New Beginnings

Ahh,

September…seemingly known as a benchmark for embracing self-improvement and taking action, much of which allows for the transition into or out of a current situation or perhaps a relationship and pivoting to a new direction by an awakening of ambition, and the unquenchable thirst for adventure; it’s the month permitting us to succumb to the fascination and pent-up demand for introducing change into our lives.

The beginning of a new season is a model opportunity to connect with an innate need to embrace progress and expand our capacity for emotional, spiritual, and physical growth; it’s where our uniqueness becomes evident to others, radiating and warming like the rising sun on a cool fall morning; it’s intoxicating.

The eclipse of summer into autumn opens a window of insight; its shortening days indicate urgency while at the same time granting permission to reset priorities and take a leap of faith, leading to an escape from internal and external influences that limit or interfere with

personal development and objectives.

It’s customary to measure personal satisfaction and professional contentment this time of year; gripping an inventory of evaluative and intimate thoughts, we placed them in the reflection of our expectations. More often than not, the comparison yields incongruencies leading to blaring dissatisfaction and a desire for reconstruction.

At this time, the decision to embark on a life-changing journey, whether

compass navigates a path forward— or back if we fail to recognize illogical and self-destructive cognitions and behaviors within ourselves and others; when ignored, progress is forever stifled.

To fully understand personal success is to acknowledge what authentically delivers the multi-components of joy, expression, and consciousness; such awareness allows each of us to decide who is invited under our tent.

This month, our publications offer

it means taking flight or emotional risk, is unquestionably clear: the change we seek will result from the steps taken today.

glimmers of a ‘reboot;’ the pleasures associated with new adventures, and the elimination of faulty or toxic relationships that weigh heavily on our satisfaction.

EXTRAORDINARY

SOUTH DARTMOUTH ESTATE IS ON THE MARKET

Te number of people I’ve spoken to—over many years—about one particular home, sitting on the banks of a sparkling pond found in a peaceful and natural setting along Rock O’ Dundee Road is incomprehensible. Minutes from other desirable private community compounds, nestled amongst the many farms, and only minutes from the pristine coastline of Dartmouth, Massachusetts; conversations, regularly, included “I love that house” and “I wonder if it will ever be for sale?”

Of course, there were many variations to these discussions, yet on each occasion, the home was described as eloquent, impressive, luxurious, gorgeous, and stunning. I don’t recall anyone not fantasizing about living there; in fact, it could be the most prominent and appreciated property in the entire town.

The recent introduction announcing its availability is drawing interest far and wide—as it should, it is the ultimate prize in today’s modern world of luxe-living.

Set back from the road and accessible by a private drive, 180 Rock O’ Dundee Road is surrounded by old-growth and accented by manicured grounds, with its custom-designed highlights punctuated by its reflection from the waterfront pond; the Williamsburg-inspired oversized Cape effectuates feelings of pride and an embodiment of stately design and pedigree up close or from afar.

If there was ever a classic home with the ability to evoke the wow factor, this is the one!

For a family interested in moving to a peaceful retreat with beauty and tranquility, yet conveniently located near cultural events, fine dining and boutique shopping, this iconic home design with balance and perfection, will harmoniously meet all expectations.

Minutes from other desirable private community compounds, nestled amongst the many farms, and only minutes from the pristine coastline of Dartmouth, Massachusetts; conversations, regularly, included “I love that house” and “I wonder if it will ever be for sale?”

Its exterior boasts remarkable symmetry and taste, and whether it’s used as a summer residence or a primary domicile, the season’s rotational views will captivate and offer a pleasant diversion from routines.

Inside, master craftwork is found at every turn; custom built-in features, 9-foot ceilings, crown and dentil molding, pocket doors, rich maple flooring, and incredible floor-to-ceiling windows offer a striking appearance and light. As we soon enter the fall, the character of the home changes too; fireplace hearths add visible and physical warmth and comfort to the kitchen, sitting area, and formal living spaces, which are wide open and flowing with grace.

In demand by today’s home purchasers, there’s a primary bedroom on the first floor with an extension to a walkout, anchored by a three season sunroom. Additionally, located at the furthest corner of the home is a guest suite with a separate entrance, ideal for when family or friends arrive.

Other delightful features customarily found in homes of this caliber are included but are too numerous to mention. However, one crucial amenity worth noting is that the property has a backup propane generator to keep the power on regardless of the conditions.

