WELCOME!

The holiday season is a great time to embrace time-honored traditions as well as create new ones. This month, we have many performances that offer cherished holiday celebrations to share with your loved ones as well as concerts that reimagine long-loved music with new points of view.

Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has become synonymous with the holidays since it first premiered 130 years ago. Gustavo Dudamel and the LA Phil released a celebrated recording of this masterful favorite a few years ago, and it’s always a musical treat to hear this work in concert. Similarly, it’s thrilling to hear Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn’s jazz transformation of Tchaikovsky’s ideas with both reverence and reinvention. Later this month, it’s the return of the Tristan Project, which channels Richard Wagner’s landmark opera and the ambition to combine multiple art forms into a revelatory multimedia experience with the help of Peter Sellars and Bill Viola—two incredible artists who exemplify Los Angeles’ creative spirit and with whom we are grateful to collaborate.

On that grateful note, I also want to thank you for being here and for supporting the LA Phil. Whether it’s concerts like the one you are about to see or the LA Phil’s learning programs like YOLA, everything we do is only possible because of the generous support of our audiences and donors. From our family to yours, we hope your holidays are filled with joy and music.

of legendary film composer John Williams with a Gala event. Further highlights with the LA Phil include a fall tour with performances at Carnegie Hall, Boston, and Mexico City and Guanajuato as part of the Cervantino Festival; a 10-day exploration of the piano/orchestral works of Rachmaninoff with Yuja Wang; and the return of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, directed by Peter Sellars, with video by Bill Viola.

— The New York Times’ Zachary Woolfe and Laura Cappelle

Gustavo Dudamel is driven by the belief that music has the power to transform lives, to inspire, and to change the world. Through his dynamic presence on the podium and his tireless advocacy for arts education, Dudamel has introduced classical music to new audiences around the globe and has helped to provide access to the arts for countless people in underserved communities. He currently serves as the Music & Artistic Director, Walt and Lilly Disney Chair, of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Music Director of the Opéra National de Paris and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.

Dudamel’s bold programming and expansive vision led The New York Times to herald the LA Phil as “the most important orchestra in America—period.” In the 2022/23 season, Dudamel and the LA Phil continue their visionary, multi-year Pan-American Music Initiative and celebrate the 90th birthday

Following his inaugural season as Music Director of the Paris Opera, the 2022/23 season features Dudamel leading productions of Puccini’s Tosca, Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, a new production of John Adams’ Nixon in China, and Thomas Adès’ Dante Project, choreographed by Wayne McGregor. Dudamel has led over 30 staged and semi-staged operas as well as concert productions across the world’s major stages, including five productions with Teatro alla Scala, productions at the Berlin and Vienna State Operas, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and 13 operas in Los Angeles, with repertoire ranging from Così fan tutte to Carmen, from Otello to Tannhäuser, from West Side Story to contemporary operas by composers like John Adams and Oliver Knussen. In April 2022, Dudamel conducted the LA Phil and a star-studded cast in a new production of Beethoven’s opera Fidelio, produced in collaboration with Los Angeles’ Tony Award®-winning Deaf West Theatre, Deaf performers of El Sistema Venezuela’s Coro de Manos Blancas (White Hands Choir), and the Dudamel Foundation.

Dudamel’s advocacy for the power of music to unite, heal, and inspire is global in scope. Shaped by his transformative experience as a youth in El Sistema,

Venezuela’s immersive musical training program, Dudamel with the LA Phil and its community partners founded YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) in 2007, now providing 1,500 young people with free instruments, intensive music instruction, academic support, and leadership training. In October 2021, YOLA opened its first permanent, purpose-built facility: The Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry. Dudamel also created the Dudamel Foundation in 2012 with the goal “to expand access to music and the arts for young people by providing tools and opportunities to shape their creative futures.”

One of the few classical musicians to become a bona fide pop-culture phenomenon, Dudamel was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2019, joining Hollywood greats as well as musical luminaries such as Leonard Bernstein, Duke Ellington, and Arturo Toscanini. He conducted the score to Steven Spielberg’s new film adaptation of Bernstein’s West Side Story and starred as the subject of the documentary ¡Viva Maestro!

