LETTER I can hear a song in the faint distance: “Beat the drum, sun or rain, it’s carnival time again”. It’s unbelievable how far in advance we start thinking about the next carnival. No time is lost when one finishes, we’re straight into the next, reminding ourselves that in another 363 days we will be doing this all over again. But maybe that’s the only way for the human mind to cope with the closing of such an intense, life-affirming time. London has seen an explosion of new mas bands, and I applaud those who are brave enough to commit to creating costumes and all the hard work required. The UK Soca Monarch competition is upon us again. We have extended the closing date for entry to midnight of Monday 16 June, so it’s time to find your inner crooner (well, for the Groovy section, anyway). The final will take place at The Garage on Saturday 16 August. I started to write this letter and thought why is it I do this? After all there’s no fame, fortune, females or fast cars that come with this genre of music that has infected us, for which no one can seem to find a cure. It must be love. We are always looking for new writers, and I have been told that everyone has at least one good story in them. Over three years ago, filmmaker and pan lover Jean Michel Gibert set about making Pan! Our Music Odyssey, a ‘transmedia project promoting the steelband movement internationally, with an 80 minute docufiction telling the human adventure of pan from its genesis through re-enactment stories to its propagation all around the world.’ Gibert and his team continue to work tirelessly to have the film and its message of peace seen and understood by the world. Approximately $50,000 / €36,000 must be raised in order to complete the film’s post production in time for its first professional screening on 26 June at La Rochelle, in France. Post production costs include an updated promotional trailer and package and accommodation for pannists from Trinidad and Tobago while in La Rochelle for the screening. The legendary composer and soloist Ray Holman is amongst those due to travel to France from Trinidad. Passionate about pan? 12 bridges of london sponsored walk The Anse-La-Raye (St Lucia) Association UK is hosting a sponsored walk on the 22 June. The organisation continues to raise awareness of Lupus, a debilitating autoimmune condition (where the immune system attacks healthy cells), which is becoming more prevalent in the black community. The most potentially fatal type of Lupus is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which may affect one in every 625 Afro-Caribbean women in the UK (compared to one in every 5,000 Caucasian women). Symptoms of the condition can include anxiety, depression, hair loss, skin rash and swelling, and it can be life threatening. Anse-La-Raye is aiming to raise £3000 from the walk, which will be split between Lupus UK, the St Lucia Arthritis and Lupus Association, and towards the cost of a day trip for disabled and senior citizens. Soca News encourages its readers to work and walk with Anse-La-Raye, helping them to raise the money for such a worthy cause. grenada’s spicemas 2014 begins Thousands of carnival lovers in Grenada’s capital, St George’s, welcomed the launch of Spicemas 2014 on 2 June. This year’s launch was described as the biggest ever, drawing an enormous crowd from all over the island. A carpet effect was created in the street, as patrons lined the length of the city’s Port Highway. The launch featured several artists, including the current Calypso Monarch Katurah George, Groovy Monarch Blacka Dan, Panorama champions Coyaba New Dimension and Soca Monarch and Road March winner Boyzie. Senator Brenda Hood, Grenada’s Minister for Culture and Heritage, revealed the theme of this year’s Spicemas as ‘Uniquely Rooted in Our Rich Ancestral Traditions; Spicemas 2014: An Explosion of Soca and Calypso’. As the crowd roared its approval, Senator Hood went on to urge corporate citizens to support Spicemas 2014. The minister similarly called upon patrons to show their support by attending various events throughout the season, especially those with an emphasis on calypso and steelpan, and also by playing mas. Spicemas continues into June, July and August with numerous carnival-related events. The action will be heated by Friday 8 August, and the climax is on Tuesday 12 August. miami carnival 2014 celebrates 30 years Miami Broward Carnival takes place this year on Sunday 12 October in South Florida, and celebrates 30 years of carnival. Miami Broward One Carnival Host Committee Inc. (MBOCHCI) is a collaboration between Miami Carnival Inc. (MCI) and Broward Caribbean Carnival Inc. (BCCI). Both entities renewed their event management agreement before confirming that the carnival would be taking place this year; venue details are yet to be announced. There had been deep concern recently in the community about the announcement of the change of date of the Miami Carnival, but this seems to have been assuaged by a press release from the MBOCHCI stating that the original 12 October date remains accurate. The official launch of the 30th anniversary of the Miami Broward Carnival takes place on 19 July at the Sun Life Stadium (2269 NW 199th St. Miami Gardens, FL 33056). kinetika reAches higher Kinetika, the design and masquerade band, has moved into three ultra new studios at the renowned High House Production Park in Thurrock, Essex. The studios are part of the High House Artists’ Studios, an award winning building. Kinetika now counts The Royal Opera House and the Creative & Cultural Skills Academy as neighbours. The design team’s first project since moving was the making of huge flags, which were painted by local school children and members of the community for the Isle of Wight Carnival Trail, which took place from 3 to 7 May and was led by Ali Pretty and Richard White. Moving to Thurrock is seen as part of a wider initiative of cultural engagement in which Kinetika is involved. Led by Arts Council England and the Thames Gateway Partnership, the aim is to encourage and inspire young people through accessibility to meaningful cultural and creative experiences, as well as with education in these areas. Kinetika has been commissioned to lead a schools project in Epping, which will be creating flags to line the route of this year’s Tour De France.
