WELCOME!

This summer we are celebrating the first 100 years of the Hollywood Bowl. In the past century, this beautiful space has grown from a simple idea to an iconic venue known worldwide. But beyond the bright lights and unmatched performances you will find what the Hollywood Bowl means to the people of Los Angeles. For so many Angelenos, it’s an essential part of summer, it’s a tradition passed down by families introducing their children to their first concert, and it’s a rite of passage for newcomers to our city.

As a Los Angeles County public park, the Bowl is fundamentally a shared space meant for all. In our hundredth year, we also celebrate our long-standing partnership with LA County Parks & Recreation. It is a core part of the LA Phil’s mission to inspire and invest in our community through our stewardship of cultural treasures like the Hollywood Bowl. You can learn in the pages of this magazine about some of the countless stories both on and of the Bowl’s stage. What quickly becomes evident is that the Hollywood Bowl is a venue created, and ever changing, to reflect the many cultures and aspirations of Southern California. Most importantly, this is a space where community thrives through the shared experience of live music. I hope you enjoy the concert and embrace this extraordinary space.

summer concert season. It is certainly a time of excitement, not only for music lovers but also for those who work behind the scenes to make it a memorable experience for all.

The Hollywood Bowl is a unique venue in a beautiful setting. I am proud to say that the Hollywood Bowl is a part of the County of Los Angeles Department of Parks and Recreation (LA County Parks) system. We are partners with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and work together to enhance the dual role of the Hollywood Bowl as an LA County Park and world-class performance venue. Our mutual teams work tirelessly all year long to get ready for the summer concert season.

life. During this crisis, many Los Angeles County residents have turned to parks like never before for fresh air, exercise, respite, and a sense of peace. Research shows that parks are indeed critical for our well-being, with numerous studies documenting the benefits for social, physical, and mental health.

The Hollywood Bowl is well known as a concert venue, but it is so much more than that. For example, did you know that the Hollywood Bowl functioned as a food distribution site and voting center, serving thousands of Angelenos in need during the COVID-19 pandemic? After two difcult years, I am so glad that we are able to return to the Hollywood Bowl with our families and friends for a new

LA County Parks is also thrilled to be partnering with the LA Phil—in celebration of the Hollywood Bowl’s centennial—to launch the Hollywood Bowl access program, providing youth and seniors in our parks the opportunity to experience the magic of the Hollywood Bowl summer. This partnership serves to further strengthen LA County Parks’ commitment to access for all!

The global pandemic has underscored that parks and public spaces, especially those that are close to home, are crucial to our quality of

When the LA Phil and other musicians are not on stage, the Hollywood Bowl is open to the public for recreation and exercise. The Bowl ofers a magnificent park where visitors can stroll, bring out-of-town guests, take pictures in front of the iconic shell, and learn about the Hollywood Bowl’s history at the on-site museum. The amphitheater is also the perfect setting for a great workout, with exercise enthusiasts taking advantage of the steps throughout the park.

LA County Parks is also proud to ofer dynamic summer programming, from concerts and movies in the parks to aquatic programming, trail hikes, overnight family camping, and much more. For more information, please visit parks.lacounty.gov.

As for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy music under the stars…

DUDAMEL

Gustavo Dudamel is driven by the belief that music has the power to transform lives, to inspire, and to change the world. Through his dynamic presence on the podium and his tireless advocacy for arts education, Dudamel has introduced classical music to new audiences around the world and has helped to provide access to the arts for countless people in underserved communities. As the Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, now in his 12th season, Dudamel’s bold programming and expansive vision led The New York Times to herald the LA Phil as “the most important orchestra in America—period.”

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dudamel has committed even more time and energy to his mission of bringing music to people across the globe, firm in his conviction that the arts play an essential role in creating a more just, peaceful, and integrated society. A landmark event was the highly anticipated launch of Symphony, a touring virtual reality project in collaboration with La Caixa Foundation that features Dudamel and 101 musicians from 22 countries in a stateof-the-art, immersive VR film experience. The free touring exhibition, housed in two mobile pop-up cinemas, launched in Barcelona and will travel to hundreds of towns across Spain and Portugal in order to allow tens of thousands of people to have access to the power of symphonic music.