Dudamel’s extensive, multipleGrammy Award®-winning discography numbers 65 releases, including recent Deutsche Grammophon LA Phil recordings of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, which won the Grammy® for Best Choral Performance, and the complete Charles Ives symphonies and Andrew Norman’s Sustain, which both won the Grammy Award® for Best Orchestral Performance.

For more information about Gustavo Dudamel, visit his official website at gustavodudamel.com and the Dudamel Foundation at dudamelfoundation.org.

“THE RARE CLASSICAL ARTIST TO HAVE CROSSED INTO POP-CULTURE CELEBRITY.”

LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the vibrant leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, presents an inspiring array of music through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. Both at home and abroad, the LA Phil—recognized as one of the world’s outstanding orchestras—is leading the way in groundbreaking and diverse programming, onstage and in the community, that reflects the orchestra’s artistry and demonstrates its vision. 2022/23 marks the orchestra’s 104th season.

More than 250 concerts are either performed or presented by the LA Phil at its three iconic venues: the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Ford, and the famed Hollywood Bowl. During its winter season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, with approximately 165 performances, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the audience’s experience of orchestral music. Since 1922, its summer home has been the worldfamous Hollywood Bowl, host to the finest artists from all genres

of music. Situated in a 32-acre park and under the stewardship of the LA Phil since December 2019, The Ford presents an eclectic summer season of music, dance, film, and family events that are reflective of the communities that comprise Los Angeles.

The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond its venues, with wide-ranging performances in the schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its influential and multifaceted learning initiatives is YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles), inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema. Through YOLA, the LA Phil and its community partners now provide free instruments, intensive music instruction, and leadership training to 1,500 students from underserved neighborhoods, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. In the fall of 2021, YOLA opened its own permanent, purpose-built facility: the Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, designed by architect Frank Gehry.

The orchestra also undertakes tours, both domestically and

internationally, including regular visits to New York, London (where the orchestra is the Barbican Centre’s International Orchestral Partner), Paris, and Tokyo. As part of its global Centennial activities, the orchestra visited Seoul, Tokyo, Mexico City, London, Boston, and New York. The LA Phil’s first tour was in 1921, and the orchestra has made annual tours since the 1969/70 season.

The LA Phil has released an array of critically acclaimed recordings, including world premieres of the music of John Adams and Louis Andriessen, along with Grammy Award®-winning recordings featuring the music of Johannes Brahms, Charles Ives, and Andrew Norman. Deutsche Grammophon has released a comprehensive box set in honor of the orchestra’s centennial.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded in 1919 by William Andrews Clark, Jr., a wealthy amateur musician. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, 10 renowned conductors have served in that capacity. Their names are Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929), Artur Rodziński (1929-1933), Otto Klemperer (1933-1939), Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956), Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959), Zubin Mehta (1962-1978), Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984), André Previn (1985-1989), Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009), and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

NEW DUDAMEL FELLOWS FOR 2022/23

Created in 2009, the Dudamel Fellowship Program provides a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil’s orchestral, learning, and community programs.

The four conductors selected for the program during the 2022/23 season are Rodolfo Barráez, Linhan Cui, Chloé Dufresne, and Luis Toro Araya.

Conducting Fellowship of the Verbier Festival, where he was assistant conductor to Charles Dutoit and Gianandrea Noseda, among others.

Gustavo Dudamel at such venues as La Scala in Milan, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Salzburg Festival, and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space.

A natural communicator with infectious charisma, Berlin-based Venezuelan conductor RODOLFO BARRÁEZ brings remarkable vivacity, sensitivity, and zeal to his artistry. As a Dudamel Fellow, in 2022/23 he leads the LA Phil in music by Stravinsky (January 21 & February 4), and the season also sees him joining the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as Associate Conductor.

In 2020, Barráez took Second Prize at the Inaugural SiemensHallé International Conductor Competition in Manchester, leading to immediate invitations from the Hallé. He was also awarded First Prize at the 2018 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México International Conducting Competition (OFUNAM).

Barráez earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Rodolfo made his European debut in 2019, leading the Hauptstadt Sinfonie at the Berlin Philharmonie. In the summer of 2022, he was selected to take part in the

His most recent guestconductor engagements include the Appassionato Orchestra at the 2022 Verbier Festival, Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias, the Hallé Orchestra, Konzerthausorchester Berlin, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra, Simón Bolívar Symphony, Bogotá Philharmonic, Yucatán Philharmonic, Querétaro Symphony Orchestra, UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra, and Minería Symphony Orchestra.

