Editor’s Report Well What a busy time its been. Ride outs meetings and camping weekends. I have meet lots of members since the last issue and it’s been a pleasure to meet you all. I am glad to say you have been tapping away on your keyboards and your work is proudly displayed here in your Hustler. I have kept with the same paper as last issue partly due to costs but mainly due the positive response’s I have had as its more reader friendly. The meeting reports are quite cut down again due to space and therefore costs. Half an hour with.....An Inazuma After looking at the Inazuma 250 at the shows we thought it was about time for a test ride. One quick telephone call later a test ride was booked the next Saturday. At first glance the not so little Inazuma looks like a baby Bking with its moulded indicators and robot shaped headlight, throwing my leg over the 780mm high seat allowed full foot contact for my 5ft 7� frame and a comfortable upright riding position. All controls are well placed and the analogue rev counter and digital speedo complete with gear indicator easy to read. Pressing the starter gives a quiet buzzing from the parallel twin into first gear and then away. The ensuing ride showed a capable gutsy town / commuter that is very easy to handle, with the usual very slick Suzuki gear change. The ride is comfortable and light with good road feel and corner confidence. It is not a tourer or race rep so don't expect high speeds or miles and miles in the overtaking lane on the motorway. What you do get for your £3408 is a motorcycle that has real road presence proved by the nods from passing bikers, that will get you to and from work at up to 85mpg giving you whopping 249 miles from the 13 litre tank. From The Chair I do hope that all members that are able to, are out on their bikes enjoying the summer now its finally here. You lucky people. It was nice to meet the north east centre members in late may when we held the NC meeting at their camping weekend. What a friendly centre they are and Kev Close with his team work tirelessly to make sure everybody is made to feel welcome and are enjoying themselves. It was also nice to meet members from the Cumbria centre who travelled over for the nc meeting. What a great turnout for the SOC 40th at The Brownlow Arms, High Marnham on 2nd to 4th August and a great time had by all. Old and new members attended. This was a new venue for the club as a rally and the feedback is really positive as it is relatively central as to location, food was good, everybody catered for and safe for the children. I must thank a few people for making the 40th a success. Pete & Jonathan Dibble for working tirelessly with all the show equipment. Many members and NC that helped assemble & disassemble the kit and generally helping to make the event. Lainy Constable for the overall organising of the event. Alex Maniurka for recommending the band, organising the rideout & signposting of the event. Finally, thanks to all those members & guests who attended. Safe Biking. Anthony Averns ( Bandit Ant) Les Bensley. Last year at the 2012 AGM, Les did announce that he would be not re-standing as treasurer for the club in 2013. Les had been the club treasurer since 2007 but his involvement as part of the running of the club as an NC member stretches way far back than that, nineteen years in total. Les became a member in 1992 & his NC involvement started as shows south co-ordinator back in 1994 until 2007. He started with his paste table & banner at the shows and he soon progressed to winning awards at various shows as best club around during that period. Les had life membership bestowed on him at the 2007 AGM. The club would like to thank Les for his hard work and endeavour during his long time as an NC member and wish him all the best for the future.

Shows Report Summer is all but over, yet still the shows must go on. We must thank the retiring shows Officer Ieaun Bevan for all his hard work and commitment in promoting your club. Treasurer’s Report Hello to everyone in this Great Club. So here's a quick rundown of who I am. My name is John Carr. Some of you know me some don't but I'm hoping to change that, with the 'NC on tour'. I Joined the club back in 2006 (Feb) and the first trip was Brugge in Belgium after that I was hooked so I've been on quite a few trips by now, I took over the Tech Officers role in February this year after the EGM and I hope I'm doing a good job.I decided to go for the Treasurers role as Les was stepping down after 19 years on the NC and I would like to thank him for all the work he has done over the years. I am a Senior Site Manager with a very high class Building Company in Central London, I deal with the refurbishment of properties that have budgets ranging from half a million up to 2 million pounds, part of my job is to ensure the work is done one on time and within budget so I will be bringing some, hopefully, new ideas to the way we budget in the SOC. As most of you know the monies we have at the moment is not that great and I would like to say a Great Big Thank You to Avenue Pest Control for their generous offer to sponsor the Club Stand at this year's NEC. Let's hope we can go from strength to strength and build the club back to what it was a few years ago. Regalia Dear All As most people have said before and will continue to say on here, just where did the time go from the last issue. Due to circumstances beyond our control unfortunately the shop has not progressed forward as fast as we would have hoped because of other events going on within the club that has taken time to sort. I am hopeful that we will soon be in a position to put things behind us and once more channel our energies into more productive avenues within the club. One bit of good news is that the 40th Logo has been chosen and here it is. I hope you agree its a good design and represents the club well. The person who designed it is Phill, non other from Useitright designs and a good job he did too. We will be talking to Trisha very soon to get ideas and products made up with the logo on. Public Relations Not a great deal to report for this addition, I have