WELCOME
WELCOME TO THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL! On behalf of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, welcome back to those who join us every summer, and for those of you here for the first time, we hope to see you often in the future. This year the LA Phil celebrates its 96th season at the Hollywood Bowl and Gustavo Dudamel’s eighth season as the orchestra’s Music & Artistic Director. Dudamel will conduct more concerts than ever at the Bowl, with a wide range of programs from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (the work he conducted at the Hollywood Bowl in his first concert as Music Director) to a night with Tony Bennett, and from the Stars of Ballet to Sondheim on Sondheim. The Hollywood Bowl season is always wide-ranging and diverse, featuring the best of classical, jazz, world music, Broadway, and popular music, and this year is no exception. This summer we will see the debuts of conductor Rafael Payare and violinist Pekka Kuusisto as well as Bryan Ferry, Gipsy Kings, Blood Orange, Gente de Zona, and Leslie Odom, Jr. Add these to our popular film events, Yo-Yo Ma, Diana Krall, Phoenix, Jill Scott, Kool and the Gang, Pink Martini, and other favorites, and we are all in for a star-studded, fantastically fun summer! We are thrilled to welcome back Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Thomas Wilkins in his tenth season at the Bowl, conducting projects from July 4th to the Muppets Take the Bowl. And thrilled too that legendary musician Herbie Hancock, in his eighth season as the LA Phil’s Creative Chair for Jazz, will appear on stage with L.A.’s own Kamasi Washington. As you entered the Bowl tonight you will have noticed dramatic improvements, beginning with the Main Plaza. This plaza has been transformed with a grand trellis tying together a modern box office, a redesigned Bowl Store, and an entirely new Marketplace, all inspired by the 1920s moderne style of the Hollywood Bowl. Above the new building, the expanded terrace picnic area is a wonderful option for pre-concert picnicking with its beautiful views of the hills. You will also notice the expansion of our mid-gate entrance, with a tree-lined walkway and additional entrance gates. The LA Phil strives to have something new to add to your experience at the Bowl each year and we know you will enjoy these new facilities! In addition to the new Marketplace in the Main Plaza, Hollywood Bowl Food + Wine, whose first season at the Bowl was last summer, continues to expand their delicious offerings with new items, including pizza and barbeque! We encourage you to give them a try. As always, we extend our thanks and deep gratitude to all members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the County Chief Executive Office, the Department of Parks and Recreation, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. We acknowledge our foundation, corporate, and media partners, and all our donors, who provide such immense support to each concert you enjoy on the Bowl stage. The Los Angeles Philharmonic is so proud to be responsible for the stewardship of this beautiful Los Angeles County Park which has been the orchestra’s summer home for almost a century. We are honored to annually host artists in all genres of music that bring together so many people from around Los Angeles and the world. Thank you for continuing this extraordinary tradition with us. Welcome back, and enjoy the show! Gail Samuel Acting President and Chief Executive Officer Los Angeles Philharmonic Association

A MESSAGE FROM SUPERVISOR SHEILA KUEHL
I am delighted to welcome you all to our wonderful Hollywood Bowl. This Summer 2017 concert season sets out a rich and varied lineup of pop, jazz, classical, Broadway, and, of course, fireworks! I am the proud steward of many great public institutions in L.A. County, but the Bowl is very special to me. As the largest natural outdoor amphitheater in the country, and one of the jewels in our renowned collection of unique and celebrated arts venues, the Bowl is an architectural icon in its own right. For nearly 100 years, residents and visitors have come to the Bowl to enjoy these incredible performances under the stars. I have been coming here every summer since I can remember, and there are few things I love more than a summer night at the Bowl – good food and music with friends and family. So, whether you are a long-time or first-time concertgoer, add to your storehouse of great Bowl memories by making some new ones tonight. They will last you a lifetime! Thank you so much for your support. I am proud and grateful to have been given the opportunity to represent and serve the District that contains this great Los Angeles icon. My best to everyone for an enjoyable program! Sheila Kuehl Supervisor, Third District County of Los Angeles

GUSTAVO DUDAMEL As an internationally renowned symphonic and operatic conductor, Gustavo Dudamel is motivated by a profound belief in music’s power to unite and inspire. He currently serves as Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Music Director of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, and the impact of his leadership extends from the greatest concert stages to classrooms, cinemas, and innovative digital platforms around the world. Dudamel also appears as guest conductor with some of the world’s most famous musical institutions: in 2017, he tours Europe with the Berlin Philharmonic and is the youngest-ever conductor to lead the Vienna Philharmonic’s famous New Year’s Day Concert, watched annually by over 50 million people in 90 countries. In his eighth season as Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel has extended his contract to the end of the 2021/22 season. At his initiative, the Los Angeles Philharmonic has dramatically expanded the scope of its community outreach programs, including most notably the creation of Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA), influenced by the philosophy of Venezuela’s admired El Sistema, which encourages social development through music. With YOLA and diverse local educational initiatives, Dudamel brings music to children in underserved communities of Los Angeles. These programs have in turn inspired similar efforts throughout the United States, as well as in Sweden (Hammarkullen) and Scotland (Raploch). In his 18th season as Music Director of the entire El Sistema project in Venezuela, he continues to lead the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra in Venezuela as well as on tour. Recordings, broadcasts, and digital innovations are also fundamental to Dudamel’s passionate advocacy for universal access to music. A Deutsche Grammophon artist since 2005, Grammywinner Gustavo Dudamel has numerous recordings on the label, as well as many video/DVD releases that capture the
excitement of significant moments of his musical life. He has independently produced an all-Wagner recording available exclusively for download, among others. Gustavo Dudamel is one of the most decorated conductors of his generation. He received the Americas Society Cultural Achievement Award in 2016, and the 2014 Leonard Bernstein Lifetime Achievement Award for the Elevation of Music in Society from the Longy School. In 2013 he was named Musical America’s Musician of the Year and inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame. Other awards include the
2010 Eugene McDermott Award in the Arts at MIT; 2009 Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres; being named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people; and the 2008 “Q” Prize from Harvard. Additionally, he has received several honorary doctorates. He was born in 1981 in Venezuela, and access to music for all has been the cornerstone of Gustavo’s philosophy both professionally and philanthropically. LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the leadership of Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, is invested in a tradition of the new, through a commitment to foundational works and adventurous explorations. Both at home and abroad, the LA Phil is leading the way in ground-breaking programming, and enters its 99th season this fall. More than 250 concerts are either performed or presented by the LA Phil each season at its two iconic venues: Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. During its 30-week season from September to June at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil creates festivals, artist residencies, and other thematic programs designed to enhance the symphonic music experience and delve further into certain artists’ or composers’ work. The organization’s commitment to the music of our time is evident throughout the programming and its extensive commissioning initiatives. Since 2003, the LA Phil’s home has been the inimitable Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, which embodies the energy, imagination, and creative spirit of
the city of Los Angeles and its orchestra. Praise for both the design and the acoustics of the Hall has been effusive. The orchestra’s involvement with Los Angeles extends far beyond symphony concerts in a concert hall, with performances in schools, churches, and neighborhood centers of a vastly diverse community. Among its wide-ranging education initiatives is Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA). Inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema, the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 700 students from underserved neighborhoods. The orchestra also undertakes tours, both domestically and internationally, including regular visits with partners in New York, Paris, and Tokyo, among others. The Philharmonic has been an International Associate at London’s Barbican Centre since 2009. The orchestra’s very first tour was in 1921, and it has made annual tours beginning with the 1969/70 season. Always inspired to expand its cultural offerings, each season at Walt Disney
Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl the LA Phil produces concerts featuring distinguished artists in many genres and formats, including jazz and world music. Through an ongoing partnership with Deutsche Grammophon, the orchestra has a substantial catalog of concerts available online. In 2011, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel won a Grammy for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of the Brahms Symphony No. 4. The Los Angeles Philharmonic was founded by William Andrews Clark, Jr., who established the city’s first permanent symphony orchestra in 1919. Walter Henry Rothwell became its first Music Director, serving until 1927; since then, ten renowned conductors have served in that capacity: Georg Schnéevoigt (1927-1929); Artur Rodzinski (1929-1933); Otto Klemperer (1933-1939); Alfred Wallenstein (1943-1956); Eduard van Beinum (1956-1959); Zubin Mehta (1962-1978); Carlo Maria Giulini (1978-1984); André Previn (1985-1989); Esa-Pekka Salonen (1992-2009); and Gustavo Dudamel (2009-present).