Great British Carnival parades into Queen elizabeth Olympic Park On Sunday 27 July, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will host a carnival to celebrate the second anniversary of the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Marking the mid point between the London and Rio Olympics, the free event will open at 12pm, with the finale at 8.30pm; the day ends at 9.30pm. In homage to Rio’s most famous cultural export, London and UK carnivals are keen to show off what Britain has to offer. The Great British Carnival will create a breathtaking event of dance, infectious music, performance and costume. International and local carnival artists will perform alongside local carnivals: Newham, Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest. The best of UK carnival arts will feature an exciting programme of pop-up parades, mask-making workshops and superb family entertainment across three stages, as well as the world premiere of The Carnival of the Animals, a twilight crescendo of costumed performers, 300 dancers, giant carnivalesque creatures and extraordinary illumination. This event sounds like another must for keen carnivalists. But let’s just hope that in the future we’re not fighting for Notting Hill Carnival to stay out of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park - after all, it has less grass to be trampled than Hyde Park. Witness a musical tribute to the Mighty Sparrow? Marvel at the sculptures of Carl Gabriel? Research archives on pan, calypso or mas? See unique exhibitions of paintings, photos and installations? Listen to the mauvais langue of limers on a Saturday night? Attend a ballet class or a story telling evening? Watch the cognoscenti of North Kensington promenade by? There might be answers to some of those, but the ONLY place you can do ALL of these things is at Carnival Village - The Tabernacle and The YAA Centre. The Carnival Village Trust manages both of these key London venues, representing four major partners - Mangrove Steelband, Ebony Steelband, Association of British Calypsonians and YAA Asantewaa. The Tabernacle in Notting Hill, built in 1869, has had a lively and colourful history occupying a pivotal role in the local community. It offers one of the most beautiful and intimate performance spaces in London with its theatre, rehearsals and exhibition spaces, dance studios, meeting room, bar and restaurant. The Tabernacle is also home to Mangrove Steelband. Known as The Factory in 1979, The YAA Centre in Maida Vale is a major player in promoting African Caribbean arts and culture. In 2012, it reopened as a new arts centre with purpose-built facilities. The centre boasts a multimedia suite which offers a range of digital courses, and is the home of Ebony Steelband.
Since its inception, The Carnival Village Trust has steered the development of these two venues to become major repositories of all things Carnival, and they are key players in recording, celebrating and promoting the arts of Carnival. The Trust recognises that Carnival is not a singular art form, but an integrated framework for live performances that are rooted in a diversity of art disciplines involving the human body, space - and bacchanal! Carnival thus embraces various types of artistic expressions – music, text, movement and masquerade – performed on contested terrain – the public realm. The programmes offered by these two venues reflect this diversity of art forms and performance platforms. If you need to know anything about Carnival, or want to experience any of its diverse art forms, then The YAA Centre and The Tabernacle are the places to visit. Based on its engagement with carnivalists and research findings, the Trust has declared 2016 as the 50th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival and has initiated plans to develop a major programme of activities to mark this significant milestone. The opening event is the launch in August 2014 of a seminal piece of work, The History of Notting Hill Carnival, by local filmmaker and carnival historian, Ishmahil Blagrove. Present day carnival across the world has its roots in an amazing range of nationalities, cultures, life styles and belief. Well-documented evidence of carnival exists in the form of celebrations, masquerades, songs and traditions of West African slaves, through Europe’s Romantic period of the 1600th century, to the post emancipation period of colonial Europe in the Caribbean. Carnival in Britain has it roots in the Caribbean. Like many things in life, Caribbean Carnival in Preston started somewhat spontaneously. In an attempt to remember the great carnival back home, West Indian immigrants organised a small procession through a few streets in Preston. They begged, bought and borrowed a host of materials, carried costumes and steel drums through some of the cobbled streets, in order to bring at least one day of sunshine and fantasy to Preston. The story of St Pauls Afrikan Caribbean Carnival is one of a community’s success, from its small beginnings in the late sixties to the present day. The whole event now takes over the neighbourhood of St Pauls in Bristol, and involves schools, community groups and host professional performers. Until recently, St Pauls has had a large Afrikan Caribbean population, demonstrated by the strong community spirit shown in this annual carnival.

Carnival in the Netherland Antilles is usually celebrated in the winter or early spring, but as that time would be too cold for such outdoor festivities in Europe, carnival in Rotterdam, Holland - which is derived from that in the Dutch Antilles - is celebrated during the summer. First held on August 4, 1984 in Rotterdam as the ‘Antillian Summer Carnival’, the festival, which attracted around 900,000 visitors annually from 2004 to 2007, is now called Zomercarnaval - Dutch for Summer Carnival. Some of the most anticipated pre-carnival events are the official Zomercarnaval Queen Election, the Zomercarnaval Beach Party and the Battle of Drums competition. The climax of the Rotterdam Summer Carnival is the street parade, which is held on the Saturday. However, during and after the street parade there are two live stages, at the Coolsingel and the Churchillplein, until late in the evening. MORE INFO

BAHIA - A TERRA DA FELICIDADE
Euphoria presents Bahia - a terra da felicidade (the land of happiness), for Notting Hill Carnival 2014. They will take to the streets of London’s Notting Hill and transform them into an explosion of colour and happiness. The band will embody the essence of Bahia and celebrate its rich, diverse history, the energy and vibrancy of its people, and the spectacle that is Salvador Carnival. Euphoria features two costumed sections, Sol and Oceana, and Euphoria’s very own fun mas brand: Party Man and Party Woman. Prices range from £105 to £265, and include costume, breakfast, lunch, snacks, premium alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks all day, music and security. Bahia’s capital is one of the oldest cities in the Americas, and was Brazil’s first official capital. Salvador da Bahia was founded by the Portuguese in 1549 and is the third most populous Brazilian city. It is also known as Brazil’s capital of happiness, due to its countless popular outdoor parties and street carnival, and is where the unique Afro-Brazilian mix of dance and martial arts, Capoeira, originated; it combines agile dance moves with unarmed combat techniques.
