Ed’s Letter With just five months to go before we take to the streets of Notting Hill Carnival, changes are afoot to increase the relevance of Children’s Day, which this year falls on Sunday 27 August. Over the past few years, Carnival Sunday has become dominated by adult bands playing dutty mas. If organisers LNHCET have their way, that could change. Could this be the time for Notting Hill to take a leaf out of Trinidad’s book by introducing ‘Sunday Wear’? Our May issue will be dedicated to masquerade (mas). Soca News will be bringing you all you need to know about playing mas in Notting Hill, who’s playing what and what it’s going to cost you to participate and not just spectate.

Trinidadian civil rights activist Darcus Howe has died aged 74
W
riter, broadcaster and activist Darcus Howe has died at the age of 74. Darcus was born on 26 February 1943 in Trinidad, where his father was a vicar and his mother a teacher. In 1961 he came to the United Kingdom where he campaigned for black rights for more than 50 years. He made his name in the British Black Panthers, and as editor of Race Today constantly challenged racism in politics and the police. In print and on screen, he gained a reputation as an eloquent and frequently provocative speaker, presenting hard-hitting current affairs programmes such as The Devil’s Advocate. A participant in Notting Hill Carnival from its earliest days on the road, Darcus became its chair. He was one of the ‘Mangrove Nine’ arrested on 9 August 1970 when a huge force of police stormed a peaceful protest march against harassment. At the subsequent trial at the Old Bailey, Darcus defended himself and was acquitted of the charge of riot. Howe and his fellow defendants effectively turned the tables, putting the Met’s unethical tactics in the dock. His death was confirmed by his biographer Robin Bruce, who said Mr Howe “died peacefully in his sleep” at his Streatham home on Saturday 1 April. His wife Leila Hassan confirmed the news. A film telling the story of the Mangrove Nine is reported to be in preparation.
Saint Lucian Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott laid to rest
P
oet and playwright, Sir Derek Alton Walcott passed away at his home at Cap Estate, Saint Lucia, on Friday 17 March 2017. He was 87 and had been unwell for some time. Walcott, who was born on 23 January 1930, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992 for his epic poem, Omeros. In 2011 he was awarded the TS Eliot Prize and the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature for his poetry collection White Egrets. He received a Lifetime Recognition Award in 2015 from the Griffin Trust for excellence in poetry. He was knighted in 2016 and was among three Saint Lucians to receive the Knight and Dame Commander of the Order of St Lucia awards, conferred by Governor General Dame Pearlette Louisy as part of the island’s 37 years of independence celebrations. The funeral service for Walcott was held on Saturday 25 March at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Castries. SN APR 2017 05