With a floor plan offering 4,572 squarefeet of living space, entertaining will be high on everyone’s list. The surroundings are inviting, comfortable, and versatile, complimented with parking for up to 10 vehicles.

PERSONAL BRANDING

fter a quick review of social media platforms, it’s apparent we live in an era where remaining relevant to peers has replaced character and values; it has become an artificial artifact for personal health and satisfying emotional development, causing millions to seek the attention of others so they might fill a void. It’s also indicative of low self-esteem. In other words, some individuals project impressions that are incongruent with their true persona. Furthermore, the dichotomy of reality and fiction further contributes to an imbalance of the psyche, resulting in arduous effort spent on achieving a semblance of wholeness and authenticity where none lies.

Not to discredit the people who use these platforms to make money, much can be learned. However, what’s troubling is the carryover from sharing knowledge and experiences to creating identities built on hyperbole, falsifications, or plagiarized ideas,

concepts, and writings. Some will stoop to the most egregious acts, resulting in abject fraud and deception.

BAITING

The world is a difficult place to live. With the collapse of a moral code and a lack of character found in previous generations during the last few decades, we see a transition to self-centeredness, jealousy, and an uncontrollable need to be noticed; we have become a society of self-absorbed individuals. Honesty and integrity have been replaced with materialism and transactional interactions at every level.

The cycle trapping today’s youth is evident; they’re experiencing social situations where they get a taste of flexing their ‘mojo’ only to discover how hard it can be to achieve love, a career, or even hailing a taxi or getting an Uber to show up; everything has become a competition. And while the crowd bolsters the cry of being non-judgmental, nothing indicates the demise of a subculture of excess, status, and privilege. The pressure to stand

out is an enormous burden on all society.

It is impossible to become completely nonjudgmental; in the extreme, wouldn’t we have to eliminate co-op boards, private clubs, gated communities, and millions of other ‘closed’ events and locations to ensure equal access? By nature, we separate people into a class structure only to get on soapboxes to hypocritically complain about the result!

With an allowance of equity and equality for everyone, which is the goal, we see those behind the gates build their walls higher, construct layers of interference and further isolate from the public at large by exclusively congregating with their preapproved and vetted troops of likeness or hangerson. These actions result in cultural changes, whereas those watching become enthralled, viewing the lifestyle as an enticement to emulate the same behaviors and attitudes.

works to the benefit of those who understand its use.

The first question to answer is, “How does one stay relevant?”

It’s hilarious; we’re witnessing a phenomenon where everyone is demanding more than their ‘15 minutes of fame.’

WHAT’S YOUR REALITY?

Differences and impressions are made between people in a split second; you can thank our prehistoric ancestors and the need for the fight or flight reaction that kept them alive and continues to protect us all—today, we refer to it as intuition.

For our purposes, we’re going to get a bit more specific and stick to contemporary lifestyles and how personal branding

To begin with, you need to be motivated; it’s not for the lazy or those who believe ‘they are who they are’ and don’t care about personal improvement. It’s rather unfortunate because, over time, these same people could face a severe lack of self-esteem by making comparisons of themselves to others, finding that tinges of jealousy and contempt follow. Often unrecognized, they criticize, find fault, and withdraw, or they substitute substance with material things they believe will cover up their depth of insecurities. These behaviors aren’t one-off events; instead, they progress over time and contaminate the personality of the individual and their relationships.

Everyone has an ability or talent that is unique to them; what’s necessary is to distinguish and develop the traits that make you immediately recognizable and viewed as ‘high-value.’

Below, we’ve taken the fundamental elements of how businesses position themselves and apply language to meet their objectives; you can follow the same recipe and create a personal brand for today’s race to the top.

Parity. Even taking everyone as equal, we still make decisions as to the person who best meets our needs; in all matters, judgment occurs on appearances—at least at the beginning stages of an interaction. Such an inventory includes handsomeness, beauty, age, size, personality, and IQ—both intellect and social, plus financial status.

On most accounts, the equality between products or services also applies to people and their social environments: the public, by large, are like milk and bread, relatively mundane in their daily routines. However, when a decision needs to be made about a person, for whatever reason, even the

When people come up to you and start asking who you are and want to get to know you, or they purposely come up to you and pay compliments. It’s the result of creating a personal brand.

slightest differences are shown in terms of presentation (how they are dressed), perceived value and the potential to meet success will play a significant role in a final selection process. In the end, it comes down to winning or being looked over—life can be cruel.