spent a few weeks incapacitated having broken my leg, after slipping and dislocating my ankle. I am pleased to report I am well on the mend and will be back to speed in the very near future. I am continuing to send events lists out to the various motorcycle publications, we have again featured in the Motorcycle Monthly paper, and I am currently writing a piece for the BMF Rider Magazine. Again, I ask if you have a local bike publication in your location please send me the details and I will ensure your centre events are listed accordingly. Events Officer The weeks seem to keep on flying by and we are now well beyond the longest day and the nights are getting shorter. Hopefully you have all managed to get out and about to at least one club event this summer. They are a great opportunity to get out on our bikes and do what members of this club do best - meet up with friends from across the country for either a ride out or a longer camping weekend. Since the last issue of Hustler there have been a number of really well attended club events around the country including camping weekends in the North East, North West and most recently with the London Massive in Oxfordshire. The club stand has been at a number of events during the summer including Margate Meltdown, BMF Show, Suzuki Day at the Ace CafÊ and 2 shows at Billing Aquadrome. The big one for 2013 was the Invader Rally which took place over the first weekend in August and was a well attended event with old and new members coming along for the weekend. On a practical note can I ask that anyone who is organising a ride out gives as much advance notice as possible in order to ensure it is posted in Hustler and on the website. Can you please send all details to socevents@rocketmail.com Once received the information is forwarded to the Public Relations Officer who promotes events in the national press and with the major riders organisations. Many publications are prepared well in advance so as soon as you plan something, pass on the information in order that the PRO can help promote it for you. At the moment the Diary of Events on the club website is still not working as well as I would like, however it is possible to view full details of all future events. These are also included in all issues of Hustler so members of the club who do not have regular access to the website are still able to find out what’s happening and come along to join us. The events information on the website can be accessed by anyone and not just members. Therefore anyone thinking about joining SOC can see where we are meeting and hopefully come along and find out what we are all about. On a personal note, it has been good to get out and meet up with club members at ride outs, shows and camping weekends during the year. For me that is what being in the club is all about - the friendships you make along the way. I stood for the role of Events Officer at the EGM in February and was re-elected at the AGM in August. I sincerely hope that as the club starts to move forward we will be able to see more events being organised and maybe a few new centres emerge in areas where there is currently no representation. Viva La Espana
The journey started from junction 36 of the M1 motorway at 6:30am on the 16th June 2013 in total 16 like minded bikes were to start the adventure, 8 from Barnsley, 5 from Rotherham and 1 from chesterfield. So of we go down the M1 meeting the others along the way of to sunny Plymouth and the ferry to Santander for the over night sailing, oh what a joy. Stopping to refuel our bellies and petrol tanks off we go again only another 200 miles someone shouts. Numb bums and all we eventually arrive at a well known super market in Plymouth last fuel stop before the ferry. Passports in hand off we go, all stop passport checked, allowed to carry on again. Park in line 8 some young lady shouts in a very fetching uniform. Waiting again but not for long, car n caravans, motorhomes, trucks n tailers and about 400 motorbikes all heading for sunnier climes. Helmets off a chance to take a few pictures, row 8 we hear somebody shout we’re of into the bowels of the ferry, directed by the men in the ferry we leave our prized possessions. Of to find a bunk bed I trek following the others in the Tineo TT party, up these stairs down this alley, we find a lift what floor I ask? floor 8 is the reply with a laugh. Oh to my relief its not just a bed but a suite the commodore suites to be exact. Oh the faces of the other ferry passengers when the wraggy lads turn up at the reception desk. With a splash n a gurgle we are off to Santander. Let the party begin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Viva La Espana We are out in the open sea and things are not well, I have to go and lay down. Oh dear oh dear how many hours on this ferry I ask. Its now a new day and still a bit damp but we are in Spain. Oh what joy to be off the ferry. Right keep it tight lads were off to Tineo only about 200 miles to go.First stop San Vicente for food then onto Panes-Cangas de Onis and Oviedo and finally, The hotel Palacio de Meras in Tineo. Off to the bar for food and beer`s time to start the party. Tuesday arrives time for a ride out only a short one 250 miles ish they cried we’re of to Navia Corrales on the FR 3 we travelled through Pola, Grands de Saline and Serandinas. Wednesday we travelled to Los Barrios de Luna Yacht Club passing through Cangas del narcea, Cabrillianes and Mirantes. Thursday day off. Friday oh dear we went on a little trip to Franca 25 miles just inside the suggested Portugal border 500 miles round trip. Saturday there was a bike show that we attended and several bars that we frequented. Sunday a little ride out to a small slate mine this is the worlds largest slate mine. It was suggested that the county of south Yorkshire could be put into the hole in the ground. Monday the holiday comes to an end so a gentle ride back to Santander via Cangas de Onis, Riano and Potes. Just a few pics of the stunning beauty of the places we went to. Total miles covered 2,200. Hope you enjoy the write up and enjoy the photos if your ever thinking about touring in Spain consider Tineo in the Principality of Asturias, It is situated on a small tributary of the Narcea River. It is the second-largest municipality in Asturias but bear in mind there is not much English spoken so it would be well advised to have a basic knowledge of the Spanish language. The South Coast centre are continuing to meet at Loomies the first Sunday of every month 10am-12pm with a fantastic stream of people coming on down to enjoy the roads and the south coast welcome. With new members finding us out all the time. I hope you are all feeling the warm welcome. Our Thanks go to Sean for running the May centre meet for us while we were away. Now, on to the organised ride outs March ride out saw Alan h, Aaron and myself braved the very cold weather and snow in places for the Annual Pioneer Run, the 75th anniversary.