“beyond the burrito” (see p. 10) and explore restaurants whose Mexican-rooted menus offer delicious surprises. At Camino Riviera in Little Italy, for example, you can sample a Caesar-salad “Twinkie” and a tempura-seabass taco (pictured above) topped with edible gold leaf. At Valle in Oceanside, consider the California sea urchin with roastedbone-marrow crème brûlée and cotija cheese. For a winter drink (see p. 8), grab a moving seat at Wolfie’s Carousel Bar and order the Sazerac French cocktail. Or try a Negroni at Italian bodega J & Tony’s in East Village; it’s the only San Diego bar to make Esquire magazine’s list for “The Best Bars in America for 2021.” For dessert, Metl Bar Creamery & Cafe in North Park offers “boozy” small-batch ice cream. San Diego is brimming with choices for every palate. Let’s have some fun again and get you fed. —SARAH DAOUST

eeping up with San Diego’s dining scene—new restaurants, bars, menus, chefs—is one of my favorite challenges. The fun task lies in capturing the connections, the bigger story, the trends, that reveal our collective culinary heart. A year ago, working on our annual Food & Drink issue wasn’t as much fun—an uneasy time marked by lockdowns, “pivots” and closures. This year, the energy has shifted, with a palpable determination and resilience among restaurateurs— yielding cautious optimism, new openings, bold menus and more. While the future is forever uncertain, the time to explore and enjoy these relatively calmer waters is now. Welcome back to dining out in San Diego—now home to four Michelinstarred restaurants: Jeune et Jolie, Soichi, Sushi Tadokoro and Addison (which just earned its second star). This winter, we invite you to venture

DINING

Japanese Gem

What started as a pop-up has grown into its own brick-and-mortar restaurant. Meet Matsu—a low-lit, urban den, where the dining is so fine that it has sparked speculation of a future Michelin star. Chef William Eick is an architect of modern Japanese cuisine, but you won’t find sushi here. Instead, diners are offered a four-course menu, and can choose from four dishes per course. Each plate is lovely—incorporating Japanese and locally sourced seasonal ingredients—such as tempura unagi, A5 wagyu, squab (pictured) and buttery-sweet sablefish. Or double the indulgence with the eight-course omakase chef’s menu. 626 S. Tremont St., Oceanside, 760.231.6331

A longtime Del Mar dining destination feels new again. L’Auberge Del Mar has undergone a $10.5 million renovation that includes a remodeled lobby, a new pool and pool bar, upgraded guest rooms, and a new dining experience: Adelaide. Overlooking the pool and ocean, the indoor/outdoor restaurant is the embodiment of casual-chic coastal dining. Executive chef Nick Green oversees a locally sourced menu of seafood and California cuisine. Start with the Pacifico-bass ceviche; grilled-white-shrimp tostada; achiote-roasted carrots with tahini; or sweet-corn risotto with pickled baby carrots and Parmesan. Mains include scallops, organic chicken and 45-day-aged ribeye; with wildflower-honey semifreddo for dessert. Come for dinner at sunset and return for weekend brunch featuring live music. 1540 Camino del Mar, Del Mar, 858.793.6467

GONE FISHIN’ Calling all seafood lovers: Pacific Catch, the Bay Area’s famed fish house, makes its SoCal debut in San Diego at Westfield UTC. Known for its “waveto-table” Pacific Rim dishes incorporating sustainable seafood, the restaurant offers ceviche, tacos, ahi poke, daily fresh catches, lobster rolls, sushi and shellfish platters; plus bowls, salads, vegetarian

plates, margaritas and tiki-style cocktails. (Try the Painkiller or classic mai tai.) Menu standouts include the seared ahi burger with sushi-grade yellowfin tuna, avocado and wasabi aioli; and the fish ‘n’ chips with crispy Alaskan cod. Carnivores will love the wagyu cheeseburger with white cheddar; and the Korean BBQ plate with your choice of steak

or glazed ribs, a sunnyside egg and kimchi-fried rice. The California-coastinspired decor by Hatch Design Group is pretty, too —outfitted with ocean-blue booths, rattan light fixtures, nature-inspired murals and an open kitchen; plus two patios, a cocktail bar, communal tables and firepits. 4575 La Jolla Village Drive, Suite 1160, La Jolla (UTC), 619.728.2700

LIBATIONS

Care for a Drink?