In April 2021, it was announced that Dudamel would join the Paris Opera as its next Music Director, for six seasons beginning in August 2021. Dudamel has led more than 30 staged, semi-staged, and concert productions across the world’s major stages, including five staged productions with Teatro alla Scala, productions at the Berlin and Vienna State Operas, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and 13 operas in Los Angeles, with repertoire ranging from Così fan tutte to Carmen, from Otello to Tannhäuser, from West Side Story to contemporary operas by composers like John Adams and Oliver

Knussen. As part of his inaugural season as Music Director of the Paris Opera, Dudamel is conducting performances of Puccini’s Turandot and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro

Following his U.S. debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005, Dudamel became the orchestra’s music director starting with the 2009/10 season, and, under his direction, the LA Phil has secured its place as one of the leading orchestras in the world. Inspired by El Sistema, Dudamel, the LA Phil and its community partners founded YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) in 2007, now providing 1,500 young people with free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic support, and leadership training. In fall 2021, YOLA opened its own permanent, purpose-built facility: The Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry.

One of the few classical musicians to become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon, Dudamel conducted Bernstein’s iconic score for Steven Spielberg’s new adaptation of West Side Story. His extensive, multiple-Grammy

Award®-winning discography numbers 57 releases, including Deutsche Grammophon LA Phil recordings of the complete Charles Ives symphonies and Andrew Norman’s Sustain (both of which won the Grammy Award® for Best Orchestral Performance), and, most recently, Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand” (winner of the 2022 Grammy for Best Choral Performance).

Dudamel’s advocacy for the power of music to unite, heal, and inspire is global in scope. Shaped by his transformative experience as a youth in Venezuela’s immersive musical training program El Sistema, he created the Dudamel Foundation in 2012 with the goal “to expand access to music and the arts by providing tools and opportunities for young people to shape their creative futures.”

For more information about Gustavo Dudamel, visit his ofcial website at gustavodudamel.com and the Dudamel Foundation at dudamelfoundation.org.

HOLLYWOOD BOWL ORCHESTRA

The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is comprised of approximately 80 players, an international mix of classically trained musicians who are among the best studio musicians in Los Angeles. Many spend their days on Hollywood’s scoring stages. It might be surprising to learn that there is no overlap between the musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra—another indicator that LA has a tremendous pool of musical talent.

Musicians have been performing at the Hollywood Bowl since its opening in 1922. “Bowl Orchestra” was used as early as 1925, and “Hollywood Bowl Orchestra” appeared on live recordings made in 1928. Leopold Stokowski was Music Director of the Hollywood Bowl

Symphony Orchestra from 1945 to 1946.

During this time, the Orchestra recorded a number of classical works. In the 1950s and 1960s, Capitol Records issued an extensive series of recordings of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra with a number of different conductors, including Carmen Dragon, Felix Slatkin, Alfred Newman, and Miklós Rózsa, with album titles such as Rhapsody Under the Stars Chopin by Starlight Fiesta!, Marche!, and many others.

From the 1950s on, there was no ofcial Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, until it re-appeared in 1991, under the auspices of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, as a completely new ensemble under the direction of Principal Conductor John Mauceri. After retiring from the

orchestra in 2006, Mauceri was awarded the lifelong title of Founding Director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.

In 2008, Thomas Wilkins began an appointment as Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. From June 2014, he became Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, in which position he continues to lead the ensemble each summer in a diverse range of concerts at the fabled outdoor venue.

From Mozart to Motown, the repertoire of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra is as diverse as Hollywood itself. In a single season, the orchestra may perform everything from Broadway favorites to film music, pop music to jazz, and classical music to world premieres by living composers. In essence, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra does it all.

BRAMWELL TOVEY

In July, the Hollywood Bowl and the Los Angeles Philharmonic lost a dear friend and creative colleague when Bramwell Tovey died of cancer the day after his 69th birthday. A master communicator in both music and speech, the conductor/pianist/composer had been a popular figure at the Bowl for almost 20 years, beloved by audiences and critics alike for his expressive music-making in a broad repertory and for his witty, engaging introductions.

“By the time I’ve walked out, bowed, conducted the ‘Star-Spangled Banner,’ and everyone’s sat down, it doesn’t look like anything much but actually you’ve already sort of sampled the Bowl experience,” Tovey said in 2014. “When I speak to the audience for the first time, I can see everyone right to the back, and if it’s packed, that’s 18,000 people. As soon as it gets dark, the only people I can see are in the front seats, but you can feel this tremendous energy coming at you and it’s absolutely thrilling.”

Tovey was born in a London suburb, and he began serious piano study at age seven. He received formal training at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of London, and his early career was spent mostly in the theater, with the London Festival Ballet, the Scottish Ballet, the Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, and the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. His family has deep roots in the Salvation Army, and Tovey learned to play all of the brass instruments in Salvation Army bands, which also taught him his improvisational skills and how to hold an audience with words.

“You can bore people so easily. You need humor, like you’d use at a dinner party,” Tovey has said. “You want to keep it in intelligent layperson’s language and spice it up with the odd line—and you have to know when to shut up; that’s terribly important, too.”

