S600 2015 MERCEDES-BENZ
CALIFORNIA T
2015 FERRARI
REVEALED
REVEALED
No other car lives up to the standard so famously set up by company founder Gottlieb Daimler quite as comprehensively as the top model from Mercedez-Benz. The Mercedes-Benz S600 with V12 biturbo engine is the top model in the already successfully established S-Class and is available exclusively with long wheelbae and with a luxurious package of equitment and appointments. Its performance data: 390 KW (530 hp) and 830 Nm of torque. The Mercedes-Benz S600 had its world premiere at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, with the market launch to follow in March 2014. But the S-Class is about to get even better in other ways, too: the models in the current range will be upgraded with the addition of a head up display, touchpaf and COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS. “The S-Class has always been the embodiment of our claim to deliver the very best in terms of both techonology and design” emphasised Ola Kälenius, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “And our flagship model, the S600 epitomises the focus of our development work, the ‘Essence of Luxery’, in a way that no other model can. Our customers in North America and Asia in particular will enjoy this new top model with its exciting V12 engine.” With an output of 390 kW (530 hp), the V12 biturbo engine in the Mercedes-Benz S600 packs a bigger punch than its predecessor did with 380 kW (517 hp). The displacement of the engine has increased from 5513 to 5980 cc. The maximum torque of 830 Nm is available 6

from 1900 rpm. The S600 now for the first time features the ECO start/stop funtion as standard, while it also meets the Euro 6 emissions standard. The combined fuel consumption of the S600 stands at 11.1 litres/100 km 0 21 percent lower than that of its predecessors (14.1/100 km). The most important deatures of the engine at a glance: - All-aluminum crankcase - One-piece chain drive - Forged crankshaft in high-grade quenched and tempered steel - Modified forged pistons - New engine control unit -New dedicated ignition coil with twin-spark ignition - Cam follower -Two intake and one outlet valves (three-valve technology) - Hollow-stem outlet valves, filled with sodium - Low-temperature cooling-water circulation with seperate expansion reservior.
The comprehensive standard specification of the Mercedes-Benz S600 reinforeces its role as a flagship model. The LED intellegent Light System, the MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with ROAD SURFACE SCAN and the Driving Assistance package Plus, for example, all come as standard. The later comprises Active Lane Keep Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, BAS PlUS with Cross-Traffic Assist, DISTRONIC PLUS with STEER CONTROL and Stop&Go Pilot, PRE-SAFE ® PLUS.
Legendary top-of-the-range-engine The figure “600” has long been a legend in the history of the automobile: the model 600 (W 100) launched in 1963 was the first passenger car from Mercedes-Benz to feature a V8 injection engine. This same powerful (184 KW/250 hp) and refined engine was used from 1967 on in the W 109 model series (in the top-of the-range 300 SEL 6.3). Further top models to deature a V8 engine included the 450 SEL 6.9 from the model series 116 (210 kW/286 ho) and the 560 SE in the 126 series (220 kW/300 hp in the ECE version). The 600 SE model in the 140 model series of 1991 marked the introduction of the first twelve-cylinder engine as standard in a Mercedes-Benz passanger car. The M 120 delivered 300 kW (408 hp) from a displacement of 6 litres and began a tradition of V12 units as the top-of-the-range engines in the S-Class. Since the 220 series, Mercedes-Benz has also offered especially sporty, AMG-optimised variants with V8 and V12 engines at the top of its S-Class range, in the form of the S 63 AMG and S 65 AMG. From March 2014: additional fine touches in the new S-Class From March 2014, all the functions of the head unit can be controlled by fingertip gesture, as will a smartphone from the new,
optional touchpad. In addition, the touchpad allows letters, numbers, and special characters to be entered in handwritting- in any language that is available on the head unit. The touchpad thus offers an addition, fullfuntion input option and above the exisiting COMMAND Controller and LINGUATRONIC. A head-up display is also available as an option for the S-Class. As in a jet fighter, it displays important information directly in the drivers field of view on the front windscreen, so ensuring that the driver’s attention is distracted less from the road ahead. The system provides information on speed limits and navigation instructions, for example. Replacing COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST on the S-Class now is COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS as standard. In addition to the adaptive Brake Assist system, which helps to protect agasint collisions at speeds of over 7 km/h, this system now features a further function; if the ganger of collision persists and the driver fails to respond, the system is able to carry out autonomous braking at speeds of up to 200 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h and is able to precent rear end collisions at up to 40 km/h. A clear windscreen even at sub-zero temperatures, without all the hassle of scraping, is now possible thanks to electric windscreen heating (optional extra). This is designed to work in conjunction with the air-conditioning blower and ensures clear forward visibility in practically no time at all. Source: Mercedes-Benz Press

Philadelphia is certainly a place to take note of when talking East Coast fashion. And, who better to get a real sense of style from other than the founder of STYLEMANIAC.COM – Doreen Creede. CD: Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background? What are your general professional and non-professional interests? DC: As a girl, I was always scribbling stories, rearranging my room, reading under the covers till dawn and searching for the perfect pair of shoes. Not much has changed! I’ve been lucky to take what I love and make it into a career – first writing for corporations and magazines, then owning a decorating business and starring on HGTV, and now working with an emerging fashion brand. And then there’s my lifestyle blog, Style Maniac, which combines all those passions.
