Succumbing to technology

I

t’s a good bet you have a cell phone that tapes video, shoots high-quality photos, records conversations, allows you to communicate with friends and family from almost anywhere in the world— in real time—make millions of purchases, trade stocks, and do almost anything you wish to accomplish at a moment’s notice. There’s also a good chance you’re sporting a digital watch—keeping track of your heart rate, sleep patterns, amount of exercise you’ve had in the last 24-hours, the number of calories you’ve eaten today, and the amount of water you’ve downed this week. Your television keeps you from the theater because the at-home experience rivals the best public movie house. Then, there’s your personal assistant Alexa. This device keeps track of your every need and is so advanced she’s able to make predictions about your behavior, (it’s a bit eerie—don’t you think?). And, what home isn’t complete without state-of-the-art security; one which rivals what most banks had only a few years ago. With this in mind, there are still advancements which remain undiscovered by some, and as we recently learned, they may soon visit you when you travel. On a recent trip to Buffalo, New York, after checking into the Westin Hotel, a call was placed to the front desk for coffee-pods. In about two minutes the phone rang, and a recorded message stated, “Chip is at the door.” There wasn’t a knock, but because we were curious, the directive wasn’t questioned. As the door opened, a kaleidoscope of fantasy and reality merged; in a moment of clarity as to how far we had come, suddenly it became evident. We witnessed, what up until this moment was science-fiction, the real-thing. Patiently standing in front of us, with lights flashing and the ability to give directions—complete with verbal skills inquiring if the service and our stay were satisfactory—“Chip” the robot-butler made quite an impression. Noticeably faster than a human, (based on our experience), the mechanical—rather digital—servant was extremely polite, brought the correct items—again, in record 10 FEBRUARY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

time, and didn’t require a tip. Our amazement continued after we returned to the room where recollections of the Jetsons, an animated sitcom which gained in popularity during the early sixties took over the conversation. For those who may not recall specific details, the cartoon portrayed space-age conveniences that made George, Jane, Judy, and Elroy’s lives enviably--merely a fantasy at the time when color television wasn’t universal, and everyone had an antenna on the roof. It was a period of wild imagination and wishful thinking for advanced technology. Readers may recall hearing comments coming from the kitchen while the children were parked in front of a TV encased in a box; “I could use one of those,” just as Rosie—the Jetson’s robot maid—entered the scene. We acknowledge that what we experienced was the culmination of dreams for advanced technology, coming to fruition within our lifetime. As each day passes, advances and improvements change society, albeit, with a price. It’s each person’s destiny to evaluate and determine what technology is allowed into their homes, considering they have little control over monitoring taking place in public locations. Major corporations have swelled into multinational institutions which have a dossier on just about everyone who walks the planet. At the same time, our government— besides turning politics into a blood sport— takes your hard-earned tax dollars and pays “public servants” (not any longer), to create laws, enforce restrictions and run interference by preventing people from going about their lives in a free society. With attacks on individuals, allowed by specific groups—including those perpetrated by the media, we are witnessing radical fringe groups attempting to control the rights of the larger population. Through restricting speech, the right to (safe) assembly and protest; even to claim that independent thoughts should be fairgame for monitoring and punishing, citizens are being forced to live by the doctrine of these self-appointed social-guardians. Chip isn’t responsible for this, but he may

take claim for waking those who realize that we are losing our independence, because of a few who insist on exercising an idealizedbut outdated political agenda. These vocal and uncompromising individuals seem hell-bent on hijacking society and seem to have the notion that the American people are to be controlled like show animals. Many issues we face create fear and animosity because as much as we try to adjust, we lose our grasp on what is believed to be traditional values and morality. It is disheartening to see political leaders attempt to confuse the public with preposterous interpretations of how morality should be defined. Information on demand is a luxury—but in some cases, it allows people to react without forethought, and to attack those whom they disagree. The challenges we face today are no different than that of other generations, although their intensity seems amplified due to an unwillingness to compromise. Where do we go from here? There is comfort in recalling the satisfaction in reading print on paper, sitting comfortably and quietly, left to enjoy personal and private thoughts and opinions; being allowed to contemplate issues—rather than react to them. This month is like most others as we roll through the past, present, and future. We try to create a space which allows reflection, curiosity and push readers into action. Our effort includes distraction while instilling confidence to overcome personal struggles and understand a fast-moving world. If each month we achieved this mission, then our goal has been reached, and at that point, we consider ourselves successful; something we’ve attempted to do with every issue we print. Happy Valentines Day and we wish you all great skiing, riding, (and surfing). H

he Star of the Sea was once a religious retreat, only to be abandoned, then set aflame. Later, it became a popular location for viewing the inner harbor and enjoying Forth-of-July fireworks some forty-fifty years ago. Surrounded by picture-perfect scenery, and in the proximity of Padanaram’s beautiful outer harbor and village, it 16 FEBRUARY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

wasn’t long before developers eyed the location as an ideal place build a luxuryhome community. The initial development began— approximately three decades ago—with the largest and most expansive homes placed along the immediate shoreline; this was followed by many more homes constructed off of the long drive which connects Russells Mills Road to the furthest point south. Star of the Sea shares a large area with the Dartmouth Natural Resource Trust,

which ensures the protection of the old growth while keeping development in check. Because of these safeguards, the large compound has a sense of privacy without the uncomfortable feeling of seclusion. Those in search of a home may be accustomed to hearing a realtors’ comment, “the best houses were built years ago.” And while that conclusion is sometimes correct, when it comes to 128 Star of the Sea Drive, in South Dartmouth, nothing could be more accurate.