Tovey was music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (for 18 years, before becoming music director emeritus), and the Luxembourg

Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he conducted the world premiere of Penderecki’s Symphony No. 8. He was principal conductor and artistic director of the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra at his death, and the 2022/23 season was to have been his first as music director of the Sarasota Orchestra.

As a composer, Tovey has written viola and cello concertos, an opera, a film score, and many brass-band pieces. He won a Juno (Canada’s Grammy equivalent) for his Requiem for a Charred Skull. The LA Phil co-commissioned Urban Runway, a sassy orchestral cakewalk that he conducted at the Bowl twice, including its West Coast premiere.

Tovey made his Bowl debut in 2003, and in 2008 he began his tenure as Principal Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl. (He conducted the LA Phil downtown, making his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut in 2007.) He also played piano at the Bowl several times, as the soloist in Rhapsody in Blue and accompanying songs.

“I’m tremendously excited about it—love the orchestra,” Tovey said when he was appointed to his titled position with the LA Phil. “They are a very, very friendly and welcoming group, and making music with them is a real pleasure. … And, of course, it’s an incredible institution, the Hollywood Bowl. Here, when

you’re in the conductor’s room waiting to go onstage, there’s a huge picture on the wall of Otto Klemperer conducting the LA Phil at the Bowl in, I think, 1948. So, here’s this great master conductor, who was a Jewish refugee from the Nazis, personal friend and assistant to Gustav Mahler, and his portrait hangs in the conductor’s room of him conducting on the stage where you’re about to go.

For me, that’s a fantastic tradition.”

Bramwell Tovey is now a distinguished part of the tradition himself, and he will be missed by all here. —John Henken

NO FLY ZONE

Few things can sour a symphony or scuttle a soulful song like uninvited noise. Not long after airplanes and helicopters became regular sights in the Los Angeles sky, the Hollywood Bowl began outreach to the local FAA ofce and pilots’ associations to prevent aircraft from passing over the Bowl during concert-season evenings. Sometimes, though, we all need a reminder. For decades, posters would be hung in pilot lounges at commercial and private airfields in the area. This artwork was meant to be eye-catching, would sometimes play of a theme from the season, and became a fun and colorful genre seen by few of those who didn’t have their pilot’s license. THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL: VAST YET INTIMATE

A concertgoer who sets foot in the Hollywood Bowl’s amphitheater for the first time is typically struck by the venue’s vast size. But a performer who stands on stage for the first time tends to remark on the opposite. Singer Mel Tormé put it succinctly: “The Hollywood Bowl with its thousands of seats is one of the most intimate venues in which I appear.”

transcend genre. These conductors and their orchestras have shared the stage with soloists and singers whose stars have shone no less brightly. Soloists have similarly relied on outsized personalities, an appeal that bridges musical styles, and the star power to hold the attention of 18,000 fans. For most of Bowl history, conductors and guest artists managed this feat without the assistance of video screens, and the earliest ones did it without amplified sound.

through the decade. The who’s who of conductors included Emil Oberhofer, Sir Henry Wood, Ossip Gabrilowitsch, Eugene Goossens, Pierre Monteux, and Bruno Walter.

The most gifted and memorable performers in Hollywood Bowl history are those who could make the Bowl’s sprawling canyon feel like a friend’s backyard. It is a strange alchemy of musical ability, personality, and instinct that allows certain artists to captivate and endear themselves to a Bowl audience. Successful conductors have tended to possess a striking stage presence, an ability to roll with the punches, and musical tastes that

Dozens of world-renowned artists have made their North American debut at the Hollywood Bowl—and more than a few of them have described it as a career-defining moment. There is also a handful of artists whose charisma has helped to shape the Bowl, bringing with them new genres and formats. Above all, the women and men who have become a part of the Bowl’s legacy are the ones who achieved that special connection between audience and performer that is both the cause and the efect of the Bowl’s most surprising feature: its intimacy.

After Alfred Hertz’s tenure as music director in 1922, a series of famous European conductors made the long trip west, by sea and train, to perform at the Hollywood Bowl

Conductors typically were put up at the rustic but charming Hollywood Hotel at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, just south of the Bowl. There, they hobnobbed with Hollywood’s elite, including Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin, who rarely missed a Bowl show in those years. Conductors were treated as celebrities, their personalities and predilections written about by the local press. The Los Angeles Times marveled at Bruno Walter’s mostly raw diet: “He had a special breakfast dish which he prepared himself by soaking oatmeal 12 hours, adding lemon, milk, raw apples, and nuts.”