Novelty. With choices abound and so many racing to the finish line, socially and professionally, the goals are always the same: to be successful in all endeavors. A person who appears with the ‘sameness’ of all others is categorized as subpar-certainly, not a standout, and often overlooked. Those who are innovative and understand the principles of enhancing their assets might not look like the one percent that frequently get ahead, but they do move close enough to the front of the line to be considered for the role or position they desire. Everyone has an ability or talent that is unique to them; what’s necessary is to distinguish and develop the traits that make you immediately recognizable and viewed as ‘high-value.’

Scaling and Positioning. This concept is related to value propositions and the effort to become desirable. Relevance is not merely shining today but well into the future. At the same time, branding yourself is a continuum. For example, have you reflected on the last 10-20 years and cringed when you viewed old photos or thought of the music you listened to? It’s a good bet you’ve made remarkable changes in your style of clothing and possibly taste when making choices. The continuation and development of education, personality, goals, and social skills will assist in your relevancy. Too often, fixation with a particular era leaves people

frozen and unable to advance in mind and body.

Tradition. Don’t change what works; there is nothing wrong with holding on to time-tested beliefs, style, and uncompromised values. Don’t be confused by pop culture, which is known for reinventing everything for the sake of disruption. Chivalry has always had its place; politeness and respect for others never go out of style; yet, we are surrounded by anger, hostility, rudeness, and self-centeredness that don’t serve a purpose except to ostracize.

Some have blamed COVID and the extent of its role in the ‘desocialization’ of America. But this isn’t an accurate assessment; by now, we should have adapted to the fallout. What appears to be the motive behind the ‘me, me, me’ mentality is a disconnection to civility with a replacement of selfishness, narcissism, and antisocial personalities. It’s an assessment, not a net to encompass any generation; however, it illustrates a trend that has been ramping up for a while.

Making change and following a path to success requires an understanding of one’s objectives, enjoying the satisfaction of achieving results, and the thirst to continue on a quest. Acceptance can be deceiving; winning once and living off the laurels is a zero-sum game; what needs to follow is a commitment to maintaining a lifestyle and presenting a consistent and polished look, always fitting to your environment and the tone of your circle.

Here are some quick tips to keep you focused and growing in the right direction.

n Read often and as much as possible; not only what you enjoy, that’s preaching from the choir; focus on opposing thoughts and theories. Being challenged by what you may disagree with will open your mind to critical thinking and make you an incredible conversationalist who can argue all points of view. Along with this new talent, you’ll become more tolerant and make more friends. You don’t have to bend your values, but developing rational and logical arguments make you look more intelligent.

n Be natural; let your kindness flow; project both verbally and through the use of body language and cues. Learn how to use subtle gestures, speech, and eye contact that will lift you to the next level of interpersonal interactions with everyone you meet.

n Take risks; this doesn’t mean facing physical harm or endangering yourself, but it might include putting yourself out there emotionally. Test your ability to win people over and get to places that might have been off-limits to you in the past. As it was explained to me, ‘Play host to the world.’

n Be kind, quiet, and listen; power comes from control and tolerance. A raised voice escalates a situation while remaining calm creates control. If practiced regularly, you will quickly see the results and become addicted to always being the ‘adult in the room’ and in charge of every situation.

n Walk with determination and purpose; show respect to every person regardless of their station; don’t criticize others; instead, find something redeemable in every person and situation.

n Dress the part; don’t become the wallpaper. There’s nothing so satisfying as being recognized by others, especially when you don’t know them. What will notify you once you’ve achieved this status? When people come up to you and ask who you are and want to know you, or they purposefully pick you out of a crowd and pay compliments. It’s the result of creating a personal brand. When you focus on yourself, personal attributes begin to form an experience around you; your actions will bring attention, eliminating the need to find it.

However, beware, envy reins and your newly found popularity can induce the opposite results, causing those with low selfesteem to target anyone they feel inferior to—add alcohol to the mix, and an encounter can quickly go downhill. Word of advice: keep your eyes and ears open.

From experience, be assured you’ll face a situation—perhaps more than once; the potential is always there, usually when you least expect it to happen. It’s customary for these types of people to at first provoke or get angry; their goal is to get a reaction that they can play off. To gain back control, stay calm, use a low voice or don’t respond, and excuse yourself from the encounter. Keep your head raised with pride (it’s the best revenge) and ignore further interaction. What happens typically in social settings (be warned—not in barrooms—that’s a different article) is that the villain, as others will see him, tends to grow quiet and grumble while facing the reality you disarmed them, and they lost the battle. Their anti-social behavior will have dissolved any credibility they might have had while, conversely, strengthening your status.