A PARTICULAR SENSE OF MAGIC A John Williams Portrait BY JON BURLINGAME John Williams long ago transcended the standard career model for movie composers. Not only has the 85-year-old maestro written the iconic themes for Jaws, Star Wars, E.T., Harry Potter, and other classics, he has become a familiar figure on the global music scene, for both his film music and his growing body of work written specifically for the concert hall. This summer’s Hollywood Bowl schedule offers a case study in modern Williams appreciation, with live-to-picture Los Angeles Philharmonic performances of two Harry Potter films (Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban, second and third in the series) and Raiders of the Lost Ark, a performance of his Violin Concerto featuring Gil Shaham, and the annual end-of-summer concerts conducted by Williams himself. “It’s an amazing career,” says David Newman, who will conduct Raiders at the Bowl on Aug. 4 and 5 and share the podium with Williams during the weekend of Sept. 1-3. “He is the pioneer of what’s going on now, straddling popular culture and the more intellectual classical music world.” As a studio violinist during the late 1970s and early 1980s, Newman played on Williams’ original scores for Jaws 2, 1941, and E.T. Now as a conductor, he regularly leads major symphony orchestras in Williams’ scores for E.T., Raiders, and Home Alone. “The needs of the movie can be populist,” he points out, “but there is always other music that isn’t hummable or tuneful but needs to be there in order to tell the story. John’s music is head and shoulders above everyone else in understanding this aspect of contemporary film music.” Newman cites Williams’ 1980 – 1993 tenure as music director for the Boston Pops Orchestra, its television exposure via
PBS broadcasts, and his increased profile as a conductor, laying the foundation for today’s popularity of movie music in American concert halls. “John did the Pops not just for a year or two, and not for a lark,” he adds. “That had a huge impact on what’s happening now, as all these orchestras are playing film music.” While Williams was writing timeless themes like Jaws and Star Wars, he was also composing music that didn’t require pictures. His Violin Concerto, which dates from the mid-1970s and was revised in 1998, is among his best-known of these works, although his output in recent years has also encompassed concerti for cello, viola, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, horn, and harp. Violinist Shaham – whose professional collaboration with Williams dates back many
years, to Boston in the 1990s – told Chicago’s WFMT that “there is something magical about his music. He has this incredible, chameleon-like proficiency. He can write anything. Yet he is always so self-effacing and modest. “He is able to translate feelings into notes in such a masterful way,” Shaham adds, citing the Violin Concerto as just one example of Williams’ brilliance. Originally dedicated to his late wife Barbara Ruick, “it’s a very somber piece,” Shaham notes, “very different from the scores that we know from Star Wars or E.T. or Raiders of the Lost Ark. But it does what great music should: it takes you on a journey. It’s a narrative, from the first note to the very last chord. It’s storytelling through music.” continued on pg. 30

“City National helps keep my financial life in tune.” So much of my life is always shifting; a different city, a different piece of music, a different ensemble. I need people who I can count on to help keep my financial life on course so I can focus on creating and sharing the “adventures” of classical music. City National shares my passion and is instrumental in helping me bring classical music to audiences all over the world. They enjoy being a part of what I do and love. That is the essence of a successful relationship. City National is The way up® for me.

Justin Freer, who founded CineConcerts and has been conducting the first three Harry Potter films around the country for the past year, calls the original Potter “one of the most iconic scores written in the last several decades. John captures a particular sense of magic that is supported by the film, and the film is supported by the music. He has an amazing ability to get to the very core of the characters via melody. His textures and rhythms and timbres all come along with it.” But, Freer adds, “music can and should be about something more than the vehicle to which it’s connected,” and he likens Williams’ career to that of another giant of 20th-century music, Leonard Bernstein, who also composed for the stage, screen, and concert hall. Like Bernstein, Freer notes, Williams has often written for special occasions – and the celebratory “Sound the Bells!”, which the Philharmonic is also performing this summer, was penned in 1993 for the marriage of Japan’s Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako Owada. “If there’s anything John Williams has taught us,” Freer says, “it’s that if music is to be remembered, it will be remembered because it’s good. John is an American musical icon not because of the genre he happens to be writing for, but for what he writes. Great music is great music irrespective of genre.” Jon Burlingame writes about film music for Variety and teaches film-music history at the University of Southern California.

FROM THE LA PHIL
DEBORAH BORDA STEPS DOWN AS PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC In March, Los Angeles Philharmonic Board Chairman Jay Rasulo announced that Deborah Borda is stepping down from her position as President and Chief Executive Officer to become President and CEO of the New York Philharmonic starting September 15, 2017. The search for a new President began immediately, conducted by a committee led by Rasulo. To ensure a seamless transition, LA Phil Executive Director Gail Samuel has been named Acting President and Chief Executive Officer. “We want to thank Deborah Borda for 17 years of extraordinary service and for leading the Los Angeles Philharmonic to incredible success in so many areas,” said Rasulo. “The prominence and exciting reputation which the LA Phil currently enjoys around the world is due in large part to her visionary and powerful leadership, along with the dedicated work of the two music directors with whom she worked, the orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association staff. We all wish her well in her future endeavors.” “It is hard to believe that it has really been 17 years since I came to L.A.,” Borda said. “But what a 17 years it has been! With the support of our superb musicians, board, and staff, the LA Phil has boldly defined a way forward for musical organizations throughout the globe. My gratitude is profound. I especially express my deepest thanks and admiration to my partner for now almost the past decade, Gustavo Dudamel. Leaving him and, indeed, my LA Phil family is not easy, but my solace is in returning to my home and my family. I have been blessed to work with such courageous and loving partners. The institution is in a robust and healthy state both artistically
and financially and is wonderfully positioned to continue to make history... and it will!” “Deborah and I have come such a long way together in the last ten years, and it has been a truly productive road that we have traveled,” said Gustavo Dudamel, Music & Artistic Director. “Together we have fought for music education and community, and she believes, as do I, in breaking down walls, not building them. We will miss her energy, vision and spirit... and also her loving and caring presence!”
HERBIE HANCOCK EXTENDS JAZZ CREATIVE CHAIR TENURE In May the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announced a one-year extension of Herbie Hancock’s contract as the William Powers and Carolyn Powers Creative Chair for Jazz through the Hollywood Bowl 2018 season and the 2018/19 season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Under his guidance the Los Angeles Philharmonic has offered jazz programming from around the world, with artists such as Christian McBride, Wayne Shorter, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Miller, Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club, Quincy Jones, Esperanza Spalding, Bobby McFerrin, and more. The upcoming seasons present a diverse blend of new jazz stars and beloved greats such as Jill Scott, Kamasi Washington, Trombone Shorty, John Beasley Presents MONK’estra, Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra & Chick Corea, and Hancock himself. “I’m thrilled to continue collaborating with the LA Phil on jazz programming at the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall,” says Hancock. “The organization’s vision of what makes a great live music performance truly aligns with my own, and I look forward to extending this partnership and continuing to present today’s best jazz artists.” “Herbie Hancock’s ongoing legacy as a visionary in the world of jazz continues to inspire the LA Phil’s jazz series each
season,” says Gail Samuel, Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of the LA Phil. “We’re so privileged to have had his partnership over the last eight years and counting.”
LA PHIL RECEIVES INNOVATION GRANT FROM LEAGUE OF AMERICAN ORCHESTRAS The Los Angeles Philharmonic is one of just 21 orchestras across the United States to receive a grant from the League of American Orchestras’ American Orchestras’ Futures Fund. The two-year innovation grant, made possible by the generosity of the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation, will support the LA Phil’s Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA) in increasing its national as well as local impact. “These 21 orchestras from across the country were chosen for their ability to influence a positive future for the art form,” said Jesse Rosen, President and CEO, League of American Orchestras. “They are making significant and exciting investments in organizational learning and innovation. We are grateful to the Ann & Gordon Getty Foundation for their visionary support of this new program.” An independent review panel selected the orchestras based on criteria including the organization’s capacity to respond and adapt to opportunities and changed circumstances, and the potential for artistic, internal, community, public value, and field-wide impact. Launched in 2007, YOLA breaks down the economic barriers to receiving a high-quality music education by providing free music instruction in a safe and healthy afterschool environment. YOLA is inspired by El Sistema, the dynamic Venezuelan youth orchestra movement that nurtured LA Phil Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and serves children with the greatest needs, fewest resources, and little or no access to instrumental instruction. continued on pg. 34

With grant support, the LA Phil will expand YOLA’s local and national influence through three initiatives. Locally, the LA Phil will introduce YOLA’s fourth site through an in-school model developed in partnership with the Camino Nuevo Charter Academy. Secondly, the LA Phil will introduce a pre-professional track for advanced YOLA musicians, offering them private lessons, conservatory application support, and financial assistance for auditions and high-quality instruments. Nationally, the LA Phil will stage the National Take a Stand Festival in the summer of 2017, hosting a symposium for practitioners from El Sistema-inspired programs across the country and a weeklong youth orchestra camp for 100 students.
LA PHIL COMPOSER FELLOW ROBBY GOOD COMMISSIONED BY NATIONAL CHILDREN’S CHORUS Sixteen-year-old LA Phil Composer Fellow Robby Good has been commissioned by the National Children’s Chorus to create a new work for its Spring 2017 season. Good’s work, “Cry for Love,” was performed by members of the National Children’s Chorus on May 6 at Carnegie Hall in New York and on May 10 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. This is the second time the National Children’s Chorus has commissioned a member of the Composer Fellowship Program. The LA Phil’s Nancy and Barry Sanders Composer Fellowship Program gives young composers the opportunity to develop their craft through private and group composition lessons, seminars presented by LA Phil musicians, and mentor sessions with professionals in the field. Robby Good is a junior at Hart High School in Santa Clarita. Robby started his musical journey at age six with piano lessons. He started playing percussion at age nine and is currently being instructed by Matt Cook. At 12 years of age, Robby started taking composition, percussion, and ensemble classes at California Institute of the Arts through their Saturday CAP Program. He currently studies music composition with Professor Ian Krouse of UCLA. Although he likes to compose all kinds of music, Good hopes to pursue a career in video game and film scoring.