Before they could win over audiences, however, conductors had to win over the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra. The morning rehearsals under a hot summer sun, limited rehearsal time, and the demands of Bowl audiences for sophisticated, varied repertoire put pressure on many conductors. The members of the orchestra could help them succeed but were known to have

fun with pretentious conductors in rehearsals. Gabrilowitsch remarked: “They act like devils in the morning and play like angels in the evening.”

Italian maestro Bernardino Molinari raged in rehearsal in 1928 when he thought the orchestra was not taking the music seriously enough. At one point, he threw a chair of the stage. That night, however, the orchestra (and audience) wowed Molinari with their dedication to the music.

Others fared less well against the “devils.” In the third season of Symphonies Under the Stars, Ethel Leginska became the first woman to conduct at the Hollywood Bowl. Leginska electrified the Bowl audience but enraged the orchestra players. Leginska said she found prejudice among the Bowl’s players against “a woman shaking a stick over them.”

As critic Isabel Morse Jones described in her Hollywood Bowl history, “Leginska’s blue-green eyes grew black with fury at the orchestra’s implication that she could not conduct Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. That night, she found 25,000 people back of her, and a rebellious 80 in front. She subdued them all, even playing a Weber piano concerto and domineering over the orchestra at the same time. She knew her scores, some of them being of her own composing, and her temperament did the rest. The men never forgave her her success.”

However, they did learn a lesson, because they treated Antonia Brico, the next woman to conduct at the Bowl, with much more deference. Despite Leginska’s success in 1924 and Brico’s in 1930, women conductors at the Hollywood Bowl remained a rarity for decades.

For its first two decades, the Hollywood Bowl was a venue dedicated to “high culture,” including operas, religious services, classical music, and Shakespeare. In fact, there was tremendous reticence toward opening the Bowl up to other types of “popular” entertainment. Ultimately, it was the star power of a few performers and their throngs of fans that changed what was acceptable for the Bowl’s stage.

The Hollywood Bowl and the Los Angeles Philharmonic were on shaky ground financially going into the 1937 season and were looking for a show that could raise a significant amount of revenue. Oscar Levant, a piano student of Arnold Schoenberg, told conductor Otto Klemperer that if he wanted a blockbuster concert, there was only one man to turn to: George Gershwin, a young composer who had recently come to Los Angeles to do work in motion pictures. Though exceptionally popular, Gershwin was not taken seriously by classical musicians in the United States. Nonetheless, Klemperer arranged a meeting.

“No conductor dare play down or program down to a Hollywood Bowl audience. They are neither bored by the classics nor shocked by the moderns. But they are ever eager for new music. Most of all they demand quality throughout, and while they share with all Americans the love for the spectacular, they refuse to accept it as a substitute for art. … Nowhere else in all the world can such a combination be found; a vast natural auditorium … an earnest, intelligent, sympathetic audience … a rich and generous city.”

Though Klemperer found Gershwin arrogant, he was charmed by the young composer, calling him “a cheeky fellow.”

Sadly, a Gershwin performance at the Hollywood Bowl was not to be. The composer fell into a coma and died of a suspected brain tumor at the age of 38. A blockbuster Gershwin program did happen at the Bowl that summer, though. Instead of a showcase of the composer and pianist, it was a memorial concert held on September 8, 1937. Millions of Americans tuned in to CBS Radio to hear the star-studded program.

Klemperer began with Gershwin’s Prelude No. 2, arranged as a funeral march. Lily Pons sang “Summertime.” Three original Porgy and Bess cast members performed other excerpts from the Gershwin opera. Bowl regular José Iturbi conducted Rhapsody in Blue from the piano. Oscar Levant and Charles Previn—great-uncle of André Previn—divided the tasks on the Concerto in F. Fred Astaire sang Ira Gershwin’s lyrics to one of the last melodies George ever wrote: “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.”

The Gershwin memorial concert, with its mixing of jazz, opera, orchestral music, and movie stars, exemplified what

would become the Hollywood Bowl’s aesthetic—a mixing of “high” and “low” art. Gershwin and the Hollywood Bowl would become forever connected in the minds of American music lovers. The connection helped elevate Gershwin’s legitimacy as an American artist and shape what the Hollywood Bowl would become.

After the Gershwin memorial, succeeding years brought increasing variety—and controversy—to Hollywood Bowl programming. In 1939, Benny Goodman appeared at the Bowl— arguably the first jazz performance in the history of the venue. The debate between what was “popular” and what was “good” came to a head in yet another financially strapped year, 1943, when the world’s most in-demand star performed a benefit concert for the Bowl: Frank Sinatra. It was the first time a popular “ballad singer” had appeared alongside an orchestra in Los Angeles.