Go forward, go strong. H

How To Identify & Resolve Internal Conflict

What is this unbearable hindrance that interferes with your zest for living? Why does a dark cloud hang over your head during the day and haunt dreams at night? For many, the rumination surrounding unresolved problems and decisions can become a living hell, to the point of causing chronic sadness.

But don’t lose hope; you’re not alone; everyone falls into the trap of insecurity and disconnection, it’s the ‘Internal Conflict’ associated with an attachment style formed during early childhood that stimulates a portfolio of reactions.

It’s expected that, at times, we will be confused or uncertain as to how to react or respond in an effort to eliminate painful thoughts and feelings; however, relying on the repetitiveness of self-examination of faulty interpreted facts rather than employing practical and effective emotive problem-solving skills, aren’t the solution.

TAKING ACTION

The first step to alleviate feelings that accompany cognitive dissonance and the torment of dueling thoughts, beliefs, or values is to identify the person or event that is causing you the emotional discomfort, or pinpoint why you fear an uncertain outcome. It’s also important to be aware of conflicts attached to feelings of hurt, anger, fear, confusion, lust, or heartache. There are times when our desires oppose beliefs or rules instilled in us during early childhood development.

Often, our values may also be influenced by the acculturation of generational and societal expectations and customs.

Other factors related to Internal Conflict occur when we want something opposed to what has been instilled into our personalities as expected or appropriate. In other cases, hurt or what could become a negative outcome is attached to the actions of others, causing an abdication of our responsibility to respond in our best interest; we, without realizing it, hand over power and control to others within the confines of employment, family attachments, or personal relationships.

The repetition of unresolved conflict, (dropping in and out of dysfunctional or toxic connections) can cause ongoing misery because emotional wounds remain open and painful—never allowed to heal.

Primarily, five emotional traits or actions that prevent a person from making and sticking to a decision that would resolve their Internal Conflict include:

n Not trusting their logic or intuition

n Putting off a decision because they realize a potential outcome

n Placing unnecessary value on the opinion of others

n Fear of not being able keep with a decision

n Low self-esteem or making comparisons to others

To stop the never-ending progression of Internal Conflict, it’s necessary to cease being at war with yourself. You can want something to take place, but when the dynamic becomes unachievable or repetitive without resolve (on/off/on/off), little can be done to repair what wasn’t supposed to be in the first place.

Here are some tips to initiate change and enjoy the freedom of taking back control of your internal voice and feelings.

n Pinpoint and describe the person or event that’s causing the problem, then list the specific reasons for the discord as well as your response and feelings each time contention occurs.

n Consider your needs and values, then decide if the direction you’re moving towards is satisfying, fulfilling, and your longterm goals will be met.

n Imagine what your life would be like if you didn’t have to suffer through the siege of emotions and false hope of satisfaction.

n Consider those you think you love, trust, or admire but seem to cause you pain. Once identified, ask yourself if they serve as a facsimile and if it’s been you who has projected characteristics upon them that you wish for in an ideal person. The same goes for expectations; if someone continuously disappoints, likely, they aren’t who you think or want them to be.

n Eliminate shame and guilt from your life—it’s not worth it; stop amplifying your self-doubt.

In the end, no one can fix another; it’s far better to define what it will take to make improvements in one’s self. Be patient and seek social avenues to fulfill a need for human interaction; take charge of creating a new vision and share your light with those who truly appreciate you.

The journey may appear complicated, but it’s a worthwhile effort. H

CUFFING

Leaving The Summer Fling, Just In Time To Fall In Love—Well, Almost!

For those unfamiliar with the term ‘Cuffing,’ allow us to share a few tips as the season begins. Simply stated, it’s a modern-day phenomenon where people come off a hangover from a summer relationship and decide to strategize a plan that won’t leave them facing the cold winter months and upcoming holidays without a partner.

As fall is gently delivered to the northeast and the air chills, our primal instincts kick in, arousal accompanied by an incessant need for short-term passion soon appears; suddenly, our synapses light up and send messages targeting our consciousness that it’s time to seek companionship, a warm body, and a steady

hookup. Much like a hibernation, we hunker down, but without the long rest.

Unofficially, the hunt begins as early as September 1. During this time, social scenes resemble a demilitarization zone; caution, alertness, and a watchful eye are activated in preparation for selecting a winter mate. Few will actually stalk their prey (a new partner) since there are 30 days of gorgeous weather remaining (and 22 days of summer), but don’t be misled; those who are single have their radar tracking every movement of a potential partner—their eyes wide open!