CD: What does fashion mean to you? DC: My Italian grandmother was an incredible seamstress – she created everything from wedding gowns to upholstery to theater costumes -- and my mom and sister both love fashion and have great style. Growing up, fashion was simply part of life. So much that no matter what the occasion I always think of what I’ll be wearing. Even when being interviewed on the radio. CD: How would you define your personal style? DC: Clean lines plus a touch of drama, such as a just shy of gaudy cocktail ring or a lush velvet fringed scarf or a gold snakeskin bag. And I believe that, like black, leopard never goes out of style. I almost always have it on my body somewhere. CD: How long has Style Maniac been in existence? How did you come up with the concept? DC: The Style Maniac blog launched in 2009 as an antidote to the recession, a place where people could come for a sunny dose of beauty and inspiration and I could share my philosophy that as long as you decorate, dress, eat and entertain you may as well do it with style. As I say: use the good china for breakfast, wear cocktail rings at lunch, and eat by candlelight on Tuesday night. Take these ordinary moments of life and make them special. That message has resonated with a great group of women and men and blossomed into a community of friends who share, inspire and support each other; an unexpected development

CD: Who are your influences? DC: My parents. They married young and broke, yet we did eat dinner by candlelight on Tuesday night, Frank Sinatra crooning, in a spotless dining room. My mother is the most gracious hostess and my father has a terrific sense of humor. After 49 years of marriage they are still best friends and have a ton of fun together. A better example I could not ask for. CD: Who are/is your favorite local designers? Big name designer(s)? DC: NINObrand, of course! Four years ago I spied a black cape coat across a crowded room and fell so in love with the line I now work with the brand as VP & Director of Private Sales. Not only are the clothes a perfect fit, but so is our commitment to producing handmade garments in the USA and bringing them to clients in a very personal, enjoyable way. Our collectors often say they’d like to live in our Atelier and why not? It’s a magical place and my only focus when you’re there for a private appointment is to make you feel good and look beautiful. CD: What are some of your favorite brands? DC: LAGOS, Realm and Kenneth Jay Lane jewelry. Esska, Jonathan Fluevog, Poetic Licence, United Nude and Stuart Weitzman shoes. If I’m not wearing that cape coat or our new bubble wool bomber jacket from NINObrand I’m wrapped in shearling from Blue Duck or one of the many vintage coats I’ve collected over the years. CD: Tell us about your writing style... DC: I want you to feel you’re there with me. A blog reader once commented that Style Maniac was “like reading a wonderfully written novel” and I couldn’t dream up a better description. CD: What are the must haves for this holiday season? DC: Lipstick that doesn’t come off on your teeth (still looking for this one); girlfriends to share a festive cocktail (I am thankful for each of you); someone you love building a crackling fire, pouring a glass of velvety wine and making you laugh at the end of a long day as snow falls softly outside (my husband has this one covered). CD: What’s in store for 2015 personally and professionally? DC: Circling back to that young girl scribbling: I’ve written a book sharing my secrets on easy ways to live with style every day, and signed with an agent. Now we just need a publisher…. CD: Your cocktail of choice is… DC: Bourbon on the rocks or an ice cold, slightly dirty Tito’s martini. CD: Exquisite! Thank you Doreen. Cheers. By: Chrstian S. An American Girl in San Juan: The Old Man and the Seagram’s 7
When I first started writing about Puerto Rico, several of my friends and relatives auctioned off advice on how I should begin the process of documenting my life in the Caribbean. “You need to find your voice,” my friend Jenna coached via email. “Find your voice, then you will truly begin to write, like a writer.”
not enough to produce my own great American novel while grasping for a great, Puerto Rican adventure. Whatever cultural significance that was once palpable was undeniably replaced with a culture of Instagraming some asshole giving the middle finger while standing in Plaza Colon.