LA PHIL 2017/18 SEASON AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL Like the city we call home, the LA Phil is constantly evolving, moving, and adapting. Our 99th season features a vivid array of music from a diverse group of musicians; a stirring mix of adventurous projects that invigorate our minds and traditional favorites that warm our hearts. Subscriptions and CreateYour-Own season packages are available, and single tickets go on sale August 27. “Entering my ninth season as Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic gives me the perfect opportunity to reflect on my time here in Los Angeles and all that we’ve accomplished together,” said Gustavo Dudamel. “This season we are building on this history, featuring programs by composers I love, performing favorite classic works as well as exploring the vibrant cultural life of Mexico City, and inviting artists from around the world to bring their perspectives to our stage. We continue to show our commitment to young people across Los Angeles with programs like YOLA, which inspire not only me, but also our entire LA Phil family. We hope you will join us on a musical exploration here at Walt Disney Concert Hall and throughout our beautiful city.”
DUDAMEL HIGHLIGHTS Some of the most beloved and important composers in Dudamel’s musical life – Mozart, Bernstein, and Schumann – are core to this season’s programming. The Schumann Cycle will present the composer’s four symphonies with two of his greatest concertos, featuring pianist Mitsuko Uchida and cellist Sol Gabetta, and the rarely-performed oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri, staged by director Peter Sellars. Bernstein’s centenary allows for another seldom-performed work to be presented – Mass – staged by Elkhanah Pulitzer and including full symphony orchestra, street singers, adult and children’s choruses, and rock and marching bands. A Mozart gala launches the season, followed by two weekends of music from the composer’s
final year. The idea of the prodigy has become a powerful part of classical music’s narrative, for which Mozart is the model. The program for the gala looks at Mozart’s early works with performances from some of today’s sensational young artists. This season there will be several large, multidisciplinary productions presented as part of the expanded in/SIGHT presentations, concerts which incorporate sight, sound, and movement. Gustavo Dudamel will conduct Das Lied von der Erde, Mahler’s setting of ancient Chinese poems on life, love, and loss, staged by Artist-Collaborator Yuval Sharon in an innovative partnership with TEATROCINEMA, Chile’s imaginative theater company which creates interactive 2D and 3D video backgrounds. Dudamel will also present the world premiere of Ted Hearne’s new opera Place, produced in partnership with Beth Morrison Projects.
FESTIVALS AND COLLABORATIONS Additionally, Sharon will stage a new work by Annie Gosfield, War of the Worlds, that will be performed simultaneously inside Walt Disney Concert Hall and at various sites across Los Angeles. Conducted by Christopher Rountree, the story is based on the 1898 science fiction novel by H.G. Wells. Susanna Mälkki’s first season as Principal Guest Conductor includes an original in/ SIGHT production of the U.S. premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Cello Concerto with choreography by Tero Saarinen. Rounding out the season’s multidisciplinary offerings are BiRDMAN LiVE, part of CDMX: Music from Mexico City; The Oscar® Concert; the U.S. premiere of Andrew Norman’s opera for the whole family – A Trip to the Moon; and two screenings of the film West Side Story with live orchestral accompaniment. The season will include four programs of music by Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen. The beloved composer-conductor returns to his adopted home, where he
premiered many of his works, as he presents the world premiere of a new orchestral piece conducted by Dudamel and conducts the West Coast premiere of his Cello Concerto with Yo-Yo Ma. Programs also include his concertos for pianist Yefim Bronfman and violinist Leila Josefowicz. Salonen’s newlyrevised Wing on Wing will also be offered.
NEW MUSIC The LA Phil’s commitment to new music is also integrated across the season’s programming with 20 new commissions and 19 world premieres from composers such as Annie Gosfield, Gabriela Ortiz, Diana Syrse, Tania León, Katherine Young, Marcos Balter, Joseph Pereira, Andrew McIntosh, Nico Muhly, Ted Hearne, and Esa-Pekka Salonen, among others; U.S. premieres from Bernd Alois Zimmermann, Andrew Norman, Luca Francesconi, Francesco Filidei, and Francesca Verunelli; and West Coast premieres from Matthias Pintscher and Salonen. This season also sees the return of Noon to Midnight, a day-long exploration of new music taking place across the Walt Disney Concert Hall campus with multiple ensembles and culminating in a Green Umbrella performance of Annie Gosfield’s new War of the Worlds.
THE STARS ALIGN Throughout the entire season, an exceptional array of world-class superstars, including Dianne Reeves, Yuja Wang, Martha Argerich with Itzhak Perlman, Herbie Hancock, Zubin Mehta, and John Adams, will perform. The season will also bring the long-awaited Walt Disney Concert Hall debuts of the Chicago Symphony under Riccardo Muti and the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev. HOLLYWOOD BOWL MUSEUM
JAZZ AT THE BOWL: NEW EXHIBIT Summer Nights: Jazz at the Bowl, the new exhibit at the Hollywood Bowl Museum, traces the history of jazz performance at the Bowl from the earliest days of the swing era through today, as jazz – and all its tributaries – is globally embraced and recognized as an original American art form. On August 5, 1939, Benny Goodman, the King of Swing, brought his group to the Hollywood Bowl for a special Saturday night non-subscription concert. Four years later Frank Sinatra became the first pop singer to appear with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Identified in the program as “baritone soloist,” the singer apologized to the crowd for appearing with a symphony orchestra. Sinatra returned to the Bowl in 1945 and 1946 and opened the door to other jazz singers, who began appearing regularly: Nat “King” Cole, Billy Eckstine, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, and Sarah Vaughan among them. It is no wonder that in 2002 the LA Phil’s first William Powers & Carolyn Powers Creative Chair for Jazz was singer Dianne Reeves. Reeves was succeeded by bassist Christian McBride in 2006. Next to hold the post, beginning in 2010, was composer/pianist Herbie Hancock, reaffirming his long association with the venue, which started in 1964 when he played with the Miles Davis Quintet. The 1950s was an important decade in the early history of jazz at the Bowl. In August 1955, Leonard Bernstein collaborated with the LA Phil, curating one of the most ambitious projects of its time, the “Festival of the Americas.” This progressive week-long event brought together artists as diverse as Isaac Stern, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Mexican composer Carlos Chávez, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, Billie Holiday, André Previn (then known primarily as a jazz pianist), and Cal Tjader’s Afro-Cuban ensemble. Latin jazz and dance music has endured as an elemental component of the Bowl programming from its earliest days. Cal Tjader returned to the Bowl in 1959 for the inaugural concert of the Los Angeles Jazz Festival, which also featured influential Afro-Cuban jazz master Machito. Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, one of the fathers of bebop who also brought attention
to the link between Afro-Cuban jazz and American music, first appeared at the Bowl in 1967. Gillespie was important to the evolution of jazz in an even more significant way. Along with Charlie Parker and Bud Powell, he led the transition of the genre from a dance-oriented to a listening-based music, as artists started to explore more avant-garde harmonic progressions and instrumental virtuosity. In 1956, legendary jazz entrepreneur Norman Granz brought together Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, piano virtuoso Art Tatum (Fats Waller famously said when Tatum walked into a club in which he was playing, “I only play piano, but tonight God is in the house.”), and the Oscar Peterson Trio for a sold-out concert. This concert became the first live jazz recording made at the Bowl, still in print on Verve Records. Ella was intent on jazz being considered as serious programming. She wanted to be recognized as a concert artist, preferring a concert setting, with the music front and center.
The Playboy Jazz Festival, established in 1979, has become a renowned tradition known for its day-long, weekend-long party atmosphere, with kerchief-waving dancers through the aisles, celebratory mood, and days jam-packed with music. As a complement to the Playboy Festival, Ernest Fleischmann, then Executive Director of the LA Phil, established Jazz at the Bowl as a distinct concert series the following year. Allowing for longer sets, the series was inaugurated by Chick Corea, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Carmen McRae, and Mel Tormé, among others, and it continues today, as their inheritors build on the storied tradition of jazz at the Hollywood Bowl. COUNTY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF PARKS AND RECREATION
A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR JOHN WICKER
2017 Plays
June 29 – October 21 As You Like It Shakespeare in Love Romeo and Juliet Guys and Dolls A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Did you know that the Hollywood Bowl is one of the 181 parks that the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation maintains throughout the County? Through our collaborative partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, we help make sure this park is able to provide the unique experience that is treasured throughout Southern California and beyond. There are few venues as iconic and beloved as the Hollywood Bowl, and we are proud to play a role in its ability to showcase performances by artists and musicians who dazzle their audiences by their wonderful music and song. As a Department that attracts 23 million visitors to our parks and facilities each year, we don’t take our responsibility lightly. On a daily basis, our staff work seamlessly together to maintain our programs and services, which are enjoyed by thousands of County residents each day. We all understand the value of parks and recreation to our communities, and how they help us live a better and healthier life. We also know the importance of finding the right life balance, and believe strongly that parks help make that happen! From trails to nature centers and lakes, you can count on us to provide amenities
that benefit County residents. After all, studies have shown that clean and safe parks positively impact our lives, and we are proud to do our part. It’s a privilege for me and our parks team to play a central role in making Los Angeles County a great place to live, work, and play, and that’s why our commitment to you and the Hollywood Bowl is unshakeable. We look forward to continuing our work on behalf of all County residents. Now, on with the show!

