season include his debut at the Metropolitan Opera conducting Verdi’s Otello; tours with the Berlin Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, and Mahler Chamber Orchestra; and his first extended academic residency at Princeton University. Under Dudamel’s direction, the LA Phil has become one of the leading orchestras in the world, admired for its unmatched commitment to new music, diversity and inclusion, and the development of groundbreaking digital initiatives. The celebration of the LA Phil’s 100th season showcases the extraordinary versatility and vision of both the orchestra and Dudamel himself, featuring more than 50 commissions. A lifelong advocate for music education and social development through art, Dudamel himself was shaped by his childhood experience with El Sistema, the extraordinary program of immersive musical training initiated in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu. Entering his 19th year as Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra, Dudamel also carries on the work of his late mentor with his ongoing commitment to El Sistema in Venezuela, and by supporting numerous Sistemainspired projects around the world. One of the few classical musicians to truly reach mainstream audiences while maintaining the highest musical integrity, Gustavo Dudamel has been featured three times on CBS’ 60 Minutes and was the subject of a PBS special, Dudamel: Conducting a Life. He had a cameo role in Amazon Studio’s award-winning series Mozart in the Jungle and, together with members of YOLA, became the first classical musician to

participate in the Super Bowl Halftime Show, appearing alongside pop stars Coldplay, Beyoncé, and Bruno Mars. At John Williams’ personal request, Dudamel guest-conducted on the soundtrack for Star Wars: The Force Awakens; he also recorded James Newton Howard’s soundtrack to Disney’s holiday blockbuster The Nutcracker, in which he makes an on-screen cameo. Dudamel’s cinema, TV, radio, and online broadcasts have reached hundreds of millions of people around the world. Dudamel’s Grammy® Award-winning discography includes landmark recordings of John Adams’ Gospel According to the Other Mary (commissioned and performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic) and the soundtrack to the motion picture Libertador, for which Dudamel composed the score. Dudamel has independently produced an all-Wagner recording available exclusively for download and streaming, a set of the complete Beethoven symphonies from Barcelona’s Palau de la Música, and a broadcast of two Stravinsky ballets in cooperation with the Berlin Philharmonic’s Digital Concert Hall.

Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most decorated conductors of his generation. He received the Páez Medal of Art in 2018, the Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award in 2016, and the 2014 Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society from the Longy School of Music. He was named Musical America’s 2013 Musician of the Year and was voted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame. Gustavo Dudamel was born in 1981 in Barquisimeto, Venezuela. His conducting studies began in 1993 when he was hired as an Assistant Conductor with the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra. In 1999, he was appointed Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra. Inspired by Dudamel’s early musical and mentoring experiences, the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation, a registered charity, was created in 2012. For more information about Gustavo Dudamel, visit his official website: gustavodudamel.com. You can find more about the Gustavo Dudamel Foundation at dudamelfoundation.org.

ABOUT THE LA PHIL

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC Now in its Centennial season, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has redefined what an orchestra can be. Under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel since 2009, it presents an inspiring array of music through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. At home and abroad, the LA Phil — recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras — leads the way in groundbreaking and diverse programming that demonstrates the orchestra’s artistry and vision, on stage and in the community. The LA Phil performs or presents more than 250 concerts annually at its two iconic venues: Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with approximately 165 performances, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and

other thematic programs designed to enhance the audience’s experience of orchestral music. Since 1922, its summer home has been the world-famous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all genres of music. The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond the Concert Hall, with wide-ranging performances in the schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its influential and multifaceted education initiatives is Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music instruction, and leadership training to nearly 1,200 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. The orchestra also undertakes tours, including regular visits to New York, Paris,

and Tokyo, among other cities. The Philharmonic is now the International Orchestral Partner at London’s Barbican Centre. The orchestra’s very first tour was in 1921, and the Philharmonic has toured every season since 1969/70. The LA Phil has a substantial catalog of concerts available online, including the first full-length classical music video released on iTunes. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a millionaire and amateur musician. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, ten renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodziński (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

So far ahead of other American orchestras that it is in competition mainly with its own past achievements. - The New Yorker’s Alex Ross

IS HE LOOKING AT ME? Life as an LA Phil Resident Fellow Launched in the Centennial Season, the LA Phil Resident Fellows program is preparing early-career symphonic musicians representing or serving historically underrepresented populations to compete for, and win, positions in major professional orchestras. The first call for musicians yielded 120 applicants from which four fellows — Andrew Francois, viola; Michael Fuller, double bass; Eduardo Rios, violin; and Wesley Sumpter, percussion — were chosen. Francois recently won a position with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, and Rios was named assistant concertmaster for the Seattle Symphony. The LA Phil recently sat down with Fuller and Sumpter to talk about their time in the program since joining last fall. You have both played with a lot of different orchestras. What is it like in your first year of playing with the LA Phil? Michael Fuller: Well, it’s been fantastic. Before coming out here, I hadn’t really heard the LA Phil a whole lot. I’d seen them on YouTube; I knew all about Gustavo Dudamel and everything, but it’s so much more than what I expected.

How so? MF: The orchestras that I have played with have been with mostly people who are my age, but it’s actually been comfortable playing with more veteran musicians. I’m still learning every day, but it’s been really inviting. You think that you’re playing with these veterans, and it’s going to be a really cold environment, but it’s not that at all. Everything’s really warm and welcoming and supportive. Wesley, how has it been stepping into the percussion section? Wesley Sumpter: I’d say for me it’s been a whirlwind of an experience. You don’t expect to be thrown into what we call a “baptism of fire.” You know, you just kind of walk in and get it done in one rehearsal or no rehearsals. And it’s remarkable because playing here, you learn how to move throughout the business of music, so we’re prepared for wherever we might go [in our careers]. Whether it’s in an orchestra or as a session musician, there’s always going to be a lot of improvisation, a lot of things that are unpredictable.