(I think a touch cold for those with more sense). Leaving nice and early to ensure we arrived at the Chalet in time only to find that unfortunately the weather had forced the event to be called off due the the pre 1915 veteran motorcycles requiring much more tendering whilst on the move it was a safety risk. Still a nice hot breakfast inside us and the sun starting to poke its head out we decided a dash home in the straightest line possible was for the best. God bless heated grips. April's ride out to Avebury stone circle was great. The weather shone through and over a dozen members came to meet up wander round the stones and enjoy a bit of lunch. A lovely ride out on the A roads to and from Avebury. A great day out. May saw us ride to West Bay in Dorset for fish and chips. It did rain most of our way down there but thankfully had a much better ride back. A nice portion of fish and chips to warm us up and a wander round the motorcycle shop before we headed off. June saw us put on a ride out every weekend. Sammy Millers motorcycle museum in the new forest for a wander around the history of motorcycling this small but packed museum is perfectly placed in the small country roads of the new forest for a group ride out. A ride to Goodwood aerodrome cafe for an American fly in and a watch of the track being used for club sprint racing a close up look at the race cars and chat with the drivers. The best vehicle of the day was a Ford Anglia with 170 bhp. We rode on up to Suzuki Sunday at the ace cafe saw us leave from Loomies and ride up together to meet the club with the stand and bikes on display. August we went to the county renowned Popham mega meet, attracting thousands of people to the auto jumble and motorcycle display show. Other events organised by other centres that the south coast have been to over the last few months. The Suzuki owners club annual Belgium Easter trip set at the end of march for the bank holiday weekend and the weather having not changed much, a chilly ride lay ahead. We arranged for any south coasters that wanted to travel together to meet up at services along the way.

By lunch we were in France and by tea we were in Belgium, enjoying a hot supper and some of Belgium's finest. With members from many centres there it was a great long weekend together. Want to go next Easter? Check out the details on the boards. ( and on page 51) North east camping weekend. It was a 7 hour ride up from the south coast to Durham in intermittent rain, but the welcome, the ride outs, the entertainment and the people were amazing. With keen members to take us on ride outs and the mystery treasure hunt organised for Sunday the weekend could not have been organised better. I personally had the best time and could not say thank you enough to those hosting the weekend. We rode back with Ken from the London centre in the sunshine. 40th Suzuki owners club birthday bash. Well What can I say... in my opinion, an absolutely fabulous weekend. A great welcome, evening disco and chatting with club members that I have never met as if they were friends. A great band and ride out. All round another great weekend A BIG THANK YOU to all the centres for the events that you have put on that we and indeed any member can join in with. If you are from the south coast and you have missed out on these events, never mind there is always another event coming up. With the centre meet always at Loomies 1st Sunday every month. August bank holiday London camping weekend and Brighton burn up on the horizon, there is still time to get on your bikes. North East Centre North East Centre Camping Weekend The forecast looked great for the weekend but Friday morning was wet and windy. My fears for the weekend looked like they were coming true, who wants to camp in the wet. However Friday evening was a different story. The sun was beating down and it was again looking good. I ventured over to the Heather Lad, our monthly meeting point and camping weekend venue for the weekend and I was really pleased to see happy campers setting up from all points of the compass. We had our resident karioke King Steve Goth at the helm and he did his usual magic and got the weekend off to grand start. I had booked a young lady called Ellie who has never really sung in public before to do a few numbers on the Friday night, her family came along to give moral support and they were very proud of her and see did two sets and went down a storm with the audience. Saturday dawned and Joe Close took a group of riders over to Tan Hill and the Teesdale fells for a run out. The weather was far too good to be sitting around the camping field all day. Saturday night was party night and we had a group called" Butterknowle Jam". A local group of musicians who performed hits from the 50s 60s and 70s. again maybe not to everyone taste but the function room was bouncing by 10.30pm and everyone enjoyed themselves. Also on the Saturday we had the band judging a bike competition and the best Suzuki went to John Hall's GSXR750 ( Tango) and the best non Suzuki went to Ian Wilsons Repsol Fireblade. Well done to those two guys but I really think the judges had a thing for orange. I found my tent by about 3am and I'm certain I could see the sun coming up. Its been a long time since I was that late to bed. Sunday was the official ride out day