I didn’t know I wasn’t writing like a writer. I had asked her to critique an essay I’d written about Puerto Rican women and their shoes. Based on her feedback, I was apparently writing like Koko the gorilla.
I had read The Rum Diary, and I assumed that like Hunter S. Thompson, I’d establish a certain niche that would caterto my writing. I initially spent a lot of time in the coffee shop across the street from the Marriott. Wired on caffeine, I’d vigorously type the events of the day as though I were hitting the archaic key presses on a 1920’s typewriter. I felt productive, and I made the little coffee shop an office for my writing, spilling pieces of paper across tables and crunching to meet my figurative deadline. My eyes were glued to my work, and if I had been a smoker, I probably would have had a lit Marlborough tentatively hanging from the corner of my lips while mouthing sentences aloud to hear if they made sense or not.
As a gift, my mother had purchased an iPad for me when I confirmed my move to the island. The geniuses at Apple had the back inscribed with a message that read, “Julia Brown-Farley. Here’s to a Great Adventure!” It was motivational, and I naively toted the iPad around San Juan with the belief that inspiration and technique would strike voluntarily. I visited many of the Puerto Rican landmarks, places like Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Paseo de la Princesa, thinking I would unearth my voice and channel creative serenity from their depths. Once there, however, lost amongst the tourists and the bums, I realized that visual stimulation from these historic structures was simply 12

I was consistent with my writing, which inadvertently sent a message to the surrounding coffee shop dwellers that
suggested I was crafting something of great importance, prompting them to talk to me. One interruption in particular caught me off guard, as I was busy narrowing in on a brilliant description of what an empanadilla tastes like the morning after a night spent drinking mojitos. “What are you working on?” I looked up from my makeshift desk. A man dressed in black was seated directly across from me in a leather wing back chair. His arms were territorially positioned on both armrests, the way a member of the royal family might sit. He wore sunglasses and kept them on while we talked. His voice was fairly soft, and when he spoke, it rose as he enunciated the last word of whatever he was saying. It was with the same inflection one uses when asking a question. “You’re going to love living in Puerto Rico? I wish you well with your writing?” Then, without any kind of invitation to do so, he completely changed the subject. “Have you heard of Reiki? It’s a great tool for finding inspiration?” It was actually a question, and I politely told him no, I wasn’t familiar with it. Rather than use his words to explain what the practice is, he rose from his faux throne and approached me. “Close your eyes?” I assumed it was an instruction, and although he was an absolute stranger, I leaned back in my chair, eyes cemented. I sensed him near my face, and could feel the heat from his hands moving around my cheeks, mouth, temples and ears. It was a strange, tingly sensation. Despite the thermos of espresso I had consumed, I suddenly felt calm and catatonic. All of the “work” related
tension that had accumulated through hours of writing loosened as I slipped into a trance-like state. I didn’t know what the standard time frame was for Reiki from start to completion, but after what felt like 20 minutes, I started to wonder what kind of progress was being made. No doubt I was thoroughly relaxed; my body was slinked back in my chair with my mouth agape, and my arms dangled limply by my side. Just shy of my knuckles grazing the floor, I realized that I was once again feeling not dissimilar to a Silverback. I told myself to at least open one eye and assess how much longer I would be confined to the Reiki. I was stunned to find the man dressed in black had already returned to his leather seat and was paying absolutely no attention to me. He was instead dramatically staring off into the distance, perhaps being called by a higher power through his fifth chakra. Embarrassed, I sat up with both eyes open, wondering how long he had left me there alone and exposed. At least while he had been practicing the Reiki, it was clear to other coffee shop patrons some kind of interaction was taking place between two individuals. Without him as a counterpart, I looked like I had just shot heroin into my bloodstream. I felt myself wanting to be annoyed with him, but the Reiki had me under its spell. I was so subdued, I could barely muster the ability to tell him off. With my neurotransmitters slowly signaling, I formulated a passive thought and directed it towards him: That was rude of you? I decided to abandon the coffee shop and move on to establishments that serve liquor to cultivate my writing. I figured the odd balls of the coffee shop were detrimental