FOOD + WINE
A SUMMER RECIPE Tamma and Shimon Rothstein
BY SUZANNE GOIN
GRILLED LEEKS AND ARTICHOKES WITH BURRATA AND SALBITXADA • MAKES 4-6 SERVINGS • 18 baby artichokes • approximately 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1/2 lemon (optional if prepping artichokes in advance) • 1 teaspoon thyme leaves • 12 small or 6 large leeks • 1 pound burrata cheese • 4 ounces young dandelion greens, cleaned • 1 recipe salbitxada (recipe follows) • kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Light the grill 30 to 40 minutes before you are ready to cook.
+ Cut off the top third of the artichokes, and remove the tough outer leaves until you reach the soft, pale-yellow-green leaves. Using a paring knife, trim the bottom of the stem, and cut any dark, bitter pieces away from where the stem meets the heart. Cut each artichoke in half, and remove the fuzzy choke if there is one. (If you do this step ahead of time, you can place the artichokes in a bowl of cold water with a squeeze of lemon juice to prevent browning for up to 4 hours.)
+ Heat a large sauté pan over high heat for 2 minutes. Pour 1⁄4 cup olive oil into the pan, and wait a minute. Add the artichokes cutside down, and season with the thyme, 1 teaspoon salt, and a pinch of pepper. Reduce the heat to medium, and sauté for about 8 to 10 minutes, tossing often, until the artichokes are golden brown. (If the pan seems dry, add another tablespoon or two of olive oil.)
+ While the artichokes are cooking, clean the leeks. Remove any bruised outer layers from the leeks. Trim the roots, leaving the root end intact so the leeks won’t fall apart. Cut
the leeks in half lengthwise, and submerge in a large bowl of cold water to clean them. Shake the leeks well to dislodge any dirt stuck inside. Let them sit a few minutes, to allow any grit inside the layers to fall to the bottom of the bowl. Repeat the process until the water is clean. Place the leeks cut-side down on a towel, and pat dry completely.
+ When the coals break down, turn red, and glow, brush the leeks with 3 to 4 tablespoons of olive oil, and season with 1 teaspoon of salt and a few grindings of black pepper. Toss gently, to ensure that the leeks are thoroughly coated with oil and salt.
+ Place the leeks cut-side down on the grill, and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, rotating them once or twice, until they are nicely colored on the cut side. Carefully turn the leeks over, and move them to a cooler part of the grill. (If the tops start to burn, rest them on a spatula or an edge of the grill.) Cook for a few more minutes, until the leeks are tender. If the leeks are particularly big, you can remove them to a baking sheet and finish cooking them in a 375°F oven.
+ Cut the burrata into twelve slices, and place two slices on each of six plates at the ten o’clock and three o’clock spots. Season the cheese with a few grinds of black pepper. Scatter several dandelion leaves around each plate, and nestle the leeks and artichokes in and around the burrata and greens. While lifting and twirling the leek greens, spoon about 1⁄4 cup of the salbitxada over, under, and around the leeks, artichokes, and cheese.