From creative cocktails to distinctive decor, these bars aren’t your average watering hole.

AT THE NORTH END of Little Italy, a car garage has been transformed into a nostalgic Parisian wonderland. Dreamt up by nightlife wizard Mauricio Couturier (Bang Bang, El Camino), Wolfie’s Carousel Bar abounds in jaw-dropping, whimsical decor. The bar itself is an actual 8  SOCALPULSE.COM WINTER 2022

carnival-size carousel with seating that slowly revolves around it— making a full rotation about every 14 minutes. Booths are topped with slowly bobbing carousel horses and surrounded by massive birdcages. An oil painting of equestrians in the French countryside spans an entire wall. The menu boasts bistro fare such as Oysters Rockefeller, French onion soup and steak frites. But the real stars are the French cocktails. Try the classic Sazerac or French 75 with gin and brut Champagne; or go for the Hemingway Daiquiri, Fleur de France or signature Wolfie’s Vieux Carré made with Whistle Pig whiskey. Oui, oui, indeed. 2401 Kettner Blvd., Suite B, Little Italy, 619.255.7533 When in North Park, we’ll scream for some ice cream, especially if it’s

loaded with booze! Serving Southern-style comfort food and spiked frozen treats, Metl Bar Creamery & Cafe offers myriad splurge-worthy indulgences. Sample libations in the form of ice-cream flights, shakes, sundaes and push pops—with rotating boozy flavors such as tequila-pistachio, mezcal-peanutbutter-cup and white-RussianOreo; plus bloody marys and direct cocktails. Eats include countryfried steak ‘n’ eggs, shrimp ‘n’ grits, hearty burgers, a full breakfast menu, and mimosas and sangria that can be ordered as flights. 2835 University Ave., North Park, 619.915.5572 Known for its gourmet deli delights, craft libations and natural wines, a low-profile gem in East Village packs a punch with its hearty

name and big-city style. Congrats to J & Tony’s Discount Cured Meats and Negroni Warehouse for being honored as one of Esquire magazine’s “Best Bars in America for 2021.” It’s the only San Diego bar

to make the list—a standout for its urban-oasis-meets-Italian-bodegameets-Jurassic-Park tropical decor; and its “cold cuts and cocktails” aperitivo-bar vibe. This means an impressive selection of cured meats, Italian sandwiches, small plates and breakfast fare. (It’s open daily beginning at 8 a.m.) And, of course, the consummate bartenders and Negroni-heavy cocktail menu are stellar; order the Negroni Blanco. 631 Ninth Ave., East Village, 855.634.7664 Need a nightcap? Understory at the Sky Deck at Del Mar Highlands Town Center is happy to help. Named for the dimly lit middle layer of the forest, the Marco Ulloadesigned hangout is accented by woodsy greenery and tree-like pillars. In addition to Understory’s usual menu of flora/fauna-themed cocktails, guests can order from the new “Nocturnal” late-night drink

menu (available daily from 9 p.m. to midnight). Selections are bartender’s choice, change seasonally, and include vodka, whiskey and tequila-based creations; plus bottles for purchase. 12841 El Camino Real, Suite 209-210, Del Mar, 858.925.7022 Back downtown—inside the renovated, historical Guild Hotel (formerly the Army-Navy YMCA building, circa 1924)—have a seat at The Guild Bar. It’s an elegant, European-inspired space punctuated by velvet furnishings and a sleek main bar. Behind it, you’ll find seasoned cocktail masters shaking and stirring up concoctions comprising the new libations menu. Each is inspired by local history, with fun names such as the Corporate Rebel, Open Door Policy and The Dew Drop. Be sure to ask your bartender to tell their tales. 500 W. BEYOND THE BURRITO FROM BONE MARROW AND BIRRIA TO A TASTE OF TULUM, MEXICAN CUISINE IN S.D. IS DELICIOUSLY DIVERSE