to my growth as a writer, and the alcoholics I was sure to come across in the neighborhood bar would suit my needs much more appropriately. Surely The Rum Diary wasn’t inspired from sitting in a cafe nursing a cup of Yacono dark roast. I told myself that if I was going to live in the footsteps of Hunter S. Thompson and produce my own piece of literature, I needed to explore the island while consuming a margarita, or two. I began to work on The Tequila Chronicles during happy hour at the Mexican restaurant, Tijuana’s. Following many afternoons spent brainstorming on the beach, I would mosey over to their open-air bar around 4:30 with my journal and order a pitcher of margaritas. I considered it “work” because by 7pm I would reach exhaustion and was forced to retire home for the evening. Once there, I’d pass out in my bed, still dressed in my bathing suit with a film of seawater caked on my skin. It became a standard routine for several weeks, and I eventually graduated from a pitcher to a punch bowl sized margarita called La Madre. I started questioning the level of my productivity when the following morning I’d evaluate

what I had created while under the influence of tequila and prolonged sun exposure. In the sobering light of day, the monumental thoughts and passages written in my journal resembled archeological caveman scrawlings. The few sentences I was able to decipher read along the same lines as a bad haiku. Puerto Rico I like it Salt on my rim It was quite possibly the Madre, served with its PVC pipe flexi straw and glowing plastic “ice” cubes that acted as a handicap to my writing, or perhaps I truly just lacked the skill and technique I assumed I’d find while living in Puerto Rico. I wasn’t developing my voice, I was developing a drinking problem that was causing me to slur my words. Truthfully, while I’ve always enjoyed writing, there has also been a sense of indifference on my end towards the literary world. I find some pleasure in reading, but
when forced to commit to a book, I’m often turned off in the very early stages of getting to know the characters and story line. Classics, or what I was led to believe are classics, never appealed to me probably because they appealed to everyone else. So what if my classmates were reading Great Expectations? I thought the title was extremely misleading. Come ninth page, I had great distain for Dickens’ text. It wasn’t just Dickens. It should be noted that I did read The Old Man and the Sea when I was in grade school, and again, I obtained no joy from it. It had absolutely no literary influence on me. If anything, I’d argue it drove me away from literature. I read it while on summer vacation as it was on our list of required reading. I was literally at the sea, at my grandparent’s summer home in New Jersey, and I still found it dull. My mother had confined me to the beach blanket under our umbrella like one of those dogs unable to cross the electroshock invisible fence. The rest of my family were reaping all of the benefits the shore has to offer the normal beach vacationer; swimming, sunbathing, sand castle building and horseshoeing in the sun’s UV rays. I wasn’t permitted to leave the shade until the SPF in my lotion had been fully absorbed into my pale, freckly skin. My mother added insult to injury with the summer reading ordeal, stating I had to read the book, and that I would like it. “Just lay still and you’ll get into it! Imagine you’re Hemingway!” She reprimanded when I whined to her about how boring I thought it was. I was belly down on the blanket and flutter kicking my legs against the hot sand in protest. She had her hands on her hips and was standing directly in front of me, with her bathing suit straps resting snugly around her shoulders. I thought this was an attempt to instill intimidation, but later discovered she was only trying to even out her tan lines. Trying to picture myself as an old man talking to marine life didn’t entice me to appreciate Hemingway’s work. Even with the sound of gulls in the background, the smell
of salty air, and the image of a whale breaching in the distance, I felt myself dragging through the torturous book and became distracted by everything that surrounded me. The whale breaching actually turned out to be an obese New Jersey beachgoer nestled in a chair down by the water’s edge. While I pretended to read to avoid my mother’s rants, I actually watched the overweight woman finish her fudgie wudgie bar and slowly sink into the wet sand, the foamy ocean circling at her swollen feet. “Whale,” I softly mimicked the old man’s delusional narrative. “I love you and respect you very much. But I will kill you dead before this day ends...since you get to eat ice cream and don’t have to read during your summer vacation.” To me, it sounded like the start of a new classic. Even after Puerto Rico when I moved back to Philadelphia, I was constantly leaving my studio in Olde City, with the Apothecary and Ye Olde Liquor Shoppe, and writing in The Race Street Cafe. Race Street felt like the perfect hybrid of coffee shop and neighborhood bar. The name alone had me captivated. Race Street Cafe. It made me think I was the patron of some distinguished establishment. Perhaps by visiting Race Street, I was again attempting to channel my inner Ernest Hemingway, or another one of those great American writers of the 20th century whose books I never read, but whose lifestyles I envied. Oftentimes I’d bring my laptop to the Cafe and would write while polishing off a bottle of wine alone at a rustic, wooden table in the corner by candlelight. On nights when I was feeling truly creative, I’d fashion an ensemble to compliment Race Street’s ambiance; a chunky cable knit sweater, a Greek styled fisherman’s cap, and a chestnut smoking pipe to chew on as I concentrated on my masterpiece. A girl named Jessica once approached me in Race Str eet, while I was reading a paragraph I had just written with the aid of a 2011 Rioja. My hands were steepled in front of my lips as I sat perched on my bar stool.