Future highlights include his debut at the Hollywood Bowl in a series of concerts with the LA Phil.

Strongly influenced by his own remarkable education as part of El Sistema under the guidance of José Antonio Abreu and Teresa Hernández, Rodolfo founded the Falcón Conducting Workshop, an organization that nurtures and supports the development of emerging conductors. As part of El Sistema Greece, Rodolfo also provided performance training to young musicians from underserved communities in Greece.

Rodolfo formed the core roots of his conducting career as an eminent violinist. Previously a member of the Teresa Carreño Symphony Orchestra, Rodolfo has performed under the batons of Simon Rattle, Claudio Abbado, and

Conductor LINHAN CUI has established herself as a soughtafter artist, winning second prize in the Malko International Conducting Competition in 2021. With natural expressivity at the core of her work, her experience includes performances with the Danish National Symphony, Korean Symphony, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras.

As a Dudamel Fellow, in the 2022/23 concert season she will be a cover conductor in addition to making her debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in works by Florence Price and Margaret Bonds (November 5 & 19).

During the 2019/20 season, Linhan was a Conducting Fellow at the Baltimore Symphony, where she had the privilege of serving as

“EACH YEAR, I CHERISH THE EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH OUR EXTRAORDINARY FELLOWS.... BRINGING THESE EMERGING TALENTS FROM ALL DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS TO LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC AND HAVING THE CHANCE TO WORK WITH THEM ONSTAGE AND IN THE COMMUNITY IS A CONSTANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND JOY. IT IS THE KIND OF WORK THAT HELPS US ALL GROW TOGETHER AS ARTISTS AND AS HUMANS.”

Marin Alsop’s cover conductor. As an assistant conductor, Linhan has worked with renowned conductors such as Leon Fleisher and Xian Zhang.

Cui was born in Shenyang, China, and began her piano studies at the age of four. She started conducting at age 18 as a student at the Xinghai Conservatory in China, where she completed her undergraduate studies.

Linhan holds a Master of Music degree from the Peabody Conservatory and is currently pursuing doctoral studies in orchestral conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, under the guidance of Arthur Fagen.

Sinfonietta, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Sinfonia Lahti, and Ensemble Intercontemporain.

Her professional projects led Dufresne to assist Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo at the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and the Kokkola Opera. She was also invited to conduct symphonic concerts with the Opéra de Rouen, Opéra National de Lorraine, and Paris Philharmonie, where she made her debut with the Orchestre Pasdeloup in 2020. A ROSE FOR LILLY

A walk through the shade and flowering trees of Walt Disney Concert Hall’s rooftop garden inevitably makes one pause at a blooming rose. Against the backdrop of the hall’s otherworldly steel façade, visitors pose in front of a fountain shaped from fragments of porcelain. What has become a shared public art stop for concertgoers and Los Angeles tourists started as a personal connection between just two people: Frank Gehry and Lillian Disney. —By Ricky O’Bannon

Disney had pledged $50 million toward constructing the new concert venue that would open in 2003, and Gehry visited her in her home to talk about his imaginative plans that would shape the now-iconic space.

On that visit, Gehry noticed a china cabinet that was full of imitation Royal Delft Blue vases that looked out of place in her beautiful home. When the architect asked about the knockoffs, Disney explained

that she and her husband Walt had a tradition of buying the imitations from airport souvenir shops during their many travels, and she loved to show them to friends to see if they could spot the fakes.

When Gehry was asked to create a tribute to Lillian Disney, he combined her love of Delft porcelain with her favorite flower to create the fountain titled A Rose for Lilly. Gehry works as an artist as much as he does as an architect. The sculptural style of his buildings is a distinctive feature of his work. Early in his career, Gehry created sculptures and furniture using inventive forms made from unexpected materials, such as corrugated The

“I love it because it’s not architectural—it’s almost sentimental. It’s not something you would expect from the famous contemporary architect,” Tomas Osinski told the Los Angeles Times in 2003. Osinski was tasked by Gehry to oversee the construction of the fountain, translating Gehry’s 14-inch model into an installation measuring 22 feet wide by 17 feet long and 7 feet high. “I called Delft, in Holland, and they asked me how many vases I wanted,” Osinski said. “They told me that I may have to wait about 10 years.”

