MASTERING THE ART OF THE BEDROOM

95 YEARS OF SWEDISH EXCELLENCE

Since 1926, four generations of the Ljung family have aspired to produce the most comfortable and technologically advanced beds on the market.

As a privately-owned family business, our only responsibilities are to our customers, to the integrity of our product, and to our commitment to sustainable thought and practices.

Over the last 95 years our beds have been thoroughly vetted and tested – by the scientific community, but more importantly, by four generations of customers worldwide.

The results are clear. We have a technology that works and the history to prove it.

My wealth. My priorities. My partner.

You’ve spent your life accumulating wealth. And, no doubt, that wealth now takes many forms, sits in many places, and is managed by many advisors. Unfortunately, that kind of fragmentation creates gaps that can hold your wealth back from its full potential. The Private Bank can help.

The Private Bank uses a proprietary approach called the LIFE Wealth Cycle SM to find those gaps—and help you achieve what is important to you.

Candlelight guests just want to have fun

GUESTS AT THE 48th Annual Candlelight Concert had cocktails in Central Park and dinner under the Brooklyn Bridge. It was “A Night in New York,” a nod to Cyndi Lauper, the evening’s headliner, who hails from Brooklyn. Lauper, an ’80s pop icon, is a Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner and wrote the book for the hit Broadway musical Kinky Boots, which appeared at Segerstrom Center in 2014 and 2018.

The annual fundraiser, held December 2, was chaired by John E. Stratman, Jr., a Center board member and the senior director of public affairs and brand communications for Kaiser Permanente, the Center’s Official Healthcare Partner. Lugano Diamonds was the presenting jewelry sponsor and donated a gift of a bottle of fine wine to attendees.

Candlelight Concert, the premiere Orange County social event, brings glamour center stage, and puts philanthropy in the spotlight. Candlelight raises vital funds to support the Center’s nonprofit education, community engagement, and artistic programs, impacting the lives of a million people annually.

“When we think of a spectacular special event, this is it,” said Stratman. “The great support for the Center that was demonstrated shows what an important role we play in this community.”

Guests made their way to Orchestra Terrace lobby to enjoy a Champagne bar, cocktails, and

delicious seafood station.

When the house opened, guests followed the lively Brass Pacifica band down to the Segerstrom Hall stage, which was set with elegantly decorated dining tables. The décor was an immersive experience, with the Brooklyn Bridge crossing the back of the stage, sculptural red drapes and Edison light chandeliers.

The meal was prepared by Giada Catering by Giada de Laurentiis, the Emmy Award-winning television personality of Food Network and author of numerous cookbooks. Guests dined on antipasti, Giada’s Signature lemon spaghetti, petit filet and scallops, and finishing with an array of Italian desserts.

Then the stage morphed into Studio 54, with a lighted dance floor and disco balls glittering above as Lauper sang her greatest hits. Guests swarmed the dance floor as she inspired everyone to recreate their finest ’80s and ’90s moves. After Lauper’s performance, world famous DJ Richard Blade kept the energy high as everyone remained on the dance floor.

The evening ended with pizza in “Little Italy.” Coffee was served in the iconic NYC blue and white cups, accompanied by a selection of Giada’s cookies.

Segerstrom Center for the Arts applauds all the generous supporters and guests of the 2022 Candlelight Concert—an extraordinary event and annual tradition not soon to be forgotten.

Navigating the urban jungle

DIRECT FROM BROADWAY, Mean Girls is the ferociously funny hit musical coming to the Center March 7–19.

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious animals of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. Mean Girls gets to the hilarious heart of what it means to be a true friend, a worthy nemesis, and, above all, a human being.

New York magazine cheers, “Mean Girls delivers with immense energy, a wicked sense of humor and joyful inside-jokery.” USA Today says, “We’ll let you in on a little secret, because we’re such good friends: Get your tickets now!”

spread the snark. Just think if Regina’s Burn Book had been on Instagram, or if she had been Tweeting gossip to her followers.

The film Mean Girls, on which this musical is based, came out in 2004. Twitter began in 2006. Instagram launched in 2010. No matter how teen girls communicate, they find a way to use it to assert their superiority. Today’s social media certainly makes it easy for them to insult each other while the world can follow a spat that goes viral.