Because of wartime restrictions, only 10,000 adoring fans could attend the Bowl debut of Sinatra that summer. At the time, he was two years into his solo career and on the verge of becoming one of the most recognized recording artists of his generation. One writer summed up the atmosphere at the Bowl.

Sinatra’s smooth-toned voice made the Bowl feel as intimate as ever, and the box-ofce receipts helped right the Bowl’s finances. However, the controversy raged on for the rest of the summer. Letters pro- and anti-Sinatra appeared in newspapers for weeks. The Los Angeles music impresario Andrae Nordskog wrote to the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner: “Is the name ‘Sinatra’ synonymous with the ideals responsible for the establishment of the Hollywood Bowl? Or, in other words—to where are we drifting?”

In the end, however, Sinatra and “popular” music won out—he would be invited back every year for the foreseeable future. In his wake, singers like Nat King Cole, Peggy Lee, Ray Charles, and Bobby Darin followed. Cole, in particular, became a frequent collaborator with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, singing and playing the piano as Nelson Riddle conducted the orchestra alongside Cole’s trio. In his first five engagements with the orchestra, Cole drew a combined audience of more than 95,000 music lovers, and his shows came to further refine the concept of an orchestra pops concert, now with a popular singer at its center.

“From the moon-bathed tiers of venerable Hollywood Bowl, last night came the inconceivable—hysterical screams, pleading, sighs, whistles, endearments, gasps, agonized cries. … But all had one emotion in common— their feverish devotion to the little juke box johnnie, best expressed in the screams and cries and whistles that welled up from the amphitheater when Frankie finished each number. … All in all, it was a big night, best expressed by one breathless babe: ‘He sends me—and he leaves me there.’”

“Of all the jazz concerts I have given, I can’t recall in any the quiet thrill I experienced when I looked across the water that separated the Hollywood Bowl shell in which the musicians were to play and the more than 20,000 people who attended the concert. Suddenly, I felt that after all the talk, and true talk it was, about ‘jazz and the smoke-filled rooms’ and jazz’s roots in the work fields and the brothels, it was wonderful that evening to see that jazz finally found a proper place for itself, a sort of new dimension, where it could move great masses of people emotionally, and in a way, beautifully and peacefully.”

The Bowl’s most popular and enduring singing star, however, was neither Cole nor Sinatra. It was Ella Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald holds the rare distinction of having sold out the venue in each of fi ve decades, from the 1950s through the 1990s. Her ability to make the largest venue feel like the most intimate space changed what was possible for the Hollywood Bowl.

Fitzgerald, already an internationally touring artist, made her Bowl debut in August 1956, alongside Louis Armstrong. Legendary jazz impresario Norman Granz produced the show, recorded it, and released it on a double album titled Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl.

In his liner notes, Granz credits the magic of the Bowl as the key to the concert’s success, but listening to the album makes it clear that it was Fitzgerald who lit the fi re that night, bringing her joy, her passion, and her humor (at one point imitating Armstrong’s gravelly voice) to the

event. The Los Angeles Times sent its classical music reviewer, Albert Goldberg, to cover the program. Goldberg was at a rare loss for words to encapsulate Fitzgerald’s gifts: “We asked an aficionado how to describe her and the rapturous reply was, ‘Just say she is the most!’ We will go right along with that.” Goldberg added, “It was something like a cataclysm of nature and it had a tornadic efect. … Miss Fitzgerald alone was worth the price of admission.”

As jazz’s popularity in American music dipped in the 1970s, Fitzgerald continued to keep the flame alive, until the uniquely American genre found a permanent home at the Bowl with the inauguration of the Playboy Jazz Festival in 1979.

Fitzgerald, who lived in Los Angeles, was always eager to get back to the Bowl either at the Playboy Festival or at the LA Phil’s Jazz at the Bowl series, which began in 1980. Anne Parsons, former general manager of the Hollywood Bowl, recalled: “There were a lot of people who wouldn’t play outdoor venues, but they would play the Hollywood Bowl. Ella Fitzgerald, right down to when she could barely walk out on stage, made sure she played the Hollywood Bowl.” When she tripped and fell on stage in the middle of a 1986 concert, the full house of 18,000 gasped in unison; Fitzgerald had undergone a quintuple bypass surgery only a few months prior. Fortunately, she had just lost her footing. From the floor, she looked out to the audience and quipped, “People can really say, Ella fell for them,” before jumping right back into her song.