There have been a lot of concerts where the percussion section was just enormous, but it was quite the opposite for Brahms Symphony No. 4 with Zubin Mehta. All there is out there is timpani and a triangle, and that day the triangle player was you. WS: Yes. That was me. Playing an instrument where you have one shot at making it right, and if it’s not right it’s so exposed. But that’s the name of the game for percussion. There’s so much pressure every time. I’ve started to develop just a sense of comfortability with that unpredictability. So just saying, “Okay. I’ve practiced this. I’m going to see what happens when I’m nervous, what happens when I’m on the spot.” And then working under Maestro Zubin Mehta, that was another pressure added on. Because for me, to watch the orchestra play under him with the first three Brahms Symphonies, and then that fourth, it was just a different air that they had. The orchestra’s like, “Okay. He’s here.” And they walked on stage with a different energy, and so I walked on stage with the same energy they had. I only played for five minutes out of an hour-long piece, but to sit there and just watch him work his magic and have his effect on the >>>

orchestra after not being the music director here for so long is just an astounding kind of thing. Since arriving in the fall, you have both worked with a range of conductors. Are there any that jump out in your mind or moments in rehearsal or performance that were particularly memorable? MF: I remember one of our first concerts with Dudamel. We were playing Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. It was a particularly good performance this night. I felt pretty good that I was nailing it, and then he looked over and kind of like nodded at the basses. Just a little acknowledging, as if to say, “Okay. I see you.” And I was just frozen. I was like ... “Is he looking at me?” Are there any other pieces of repertoire that you have played before but had to approach differently here, or any of this season’s 50-odd commissions that have stood out for you? WS: Our recent commission of Tan Dun’s Buddha Passion. That was a piece I did not expect to be so enthralled by. We rehearsed it without the singers, without the rest of the choir, and without all of these different elements. I really appreciated how it was represented: all Chinese singers, singing in the

dialect, the choir speaking the language; we’re playing traditional instruments like temple bowls and playing traditional rhythms. I’m playing this huge Chinese drum, which brings the intermission and the end of the piece all together. In the fifth movement a throat singer comes out and plays and sings, and then another singer joins as well. When they do this improvisation, interacting back and forth. It kind of just puts you in a Zen state. I forgot about everything going on outside of this. I was just completely there. After the first performance of it, I walked off stage, and I was almost hyperventilating. And that’s not even an exaggeration. It was one of those things where I sat there, and I was just like, “Okay. I need to collect myself.” That was one of the first times that has happened in a long time for me. As an audience member, those moments of transcendence are amazing and so it is nice to hear that even though you are so focused on playing the different instruments in front of you, you can still step back a little bit and enjoy the experience. WS: Oh, I do it every concert. I do not take those moments for granted. I take the time to observe those moments in performance. Because I think that’s just as important as playing. What you do when you’re not playing.

Thinking bigger picture at your careers, I know it is only a few months into this program, but has anything changed for you in your outlook since you arrived here and how you see your career moving forward? MF: I’m just excited to see what’s next. I mean I couldn’t have predicted that I was going to be here. I’ve just always made sure to work hard and hope for the best. And then suddenly this opportunity arises. So, I think as long as I work hard and show that I’m dedicated, something exciting will happen, and I have no idea, necessarily, what that looks like. Despite whatever my plans are or my thoughts of what I want to happen in the near future, as long as I keep playing, things will happen and not necessarily the way I thought they might happen, and that’s okay. WS: This whole experience has affirmed, or rather reaffirmed, in my mind that this is actually what I want to do with my skillset: to be a working musician, of course, but also to venture off into other things, like composing eventually or conducting, maybe. I’m open to all of it. The LA Phil works with a lot of young people through YOLA, and many of them are interested in pursuing a career in music. I am curious what kinds of things would you say to them right now? What has helped you to get to this point in your career? MF: Once I stopped being so concerned about what other people thought about me, I was able to start moving forward quickly. You should think for yourself about where you want to be going, and it’s never too soon to be thinking about it. Don’t ever listen to the naysayers! WS: I’ll piggy-back and say just never let anyone tell you no. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re not good enough, because we all have continuous and exponential room for improvement. If I had to take a look at myself seven years ago when I started undergrad: I didn’t have a teacher; my parents and I, we didn’t really know how to go about auditioning for college, or how I should go about a music career. They just didn’t know. So, I didn’t take lessons; I just practiced a lot. And then I got to college, and I saw, “Okay. I’m not that far away from where everyone else is, so I guess I’ve been doing something right.” It’s just having that drive and making sure that you have a commitment to what you want to do even if what you want changes. Because there’s nothing wrong with that.

THE LATEST FROM THE LA PHIL Stories from at home and on the road

Acclaim from Asia for LA Phil Tour This spring, the LA Phil kicked off an ambitious and unprecedented year of touring as part of its Centennial season. The LA Phil 100 Tour will take the orchestra and members of YOLA to three continents and seven countries. In March, the first leg of that journey took the LA Phil to Asia for seven concerts in Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan. “Seoul is a special place to me,” Music Director Gustavo Dudamel told Korean press. “Korean audiences are warm, love music, and value the young performers who will carry the future on their shoulders.” That love was reciprocated by both those audiences and music critics who watched at the Seoul Arts Center as the LA Phil performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 and John Adams’ new piano concerto, Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes? with Yuja Wang. “Dudamel led the orchestra as if it were a musical instrument. From the first movement that started out plainly to the fourth movement that is the core of the piece, I felt the vividness of every note; the performances of

the brass, including the seven horn players who stood at the finale, were especially smooth and prominent,” wrote Mi-Young Kim about the LA Phil’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 for The Hankyoreh newspaper in Seoul. “Just from looking at the back of Dudamel, who conducts as if he were dancing, I could feel how much he loved and enjoyed this piece.” For its second Korean concert, the LA Phil performed the music of John Williams at Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Arena – the first concert of its kind in the venue that required a small army of logistics crews to transform the space into a 10,000-person concert hall. As Mast Media CEO Yong Kim explained to press, usually only a few thousand people get to see visiting orchestras, and so negotiations began with the LA Phil two years ago to turn their performance into a large-scale classical music festival. That spirit of extending impact and audiences continued when the LA Phil traveled to Tokyo. There, in addition to concerts in Suntory and NHK halls, the latter performance was captured and broadcast across Japan through NHK TV and radio. A core part of all LA Phil tours is the experience they provide for musicians in the Phil’s YOLA family. Fifteen YOLA musicians traveled to Korea where they participated in a cultural

exchange with 65 musicians from the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service (El Sistema Korea: Orchestra of Dreams), culminating in an open rehearsal under Dudamel’s baton. Sophomore bassoonist Carlos Cano of YOLA at EXPO Center documented his experience and wrote of his El Sistema Korea peers, “We grew a strong connection with each other, despite the differences in our culture and our language barriers. They were all really nice, cool, and funny, and they thought the same about us. We were so glad that we had the chance to eat with them one last time, before we had to part ways and possibly never see each other again (but that’s no worry, we got their Instagrams!)”