Fortunately for the project, Osinski and Gehry were able to persuade Royal Delft to provide the 200 vases on their timeline. To construct the fountain, Osinski assembled a team of eight artists, including his wife, Ewa Osinska. This team collectively shaped rebar to form the skeleton of the rose petals, attached steel mesh onto the rebar, packed reinforced concrete onto the mesh, applied mortar, and broke the 200 Delft porcelain vases and more than 10,000 tiles to create a quarter-ofa-million mosaic fragments.

The construction of the fountain was tedious work and a race against time to be ready for the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall. The eight artists worked eight-hour days, six days a week, building the shape and placing each fragment. The artists also left behind little Easter eggs for any visitors who closely inspect the fountain. Hidden among the thousands of Delft fragments are 60 hand-drawn shards that bear artist initials, playful drawings, and one illustration depicting Frank Gehry.

AT A GLANCE

Beloved Tradition, Inspired Update

The Nutcracker began its ascent to holiday hegemony in the heady years after World War II. Recognizing a trove of seasonal “standards” fresh for updating when they heard it, American bandleaders were actually ahead of the curve, forging an earthy parallel tradition inspired more by Fantasia (1940) than ballet. There were at least four dance band recordings of Nutcracker suites before Duke Ellington took his band into an L.A. studio in the

summer of 1960 with the arrangements he and Billy Strayhorn had made of Tchaikovsky’s music. (These traditions merged in 1996 when choreographer Donald Byrd used Ellington’s version as the basis for his popular Harlem Nutcracker.) At this concert, we have it both ways: the complete Act I (and the climax of Act II) in Tchaikovsky’s evergreen original, plus selections from Ellington’s Suite in Jeff Tyzik’s adaptation for full orchestra. —John Henken

Overture, Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed Pipes), Dance of the Floreadors (Waltz of the Flowers), Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy): December 3, 2022, Gustavo Dudamel conducting

Our midwinter holidays bring light into the darkest days of the year, each in their own ways—but music always casts the warmest glow. The Christmas Eve setting of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker has helped it to become one of America’s most beloved Christmas traditions (we can thank the San Francisco Ballet of the 1940s), even though the composer had nothing of the sort in mind. By 1960, the potential appeal of updating Tchaikovsky’s score was obvious enough to a savvy musician like Duke Ellington. Although separated by a century, the demands of the Romantic-era Russian ballet and the elaborate stage shows of New York City’s Cotton Club in the late 1920s presented similar challenges to Tchaikovsky and Ellington. The need for variety was paramount, meaning constant shifts in

P6 PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE
ABOUT THE PROGRAM

musical mood and style, but at the same time continuity was necessary. Exoticism was an audience favorite in both settings, and each composer had to take into account the choreography, making sure rhythms and tempos would allow the dancers to show their skills to the best effect.

The overtures in each case set the tone and show the range of timbre, volume, and articulation possible in each of their respective orchestras. Both are also elegant and balanced, whether in terms of the classicism that Tchaikovsky gleaned from Mozart and Haydn or the carefully calibrated swing of Ellington’s band. What typically follows in any concert performance of Tchaikovsky’s music is a selection from among the “characteristic dances,” which contrast style, tempo, and orchestration in order to conjure the various members of the court of the Sugar Plum Fairy. As most conductors do, Ellington selected some, but not all, of these dances in order to show off the members of his band.

Ellington’s “Toot Toot Tootie Toot” is the closest to its source material, although the innovations set the tone for what is to come. Where Tchaikovsky had piping flutes and bassoons over a quiet string ostinato, Ellington has the reed section divided into clarinets and saxes in close alternation, over a relaxed groove in the rhythm section, with more forceful interjections from the brass. The melancholy, resonant

English horn solo becomes a series of broad smears with cup mutes in the trombones. Where the middle portion of Tchaikovsky’s dance is an exoticized whirling dervish, with trumpets over an ostinato in the low strings and brass, Ellington instead lets the band break out into an improvisatory section with the clarinet in the lead.

The two marches also make for an interesting comparison— similar in spirit but executed on their own terms. Tchaikovsky’s quick marche militaire is all about precision of articulation and brilliance in figuration and orchestration. Although the brightness of trumpet also figures in Ellington’s “Peanut Brittle Brigade,” the virtuosity shines through most clearly in a series of up-tempo, boppish solo choruses for trumpet, clarinet, tenor sax, and piano.