When Fitzgerald died in June 1996, it was the weekend of that year’s Playboy Jazz Festival. The event morphed into a two-day celebration of Fitzgerald’s legacy. Fans put up a banner near the Bowl entrance that read “ELLA WE MISS YOU.”

By the 1990s, the Hollywood Bowl’s performance calendar had

expanded to six nights per week. The demands on the Los Angeles Philharmonic were tremendous: the orchestra not only performed its own concerts but also collaborated with artists ranging from Fitzgerald to Garth Brooks to The B-52s.

So, in 1991, a second, completely distinct ensemble—the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra—was created.

John Mauceri, appointed the HBO’s first principal conductor, went on to lead the ensemble for 16 years and 323 concerts. Mauceri had already served as the director of the Washington Opera, the Teatro Regio in Turin, and the Scottish Opera. He struck the perfect balance between the “high” and “low” music that a Bowl conductor needs to command.

Mauceri did not just found a new orchestra; he built the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra into a premier ensemble with strengths all its own. Since many of the players were studio musicians who recorded film and television soundtracks, they were some of the

most heard but least visible musicians in the world. The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra changed that. With Mauceri, they toured to Japan and recorded more than a dozen albums. Mauceri recalled, “The music was enormously complex. We had to choose the dream oboist, trumpeter, and concertmaster … who could lead the Shostakovich Fifth and Animaniacs.” After Mauceri stepped down in 2006, the LA Phil took nearly two years to find the right person to replace him.

Growing up in an urban housing project in southern Virginia, Thomas Wilkins realized at the age of eight what he wanted to do with his life. His mother had taken him to a concert in Norfolk, where the young Wilkins heard the orchestra play “The StarSpangled Banner.” Watching the conductor shape the sound with his arms seemed like magic to him. Wilkins resolved then and there to dedicate his life to music. Since becoming principal conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in 2008,

Wilkins has begun every concert with the same piece that inspired him in the first place. The LA Phil’s leadership had approached Wilkins for the job because, like Mauceri, he possessed the ability to thrive in any genre of music. As Wilkins put it, “I’m a firm believer in no-labels music, and the Bowl is just like a giant version of how I live my life. We opened a couple of years ago with the “Sacrificial Dance” from The Rite of Spring, then we had John Legend and Stevie Wonder on. And the first thing Stevie said to me backstage was, ‘Man, that Stravinsky was rocking!’” In addition to his artistry, Wilkins

brings a unique charm to the Hollywood Bowl, harking back to conductors like Alfred Hertz, who established an immediate rapport with the Bowl’s audience. Wilkins addresses the audience between pieces, improvising based on the feeling of the evening. “There are some nights when I’m a professor, and there are other nights when I’m a comedian.”

The position of Creative Chair for Jazz was conceived to curate the Hollywood Bowl’s jazz shows. Renowned vocalist Dianne Reeves, who talks about growing up in the “living school of jazz,” became the inaugural creative chair in 2002.

Reeves cites the Bowl as the place where she learned her greatest lesson.

Reeves was succeeded as creative chair by Christian McBride, who handed the role to Herbie Hancock in 2010. All three have worked hand in hand with Hollywood Bowl General Manager Laura Connelly, who was hired in 1999 to help bring new artists and genres to the stage. Connelly worked with radio personality and producer Tom Schnabel to create a world music series in 1999. Most at the time thought world music was for a niche audience and required smaller, more intimate performance spaces.

Schnabel went before the LA Phil’s

“It was at the Playboy Jazz Festival. [Vocalist] Sarah Vaughan was performing after [jazz fusion band] Spyro Gyra. They finished their set, and the stage spins, of course, at the Playboy Festival, to bring on the next act. The people were just up out of their chairs, the sun had just gone down, and the atmosphere was buzzing. When I saw that Sarah was next, I thought ‘Wow, this is going to be interesting.’ And so, the stage spun around, and there she was on stage singing very low, ‘Summertime,’ and the audience was still kind of going crazy over Spyro Gyra. The sound of her voice. Just, oh so sweet. The fragrance just started to permeate the whole Bowl, and I watched that entire Bowl just be completely quiet. And as they got quiet, she got louder, and then it was just magic from there on. And then I thought, that was the greatest lesson I ever learned. It doesn’t matter. Be you; do you at all times.”

Board of Directors to make the case for bringing world music to the Bowl: “I put on a suit and tie and stood in front of these very serious-looking board members. Not a one of them cracked a smile, and I thought we were done for. What won them over was when I made the argument that there’s a lot of languages spoken here in Los Angeles, something like 200 languages, and the Hollywood Bowl should represent the speakers of each of those languages. And music is a good way to bridge cultures and also represent the diverse populations of Los Angeles.”