LA Phil Welcomes New Trumpet Jeffrey Strong is the new Third/Utility Trumpet of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Prior to joining the LA Phil, Jeffrey spent four years in the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as Second Trumpet. Jeffrey also served as a member of the trumpet/cornet section in “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band from 2009 until 2015, where he was an often-featured soloist. Additionally, Jeffrey has performed with the National Symphony Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and he was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago.

A native of Fresno, California, Jeffrey earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University. His primary teachers have included Barbara Butler, Charles Geyer, David Burkhart, and Joseph Lenigan. Jeffrey and his wife, Maggie, are thrilled to have returned to their home state of California with their daughter Sarah and their dog Archer.

Baranov’s Last Bow Violinist Mark Baranov retired from the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the end of the 2018/19 winter season, after 41 years of distinguished musicmaking with the orchestra. Trained in the Soviet Union at the Gnessin Music Academy in Moscow, where he earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, he joined the LA Phil in 1978, hired by Zubin Mehta. Music Director Carlo Maria Giulini appointed Baranov assistant concertmaster in 1980, a position he held until 2017. Baranov had served as co-concertmaster of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra under Gennady Rozhdestvensky, appearing as soloist on many occasions and touring with the ensemble in Eastern and Western Europe and Japan, as well as throughout the U.S.S.R. He was also a member of the Moscow Radio String Quartet. With these ensembles he toured throughout Europe, participating in many important festivals and gave the U.S.S.R. premieres of works by composers such as Schoenberg, Messiaen, Denisov, and Schnittke, and made several recordings on the Melodiya label. After coming to the United Sates in 1978, he became very active in the Southland’s musical community. In 1983 he founded the critically acclaimed chamber ensemble Trio West with his late wife, pianist Lina Targonsky, and Philharmonic cellist Barry Gold. The ensemble performed frequently throughout Southern California, including on the Philharmonic’s Chamber Music series. Baranov has also appeared as a soloist with the Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl and at the Music Center. He has been a visiting professor of violin at Biola University and UCLA. He frequently gives master classes throughout the U.S.A. and judges many violin competitions. Thank you, Mark, for so many years of wonderful music, and best wishes!

Iturbi Foundation Sponsors July Concert For four decades, world-famous concert pianist and conductor José Iturbi (1895-1980) headlined sold-out performances at the Hollywood Bowl. This summer, Iturbi returns in spirit as the José Iturbi Foundation (JIF) sponsors “Dudamel Conducts Rachmaninoff” on July 18, featuring Khatia Buniatishvili playing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with Dudamel and the LA Phil. During the mid-20th century, Iturbi was considered to be one of the world’s greatest and most popular classical pianists and conductors. He made his record-breaking six-performance Hollywood Bowl debut in August 1934, and continued to perform at the Bowl regularly, often with his sister, pianist Amparo Iturbi. In 1950, Iturbi became the first musician to sell more than a million

copies of a single record – Chopin’s “Military” Polonaise. This milestone was recognized with Iturbi receiving a star on Hollywood Boulevard.’s world-famous “Walk of Fame.” Since Iturbi’s charisma resonated with audiences of all ages, he starred in seven MGM films in the 1940s, giving him the opportunity to reach out to millions of movie fans and help popularize classical music… one note at a time! One of Iturbi’s favorite film roles was in Anchors Aweigh (1945), co-starring Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as sailors; in search of Iturbi, they find him rehearsing on stage under the famous shell at the Hollywood Bowl. The José Iturbi Foundation is dedicated to continuing the legacy of Iturbi by fulfilling his wish to make classical music accessible to people of all ages through blockbuster concerts with world-famous classical musicians. JIF also spotlights today’s greatest emerging talents and prizewinning musicians through concert performances and with the José Iturbi International Music Competition, dubbed the “Classical Idol” of classical music competitions by the Associated Press.

Gustavo Dudamel in action at the Hollywood Bowl.

A DECADE OF DELIGHTS 10 years of Gustavo Dudamel at the Bowl

In September of 2005, a curly-haired, high-energy, 24-year-old conductor made his U.S. debut at the Hollywood Bowl, leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic in music by Revueltas and Tchaikovsky. Though largely unknown to the audience, he was already creating a buzz among industry talent scouts, who were well-represented that night. “I hope the Philharmonic kept the visiting orchestra officials out of his dressing room long enough to get first dibs on his next American engagement,” Mark Swed wrote in his highly positive Los Angeles Times review. “And the one after that. And after that.” And indeed they did. Just four years later, Gustavo Dudamel returned to the Bowl with the LA Phil for ¡Bienvenido Gustavo!, a monumental free community concert that launched his tenure as the orchestra’s

new Music Director, succeeding Esa-Pekka Salonen. The ensuing ten years have been a decade of magnificent accomplishment and pioneering creativity for Dudamel and the LA Phil. Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (with a new purpose-built center arriving soon), annual tours, recordings (14, and more in the immediate pipeline), and multifaceted technological initiatives have filled the seasons with inspiring projects. “We challenge ourselves all the time. We are an orchestra that loves challenges, is committed to music and community,” Dudamel told an interviewer for the Korea Herald on the orchestra’s latest tour. “That is why I am so proud to celebrate ten years with the LA Phil. Music is the bridge to heal anger, to heal unrest, and to build spaces to

see each other and (become) brothers and sisters.” Dudamel will be here at the Bowl again this month for two weeks (July 16-25). His wide-ranging orchestral programs include a stunning look at Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet with Benjamin Millepied and his L.A. Dance Project, revisiting their very successful collaboration at Walt Disney Concert Hall back in October. He will also lead a selection of classic film scores from Hollywood’s Golden Age, Mahler’s ecstatic and cathartic “Resurrection” Symphony, No. 2, and Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony. His soloists include Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade in her Bowl debut and stellar pianist Yuja Wang, playing John Adams’ brilliant new concerto Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?, which she premiered and toured with Dudamel and the LA Phil this past season. “The possibilities are infinite at the Bowl,” Dudamel says. “That is the thing, how this place embraces so many people, so much diversity – it’s a place of inclusion.”