“Hey. What are you writing?” She was peering over my shoulder and looking at my computer screen. “Oh, um. Just...essays. I’m writing essays about Puerto Rico. I lived there for a year.”
“Really?” I thought she looked way too pretty to be a writer.
Actually, I didn’t agree with her. At no point during the creative process have I ever thought, well I should be doing something more strenuous, like cleaning or reassessing my budget or calling my relatives. My thoughts usually drift into the realm of I want another cookie and maybe I should take a nap.
“Yeah. It’s funny. I can never write at home either. I have to be out somewhere.”
I like it Salt on my rim
“I know, why is that? I love coming here to write.”
And, that’s what the entire experience with my writing has been: a process. I haven’t always been on point, regardless of the surrounding visual stimulations or therapeutic relaxation practices. I’ve appreciated the advice from all angles, but the reality is, there’s no rhyme or reason to what inspires me or gives way to a solid piece of writing. Certainly there are some personal trends that will remain staples in my life as I continue to explore what my gift will be to the literary world - coffee shops and empty bars. But, being distracted at home with a desire to dust the draperies? Never a concern of mine.
“Oh really? I’m a writer too.”
I was shocked. Here was another budding writer who understood my desire to extrapolate from the confines of the home. I was also thrilled that she and I were just simply talking about writing. If I was Hemingway, maybe I had just met my James Joyce! I immediately started to fantasize about us seated in Race Street Cafe together, with matching MacBook Pros and droopy berets, reading to each other from our works and clinking our glasses of wine. Yeah, if I’m at home and trying to write, I’m usually thinking about other things that I should be doing.

The new Mulsanne Speed is tailored for the driver, with 537 PS (530 bhp / 395 kW), 1,100 Nm (811 lb.ft) and selectable sports suspension and steering on demand. The reengineered powertrain, featuring Bentley’s mighty 6¾-litre twin-turbo V8, propels the Mulsanne Speed to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) and on to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h). In modern Bentley tradition, the extra perfo rmance is matched by markedly improved efficiency; a 13% gain means a range extended by 50 miles (80 km). New and contemporary styling features define the Musanne Speed as a statement in quintessential British luxury. On-board technology and connectivit y are discreetly integrated beneath the finest materials, created with unrivalled craftsmanship an d exquisite handcrafted details. Chairman and Chief Executive of Bentley Motors, Wolfgang Dürheimer, comm\ments: ‘The new Mulsanne Speed is the car that defines Bentley, as a flagship for driving luxury performance. Our customers don’t compromise, and we’ve adopted the same approach in the design, engineering and crafting of our new flagship. The Mulsanne Speed is distinguished, calm and relaxing, but always with a connection to the road and relentless dynamic performance on demand. In this car, every journey becomes a drive.’ Torque pushed to record levels. At the heart of the Mulsanne Speed is Bentley’s iconic 6¾- litre twin-turbo V8 engine, which has been re-engineered for the Mulsanne Speed as well as the signature Mulsanne. A totally redesigned combustion system (including combustion SOCIETY MAGAZINE

chamber, inlet ports, fuel injectors, spark plugs, and compression ratio) promotes a much faster and more controlled combustion process. Through com bining these advances with new variable valve timing and optimised turboc harger control, torque output of the engine has been pushed to record levels - 1,000 Nm (811 lb ft) from 1,750 rpm. The swell of torque from low engine speeds builds to a new peak power output of 537 PS, enough to drive the Mulsanne Speed to a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) - an unrivalled figure in the ultra-luxery sector. The 0-60 mph sprint is covered in 4.8 seconds, with 0-100 km/h talking just 4.9 seconds. The new engine is paired with a recalibrated gearbo x designed to enhance the driving experience of the Mulsanne Speed. The gear strategy is optimised for the new, higher wave of torque, and is designed for instant torque delivery on throttle application. The connection between the car and driver has been the focus, and extensive validation with both keen drivers, and