Indefinite leave to remain: Moko Jumbies at the British Museum
T
wo years ago Soca News reported that the British Museum had commissioned photographer, film-maker and sculptor Zak Ové to produce two moko jumbie sculptures as part of its Celebrating Africa season. The British Museum has now made these 7-metretall figures a permanent part of its display in the Sainsbury African Galleries. The moko jumbie is an ole mas character from Trinidad Carnival, usually portrayed with a long colourful skirt or trousers over their stilts and a mask covering their face. In Trinidadian folklore, the moko jumbie’s height allowed him to see danger approaching and so was considered the protector of the village. The character is one that Ové has explored through his photography at Trinidad Carnival, which he has described as “a war being played out with costume and theatre”. The British Museum said that the inclusion of these figures in its permanent display “acknowledges the culture and history of peoples of African ancestry who were forcibly transported to the Caribbean through the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Today, African diaspora populations continue to commemorate their heritage through carnival in multi-cultural cities.” Entry to the British Museum is free. Lottery funding puts Reading Carnival back on the road
L
ottery funding has ensured that Reading Carnival will once again take to the streets of the Berkshire town on Bank Holiday Monday 29 May. The carnival has been plagued with funding issues over its 40-year history. After a stripped-back event in 2014, it was cancelled in 2015 and 2016, following an all-too-familiar pattern for UK carnivals. The news of its resurrection in 2017 has been greeted with undisguised delight by carnival enthusiasts in Reading and beyond. The organisers are urging Soca News readers in the area to find out how they can get involved. The carnival is holding an open day from 1pm to 3pm on Saturday 8 April at The Alliance for Cohesion and Racial Equality (ACRE) building, St Giles Court, Southampton Street, Reading RG1 2QL. Or for more information, email ccgofficial@gmail or visit the carnival’s Facebook page www.facebook. com/readingccgofficial.
New Beacon Books shines on
F
insbury Park’s famous Black bookshop, New Beacon Books (NBB), celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016. Unfortunately, following some difficult years, by January that event looked as though it might be its last. The owners turned to social media to introduce the bookshop to a new audience and a new generation of readers. The tactic proved gratifyingly successful, and NBB is now enjoying a vibrant renaissance, with book sales reaching levels not seen for years. The owners thanked all who responded to the rallying cry as well as those who donated to the gofundme page. The fund is now closed but exceeded its initial £10,000 goal to raise £12,723. New Beacon said they were appreciative and humbled by the way the community had supported them from all over the country. Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, a long-time friend of the bookshop, not only offered his support but gave it immediately by buying four books. New Beacon Books says it looks forward to the space becoming a real community hub once again, holding events like book launches, reading clubs and classes. A weekly Yoruba language class is already under way and an Ifa Learning Circle begins in April. New Beacon Books can be found at 76 Stroud Green Road, London N4 3EN; tel: 020 7272 4889 or 07921 992 836. Opening hours are 1.30–6pm Wednesday–Saturday.
Flipo says call him Azaryah
H
e first came to our attention with his mega hit Doh Tell Meh Dat in 2014 and Flipo (Seumas Callender) has been consistent since that time with tracks such as Far Away and Oh Gosh on the Loud Riddim. But for 2017 the artiste formerly known as Flipo has rebranded himself Azaryah, according to a news release issued on 7 March. Azaryah has been blessed with amazing opportunities in his former guise, having worked with acts Major Lazer for the remix of Doh Tell Meh Dat. He has also landed on billboard.com after a collaboration with Bad Royale producing a rendition of Above and Beyond’s Fly To New York. Azaryah says there are four newly recorded songs ready for release, three of which have international appeal. The first of these, Hottest Thing, is available now. If Azaryah continues to deliver what we have come to expect of Flipo then his future is assured. FOR MORE NEWS VISIT

Former calypso monarch Akima Paul appointed Grenada’s High Commissioner WORDS | JOSEPH CHARLES
F
ormer London Calypso Monarch Akima Paul-Lambert has been appointed Grenada’s High Commissioner to the UK. Akima, who won the title in 2009 with Passport Love, was unable to defend her title at the ABC Calypso Tent the following year because of work commitments. As well as winning the London crown, Akima has also taken titles in her native Grenada and written winning compositions for other performers there. The appointment was revealed on Tuesday 14 March 2017 and is subject to a two-month approval process. Once confirmed, she will be appointed High Commissioner to the Court of St James (ie the United Kingdom) and also non-resident ambassador to the Holy See (the Vatican). She will not take a salary for this role. Born and raised in Victoria, Grenada, Akima went to St Joseph’s Convent. She first came to prominence while championing the cause of environmental protection in a local newspaper, as

a result of which she became, at 15, one of the youngest people to receive the United Nations Global 500 Award for services to the environment. In 2001 Akima won the Grenada Soca Monarch contest – only the second woman to do so – with her song Prostitute. At 18 she went to Cambridge University to study Law and then a Masters at the University of Paris. Akima returned to the UK where she now practises as a dual-qualified UK solicitor-advocate and US litigation attorney involved in complex commercial litigation, cross-border investigations and arbitration. She was nominated as a Rising Star in the 2014 edition of Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers, but still finds time to write poetry.