But, as we see in Mean Girls, it doesn’t have to be that way. (Spoiler alert!) After enduring months of backstabbing frenemies and Burn Book gossip, Cady realizes she needs to reboot her life and make amends. She helps the Mathletes win the state championship and is crowned homecoming queen. As she stands on stage to accept the honor, she declares that everyone has something special about them and breaks up her (plastic) tiara. Wouldn’t a video of that be perfect on TikTok?

Mean girls are nothing new. There were probably mean girls in Elizabethan England criticizing another girl’s gown for being the wrong color. (“On Wednesdays we wear pink velvet!”) Back in the 20th century they passed notes in class. Today they have new ways to

We all can help make mean girls (and boys) a thing of the past. Let’s not turn away anyone from our lunch table. That would be so fetch.

DISNEY

THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS (DTP), a division of The Walt Disney Studios, was formed in 1994 and operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. Worldwide, its ten Broadway titles have been seen by more than 200 million theatregoers and have been nominated for 62 Tony® Awards, winning Broadway’s highest honor 20 times.

The company’s inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, opened in 1994. It played a remarkable 13-year run on Broadway and has been produced worldwide. A brand new production of Beauty and the Beast, reimagined by members of the original Broadway creative team—led by Matt West—is currently on tour throughout the UK and Ireland. In November 1997, Disney made theatrical history with the opening of The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Director, Julie Taymor, who became the first woman in Broadway history to the win the award. Surpassing 25 landmark years on Broadway, it has welcomed 110 million visitors worldwide to date and has nine productions currently running worldwide. The Lion King has played over 100 cities in 24 countries on every continent except Antarctica; its worldwide gross exceeds that of any film, Broadway show or entertainment title in box office history. Elton John and Tim Rice’s Aida opened on Broadway next, winning four 2000 Tony Awards. It was followed by Mary Poppins, a co-production with Cameron Mackintosh, which opened in London in 2004 and went on to enjoy a six-year Tony-winning Broadway run. The show continues its Olivier Awardwinning London return at its original home, the Prince Edward Theatre. Tarzan®, which opened on Broadway in 2006, went on to become an international hit with an awardwinning production enjoying a ten-year run in Germany. In January 2008, The Little Mermaid opened on Broadway and was the best-selling new musical of that year. DTP opened two critically acclaimed productions on Broadway in 2012, receiving seven Tony Awards between them: Peter and the Starcatcher and Newsies, each of which enjoyed a two-year run and launched North American tours, with Newsies playing a record-breaking Fathom Events in-cinema release. Aladdin, Disney Theatrical’s 2014 hit, continues its smash Broadway run. It has launched eleven productions around the globe and been seen by more than 14 million guests. Its newest hit, the 2018 Tony-

Other successful stage ventures have included the Olivier-nominated London hit Shakespeare in Love, stage productions of Disney’s High School Musical, Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame in Berlin, and King David in concert. DTP has collaborated with the nation’s preeminent theatres to develop new stage musicals including The Jungle Book, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Freaky Friday and Hercules. As a part of the recent acquisition of 21st Century Fox, DTP also heads the Buena Vista Theatrical banner, which licenses Fox titles for stage adaptations including Anastasia, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Mrs. Doubtfire and The Devil Wears Prada With 24 productions currently produced or licensed, a Disney musical is being performed professionally somewhere on the planet virtually every hour of the day.

More Broadway coming this season!

Mean Girls

Direct from Broadway, Mean Girls is the hilarious hit musical from an award-winning creative team, including book writer Tina Fey (30 Rock), composer Jeff Richmond (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde) and director Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon). Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina’s reign, she learns the hard way that you can’t cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. New York Magazine cheers, “Mean Girls delivers with immense energy, a wicked sense of humor and joyful inside-jokery.” USA Today says, “We’ll let you in on a little secret, because we’re such good friends: GET YOUR TICKETS NOW!”

American Ballet Theatre Like Water for Chocolate

Nothing could be sweeter than the U.S. premiere of American Ballet Theatre’s Like Water for Chocolate at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. This full-length ballet, created by the brilliant choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, brings the famous novel by Laura Esquivel to mouthwatering life.