professional chauffeurs has proven the new setup. A new ‘S’ mode gives the driver even more control, and maintains the engine speed above 2,000 rpm so that the turbochargers are always ready to deliver instantaneous performance. An extensive recallibration of the engine management system has yielded benefits beyond increased torque and power. The cylinder deactivation system, that runs the engine as a V4 during light load, has been retuned for smoother transitions between V8 and V4 for even greater refinement. The work combines with a new gearbox control strategy and the engine hardware improvements to give a new level of efficiency for the Mulsanne engine. Meeting the new EU6 emissions legislation, and designed to also meet the upcoming US LEV lll standards in the future, the new powertrain records 342 g/km of C02 on the NEDC drive cycle - a 13% improvement on the current Mulsanne. The ensuring fuel economy improvements have extended the fuel range of the new Mulsanne by 50 miles (80 km). To deply the effortless power and acceleration on offer in the Mulsanne Speed, and even more driver-focused Sport suspension mode is included. While the Bentley and Comfort suspen
sion modes provide a comfort-focused and fully compliant chassis setup, the Sport mode stiffens the all-round air suspention for improved body control and adjusts the steering dynamics for greater feedback and accuracy. The driver can also chose to individually match steering, chassis and engine tunes according to personal preference through the Custom setting. Through this new setup, the Mulsanne Speed builds on the abilities of the signature Mulsanne model, being able to switch from a communicative and enjoyable car to drive at pace, to a relaxing comfortable and exceptionally refined limousine. A Cabin of Contemporary Luxery. The cabin of the Mulsanne Speed is a contempory reinterpretaion of the exquite interior if the Bentely flagship. To create a modern two-tone feel, a new and unique colour split is available, with new stitch lines, that balances diamond quilted light-colour hide with darker, smooth hide. A new technical veneer option is available, with Piano Black veneer panels, now including expertly handcrafted carbon fibre inlays. These new, contemporary panels have been especialy developed for the Mulsanne Speed and match the ritch, lustrous finish of the Piano Black veneer. Signature Mulsanne updated for 2015 The signature Mulsanne ultra-luxery sedan has been updated for 2015, to complement the launch of the performance- focused Mulsanne Speed. The Mulsanne receives the same effeciency upgrade through new engine hardware, with its 512 PS (505 bhp), 1, 020 Nm (752 lb. ft) 6他- litre twin-turbo V8 engine also now 13% more efficient. Changes have also been made to the gearbox calibration of the Mulsanne focusing on smoother relaxed gear changes that promote a comfortable and refined driving experience. New paint colours, hide and veneers options are also available across the Mulsanne family.

2015 MCLAREN 650S Designed and developed to give the enthusiast driver the ultimate in luxury, engagement and excitement - The McLaren 650S will offer the widest breadth of capabilities of any supercar - Coupé and Spider, with electrically retractable hardtop, to be available from spring 2014 launch - oins McLaren’s range of supercars above 12C, which continues on sale - Uniquely enhanced active aerodynamics and ProActive Chassis Control systems optimise the capabilities and usability McLaren Automotive will return to the International Geneva Motor Show this year with its fastest, most engaging, best equipped and most beautiful seriesproduction supercar yet. The McLaren 650S joins the range as an additional model alongside the 12C and sold-out McLaren P1™, and learns from both models as well as 50 years of competing in the highest levels of motorsport. Available as a fixed-head coupé or as a Spider, with a retractable folding hard top, the McLaren 650S promises to redefine the high performance supercar segment, and has been designed and developed to provide the ultimate in driver engagement on the road and on the race track. The 650S badge designation refers to the power output – 650PS (641 bhp), - of the unique British-built McLaren M838T twin turbo V8 engine. ‘S’ stands for ‘Sport’, underlining the focus and developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement. Performance figures will be confirmed ahead of the Geneva Show but will improve on the already rapid 12C which continues on sale.