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission fosters excellence, diversity, vitality, understanding, and accessibility of the arts in Los Angeles County, encompassing 88 municipalities, and provides leadership in cultural services. In addition to supporting over 400 arts organizations in its role as an arts funder, the Arts Commission implements the regional initiative dedicated to restoring arts education to 81 school districts, funds the largest arts internship program in the country, and commissions art for the County’s civic art collection. This July, the Arts Commission will become the official Department of Arts and Culture for the County of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association’s programs are made possible, in part, by generous grants from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, and from the National Endowment for the Arts.

DID YOU KNOW?

New Exhibit

Going Green Since Day One The Hollywood Bowl was the first amphitheater in California to be certified as an Audubon Society Cooperative Sanctuary and features a friendly habitat for native flora and fauna. 1

David Swedlow was a spirited futurist who saw the world around him as full of possibilities. In both his personal and professional life, he fully embodied the optimism of post-war America. An entrepreneur par excellence, Swedlow helped mold and shape this bright future through his pioneering work in the design and manufacture of acrylics. Beginning in the late 1930s, Swedlow Inc. and its predecessor companies had a far-reaching impact on the aerospace industry, supplying windows, canopies, and windshields for military and commercial aircraft. This plastics pioneer was also an early high-fidelity enthusiast who imagined the future of sound recording. Swedlow sensed the changes that WWII would effect on society and foresaw the tremendous technological advances that wartime industries would generate. He was one of many passionate audiophiles who, in the late 1940s and early 1950s, began buying and assembling professional audio components, fostering a new industry in home high-fidelity equipment. Swedlow purchased and customized an Ampex tape recorder for an extraordinary personal project: to capture the Los Angeles Philharmonic performing live. Beginning in July 1954 and continuing for six seasons, Swedlow recorded nearly the entire series of LA Phil concerts – a total of 246 – both at Philharmonic Auditorium and at the Hollywood Bowl, using his experimental three-track machine. The result is a collection of over 1,500 ten-inch three-track reel-to-reel tapes,

which he donated to the Philharmonic in 1986. This exhibition documents the fruits of Swedlow’s passion for music, offering audio selections from landmark performances that have only been heard by those who attended the concerts! David Swedlow’s collection is now considered the crown jewel of the LA Phil’s archives. It is a rare surviving document of the orchestra’s activities in the late 1950s. The collection includes performances by exceptional conductors including such legendary figures as Bruno Walter, Georg Solti, and Leopold Stokowski, as well as celebrated soloists Yehudi Menuhin, Renata Tebaldi, and Oscar Peterson. The concerts led by Dutch conductor Eduard van Beinum, the Philharmonic’s music director from 1956 to 1959, are a treasure for connoisseurs and historians and considered the high point of the collection. Tapes Rolling: David Swedlow Records the Hollywood Bowl, 1954-1959 honors Swedlow’s trailblazing legacy and offers a new appreciation of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s analog past.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association’s efforts to preserve the Hollywood Bowl as a quiet oasis, where live music can be heard under the stars in the middle of the buzzing city, have included outreach to airplane and helicopter pilot associations, air traffic controllers, the air support division of the LAPD, and the local office of the FAA. “No Fly” posters have been produced since the 1970s and distributed through these organizations to help dissuade aviators from flying over the Bowl during the summer.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Chromeo

CHROMEO World leaders, powerful CEOs, and other fat cats could learn a lesson or two from electrofunk duo Chromeo, namely: know thyself, know thy vibe, and stay thy course. The rest of the population will catch up. Indeed, Chromeo is really good at being, well, Chromeo. The mission, the package, the vision – it’s been a straight shot of pure intentionality from the jump. Funk a game plan, Montreal natives Dave 1 and P-Thugg had a ten-year battle strategy: from cult ’80s fetishists on 2004’s She’s In Control to indie blog darlings on 2007’s Fancy Footwork, to international touring sensations on 2010’s Business Casual, to bona fide pop stars on 2014’s White Women. And guess what? Pee (still looking a smooth criminal in a Coogi) and Dave (ever the Semitic/Gallic heartthrob in tight pants) are back. Early 2018 marked the release of the Funklordz’ fifth studio LP, Head Over Heels. The album not only elevates Chromeo’s blueprint of ass-targeting beats, melodic honey, and clever lyrics about the foibles of contemporary love…it augments it with unprecedented conceptual cohesion, booming sonics, and more collaborations than ever before. Session legends such as Pino Palladino and Jesse Johnson (The Time, D’Angelo) coexist alongside the likes of DRAM and The-Dream on this intricate and ambitious ode to funk music, orchestrated by modern-day masters of the genre. Consider the first single “Juice,” a hilarious paean to female power set to a buoyant California bop: it’s Chromeo at its biggest and baddest.

TORO Y MOI Chaz Bear (formerly Bundick) was a musician from birth. Growing up, it was normal to hear music across genres, from Michael Jackson to

Elvis Costello to The Specials, in the Bundick household. These influences were quite unique for a biracial kid growing up in South Carolina, contributing to the complexity of Chaz’s self-understanding and expression through his own music. Chaz began playing and recording original compositions in his preteen years, forming multiple indie bands starting in middle school and continuing until his personal project, Toro y Moi, was signed by Carpark Records in 2009. Before getting signed, he was already an incredibly prolific artist, having released over 10 Toro y Moi albums on his own (and undoubtedly retaining a vast compendium of unreleased songs). His personal work drew upon a more vast array of influences than did his full band. Early Toro work called upon Chaz’s childhood exposure to ‘80s R&B, pop and electronic music, while also evolving with his discoveries of acts like My Bloody Valentine and J Dilla and his burgeoning interest in French house. Just before his graduation from the University of South Carolina, where he earned a degree in graphic design, Chaz caught the attention of music bloggers and record labels with his dreamy, bedroom recordings, eventually compiled into his first album under Carpark Records, Causers of This. Causers was one of a few albums to kick off the trend of home-recorded, hazy albums relying heavily on samples and production, evoking the feeling of a muggy, Southern summer. While the album did well and broke ground for Chaz’s career as a musician, it resulted in the widespread assumption that Chaz was a one trick pony, able only to write music similar to that of Causers. He immediately made it clear that he is an extremely dynamic musician with the 2011 release of Underneath the Pine, an album recorded between tours that was composed entirely of live instrumentation, moving away from the sample-based aesthetic of Causers. From then on, Chaz released an album every other year (sometimes more fre-

quently), each one a display of his adeptness with different genres. While each album was distinct and sometimes a complete departure from the previous, Chaz’s unique production techniques and melodic sensibilities tie them all together. Whether listening to the psych rock-based What For? or R&B influenced Boo Boo, it is always clear that it’s a Toro y Moi album. The Toro y Moi album, Outer Peace, was written and recorded in the Bay Area after Chaz’s return from a one-year stint in Portland. It is somewhat of a homecoming celebration, filled with features by friends and saturated with a playfulness that had not previously been embraced in past Toro albums. Outer Peace stands in contrast to the more sparse and contemplative Boo Boo, an album recorded while in Portland in relative isolation. With Outer