and I'd organised a mystery treasure hunt style event with clues to solve and destinations to find. Three teams set out at 15 minute intervals heading over to Bishop Auckland, Barnard castle , Middlteton in Teesdale. Stanhope and Durham City. Although they all set out at different times they all came back together, not really what I expected but it didn’t matter. The team that was nearest to my mileage were presented with a " silver" cup. they were Alan, Laura, Trevor, John and Ian, A very good effort by all those that took part. Sunday evening was " Suzukioke " night again with Steve Goth and everyone who could sing and many who couldn't all had a go on the microphone. I was totally exhausted by late evening and headed home elated by the whole weekend. I would like to thank all the people who came from far and wide to support the event but most of all I would like to thank all of the North East centre members and the landlady and staff of the Heather Lad who made the weekend such a success. Agm Report 4th August 2013 Minutes of the 40th Annual General Meeting of the Suzuki Owners Club Meeting started 11.00. Opening remarks The 40th Annual General Meeting of the Suzuki Owners Club was opened by Peter Mead, SOC President. Peter welcomed the members to the AGM and started the proceedings. Chairman's report – Anthony Averns I would like to thank you all for attending the SOC AGM. I would personally like to thank all the present NC members that have been putting in a lot of effort since the EGM in February. I would also like to thank you, the members for your support for the club. February 23rd, just over 5 months ago, what has been achieved with the club so far. New website and forum up and running. The website though it is a means of communication for members and adds another social element to the club. The website will be used to attract new members and also used as a revenue raiser for the club through advertisers etc. Non beneficial advertising has now ceased. With Sagepay closed and going to free banking and the lower costs of the new website & hosting the club now has. That is £2k approx saved to start with, and a deal with a clothing company that will supply SOC clothing etc but we carry no stock. Positive meetings with Suzuki GB have been held with the aim of improving our relationship with them now we have something to offer them. National Secretary's report – Sue Carr Since the EGM, 5 months ago kicking off with the new website and forum. The membership database has nearly finished being incorporated into the website. We made the decision to take the NC 'on tour' and visit centres to hold the NC meetings. it has been a great experience for the NC and the members have had more opportunity to attend and have input into the club. During this time we have ensured that the details held by the DVLA for dating certificates have been updated and since mid April there have been 8 certificates for non members and 16 for members.

Treasurers Report - Les Bensley Once again the club spent over £5k more than we raised, with only £7k in the bank at the 31st March 2013. The Hustler, postage and fuel has been the main outlay. As of the 31st July 2013 the club stands at £6680.46 plus the PayPal account. I would like to mention that the Rainbow fund so far is £1132.89 plus £185 raised from the raffle last night and collecting tins yet to be emptied. After 15 years as an NC member it is time for me to stand down, I would like to kindly thank Lainy for helping me put the accounts together. Accounts breakdown on separate sheet at end of minutes. Memberships Secretary's report – Keith Ferris Hello everybody, I took over this role in February so I will report on what has happened since then, we have had 65 renewals, 18 of which are joint memberships and 7 are 3 year subscriptions and 65 new members, 6 joint, 2 taking up 3 year subscriptions and 2 international. Total members are as follows: 2013 Complimentary – 6 Life members – 40 Individual members – 612 Joint members – 328 International members – 8 Forum members - 15 Editors report- Alan Hancock I hope you all found the last Hustler informative and maybe even entertaining. My biggest problem is the lack of content from the centres. We have been approached by another printer who via their quotes confirm that Cambrian are still our best bet. The Hustler is your magazine, let's get the most from it. Events Officers Report - Lainy Constable In total 310 people took part in at least 1 event during the year and there were 120 events went on. In total members rode over 86.500 miles I would like to make a special mention to the North East Centre out of all the people that went out, of the 310 people you guys had 48 so you were a big proportion of that.

Club charity for 2013/14 Members were asked for nominations for this years Club Charity, the nominations were as follows: Make a wish. 4 votes. Blood bikes. 19 votes Diabetes UK. 11 votes. Walking with the wounded. 5 votes. This year's charity is National Association of Blood Bikes. South/North shows – proposal to make this a shows team The proposal is to combine the shows roles. To have a single Shows co-ordinator with members/centres around the country undertaking /assisting at shows. With members help we can create a 'shows team' and hopefully attend more shows throughout the year. Members/Centres wishing to help or have ideas for shows please contact Alby White. Alby White was nominated by Sue Carr and seconded by Elaine Constable as Shows Co-ordinator. Membership Fee increase The initial vote for £5 was voted for unanimously. Membership fees to increase by £5 across the board from April 2014. 3 year memberships also to increase on a pro rata basis. AT System – Elaine Constable AT Centre Trophy proposed to be reinstated by Kev Close. Motion voted for and carried. AT system to be kept using the rules of 2011/2012 Possible restructure of the centres - proposal by NC written by Alan Hancock Proposal was put forward to explore the feasability to restructure the current centres. The proposal was agreed to be taken forward. National Rally – proposed by Lee Walton This proposal to be investigated.