WHEN TUETANO TAQUERIA—a quaint San Ysidro taco shop near the U.S.-Mexico border—became one of just five local restaurants to be recognized by the Michelin Guide as an “inspiring new discovery” in 2020—a national spotlight was shed upon one of San Diego’s better-kept secrets. Owner Priscilla Curiel was dishing out handmade tortillas filled with birria de res (a spicy beef stew), topped with roasted bone marrow— whose meaty butter was then scooped out and spread over it. Tuetano’s cult following expanded, along with many minds when it comes to the often-unsung creativity behind tacos and, for that matter, “Mexican food.” The taqueria recently shuttered its San Ysidro location and reopens at the new Old Town Urban Market on Congress Street in early December —alongside Mar Rustico, Curiel’s new Mexican seafood concept. Like Tuetano, other San Diego restaurants are putting their stamp on the diversity and deliciousness that is Mexican cuisine. Pushing past the mainstream in celebration of Mexico’s many different regions and recipes, eateries are offering dishes that pay homage to culture, geography, family and tradition—blending authenticity with creativity. Following are just a few—a mix of both new and established spots—whose menus marry familiar favorites with pleasant surprises. In north Little Italy, former Mexican restaurant El Camino has been transformed into the new Camino Riviera—a dining experience operated by SDCM Restaurant Group (Kettner Exchange, The Waverly). Travel to the Yucatán Peninsula by way of executive chef Brian Redzikowski’s Tulum-inspired menu, with most ingredients sourced locally. Standout dishes include the lamb-shoulder barbacoa, “The Taco,” (crispy seabass with edible gold leaf), and “corn” ice cream with corn streusel and popcorn for dessert. The hacienda-style decor is vibrant and sexy—featuring indoor/outdoor dining, a thatched-

roof-style ceiling, glittering disco balls, lush tropical foliage, an interior courtyard, and a sultry vibe that echoes the Riviera Maya on a warm night. Drive too quickly past its unassuming outpost in Golden Hill, and you might miss the magic that is Birria El Rey. With a simple walkup window and a few outside tables, the eatery is small in frills but huge in heart and flavors. A recently expanded menu offers authentic, Tijuana-style birria that is loaded into burritos, tacos and tortas; plus specialties such as the “Birriamen” with shredded-beef birria and ramen noodles, and the cheesy “Quesabirria.” Another favorite: the consommé. It’s flavor-packed liquid comfort. Slurp it or dip the “Quesataco” in it for extra gluttony worth the guilt. In the heart of Mission Hills, La Puerta (a Gaslamp Quarter staple since 2008) has opened a second location; and it’s fun, casual and cool. The cantina sings with Sinaloa-style dishes and 100% pure, agave-tequila selections from both big-name brands and small-batch distillers. The 4,000-square-foot space (formerly The Patio on WINTER 2022 WHERE TRAVELER SAN DIEGO  11

12  SOCALPULSE.COM WINTER 2022

THIS PAGE: COURTESY IMAGES; OPPOSITE: ARLENE IBARRA

Goldfinch) boasts ample patio dining, faux crocodileskin booths, living plant walls, an adobe-style fireplace, and nostalgic, music-inspired artwork by Marc Sandoval. La Puerta is known for its fresh-squeezed margaritas, high-quality familiar fare (street tacos, papas fritas, quesadillas), and one-pound burritos. But three signature dishes are especially worth the food-coma risk: the T.J. Dawg & Fries, with two bacon-wrapped turkey hot dogs; the Carnitas & Pancakes; and the Torta La Puerta with achiote pork, skirt steak, ham and jack cheese. On the Mexican fine-dining front, Javier’s at Westfield UTC delivers. The restaurant is an experience and destination unto itself—like stepping into a posh Mexican resort. Inside, a massive, rope-like light canopy glitters up from the center of the main bar and spans the ceiling of the lounge. Eye candy abounds at every turn, with fire features, modern fountains, mosaic tiling, lush greenery and stylish patrons sipping margaritas. Dine on premium steaks, scallops, Maine lobster enchiladas, Mexican prawns bathed in wine sauce and garlic butter, and arguably the best carnitas plate on this side of the border. Slow-cooked, tender pork meat is pan-fried on the bone to crispy, golden perfection—served with corn tortillas. At the Alila Marea Beach Resort in Encinitas, executive chef Claudette Zepeda—a San Diego native, Top Chef alum and James Beard “Best Chef West” semifinalist— is doing something special at VAGA Restaurant & Bar. While VAGA is not a “Mexican restaurant” per se, you’ll find nods to Zepeda’s Mexican heritage and extensive travels through the country in many dishes. In fact, “vaga,” which means “to roam or wander,” has been Zepeda’s nickname since she was a child—used most often by her abuelita (grandmother), who shared her adventurous

