Vancouver Island Soccer League News

The 1st week of top flight amateur soccer competition has come to a close. An exciting weekend that saw all games played, narrowly missing some bad air situations. Here is the overall picture of what happened this weekend in division 1:

The division started off Friday in Cowichan with the hosts defeating Gorge (with a late penalty shot goal at 89') by score of 3-2. Cowichan goals by Blaze Roberts, Connor Crichton, and Michael Daniels. Gorge had markers from Jordan DeGraaf and James Cameron.

Friday also saw Vic West FC hosting Bays Utd in Sooke - and the hosts came away with a convincing 5-1 victory. Vic West goals by a Bays Own Goal, Daniel Pritchard, Salem Almardy, Marcus Campanile, and Alex Balbo. The loan marker for Bays was scored by Robert Eng. Friday wrapped up with the Game of the Week, which also doubled up as the Cup Winners Cup. This was a game between last years League Champions (Lakehill) and last years Jackson Cup winner (Nanaimo). Lakehill came out the victor with a 4-0 win. Goals were by Patrick Nelson and Craig Gorman who had 2 each. Earning his first clean sheet of the year was Keeper Hardeep Gahunia. Game MVP was Lakehill goal scoring machine, Craig Gorman. Saturday started with Powell River Villa hosting Westcastle Lakers, and they battled to a 1-1 draw. Villa’s goal scorer was James Timothy. Westcastle snuck in a late goal (86') by Taylor Ako.

The division wrapped up with the Victoria Highlanders going to Comox and winning 4-1. Highlander goals by Godwin Babu, Logan Beaverford, and Samule Vieira x 2. The lone scorer for the hosts was Kyle Bate. Fair to say that there were some interesting results over the weekend. Lakehill running away with the match was one of them, even though the game was very close for the first 30 minutes. Cowichan defeating Gorge was a surprise to some, and Westcastle earning a point in Powell River turned some heads as well. Just a great weekend of local soccer over the weekend with games up and down the whole Island. A stunning weekend up and down Vancouver Island saw all top flight amateur men's games played in week 2. Here is a quick snapshot of what took place in Division 1......some were close and pretty, some not so much. Friday started with Cowichan Axis defeating Westcastle Lakers 31 in North Cowichan. Cowichan goals were scored by Connor Crichton, Colin Knight, and Michael Daniels. Westcastle's lone marker was scored by Eric Karigo. Friday saw a very tight affair in Nanaimo as the defending Jackson Cup Champions Nanaimo Utd rebounded after last weeks shutout loss to slip by Vic West 2-1. Nanaimo had goals by Marcus Cramb and Paddy Greig. Vic West goal was scored by Kaelan Cooke.

Friday wrapped up with a high scoring affair in Oak Bay as Gorge FC defeated Bays Utd handily by score of 8-0. Gorge goals by Mike Dunham, Hussen Sayed, Austin Dickson, Bryce Marinus, James Cameron x 2, and Jordan De Graaf x 2. Earning his VISL ever VISL shutout was Keeper Hayato Matsuba. Saturday started out with a match at Timberlane Park in Powell River and the host Villa squad defeated Comox 4-0. Powell River Villa goals were scored by James Timothy, Jake Kenmuir, and Niko Cristante x 2. Supplying the clean sheet for Villa was Keeper Matt Liknes.

Saturday wrapped up with an interesting game at Starlight Stadium as Lakehill defeated the Victoria Highlanders 6-2. The opening half was completed with a scoreline of 1-1, then things opened up in the second half. Lakehill had goals from Craig Gorman, Parm Johal, Jack Hill, and Isaac Koch x 3. Highlander goals were had by Jameson Kiezik and Elijah Bean. It’s no surprise seeing defending Garrison Cup champions Lakehill at the top of the table, but a few eyebrows have been lifted seeing Cowichan Axis up there. A great weekend of local grass roots soccer on the Island. Hoping the decent weather continues as we look forward to week #3.

Week 3 in the books, and this past weekend was a perfect example of why games actually get played as opposed to just assigning points to the team that maybe should win. Early season upsets was the common theme this past weekend. Here is the snapshot of what took place. Friday night started out with a bit of a surprise at Hampton Park as Gorge toppled defending Jackson Cup Champions Nanaimo by score of 4-3. Gorge goals were from Jordan DeGraaf, a Nanaimo own goal, and 2 from Hatim El Azhari. Nanaimo goals were from Marcus Cramb, Callum Magog, and Paddy Greig. Another surprising result on Friday saw Vic West blank the Victoria Highlanders 4-0. Vic West goals by Theo Weismiller, Alec Balbo, and Salem Almardy x 2. Earning his first shutout of the year was Keeper Oleksandr Harapa

The biggest shock on Friday was having winless Bays Utd defeat previously undefeated Cowichan 2-1. Bays had goals from Alexander Emery and Robert Eng. The lone marker for Cowichan was from Devin Jack.

Saturday saw Lakehill FC defeat Powell River Villa 4-1. Lakehill had goals from Blair Sturrock, Craig Gorman, and Patrick Nelson with a pair. Villa got on the board early with a goal from Griffin Leach.

Saturday wrapped up with a game at Vanier turf that saw Comox Valley shutout Westcastle Lakers 1-0. Comox goal was from Nick Marinus. Earning his first shutout of the year was Justin Black. Lakehill has the undefeated look, is currently in 1st place, and some are believing they will run away with the division. The next spot is up for grabs as 3 teams are battling - all with 6 points. Everything after that has a lot of teams whose early season fate could be so much different.