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Peace, Chaz showcases his ability to remain on the cutting edge of music’s evolution while not taking himself too seriously. There are contemporary hip hop references mixed in with funk, Eurodance and ambient elements, all interwoven expertly and retaining that quintessential Toro y Moi aesthetic. Outer Peace is the most recent step along Toro y Moi’s journey, promising the listener a little slice of insight into the complex and dynamic mind of Chaz Bear.

NONAME Noname (born Fatimah Warner) is an American artist from Chicago, Illinois, who blurs the lines of poetry and rap through the music she creates. Noname grew up in Bronzeville, a historic neighborhood on the southside of Chicago that famously attracted accomplished black artists and intellectuals of all types. Noname first discovered her love for words while taking a creative writing class as a sophmore in highschool. She became enamored with poetry and spoken word - poring over Def Poetry Jam clips on YouTube and attending open mics around the city. Noname regularly attended and performed at an open mic at Harold Washington Library - YouMedia’s Lyricist Loft. After sessions at YouMedia, Noname would participate in cyphers and started getting into freestyling. When she was just a senior in high school, she placed third in “Louder Than a Bomb,” a poetry competition with 120 Chicago high schools in participation. She remained connected with the artists she met at YouMedia and in 2013, her verse on Chance the Rapper’s “Lost” attracted the beginning of her large fan base, most of whom have been following her every move since. On July 31, 2016 Noname released her debut project entitled Telefone which was three years in the making and highly anticipated by fans and media alike. Instantly the project gained critical acclaim with a rave review by Pitchfork and landing her praise from major outlets like Rolling Stone, Complex and Dazed & Confused. Noname has been hailed by The FADER, Complex, and Rolling Stone as one of the most exciting and important new artists of 2016. Thanks to Telefone’s success, Noname played some shows in support of Lauryn Hill, who hand-picked Noname to open for her on tour. When first approaching the project, Noname set out to emulate the feeling of talking on the phone with someone for the first time. She describes Telefone as “an

Noname

introductory conversation with someone you’re interested in.” But as Noname continued to work on the tape, it also transitioned a bit into mortality: the idea of life and death and the duality between those two things.

IAN ISIAH Big Shugga aka Ian Isiah is a bona fide NYC R&B sex idol. Raised in the heart of Brooklyn with a strong gospel stripe, he’s grown into the forefront of both fashion and LGBTQ movements. Seen as a creative leader and magnetic muse of the Hood By Air brand, you can find him hymning in a church or street corner as often as you can hear him on a mic MCing one of NYC’s underground raves (Ghe20 G0th1k, etc). Ian has loaned his talents elsewhere as well, branding and performing his special bag of tricks at events for Virgil Abloh + Nike, Helmut Lang, Adidas, Century 21, Colmar and many others over the years. Ian performs live on tour with Blood Orange and is featured/singing all over the latest album Negro Swan + Hynes’ previous LP Freetown Sound, following appearances on Chromeo, Theophilus London and SSION records. Musically silenced himself since The Love Champion and a string of singles/videos over the last five years, Ian chopped up Shugga Sextape with one of his strongest musical statements, pairing Sinjin Hawke (Kanye’s

Ian Isiah

The Life of Pablo, Gangsta Boo, Sicko Mobb). The two mutated and formed the DNA of modern R&B and radio rap to bond an alien baby love child summing up Ian’s past years and commemorating this period of Americana ahead of Ian’s forthcoming, debut LP. They’re joined by production from Soda Plains, MORRIS and Gabriel Schuman, and a very special single feature on “Killup” from Bronx-native, Hot97 favorite HoodCelebrity. Little-known gem “GOD” comes from WeDidIt member Juice Jackal, the druggy love story covered in Ian’s unique brand of soul. Seen as a life and style icon on Instagram and off in the streets, Ian is bringing the latest chapter in his wet and wild story to you now ahead of the full album in 2019. Let the threesome laden tales of “Bedroom” excite your sensibilities, sink stoned back to “Persistent’s” mantra melodies, or fall in love with the romantic side of “247.” All laced up with live audio clips of Ian’s day-to-day religious-cum-sexy duality. Rewind the sextape and give it another spin.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Nicholas Hooper

NICHOLAS HOOPER Nicholas Hooper is one of Europe’s leading composers, having written and produced music for over 250 films, dramas, and documentaries since 1990. He has developed a reputation for producing music that is original, inspiring, and always colorful.