With a combination of classic architecture, including many updated features, this traditional-style home has touches usually found in the most exclusive properties. Through an attractive portico, guests are led to an open foyer which instead of having them face a massive stairwell— found in most new homes—they’re greeted by a tasteful double-door guest closet which leaves a beautiful space for making introductions and the perfect location for refined decorating and the assembly of art and objects of interest.

Constructed in 1993, it is a solid structure and has good-bones. The 3,380 sq. ft. property boasting an extra-large first level ensuite master bedroom with expansive closet and cathedral beamed ceiling is more than enough reason to take a closer look at this handsome Cape. Off the rear of the home is a sizable bluestone terrace with dual access to the dining room and family room/kitchen and is the perfect setting for alfresco dining during the warm weather. Besides the master suite on the first floor, this wonderful house offers another first-floor bedroom/office with a full bath creating an oasis of living on one level. The second floor is comprised of a large bedroom suite, with a sitting area, two guests/children’s bedrooms with ample closets. With all of this, there is still more that

will put this home at the top of someone’s list. Over the garage is a beautifully appointed office, with a full bathroom and plumbing ready for a kitchenette. This space could also be used for an au pair’s residence, in-law apartment or an art studio and gallery. Adding to the refinements of the home is recessed lighting, French doors, chair-rails, wainscoting, and hardwood floors. This home awaits someone who wishes to put their creativity to use and personalize this remarkable property. With vision and good-taste this home is ideal for summer use or as a full-time residence. efore heading to The Winter Show, the (renowned art, antiques, and design fair held at the historic Park Avenue Armory in New York City), for a presentation of her lecture, Gorham Silver: Designing Brilliance 1850-1970, Elizabeth A. Williams, the David and Peggy Rockefeller Curator of Decorative, Arts and Design, at the RISD Museum, first offered her talk to an enthusiastic audience at Boston auction houseSkinner, on January 12. Williams, a noted and accomplished curator with expertise in 18th and 19th-century silver, possess a specialized understanding of an industry, its artistry, innovation, and technology. She is an authority on Gorham’s storied past and its 120-year legacy. Williams has played a significant role in the creation, development, and management of the museum and gallery’s collection of Gorham Silver. The Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Gorham’s designs, wares, and history. Addressing a full-to-capacity crowd at the posh showroom of the famed auctioneers, Williams led the captivated group through the many years of growth the company enjoyed, concluding with their unfortunate demise.

During the hour presentation, Williams shared nuggets of facts, including one which caused significant pause. For those unaware, the Gorham Manufacturing Company—once the largest producers of exquisite sterling silver in the world, had not only competed with the most famous jewelry and silver merchant of the period —Tiffany & Co., but they produced products for them; that was until the highly-recognized brand ventured into manufacturing themselves. Much of the evening’s lecture focused on the early days of the firm’s growth with a description of how design and innovation led the way to the company’s success. Most notably were details about Gorham employees being committed to turning a start-up business into a leader on the international stage. Fascinating, was a visual presentation which detailed the significance and historical importance of silver in the realm of dining room experiences, its uses, and importance in celebrations and socialization during different eras.

Williams, a noted and accomplishment curator with expertise in 18th and 19th-century silver, possess a specialized understanding of an industry, its artistry, innovation, and technology. She is an authority on Gorham’s storied past and its 120-year legacy.

Williams also shared a behind the scenes look at the difficult task of creating the RISD Museum’s magnificent presentation. It appeared that much of their efforts in building the collection went into investigating the smallest details. After assembling thousands of pieces of silver and documents, the staff began to construct what could be described as a giant puzzle. Placing lost information into an immense schematic, the telling of the Gorham story would become complete, accurate and compelling. In the end, the tale leads to how a company faulted and struggled for survival, finally succumbing to changes in taste and societal norms, never to return to its position as an industry leader. H This engagement was part of a prelude to the RISD Museum’s much-anticipated event, Gorham Silver-Designing Brilliance 18501970, scheduled for May 3 – December 1, 2019, at the Museum. Upon the conclusion of exhibits run in Providence, plans have been made for it to travel to the Cincinnati Art Museum and The Mint Museum.

JOURNEYS ONWARD Veterans’ Experiences in Art and Words Wickford Art Association of North Kingstown, RI Announces a Call for Art

O BY MARGOT ROBERTS

ver many decades, members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families have embarked on countless journeys as a result of their enlistment. Visiting every corner of the globe, these soldiers have enjoyed whirlwind adventures offering the excitement of travel and an opportunity to meet new people while exploring distant cultures; all of which satisfies their thirst for exploration. For others, it is the solace and a sense of purpose, held close to their hearts, as they serve their country while facing the danger and challenges of living in a world of tension and conflict. For these soldiers the choice comes down to loyalty and bravery—it’s what drew them into military service. Regardless of purpose, these dedicated men and women sacrifice more than most people realize. At the same time, they’re able to take pleasure in creating life-long bonds with their cadre and find appreciation in the fact they have joined an elite group of people who share enduring memories of their service and take pride in what has become the fabric of their souls. However, it isn’t always pleasurable; the jungles, deserts and bombed-out cities accompanied by the constant fear of taking a bullet you don’t hear, weighs heavy on both heart and mind even years after they’ve completed their duty. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2019 25

