t is satisfying to know that when you open the pages of our publications, you’ll find the best-in-class content, design, imagery, and sponsorship. Regardless of the feature or the business category found, all of these well-respected organizations and companies have reached a well-deserved pinnacle of success, and meet the highest standards, exemplified by a position in our magazines. Every month, we introduce a person or company that has been curated for our publications because they offer importance or service to our loyal readership. Not to sound supercilious, it should be comforting to know that we don’t impulsively accept all advertising solicited, or for that matter, features submitted for publication. For July, we are delighted to introduce a family-held business with a focus on décor and personalized services. Wilmot’s Decorating Center, with two locations—Middleboro and New Bedford—has proven to be the standard others are measured. With top brand names like Benjamin Moore, Shaw, and Mannington, their expertise in home improvement puts them in a category of excellence. Knowledgeable and trustworthy, the people who work there have a superior taste that matches their affable personalities. In the coming months, we hope to share their story by looking at how they approach customer challenges and objectives and provide quality products and unmatched assistance. Dovetailing with the topic of living spaces, we are thrilled to welcome a name very familiar in New England—Kinlin Grover Real Estate.

14 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

ooking beyond the current shade of political discourse, there seems to be mounting evidence of an improved economy. Every level of economic status has been enhanced during the last few years, beginning with changes in employee compensation, benefits, and family leaves, accompanied by the government funding start-up entrepreneurs, art organizations, and job-training programs. These fiscal improvements have accelerated the stock markets and now offers many lower and middle-class families financial opportunities not found before. Job creation is at an all-time high, and contrary to popular belief—this increase in productivity has a positive effect on wealth for everyone. Workers, through contributions made to 401(k) investments, 529 College Savings Plan for young families, IRA for those preparing to retire, and our senior population—who are divested into mutual funds or stock portfolios—are all benefiting from what some call a bad or stalled economy. Truth be told, if you are interested in finding work—even a career, never has there been more opportunity for entry into a welcoming work environment, offering quick advancement and fabulous incentives. While this growth is happening, if you watch or listen to the news, you’d probably believe we were in the middle of a monumental depression or worse, our country was on the verge of collapse—the warriors remain vigilant in preaching fear rather than prosperity. Such fear mongering is a real downer, especially for those who are enthusiastic of their newly launched business or for those enjoying opportunities that just weren’t available a few short years ago. As for student debt; who is to blame? No one is forced into educational enslavement or the financial bondage many students face as they accept loans that allowed them to attend universities

16 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

they could not afford—nevertheless, payback. Yes, we all want Ivy League credentials, but in the real world, the quick lesson to be learned is that there is no replacement for hard work. Entitlement at any level is wrong—plain and simple. No one can justify the inability to get a start on a productive and successful career path. It’s time, for some youths, to ignore the “you’re special” mantra, (heard for most of their lives), and realize this is a journey that takes a willingness to get their hands dirty, work long hours, and learn from and respect those with greater knowledge. We don’t intend to let these words run hollow, so this month we share a story that originated when we met a group of millennials in Franklin, New Hampshire. While passing through the decaying town, we found a group of energized and enthusiastic twenty and thirty-somethings who are making their mark, and showing others how being open to new ideas can make modern-day history. We move on to our décor section, where we discuss the great value and long-term appreciation of home furnishings and accessories. According to every expert we spoke to, the time to purchase antique, mid-century and collectibles is now! There hasn’t been such an opportune time to buy valuable (don’t be fearful) “possessions” at bargain prices. As one auctioneer said during a sale, “For a couple of thousand dollars, you can live like a king.” In some respects, these words ring true. After all the talk of hard work, we offer some easy to get to and inexpensive vacation options. Whether it’s an accumulation of day trips or a long weekend, we share some of the most enlightening and relaxing get-away locations that are affordable regardless of your budget. This month’s magazine might appear a bit lofty for some, while others will view our July issue as a roadmap to success; like all else in life, it’s up to you to see the glass half-empty or half-full. We wish you the best of luck in your travels and final destinations. H

THE MEDIA—besides providing news and insights to the public, delivers information which influences consumer decision-making.

partnering with a media company who understands the dynamics of social, cultural and influence marketing strategies is essential.

Properly placed messaging can appeal to a consumer’s value system and create a positive reaction to your advertising. Instilling a preference of your business, service, or organization over another, will cause subsequent contacts to compound, much like interest earned on a savings account.