THE 2017–18 SEASON OF DISCOVERY
SALBITXADA
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE
• MAKES 1-1/2 CUPS • 1 pound ripe tomatoes, or 3 San Marzano canned tomatoes • 2 cloves garlic, chopped • 1 jalapeño, finely diced • 3 tablespoons Marcona almonds • 1 tablespoon red-wine vinegar • 1⁄2 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon chopped at-leaf parsley • kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
E N O AS
If you are using fresh tomatoes, make a shallow cross in the bottom of each tomato, and blanch them in boiling water for 30 seconds. Cool the tomatoes in a bowl of ice water for a few minutes, and then use your fingers to slip off their skins. Remove the cores, finely dice the tomatoes (if using canned, just drain freshly dice), and place them in a medium mixing bowl.
M BU AR EN ÍA OS DE AI R
+
+ Stir the pounded nut mixture into the tomatoes, and whisk in the vinegar, olive oil, parsley, and a few grinds of black pepper. Taste for balance and seasoning.
From Caroline Styne: I take my cue in pairing wine with this dish from salbitxada, the condiment’s Catalan roots, and the fairly extensive array of wines made in the area. This Spanish accompaniment has a degree of heat and bright-red chile flavor that would make the perfect match for a firm yet light-bodied red. Wines made from Garnacha and Cariñena, from the region of Montsant, have a fruitiness that can highlight the sweetness and smoke in the grilled leeks, and enough tannin and structure to handle the salbitxada’s spicy kick. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The sixth album by PHOENIX sounds like the perfect soundtrack to come from a nation that, despite everything going on elsewhere in the world, still seems to possess hope and joy in great abundance. The world seemed to breathe a sigh of relief after the French Presidential election in May. However, when the four school friends from Versailles (Christian Mazzalai, Laurent Brancowitz, Thomas Mars, and Deck d’Arcy), now in their early 40s, began writing and recording the songs that would make up Ti Amo (10 of them, as always) it didn’t look like they were in step with the national mood at all. They started work in 2014; shortly after, Charlie Hebdo happened. Then the Bataclan happened when they were in the studio, just a 20-minute walk from the terrorist attack on the concert hall. “There was this feeling the world as we knew it was collapsing before our eyes,” explains guitarist Laurent Brancowitz. But strangely, the gloom was not being reflected in the songs the band were writing. “To our great amazement, amid the geopolitical tension and general darkness, the music we were creating was sounding so joyful, romantic, and carefree.” They came together in a new, unfamiliar studio space, as they do for each new record. “Having our own studio would be a
danger for us – the end,” bassist Deck d’Arcy speculates. This time they occupied the top floor of La Gaîté Lyrique in the 3rd arrondissement of Paris, a former theater that was refurbished as a center for arts and digital creatives in the late 2000s. Mazzalai, Brancowitz, and d’Arcy began composing together, with Mars joining them from his home in Manhattan for ten days out of every month. There they kept a strict 9-to-5 discipline for months, unlike past sessions of night work. They recorded the whole process – hundreds of hours of music. The favored songs that eventually emerged featured sparkling synths dominating over guitars. The guitars that were present were often altered electronically. While the record still sounds positively French, Brancowitz explains that “It’s an album about our European, Latin roots, our fantasized version of Italy. A lost paradise made of eternal Roman summers (hyperlight, hyper-clarity, pistachio gelato), juke-boxes on the beach, Monica Vitti and Marcello Mastroianni, fearless desire and Antique marble.” Their collaborator Pierrick Devin joined them as they explored (Devin would record the album, co-producing it with the band and mixing part of it alongside Michael Brauer), and their longtime producer, Philippe Zdar,
was never far away, giving them special guidance during his studio visits. Spending their days in Paris, reading the news, dreaming of Italy, they could be in no doubt that they were far removed from the preoccupations of the rest of their country. But Mars wouldn’t call his band’s work escapism as such. “I think you can tell it’s a 2017 record but there is this detachment and distance,” he says. “To me that’s not denial or escapism. It’s conscious, it’s what music and art are supposed to be: a world of possibilities.” Brancowitz agrees that although they knew that the songs felt strange for the times, it was impossible to resist them. “At first there was this slight feeling of guilt, before we understood that abandoning ourselves to the healing power of music was exactly what we had to do.” Now, in slightly more positive times, everyone can enjoy Ti Amo’s bright, summery sounds for what they are. The album sits comfortably beside Phoenix’s finest work, such as their breakthrough fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. A gold-seller in multiple countries, with a platinum single in the shape of “1901,” it won a Grammy in 2009 for Best Alternative Music Album and put the band where they are today: adored festival headliners known for their showmanship and Mars’ frequent forays into the crowds.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Before you ancients out there turn your heads and scoff at the premise of a 20-something rock-and-roll goofball calling himself an old-anything, consider this: said perpetrator, who answers to the name MAC DeMARCO, has spent the better part of his time thus far writing, recording, and releasing an album of his own music pretty much every calendar flip, and pretty much on his own. The fresh meat you’re now feasting on, This Old Dog, makes for his fifth in just over half a decade – bringing the total to three LPs and two EPs. According to the DMV, MacBriare Samuel Lanyon DeMarco is 26. But in working-dog years, ol’ Mac here could easily qualify for social security. To stay gold, turns out all he needed was some new tricks. Though used to and pretty happy with that annual grind, it was a little space – in time, location, and method – that inspired DeMarco while making the record. Moving from his isolated Queens home to a house in Los Angeles helped give the somewhat transient Canada native a broader base, and a few more months on his calendar to create did their job as well. Arriving in California with a grip of demos he’d written in New York, he realized after a few months of setting up his new shop – complete with a few new toys – that the gap was giving him perspective (insert tooth joke here). “This one was spaced out,” DeMarco says. “I demoed a full album, and as I was moving to the West Coast I thought I’d get to finishing it quickly. But then I realized that moving to a new city and starting a new life takes time. And it was weird, because usually I just write, record, and put it out; no problem. But this time, I wrote them and they sat. When that happens, you really get to know the songs. It was a different vibe.” DeMarco wrote some demos for This Old Dog on an acoustic guitar, an unusual yet
eye-opening method for him. “The majority of this album is acoustic guitar, synthesizer, some drum machine, and one song is electric guitar. So this is a new endeavor for me.” And from the outset, from the pops and clicks of the CR-78 and acoustic strums on the album-opening “My Old Man,” the synthdrenched beauty of the second track, “This Old Dog,” and that ironic recurring word itself, it’s clear that DeMarco’s bag is filled with new tricks indeed. This Old Dog is rooted more in a synth-base than any of his previous releases, but he is careful not to let that tactic overshadow the other instruments and overall “unplugged” mood of the work. In fact, DeMarco recognizes that he might share more than just a geographical flight-path with a certain Canadian-cumCalifornian songwriter. “I think what I was trying to do is make Harvest with synthesizers,” he laughs. “But I don’t think I even came close to the mark – something else entirely came out. This is my acoustic album, but it’s not really an acoustic album at all. That’s just what it feels like, mostly. I’m Italian, so I guess this is an Italian rock record.” Speaking of roots, while it’s known that DeMarco’s family history is complicated at best, the songs here may be the closest glimpse into his personal life and relationships with his kin he’s ever allowed. But then again, they may not be. Only one thing is certain: the titular mutt, naturally, is DeMarco himself, and as he brings us into his world, he makes sure it’s from his own hard-earned vantage point and measured post.
Once or twice every generation, Long Island introduces the world to artists of such singular originality that they change the very
nature of their art: Lou Reed; Jim Brown; Robert Mapplethorpe; Andy Kaufman. With their debut album for 4AD, Do Hollywood, THE LEMON TWIGS have earned themselves a spot on that list. Fusing tightly constructed pop, sophisticated orchestration, and British invasion melodies into a ten-song masterpiece, the D’Addario brothers – Brian (19) and Michael (17) – are whipping fans and critics alike into an utter frenzy. NPR hailed them as “fabulously weird,” Brooklyn Vegan raved that “they need to be seen to be believed,” and The Line of Best Fit dubbed their music “near perfect… the best lo-fi rock & roll anthem you’ll hear this decade.” The Guardian, meanwhile, crowned the album “a triumph of detailed richness and sumptuous melody.” Born into a musical family, Brian and Michael grew up on The Beach Boys and The Beatles, whose albums and films played constantly in their house. As toddlers, they were already harmonizing on “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” and soon they were playing drums and mastering whatever instruments they could get their hands on. Ask about their childhood dreams and they’ll tell you that they never aspired to do anything but make music together. It shows. “Brian and Michael are two of the best musicians I’ve ever met,” says Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado, who discovered the duo via Twitter and produced the new album. “As teenagers, they work like studio vets. Brian can play anything you hand him – he played all the strings and horns on the record – and Michael is the most captivating drummer I’ve ever seen. There’s nothing they can’t do.” Rado proved to be the perfect foil for the wunderkinds, and the resulting album brings together everything from Brian Wilson and David Bowie to Queen and The Association. Their music can soar like a carnival calliope and then swiftly drop down to its knees in the hushed tones of a confessional booth. Their vocals move seamlessly from a cabaret croon to classic la-la-la harmonies. They mine inspiration seemingly from every era of rock, stitching it all together into a baroque-pop quilt of many colors.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
An open mind naturally attracts inspiration. ZIGGY MARLEY remains receptive to the countless muses and magnetic flurries of creativity surrounding him on his musical journey. In 2014, he fully embraced a distinct freedom while working on his fifth solo offering, Fly Rasta, which received the 2015 Grammy for Best Reggae Album. Maintaining that mindset, he went one step further on his 2016 self-titled, sixth fulllength album, out via Tuff Gong Worldwide. “This is a continuation of the Fly Rasta ideology and philosophy,” he explained. “I learned so much during that process. Now, I’m taking this mindset and fulfilling a larger dream. I learned how to be more free and not to hesitate when it comes to exploring musical ideas. There’s a big difference lyrically. With my new record, I wanted to address my feelings about what’s happening outside of myself and in the world, how I see what I see, and solutions I have in mind. It’s very confident and direct. My fingerprint is on it more deeply. The world needs this message.” In 2015, Ziggy began crafting ideas for what would become his latest body of work
in his bedroom and home studio. For the first time, he didn’t discard any ideas; rather he put everything down, admitting, “They’re all connected, and it opened up the scope.” Incorporating that spirit of exploration, he began to look outward at the landscape around him. As the globe cries in pain on a daily basis, he wrote about something everyone can relate to. Last year, Ziggy chose to introduce the world to his music in a different fashion altogether, premiering two new songs from the album in a recent episode of the CBS hit series Hawaii 5-0. Additionally, he exercised his on-screen acting chops for the first time in the same episode, as the character Bones, a recurring role written specifically for him. He also found the perfect cross-section between his company Ziggy Marley Organics and the music. The GMO-free product line now boasts the world’s first GMO-free flavored coconut oils and roasted hempseeds. Additionally, Marley released two branded vape pens, a dry leaf device, and a special oil/wax device in tandem with the new
album, in partnership with Colorado’s O.Pen Vape. Throughout the course of his three-decade career and 16 albums, Ziggy has built a music legacy worthy of his legendary family name. With seven Grammys and an Emmy to his credit, the humanitarian, singer, songwriter, and producer continually progresses at every turn. Ziggy’s musical history dates back to when he was ten years old, watching his father Bob Marley record in the studio. His eight-album catalog with the Melody Makers encompasses three Grammys, countless sold out shows, and anthems including “Look Who’s Dancing,” “Tomorrow People,” and “Conscious Party.” Since making his solo debut in 2003, he received the Grammy for Best Reggae Album in 2006, 2012, and 2015, in addition to Best Children’s Album in 2011, recognizing his first children’s album, Family Time. That same year, he released his graphic novel debut, MARIJUANAMAN. In 2012, he launched Ziggy Marley Organics. 2013 saw him achieve a Daytime Emmy for “I Love You Too” and release a children’s book of the same title.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
THOMAS WILKINS is Principal Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. He has held a titled position at the Hollywood Bowl since 2008, when he was named Principal Guest Conductor; in the spring of 2014 he became Principal Conductor. Additionally he holds the position of Music Director of the Omaha Symphony, a post he has held since 2005. He also holds the Germeshausen Family and Youth Concert Conductor chair with the Boston Symphony. This August, he will assume the Henry A. Upper chair of Orchestral Conducting established by the late Barbara and David Jacobs as a part of Indiana University’s “Matching the Promise Campaign.” Past positions have included resident conductor of the Detroit Symphony and Florida Orchestra (Tampa Bay), and associate conductor of the Richmond (VA) Symphony. He also has served on the music faculties of North Park University (Chicago), the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. Devoted to promoting a life-long enthusiasm for music, Thomas Wilkins brings energy and commitment to audiences of all ages. He is hailed as a master at communicating and connecting with audiences. Following his highly successful first season with the Boston Symphony, the Boston Globe named him among the “Best People and Ideas of 2011.” In 2014, Wilkins received the prestigious “Outstanding Artist” award at the Nebraska Governor’s Arts Awards, for his significant contribution to music in the state. During his conducting career, he has led orchestras throughout the United States, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he returned this season and will appear in the 2017/18 season as well; the Cleveland
Orchestra, where he returned this season; the New York Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Dallas Symphony, the Houston Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Baltimore Symphony, the Utah Symphony; Chicago’s Grant Park Symphony, where he returns this summer for the third straight season; and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., to name a few. A native of Norfolk, VA, Thomas Wilkins is a graduate of the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He resides with his wife Sheri-Lee in Omaha. They are the proud parents of twin daughters, Erica and Nicole.
When THE SPECIALS reformed in 2008 for a one-off surprise performance at the Bestival Festival, few would have banked on the band still playing to huge audiences around the world in 2016 and 2017, but they are. Following the terribly sad loss of drummer and founder member John Bradbury suddenly in December 2015 the band decided to carry on and continue to fill dance halls and inspire fans young and old. With the first tour in 2009 selling out immediately and more dates hurriedly added it was obvious there was a massive demand to see this iconic band who only released two albums in their short career but were one of the most influential groups in UK musical history. Hailing from the industrial city of Coventry, this multi-racial seven-piece combined the angry, disaffected voice of punk with the wind-your-waist sensibility of ska and reggae to re-define pop music and make Britain dance again. A mercurial two and a half years later and it was all over, leaving behind seven Top Ten singles (two of which went to No.1) and two Top Five genre-defining albums. Their first single, “Gangsters,” released on their own 2tone label in 1979, was their calling card, and “Ghost Town,” their swan song, encapsulated the political mood in Britain. In between was a larger-than-life reputation for killer
sweat-drenched live shows and an attitude that walked like it talked. Since they reformed 30 years later, The Specials have performed at over 200 shows worldwide including (deep breath): Coachella / Live on the Letterman Show (US), Summersonic / Fuji Rocks (Japan), Benecassim (Spain), Lalapalooza Festival (Chile), Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada), Bluesfest Byron Bay (Australia) as well as countless other worldwide events. In the UK they closed the Olympic Games festival in Hyde Park, played Glastonbury, and Isle of Wight Festival among others and had several sold out tours. Gary Powell of The Libertines, who took over drumming duties on the 2016 dates has said: “John (Brad) Bradbury was a unique performer and his style and ability was definitely one of the defining factors that helped to create The Specials sound, and it is with great humility that I will be doing these tours and carrying on his legacy.”
Born in the Rocksteady era, Keith Rowe and Texas Dixon made their mark with a slew of hits and classics that have lasted over 50 years. From their haunting rendition of “Hypnotic Eyes” to the iconic guitar intro and solo of Lynn Taitt on “Stop That Train,” you are treated to a unique style that still lives on after five decades. Since 1966 many of their songs have enjoyed great success and continue to be played and sung by a new generation of Rocksteady lovers. This duo has a style that still seems surprisingly engaging and refreshingly innocent. Performing as KEITH & TEX, the singing duo hit it big in Jamaica in 1966 with their