CYNTHIA DIDONATO (MILITARY FAMILY) “NIGHT RESCUE”/ WAA

We often hear about how wartime experiences cement complex and enduring memories into a soldier’s psyche. Until very recently, their difficulty to cope with the nightmares went unheralded. Good or bad, vivid or just a faded memory, our Armed Forces community— both active and retired—remain vital to our safety and security, and it is because of this debt, our nation owes them as many opportunities as possible. It is a thrill to learn that the Rhode Island art community is taking steps to ensure that our troops are never forgotten and are given a chance to express their wealth of experiences, joy, and pain. The Journeys Onward Veterans’ Experiences in Art and Words, as presented by the Wickford Art Association of North Kingston, will host an exhibit of 2-D and 3-D 26 FEBRUARY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

With so much to share, few opportunities are available to veterans and their loved ones to tell their personal stories and beginning a dialogue. OPENING CEREMONY AT WOODSTOCK (WITH SWAMI), AUGUST 1969

Woodstock Continues To Teach Valuable Lessons BY STEVE CHAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK GOFF

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2019 29

THE SCENE AT WOODSTOCK, AUGUST 1969

30 FEBRUARY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

oodstock yeah—cool. You may have some recollection— or not, but regardless of the slightest memories remaining from this one of a kind iconic music event, Woodstock defined activism and protest by a new generation. Through their heartfelt demonstration of unity against the establishment, revolting due to injustices, and the creation of a movement expressed by peace, free-love, tie-dye, and acid, the after-effects of Woodstock would become a monument to resistance, and credited for advancing the position, “Power to the people,” for generations who followed. With 2019, being the 50th anniversary of the iconic music festival, one of Woodstock’s original organizers is betting that veterans of the legendary rock concert, their children and grandchildren will yield to nostalgia and attempt to reenact the “half-a-million strong” who turned a wet, dreary, muddy field—located in upper state New York, into music’s most important event. Michael Lang, a producer from the original Woodstock Festival, is planning an anniversary that will appeal to a disgruntled and motivated voter block, even though he faces competition from dozens of events—some having lures of exotic appeal and contemporary twists on old themes. Complicating his quest is a neighbor who has their eyes on what could be viewed as unfriendly competition. While the original concert and those that followed, have been known for their hard-core atmosphere due to environmental conditions and questionable crowdcontrol methods. This summer’s event will likely be more sedate and safer than say, Woodstock-30, (held in 1999), a party

which was shamed by rioting, accusations of sexual assault, and fires. The plan, as announced, is for the threeday event to be held at Watkins Glenn, within an hour of a dairy lot where the original festival took place. The new location is pegged to be at the international race track located in the same general vicinity. According to Lang, this isn’t just an event for just listening to music, but rather it is to enlist people who wish to become socially engaged and to act as a forum for registering voters. Without full knowledge of the promoters motivation, it also appears to be an exercise in enlisting groups of people—radical or otherwise—to register to vote and flood ballot boxes so they might turn the table on political leadership-both liberal and conservative. Interesting, and confusing for many, just as Woodstock-50 was announced, (and to the chagrin of many loyalists), an organization within an hour away from the site of Woodstock-50, a different group launched their plans for a celebration of the historic music concert. The Bethel Woods Center of the Arts sent out this release to primary news sources: [This summer a] pan-generational

2019 exhibit We, Are Golden: Reflections on the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival and Aspirations for an Aquarian Future. It’s odd and concerning that this battle for the almighty dollar would result in the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts to hold an anniversary event that resembles Woodstock-50. For all intents and purpose, the scheduling and predatory grab for the same audience seems to be counter to the theme Woodstock has been credited with for decades. Where is the rejection of corporate influence and greed over the people’s best interests? We can only guess if this battle is centered around an effort to define who can outspend the other on promotion, and ring-up the highest number of ticket sales which may result in the other festival to either fail or come out at the break-even point. With a zero-sum game on the horizon, what appears to be most disingenuous about the conflict is that the storied history behind Woodstock—having us believe that we must fight and rule-out corporate influence, wealth and double-dealing has failed. It appears that the public will be left with the notion that their fights and sacrifices

JULIUS AND ETHEL ROSENBERG

Was Justice Served? The Case of the Rosenbergs— From a Son’s Perspective BY LINDA BERTRUM

I

n 1951 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were tried and convicted to charges of conspiracy and espionage, resulting in the couple being put to death in the electric chair two years later. The pair had been accused of passing top-secret information over to Russian agents, that were related to the atomic, or more accurately, a fission bomb. With Julius arrested in the summer of 1950, it wasn’t long after—only two months later—Ethel was also charged.