Affluent lifestyle magazines offer a wide choice of multimedia platforms, ideally suited for creating influencemarketing programs and promotions, and are the best vehicles for what is known as “sticky messaging.”

estruction Brook Farm is a home for all occasions and seasons. This incredible one-of-akind country estate elevates luxury living to the highest level of prestige and comfort. Offering elegance and an oldworld experience, this class of grandeur is uniquely embedded in the Antebellum-style home. A magical location—steeped in history—the equestrian compound is positioned on 16-acres of privacy, visible only by invitation. The property is surrounded by manicured fields and meadows separated by ancient stone walls, and a patchwork of distinctive green color, lying as a gentle carpet around the threshold of the main house. With breathtaking views from all corners, the tranquility of the old-growth—consisting of tall pines and hardwoods and a picturesque apron of rolling hills and hundreds of acres of pristine conservation land, with miles upon miles of riding trails, offers a befitting separation from the stresses found beyond its gates. The manse, with its glorious white column façade, faces the entrance which is designed with a wraparound drive of traditional crushed stone, punctuated by a luscious green median which carves through the gentle slopes of the farm.

Missed Opportunities, Long-Term Regret BY LINDA BURTURM

hen some families hear the word heirloom, it conjures thoughts of a dusty bible, grandmother’s silver or a smoke-infused oil painting found over the fireplace. Others are inclined to consider the passing of family property on a different plane; possibly viewing the family estate or trust as important and in need of protecting. Regardless of one’s view, these massive collections have been passed down over decades—even centuries, and serve as a tradition and the act of preserving a legacy. For as long as motion pictures—followed by television—have entertained audiences, stories of dynasties who didn’t buy their furnishings, but inherited them, have intrigued the public. Opulent sound stages decorated in Medieval style or an Irish castle filled with Victorian artifacts, provide a setting and genre which draws large, curious audiences. The extravagant dining rooms with seating for twelve, a library steps away from where aperitifs are waiting by a roaring fire; and walls lined with leatherbound books, all create an ambiance which indicates either achievement or privilege of its inhabitants.

32 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Not all generations reject this portrayal of history, but many younger people, with limited knowledge or interest in the past, want nothing to do with continuing their heritage. For some uncanny reason, they find it easy to abhor tradition and customs, which are institutions of civilization. Today, vast family collections are being split apart—brought to market; hundreds of years of important collectibles, furniture, and museum-quality items are going to the auction block—leaving this to be the most advantageous time to purchase these types of items in nearly 100 years. Few commodities offer a buyer a chance to invest in a useable item which often appreciates, (antiques and collectible are vulnerable, and prices do fluctuate), and will outlast the purchaser. The old argument has been, it is better to buy a collectible with provenance than a cheap throw-away item. In the past few months some very important auctions have taken place; most recently, (June 8), Marion Antique Auction sold off hundreds of lots from a variety of estates with many items

selling for a fraction of what they would likely earn on the open world-wide market. A good example was an 18th Century English Marquetry Base Chest from an estate of notoriety, purchased for a mere $1500. With minimal effort, research indicates that the retail–resale value to collectors is estimated to be in the vicinity of $10,000-$14,000. In May, the William A. Smith Antique Auction House in New Hampshire had a sale that filled their showroom to maximum capacity. Jewelry and diamonds were reaching prices over $62,000 mesmerized the crowd, but at the same time, a Country Federal Tavern Table with the original top, circa 1800 sold for only $750; quite a bargain. In Philadelphia, Freeman’s Auctions sold off highly desirable art and other items from important foundations and individual estates in both April and May. Much that was sold dates back to the mid-18th Century, with many lots found in remarkable condition. One item that stands out is a George I Oak Dresser Base, with original hardware; the price; $750. This piece was expected

to bring thousands to the seller at the hammer. The new owner made a wise decision. The point of sharing these observations is that today, there is a lack of enthusiasm for what some review as relics of history. As for others, this is the low point of a cycle which will surely return to a glorious past with prices returning to all-time highs. Many experts we spoke to agree that fluctuation is expected and now is the time to purchase reasonably priced items that will enhance your living space. We see that Mid-Century as a strong choice with collectors and new homeowners. They are bidding up the prices for what was once considered “cheap” stylish furniture. Simultaneously, others are opting for the best quality in historical artifacts. Of course, with a never-ending supply of new art being produced, buyers can negotiate directly with makers. Regardless of your taste, if you’re not considering a new, (old) piece for your home today, you’ll probably pay much more for it if you wait. Now is the time to design your home’s interior to reflect your taste. H NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | JULY 2019 | 33