spirit. The menu reflects this love of wanderlust, blending local ingredients with flavors of Baja and beyond for a dining experience that is uniquely San Diegan. This means dishes such as yellowtail crudo with fermented pineapple and spicy blackgarlic sauce; scallops with macadamia nuts, chili oil, heirloom corn and roastedplantain puree; and Baja sea bass with Marcona-almond basmati. Watch Zepeda in action in the open kitchen, while taking in postcard-worthy ocean views. For a modern, “global” taco shop experience, stop by Pure Taco—the elevated fast-casual concept by the cofounders of nearby Casero Taqueria in Carlsbad. The new spot offers a range of tacos that incorporate flavors from around the world, served on hand-pressed tortillas. Selections include citrus-braised pork, green-curry shrimp, pho beef, Korean roast pork, traditional pastor and grilled mahi-mahi. Or choose from burritos, ahi-poke nachos, salads and bowls (try the chicken-tikka-masala bowl); plus margaritas, palomas and local beers on tap. The decor is bright and airy, accented with colorful iron stools and artwork. In Oceanside, be whisked away to Baja’s bourgeoning Valle de Guadalupe wine region with Valle—the new fine-dining restaurant by revered chef Roberto Alcocer. The flagship of the new beachfront Mission Pacific Hotel, Valle wows with northern Mexico fare and ocean views. Alcocer—who has worked in Michelin-starred kitchens and opened restaurants across Mexico—has dreamt up plates such as California sea urchin with roasted-bonemarrow crème brûlée and cotija cheese; Baja-farmed abalone tacos with roasted cauliflower and fermented habanero; and Ensenada black cod with white garlic. A full bar spotlights agave cocktails and Baja wines.

Downtown ENJOY A SLICE OF CITY LIFE IN THESE LIVELY, HISTORICAL DOWNTOWN NEIGHBORHOODS

GASLAMP QUARTER Real estate developer Alonzo Erastus Horton envisioned a bustling port city, and in 1867, he spent $264 for 800 acres he called “New Town.” Today, New Town is known as the historical Gaslamp Quarter. Comprising more than 16 square blocks, the Gaslamp stretches from Broadway to Harbor Drive, with Fourth, Fifth and Sixth avenues as its main thoroughfares. The Gaslamp’s immaculately preserved, Victorian-style buildings are home to dozens of restaurants, clubs, theaters and retailers. Tour guides offer an

insider’s look at the area, or explore it on your own. If you start your exploration at the southern end of the Gaslamp, be sure to visit the Art of Tim Cantor Gallery (527 Fourth Ave.) for conceptual art and oil paintings. Shop for preowned luxury watches at Nikki & Co. Fine Jewelers (562 Fifth Ave.); sporty apparel at Quiksilver (470 Fifth Ave.); and locally made home goods and artisanal gifts at Gaslamp Artisan Market (599 Fifth Ave.). Also check out the luxe cineplex Theatre Box (701 Fifth Ave.), home to the Sugar Factory American Brasserie.

14  SOCALPULSE.COM WINTER 2022

There’s also culture to be had nearby. San  Diego Repertory Theatre performs intimate, provocative shows at Lyceum Stage; and historical Balboa Theatre hosts performing arts yearround. And stroll through Horton Plaza Park— home to an amphitheater and art installations. Keep in mind that parking can be dicey in the Gaslamp; a garage is your best bet. We suggest Park It On Market (619.818.9137) and 6th & K Parkade. (619.233.3994). For more helpful info, call the Gaslamp Quarter Association (619.233.5227).