Rocksteady anthems, “Tonight” and “Stop That Train.” Rocksteady, a style of Jamaican music popular for a brief window from 1966 to 1970, was the stylistic bridge between ska and reggae, drawing heavily from American R&B and soul music. Rowe and Dixon parted ways in 1970. Keith moved with his family to the United States and served in the army for more than 20 years, and Tex went with his family to Canada. They reconnected in 1997 to record an album called, appropriately, Back Together Again, but it was only distributed in local record stores. Since 2013, they have been discovering new, young audiences, in the United States and around the world who are reverent of early Jamaican music. Today, they are more appreciative of the opportunity to reconnect with a new audience and to tell their story. Their performances are punctuated with stories of what it was like back in the mid to late sixties and the wonderful time it was for Jamaican music. They have been performing worldwide at some of the most influential music festivals from Asia to Europe, and the United States. In 2013 they released a new album, Just Passing Through, to critical acclaim and have released a new, completely “rocksteady” album in March 2017: Same Old Story. The journey continues!

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
ABOUT THE PROGRAM Notes by John Mangum For what ended up being their last collaboration, the legendary team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II turned to Maria von Trapp’s account of her family’s odyssey in late-1930s Austria, The Trapp Family Singers. In 1924, Maria had entered the convent of Nonnenburg Abbey in the Austrian town of Salzburg (famous as Mozart’s birthplace and for its annual music festival). Two years later, she was dispatched to the household of Baron Georg von Trapp to care for his invalid daughter. In 1927, the baron and the former postulant married. The Trapp family made their debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1936, but left Austria in 1938 after the Nazis occupied the country and annexed it. After traveling through Europe, the family emigrated to the United States, and Maria, Georg, and their ten children settled in Vermont in 1942. Georg died in 1947, and Maria published her family memoir two years later. Robert Wise’s 1965 film wasn’t the first version of the Trapp family’s story to hit the silver screen. In 1956, a German-language version of the story, Die Trapp Familie, was released in Europe and met modest success both there and in South America. Paramount took note, and decided to option the story with an English-language film starring Audrey Hepburn in mind. Paramount never made the planned picture; Hepburn kept herself busy with War and Peace, Funny Face, and Love in the Afternoon. The German film had, however, come to the attention of Broadway star Mary Martin, famous for creating the role of Nellie Forbush in another Rodgers and Hammerstein production, South Pacific (1949). Martin was enchanted by the film, and she and her husband tried to track down Maria von Trapp to discuss the possibility of turning her family’s story into a musical. Maria had been on a mission to, ironically enough, the south Pacific, and could not be found. After eight months of searching, Martin found her in Innsbruck, Austria, recovering from malaria. Though wary of allowing her life to be made into a Broadway play, Maria recognized how much money her participation could generate – money that she could use in her religious and charitable work.
A book was generated from Maria’s 1949 account and given to Martin. At this point, the idea was to use actual German songs sung by the Trapp family for the musical portions of the play. The producer also hoped that Rodgers and Hammerstein would contribute several songs as well. But the composer and lyricist thought that the work would be stronger if it were consistent. They would only participate if all of the songs were original. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music opened at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway on November 16, 1959 with Mary Martin as Maria. It ran for 1,443 performances, an overwhelming critical and popular success. For the movie version of the musical, the roles of the baroness (played by Eleanor Parker in the film) and Max (played by Richard Haydn) were reduced, and three songs – “No Way to Stop It,” “An Ordinary Couple,” and “How Can Love Survive” – were cut. Richard Rodgers composed two new songs for the filmed version of his musical. Maria and the baron’s “Something Good” replaced “An Ordinary Couple,” and Maria’s “I Have Confidence” was added to the film’s opening scene in Nonnenburg Abbey. The Sound of Music boasts some of the most famous numbers in musical history. Rodgers showed the breadth and versatility of his art with this score. The music ranges from the religious solemnity of the Psalm, Hymn, and Alleluia sung by the nuns’ chorus to the delights of numbers like “Do-Re-Mi” and “My Favorite Things.” The abbess’ “Climb Every Mountain” never fails to rouse, and there are few tunes more moving than the baron’s “Edelweiss.” The work is, of all of the Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborations, the closest to Viennese operetta with its succession of numbers covering a wide emotional and musical range, an appropriate similarity considering its setting, if not its subject. John Mangum, who served for several years on the staff of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, is President of the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.
Growing up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, MELISSA PETERMAN first made a name for herself when she was cast in the local production of Tony and Tina’s Wedding. She also starred in Working Class, Retired at 35, Surviving Suburbia, Rita Rocks, Just Shoot Me, Cedric, Living in Abandon, The Pitts, and American Dad. Her first televised comedy special, Melissa Peterman: Am I The Only One?, aired on CMT, and she hosted CMT’s The Singing Bee for four seasons. She also starred in Dusty Peacock, the online series created for Crackle.com. She has just started production on the sixth season of Freeform’s Baby Daddy, as Bonnie Wheeler. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
ABOUT THE PROGRAM In commemoration of David Bowie’s recent passing, Seu Jorge performs a special tribute to him while recreating the set to the film A Life Aquatic on stage alongside screens crafted as boat sails that will be displaying images from the film. Jorge, one of Brazil’s most talented contemporary singers, rose to international fame in the Wes Anderson film A Life Aquatic. In his acclaimed role as Pelé dos Santos, a singing sailor, he performed several of David Bowie’s songs in the film. But in a twist, he did it in Portuguese, accompanying himself simply on acoustic guitar. Seu Jorge’s adaptations in Portuguese of David Bowie’s music underscore the breadth and depth of his compositions and have gone on to have a significant cultural impact. “Had Seu Jorge not recorded my songs in Portuguese, I would never have heard this new level of beauty which he has imbued them with.” — David Bowie
SEU JORGE (born Jorge Mario da Silva, June 8, 1970) is a Brazilian musician, singer/ songwriter, and actor. He has released over ten albums across the last decade. Seu Jorge started out as part of the band Farofa Carioca, writing most of the songs for their 1998 debut album Moro no Brasil. In 2001, he released Samba Esporte Fino, an album that was predominantly of a pop influence. It was released outside Brazil under the name Carolina on November 25th 2003 under Mr Bongo Records. Seu Jorge has earned himself a lot of exposure through his work as an actor and soundtrack composer. He appeared in the critically acclaimed 2002 film City of God and then played Pelé dos Santos in Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, for which he provided a lot of the soundtrack in the form of Portuguese-language cover versions of David Bowie classics. In June 2006, he performed at Bonnaroo music festival in Tennessee and at the Festival Sudoeste TMN in Portugal. He also performed in 2006 at the Bluesfest in Ottawa and
performed at the Harborfront in Toronto. He never fails to get the crowd moving in his electrifying performances. He is one of those artists who pursues a number of ventures, such as in 2012, when he collaborated with American fashion designer Rachel Roy on a line of sportswear, footwear, jewelry, and handbags. The collaboration is part of Macy’s new campaign spotlighting Brazil and its culture. It is available exclusively at Macy’s and on Rachel Roy’s website. In August 2012, Seu Jorge performed in the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony in London during the Handover section of the ceremony. Jorge performed alongside B Negão and Marisa Monte and concluded with a surprise appearance by Pelé. In 2013, Seu Jorge appeared on rapper Talib Kewli’s album Prisoner of Conscious, on the song “Favela Love.”