The design is inspired by the McLaren P1™, previewing a new family design language. The front bumper gives the McLaren 650S a dramatic, yet clean appearance and sits below new LED headlamps which reflect a similar look to the McLaren P1™. The more integrated front splitter contributes to increased levels of downforce, giving a greater level of steering feeling and confidence to the driver on turn-in, while also adding to the agility and the car’s handling balance. Unique door blades behind the front wheels direct air from the trailing edges of the front splitter, further benefiting frontend grip and vehicle balance. The aerodynamic performance of the McLaren 650S is as efficient as the 12C, boasting the same drag coefficient figure, yet the air is being worked harder and more efficiently as it flows over, and through, the functional bodywork. At 150 mph, downforce levels are increased by 24 percent. ‘As always with McLaren, the new design is there for good engineering reasons,’ says McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt. ‘The newly designed front bumper improves downforce and steering turn-in. The high speed handling balance is now even better. The LED lights use less power and last longer. Unique side intakes behind the dihedral doors feed large, efficiently packaged, radiators which help provide the cooling requirements of the mid-mounted, compact engine. A new design five-spoke lightweight forged ‘650S’ alloy wheel is unique to the model, and are fitted with Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres to offer optimised roadholding, handling and driver feedback – the bespoke ‘MC1’ branded tyres have been developed alongside the McLaren 650S by McLaren technology partner Pirelli, and offer strong performance in normal road conditions and on track. the track, and groundbreaking technologies fitted to other McLaren models. Active aerodynamics, which feature on both the 12C and McLaren P1™, have been further developed and honed to ensure the ultimate performance and ability for the McLaren 650S. The McLaren Airbrake, originally fitted to the 12C and 12C Spider and designed to offer optimised levels of downforce on the rear of the car, now operates with a greater level of functionality providing increased stability. The newly developed system means the Airbrake deploys whenever the car senses extra downforce is advisable – rather than simply under braking or when manually operated in ‘Aero’ mode. Below the Airbrake, a distinctive rear three-piece bumper, similar to the GT3 racing version of the 12C, compliments the aerodynamic shaping of the McLaren 650S. The pioneering ProActive Chassis Control (PCC) suspension system, developed by McLaren, has been further enhanced for the McLaren 650S. A feature of the system is the ability to adjust the ride and handling modes – Normal / Sport / Track – in isolation from the drivetrain, which gives complete
freedom in terms of ride and handling. These settings, for both powertrain and suspension, have been recalibrated to improve driver engagement. The updates are especially noticeable in Sport mode. ‘McLaren is a fast moving company, continually striving for improvements and technical advantages. We are always seeking to innovate, to be the class leaders, to bring new technologies and thinking to market. That’s our Formula 1 heritage shining through,’ explains Mike Flewitt. ‘Everything we’ve learnt from the 12C and the McLaren P1™ has gone into the design and development of the McLaren 650S.’ The McLaren 650S is designed to be the best and most engaging driver’s car in its class, yet it is not a stripped out road racer. Ride comfort and refinement are to executive saloon standards. The McLaren 650S models are equipped with IRIS satellite navigation with Bluetooth telephony, DAB digital radio (SIRIUS satellite radio in North America), wireless tethering, audio streaming and voice control as standard, while also offering enhanced levels of optional specification than previously offered. Options include fixed-back carbon racing seats, based on the lightweight design found in the McLaren P1™, an electric steering column adjustment assisting ingress and egress, a rear parking camera and extended carbon fibre throughout the interior. The global reveal of the McLaren 650S Coupéand Spider will took place on Stand 1240, Hall 1 at 12.00CET (11.00GMT) on Tuesday, 4 March 2014 at the 84th International Geneva Motor Show. source: McLaren Press

SMART DRESS
SMART NOT SLIM There’s a general trend this season to move away from the slim fit that’s dominated popular fashion over the past five or six years – baggy has been brought in from the cold, with a number of top designers incorporating a few inches’ slack in their cut. This has been especially noticeable with regard to jackets and coats, oversized round the body and extended to a considerable length over the leg.
PORTABLE POUCH The age-old question surrounding the man bag was raised on the change of season catwalks, where models adopted strapless ‘pouches’. Some men may never be at ease with holding an accessory at their side, but the brains behind the major fashion houses seem to be convinced we’ll all be at it soon enough - the jury remains out. 54