Centre Closures The matter of centre closures was discussed with reference to the closure of the Central Shires Centre, regarding the manner in which it was closed and the ramifications in respect to the centre funds either in cash or investments. A proposal was made to speak with the clubs PLI legal team to investigate the feasibility of recouping said funds. This proposal was passed. After the AGM the proposal was investigated. With the information learned we believe that it is neither feasible or practical to pursue this matter on a club level. Any SOC member that still has a financial interest in the now closed centre can pursue it on a personal level if they so wish. This now concludes all issues and liabilities pertaining to the SOC centre formerly known as Central Shires. The Chairman closed the meeting President Closing Speech – Peter Mead . Biling Show Report The weekend of the 29 - 30th June and yet again the shows team headed of to a new venue in what could only be described as typical British Weather, but not being put of we arrived and set-up the club stand in the club enclosure at the Biker Bash. We where assisted by Alby and his friends from the East Mids Centre, for what was to prove to be an extremely enjoyable weekend. We where able to set-up between showers, but we awoke to broken clouds on Saturday morning followed by extended period of sunshine, with Sunday being an absolutely outstanding day both weather wise and for activities to be undertaken to promote the SOC. We had many visitors over the weekend both existing and old members, 2 of which we persuaded to rejoin. Again a number of items or merchandise where sold. Big thanks go to the East Mids team for all their hard work over the weekend, but also to the London Centre again for all there hard work and peddling!!!!

Cumbria Camping Weekend at Foxfield The beauty of these events is it gets people from around the country to meet up sample local ales and often be shown or told a good road to ride or scenic rides even. This event was no different with riders traveling from the south coast and North of the border, Scotland I think they call it my drinking pal Peter Geddes. Due to other commitments (Children etc) and Vic Dunkely not having a bike which has changed as of last week, I offered to lead a rideout under Vic's directions over Wrynose pass, turn right out of the carpark, ride to some traffic lights and turn right and then straight on, with Gill Jones who screams when you overtake her on a single track road Ken sole that rode up from London, not bad for a young 74year old, Dave Wilkinson, Lainy and Martin Crawford joined us later and gave me the wrong directions at the end of the lane however it did get Lainy to mutter some very strong words as we eventually got back on the right route through Ambleside and up to Keswick for fuel. Keswick reminded me of my youth ( I have a picture if no one believes me lol) and a viewing point I used to visit a mile or so higher up than Ashness Bridge, try and get there if your up that way but be careful as there is an awfull lot of gravel on a single track road that made Ken do a dance of his bike and after only 3 beta blockers and a few deep breaths he was back on the bike (I made up the Beta blockers but it adds a bit of artistic licence lol) with a broken brake lever baubble and a replacement scratch on his crash bars, Martin Crawford gave him a replacement lever and then a sedate ride down to Foxfields for more specialty pasties. To catch up with Gordon Orr and Dave Elms that often seem to get an Invisible rope tying them to the bar at these events actually Dave is just an apprentice compared with Gordon who has Jan to get him back to the tent. We were promised entertainment for the Saturday night which did not meet the expectations of all and retired to the garden area where under the supervision of Dave the fireman who was also the comedian for the night we lit a Chimera in the hope we could make a meal of the midges, we did at one point worry about the singers voice as we smoked out the bar. I still reckon the midges were winning. To those I have mentioned see you next time To those I haven't buy me a beer next time and I might remember you. East Midlands Centre June 29/ 30th: The East Mids Centre had a “Suzuki Owners Club & friends” stand alongside the main club stand at the Billing Biker Bash. We gave out info out on different bike events in our region. A lot of people took membership forms away and some of our “friends”, who were ex-members, re-joined before the weekend was over. We had bikes on the stand thanks to Matt, Ken, Steve, John & Caroline, and Alan. This was Alan’s first time camping and he really enjoyed it, we ate like Lords, Full English breakfast and homemade chips for tea, all done on a BBQ. Lainy put her bike on the SOC stand with Ieuan’s bike. We had a visit from Wrathchild who were playing on Saturday night. Gaz (lead singer) came over to chat with us. July 19/20th We were back at Billing for another show this one was the Billing Bike Fest, again we were at the side of the main SOC stand. Another good week-end out, plenty ofpeople taking membership forms about the club, and all the I nfo we had, including bike safety DVD’s. I had the East Mids stand in my van, so my mate Rick took my bike down to the show in his van. We put a skeleton on my bike for a bit of fun. Rick brought his Intruder. He is doing up his bike at the moment. It looks very good now but it will be brill when he has it finished it. Loads of people were attracted to Pete’s little bike and we raised a lot for Rainbows with donations from parents of children who had their photo taken sitting on it. July 28th We took the centre stand to B&B Motorcycle Dealership in Lincoln for their Classic Japanese Bike Show, Thanks again to Matt for taking his bike, and to Ken & Sue Read and Lainy for making the effort to come and help out. We met up with Mick Grant and had a great day seeing all the old classic bikes. Thanks to B&B motorcycles for letting us put a stand. Hope to be there again next year. August 4th: Invader and AGM. What a brill time, fun just like the old days. Thanks to Garry for my soaking, & to Sheila for my snog, I just had to check her tonsils LOL. If you weren’t there, you missed a brilliant time. It was nice to meet some of the new members that I had not seen before, they were as mad as me. Lorna, your time will come my lady, your phone saved you. It was also nice to see some of the old members who were in the club years ago like Mark Seager, Simon & Wendy and Dave & Jo from West Mids, along with Mick Moxon & Karen and Rob & Helen Stanley from the old Lincs Centre.