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Our July Fourth Fireworks Spectacular explores the musical heritage of the United States to celebrate our country’s 241st birthday. Pentatonix, the multi-platinum-selling a cappella group, joins conductor Thomas Wilkins and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for a rousing set of their classic hits. Born in Pasadena, Jerry Goldsmith (19292004) grew up in Los Angeles, where his composition teachers included Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ernst Krenek, and Miklós Rózsa. After writing music for CBS radio and television programs, he began scoring films with the 1957 western Black Patch, eventually composing more than 175 film scores. Among them are classics such as Planet of the Apes (1968), Patton (1970), Chinatown (1975), The Omen (1976 – Academy Award), Alien (1979), Hoosiers (1986), Basic Instinct (1992), and L.A. Confidential (1997). He had a close relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, including conducting the orchestra in the first performances of his Fireworks: A Celebration of Los Angeles in two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in 1999. A long-time champion of an “American” musical sound and style, William Schuman (1910-1992) drew on works of William Billings to evoke an atmosphere of the Revolutionary period in his New England Triptych. “William Billings (1746-1800) is a major figure in the history of American music,” Schuman wrote. “The works of this dynamic composer capture the spirit of sinewy ruggedness, deep religiosity, and patriotic fervor that we associate with the Revolutionary period…. I am not alone among American composers who feel an identity with Billings and it is this sense of identity which accounts for my use of his music as a point of departure. These pieces do not constitute a ‘fantasy’ on themes of Billings, nor ‘variations’ on his themes, but rather a fusion of styles and musical language.” Composed as a church hymn, “Chester” was subsequently adopted as a marching song by the Continental Army. The scherzo-like quality of the music following the hymn in Schuman’s setting reflects this change. For much of the world, John Williams (b. 1932) is Star Wars... and vice versa. He
scored George Lucas’ original outer space adventure in 1977, and not only captured the spirit of the film – grounding the alien characters and environment in a nostalgic musical language – but almost singlehandedly revitalized the tradition of symphonic film scoring. He also planted a seed from which an entire universe of eternal themes has sprung. “Yoda’s Theme,” from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, captures all of the Jedi sage’s compassion, wisdom, and wit. Robert Lowden (1920-1998) served in the U.S. Army Band during World War II and went on to compose and arrange for Claude Thornhill’s big band and for 101 Strings. His Armed Forces Salute gathers the songs and marches of the branches of the United States military, with allusions to other patriotic music in the transitions. The earliest version of the Army’s song was the “Caisson Song,” written by three lieutenants stationed in the Philippines in 1908. In 1917 John Philip Sousa was asked to adapt it as a march for the Field Artillery, and in that form it became a huge popular hit. “Semper Paratus” (Always Ready), the official song of the U.S. Coast Guard, was composed by Coast Guard Captain Francis S. Van Boskerck while stationed in Alaska in 1927. The tune now used for the “Marines Hymn” is based on the Gendarmes’ Duet from Jacques Offenbach’s operetta Geneviève de Brabant, which premiered in Paris in 1859. “The United States Air Force” was written by Captain Robert MacArthur Crawford as the “Army Air Corps Song” in 1939, and won a competition organized by the Air Corps, with a $1,000 prize from Liberty magazine. (In 1947 the words “United States Air Force” replaced “Army Air Corps” in the title.) “Anchors Aweigh” is the fight song of the U.S. Naval Academy, and was composed in 1906 by Lieutenant Charles A. Zimmerman, then bandmaster at the Academy.
with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony, and served as music director of the Glendale Symphony for many years. His evocative arrangements — here of the powerful 1895 patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful” by Samuel Augustus Ward (1847-1903) — are still performed by orchestras and choirs around the world. John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) was known the world over as a bandleader and the composer of dozens of marches, as well as of operettas, orchestral suites, and songs. The three marches on tonight’s program are American classics. The Washington Post was completed by Sousa in 1889, a commission for the Washington Post newspaper award ceremonies for promising journalists and essayists. Sousa penned Semper Fidelis in 1888. The march takes its title from the motto of the U.S. Marine Corps: Semper Fidelis – Always Faithful. It was dedicated to those who inspired it – the officers and men of the United States Marine Corps. In Sousa’s own words: “I wrote Semper Fidelis one night while in tears, after my comrades of the Marine Corps had sung their famous hymn at Quantico.” It became one of his most popular marches, and Sousa himself considered it his best. The Stars and Stripes Forever! was written in 1896 while Sousa was aboard ship from England to the United States. Notes compiled from Los Angeles Philharmonic archives.
Californian Carmen Dragon (1914-1984) was a highly successful composer, arranger, and conductor. Trained at San Jose State College, he worked as a nightclub pianist, and then as an arranger in Hollywood. He eventually scored more than 30 films, as well as television and stage shows. He conducted at the Hollywood Bowl many times in the 1950s and ’60s, recorded prolifically

In a career that spans five decades, JOHN WILLIAMS has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage. He has served as music director and laureate conductor of one of the country’s treasured musical institutions, the Boston Pops Orchestra, and he maintains thriving artistic relationships with many of the world’s great orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Williams has received a variety of prestigious awards, including the National Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honor, the Olympic Order, and numerous Academy Awards, Grammys, Emmys, and Golden Globe Awards. Williams has composed the music and served as music director for more than 100 films. His 40-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Adventures of TinTin, and War Horse. Their latest collaboration, The BFG, will be released this summer. Williams composed the scores for all seven Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, Home Alone, Angela’s Ashes, Seven Years in Tibet, Sabrina, Presumed Innocent, The Reivers, and Goodbye, Mr. Chips among many others. He has worked with many legendary directors, including Alfred Hitchcock, William Wyler, and Robert Altman. In 1971, he adapted the score for the film version of Fiddler on the Roof, for which he composed original violin cadenzas for renowned virtuoso Isaac Stern. He has appeared on recordings as pianist and conductor with Itzhak Perlman, Joshua Bell, Jessye Norman, and others. Williams has received five Academy Awards and 50 Oscar nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person
and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars. His most recent nomination was for the film Star War: The Force Awakens. He also has received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), 22 Grammys, four Golden Globes, five Emmys, and numerous gold and platinum records. Born and raised in New York, Williams moved to Los Angeles with his family in 1948, where he studied composition with Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. After service in the Air Force, he returned to New York to attend the Juilliard School, where he studied piano with Rosina Lhevinne. He returned to Los Angeles and began his career in the film industry, working with a number of accomplished composers including Bernard Herrmann, Alfred Newman, and Franz Waxman. He went on to write music for more than 200 television films. His more recent contributions to television music include the well-known theme for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), the theme for NBC’s Meet the Press, and a new theme for the PBS arts showcase Great Performances. In addition to his activity in film and television, Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage. In January 1980, Williams was named 19th music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor that he assumed following his retirement in December 1993, after 14 highly successful seasons. One of America’s best known and most distinctive artistic voices, Williams has composed music for many important cultural and commemorative events. In the world of sport, he has contributed musical themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, and the 1987 International Summer Games of the Special Olympics. In 2006, Williams composed the theme for NBC’s presentation of NFL Football. John Williams holds honorary degrees from 21 American universities. He is a recipient of the 2009 National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the United States Government. In 2016, Williams received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute – the first composer in history to receive this honor. In 2003, he received the Olympic Order, the IOC’s highest honor, for his contributions to
the Olympic movement. He served as the Grand Marshal of the 2004 Rose Parade in Pasadena, and was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honor in December of 2004. Williams was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2009, and in January of that same year he composed and arranged Air and Simple Gifts especially for the first inaugural ceremony of President Barack Obama.
American composer/ conductor JUSTIN FREER was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. He has established himself as one of the West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and has quickly become a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, playing in wind ensembles, marching bands, and community orchestras. He quickly turned to piano and composition and composed his first work for wind ensemble at age eleven. Continuing trumpet performance while studying piano and composition, Freer saw multiple wind ensemble, choral, and big band performances of his music while still a teenager and gave his professional conducting debut at age 16. Composing for various mediums, he has written music for world-renowned trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Jens Lindemann, and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music at some of the most well-known concert halls, festivals, music clinics, and conventions in the world. Major League Soccer called upon Freer to compose and conduct music for the 2011 and 2012 Major League Soccer Championship Cups in Los Angeles, CA. He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Dragonball Evolution, and Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor Freer has appeared with some of the most well-known orchestras in the world, including the Chicago Symphony