With a goal of getting into a semi-secure relationship for both holiday fun and emotional connection during the dark and

dreary months of winter, singles often begin with the intention of a short-term arrangement that allows passage through Halloween and Thanksgiving—possibly to Christmas and other like celebrations. Such a run fulfills the need to present a new love interest to friends and family so they don’t appear to be single and unwanted. Plus, if they make it until the end of the year, the following three months will breeze by.

At the same time, many unattached men and women use this opportunity to test compatibility in the hope of landing a long-term relationship; given that the time between October and March is significant, there’s no need to rush to evaluate and predict a relationship’s potential. Plus, regardless of the outcome, there’s always the opportunity to bail and begin the process for yet another summer fling in April and May.

Uncertain of the benefits and liabilities of cuffing? Well, there are a few things to consider if you’re headed in that direction.

THE GOOD:

n It’s a sure way to avoid loneliness and pesky seasonal depression, which is commonplace when we lose an hour+ of daylight, leaving the nights to drag on for eternity

n The assurance and consistency of the famous ‘Netflix and chill’ hookup that will become readily available in the new cuffing relationship

n Cozying up to a warm body all night long is heavenly

n Long walks, hiking, skiing or riding, and winter events, along with social scenes, will keep you busy and distracted

n You’ll avoid the dreaded explanation as to why you’re single

THE BAD:

n With longer days in darkness and a tendency to spend less time outdoors, such closeness with a new person can exert unexpected tensions, leading to ‘couple-isolation’ resulting in less tolerance and shorter tempers

n Once you’re involved in what could be described as the long haul, it’s more difficult to jump ship and find a suitable partner on such short notice

n You’ll be expected to meet ‘their’ family over and over; no one really knows what that will yield, and depending on your new love’s agenda, you could end up being cast as the next husband or wifey

n Ghosting: there’s nothing worse than having a social support system terminate during a long winter—it sucks.

n Vulnerability: With less opportunity to venture out, there’s a greater chance of prolonged misery if things don’t go according to plan; you may have to live with your decision until spring

DISCLOSURE: The emotional and financial investment you make is not a guarantee of future success or returns.

Other factors to consider if you decide to join the cuffing movement include the benefits of human touch, especially with the lack of hormonal production because of decreases in physical activity and a lack of interpersonal interactions. Mood-enhancing body chemicals such as oxytocin and serotonin significantly decline during the darkest days—soon to come. Having the benefit of another person around can be very positive for one’s alertness and overall health.

Without question, some singles will miss the cuffing season because they’re still focused on extending their summer flings until it is too late to enter the search.

Without question, some singles will miss the cuffing season because they’re still focused on extending their summer flings until it is too late to enter the search. This results in many turning to online dating as a resource for seeking companionship. Studies show that frequency and activity markedly increased during the period of November-February, probably because September and October didn’t yield a ‘significant other.’

According to researchers, there are an estimated 117 million single people in the country (about 47 percent of the U.S. population). However, the caveat to these numbers is that a mere 32 percent of men and 28 percent of women report being single. As a result, finding a match or a soulmate isn’t as easy as one would believe. Culturally, dating has splintered into a multitude of factions, leaving many uncertain of the ‘new’ rules and protocols of relationships.

No one wants to be emotionally used or abused, so trust, and honesty of intentions are paramount regardless of the time of the year people meet. The mere fact that some singles will primarily be focused on a winter relationship as a placeholder until the sun returns in all its glory needs to be considered by both partners; the expiration date on the winter relationship might be something worth discussing early on so disappointment can be managed appropriately. Then there is the thought of early termination; this too can be devastating to a partner that develops a deep love connection, only to feel they were misled by months of affection and planning for the future.

Open communication is vital from the start; dating during the next few months has its own set of rules and parameters. As a matter of importance, when establishing a new relationship, being open when discussing each other’s expectations and clarifying boundaries is beneficial to both parties. And, if it appears likely exclusivity could develop between a couple, formulating some ‘rules of the road’ and discussing what a long-term relationship will look like when spring and summer arrive is also a good idea.

Our best advice is to tread lightly and have a great time! H

TA Berry Good Fruit

The Superfood Qualities of Açaí

he secret is out. Açaí (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) has been gaining in global popularity and shows no signs of abating. Native to the Amazonian rainforest, the little, deep-purple berry of the majestic açaí palm tree has become the fruit of affection for many health-conscious consumers and cafes, coveted for its dense nutritional profile and gastronomic versatility.