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2019 33

The couple claimed to be innocent, but after a trial in 1951, the duo was convicted of charges, and in April of the same year a judge proclaimed they be sentenced to death. With this, Julius and Ethel were sent to a prison in Ossining, New York, known as “Sing Sing” where they stayed until their day of punishment. For the next couple of years, outrage was trumpeted internationally, because many believed that the fate of the Rosenbergs was due to a national hysteria and a belief that the communists were infiltrating into the United States. Ultimately, with polls indicating the majority of Americans believing the couple was guilty, the execution went on; first Julius, who was strapped to the chair on June 19, 1953, just after 8:00 a.m., followed by his wife’s demise only minutes later—in the same chair. Interestingly, the two never admitted guilt and in fact, they went to their deaths, proclaiming their innocence and leaving two sons behind; Michael and Robert. According to the Art & Entertainment Network’s website “History,” there was a strong case against Julius, but a much weaker one leveled on his wife. The author of the story about the Rosenbergs—on the site‚claims there was evidence that pointed to Julius organizing a ring of spies comprised of “engineers and scientists.” Dr. Clune, the author states that the group had passed a “prototype of the fuse for the atomic bomb to Julius, who in turn, passed it along to his Soviet handler in 1944.” Giving rise to the veracity of this claim is the fact that in May of 1960, according to the writer, the technical information gathered was used to take down a U2 jet, flown by Francis Gary Powers. If true, then Julius would have been guilty of the Espionage Act and would face either the outcome received or up to 30 years in prison. On the other hand, it seemed while his wife was complicit due to the knowledge of the spying, she didn’t have the same level of

involvement in the dark deeds, which many argue that she should have never followed her husband to the chair. Going unknown is what took place behind the chaotic scenes of a nation roiling from what they viewed as an injustice; few have ever asked the question, “What happen to the Rosenberg children?” Coming to the SouthCoast, activist, author and attorney, Robert Meeropol, who was six-years-old when his parents, Julius and Ethel were sent to the electric chair, will present a riveting discussion about the controversial trial and divulge a message sent to him and his brother by their parents, only hours before they met their fate. Orphaned at six, kicked out of school, seized by police, it took Meeropol 40 years to transform a horrendous childhood into a positive vision. He will unpack the volumes of previously kept secret evidence finally made public and fit it into the public’s understanding of the facts about his parents’ cases. Meeropol is the founder of the Rosenberg Fund for Children, started in 1990 and is the embodiment of the foundation. Guests can expect to hear the speaker share his experiences of the past and explain how history has created today’s “children of resistance.” This is a rare opportunity to learn about Meeropol’s opinions of how contemporary children react to a government who has oppressed and suppressed their parent’s efforts to combat racism, protest police brutality, preserve civil liberties, safeguard the environment, wage peace, and organize on behalf of immigrants, workers, prisoners, queer and transgender people, as well as others who live under threat. WHY US? Are Americans the Guinea Pigs of the World? BY JAMES HOLDEN

What would you think about the health of your food supply if what you purchased for your family was prohibited for sale in foreign countries? Where is the comfort, knowing that what is inside—say that box of breakfast cereal sitting on the table, the one with the cartoons that kids are attracted too, isn’t available to children in Europe because of the chemicals inside? You may be shocked to learn that many food additives; like dyes, preservatives, thickening agents, chemicals, even the packaging of processed foods, are banned by our neighbors who are part of the European Union.

For some American families, a trip to the grocery store is reminiscent to high school chemistry class. Labels with long lists of unrecognized substances—many, impossible to pronounce, surround the actual ingredients you intend to purchase. Then, there’s the question of how our bodies will react to these chemicals and if there will be harmful effects resulting from long-term use. One reason Europe bans additives in their food-supply is simple; testing has reported a link, even a propensity, for causing cancer in laboratory animals. With research suggesting these “franken-foods” should be banned, grocery store shelves remain stocked with what is ostensible—poisoned nutrition. Other issues in play are the use of antibiotics and growth hormones in livestock. Overseas, there is strict oversight regarding their use; while in this country, the local butcher or supermarket proudly displays plumb chicken breasts, faintly marbled pork or beef, that would have probably died in a feedlot if they weren’t shot up with aminoglycosides, a spectrum of antibiotics to treat “serious infections,” according to Frieda Wiley, PharmD, CGP, RPh). Of note, while food producers hail the use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), in their efforts to expand food production, these “patented” foods have been designed to feed the world, even though many countries don’t allow these crops to be grown, harvested, or sold to their people. SO AGAIN; WHY US? It’s well-known that many U.S. companies reformulate food-stuffs for Europe while insisting on selling the “doctored-up” products to U.S. consumers who; don’t care, don’t know enough, or are too busy to pay attention to what they serve their families. Food conglomerates are big; they have lots of money, teams of scientists and lawyers who work tirelessly looking for loopholes in the law. If they are found in violation of regulations, they will likely file an appeal which could take years before the additive is removed from the product. Meanwhile, scientists are busy creating substitutes, which will be available as a replacement, but may not be any better— perhaps worse—than the one banned.

A FEW THINGS EVERY PERSON SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE FOOD ENJOYED TODAY: CASE I. That delicious bakery item from this morning, the pizza dough that bakes up fresh at lunch, the tasty loaf of bread—to pair with dinner this evening—or those chocolate chip cookies you love so much; well, there is a good chance they’re loaded with ADA: Azodicarbonamide. What is ADA? It’s a chemical used as a whitening agent in flour, and a conditioner in all the other products mentioned. IS IT SAFE? Manufacturers would like you to believe so, but analysis of the chemical has shown that in lab animals, those given a high-dose of the chemical agent end up with a higher incidence of tumors, especially in female mice.