CALYPSO QUEEN OF THE WORLD WORDS | JOSEPH CHARLES PHOTO | BECAUSE MUSIC
S
ome of us know Calypso Rose because we are of that age and grew up with her music. Others, though, may not have a clue about this Tobago girl. However, over the past few months Rose has catapulted herself firmly back in to our ears with her contagious and catchy 2016 track Leave Me Alone. This hard-working 76-year-old was christened Rose McCartha Linda Sandy-Lewis. Her sobriquet, Calypso Rose, befits a woman of her talent and stature. She’s Calypso Queen of the World, arguably the most successful and prolific female artiste the Caribbean has ever produced, and one of those rare people you can truly call a legend in their own lifetime. In the early days, she gave us tracks such as Fire In Meh Wire, Give Me More Tempo, Underneath The Mango Tree and No Mister. And that’s just to name a few – her back catalogue and the range of styles it encompasses is remarkable. continues over...
SN APR 2017 011
Rose transcends music and has had a film depicting her life and times made about her, titled Calypso Rose: Lioness in the Jungle, which showcased at the 64th Cannes Film Festival in 2011. The film was made by two French production companies, Maturity Productions and Dynamo Productions, in co-operation with T&T Film Company. Jean-Michel Gibert, one of the producers, was full of praise for the iconic calypsonian. Gibert said that after making a film on calypso music seven years ago, filmmakers saw Rose as a character who needed further expansion. Four years later they began work on Calypso Rose: Lioness in the Jungle with French Cameroon director Pascale Obolo. The film follows Rose through different parts of the world as she continues her fight for women’s causes and interacts with fans. Gibert said the documentary was not only about Rose’s life in calypso, but also about her struggles. In February this year Rose was nominated in the category of World Music Album of the Year in the category Les Victoires de La Musique. This annual award ceremony is the French equivalent of the Brit Awards or the US Grammys, and Rose was victorious. Her album Far From Home, which has almost gone Platinum in France with sales currently at 80,000 plus, had stiff competition in its category from Acid Arab, with Music of France, and Rokia Traore, with Born So.
012 SN APR 2017
The 12 tracks on Far From Home – which was released in France, are: Abatina, I Am African, Leave Me Alone featuring Manu Chao, Far From Home, Calypso Queen, Zoom Zoom Zoom, Trouble, Love Me Or Leave Me, No Madame, Woman Smarter, Human Race and Wah Fu Dance! Rose has been touring extensively in France and a quick look at her Facebook page shows that between 6 April and 20 August she will perform at 28 events. Even in her eighth decade, there is no stopping this Calypso Queen of the World.
The album features 12 tracks. Far From Home is now available to buy for £7.99 on iTunes.

Better management IS THE KEY GOAL FOR NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL SAYS COUNCIL
L
WORDS | STEPHEN SPARK
ondon Notting Hill Carnival Enterprises Trust (LNHCET) has reportedly accepted the need to bring in professional help to run London’s annual carnival, which last year celebrated its golden jubilee. According to a report submitted to the Public Realm Scrutiny Committee of the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea (RBKC) on 27 March, LNHCET has finally recognised that it needs to employ an event management company. In recent years, this small group of volunteers has struggled to maintain its hold on the festival and has been heavily criticised for its ineffectiveness by police, politicians,
councils, residents, media and carnival participants. Professional management would ensure that a single organiser is responsible for all aspects of the event, including planning, health and safety, managing contractors and participants, and “improving and developing the artistic experience of Carnival”. An event manager would also exercise better control over participants, “ensuring that the nature of their participation is appropriate for the event nature and venue” (the report does not reveal which existing forms of participation are considered inappropriate). A major aim of the proposed strategy would be SN APR 2017 015

to reduce the amount of police needed to maintain law and order and public safety at the event, which attracts more than a million people. Policing is costly because it involves Sunday and bank holiday overtime pay, and it is hoped that “a significant number of high quality stewards” can be employed to take over some of these duties. RBKC supports carnival financially, but is in the final year of its funding agreement with LNHCET. The Trust is said to accept the need to place the event on a more sustainable footing, but currently lacks the resources to make this happen. However, it has pledged to “explore all income opportunities” including creating a sponsorship strategy and taking over stall pitches from the council, which it could then use to generate revenue – as used to happen in the past. The most contentious point is the suggestion that the Trust should review, with its partners, “the feasibility, legality and impact of ticketing Carnival”. Whenever this proposal is raised it generates a backlash from opponents who argue passionately that Carnival should be free for all to attend. There would, in any case, be immense challenges in controlling entry and exit to such a large urban area while
016 SN APR 2017
allowing free movement for residents. A professional event manager would be expected to “counter the current negative narrative attached to Carnival” and “to provide considerably more information on Carnival to residents and the community in future”. The Trust’s public relations and media handling are widely agreed to be lamentable, and have allowed a strident anti-Carnival tone to flourish unchecked in sections of the UK media. The council report was itself the victim of inaccurate reporting. London’s daily paper, the Evening Standard, on 3 April headlined its article “Council in renewed call for Notting Hill Carnival to be ticket-only event”. A spokesman for RBKC told Soca News: “It [the report] does not call for ticketing and the Council has never called for ticketing… it is simply looking at proposals from the organisers.” Despite some concerns, the council remains broadly supportive of Notting Hill Carnival. The report, by the executive director for leisure and amenity services, states: “Notting Hill Carnival is part of London’s history and forms an iconic part of our identity as a global city. The event is unique and has grown organically over the years since its inception, to become distinctly different in scale and composition.”