The series was an immediate success. KCRW signed on the following year and has maintained its sponsorship of the KCRW World Music Festival (now the KCRW Festival) ever since. When Indian singer-composer A.R. Rahman made his Hollywood Bowl debut in a sold-out Bollywood Night concert in 2006, thousands of spectators streamed in late. “It was actually a wonderful sign,” Schnabel recalled. “Because it meant that there were so many people who had never been to the Bowl before. Once inside, though, you could feel the energy, and the connection, and the magic, and I don’t think that could have happened anywhere but the Hollywood Bowl.”

No matter the genre, the Hollywood Bowl’s most efective concerts are those that foster a deeply personal

connection between artist and audience. In the words of Thomas Wilkins, “Once the sun sets, you can’t see the audience anymore. But you can feel them. You know they are there with you in that magical place.”

JOHN WILLIAMS AND THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

Across generations and continents, from movie theaters to concert halls around the world, the music of John Williams connects us all. Today, orchestras everywhere perform John Williams’ film music live. In the summer of 1977, it had never been done before. Ernest Fleischmann—then the LA Phil’s General Manager—changed that.

The orchestra was scheduled to travel with its music director, Zubin Mehta, to Japan for a tour, but the Japanese company promoting it went bankrupt, and the tour was canceled. Fleischmann suddenly needed to fill two weeks of the orchestra’s schedule. At the time, Star Wars fever was sweeping the nation. As Fleischmann later recalled:

“I saw the first Star Wars film over the opening weekend; I took the kids on [that] Sunday. I thought, ‘God, this score!’ It’s really the score and the sound efects that have made that movie what it was. It was almost Wagnerian. So, when we had this time on our hands, I asked John Williams whether it would be all right to do the Star Wars concert, and he certainly agreed, and Zubin learned the score. We got Laser Media to design a sort of laser program for it, and we advertised it, and of course by then, there was a lot of excitement about the film, and we managed to fill the Bowl. And there was a lot written about it.”

The Star Wars concert at the Bowl was a resounding success—so much so that Fleischmann booked two nights at Angel Stadium in Anaheim and re-created the concert there the following summer.

Fleischmann was convinced of Williams’ merit, not just as a composer but also as a conductor. In the late ’50s, John

Williams made his first appearance on the Hollywood Bowl stage when he was hired as an orchestra pianist to play with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. But Williams’ conducting debut wouldn’t happen for another two decades, first filling in for an ailing Arthur Fiedler in 1978 and, in the years that followed, conducting programs that focused on his own scores. As Williams recalled, taking that first step onto the conductor’s podium was the result of the persuasive Fleischmann.

“I said, ‘No, no, I don’t conduct in public. You have a very good conductor in Zubin Mehta. You don’t need me,’” Williams remembers. “I really didn’t think I could do it. But Ernest was a very imposing figure and very important impresario in the classical music world. If he said you should do something, you’d be foolish not to do it.”

Williams began conducting his music at the Bowl and around the world. He recently celebrated more than four decades of regular appearances since his first conducting appearance at the Bowl, greeted by an eager audience for three sold-out shows that brought more than 50,000 fans to their feet (many with lightsabers in hand).

One of those lightsaber-wielding fans at the Hollywood Bowl was Gustavo Dudamel, who was there to enjoy listening to the music of his boyhood and to share it with his own young son.

Williams and Dudamel have developed a close working relationship since Dudamel became Music & Artistic Director of the LA Phil. Williams helped mentor Dudamel when he composed the score for Alberto Arvelo’s 2013 film Libertador

Dudamel described Williams’ gifts eloquently when he joined him for a discussion about the art of film music: “Every note, every simple note that John puts in a score, is a universe. And that note will give us what we want to feel. In the end, this is the power of what he does.”

Williams—so impressed with Dudamel’s abilities and love for film music—ofered him the chance of a lifetime for a Star Wars fan: the opportunity to conduct the opening and closing music for 2015’s Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens

“I remember thinking, ‘He’s joking,’” Dudamel said. “John has such a wonderful sense of humor, and I somehow thought that there must be a catch. It turns out

there was: I couldn’t tell anyone!”

Williams turned 90 this past February, and the LA Phil is celebrating that milestone with the beloved annual Maestro of the Movies concerts (September 2–4), as well as the Walt Disney Concert Hall gala in September and an episode of the free streaming digital concert series Sound/Stage, which is available now.

Reflecting on the incredible legacy of his music, Williams is characteristically humble: “It isn’t the music. It isn’t the orchestra. It isn’t the composer or the audience. It’s the connection … the nexus … the linking of all this together. I’m just a composer who puts dots on the page. But when Gustavo conducts it, the orchestra plays it, the audience hears it … it’s the interconnection of all of these elements that makes music—music.”