Bit of rain Saturday, but the rideout went ahead as planned. I got here later so I did not go out on it, & had already done some miles so it was beer o'clock for me. We had a great time Saturday night with Lisa who sang. It was nice to see Sheila & Bob who I met almost 10/15 years ago at Morton Pinkney. On Sunday we all went out to Windsor Castle & had a good time there with a nice walk round. Well done to Keith Ferris for getting us a prime secure parking space at the coach park. When we went back it was beer o'clock again. Thanks to the London Centre for a great week end.

T500 refurb (its not f*****g pink) It all started one evening, after a few ciders, scanning the bikes on eBay I came across an absolute bargain, Suzuki T500,only £300,1 bid,5 days left, it was a 1971 titan,17347 miles USA import with matching frame and engine numbers, CANDY LAVENDER in colour ??? Good chrome and no major parts missing-so I thought I would place a cheeky bid to see how it would go-£350 bid, confirmed—its mine, and that’s how it stayed for the 5 days. With one hour left someone placed a higher bid on my bike, 26 bids later I was now the owner of a classic Suzuki and £1550 poorer. The day I collected her the seller said he had 19 T500 he would be selling, he was going to start a classic twins racing team but the class had been abandoned and his wife had given him some kind of ultimatum , don’t understand why (ha ha ha) The bike was so good I decided not to totally strip it down and restore it as first intended , the odd scratch just added to its character, I want it to look like a nice old motorbike, not a brand new 41 year old bike if you can understand that.
As soon as the bike was off the van, we rigged up some fish tank air hose to the carbs, chucked some petrol in the tank, checked the engine oil and two stroke, connected the battery and kicked like buggery-lots of popping and banging and a whole tin of easy start later it was decided she needed checking over more thoroughly, so into the garage and off came the seat, tank, air box, carbs and a list was made of all the parts that needed replacing. All the cables needed replacing, HT caps, spark plugs, air box rubber, air filter, petrol and vacuum hose, front and rear brake shoes, seat cover, grab rail, indicators and the clutch side engine casing which was cracked. Discount bike spares and Wemoto had most of the parts in stock The carbs were stripped and cleaned and the float height re-set, BIG mistake, re-fitted the carbs and all the new parts including a second hand HT coil as only one sparkplug was sparking, cleaned the petrol tank and new petrol jobs a good un, turn the key, kick, kick, kick, bang, still won’t run, the plugs were soaking with petrol, there was a really good spark on both plugs, so too much fuel, took the carbs off again and re-set the float height again, back together, still no go, what the f***, back to basicschecked the points, OK, plug gap, OK, good spark, missing something here because it just will not start. With both plugs out and connected to the HT caps, a small screwdriver was placed down the right side plug hole and slowly turned the engine over until it reached T.D.C (top dead centre) and a set of points had closed, so the timing was pretty close,

using another screwdriver the points were flicked open, guess what.....The LEFT hand plug sparked, the leads had got swapped, all back together and she started first kick. On her first run around the cul-de-sac, it would not pull and stank of petrol, so carbs of again and re-set the float height, but this time I measured the float height after removing the gaskets from the bottom of the carburettor bodies, ordered two carb re-furb kits and re-fitted the carbs a week later…..hey presto it now runs and pulls like a train (Smokey). So to the first part of getting an imported bike registered- an M.O.T, it passed no problem using the frame and engine numbers for identification, the M.O.T tester said he had put the colour as purple and white as the D.V.L.A data base didn’t have PINK as a colour option, the age related certificate arrived from the Suzuki owners club verifying it was a 1971 t500 titan. Insured and with my V55/5 filled in it was off to the D.V.L.A in Birmingham, I paid my £55 to the man and was told I would hear from them in a few days….two weeks later I was told to take the bike for inspection. On the day of inspection the inspector checked frame and engine numbers and his only comment was he thought the PINK paint job was good quality. Two days later J442 was reborn, a classic black and silver number plate was bolted to the backend and her maiden run was to work on Monday morning, my workmates came out to have a look and there first comments were why have you painted it PINK?........to which my reply was … ts not f*****g pink, its Candy lavender red. During the first few days of road use it smoked more than a Dutch Coffee shop so the crank seals need replacing, that is about to be done….during this story I purchased another t500 for parts but decided it was too good for parts so I am starting all over again with this one, only it will be painted BLACK….watch this place. The Haynes Workshop Manual is surely one the most easily recognisable books ever printed, we have all bought them and have used them over and over again. As I gaze at my bookshelf I have 5 spines staring at me reassuring me that they will plug the gaps in my mechanical knowledge, the slightly oily thumb prints on the page edges standing testament to their usage. The whole ethos of the Haynes Publishing Group was built around the enthusiasm of one man for cars, motoring and business. It was this life-long passion that turned John Haynes into a collector, not just of fine cars, but also of the books, photographs and memorabilia that surrounded them. The natural ambition for any collector is to start their own museum and in a way this was almost forced upon John, as he began to run out of suitable storage for his increasing number of Rolls Royces, Jaguars, Bentleys and Lagondas to name just a few. The search then began for a suitable building. It was a stroke of luck that around this time the old Charles Franks Joinery buildings at the sawmills in Sparkford came on the market, complete with the derelict remains of what used to be a Second World War ammunition dump built by the Americans. It was just a half-mile from the Publishing Group headquarters and within sight of the proposed sparkford by-pass on the main West Country holiday route, the A303. There was now the perfect opportunity to put a little back for fellow enthusiasts by giving the collection independent charitable trust status and ensuring its permanence as a nationally owned collection that could not be split up. Haynes International Motor Museum unveiled the first phase of its extensive £4.2 million redevelopment this spring. The redevelopment, which includes new display halls, café, shop and state of the art conferencing and banqueting suites, will provide a completely new façade to the museum, and is due to be fully completed in Spring 2014. The development has been privately funded by the Museum. The founder and Chairman John H Haynes OBE, opened the museum with just 33 cars, housed in one hall, back in July 1985. Phase one, includes the opening of the new exhibition areas, nicknamed ‘The Black Box’ due to its exterior. The Black Box, a huge two-storey display area, overlooks the Haynes’ test track and is divided into two areas.