Tchaikovsky’s indifference to his own score for The Nutcracker is famous, but the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” allowed him to showcase a new instrument that fascinated him—the celesta—making it

perhaps the only part of the score he was pleased with. The twinkling, ethereal sound of the instrument, accompanied only by delicate pizzicatos, does make for a magical atmosphere—and it is here that Ellington and Strayhorn part ways with Tchaikovsky in all but the melody they borrowed. Over a slow vamp from the drummer, using the evocative toms, the tenor saxophone struts through “Sugar Rum Cherry,” encouraged by occasional smears and growls in the brass.

The blistering trepak of Tchaikovsky’s Russian Dance becomes the energetic bounce of the “Volga Vouty.” In another reversal, Tchaikovsky’s graceful but somewhat melancholy and restrained “Waltz of the Flowers” becomes an opportunity for almost every member of the band to have a virtuosic turn in the rousing series of swing choruses that make up “Dance of the Floreadores.”

PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P9 DECK THE HALL

Every Christmas on the Balearic island of Mallorca, singers at the cathedral of Palma de Mallorca and those at the monastery of Lluc perform a Christmas play with origins that date back to the earliest days of Christianity. The “Song of the Sibyl,” or “Cant de la Sibil.la” in Catalan, is based on an ancient Greek prophecy from the Erythraean Sibyl foretelling the coming of the Messiah. The earliest version of the prophecy was written down by Eusebius of Caesarea (d. c. 340), and the first musical setting of the text appears in the early 10th-century codex of St. Martial de Limoges. This chant uses a Latin translation by St. Augustine: “Iudicii signum: tellus sudore madescet” (“Sign of judgment: the earth grows wet with sweat”). The chant spread widely throughout Medieval Europe, making its way to France, Italy, and Spain. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Latin text was translated into local vernaculars, including the Catalan version, “Al jorn del judici,” which is still sung to this day.

Typically, the solo chant verses are separated by choral restatements of the first verse. Many composers have arranged versions of this refrain, including the Spanish Renaissance composers Bartolomé Cárceres (fl. 1546) and Cristóbal de Morales (c. 1500–1553). In our program, we perform the refrain by Cárceres and the ravishing Advent motet “Ecce virgo concipiet” by Morales, which sets prophetic texts from the Book of Isaiah (7:14).

Sibylline prophecies also feature in a set of highly chromatic motets by the Franco-Flemish master Orlande de Lassus (1532–1594). Though not published until after his death, his Prophetiae Sibyllarum is likely the work of a 20-something Lassus showcasing and exploring his mastery of tonality. Each movement, including “Sibylla Europaea” and “Sibylla Tiburtina,” is a brief and intense

exploration of chromatic voice leading. Most of the sonorities are root-position triads, and most of the part-writing is homophonic. Their unearthly mysticism is brought about almost exclusively through unexpected chromatic twists that foreshadow the intense expressionism of Carlo Gesualdo a generation later.

“Recordare Jesu pie” demonstrates the more conventional side of Lassus. Here, expressive chromaticism gives way to expressive polyphony with a text from the Requiem liturgy. Perhaps a curious choice for a Christmas program, “Recordare Jesu pie” is a stanza from the “Dies irae,” which prophesies the final day of judgment “teste David cum Sibylla,” or, “as David prophesied with the Sibyl.”

Born in Ávila, Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548–1611) moved to Rome as a teenager to study music. Here he likely interacted, and perhaps even studied, with Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina. After making a name for himself and publishing at least seven books of polyphony, he moved back to Spain in 1587 to take a post at the royal Monasterio de las Descalzas de Santa Clara in Madrid, where he served until the end of his life. His motet “Ecce Dominus veniet” is an antiphon for the first Sunday of Advent. The text is based on a passage from the Old Testament that can be interpreted as a prophecy for the birth of Jesus (Zechariah 14:5-6). This work and the Christmas motet “O Regem caeli” showcase Victoria’s refined and joyful compositional style. Duets and trios come through the texture, and harmonic pillars give an almost tonal structure to the works. This is expertly crafted, high Renaissance polyphony.