CASE II. You love cold-cuts, and your baby loves rice cereal in the morning. Time to step back; the packing of these products leave you at risk. Many plastic containers conceal Bisphenol A, (BPA), a chemical that after being consumed, acts in the same manner as estrogen. IS IT SAFE? No, according to Scientific America, “Studies have shown that [BTA] can promote human breast cancer cell growth and lower sperm counts. Pregnant women, infants, and children are at highest risk.”

Europe: Banned

Europe: Found to be a public health-hazard; use has been approved in low concentrations, while further study is being conducted.

WISE WEIGHT LOSS A Practical, Evidence-Based Approach BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, MED

D

espite a nearly 70-billion dollar industry built around it, expanding waistlines in the US and their subsequent health problems (cardiovascular, joint-related, etc.) remain a growing concern. According to data from the ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, roughly 33 percent of US adults aged 20 and up are overweight, 38 percent are obese and eight percent extremely obese; while the most susceptible ethnicities are Hispanic, non-Hispanic White and nonHispanic black.1 Among nations, the US and Mexico seem to be vying for top honors as the fattest nation in the world, say various surveys. As explained by the National Institutes of Health’s Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK), contributing factors for weight gain in adults and children include heredity, poor eating, and sleeping habits, and sedentary lifestyle—a primary driver being screen time (computers, phones, TV).2 Additionally, medical conditions and medications, geographic location (which can limit access to healthy food and safe places to recreate) and local culture carry significant weight.2 With the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development predicting nearly half of all Americans will be obese by 2030, how can individuals avoid becoming a statistic of modern living?3 In a word: lifestyle. THINK SMALL In weight loss, seemingly small changes can confer big dividends. The following are proven ways to accomplish much with relatively little pain: 48 FEBRUARY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

BREAK THE FAST Studies show regular breakfast eaters have lower body mass indexes and better mental performance whereas those who skip end up eating more throughout the day. (Body mass index is determined by a person’s weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. While not accounting for body fat percentage, normal weight is considered a BMI of 18.5-24.9, overweight 25-29.9 and obesity 30 or higher.4) CUT THE SUGAR An addictive and fattening substance, added sugars are sugar added during food processing (sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, etc.). The American Heart Association recommends no more than 25 grams per day for women and 38 for men; yet, the average American consumes almost 57 pounds annually, or about 71 grams daily—“way too much,” says the University of California San Francisco. Cut back by eliminating common offenders: sugary beverages such as soda, alcoholic mixed drinks (watch alcohol calories in general), and fruit juice; energy and sports drinks, unless diluted or following an intense workout (preferably without food dyes); and low-quality breakfast/snack and protein bars (check the labels for ingredients). MORE WATER Instead of sweetened beverages, drink more water which is the only true thirst quencher. Moreover, often when we think we’re hungry, we’re thirsty. When we’re not getting enough water, the body can confuse hunger with thirst. Consider green tea. Studies show that three to five cups daily of green tea can augment weight loss due to its high polyphenol

antioxidant content. (Be sure to let the tea leaves/bag steep for five minutes to maximize polyphenol content.) Because green tea doesn’t dehydrate, it can be drunk in place of the equivalent volume of water. EAT MORE (HEALTHY) FATS, AND FIBER Fats provide greater satiety that can prevent overeating. Healthy monounsaturated sources are avocados and olives/olive oil (be wary of using too much oil), while healthy polyunsaturated choices are salmon, sardines, and nuts. Similarly, eating whole fruit and fibrous vegetables (including soups), whole versus refined grains, as well as a protein with each meal, can suppress appetite for junk foods. CONSISTENT, MINDFUL EATING Eating at regular times allows for proper digestion and a healthy colon. Dinner should be the last meal of the day, ideally 8-12 hours from breakfast and no less than two to three hours from bedtime. Experts suggest eating any dessert shortly after supper, then brushing one’s teeth as a reminder not to eat anything more. At the same time, focusing on the meal and not engaging in any other task can help avoid overeating, as can eating slowly to prevent spikes in blood sugar/insulin hormone and allow the stomach time to communicate satiety to the brain. SLEEP MORE By sleeping at least seven hours, stress hormones that can make it difficult to lose weight are kept at bay. At the same time, less time awake means less time to eat. EVERY STEP COUNTS Simple examples of ways to increase physical activity are parking farther away, taking the stairs, pacing while on the phone, and wearing a pedometer with a goal of 10,000 steps per day. Regarding structured exercise, for those motivated, the best type is the one you enjoy most and will do. Just 100 calories avoided or expended each day with these simple behaviors could add up to double-digit weight loss by this time next year. Notably, a study in the British Medical Journal found that among 60,000 people, three behaviors were associated with lower