DOWNTOWN’S CORE Arts and culture abound here. Designed by revered architect Rob Quigley, The New Children’s Museum

(200 W. Island Ave.) is a wonderland of educational and interactive kids exhibits; and the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum (404 Third Ave.) is outfitted with a garden and koi pond. San Diego Symphony, based at Copley Symphony Hall, now performs at its new outdoor concert venue on the bay: The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park; while San Diego Opera and Broadway/San Diego present shows at the Civic Theatre (1100 Third Ave.); and the Spreckels Theatre (121 Broadway) hosts the ballet, concerts and more.

EAST VILLAGE Petco Park (100 Park Blvd.) and San Diego Central Library (330 Park Blvd.) are landmarks of this edgy ‘hood. Enjoy some fresh air and green space

at Fault Line Park (1433 Island Ave.). For some retail therapy, Wild Dove Boutique (740 Market St.) sells chic women’s wear. The area’s burgeoning art scene includes a few notable outposts: Space 4 Art (340 16th St.), a gallery/arts center where artists live and work; and Sparks Gallery (530 Sixth Ave.), a contemporary art space in a historical building that hosts exhibits.

LITTLE ITALY A few blocks north of downtown, Little Italy is home to restaurants, galleries, boutiques and markets along the main drag, India Street. Highlights: gastropub Nolita Hall (2305 India St.) and craft beer tasting room Ballast

Point (2215 India St.); a handful of galleries, such as Mee Shim Fine Art (1943 India St.), featuring mixed-media works by the South Korea native; and cool specialty shops. Take time to explore the streets branching off from India, too. The colorful cottages of the Fir Street Shops include Love & Aesthetics (621 W. Fir St.), stocked with rare artwork, house wares, bath products, jewelry and gift items; and Vitreum (619 W. Fir St.), specializing in simple, elegant ceramics. On Cedar, Vocabulary (414 W. Cedar St.) is a chic shop featuring emerging designers; while Remedy Holistic Pharmacy (320 W. Cedar St.) offers health and wellness products.

Running parallel to India Street, Kettner Boulevard forms the spine of the art-and-design district. A gallery cluster near the corner of Kettner and Kalmia includes Adelman Fine Art (1980 Kettner Blvd.), showcasing original paintings, limited-edition signed prints, art glass and sculptures; and Meyer Fine Art Inc. (2400 Kettner Blvd., #104), specializing in prints and works on paper. And stop by the popular Mercato farmers market (600 W. Date St.), 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday.

SHOPS & GALLERIES La Jolla’s stylish streets are lined with high-end boutiques, antique stores and art galleries. Prospect Street and Girard Avenue comprise the main retail district; while gems await on the side streets, such as stationery shop Sweet Paper (7660 Fay Ave.). On Girard, La Plaza La Jolla (7863 Girard Ave.) is a fabulous luxury shopping center. We also love designer women’s apparel boutique, Laura Gambucci (7655 Girard Ave.), run by Laura herself; as well as independent bookseller D.G. Wills Books (7461 Girard Ave.), stocking

The village is also home to revered art galleries. Cosmopolitan Fine Arts (7932 Girard Ave.) showcases contemporary French impressionist paintings; and MANGELSEN: Images of Nature Gallery (7916 Girard Ave.) spotlights nature and wildlife photography by Thomas Mangelsen. Contempo rary Fine Arts Gallery (7946 Ivanhoe Ave.) has paintings, sculptures and limited-edition works by international artists. La Jolla Boulevard heads south toward Bird Rock, where stylish boutiques for women await, including Bobbi Rocco (5701 La Jolla Blvd.). While in the area, pick up a loaf of freshly baked bread at Wayfarer Bread & Pastry (5525 La Jolla Blvd.). La Jolla Shores, just a short drive up Torrey Pines