Reuniting the award-winning team of Wheeldon (fresh from his Tony Award victory for MJ: The Musical) with composer Joby Talbot and Tony-winning costume designer Bob Crowley, Like Water for Chocolate tells the story of Tita, a young Mexican woman whose restrictive upbringing prevents her from marrying until her mother dies. Overwhelmed by a sense of duty and family tradition, Tita’s only form of expression is through cooking, but her life takes an unexpected turn when she falls in love with her wealthy neighbor Pedro. Their forbidden passion has farreaching—and devastating—consequences.

With the superstar dancers of ABT translating the richly layered story, Center audiences will be the first in the country to experience this magical Mexican love story!

Details, details

METICULOUSLY RESEARCHED and vividly written non-fiction narratives are Eric Larson’s calling card. Larson is the superstar author of six best sellers, including The Devil and the White City and In the Garden of the Beasts, and is hailed as “one of America’s greatest storytellers” by NPR. He will be the guest for our new In Conversation series on March 6.

His latest is The Splendid and the Vile: A

Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance

During the Blitz, recounting Winston Churchill’s first year as British prime minister in 1940 during the start of World War II and the German bombing blitz on London. The story includes ordinary people who endured the bombing while going about their daily lives, Churchill’s 17-year-old daughter visiting nightclubs during the blackout, and how the German leadership viewed its aerial campaign that was meant to bring Britain to its knees.

“It’s just a damn good story,” says Rolling Stone. “There are narrative arcs, heroes, villains, and suspense aplenty to craft the kind of rich, immersive histories that have become Larson’s trademark.”

Larson’s thorough and wide-ranging research was honed during an earlier career as a journalist. That means he doesn’t just focus on the main story but pulls the reader into the details of ordinary people within the story. “I don’t think of myself as a historian. I think of myself as a writer who writes history,” he told Rolling Stone. “My mission is to create as rich a historical experience as I can for the reader, so when they’re done with the book, they come out of it feeling like maybe they’ve lived briefly in a past time.”

“In a style that is suspenseful as well as entertaining, Larson shows us how both our highest aspirations and our most loathsome urges figured in the creation of the modern world,” says People magazine.

The Devil and the White City, his breakout hit in 2003, intertwines the story of the creation of the Chicago 1893 World’s Fair with that of one of America’s worst serial killers. Dead Wake is about the sinking of the Lusitania with hundreds of civilians on board by the Germans in 1915. In the Garden of the Beasts follows the first American Ambassador to Nazi Germany and his family as he tries to warn the American government about the impending danger of Hitler’s growing power and influence.

It looks like Larson goes looking for murder and mayhem, but “I don’t necessarily hunt for dark subjects,” he told creativenonfiction.org. “It just happens that the darker events of history are often the most compelling.”

Larson will regale you with the captivating events behind his subjects, how he creates such immersive histories, and what strange and inspiring details show up in the random archive boxes he searches through for a good story.

1920s meets 2020s at the Center

THE PLAYERS IN CAMERATA RCO are members of the Dutch Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (RCO), one of the world’s greatest orchestras. It says a lot about their love of chamber music that they make time in their busy orchestra schedules to be part of this ensemble. They describe it for themselves:

“We are completely free to choose the repertoire we play, where we play it and with whom. We like to be in close contact with our audience. The energy that results from these concerts is what inspires us most.”

That energy translates into great reviews. “The Camerata players… gave a warm, glowing performance of this mellow, often intricate music,” says The New York Times

“They play as one, phrasing, shading dynamics, and even breathing in a unanimous organism,” says Midlandmusicreview.co.uk, which goes on to praise the “suave, elegant finger work from the strings, beautifully balanced in a comforting sound.”

Four of the pieces on the Center’s program are by French composer Francis Poulenc. In the late 1950s Poulenc, who died in 1963, said he doubted anyone would be interested in his music in 50 years. He has been proved wrong. Today, music writer Jessica Duchen describes Poulenc as “a fizzing, bubbling mass of Gallic energy who can move you to both laughter and tears within seconds. His language speaks clearly, directly and humanely to every generation.”