and through the narrow entrance of the island’s outer harbor. The views are overwhelmingly dramatic; from vessels running out to the coast’s famous fishing grounds, to sailors leisurely tacking across the stern of the Ferry, while balancing a Bloody-Mary. There’s a romanticism that fills the air and never leaves you. The Cuttyhunk Ferry accommodates bikes and coolers—if you plan to spend the day digging your toes into soft sand, or if you prefer to travel light, the main dock has plenty of delicious food options that will instill a feeling of belonging to the island community. There are very few places that resemble Cuttyhunk Island, with little changing over the decades; the Cuttyhunk Fishing Club continues to attract seasonal guests, the island is still dry, and at the end of the day as the Ferry leaves from another great day in the sun, residents, and tourists jump off the dock in celebration of another wonderful day on the Rock. here aren’t many people who know the island—customarily referred to as the Rock; for that matter, there is a significant number of folks who live a stone’s throw from Cuttyhunk and have never experienced the peace offered by the island from the rigors of daily life. The island isn’t the type of place that makes the news, although recently eighthgrade resident Gwen Lynch made national headlines when she graduated from the one-room schoolhouse and the only student in the tiny commencement. With about a hundred well-wishers in attendance, it was the kind of event that goes

Cuttyhunk is an unusual day, weekend, or extended type of vacation destination. You’ll never hear the word “resort” come up in conversations, but if you listen closely, the waves crashing on Barges Beach will lull you into a dreamy consciousness. Daily trips leave from the New Bedford Seaport aboard the Cuttyhunk Ferry. f you’re not aware of it by now, the tall building on the right, as you and thousands of others travel north—out of the Central Artery tunnel, and over the Zakim Bridge—is open. Yep, on Sunday, June 23, at 10:00 a.m., Wynn Resorts’ Encore Casino and Hotel began shuffling cards and spinning roulette wheels for the estimated million-plus people who will have visited the gambling floor by the time you read this announcement. Before you say you don’t care about this grand opening—know that it’s significantly contributing to the tax base. Jobs are falling off trees, and the number of people it will attract to the city is mind-blowing. Boston is already a huge draw to a national and international audience; but now, with the extravagance and excitement this $2.6 billion casino brings to the table, the historic city will never be the same. Sure, locals are going to dip a toe or two into the water, but the real test will be how much action Logan and the regional airports dish up when the high rollers start coming into town. With hotel rates starting at $650 per night and gourmet food choices that will rival many of Boston’s finest restaurants, it will be interesting to see what happens when the initial party ends and the hangover begins as the newness starts to dissipate; according to some in the media. Our money is on Wynn Resorts. Sure, they had some issues—what major corporation hasn’t? Can this resort pull bodies and chips from Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Western Mass., even put a stake into Atlantic City and free it from its misery? We'll see. WATCH WHY PHILADELPHIA? WHY NOT?

S

chool vacation doesn’t always have to mean unplugging the family from culture and learning. Summer can be more than days at the beach or short jaunts a few miles from home. During July and August, our myopic vision—due to habit or repetitiveness—limits growth and education. This topic has been researched; and it’s been found that keeping a student’s mind stimulated, throughout the weeks they are absent from class, results in their brain activity staying active; preventing them from going into a mental hibernation-type state, caused by inactivity. Okay, enough science; here are five good reasons you should try Philly. 1. Move Out of Routines. Kids need to be exposed to new places and social opportunities. By visiting Philadelphia, you’ll get their minds and eyes off electronics. With enough walking and visiting interesting attractions, their phones will run out of power so they won’t be able to text. Plus, kids are human, and to get them refocused, it may take a hands-on experience like Art Splash—Wednesday Nights at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, for you to create change. Who knows, you might not recognize them afterward. 2. History—Modern or Otherwise. Beyond Boston, few cities offer the depth of breadth this cradle of modern democracy showcases. With the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, American Revolutionary sites, and the all so famous steps Sylvester Stallone climbed in the major motion picture Rocky, there isn’t a day in this city you’ll find boring. 3. Shop, Shop, Shop. Philly is walkable. Hotels are located close to everything and so once you’re out the

38 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

door, its only minutes before you find a window of attraction. From major chains to small one-person operated start-ups, there are plenty of places that will have you looking for your size or something that will memorialize your trip. 4. Good Food is Good to Get. Philadelphia has a reputation for having some of the most eclectic and diverse dining options of any city of its kind. Outdoor cafes are abundant, with small and cool hipster meeting places dotting the cityscape. Elegant dining rooms with noted chefs are ready at the helm in the gourmet sector, and of course, the famous Reading Terminal Market— the country’s oldest continuously running farmers market—first opened in 1893, offers every cuisine imaginable; this is a must-see and do option that will keep everyone pleased, and their mouth’s filled. 5. Exercise. This vacation will keep everyone’s waistline intact or reduce it by an inch or two. There is nothing more enjoyable than burning calories and not realize it’s happening. Once you park, it’s time to walk, and being a walkable city, you’ll go for hours not realizing the miles you’ve covered. Just about everywhere is easily accessed by foot vs. by car. However; by the end of the day, you’ll be looking for a ride back to home base, so it might be a good idea to set up the Uber app just in case. From experience, Philly has plenty of eager drivers to get you where you’re going— around the clock. There are many hotel options at every price-point; the only thing left is for you to decide what date works best. A word of caution, there is so much to do in Philly, you may wish to plan on least 3-5 days of exploration with two days reserved for travel. H