ARTS & SCIENCE The University of Cali fornia, San Diego (9500 Gilman Drive) is home to La Jolla Playhouse. The theater was founded in 1947 by actors Mel Ferrer, Dorothy McGuire and Gregory Peck. The Stuart Collection also adds to UC San Diego’s artistic setting—highlighted by a 24-foot, giant teddy bear made of boulders; and a 560-foot-long “Snake Path.” Just north of the 1,200-acre campus is the Salk Institute for Biological Studies (10010 N. architectural masterpiece designed by Louis Kahn. The scientific research complex was named after Dr. Jonas Salk, who discovered the polio vaccine and later lived in La Jolla. Southwest of campus sits the famous Scripps Institution of Oceanog raphy (8622 Kennel Way) and Birch Aquarium (2300 Expedition Way); both are top-rated oceanlife learning centers. In La Jolla Village, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (closed for renovations) is housed in the former home of Ellen Browning Scripps. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall St.) features art exhibits; and The Conrad (7600 Fay Ave.), home of La Jolla

Music Society, is a stateof-the-art concert hall.

RECREATION La Jolla is made for adventurous ocean lovers. The Cove (1100 Coast Blvd.) hosts swimmers, snorkelers and kayakers daily. To explore, visit La Jolla Kayak (2199 Avenida de la Playa) and Hike Bike Kayak (2222 Avenida de la Playa) for rentals and guided tours. La Jolla Shores (8200 Camino del Oro) has easy access for scuba divers. Windansea (6800 Neptune Place) is an idyllic surfing break. The Children’s Pool cove near Ellen Browning Scripps Park is a place to observe wildlife—namely the harbor seals and sea lions that sunbathe there.

TORREY PINES Just north of La Jolla Village sits the 2,000-acre Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, with 8 miles of hiking trails that wind through wind-sculpted pines and wildflowers. It was established to protect the nation’s rarest pine tree, the Pinus torreyan. One of the reserve’s trails leads directly to Torrey Pines State Beach, which spans 4.5 miles from Del Mar to the cliffs at Torrey Pines Mesa. It’s a great place for swimming and fishing. Beach Cities FROM CORONADO TO PACIFIC BEACH, WELCOME TO SOCAL’S MOST SCENIC SEASIDE ‘HOODS

CORONADO Coronado is an island with small-town charm. Well, it’s not really an island, though many locals call it that. It’s an isthmus, attached to the mainland at the southern end of Silver Strand State Beach. Driving there via the 2.1-mile-long Coronado Bridge is a thrill, but it’s also fun to travel by sea. The Coronado/San Diego Ferry leaves on the hour from downtown’s Broadway Pier between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. (619.234.4111). Upon arrival, check out the shops and restaurants at Coronado Ferry Landing (1201 First St.).

Head south on Orange Avenue to find an inviting retail district, with shops such as Root 75 Flowers & Home (845 Orange Ave.); Coronado Taste of Oils (954 Orange Ave.) to sample olive oils and vinegars; and Blue Jeans and Bikinis (971 Orange Ave.) for clothing and swimwear. Pick up a paperback at Bay Books (1007 Orange Ave.), and pop into The Attic (1112 10th St.) for home accents and jewelry. Find more boutiques inside the iconic Hotel del Coronado (1500 Orange Ave.), opened in 1888 and a National Historic

Landmark. The Coronado Historical Association and Coronado Museum (1100 Orange Ave.) offers more info on the town’s history. Other Coronado gems include Wag’n Tails (945 Orange Ave.) for pet pampering and supplies; Art & Frames by Wood Gallery (936 Orange Ave.); and Emerald C Gallery (1331 Orange Ave.) for art inspiration. Another Coronado landmark, the Lamb’s Players Theatre (1142 Orange Ave.) is the area’s best ensemble outfit. And make time to play in the surf at worldfamous Coronado Beach.

SHELTER ISLAND / HARBOR ISLAND Shelter Island and Harbor Island aren’t really “islands” either; they’re connected to the mainland and were created with

tons of sand dredged from the bay. Shelter Island, with its seafood restaurants and nautically themed stores, is the departure point for sportfishing charters. The area is also home to concert venue Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. Nearby Harbor Island has its own, smaller outdoor festival site, Spanish Landing Park. Both islands offer postcard vistas of the skyline, plus flat paths for scenic walks and bike rides.