The Vroom Room, spanning over 360 square metres and accommodating around 20 cars at any one time, it is dedicated to the very best in high powered, high performance sports cars through the ages, while the Motorcycle Mezzanine, at 330 square metres, will create a permanent home for the museum’s two-wheeled collection of around 70 motorbikes which includes Motorcycles from around the World and the Forshaw Speedway Collection, the World’s largest and most complete Speedway display. This is not your normal stuffy museum as they have a fully fitted modern workshop who specialise in Jaguar and Land Rovers of any age, while you are waiting maybe a cup of tea and slice of cake in the Café or you could even get married as the museum holds a civil wedding licence. The Museum is open 361 days a year and your BMCT membership is acceptable. LEGALITIES WITH JOHN MEASURES No Win- No Fee....or is it? Firstly, can I advise that I have left Barratts, so please dispose of the old cards and leaflets. Barratts are not passing messages on. So why the change and what has that to do with the topic of this article? I have previously advised of the changes that the government has brought in from 1st April. The two main changes that affect you are:1. There is a fast-track RTA process for admitted claims where the amount of the claim is under £10,000. For this purpose, the value of the claim is based on the level of general damages (injury) and special damages (financial loss), excluding damage to the vehicle and hire costs. Solicitors used to receive fixed costs of £1,200 for dealing with these claims. Following the changes on 1st April, fixed costs have been reduced to £500. After the end of July, the financial limits of the RTA process have also been extended and claims between £10,000 and £25,000 will attract fixed costs of £800. 2. Prior to the 1st April, if solicitors acted under a no win – no fee agreement (conditional fee agreement), to reflect the risk that they may receive no costs at all on lost cases, they could claim an additional 12.5% uplift on their costs which was paid by the negligent drivers’ insurer on top of their basic costs. This was called a Success Fee and was supposed to balance their costs on cases that were won against those that were lost. After the 1st April, solicitors are no longer able to recover this uplift against the insurer but now, the solicitor can take up to 25% of their client’s compensation award. There are numerous other changes but I will concentrate just on these two. So how does this affect the injured biker? To maximise profit margins, legal firms do not usually have solicitors dealing with cases that fall within the fixed costs regime. These cases are usually handled by non-qualified staff that are in house trained and work with computerised case management systems. Now the limits have been raised to £25,000, this will have a knock on effect, affecting more injured clients. Now I accept that there are some very good non-qualified claims handlers doing an excellent job but they are under a lot of pressure to resolve the claim as quickly as possible working under strict Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). This de-skilling of legal profession has become more common with the introduction of Alternative Business Structures who are companies jockeying for a slice of the personal injury market.