If Victoria is the most famous Spanish composer from the Renaissance, then Francisco Guerrero (1528–1599) is likely the second most famous. Born in Seville, he spent most of his life

working at the Seville Cathedral, first as a singer and then as the choirmaster. Unlike Victoria, Guerrero wrote many secular songs. “A un niño llorando” and “Oy, Joseph” both come from his 1589 publication Canciones y villanescas espirituales, a collection of brief sacred songs written in the style of the typically secular Spanish villancico Villancicos are often spirited and dance-like, featuring frequent rhythmic interplay between duple and triple meter. They consist of a series of verses (coplas) sandwiched between a recurring refrain (estribillo).

“E la don don” and “Ríu, ríu, chíu” are also villancicos. The former is an anonymous setting of a Catalan text that asks us to dance and sing for joy at Christ’s birth. “Ríu, ríu, chíu” sets a Spanish text and is likely the only villancico that has maintained its widespread popularity from the 1500s—even The Monkees recorded a version of it for television back in 1967. It is attributed to the Catalan Renaissance composer Mateo Flecha (1481–1553). In Spanish, “ríu” is a nonsense syllable. In Catalan, “ríu” means river.

We conclude the first half of our program with two traditional Catalan Christmas carols. “El noi de la mare” is a simple and sweet folk tune arranged by the 20th-century choir director and Barcelona native Enrique Ribó. “Fum, fum, fum” could be an onomatopoeic title referencing the sound of a guitar or the beat of a drum. “Fum” also translates to “smoke” in Catalan, so perhaps this song alludes to the familiar winter tropes of warmth and fires. The arrangement we perform tonight, written for us by our music director Tim Keeler, showcases the many different sides of Chanticleer.

The “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl (1906–2001) has become synonymous with Chanticleer. Every Christmas season we look forward to sharing this gem with our audiences around the country. Biebl’s setting is actually

a version of the “Angelus,” a Catholic devotional prayer, which tells the story of the annunciation and incarnation. WALKING IN THE AIR

Howard Blake (b. 1938), arr. Adam Ward

We’re walking in the air, we’re floating in the moonlit sky; the people far below are sleeping as we fly.

I’m holding very tight, I’m riding in the midnight blue, I’m finding I can fly so high above with you.

Far across the world the villages go by like dreams, the rivers and the hills, the forest and the streams...

Children gaze open-mouthed, taken by surprise; nobody down below believes their eyes!

We’re surfing in the air, we’re swimming in the frozen sky, we’re drifting over icy mountains floating by.

Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep, rousing up a mighty monster from its sleep...

We’re walking in the air, we’re dancing in the midnight sky, and everyone who sees us greets us as we fly.

WHITE CHRISTMAS, FROM HOLIDAY INN

Irving Berlin (1888–1989), arr. Sanford Dole

The sun is shining, the grass is green, the redwood and oak trees sway. There’s never been such a day in San Francisco, CA. But it’s December twenty-fourth, and I am longing to be up north…

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas just like the ones I used to know. Where the treetops glisten and children listen to hear sleigh bells in the snow.

I’m dreaming of a white Christmas with every Christmas card I write. May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be white.

Text by Irving Berlin, with additional lyrics by Sanford Dole

Merry Christmas, darling. We’re apart that’s true, but I can dream, and in my dreams I’m Christmasing with you.

Holidays are joyful, there’s always something new. But every day’s a holiday when I’m near to you.

The lights on my tree I wish you could see, I wish it every day. Logs on the fire fill me with desire to see you and to say…

That I wish you Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, too. I’ve just one wish On this Christmas eve: I wish I were with you.

MERRY CHRISTMAS, DARLING

Richard Carpenter (b. 1946), arr. Andy Van Allsburg

It came upon a midnight clear That glorious song of old From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold…

Greeting cards have all been sent, the Christmas rush is through. But I still have one wish to make, a special one for you…

God from true God, and Light from Light eternal, born of a virgin, to earth he comes! Only-begotten Son of God the Father:

HOME ALONE IN CONCERT

This beloved holiday favorite features renowned composer John Williams’ charming and delightful score performed live to picture. Since its debut in 2013, Home Alone in Concert has become a seasonal favorite with orchestras and audiences around the world!

Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, an eight-year-old boy who’s accidentally left behind when his family leaves for Christmas vacation and who must defend his home against two bungling thieves (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern). Also starring Catherine O’Hara and John Candy, and nom inated for two Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (“Somewhere in My Memory”), Home Alone is hilarious, heart-warming holiday fun for the entire family!