This once obscure food is now a cash crop; the market for açaí products is expected to grow by $1.49 billion between 2023 and 2028. The demand is being spurred, especially by 18- to 35-year-old women, and the popularity of appetizing açaí bowls, which go well with a side of social media. Emphasizing the fruit’s skin benefits,

sellers have been targeting this demographic with visually appealing social media campaigns.1

This growing trend has deep roots.

THE STORY BEHIND AÇAI

Açaí’s use can be traced to its humble beginnings as part of the diet and culture of the indigenous peoples of Brazil, where it has continued for thousands of years. The berry is said to have been discovered during a famine in which a mystical vision led a tribe to the berries high up in the tree canopy. Native communities still consume açaí for sustenance and medicine and the tree itself for raw material. The berries are crushed into a slurry and consumed in their pure state (no additives), typically as an accompaniment to meals. 2

Because açaí rapidly perishes and must be processed within 24 hours to preserve its integrity, public exposure wasn’t possible until 1970s technological advances. However, it wasn’t until the late 1980s that açaí took off commercially in Brazil when jiu-jitsu stars Hélio, and Carlos Gracie promoted the athletic benefits of the fruit, incorporating frozen pulp into the world’s first açaí bowls made with sweet guaraná syrup, other fresh fruits, and granola. 2

Today, açaí is a staple of Brazilian cuisine and culture and a symbol of national pride as its affinity spreads across the globe. 2

NUTRITIONAL BOUNTY

Açaí berries have a robust nutritional profile, rich in antioxidant vitamins, B vitamins, trace minerals, polyphenols (plant-based antioxidants), amino acids, and even small amounts of essential fatty acids in açaí berry seeds. Below is just a limited look at açaí’s broad nutrition in beverage form.3

EVIDENCE-BASED HEALTH BENEFITS

Though the National Center for Complimentary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says research on açaí’s health effects is lacking, studies point to the fruit’s antioxidant potential and its promise for reducing chronic inflammation that can lead to disease.5

ORAC score refers to a food’s “oxygen radical absorbance capacity.” This is a lab-derived estimate of a food’s total antioxidant capacity (TAC), or its ability to protect cells from oxidative damage by free radicals. Though the method has fallen from favor, açaí’s ORAC value has been measured at a remarkable 102,700 trolox equivalents per 100 grams versus 9,090 for cranberries, 4,669 for blueberries, and 4,302 for strawberries.4

In the journal Nutrients, Brazilian investigators critiqued over 100 studies on açaí’s reported health effects, the vast majority being preclinical studies involving cell cultures or live animals but 10 being clinical studies. Preclinical studies indicate açaí has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, protecting the heart and arteries, nervous system, stomach and intestines, and liver and kidneys while improving blood fats and glucose and showing anti-carcinogenic ability. Clinical studies (thus far) suggest açaí helps prevent prostate cancer, metabolic syndrome, and hearing dysfunctions such as tinnitus. Açaí also shows an ability to fight microbes and parasites. Products show no toxicity, strengthening their healthpromoting potential.6

The authors note their research is limited by the few clinical studies on direct human consumption, the many product types (juice, pulp, smoothies, capsules, etc.) and doses used, and often not knowing the nutritional composition of the product under study. But they conclude that “[d]ue to its medicinal properties and the absence of undesirable effects, açaí shows a promising future in health promotion and disease prevention, in addition to a vast economic potential in the food and cosmetic industries.”6

In support of this conclusion, Italian research points to açaí’s anti-aging potential. Using blood samples from healthy human volunteers, erythrocytes (red blood cells) exposed to oxidative stress that can lead to aging showed a restoration of proper structure and function when pre-treated with 0.5 or 10 micrograms/milliliter of freeze-dried açaí extract. Future research, they say, is needed to elucidate how this happens.7

Though research shows açaí extract and pulp may lower blood fats and sugar, NCCIH notes that no peer-reviewed studies show that açaí alone promotes weight loss.5

DRINK THE BERRY, EAT THE FRUIT, OR TAKE THE PILL?

Açaí commonly comes as juice, freeze-dried powder, frozen puree, and in pill form. Consumers are advised to use the form of açaí that best fits their needs. But purees will likely be best for making popular smoothies and açaí bowls, and food-based

products are generally a better choice in an unregulated açaí supplement industry.