obesity incidence and leaner waistlines: a slower eating pace, no after-dinner snacks, and not eating within two hours of bedtime.5 BY THE NUMBERS While experts say slow weight loss tends to be more permanent, a more structured approach may be desired by those with less patience and greater weight loss needs. Carson Chow, Ph.D. and Kevin Hall, Ph.D., both senior investigators in the mathematical biology section at the NIDDK, devised a novel approach to determining optimal caloric intake with a simple online calculator called the Body Weight Planner.6 Incorporating complex mathematical data, the BWP can enable a more precise determination of how much to scale back on portions—without giving up one’s favorite foods. In describing the views of Chow and Hall, dietician Denise Webb, PhD, RD writes: “Both Chow and Hall believe that taking active control of food consumption may be required to limit the long-term increase in energy intake that typically occurs, especially in the face of the dramatic rise in availability and marketing of highly palatable, convenient, inexpensive, and energy-dense foods.”7 Though the BWP has been “validated repeatedly,” weight loss via the tool is still a slow process and requires staying power, say the researchers, especially with a sedentary lifestyle. Espoused by experts like P.K. Newby, ScD, MPH, MS of Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, author of Food and Nutrition: What Everyone Needs to Know®, a plant-based diet is fundamental to good health—a conclusion based on thousands of studies. Furthermore, a plant-based Mediterranean diet has been shown effective for weight loss when calories are controlled. If one’s preferred foods are calorically dense (pizza, for instance), one or two “cheat” meals per week in which one may go beyond allotted daily calories can be advantageous, not just for maintaining motivated but also for keeping metabolism from slowing. (Or, adjust for the increase by eating less at other meals.) It’s important to use the BWP to

BASIC MENU (1,500-CALORIES) BREAKFAST (about 350 calories) • Delicious morning smoothie: 8 oz. chilled black coffee, one medium banana, six medium organic strawberries, ½-avocado, one scoop organic chocolate- or vanilla-flavored whey protein, ice (blend for 15-30s.)

MID-AFTERNOON SNACK (about 150 calories) • 6 oz. plain low-fat yogurt with a handful of fresh blueberries DINNER (about 420 calories) • Baked fish, poultry or lean red meat (example 4 oz. salmon; prepared with seasonings) • One medium baked sweet potato (eat with skin) • 1 cup steamed broccoli • 1 cup steamed green beans

LUNCH (about 590 calories) • 2 cups simple green lettuce with tomato, onion and green pepper, topped with ½-cup dark red kidney beans and ½-chicken breast • 2 tbsp. olive oil with red wine vinegar • ½- 6-inch whole wheat pita bread

reassess calorie needs as one’s lifestyle changes (example, physical activity level increases or decreases). The BWP indicates a maintenance caloric intake once a target weight has been achieved. STAYING ON TRACK Certainly, eating can be a social occasion, and life often gets in the way. Nevertheless, a degree of self-restraint is part and parcel to a healthy lifestyle. What are some ways to better self-discipline in a society of abundance? ENVIRONMENTAL (STIMULUS) CONTROLS Removing sources of temptation is essential, instead of stocking one’s pantry with healthy foods. When eating out, avoid all-youcan-eat restaurants or eat a protein snack beforehand. When at a buffet party, or in any eating situation, it’s advisable to wait about 20 minutes and drink water before considering seconds for satiety signals to reach the brain. WRITING IT DOWN Keeping a food journal, even if just temporarily, can truly help in acknowledging one’s actual intake. Today, apps such as MyFitnessPal can make the process easier by scanning the barcode of foods into one’s phone.

FEEDING THE HUNGRY Helping those without enough could serve to keep the giver grounded through better self-awareness of overindulgence. If you do go off track, it’s important not to get discouraged. For many trying to form new health habits, recidivism is cyclical as they journey through stages of behavior change (pre-contemplation contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance). With perseverance, a terminal point is eventually reached in which a healthy habit becomes cemented into the psyche and relapsing wanes. If weight loss goals aren’t being met, however, it’s wise to seek counseling from a registered dietician or other healthcare professional. OPEN TO INFLUENCE BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

I

magine you need changes from your spouse or partner, such as spending more time together or eliminating an annoying habit; how wonderful it would be if a simple request would result in a reply, “Of course, if it would make you more comfortable,” followed by the desired change in behavior. Given this humorous anecdote, it begs the question, what does it take to influence your partner? Powerful people are considered influential, and the amount of influence they have on others is a viable measure of their power. But, in a love relationship, influence functions in reverse. A partner’s willingness to be influenced without the use of power shows how important and loved the other is. Openness within a relationship is valuable as an expression of love, while power and force are harmful to love and connection. Partners often seek to change each other; vastly different from the beginning of most relationships when partners experience each other as nearly perfect. Over time, as a partner’s limitations and flaws are revealed, the need for growth becomes apparent. Each of us has a varying appetite for growth, but none of us can avoid change as expressed by a paraphrase of John Maxwell’s quote, “Change is constant, but growth is a choice.” With the passage of time, the cycling of the seasons along with aging, the partner’s needs will vary. Due to their differences, negotiating for change is ever-present and requires continuous adjusting and adapting. Whether partners may or may not influence each other will be determined if the constant and dynamic adjustments flow smoothly, rather than painful tension and friction.