Many of Poulenc’s major compositions were written in the 1920s, the post-World War I period when Europeans wanted to forget the war losses and enjoy themselves. He was part of a group of well-known composers in Paris who called themselves The Six and were integral in formulating a new sound for French music of the period. In 1921 a reviewer wrote in the Manchester Guardian, “I keep my eye on Francis Poulenc, a young man who has only just arrived at his twenties. He ought to develop into a

farceur of the first order.”

Poulenc had a dual nature: The fun, enfant terrible side and a serious side, which emerged in the 1930s, of beautiful religious music and opera, most notably Les dialogues des Carmélites. Our program highlights the effervescent side of the composer.

The concert opens with Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů’s La Revue de Cuisine. Igor Stravinsky was a great influence on both Poulenc and Martinů for his more unusual sounds that greatly reflected the fast-moving times and that’s evident in this work.

La Revue de Cuisine was written for a ballet; Martinů used his ballet compositions to experiment with tempos, dissonance, and playful orchestrations. The story centers on newlyweds Kitchen Pot and Lid who might end their relationship over jealousy, as Dish Towel, Stirring Stick and Broom get involved. It was written in 1927 as the Jazz Age was in full swing and this can clearly be heard, in spite of the unusual subject! This work was part of a trend for creating pieces that could be played by ensembles smaller than a full orchestra but more robust than a quartet. This meant they could be performed almost anywhere.

Both composers had a gift for bright, witty and surprising music, and this program expresses their spirit and the times they lived in. Hearing it played by some of the finest musicians in the world will make a special evening for the audience.

Hitting new heights: Mandy Gonzales and Javier Muñoz

IF LIN MANUEL MIRANDA casts you in lead roles in two of his blockbuster Broadway hits, you must be good. Mandy Gonzales and Javier Muñoz both fit the bill. These multi-talented performers will appear together in the Center’s new Headliners Series next month for one night only.

Gonzales has starred as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, Miranda’s mega-hit musical. Before that, she originated the role of Nina Rosario in another Miranda hit, In the Heights, and received rave reviews in the Tony-winning show. She was also Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway, and recently released her first album. Reviewing Gonzales during an engagement at the renowned Café Carlyle, theatermania.com raves, “This is one of those… cabaret performances in which you just sit back and say, ‘Wow.’”

Muñoz started his acting career in high school. He had an agent before he graduated, which led to his enrolling in NYU’s Tisch School for the Arts. He taught theater in NYC, worked with a

non-profit organization that promoted literacy in NYC schools and did regional acting gigs before he auditioned for In the Heights Miranda chose him as his own understudy for the title role, and when Miranda left the production, Muñoz was handed the lead. He repeated this success in Hamilton, alternating performances with Miranda as Alexander Hamilton and eventually assuming the role full time.

Both artists are excited to share showstopping songs, new music and more with Center audiences!

Center says farewell to Tom Lane

TOM LANE, who was hired as a stagehand for the Center in 1986, is retiring. He has also just celebrated 50 years as a member of The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees union.

In addition to his work with the Center, between 1990 and 2006 he was the head carpenter for Opera Pacific and Pacific Amphitheater, before returning to the Center in 2006 as technical director of the new Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. He assisted with the groundbreaking ceremony and the grand opening festivities for the concert hall.

Tom knows everything there is to know about the concert hall, down to the smallest

detail. Under his watch, many of the world’s greatest entertainers, musicians and orchestras performed to the highest level, not just for Center presentations, but those of our Resident Companies who also offer performances in the concert hall. Tom has always ensured that everything was perfect, on stage and off.

We all wish him an enjoyable and relaxing retirement (rumor has it he will be spending lots of time with his grandchildren) and sincerely thank him for his dedication to helping the Center be a world-class performing arts center.

THE STORY THAT DEFINED A GENERATION. AN UNMISSABLE WORLD PREMIERE.

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1967, the hardened hearts and aching souls of Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade and their chosen family of ‘outsiders’ are in a fight for survival and a quest for purpose in a world that may never accept them. A story of the bonds that brothers share and the hopes we all hold on to, this gripping new musical reinvigorates the timeless tale of ‘haves and have nots’, of protecting what’s yours and fighting for what could be.