COMPOSER’S NOTE

“Ever since Home Alone appeared, it has held a unique place in the affections of a very broad public. Director Chris Columbus brought a uniquely fresh and innocent approach to this delightful story, and the film has deservedly become a perennial at holiday time.

I know I speak for everyone connected with the making of the film in saying that we are greatly honored by this event… and I hope that today’s audience will experience the renewal of joy that the film brings with it, each and every year.” —John Williams

ARTURO SANDOVAL

A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to introduce Latin influences into American jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of 12, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist, and composer.

Sandoval has garnered 10 Grammy® Awards and was nominated 19 times. He has also received six Billboard Awards and an Emmy® Award, the latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of For Love or Country, the HBO movie based on his life, which starred Andy Garcia as Arturo.

His album Ultimate Duets, features an incomparable who’s who of the most talented artists working today. This landmark album also contains an unparalleled mix of collaborations with legends and new-generation voices from the worlds of pop, jazz, classical, and Latin music, coming together for the Cuban maestro’s first duets release, including Stevie Wonder, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande, Plácido Domingo, Celia Cruz, Josh Groban, Juan Luis Guerra, Al Jarreau, Alejandro Sanz, Prince Royce, and David Bisbal. His most recent album is Christmas at Notre Dame, featuring several of the school’s music ensembles.

Sandoval was a founding member of the Grammy Awardwinning group Irakere, whose explosive mixture of jazz, classical, rock, and traditional Cuban music caused a sensation throughout the entertainment world. In 1981, he left Irakere to form his own band, which garnered enthusiastic praise from critics and audiences all over the world and continues to do so.

Sandoval is also a renowned classical musician, performing regularly with the leading symphony orchestras from around the world. He has composed his own Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra, which can be heard on Arturo Sandoval: The Classical Album. Arturo has performed with the foremost orchestras in the country as well as abroad and recorded John Williams’ Trumpet Concerto with the London Symphony Orchestra. His classical artistry has earned him the respect and admiration

of the most prestigious conductors, composers, and symphony orchestras worldwide.

His compositions can also be heard in movies, including Clint Eastwood’s The Mule, as well as 1001 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story, At Middleton, Dave Grusin’s soundtracks for Havana and Random Hearts, in The Mambo Kings soundtrack with his Grammy-nominated composition “Mambo Caliente,” in the soundtracks of The Perez Family, 61, and Mr. Wrong, the documentary Oscar, and The Family Fuentes. He also was commissioned by the Kennedy Center to compose the music for the ballets Pepito’s Story and Soul Possessed, as well as Oman O Men, and The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker

A 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and an honorary doctorate recipient from the University of Notre Dame, Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles while in Cuba and since his defection have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. One frequently speaks of Sandoval’s virtuoso technical ability or his specialty in high notes, but those who have seen him at the keyboard, lyrically improvising a ballad, or who have had the opportunity to enjoy the diversity of his music, through his compositions from the most straight-ahead jazz, Latin jazz, or classical work, know that Arturo Sandoval is one of the most brilliant, multifaceted, and renowned musicians of our time.

LAGUNA BEACH, C A

Jackiw Isidore String Quartet

Jeremy Denk, MacArthur “Genius” Award-winner and recipient of the Avery Fisher Prize, will serve as the 2023 Laguna Beach Music Festival Artistic Director. One of Americaʼs foremost pianists, Denk has been proclaimed by The New York Times as “a pianist you want to hear no matter what he performs.”

JEREMY DENK & STEFAN JACKIW: HYMNS, SONGS, AND SONATAS

Experience the musical languages of Charles Ives and Johannes Brahms, performed by Jeremy Denk and Stefan Jackiw. In between the Ives Sonatas, chorus members will intersperse popular hymns which the sonatas are based upon. Preceding Brahms’ Sonata No. 1, his Regenlied (“Rain Song”) from Lieder, Op. 59, will be performed by Jeremy Denk and soloist.

Jeremy Denk shares a unique program that contrasts Bach and Beethoven with American works that spotlight overlooked composers. Program to include works by: J.S. Bach, Schubert, “Blind Tom” Wiggins, Scott Joplin, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Rzewski, and Beethoven.

3PM | LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE

JEREMY DENK & FRIENDS