To stay fresh and alive a love relationship must adapt to new circumstances. Fluid and flexible adjustments are only possible when partners are open to each other’s influences. Being flexible is a symptom of emotional health and being open is a requirement of love. As a tree flexible in high winds, it bends rather than break. With humankind, it is only when partners are soft and pliable with each other, do grow. Some partners are “yes” people and others are “no” people. The “yes’s” react to a request for changes in a positive way with the “No’s” respond by opposing changes and negating possibilities. To be open to a lover’s influence, a “no” response abruptly silences the music and halts the dance of love. A refusal to be influenced can be interpreted as a lack of love. For those plagued by this relationship dynamic, instead of “no,” starting the conversation or action, a better choice might be the compromise of a “maybe.” Choosing to think about a request or give a delayed response softens the exchange. This practice demonstrates greater openness to influence and the creation of new possibilities. A partner who always says “yes” may be thought of as a push-over who is weak and without self-esteem. Agreements are cheap and dissatisfying if they are consistently too easily achieved—balance is necessary. A well-negotiated change nourishes the growth of both partners. How partners attempt to influence each other may determine whether openness is offered. If a desire for change is forced

When partners are open to the other’s influence the dance of love may be beautiful. rather than requested—without choice— a reaction of resistance is likely. Force is the enemy of love and is best avoided; if a partner is flexible, force will never be necessary. When dealing with a chronically resistant, stubborn partner, and when attempts fail to influence, the other is tempted to explore indirect ways to create satisfaction. Pressure is necessary at times and better than force to obtain agreement, but it should be used with care. Trickery, manipulation, being covert and deceitful are tactics which may eventually attain a goal, but possess a danger of hurt, damaged trust and conflict. Being closed to influence will ultimately limit the relationship’s potential. Remaining open to a partner’s influence is a non-verbal expression that the other is vital. How do you influence your partner? Openness communicates that the partner is so significant that effort, accommodation, and even discomfort is acceptable for the other’s happiness and well-being. Relationships are about love; influence is the dance of love. When partners are open to the other’s influence the dance of love may be beautiful. Winter waves— an alternative to the slopes BY STEVEN CHAN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCKI SCHOTZ

NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | FEBRUARY 2019 53

n any given winter weekend, while most of civilization has headed to the mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire or Maine, a group of nonskiers pack duffle bags with wetsuits, hoods, gloves, boots, leashes, and boards then head to the beaches of Rhode Island. This posse can be found congregating on the sandy shores of Newport—as we discovered‚—while taking a drive, a few days before New Year’s 2019. We came upon a string of surfers, who appeared to be enjoying the unseasonably warm weather which was in stark contrast to the chill of the Atlantic. As they rode towards the shore, evidence of the water temperature 54 FEBRUARY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

was notable, as it was turning exposed skin bright red. As members of the group alternated with trips to and from the water; at times, it seemed that the frigid sea was able to take the breath from those who dare paddle out in search of an A-Frame. What makes Newport, an ideal location for this unique four-season sport is how the open ocean is unobstructed and free to rush to the shoreline; plus, the curvature of the landmass is positioned in a manner, allowing appreciative spectators to enjoy views from nearly every point along the beach or the famous Cliff Walk. According to the most seasoned waveriders, the seas between Narragansett and Newport are the best along the east coast; especially during surfing’s high-season, which is fall and winter. While the waters of Newport roll in all

year long, it’s when the weather roars, the journey to Rhode Island begins for these die-hards, willing to drive hours, for a few minutes of what they view as the “ultimate high.” Winter is the season when watchful eyes scan weather reports long before the public catches wind that something is brewing and we’re in the path of a nor’easter, soon to be slamming the coastline and churning up the tide. Winter storms are usually formed miles and hours away, often from the Great Lakes region or the south when air masses collide. These fronts can build over short periods and move quickly. Large and powerful weather masses are usually accompanied by strong winds, producing massive waves. The wave formation is a dramatic sight, and with rhythmic movement, it can be

It’s during this lead-up to a crescendo of wind swells and waves, spectators flock to Easton’s Beach (First Beach) for the best of thrills and spills performed by brave athletes. Countless bodies zip into neoprene, and like a pack of joyful seals, they head into the freezing water with air temps in single digits and a wind chill that drops the atmosphere well below zero. Almost immediately the saltwater splash begins to coat exposed hair, (mustache, eyebrows, eyelashes), along with unprotected skin. In seconds a layer of ice forms, causing a chill that can be

felt even by those sitting in a warm car and watching from afar. Adding to the difficulty of this extreme sport is a thick and sludgy combination of ice and water which forms in the shallows, creating a lasting memory of this special day at the beach. Noticeably, there is increased danger this time of the year, and surfing with friends is not only a smart decision but one that could save lives. Considering hypothermia is close at hand—as is frostbite—when the body’s temperature drops, lethargy soon takes over, making a swimmer’s reactions and cognitive skills much less responsive. This risk puts winter

surfing into the category of an expert’s sport; not one to be tested by a beginner. Plus, who but someone with experience would even consider such a challenge? In the event, you don’t find any Snow Owls at Gooseberry—and your back-up plan is to pick up a cup of hot chocolate or coffee afterward—we suggest a short ride to the beach, where you can enjoy a wonderful winter spectacle of those dedicated to the thrill of victory. When it comes to winter sports, few offer the ability to enjoy the competition in the comfort and warmth of your front row car seat. Akaw! H

First Steps to Creating Wealth and Keeping it Safe BY ROBERT WRIGHT

UNDERSTANDING MONEY AND PEOPLE

W

ealth is a relative term, and depending on whom you speak with, the degree to one’s appreciation of interpersonal relationships balanced with the acquisition of money and investing to reach financial satisfaction and security will vary based on an individuals’ belief system. It’s essential when creating wealth; you don’t allow it to interfere with personal bonds and vice versa. To allow one desire to control or supersede another will result in harm to both; leaving you shipwrecked. To maintain a healthy dichotomy between building wealth and maintaining strong relationships, you’ll need to pay strict attention to each element of this complicated equation. Having an awareness and the ability to a set of boundaries will help keep both objectives on course and provide equal footing. There is no value in stockpiling money if you don’t grow it too.