Three new wineries significantly enhance the cachet of Temecula Valley; one has a swimming pool. by BENJAMIN EPSTEIN

ment to Akash—20 years old at the time and pursuing a business management/marketing degree.

“They presented it to me and basically said ‘If you want to do this, you’ll figure it out,’ ” Patel recalls. Their trust was well placed; Patel started making wine in 2014 and opened Akash Winery & Vineyards with winemaker Renato Sais in 2019.

Now 31, he produces Akash wines using estate-sourced Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, and Dreamville bottlings including a sparkling Sauvignon Blanc and a Malbec sourced nearby. Wines from both labels have earned Wine Enthusiast scores of 90 or more.

Tastings of flights take place inside and at vineyard-view patio bars. Neapolitan pizza is available Thursdays through Sundays; other experi ences include yoga on the patio. Sharing the patio is Akash Brewing, where offerings include a kettle sour using hibiscus and pineapple.

NINETY MINUTES SOUTH of Los Angeles, at the geographic heart of Southern California, is the picturesque Temecula Valley Wine Country, nearly 50 wineries nestled in rolling hills and anchored by Old Town Temecula. Three years ago, Wine Enthusiast magazine deemed it one of the world’s top wine travel destinations; distinctive new Altísima, Akash and Bottaia add to the allure.

/ Altísima / EIGHT FAMILIES joined to create Altísima Winery, a passion project that pays homage to the area’s Spanish roots through architecture, wines from Spanish grapes and Cal-Spanish restaurant Gaspar’s at the Vineyard, named for explorer Gaspar de Portolá.

Altísima opened in October. Wines include whites such as Albariño, labeled “the Soñadora,” and memorable reds including a Monastrell (known as Mourvèdre in France) and a Reserve Tempranillo.

It’s elegant and idyllic, with picturesque views in every direction.

The Gaspard’s patio and lawn beyond offer ideal vantages, with the backdrop of live music on weekends. Views elsewhere include a pair of neighboring wineries—Fazeli Cellars and Robert Renzoni Vineyards— whose own beauty adds to the scene.

Tasting options range from a one-hour seated experience to a tour of the estate with pairing of a half dozen wines and artisan cheeses. The olive grove is popular for private events.

Gaspar’s brings jamón serrano, Spanish olives and Catalan gambas— sauteed shrimp with a spicy saffron sauce and garlic confit—as well as a burger, made with a blend of Prime Black Angus short ribs and brisket plus bacon and Gruyère cheese, that has a bona fide following.

In 2010, his parents, immigrants who’d built a successful motel chain, took the first step in realizing that dream: They purchased a 20-acre parcel of vineyard land in Temecula Valley and entrusted its develop

Patel is also following in his parents’ hospitality footsteps: A resort on the property is in the works.

/ Bottaia / AFTER FARMING THE Brookside ranch since 1984, and operating the Ponte Vineyard since 2003, the Ponte family replanted Brookside’s most suitable blocks to Italian varietals from Aglianico to Zibibbo, built a stunning winery and in 2018 unveiled Bottaia.

The name means cask-aging room in Italian. Though best described as modern barns, Bottaia’s buildings are in fact inspired by Northern Italian luxury—the country houses of the Veneto designed by Andrea Palladio; his 16th-century principles dictated a temple-like main building.

Beyond the structures is a swimming pool with cabines and chaises and its own café and cocktail bar. The vineyards extend to the horizon.

Bottaia sources about a dozen single-varietal wines, notably Montepulciano, as well as blends from its 45-acre estate vineyards. Aging takes place in large concrete tanks and oak vats and casks.

The property offers several tasting experiences. Enjoy wines by the bottle, glass or flight on a deck overlooking the vineyards or in a livingroom-like lounge with soaring ceilings and striking vineyard views.

Taste six estate wines from the bottle and one from the barrel as part of a one-hour experience in the cozy barrel room or five estate wines and charcuterie in a cheery communal setting.

Let your passion be your guide, and join us as a member of the Friends and Patrons of the LA Phil. For more information, please call 213 972 7557.

Thanks to generous support from LA Phil Board member Irwin Winkler and Margo Winkler and an Anonymous donor, 1,800 tickets to 15 Hollywood Bowl concerts throughout the season are being provided to YOLA musicians and families.

Taking advantage of this initiative, the LA Phil’s season programming will be more deeply reflected in YOLA’s curriculum, allowing teaching artists and administrators to make connections between music taught in class and heard at concerts.