Connecting the World Through Art by steven chan

40 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

T

he Philadelphia Museum of Art is a towering and impressive work of grand architectural achievement. Stoically, the connected three Greek-like temples, originally built in the early 20s, (with the assistance of chief designer Julian Abele, the first AfricanAmerican to graduate the University of Pennsylvania’s school of architecture and who found inspiration for these buildings while traveling overseas), sit elevated above incredible fountains and the entrance to the tree-lined and pedestrian-friendly Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The ornate colonnade of the buildings, surrounding what serves as an outdoor theater—a location which provides a gathering place for tourists and locals who entertain crowds on warm summer days.

From its massive staircase of stone, its the site where millions of tourists take photos of the view facing a tree line corridor to Logan Square and onto JFK Plaza; it’s an enchanting image most of us associate with historic Philadelphia. On any given day, thousands of domestic and international tourists, climb the stairway in anticipation of finding relief at the towering fountain in the shadow of the great structures. It is a welcomed pause before ascending a smaller and easy rise to a few more stairs which lead to the great hall of the museum. The vast collections of the PMA make it one of the largest art museums in the country and one of the most important; by far, it’s an institution that must be added to the list of those looking to expand their visits to exciting cultural-circuit expeditions. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | JULY 2019 | 41

The museum’s impressive holdings include; Renaissance, American, Impressionist, and Modern art, with standouts such as a Rogier van der Weyden’s Altarpiece, The Large Bathers by Cézanne, a room devoted to Philadelphia’s own Thomas Eakins, and Marcel Duchamp’s notorious mixed-media Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass) displayed exactly as the dada master installed it. Other collections found in the massive 633,825 square foot location include Asian art, with objects dating from the third Millennium B.C. to the present. Most notable are the ceramics, sculptures, paintings, and decorative objects, as well as a Japanese ceremonial teahouse, a Chinese palace hall, and a celebrated collection of Oriental carpets. The European collections include medieval sculpture, stained glass, and a 13th-century French cloister; masterpieces of Renaissance paintings; a suite of 18thcentury French interiors; and superb Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including celebrated masterpieces such as Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Cézanne’s Large Bathers. The American collections include extensive holdings of Pennsylvania German art; refined furniture and silver by early Philadelphia craftsmen; and the most important collection in the world of works by Philadelphia artist Thomas Eakins. Modern and Contemporary art collections begin with the early innovations of Picasso, Braque, Matisse, and Duchamp, and include great works of abstract expressionism, pop art, color field painting, and contemporary work. The thrill of being immersed into elements and artifacts can be told, but it takes the experience to fully absorb the essences of the importance this treasure offers the City of Philadelphia and all who visit. Food of the World by steven chan

HOLA. You may hear this greeting when you walk through the door of Alma de Cuba, which translates to “Soul of Cuba.” Located at 1623 Walnut Street in Philadelphia, the tall yellow building is easy to miss if you are looking for its understated sign, which is overpowered by commercialism that surrounds the oldworld restaurant. The establishment is a member of the group known as Starr, who operates a multitude of brands and locations in major US cities and Paris; they run the gamut of cuisines, venue-types and price points. Alma de Cuba is a favorite; each time I visit Philly, the people and food are never a disappointment. Being an upscale dining experience, the prices are in the high range, with their clientele having significant room on their credit cards to accommodate their choice.

When I have the pleasure of dining at Alma de Cuba, I noticed the staff exert extraordinary effort in meeting each guests expectations; carefully reviewing the menu, and offering suggestions based on clues shared in conversation, they utilize their vast experience when artfully pairing guests to choices. The menu is extensive and covers a wide range of Caribbeanstyle recipes and cooking methods. Beans and rice are favorites and accompany many of the meals. From the descriptions of exotic flavors, along with an eye on meals delivered to other tables, many diners end up over ordering because they don’t want to miss out on any of the options; I always ended up bringing lunch back to my suite. The list of enticing small plates is unique; ceviche, Smoked Chicken Croquetas, Smoked Wahoo Tacos, octopus, and Oxtail Bone Marrow Croquetas, are a few items. Also, on the menu and recommended, are any of the four types of empanadas which are delicate and flavorful. As you might imagine, the table fills quickly, and you may end up with a feast. Then there’s a long list of entrees including; Lechon Asado, (roasted pork), Short Rib Ropa Vieja, scallops, swordfish, goat and their signature dish, (highly recommended), Vaca Frita, which is slowly braised, then pan seared skirt steak, served with black beans, white rice, sliced avocado and tomato escabeche. What’s amazing is that after all of this indulgence, you will not be able to resist the temptation of the dessert menu. The melody of flavors romanticizes guests into ordering intriguing sweets; a Chocolate Cigar, Key Lime Flan, or perhaps a Vanilla Bean Pavlova, consisting of meringue, rum-soaked currants, roasted apples, red wine syrup, apple chips, and brown butter cinnamon ice cream. Yes, the options are unending, and your resilience will be upended. Alma de Cuba is high on the list of fine restaurants found in Philly and one you should be sure to visit. THE RE-BIRTH OF FRANKLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE BY ROBERT WRIGHT | IMAGES BY LUCKI SCHOTZ PHOTOGRAPHY