INVEST IN THE BEST One piece of advice that sticks is to buy fabrics that will keep clothing at its best – particularly those that won’t lose their shape - for years into the future. HOROSCOPES ARIES (MARCH 21 - APR. 20) If you think that you have it “all together,” just wait and see how things can change this week. Aries may fall head over heels for an exotic, sexy stranger. All the carefully calculated future plans shatter. Sometimes you need a bit of a shake-up to make you realize that you have become too staid and routine. Turn up the heat and shake and bake, lover. TAURUS (APR. 21 - MAY 21) One good turn deserves another. At least that is wh at they say. Now, benefit greatly from doing various random acts of kindness. Charitable works have more than their usual amount of benefits. And, even small efforts can produce mammoth results. You may wind up meeting your match. Now strike up the band and dance, dance, dance! GEMINI (MAY 22 - JUNE 21) If you are experiencing problems with partners, pal s can provide sage advice. When in doubt, head to the nearest watering hole, hoist a few friendly brews and chit chat with the bartender. If you are searching for your soul mate, you might discover a gem among the rubble. CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 23) Work hard, demand your rights and see the benefits this week. Cancers feel as if they have been toiling unnoticed in the salt mines without so much as a lump of sugar. But now, you can begin to see the sweet rewards of your good efforts. A promotion may be in the offering, or perhaps a raise. Gather your rosebuds and deliver the thorns to your competitor. LIBRA (SEPT. 24 - OCT. 23) If relationships have had their ups and downs, this is the week to get things in balance again. Or, if you feel like it, tip your scales and send things into an entirely different (and better) direction. Libras will not only be able to smooth any ruffled feathers, they can also pluck and stuff any old bird. Charm certainly pays off. Well, at least sometimes and with some people. SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) If you can gird your loins and really apply yourself to any tasks (even menial ones), you can expect great accomplishments. Scorpios rake in the bucks and take control of their financial destiny. Even a tiny effort pays off so don’t be lazy. As long as you are girding, build

SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 - DEC. 22) Sagittarians amp up their charisma and find themsel ves in the epicenter of the social universe. You could not blend into the background if you’re tried. So don’t even try! Have fun, meet multitudes of new folks and launch a few new great ideas. Spread yourself thin. Burning your candle at both ends can result in a puddle of wax ... but what a way to go! CAPRICORN (DEC. 23 - JAN. 20) There is little reason to go beyond your front door this week. Capricorns are content to just laze around the house and enjoy all sorts of slow, sensual and languid activities. And why not? Fate brings it all to you on a platter - love, lust and laughter. So far so good. Of course you have to move yourself far enough to get up to answer the front door AQUARIUS (JAN. 21 - FEB. 19) Talk candidly to your friends and see dramatic improvements in the relationship. Yes, honesty is the best policy, but a little compliment here and there coul dn’t hurt either. Aquarians should also expand their social circle by becoming more involved in select groups and organizations. You never know who you can impress, especially when you press your case. PISCES (FEB. 20 - MARCH 20) If you found yourself burning the midnight oil at work with the sinking feeling that no one noticed your efforts, think again. Living the High Life at The Dylan, Amsterdam By Katy Parker
There can be no place finer than Amsterdam in early summer. The tulips are out in bloom and cycles along the picturesque canals are enhanced by the sunshine and the reduced chance of being caught in a downpour. And, there can surely be no place more splendid to spend a summer sojourn in Amsterdam than The Dylan hotel.
home. The secluded garden courtyard is perfect for the summer months and there is a superb range of dining options. The Michelin-starred Vinkeles serves up refined classic French cuisine with a contemporary twist, while Brasserie Occo offers unpretentious cooking which is packed with flavour.
Regarded as one of the city’s hidden gems, the hotel is situated in a 17th century landmark building on the edge of one of Amsterdam’s famed canals. Maintaining a boutique feel throughout, The Dylan’s 40 rooms and suites have all been individually designed in different styles and hand painted in a variety of colours. My particular suite was decked out in mature hues of mahogany brown and deep grey and afforded charming views over the canal; I don’t mind saying that it was also nearly double the size of my flat. The décor succeeds in seamlessly marrying together the old and the new, with a contemporary design and luxurious furnishings, while still retaining the classic heritage charm of the building.
For something a bit different, be sure to sample The Dylan’s ‘High Wine’; a unique signature concept which is now (with varying degrees of success) being replicated by other hotels. With this innovative take on High Tea, you can enjoy four amuse bouche style dishes from the chefs at Vinkeles accompanied by four wines which are designed to complement the flavours of the food. Menus change frequently but always feature three savoury courses and one sweet and the cooking is invariably superb.
Choose from the Serendipity Collection – a range of 16 suites which have recently been renovated in collaboration with Remy Meijers, a celebrated Dutch interior designer and features the divine Jacob van Campen Suites – or the Loxura Rooms, which are slightly quirkier in their design with the use of vivid velvet chairs and motherof-pearl detailing on the furniture. Every room exudes sophistication and class; from the marble features and plush woolen rugs to the Miller Harris toiletries in the bathroom. Despite the vast size of the rooms, the hotel boasts an intrinsically intimate vibe and the staff could not do more to ensure that your stay feels like a veritable home from
The hotel is within easy reach of all the city’s major attractions, and your sightseeing is further facilitated by The Dylan’s bicycles, which are reserved exclusively for guests. Cycling is really the only way to travel in Amsterdam and there is truly nothing better than meandering around the city’s parks and canals on your trusty two wheels. Art and history buffs are spoilt for choice with the city’s range of galleries and museums but the Ann Frank House and Van Gogh Museum are must-sees and will appeal to even the most unwilling culture vulture. This is a city which blossoms in summertime and has so much to offer. And while Amsterdam may have no shortage of legal highs, a stay at The Dylan surely tops the lot.