In this series, we focus on making, saving, and investing in the whole person. By no means does this advice assert or encourage the worship of money. The process we share is one based on a balance of spirituality, family, education, personal growth and wealth creation. It’s important not to lose sight of how powerful money can be and how quickly its hypnotic enticements swallow some people. WHY BECOME RICH?

For some, the ability to maintain a home and modest surroundings sufficiently meet their goals for providing comfort and security for them and their families. They don’t seek unending luxury or to create a financial legacy; for them, simple is better. Others have loftier goals and desire a lifestyle which will allow them greater opportunity and experiences which could be viewed as extravagant. But, regardless of who you resemble, with a proper plan and thoughtful allocation, there isn’t any reason why you will not

No, we’re not speaking about the rich kids, (or many adults) who live disbursement to disbursement, from the work and planning of previous generations; not that there is anything wrong with the concept. The trust we refer to is about one’s character. First, it’s important to understand the concept of loyalty and include it in your interactions with family, friends all others you meet. Being fair and considerate isn’t usually associated with wealth, but these attributes will ensure your satisfaction as you travel to success. If you lie, cheat or steal from a parent, sibling, mate, or anyone else for that matter, you’ll often do the same to yourself. Any effort to save and invest will be corrupted and destroyed because you won’t be true to yourself. If you skip on promises to others, you’ll find it quite easy to repeat the same flawed decisions when it comes to your plan to create wealth. In keeping with strict adherence to your map, once you decide you want to become rich, it only requires you to jump into the boat, (just a metaphor, don’t think about buying one), and begin your adventure. “To be an island lush and rich of fresh water, vegetation, fish, and natural resources, is worthless unless shared with those in need.”

Learn from experts; The Millionaire Next Door, by Thomas J. Stanley, Rich Dad, Poor Dad, by Robert Kiyosaki, and One Up on Wall Street, by Peter Lynch. These are your coaches and their advice as to how they create wealth. Each of them supplies the bricks for your foundation to building a $1 million portfolio—perhaps even more. Please, don’t buy these recommended books, instead, go to the library and borrow these guides to building and preserving wealth. (See you’ve already saved hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in just a couple of minutes). Here is a suggestion, begin your savings plan by putting $10 in an envelope each time you read a book about money. When you reach $100, keep 10, give 10 to someone in need, then put the remaining cash in a passbook savings account. This should be a new account that you never withdraw from, only deposit into. These and other readings are your weekly homework assignment; not only will you learn about the operation of money, but you’ll be able to share your newly acquired skills. It’s a variation on, See it— Do it—Teach it. These books will give you advice about money and investing, but more importantly, they dispel mistruths about how to get rich. Soon you will be able to identify those who are serious about investing and those pretending to be wealthy.

STEP TWO: DISCIPLINE, RESTRAINT, AND PURPOSE

The first two words in this subsection may be the most two feared words in the English language, accompanied by a third descriptive which requires an action easily pronounced, but difficult to practice. Most people balk at the thought of what they view as giving up their freedom; but, think about the person you know who has achieved financial freedom, the same as you wish to reach. Does lazy, unmotivated, listless, and constant justification for failure create the image you have for yourself? Doubtful. To reach the goal of building wealth comes from within and takes effort. Understand that you will face disappointment, discouragement, naysayers and those who will criticize you for being different than they; hardship is part of the journey you’ve selected, but worthwhile in the end. It’s vital during the initial stages of this plan to surround yourself with people who share the same goals. As a couple, you will need to be with someone who demonstrates similar values and respect for money. If your mate is a shopaholic or spends everything they make—living paycheck to paycheck, you’ll have two choices; stop reading and don’t waste your time and effort or reconsider your living situation. Attaining wealth is a partnership of two people working on the same plan, it will be impossible to have it any other way. To become truly wealthy, you will be required to exercise discipline in your spending habits, and show restraint; it’s time to hide the destroyers of financial security, (credit cards) and live on a cash-based system—at least for now. Take comfort that you won’t be the first person to anguish over the emotional twisting which comes when deciding whether to spend or save; we’ve all been through it—ask anyone with considerable wealth. Know you deserve great things and experiences, but also be conscious that you must submit to the reality that you’ll need to live below your means. You’ll no longer be able to use money as a tool for self-identification, in other words—showing off, and it won’t be available to treat psychological symptomology which is never relieved regardless of how much money you spend. The magic of this advice is that over time, the mindset of saving rather than spending will become innate—even habitual; soon you’ll find that making credible evaluations of purchases becomes second-nature. The three words at the beginning of this section do not occur naturally, realize they have learned behaviors which take practice and recall. If you want to become completely and financially independent, then tear-out this paragraph or write down this quote and put it in your wallet, “The pain of regret is far worse than the pain of discipline.” * This advice not only applies to manage your wealth—even if it’s just a few dollars, but it sets the course for a lifetime, whether it be at work, while in school, or a relationship. Anything worth achieving will take pain and sacrifice, and this is the reason why there is an imbalance between becoming rich and the alternative. Next month we look at lifestyle changes and a savings plan. H