W

hen speaking to Marty Parichand, founder of Outdoor New England, all you need to do is say the words “whitewater,” and a grin comes to his face. His reaction is followed by words of enthusiasm, which is as contagious as the common cold, as he explains what the future holds for Franklin, New Hampshire. He and his business are located in a town with hills and rivers—the very same type that makes New Hampshire so attractive and appealing to outdoor enthusiasts and tourists. The difference is that Franklin faces serious social and economic challenges that won’t heal on their own. Known as The Three Rivers City, it is poor and small; residents are reported to have the lowest level of education, with their buildings possessing the highest levels of lead paint contamination. Noticeable and eerie is the cloud of despair which blankets Main Street. In the middle of the day, the only sight is a wandering dog—without a leash, and a lone man on a bench, yelling at speeders on the main throughway—all of whom attempt to beat the changing traffic light—the only one in town. It’s a disheartening view, making it clear that much needs to change; and soon. With the odds against town leaders and a new crop of business people, there’s a vision developing, accompanied by a desire for change. We found a small group determined to gamble their money and might against the tide, and invoke a new

44 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

perspective in handling their problems. Rather than accept the status quo, these roll-up-your-sleeve prospectors believe that they can effect change and move the city forward. Not long ago, it was decided that a small grassy area near Main Street, with access to a raging river current, would become the “cornerstone” of development for the old place. Mill City Park at Franklin Falls, with its run-down factories and mill buildings, was marked as the start of a new future. With the idea that ‘you need to look around and decide what assets you have,’ the movers and shakers saw beyond the drugs, poverty, and passing traffic. A crop of new entrepreneurs felt they could do better with what they have; and so, they looked to Concord and the federal government for much-needed grant money and other financial incentives to kick-start two essential projects. At the top of the city’s main drag is a rushing river that runs under an old railroad trestle, and the roadway. It’s also the spot where the curious find action on the water; here they view sportenthusiasts—braver than mostdrop their tiny whitewater kayaks into the drink, for a frantic ride of twists and turns down the treacherous river. A sight to see, considering this type of action is usually hidden deep in the wilderness and only recounted by images and tales shared by the diehards, it becomes clear that the potential of turning Franklin into a modern-day, all natural water park is within reach. What is in the works is a reconfigura-

tion of a sleepy place with a lot of rushing water. The goal is to invigorate and monetize what is found naturally and harness these treasures into a full-fledged attraction with, rentals, lessons, an observational walkway, camping, and a host of amenities which will bring thousands of new faces and many new businesses to Franklin. Additionally, a group known as PermaCityLife is in the process of converting three abandoned mill buildings into condos and retail spaces. With the water park soon to become viable, it’s expected to attract a large contingent of new residents and retailers. With the support of grants, fundraising, and investors with vision, the horizon looks bright for the people of the tiny city. The goal of this river-based utopia is not farfetched from the reality of being able to help all of the people who make it their home. The game plan is to improve life for all of its inhabitants—a fitting end-game, considering many behind the redevelopment efforts are fringe Millennials; the catalysts for change and a commitment to their community. There’s much to be accomplished, and with all eyes on Franklin and their progress over the next couple of years, any effort will likely be critiqued by the naysayers. Still, from what has already taken place in the planning and development stages, it is a good bet the people behind the ambitious project will make it happen and reestablish Franklin on the map, and make it an “All-New” New Hampshire tourist destination. Good luck. H

DOWNTON ABBEY: THE EXHIBITION OPENS IN BOSTON

I

n January 2018, we featured a story, America’s Favorite Family Happens to Be English; which detailed the arrival of an exhibit to New York as part of a tour planned for major cities throughout the US.