SHE IS READY TO BREAK THE WORLD WORDS | ADANNA AUSTIN
W
hen you hear the name Fay-Ann Lyons anywhere in the Caribbean you can tell she is cherished. Women would love to have her ability to control her waistline and men cannot take their eyes off her. Her music makes any true Caribbean person want to drop and roll or carry their heavy-T bumper. Fay-Ann’s name is synonymous with both groovy and power soca. She was born into a musical family, being the daughter of Lynette Steele and Austin Lyons, better known as Lady Gypsy and Superblue, respectively. Since she hit the headlines at the tender age of 21, she continues to leave a bigger mark each year. She is one of the few ladies in soca who not only carries the Trinidad and Tobago flag high, but also keeps soca accessible to everyone. In this very male-dominated profession Fay-Ann has not just survived but flourished. She is married to one of the most sought-after artists, but has created her own legacy and continues to surprise her fans with her creativity. She is the first and only female soca artists to have won the Groovy Soca Monarch, Power Soca Monarch and the People’s Choice Award all in one year.
SN APR 2017 023
Now she is preparing to Break the World! This year sees the launch of her first full-length EP, which is available on Amazon, itunes and Apple, and in VP stores. The album is a mix of typical Fay-Ann songs with that diverse mix of styles she has made her own. The album infuses all genres of music, from Afrobeat to zouk, while retaining soca at its core. The title track, Break the World, is also the title of her tour. The Afrobeats come together succinctly in Block De Road, with guest vocals from Stonebwoy. Listening to her very popular Raze, who would not be moved by the Caribbean drum rhythms? She even mixes in electronic dance music and soca on Catch Me, and of course she must get her feet wet with a chutney-soca mix on Din Ta Da. When asked why she feels she’s ready now to take her music on to a global stage, Fay-Ann replied that her catalogue of music gives her great traction to be recognised globally. She continues to sing the praises of VP Records for giving her artistic and creative control to pick her team and the songs for the album. She has collaborated with many other talents in the music industry including Richie Beretta, Stadic Sound Productions, Keron ‘Sheriff Mumbles’ Thomas, Dwain Antrobus, Kevin Marshall and Darien Bailey
024 SN APR 2017
Fay-Ann and her team will tour extensively to promote the new album. But with such a hectic schedule how does this wife, mother and performing artist manage to keep on top of everything? She’s adamant it’s about working smarter rather than harder. It boils down to “eliminating about all the non-productive activities in her life and staying focused”. That’s sound advice from a phenomenal artist.
The album features 16 tracks all of which are written by Fay-Ann Lyons. Break The World is now available to buy (£8.00 & £8.69) or stream on Amazon, iTunes and Spotify.

TJE has been enhancing Tobago’s local music scene over a nine day period each April since 2005. Trinbagonians and music-lovers from afar converge for this celebration of jazz and the indigenous music genres of the region. Staying true to its promise of offering ‘much more than music¹, however, the festival incorporates the cultural and historical practices that define the island of Tobago.
The first carnival was staged in 1912 during the final years of Danish occupation. It lapsed during World War I, but was revived in 1952. Included are the familiar elements of carnival such as a calypso competition, J’Ouvert and mas; there are also events such as a boat race, Greased Pig Contest, a food fair and Toddlers’ Derby to entertain everyone at the festivities.

JAMAICA
Carnival in Jamaica began in the ’40s, when UWI students recreated campus versions of their home islands’ festivals. Jump to 1990, as Byron Lee & Friends staged the inaugural JA Carnival, the first mas festival in the Land of Wood and Water. Three decades later it became the Kingston Metropolitan Area’s premier festival and one of the biggest Jamaican events. JA’s jump up begins when Lent is over, with a series of big fetes, and climaxes with road march partying on the Sunday after Easter, when masqueraders chip through the capital’s New Kingston area. 2017 sees the event return after a seven-year break. Expect to see reggae superstar Beenie Man, as well as Trinidadian soca artist 5 Star Akil.