However, not all açaí products are created equal, explains Renata Prates, CEO and co-founder of Tropical Açaí. Many products undergo adulteration during processing to make the berry more pleasant tasting, as people in the U.S. typically purchase “scoopable” açaí for easy mixing, and restaurants often buy this in bulk. Manufacturers frequently cut corners by inputting excessive fillers, sugars, and coloring (natural and artificial) at the expense of antioxidant benefits. When purchasing açaí, she recommends avoiding products with eight or more ingredients. Açaí should be a deep burgundy color, indicating a richness of antioxidants. Prates says Tropical Açaí earned the highest ORAC value versus four competitor brands in an independent analysis. 8

Natural açaí’s taste is described as earthy—a combination of blackberries and unsweetened chocolate. So, added sugar can be an issue with açaí products, of particular concern to people with diabetes or diagnosed as ‘borderline.’ As with açaí juice, for example, processing can reduce fiber content, and sugars can be added to enhance taste, leading to the risk of blood sugar spikes. Likewise, an açaí bowl can consist of a bottom layer of açai berry puree blended with soy milk and other fruits, topped with granola (often high in sugar), cut whole fruits, honey, and

coconut. Sugar and calories can quickly add up. Registered dietician, chef, and author Julie Harrington suggests just chopped nuts or chia seeds on top if the base of the bowl has already been sweetened with other fruit.9

As more people enjoy this new food trend, it’s important to remember a common mantra of dieticians: attaining optimal health and preventing disease comes from a person’s overall diet and eating patterns, focusing on variety and not any one food.5 H

LONG ISLAND’S NORTH FORK

The fall season on Long Island is one of the most romantic places you’ll ever visit!

Located on the eastern portion of the North Shore of the Long Island Fork, it’s one of the last remaining rural coastal communities on Long Island. It’s been designated as an American Viticultural Area for its rich lands suitable for growing wine grapes and home to massive farms producing exceptional harvests and other quality prized products.

Starting from Orient Point, where the Cross Sound Ferry delivers passengers to the Island, the trip is characterized as a journey of intense intimacy; the views and sea air instill fascination and intrigue during the 80-minute trip.

Upon exiting the dock and heading down Route 25, you’ll find a sign pointing to Greenport, a small harbor town with dozens of fine dining restaurants, boutiques, relaxing coffee shops, and a waterfront not to be missed. Be sure to stop at the 100-year-old Jess Owen Carousel House at Mitchell Park (villageofgreenport.org/ carousel-greenport-village.php). Open daily during the high season and on weekends the rest of the year, you don’t want to miss this enchanting place that will have you taking dozens of keepsake photos of each other and together!

regarded and considered gourmet and distinctive wine selections, which results in the cadre of vineyards holding themselves to the peak of standards. Also pleasant is the assurance of decorum and finesse exhibited by staff and practiced by guests; it’s a refreshing alternative.

A trip to the Island isn’t complete without a drive to Sag Harbor for a superb dinner after a soulful day playing on one of the luxurious Hampton beaches; you won’t be disappointed, but you will get hooked on their beauty.

The North Fork (NOFO) is home to well over 50 vineyards and wineries that will sweep over your senses; as the sun sets and the fire pits light up, the mood levitates to a crescendo of pleasures. With so many choices, there’s a level of quality in both dining options—many highly

Be sure to plan a shopping spree on your way back to the ferry after a long weekend, and bring a cooler to keep your awardwinning pie from the famous Briermere Farms found at 4414 Sound Avenue, Riverhead, NY (always a line, but worth the wait), chilled. Further down, you’ll find yourself stocking a wide variety of cheeses, just-picked produce, homemade jellies, breads, and flowers fit for a bride. And if you have a couple of hours to use up, try something new, jump on an old-fashioned hayride, and relive your youth!

The adage on the Island is, ‘There’s always the next ferry.’

NEW HAMPSHIRE’S WHITE MOUNTAINS

A long weekend in the Granite State is unduplicated, from extravagant elegance nestled in the wilderness at world-class resorts from another era to a trip to Littleton, where the vibe is a comingling of rustic New Hampshire charm fitting well with its newly acclaimed metro genre feel. Still in its original form, the old buildings, upscale shopping, restaurants, breweries, and walkability raise Littleton to the level of one of the “Best Main Streets In America.”