Through images and a narrative of the historical props, furnishings, and art reproductions, arranged in the interior of the defunct—but famous—Lee’s Art Shop, we shared how the setting made for the perfect backdrop so fans of the show and those interested, (even fascinated)

by the era could be engulfed by the authenticity of the presentation. For those unaware, we’re pleased to announce that after a run in Florida—as odd as that seems—Downton Abbey: The Exhibition has made its way to The Castle at Park Plaza in Boston and is scheduled to run through September 29, 2019. A fitting setting for the contents from the period-drama, it’s a delightful prelude to the planned release of the movie, Downton Abbey—We’ve Been Expecting You, set to be released in North America on September 20—this year. The recreation and profoundly accurate displays and accounts of how wealthy aristocrats lived in the later part of the 19th century, is astounding; coupled with such an appropriate building in old Boston, visitors will be swept back to the English countryside and lose sight of the fast pace of their lives. H For more information or to plan a visit go to downtonexhibition.com.

A New Asset to Mechanics Cooperative Bank

GENTLEMAN JACK

I

f you haven’t had the opportunity to view HBO’s new drama series, Gentleman Jack, please know you’re missing a most interesting history lesson. Set in 1832 in the hamlet of Halifax, West Yorkshire (England), the main character, Anne Lister (played by Suranne Jones), landowner and entrepreneur had set her sights on digging coal; the other

central theme of the program is that she is a lesbian. As Lister challenges societal norms of the day, viewers follow her as she charms young maidens; she is also a powerful figure when fighting male counterparts; all of whom believe a woman’s place is at home drawing or doing other things that keep them occupied.

But what is most startling and of great interest is that the storyline is based on the person—the real Anne Lister. In researching this unique woman, we learned that she kept remarkable details about her life, although the most intimate were coded, only to be deciphered sometime in the early part of the 20th century. Fascinating is how this incredible actress brings Lister to life while snaring the audience to sympathize with her many heartbreaks and personal tragedies. Lister is defiant; she’s not afraid to be viewed as counterculture—we learn that males had been hanged during this period for practicing this lifestyle—yet, Lister pays no attention to the potential harm she faces or to the snickering and harassment of townspeople. Our main character draws attention to herself by way of her dress code—always black—and this too makes her such a lovable actor. Extremely entertaining and enlightening to what life was like in jolly old England, we recommend signing onto HBO and catching up on season one—it’s not to be missed. H

The Board of Directors of Mechanics Cooperative Bank recently announced the appointment of Curtis W. McKinney to the Taunton based financial institution as Senior Vice President and Senior Lending Officer. In announcing the Bank’s selection, President and CEO Joseph T. Baptista, Jr. described Mr. McKinney as “A proven leader with great knowledge of the banking and lending industry, and we are confident he will be a great addition to the Mechanics Cooperative Bank team. His banking expertise, coupled with experience at both larger and smaller institutions, all around the country, will provide a great perspective on how to position our future lending growth. We are excited to have him on our team and welcome his input and guidance in plotting the future direction of our organization.” McKinney is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Business Administration and Finance and has amassed an impressive work history to the highest levels of advancements and professional recognition. Currently resides in Providence, McKinney is actively seeking opportunities to participate in the local non-profit community. Mechanics Cooperative Bank is committed to the communities they serve, accompanied by a mission of assisting local organizations. H

Equine Advocates’ 18th Annual Awards Dinner and Charity Auction Planned

YOU ONLY

I

t has been a while since we attended this summer event, but we have a special place in our hearts for the Equine Advocates organization of Chatham, New York. They generously save horses, ponies, and donkeys from abuse and torture, then give them a loving and caring home on a peaceful horse farm at the upper end of the Hudson Valley region. On Thursday, August 1, the non-profit group is holding a spectacular Gala at the Canfield Casino, in Saratoga Springs, New York. The event begins at 5:30 and will host cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction, an award presentation, live auction, dinner, and dancing. Casual elegance is the mood, and from our experience, this is the perfect event to anchor a short vacation in one of the most exciting equestrian centers in the northeast. This year the Equine Advocates will honor Staci Hancock, and present her their Equine Protection Award. As for the group’s Ellen & Herbert Moelis Equine Savior Award, the proud recipients for this year are Tracy and Carol Farmer. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Equine Advocates Horse Rescue & Sanctuary and Humane Educational Programs. H For additional information or to confirm a reservation, (by July 16 please), contact them at 518-392-0175.

teve Novick is an assembler which uses only a few pieces in his creations, which will be on view in “Approximation” at The Art Complex Museum beginning August 18 through November 10.. Novick collects his materials from thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets. He considers them vital to his work in which they are used to undertake a new form or realize the solution to a problem. He explains that the ideas behind his work tend to “gestate slowly.” Both simple and complex items are used. They are fitted together through “trial, error, and serendipity. Cleaning, polishing, and refinishing aside, virtually all objects and materials are used as they are found. Many of his influences, such as cartoons, folk art, surrealism, and minimalism, are evident in his straightforward use of materials, simplicity of form and sense of humor. A reception is scheduled for Sunday, September 15 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. at The Art Complex Museum in Duxbury. H

TROUBLE ON THE VERIZON?

BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, MED

WHY MANY SAY 5G BROADBAND COULD COST YOU YOUR HEALTH s humanity moves apace toward the Internet of Things (IoT) and the singularity of becoming better connected, the need for more powerful Wi-Fi is essential. Fifth generation (5G) wireless is hailed as one of the most revolutionary advances in technology. With utopian promises of self-driving cars, streaming virtual reality, and communicating with our appliances, 5G’s peak download speed is said to be about 20 times faster than the current 4G network. But there’s much controversy surrounding 5G going far beyond Chinese tech firm Huawei and its desire for global 5G dominance. Besides opening the door for Chinese-style mass surveillance, more unnecessary distraction (streaming virtual reality), and other Pandora’s boxes, several scientists are alarmed by the potential health effects of 5G radio frequency (RF) radiation from the vast array of cell towers to be needed. BAD VIBES

It’s understandable why many are apprehensive about RF radiation. Currently, 4G wireless consists of microwaves—up to a meter in length—delivered at a speed of one to five billion waves per second, or gigahertz/GHz, (hertz is the distance between wave crests). These waves can travel at great lengths and penetrate objects. Conversely, 5G utilizes much shorter wavelengths, (one to 10 millimeters) and broadcast frequencies of 24 to 90 GHz—nearly the same frequency as the US military’s crowd dispersal weapon, at 95 GHz.1, 2 60 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

These shorter waves do not travel as far and cannot pass through objects, but to compensate, it’s estimated that one mini cell tower will be necessary to service every two to eight houses. This combination of higher frequency and continuous close exposure, say, researchers, is a real cause for concern for all living things.1, 2 There is notable evidence that RF electromagnetic radiation can impact human health.1 One study looked at case histories of nearly 1,000 cancer patients living in Naila, Germany between 1994 and 2004 to see whether those proximate to cellular transmission towers were at greater risk of malignant brain tumors. The researchers found that between 1999 and 2004 (that is, after five or more years of exposure) patients living within 400 meters, or roughly 1,300 feet, of a cell tower, had three times the risk of cancer as those further removed. On average, patients became ill after eight years of exposure to low frequency radiation.3 In a 2018 study by Italy’s Ramazzini Institute, involving nearly 2,500 rats–the largest ever conducted on animals exposed to RF radiation—reported similar results to the German research. For 19 hours per day, the animals were exposed to RF radiation of 1.8 GHz at various signal strengths, simulating an electromagnetic field further away from a cell transmitter, or far-field exposure. It was found that male rats exposed to 50 volts per meter, (the highest dose), showed a significant increase in heart schwannomas (tumors), as well as an insignificant increase in malignant glial (brain) tumors in female rats.

Besides opening the door for

Chinese-style mass surveillance, more

unnecessary distraction (streaming virtual reality), and other Pandora’s boxes, several scientists are alarmed by the potential health effects of 5G radio frequency (RF) radiation from the vast array of cell towers to be needed.

The researchers noted the results are consistent with the National Institutes of Health study of near-field RF radiation on rats, with increased heart and brain tumor incidence and tumors of the same type as those seen in studies on cell phone users. They concluded that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) reconsider its stance on the cancercausing potential of RF radiation in people.4 The 2018 NIH study measured the effects of RF radiation similar to 2G and 3G cell phone technology. A rise in cancerous heart tumor incidence was seen in male rats, as well as brain and adrenal gland tumors.5 APPEAL TO REASON

Cindy Russell, MD, the Executive Director of Physicians for Safe Technology points to 5G’s unknowns in an article posted at the NIH’s National Library of Medicine.6 Russell notes the controversy that already exists over the health impact of 2G, 3G and 4G wireless, and that even less is known about the potential human and environmental effects of 5G. Many believe adding 5G to the current mix of lower frequency microwaves will cause damage to both physical and mental health. Moreover, with wireless technology’s ubiquity, there’s no longer a control group for measuring its effect. This lack of subjects is especially problematic, given all the other toxic environmental exposures and risky health behaviors that need to be factored. Plus, it will be many more years before the true health consequences will be made manifest. Another vocal opponent, Joel M. Moskowitz, Ph.D. (director of the Center for Family and Community Health at the University of California, Berkley School of Public Health) blogged about Electromagnetic Radiation Safety. In his blog, we learn that one of the world’s leading insurance providers, Swiss Re, rates 5G mobile networks as a “high impact” risk for the industry. In an excerpt from a report published in May 2019, the company writes 5G may affect casualty claims in more than three years.7, 8 Moskowitz also posted a bulletin by Russell explaining that 5G safety testing is outdated, based on heat (like a microwave oven) rather than current science of non-thermal biological effects.7 In an urgent “5G Appeal,” a consortium of European Union scientists and doctors are calling for a moratorium on 5G rollout due to “serious potential health effects.”9