His scores have received several major accolades. In 2004, he won the BAFTA for Best Original Score for The Young Visiters as well as being nominated for State of Play in the same year. Nicholas was nominated for a 2006 BAFTA for his score to The Girl in The Café, and prior to this was BAFTA-nominated for The Way We Live Now. In 1998, he won the coveted Golden Panda Award for Land of the Tiger, a major BBC documentary series on India. The following year he won again (having been nominated for three separate scores), making him the first composer to win the award consecutively. He has received many other accolades for his feature films, including the period feature The Heart of Me, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Olivia Williams, and The Tichborne Claimant (noted by Variety: “Nicholas Hooper’s alert symphonic score rates a major bow, adding shape and atmosphere to the labyrinthine tale”). A committed proponent of the performance of new music, Hicks conceived and completed a Microcommission Project, the first of its kind, with the Minnesota Orchestra, in which hundreds of people made microdonations to fund a major new work by composer Judd Greenstein. Her recording project with the Vermont Symphony, “Triple Doubles,” featuring music of Richard Danielpour and David Ludwig, with soloists Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson, was recently released on the Bridge Label. Sarah Hicks was born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Honolulu, HI. Trained on both the piano and the viola, she was a prizewinning pianist by her early teens. MenAlive has devoted entire concerts to some of the most popular artists, such as ABBA, Queen, Elton John, and Madonna, and performed music written especially for the chorus. MenAlive continues to pursue its mission, “to build bridges to the public at large,” not only through remarkable singing, but also through service to other arts groups, non-profits, health service organizations, and the community at large. ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Celebrating our country’s 243rd birthday, our July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular explores the star-spangled musical heritage of the United States. The groundbreaking disco hit-makers Nile Rodgers and CHIC join conductor Thomas Wilkins and the Los Angeles Philharmonic for a stirring set of their classic hits. Grammy-winning composer Alan Silvestri (b. 1950) was an early starter, scoring The Doberman Gang when he was 21 years old. Since then, he has written prolifically for both films and television. He has collaborated regularly with producer Robert Zemeckis, including the Back to the Future trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, The Polar Express, Beowulf, and Flight. From his main theme for Joe Johnston’s 2011 Captain America: The First Avenger, Silvestri arranged a powerful and stirring Captain America March, which received its premiere at the annual “Hollywood in Vienna” concert in 2011, where Silvestri received the Max Steiner Film Music Achievement Award. A long-time champion of an “American” musical sound and style, William Schuman (1910-1992) drew on works of William Billings to evoke an atmosphere of the Revolutionary period in his New England Triptych. “William Billings (1746-1800) is a major figure in the history of American music,” Schuman wrote. “The works of this dynamic composer capture the spirit of sinewy ruggedness, deep religiosity, and patriotic fervor that we associate with the Revolutionary period…. These pieces do not constitute a ‘fantasy’ on themes of Billings, nor ‘variations’ on his themes, but rather a fusion of styles and musical language.” The first of the three pieces, “Be Glad Then, America” features muscular timpani and brass, reminding us that the text for Billings’ anthem includes “Shout and rejoice… Hallelujah!” John Williams (b. 1932) has to be one of the most prolific and popular composers of our time. His works for the concert hall have met with acclaim from both critics and audiences, including Soundings, composed for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s inaugural festivities for Walt Disney Concert Hall, which joined a long list of works composed for leading orchestras and soloists around the world. Most famously, Williams is one of Hollywood’s most in-demand composers for film. His collaborations with many of cinema’s leading directors, above all Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, have secured this reputation with such classics as Jaws (1975), Star

Wars (1977), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), as well as his more recent work on the Star Wars prequels and the Harry Potter series. In these and his many other film scores — including Midway (1976), the all-star naval epic directed by Jack Smight – Williams embodies the tradition of Hollywood film music at its grandest and most expansive. Robert Lowden (1920-1998) served in the U.S. Army Band during World War II and went on to compose and arrange for Claude Thornhill’s big band and for 101 Strings. His Armed Forces Salute gathers the songs and marches of the branches of the United States military, with allusions to other patriotic music in the transitions. The earliest version of the Army’s song was the “Caisson Song,” written by three lieutenants stationed in the Philippines in 1908. In 1917 John Philip Sousa was asked to adapt it as a march for the Field Artillery, and in that form it became a huge popular hit. “Semper Paratus” (Always Ready), the official song of the U.S. Coast Guard, was composed by Coast Guard Captain Francis S. Van Boskerck while stationed in Alaska in 1927. The tune now used for the “Marines Hymn” is based on the Gendarmes’ Duet from Jacques Offenbach’s operetta Geneviève de Brabant, which premiered in Paris in 1859. “The United States Air Force” was written by Captain Robert MacArthur Crawford as the “Army Air Corps Song” in 1939, and won a competition organized by the Air Corps, with a $1,000 prize from Liberty magazine. (In 1947 the words “United States Air Force” replaced “Army Air Corps” in the title.) “Anchors Aweigh” is the fight song of the U.S. Naval Academy, and was composed in 1906 by Lieutenant Charles A. Zimmerman, then bandmaster at the Academy.

John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was known the world over as a bandleader and the composer of dozens of marches, as well as of operettas, orchestral suites, and songs. The three marches on tonight’s program are American classics. The Washington Post was completed by Sousa in 1889, a commission for the Washington Post newspaper award ceremonies for promising journalists and essayists. Sousa penned Semper Fidelis in 1888. The march takes its title from the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps: Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful. In Sousa’s own words: “I wrote Semper Fidelis one night while in tears, after my comrades of the Marine Corps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico.” It became one of his most popular marches, and Sousa himself considered it his best. The Stars and Stripes Forever! was written in 1896 while Sousa was aboard ship from England to the United States. George Benson

Californian Carmen Dragon (1914-1984) was a highly successful composer, arranger, and conductor. Trained at San Jose State College, he worked as a nightclub pianist, and then as an arranger in Hollywood. He eventually scored more than 30 films, as well as television and stage shows. He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl many times in the 1950s and ’60s, recorded prolifically with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony, and served as music director of the Glendale Symphony for many years. His evocative arrangements — here of the powerful 1895 patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful” by Samuel Augustus Ward (18471903) — are still performed by orchestras and choirs around the world.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Leon Bridges

LEON BRIDGES Leon Bridges’ first strides as a soul inspired R&B artist prompted comparisons to legends like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, but he quickly came into his own as a Top Ten, multiple Grammy-nominated, globally touring artist. The 28-year-old singer-songwriter honed his talent performing in and around his native Fort Worth, Texas, at open mic nights. Leon attracted industry attention when the venerable music and culture site Gorilla-vs-Bear posted uploads of analog recordings produced by Niles City Sound’s Josh Block and Austin Jenkins. Signed to Columbia Records, Bridges’ first singles, including a rich ballad written about his mother, appeared in February 2015 with a sound that evoked classic R&B. His debut album, Coming Home, followed four months later to critical and commercial success. It debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and was nominated for two Grammys: Best R&B Album and Best Music Video.