Have you noticed the subtle difference in the way personal injury is now advertised? You still see the No - Win- No Fee but no longer or very infrequently see the comment that the client received 100% of their compensation. This is because the legal representative is taking up to 25% of the compensation. The double whammy is that it will become an industry standard to use non-qualified staff for the fixed costs cases (under £25,000) but also the likelihood that the client will lose a large chunk of their compensation to “buy into the litigation process”. So where does this leave the injured biker, up the creek without a paddle? Perhaps not. If the claim exceeds £25,000 you are more likely to be represented by a solicitor but this is not guaranteed. If the claim is under £25,000 before signing anything, check who will be handling the claim on your behalf and if they are deducting anything from your compensation if you are successful. The reason I left Barratts was that I wanted to continue to offer my clients a high level of service provided by a qualified solicitor, whether their claim was worth £1 or £1m+. Also, I did not want to deduct a success fee from the compensation award. I was also keen to ensure that I had the backing of an established national firm of solicitors that would allow me to work under these terms. I joined Scott-Moncrieff, whose senior partner is Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, the President of the Law Society. This firm has a number of consultants and has a rigorous application process to ensure their consultants are of the highest legal standard. The firm provides admin and other support for their consultants. It also provides a forum for their lawyers to discuss legal issues. It is my belief that my clients are treated as individuals and not as a commodity of profit. I also specialise in all aspects of personal injury law and am happy to take instructions on other types of PI claims. They are are both suffering from memberships and affiliations dropping off, loss of income from shows etc. Welfare rights: I know that Bridget is still experiencing a lot of issues following the break she suffered last year . Sadly Flush’s wife Bunny Past away and we send our condolences. Anthony (AA)attended the funeral. Flush would like us to consider some sort of a trophy in Bunny's name. A discussion followed regarding the merits of a trophy SC: Should this be minuted and the members asked for their idea's that could then be taken back to Flush for him to choose as appropriate. National Committee Meeting held on 25th May 2013. Events Secretary Report I am not receiving many details of events from centre secs, all that are received are put on the website. The AT database is currently on an excel spreadsheet. I received an email form Andy Bevan informing me that he will now not be providing the karioke for the Friday evening at the AGM. Following discussion it was felt that background music would be preferable. Ride outs are planned for the Invader weekend. Action: Lainy to check with venue regarding performing rights license. Public Relations Officer Report Part of my role is to get the club publicised and, the same as with Lainy, I am having difficulties getting information regarding ride outs. We have listings in Motorcycle monthly, I am also putting together an article for BMF. Can centre sec's let me know about local tabloid etc so I can contact them and get the club advertised for free. The ride out/event details are required at least 6 weeks in advance to be advertised. Regalia Report At this present moment in time I do not have a lot to report back on other than we continue to work closely with Trisha and Phil from Useitright in developing more items for the shop etc .So far take up has been very slow with the shop. I am aware that we are getting very low on adhesive roundel SOC stickers and I plan to put an order in very soon. I have enclosed some 40th designs that I have already received from Phil of Useitright, and as it stands to date I have received no other designs from the membership. Samples from a company named Sew Embroidery were passed to members to review, the general consensus was that the garments were good quality. Belguim If Lee’s trip to Spain has got your feet itching how about this? Easter in Belgium 2014 Friday 18th April to Monday 21st April There has been an annual trip to Belgium every Easter since 2005. They were first started by Gordon Lawson (Knobbly Wobbly) with a trip to Brugge and have been a favourite since then, they have also been to Blankenburg and Ostende. Next Easter we are off to Kortrijk ( Pronounced Courtray) staying in the Ibis Kortrijk Centrum. Kortrijk is located if the Flemish province of West Flanders on the River Leie, 26 miles southwest of Ghent and 16 miles northeast of Lille in France. The City dates back to Roman times but grew rapidly thanks to wool and flax trading with France and England. Much of the cities medieval architecture remains intact and is remarkably well preserved. The city centre is one of the largest car free areas in Belgium. There are many museums to visit including Kortrijk 1302, the national Flax museum and the Flemish Film Museum and archive. Nowadays a big part of the historical city centre is a complete pedestrian area with a new covered shopping centre. The hotel is 3 stars and close to the city centre and close to the train station and has 82 rooms with air conditioning and free motorcycle parking. Diy Heated Jacket This may be of use to those of you that ride all year round and want a bit more warmth while riding your bike in the colder weather. I managed to make mine for the princely sum of around £40, depending on what you need to purchase this will vary, but will still be cheaper than purchasing a ready made Heated Jacket and will also heat you all over arms, back, front and neck, which none of the others do. First you will need to purchase the following, unless you have them already: Lightweight Fleece – thinner the better, preferably one with full length zip, but pull on type will do, can be purchased for £10 or less from outdoor supplier. Turn the fleece inside out and select your start point for the wiring, left or right side @ front - worth checking which side you intend connecting the fly lead to the bike 1st. It may be easier initially to run the wire around the jacket using pins to hold the cable in place (DO NOT DAMAGE CABLE WITH PIN) as you thread around the jacket to evenly distribute the full 33 feet of wire which needs to finish where you started on the jacket, see diagram(fig 1), the thread pattern may vary slightly depending on size of jacket. Once you have spread the wiring evenly around the whole jacket you will need a needle and cotton to tack the cable in to place around the jacket, I suggest every 100mm at most but that is up to you. When you have threaded and tacked the heating wire in place you then need to connect both ends to the twin power cable by soldering or use of connectors or both and then insulating with shrink wrap or insulation of some kind. Once that has been done you will need to fix the twin power cable firmly to the jacket by means of heavy duty cotton stitching to hem so cannot be pulled out from jacket. As fig 2

You then need enough length of cable to protrude from under your bike gear so as to be able to plug into the on off switch, once this is determined you need to fit male or female plug to end of the cable so can connect to switch. Fig 3 You will need to connect a fly lead from either the battery or a switched 12v supply using the twin power cable making sure you fit the inline 5 amp fuse, this lead needs to be long enough for you to comfortably connect the switch and to be in a convenient position that you can also switch on and off easily while riding. The iron on tape needs fitting over the Heated Cable inside the jacket, all Heated wiring needs covering, a fairly hot iron should be used, as this cable Is designed for heating and will withstand the ironing. This heated jacket should be worn over another garment such as a long sleeved T shirt or thermal type vest for best results. THE HEATED CABLE MUST NOT BE USED NEXT TO THE SKIN, hence iron on tape and base layer. The heated jacket when complete and working draws approximately 4.5 amps.