Initially submitted to the European Commission in September of 2017, 235 EU doctors and scientists have signed on to the petition as of May 16, 2019. NOT ON THE SAME WAVELENGTH

Despite 5G’s unknowns and a conscientious minority warning that proper health testing should first be conducted, proponents claim the technology is safe. They say harmful ionizing radiation doesn’t occur at 70 GHz but at 2.4 million GHz, or much farther along the electromagnetic spectrum, and that the telecoms industry isn’t suppressing non-thermal cancer data on non-ionizing low-frequency radiation. Moreover, they report 5G waves cannot penetrate the body.10 5G STATUS

Though other industry experts have said the real benefits of 5G is low, and risks to public health and the environment high, the prospect of huge profits is irresistible.1 In the race against Huawei for market share, the Trump Administration has acquiesced to the FCC’s desire for rapid rollout. Said President Trump in an April 2019 White House press conference, “This is, to me, the future. It’s all about 5G now…And 5G’s a big deal, and that’s going to be there for a while. And at some point, we’ll be talking about number six…To accelerate and incentivize these investments, my administration is freeing up as much wireless spectrum as needed.”11 With the President’s blessing and Environmental Protection Agency’s effort to upgrade RF radiation safety standards defunded in 2014, there is nothing standing in the way of the technology. Verizon has been in stiff competition with other carriers to be the first on the block. The company plans 5G installation at 28 GHz in 20 major US cities this year, and nationwide expansion over the next several years.12 With a “small cell” tower in every neighborhood, we may soon find out the truth about 5G safety. intimacy

the language of

Empowerment BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

hen stressed or frustrated, a feeling many of us experience daily, negativity easily develops and unintentionally creeps into our speech. If in pain, many partners fall into negativity, even when they know that expressing themselves positively is more beneficial. Positive talk is easier to listen to; it feels better and is far more effective when teaming up to get things done. Positive language is more constructive and offers a multitude of pathways to success. More importantly, positive language supports and nourishes a loving connection. The most commonly cited relationship problem is communication. When a loving connection has broken, negative words fail in rebuilding a connection. When unresolved problems flare up, the inability to discover resolution can be traced to a breakdown in the partner’s verbal messaging. The underlying culprit is painful emotions which are easily expressed in a negative sense. Conversely, positive language has a unique quality and action which penetrates pain-based obstacles. Such meaningful and effective dialogue is always possible, but romantic partners must use it often if they are to strengthen their bond. Negative expressions push people away and prevent establishing closeness. As a self-protective mechanism, negativity builds isolation and impenetrable boundaries. Such speech can be useful if solitude 62 | JULY 2019 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

is needed, but it is a poor choice for connecting with an intimate partner. Positive and constructive problemsolving falls within the domain of healthy communication, while negativity expresses hurt, pain, and anger. Criticism, blame, and fault finding, all fall into the basket of negativity. It’s when we find ourselves engulfed by those who are constantly negative; we begin to find such chronically depressing talk to become emotionally draining. When couples fall into a rough patch, discomfort and dissatisfaction grow, along with their negativity. A vicious cycle begins to form where negativity follows hurt and leads to even greater pessimism, which creates even deeper pain. This repetitive response is a clear signal that problems are accumulating; it’s also a sign that one or both partners are experiencing distress. No amount of negativity will create a positive relationship; it is the language of empowerment that is positive and builds energy that is required to shift a romantic connection from troubled to healthy; from unhappy to satisfying. An empowered partner can express what he or she feels at any given time; with this comes both upbeat and unhelpful feelings. The most natural expression when venting frustration is about what the other partner is doing that is wrong; it focuses on the problem rather than naming a solution. Negative expressions point out the breakdown, the failure, the error of the relationship, as well as the partner’s

shortcomings. Thinking and speaking this way cultivates feelings of hopelessness and powerlessness, which pits partners against each other. This ongoing negativity directs energy away from solutions in favor of dwelling on the problem. With a focus on teamwork, we quickly learn that the essence of a successful love relationship begins with understanding and compliments. Partners working together for the common good energizes a bond through good communication, coordination, and synchronization. As a team, two partners work as one. For a relationship to be viable for the long-term, a couple must function as one when solving problems. Positive language is free of the words “no” and “not” as part of an effective problem-solving strategy. It greatly reduces the possibility of hurt or conflict escalation. Staying positive is also accomplished by keeping the focus in the present and singularly upon the current issue. Everything can be expressed positively by simply saying what is desired and searching for potential solutions. The use of positive language eases the path towards progress and success; it promotes a positive, loving connection by resolving problems that often divide the loving relationship.