Bridges kept busy with appearances across the world, including but not limited to performing at the White House for President Obama, the Library of Congress, the Museum of Modern Art Film Benefit (A Tribute To Tom Hanks), and Tom Ford New York Fashion Week event. He opened for the Rolling Stones in Europe and announced opening dates on the Harry Styles tour in South America. Leon also penned the main track for Concussion starring Will Smith, and had a huge sync with his track “River” on Reese Witherspoon’s hit HBO series Big Little Lies. In 2016 and 2017, Bridges was active as a performer and collaborator. In addition to extensive tours and festivals, he co-wrote and was featured on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Kevin,” Nick Waterhouse’s “Katchi,” and Kacey Musgraves’ “Present Without a Bow.” Additionally, he recorded “On My Own” with Lecrae and connected twice with Gary Clark, Jr., for Live North America 2016 and on a collaborative cover of Neil Young’s “Ohio.” Work with Aminé and ODESZA was

also out by the end of 2017. Early the following year, Coming Home was certified gold by the RIAA. Shortly thereafter, Bridges released “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand,” “Bad Bad News,” and “Beyond” – the first offerings off his contemporary and stylistically broader second album, Good Thing, released in May 2018. Critics heralded Good Thing for its modern R&B sound, lush production, and joyous songwriting. Leon supported the album with a global tour, including a sold-out night at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and two sold-out nights at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. 2018 saw Leon work with country star Luke Combs, collaborate with CFDA Award-winning luxury brand AHLEM Eyewear, and portray Gil Scott Heron in the Damien Chazelle-directed film First Man. Leon garnered two more Grammy nominations for Best Traditional R&B performance for “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand” and Best R&B album for Good Thing, making him now a four-time Grammy nominee.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Rhye

RHYE Shrouded in mystery, Rhye first surfaced setting the Internet abuzz with ambiguous imagery, sophisticatedly sensual music videos, and that distinctive voice. Following the runaway online success of two initial singles, the critically acclaimed debut album Woman was released in 2013 and lauded by critics from Pitchfork to The Guardian to The New York Times. Gifted songwriting, breathtaking vocals, and deft instrumental arrangements combine to create an intoxicating blend of R&B-influenced, deeply emotive music, making the album a staple for provoking intimate moments. Since the release of Woman, Rhye has relentlessly toured to establish a devoted global fan base. Transforming what was once a studio project, the music has been elevated by a cast of accomplished multi-instrumentalists enrapturing crowds in theaters and festivals worldwide, highlighted by riveting sets at Coachella and Pitchfork amongst many others. Rhye’s second album, Blood, was released in February 2018 and was hailed as “reserved, understated, and brilliant” by NPR Music, “soul pop that hits all the high notes” by the Wall Street Journal, and “a triumph” by NME. A new piano-focused project titled Spirit arrived in May 2019, celebrating the subtle magic of gentle moments and featuring collaborations with Ólafur Arnalds, Doveman, and Dan Wilson.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Chrissie Hynde

CHRISSIE HYNDE Since forming The Pretenders in 1978, Chrissie Hynde has influenced the world of rock with her distinctive sound. The singer, songwriter, and guitarist is known for some of the most recognized songs of the 20th century, including “Back on the Chain Gang” and “I’ll Stand By You.” Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Also an ardent animal rights campaigner and accomplished painter, Hynde published her autobiography, Reckless: My Life as a Pretender, in 2015. In 2018, she published Adding the Blue, a limited-edition book collection of her artwork. Hynde makes her Hollywood Bowl debut in a world premiere event performing with a full orchestra, showcasing tracks from her extraordinary new, jazz-dub album Valve Bone Woe. The album was recorded by acclaimed producers Marius de Vries and

Eldad Guetta, and it features songs by The Beach Boys, Antônio Carlos Jobim, and Ray Davies, among others. Her show tonight will feature songs from Valve Bone Woe and a selection of Pretenders favorites. “I’m not hugely interested in branching out into other musical genres,” Hynde writes in her liner notes for the new album, “being a devout rock singer as such, but jazz is something I grew up around (thanks to my bro) and I’ve always had a soft spot for it. I also often bemoan what I regard as a decline in melody in popular music. I wanted to sing melodies. Plus, I’ve always had a penchant for cover songs, and include one on every Pretenders album. It’s the surprise of singing something that I didn’t think of writing myself that turns me on. “Jazz got sidelined by Rock and Roll in the ’60s, but now the demise of rock seems to be heralding in a new-found interest in jazz, the most creative and innovative musical form of the 20th century, and I’m happy to jump on the bandwagon.”

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley

DAMIAN “JR. GONG” MARLEY Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, once known as the “The Youngest Veteran” by his fellow artists, is now an elder in the game who’s not afraid to speak his mind out of respect for the music and culture he loves – and for the divine spirit of humanity in all of us. The lyrically profound and largely self-produced 12th studio album released in 2018, Stony Hill maintains the element of hardness from “Jam-Rock” to “Stony” and arrived at a moment when the rhythms of the Caribbean were and still are all over the pop charts – with mostly light-hearted lyrical content. “No punk can finish where Bob Marley started…we have to stand for the integrity of the music,” Marley says of the inspiration of his album. “It’s good to get some music out there that points to the foundation, the spirituality of it,” says Jr. Gong. “You don’t have to turn into a clown to sell the music,” Damian continues, chastising those whose appeal is based on stunts and gimmicks. His recent album Stony Hill takes its title from the Kingston neighborhood where Damian grew up, a relatively well-to-do residential neighborhood just a short drive away from Half Way Tree, the city crossroads that marks the dividing line between uptown and downtown. The young Gong grew up seeing every side of life. “Some people were critics of a song like ‘Jamrock’,” he admits. “They say ‘Well, you didn’t come from the ghetto.’ But it’s not about where you come from. Coming from uptown doesn’t mean you can’t care about people who don’t live where you live. Furthermore, Jamaica is so small that nowhere is far.” “It’s definitely not just a collection of songs,” Damian says of Stony Hill, “where like we just grab a bunch of singles and we’re finished. It’s a body of work that we focused on. But then again it wasn’t too super-premedi-

tated either. It just so happens that this is how I was feeling and what I felt like saying at that time.” Though a handful of tracks dates all the way back to 2008, Damian says he locked in on the album in 2017 and had worked nonstop since then to complete the project for its release in June of 2018. So much has changed in his life and in the world since he first began. “It’s easier to be a critic than to be a visionary,” Damian continues. “It’s easier to criticize the path that we’re on, and much harder to try to carve out a new path to follow. When it comes to conscious reggae music, a lot of the songs that you listen to tell you to Bash Babylon! But not a lot of them tell you what to do after you’re finished bashing Babylon. Bashing Babylon – how would I say now? that don’t make you successful. Where to go after there?” The youngest son of reggae legend Bob Marley, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley garnered his own place in music history when he became the first ever reggae artist to win a Grammy outside of the “Reggae” category, taking home an award for Best Urban/Alternative

Performance for his title single, “Welcome To Jamrock.” The acclaimed 2005 breakthrough disc Welcome To Jamrock also won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Marley has been shaking up stages all over the world for the past few years, first in collaboration with Nas on their Distant Relatives project, and then when he went on to partner with Skrillex for their groundbreaking track “Make It Bun Dem,” which Rolling Stone called “a monster mash up of dubstep and dancehall.” Marley’s latest album Stony Hill won the 2018 Grammy® Award for Best Reggae Album. Additionally, Damian appeared on Saturday Night Live alongside Jay Z to perform their standout track “Bam,” and he is also featured on Ty Dolla $ign’s acclaimed track “So Am I” with Skrillex. Most recently, Damian released the remix and music video for his single “Medication” featuring Stephen Marley, Wiz Khalifa, and Ty Dolla $ign.