Boasting the most incredible waterfalls, ancient rock formations, deep sparkling pools—steps from the roadways, and rivers rushing by the Kancamagus Highway, these naturally occurring attractions are transforming; peace and relaxation can’t be fought off; it comes with the territory. Take a ride and discover a covered bridge, drive, or take a shuttle van to the peak of Mt. Washington for a one-of-a-kind view and experience above the treeline.

As you read this, the colors will have just begun to peek through the blanket of soon-to-disappear green, hinting at what’s to come. And there is no better place to hike and enjoy a dramatic vista than at the top of Bald Mountain, where you find and come to understand why this memorable location is called ‘Artist’s Bluff.’ It begins with a climb along the Loop Trail, with views of Echo Lake and Franconia Notch leading to the ledge. Offering great photoops and breathtaking panoramic views, the stillness and comfort of being removed from life’s hectic pace is beyond description. (Directions: I-93 Exit 34C, off Route 18 Franconia Notch, New Hampshire).

BOSTON

Sometimes, because the city is so close, we either ignore it for other journeys or revert to day-tripping, which is an impossible feat for satiating the need for the excitement and thrills Boston uniquely offers.

The small city is no longer; it has become a destination for domestic and international travelers for business, pleasure, or educational pursuits. With this massive appeal, the energy of Boston has changed dramatically over the last few years, making it more attractive to suburbanites of the region.

A stay at the Four Seasons adjacent to the Public Garden, The Mandarin OrientalBoston, featuring celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay’s Ramsay’s Kitchen, the iconic Ritz Carlton, Boston; or for that matter, any one of the many other top luxury home-awayfrom-home properties that will pamper and

impress you, are all incredible choices. Getting in and out of Boston offers challenges, but once you arrive, it’s easily navigated. A day beginning on historic Charles Street for a coffee and muffin emits a feeling of belonging to the neighborhood; it’s also a great starting point for checking out the small yet interesting shops that line the century-old sidewalks and flatland entrances to Beacon Hill.

The Public Garden is a beautiful oasis of green grass and aesthetically pleasurable surroundings; enhanced by the separation from concrete and vehicles, an enjoyable lazy afternoon in combination with a picnic lunch makes it an ideal place to chill and people watch. As for the afternoon, a stroll down fashion-famous Newbury Street and up Boylston will lead back to your hotel and allow you plenty of time to get ready for an evening of world-class dining.

Whether the plan is to visit the renowned dining room of Contessa or find delight at the city’s top-tier French restaurant Mistral’s, located in the chic South End, the grace and ambiance will cause pause and the thought, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

Beyond shopping and eating well, the cultural scene is enchanting; with museums, concerts, theater, the ballet, and so much more, it would take a couple of weeks to become completely enveloped in the lifestyle, leaving one alternative: make Boston a regularly scheduled event during the upcoming holidays. Whiskey company introduces their mistake!

Natterjack Irish Whiskey, a first of its kind, is an innovative whiskey that is based on the marriage of both Irish and American aging techniques. However, due to a production/ monitoring error, a batch of the new Whiskey was accidentally left in 46 of the producer’s Virgin American oak casks for an extra year. Natterjack ostensibly finishes its Irish Whiskey for a single year, but in this case, it remained contained for two.

“This was a very happy accident,” said Aidan Mehigan, founder and CEO of Natterjack Irish Whiskey. “After discovering the barrels, we opened one of them, and there was this burst of hickory BBQ and toasted walnut aromas. At first taste, we could tell right away that there was double the flavor and extract and powerful oak. That’s when we knew we had something special.”

According to Mehigan, The Mistake is aged first in ex-bourbon barrels for three and a half years; the liquid is finished in a Virgin American oak cask for two additional years using a char level of four.

On the nose, The Mistake releases aromas of hickory BBQ and toasted walnut, followed by roasted cinnamon and seared orange zest. Sweet almond then gives way to leather and grain or saddle and feed. Upon the first sip, you’ll taste vanilla bean on the forepalate, giving way to a blast of anise/licorice. Powerful oak is enhanced by warm molasses, toffee, and

just a slight hint of a granny smith apple. The finish is lovely, like a long hug from an old friend.

The Mistake features three delightful and memorable label designs and will only be available in limited quantities when purchased at shop.natterjack.com. Bottles will also be available at Total Wine & More and in Massachusetts later this year at fine wine and spirit retailers.

Natterjack Irish Whiskey informs us that The Mistake is exemplary for creating a customized Old Fashioned or Mint Julep; of course, many will appreciate its silky taste over rocks, while purists will prefer it neat, as to allow the full embodiment to come to fruition.