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
“Here comes the 21st century,” Debbie Harry assuredly sang nearly three decades ago on her solo disc Def Dumb And Blonde, “it’s gonna be so much better for a girl like me.” With the turn of the century well behind us now, that gleeful prediction has certainly come true: Singer-songwriter Harry, guitarist and co-writer Chris Stein, powerhouse drummer Clem Burke, and their band-mates in BLONDIE are undeniable pop icons, their sound and sensibility as fresh as when they first topped the charts in the late 1970s. In their newest project, Po11inator, Blondie enlisted a group of cool songwriters to contribute to the record, weaving their own way into the living, breathing story of Blondie, a group that directly affected their own genetic makeup as artists. The list is enviable and reflects the dynamism of Blondie’s very own cross-pollinating past – the fans and friends contributing material are blonde-bewigged superstar Sia, Blood Orange frontman Dev Hynes, British singer Charli XCX, Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Nick Valensi (The Strokes), Johnny Marr (The Smiths),, and Canadian movie blogger and indie rocker (under the name An Unkindness) Adam Johnston. The invincible Joan Jett and cross-dressing
comedian and singer John Roberts, who rose from DIY YouTube sensation to Bob’s Burger regular, both contribute vocals. “We put the word out and asked people for songs and we got a lot of responses. I’m happy the way it all came together. It was a different approach for us, to draw in all of these things. I feel like we did what we did back then and we put out these sounds and ideas and now we’ve come full circle, pulling it back in, continuing this ongoing chain of events, this circular motion,” Harry shares. Blondie has always been a forward-thinking – and forward-moving – group; they’ve outlived the groundbreaking moment that birthed them and have adapted to time, space,, and industry evolution as much as the face of New York itself. Yet similarly to New York, they’ve always remained indisputably Blondie. Never satisfied to rest on their laurels, their incessant need to fly the flag for cross-genre rock never relinquishes because Blondie’s punk never died. It’s a sound that has always echoed the underground above in the mainstream. Debbie Harry is still possessed of an aura and attitude that’s too big for subterranean clubs, and her cohort Chris Stein’s vision has been so ahead of its time
that the rest of the world is still catching up to it. Walk into any dance club tonight and hear a “Call Me” or a “Heart Of Glass.” Talk to any hip-hop historian and recall that Debbie was an original Beastie Boy who took rap music to the masses when it was still a block party concern. Read any tome on the history of punk and they’re interwoven into the fabric of the one genre that still inspires most every band to pick a name and find a practice space. Their active presence in our lives 40 million albums sales and countless accolades later (including a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2006 and NME Godlike Genius Award in 2014) is something to be treasured. Front-woman Harry and guitarist/conceptual mastermind Stein have been with Blondie since the beginning, as has drummer Burke, whose powerhouse playing has always distinguished Blondie’s sound. Joining them on tour and in the studio are Leigh Foxx (bass) and Tommy Kessler (guitar) as well as keyboardist-songwriter Matt Katz-Bohen. Blondie’s impact has been greater than the sum of its record sales: Harry’s persona, and the band’s boundary-pushing pop, has shaped the look and sound of many chart-topping female artists who followed in

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
the last three decades, from Madonna to Lady Gaga to Katy Perry and, of course, Sia. Po11inator delves even deeper into this idea: inspiration from Blondie’s action-packed past shaping the sound of our collective future. Debbie describes working with so many collaborators as “full circle.” “Their material is part of us. It’s a celebration of recycling, ha!”
In the spring of 2013, the members of GARBAGE – Shirley Manson, Steve Marker, Duke Erikson, and Butch Vig – gathered in Los Angeles to start work on their sixth studio album. Except the recording didn’t begin in a studio, per se. It began where so many bands first do: in a basement. The basement was Vig’s, perhaps one of the least elaborate home studios a multi-platinum producer has ever had. “My home studio is just a room where I watch Packers games,” says Vig. “There’s no sound proofing. It’s just four walls of drywall. So it’s got a bit of a trashy vibe to it.” It was a fitting launching pad for an album that, over the course of the next two and a half years, would see the band finding a way forward by looking backward, tapping into the spark of their youths to try an uninhibited back-to-basics approach. But Garbage – long known for their meticulously crafted blend of dark, industrial noise, sci-fi pop melodies, whirlwind guitar, and tricked-out rhythms – was going back-to-basics for the first time. “When you’re a teenager, you’re in a basement somewhere with your band, and you don’t know what you’re doing,” says Marker. “There’s a lot of the teenagers that we were in this record.” Some will hear echoes of Garbage’s 1995 debut album in Strange Little Birds – including Manson herself. “To me, this record, funnily enough, has the most to do with the first record than any of the previous records,” she says. “It’s getting back to that beginner’s headspace.” In part, she says, that’s a result of not having anyone to answer to. Strange Little Birds is Garbage’s second album off their own label, STUNVOLUME. It’s a return to the freedom they had when working on their very first songs at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin, more than 20 years ago, before they’d ever signed a label deal. “It’s so liberating,” says Manson. Manson calls Strange Little Birds Garbage’s most romantic album. “And what I mean by
romance, really, is vulnerability. I used to feel so scared, and I think that was why I was so aggressive – but I’m much more willing to admit weaknesses than I was before.” For her, the retrospective feel of Strange Little Birds is more personal than musical. Each song, she says, addresses “different points in my life between me and a person I’ve loved. They’re hot spots in my life, when I was afraid, or vulnerable, or didn’t behave at my best.” Lyrically and musically, says Manson, the album is “less fussed over” than any Garbage has made. “We fell in love with immediacy,” says Vig. “The vocals aren’t slick. They have a raw, emotional feel.” “We felt less limited in what we could try,” says Erikson. “On ‘Blackout’ we were just winging it. We just started playing, following one another.” “That song started with a jam in my home studio,” says Vig. “It’s got a great ’80s bass riff. It sounds like Garbage, but we’ve done a new spin on it – some crazy riffs and bits in the bridge.” From the confessional opener, “Sometimes,” to the pulsing static of the closer, “Amends,” Strange Little Birds is a sweeping, cinematic record of a unified mood: darkness. “There aren’t really any upbeat pop songs,” say Vig. “Even ‘Empty,’ which has a big, anthemic guitar sound, has pretty dark lyrics.” “I love dark and dismal,” says Manson, who once made a hit single out of her
admission that she was only happy when it rains. “I’m aching for some dark and dismal. Because I feel like the musical landscape of late has been incredibly happy and shiny and poppy. Everybody’s fronting all the time, dancing as fast as they can, smiling as hard as they can, working on their brand. Nobody ever says, ‘Actually, I’m lost and I don’t have a ****ing clue what I’m doing with the rest of my life and I’m frightened.’ ” In the end, though, there’s power in the darkness, as the rhythmic throb and guitar crash of “So We Can Stay Alive” shows. “That song is grappling with mortality,” says Manson. “The more that I see the clock ticking, the more it gives me fuel. It’s a song to all the things that keep you moving forward with passion, all the things that can be used as fuel. All these things you think aren’t good can be used as powerful material to enhance your life.”