THIRD WORLD Celebrating 45 years, “Reggae Ambassadors” Third World is one of the longest-lived reggae bands of all time, and one of Jamaica’s most consistently popular crossover acts among international audiences. Mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, and rock and, later on, dancehall and rap, Third World’s style has been described as “reggae-fusion.” With 10 Grammy nominations and a catalog of charted smash hits (including “Now That We Found Love,” “96 Degrees in the Shade,” and “Try Jah Love”) spanning over four decades, sold-out tours, a vibrant and loyal fan base and inspirational messages, one may wonder, “Where did it all begin? What gives Third World the staying power so rare in the music

Thirld World

industry?” Third World is an institution that stands for producing and performing music that, while holding firm to the cultural and ancestral roots of its members, still pushes forward the cutting edge of music worldwide. It is an institution whose themes are positive, progressive, and internationally relevant: an asset to any-size festival / event. Third World has performed to thousands of music fans on six of the seven continents: TW toured and recorded with late great Bob Marley, including opening for Marley’s first world tour in 1978; TW recorded and toured with master blaster Stevie Wonder, who produced two of their albums in the ’80s; they toured America with legendary guitarist Santana; opened for the Jackson 5’s first concert in Jamaica; shared stages throughout the world with Bono of U2, Sting, The Police, Whitney Houston, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, Jimmy Buffet, Eric Clapton, Marc Anthony, and more. Third World’s hit songs have reached Top 40 on the Billboard charts in the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Japan, where they received a platinum award. In 1986, Third World received the United Nations Peace Medal for their contribution of music and their lyrical prose. They performed on the MTV Amnesty International Concert at a sold-out Giant Stadium in 1986; performed at the Rose Bowl with Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, and Michael Jackson; at Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, and the Welcome Home Nelson Mandala concert in 1990; and have been featured at major sporting events. TW has entertained millions of television viewers with performances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Arsenio Hall Show, Soul Train, Top of the Pops, Shirley Bassie show, and more. Third World will be releasing a new studio album (due Spring of 2019), produced by four-time Grammy winner Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley under the Ghetto Youth International imprint.

KABAKA PYRAMID Kabaka Pyramid is a conscious revolutionary lyricist with a unique musical style, blending the power, energy, and melody of reggae with the lyricism of hip hop. Hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, this Bebble Rock Music artist uses his liquid and hypnotizing delivery to spread positive messages of spiritual evolution that force you to listen. The name “Kabaka” is Ugandan for “King,” and the long-lasting survival of the Pyramids

Kabaka Pyramid

of ancient Africa represent his desire for longevity in the music and deep connection to Kemetic roots, leaving messages for generations to come. This award-winning artist has developed a solid global fan base that connects deeply with the messages in his music, touring extensively over the past six years to the largest reggae stages around the world. Aided by his excellent “Bebble Rockers” band, he has brought his message and power to tens of thousands of people in North America, Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean, hitting stages such as “Reggae on the River” (U.S.), Rebel Salute (Jamaica), Sierra Nevada World Music Festival (U.S.), “Rototom Sunsplash” (Spain), Musa (Portugal), SummerJam (Germany), Reggae Sumfest (Jamaica), Reggae Sundance (Holland), Reggae Sun Ska Festival (France), South by South West (U.S.), BoomTown (U.K.), as well as headlining multiple 20+ multi-city club tours. He has also excelled at support for the 30-show, United States “Stony Hill” tour with Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley to rave reviews. Kabaka is well known for delivering an electrifying and entertaining live performance. In 2018, following the global success of impactful hit singles, EPs, and mixtapes over the previous seven years, Kabaka released his debut album Kontraband to tremendous critical acclaim and rave reviews. The project, executive produced by Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, is a joint release with Bebble Rock Music and Ghetto Youths International and has been a Top 10 mainstay on reggae charts worldwide. Featuring artists such as Chronixx, Protoje, Pressure Buss Pipe, Akon and of course Damian Marley, as well as singles like “Well Done,” “Kontraband,” “Borders,” and the anthem “Can’t Breathe,” which topped the global reggae charts in 2017, the album

is already considered a modern-day classic. The Pyramid has released a powerful catalogue over the years including the “Accurate” mixtape presented by music superpower Major Lazer and Walshy Fire to tremendous reception, with the mixtape proving to be a hit amongst reggae/hip-hop fans. He has also completed the perennial “Rebel Music” EP and the Billboard Top 10 charting “Lead the Way” EP. With singles such as “Never Gonna Be A Slave,” “No Capitalist,” “Mi Alright” with Chronixx, and “Free From Chains,” as well as music videos for the popular “Reggae Music,” “Warrior” featuring Protoje, “World Wide Love,” “Liberal Opposer,” and “High and Windy” with Sara Lugo, he has achieved regular rotation on local and international airwaves. Kabaka Pyramid is touted by many as a leader in the new wave of powerful reggae artists coming out of Jamaica. Kabaka has achieved recognition both locally and overseas, placing #1 on the Billboard Next Big Sound Chartas and also featured by the popular music conglomerates, The Fader, MTVIggy, Okayplayer, Reggaeville, Vogue, Billboard, BET, amongst many others in the media landscape. In 2013, he was named Breakthrough Artist of The Year by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association. He is also a three-time nominee for Song of the Year 2013, 2014, and 2015 for the tracks “No Capitalist,” “Mi Alright,” and “Well Done,” respectively. The lyricist has in addition won the award for best reggae recording by Canada’s highly respected Juno Awards with Exco Levi. With a mission to steer future generations towards harmony and unity, Kabaka Pyramid is primed and focused on bringing a righteous and conscious way of thinking to the masses through reggae music.