OCEAN BEACH & POINT LOMA “O.B.” for short, this neighborhood is truly one of San Diego’s most unique. It’s an aggregation of aging hippies, surfers, bikers, artists, musicians and other free spirits. The main drag, Newport Avenue, smells

of incense and has many shops catering to the O.B. lifestyle; plus cool spots like award-winning winery Gianni Buonomo Vintners (4836 Newport Ave.). Music junkies will love the vintage vinyl at Cow Records (5040 Newport Ave.); while Galactic Comics (4981 Newport Ave.) is heaven for graphic-novel fans. Nearby, The Sanctuary Wellness Experience (1955 Cable St.) offers holistic beauty and wellness products and treatments. Wind down the day with a stroll along the Ocean Beach Pier, or romp with the pooches at Ocean Beach Dog Beach. Nearby, Point Loma is home to Liberty Public Market (2820 Historic Decatur Road) and the

Arts District Liberty Station (2825 Dewey Road). There’s also Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery and the Cabrillo National Monument— which offers panoramic views from the city to Mexico; plus hiking trails, tidepools, a historical lighthouse, and exhibits about conquistador Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo—the founder of San Diego.

MISSION BEACH & PACIFIC BEACH The two popular beaches form an unbroken band of sand that stretches for 3 miles. Both are overflowing with restaurants, bars and boutiques. South Mission Beach is home to beach volleyball and bayside basketball games.

Farther north, Belmont Park (3146 Mission Blvd.) is San Diego’s iconic beachfront amusement park since 1925—featuring the Giant Dipper roller coaster. Another landmark dating back to 1925 is Crystal Pier, at the foot of Garnet Avenue in P.B. This 400-foot-long wooden pier is gated and lined with rental cottages and fishermen during the day. The best way to experience this area is to walk along the boardwalk—a constant parade of skateboarders, cyclists and joggers. Then walk across Mission Boulevard to the quieter bayside boardwalk. Garnet Avenue and Mission Boulevard form the backbone of this funky, retro retail district, which

boasts dozens of small shops filled with surfing gear, swimsuits and casual wear. Begin the 10-block shopping stroll where the two main streets intersect, then head east. Find that perfect bikini at Brazil Anna (954 Garnet Ave.) and Gone Bananas (3785 Mission Blvd.); and cute frocks at Bouluci Boutique (845 Garnet Ave.).

MISSION BAY PARK This 4,000-acre park is ideal for running, biking, kite-flying, sailing, standup paddle-boarding and boating. Sportfishing charters depart daily from Mission Bay, with watercraft rentals available. The bay’s west side is also home to SeaWorld. Don’t miss the Shark Encounter.

Construction on the still-active Church of the Immaculate Conception began in 1868 in an effort to replace the existing adobe structure with brick, but was not completed for 50 years. And the Whaley House Museum, built in 1857, is reportedly haunted.

Farther up San Diego Avenue, behind an adobe wall, is El Campo Santo, the city’s first cemetery circa 1850; and the San Diego Sheriff’s Museum and Educational Center (2384 San Diego Ave.), built 100 feet from where the city’s original cobblestone jail once stood. DEL MAR Del Mar’s celebrity status began 85 years ago, when the oceanside paradise became the home of the Del Mar Racetrack (2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd.). Bing Crosby and Pat O’Brien established the track and hosted the Hollywood elite at the Thoroughbred Club. Ava Gardner, W.C. Fields, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Jimmy Durante and Mickey Rooney were among the regulars in the late 1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s. Today, the main racing season runs from mid-July to September; and events are held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds year-round.

Jimmy Durante Boulevard—named for the legendary entertainer who lived in Del Mar—paves the way from the track to the heart of the village, centered by Camino del Mar and 15th Street. Del Mar Plaza offers ocean views, dining and upscale shops such as Sea Biscuit Del Mar (1555 Camino Del Mar, #318), stocking apparel and gifts; and CoCo Rose (1555 Camino Del Mar, #325), carrying resort wear from Bali.
