WELCOME

THANK A SPONSOR FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY

H

ello, and welcome to another wonderful month of knowledge, insight, and media expertise. During the last three years, especially over the past month, we’ve had the opportunity to watch—or avoid—the President and his crew do battle with Speaker of the House and the democrats. Planned by both parties, the effort to illuminate the political stage with theatrical antics has resulted in “we the people” being flooded with a yawning revelation that an accelerated leap to the bottom of disunity is progressing well. At best, we are in store for even more discourse through election day, and perhaps after the contested results are tallied—try to prepare in advance, the ride is just beginning. Also, adding monumental distractions to daily living is the fear that the coronavirus may visit a neighborhood like yours. However, if it doesn’t arrive at your doorstep, the knowledge that our country’s supply of medicines and a host of other vital products could be halted by the Chinese—will leave you feeling anxious and overwhelmed as well. Of course, let’s not forget a stock market that gyrates similar to a 1920s flapper. Up, down, and “living for the moment,” the markets are moving in a manner that 10 | MARCH 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

provokes lots of smiles and pleasantries, so long as the bulls continue to charge and push the bears aside. At this point, you may ask, “What does this have to do with me?” We’re glad you asked. With nerves of steel, each of us attempts to make our way to paradise, albeit, with disproportionate results. It seems that when we are trying to relax, the opposite occurs. Blame it on technology, the kids, or society; you won’t be wrong; all are the obvious culprits in stealing pieces of your solitude and peace. HERE IS WHERE WE COME INTO PLAY. We continuously monitor and survey our readership, and month after month, the feedback we receive is overwhelmingly positive. Often referred to as classy, beautiful, even gorgeous, our magazines are praised so often, the verbal compliments walk close to the line of “street harassment.” Kidding aside, our readers are very vocal in their approval of our content and delivery. Through tireless efforts to bring you complimentary copies month after month, combined with digital access regardless of how and when you wish to “pick us up,” it’s nice to know that when you can steal a few minutes from the noise of the day, our luxury magazines are

waiting patiently for your arrival. To our next thought, have you recently thanked our sponsors? Each advertiser found on our pages holds the responsibility of providing the public the opportunity to enjoy this unparalleled reading experience. They are keenly aware that their advertising not only promotes them but keeps our three publications free. If you were to analyze the platform, you’d learn that it is very unselfish for our sponsors to give readers quality and to show goodwill. If you find a need for a particular product or service or meet one of our loyal advertisers, please introduce yourself and make them aware that you appreciate their support of our publications. They work very hard and are the best in their respective businesses. For them, to learn how much their help is appreciated means that you’ll be able to pick up or read online your magazine of choice well into the future. In the event you do business with a company not found on our pages, make the recommendation to join us; not only will they begin a successful branding campaign, but they will be supporting the arts, literature, and health of their communities. Thank you for following us, and please enjoy our March 2020 issue. H

The Highway to Hell has No Exit

R

egardless of who you are, what you do for a living or your level of interest in Artificial Intelligence (AI), you should be concerned about its far-reaching potential, the harmful results that will follow, and the devastating outcome for a future generation. Obviously, there are great benefits derived from this new technology; however, it’s essential to recognize that AI is a sharp and dangerous double-edged sword. Now that we have crossed the threshold into Deep Learning—which removes human input to problem-solving equations—our society is forever changed, and our longterm existence remains in question. Don’t believe for a minute that machines are going to take over, no—that is a fantasy for the big screen; instead, we should be concerned with a single world-wide authoritarian state which will control information and knowledge. Our concerns should be laser-focused on the potential of a modern-day Star Chamber, a small and organized group of powerful and influential people working closely together so they may ensure absolute control over those they deem inferior, or at least consider them an operational element within their wheel of progress. They will preach freedom and goodwill 12 | MARCH 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

for the world while taking control of our lives; they will gain access and predictable power over human decision making—with an insignificant margin of error, only to manipulate large segments of daily activity for a host of motivations. We’re not fear-mongering, absolutely not, but humankind’s essences and its destiny should never have been controlled to the point of automation and predictability in the first place. There will come a time when rebellion will take on this fight, and resistance will unleash the chains placed on an individual’s freedom of choice and privacy. Unfortunately, civil unrest will move beyond anything we might compare it to, and more exceptional minds than ours will question the uncertainty of society’s future, but we do ask the question of why the Second Amendment is continually argued and fought over? Here are some facts that should cause pause; you are being followed, identified, and influenced by both the government and data collecting businesses. You are being used to influence others by the tasks you perform on your digital device, office computer, or laptop. When in public or shopping at any of the larger chain stores, your movements are being videotaped, along with precise data points which are extracted and time-stamped for security and marketing purposes. Your homes are

recording your voice and movements by security apparatus you invite in under the disguise of safety. And there is more; your unique behavior patterns are being compiled into cross-matching files, which will follow you for the remainder of your life, so that at any given time, your location, actions, and even state-of-mind can be determined without your knowledge. Does this sound like utopia, or does it scare the living hell out of you? We should become suspect and ponder these questions: Has anyone asked for my permission to gather behavioral insights into my personal life? Is my private data being sold without my knowledge? Is someone or something cross-checking my facial features, genetic material, social media postings, email dialogues, geotargeting data, financial records, and medical records, then creating a secret— but available—composite of me, and offered to the highest bidder? What does the unabashed invasion of your privacy look like; it is when events begin to dismantle your freedom of choice, when all information about you is shared without permission, and when your every movement is predictable. It is when this sea of emotional turmoil is stirred by processes outside of your control and credited to Deep Thinking AI, which is here to stay and grow more invasive.

Older adults who have had less face time on social media platforms are harder to track, and their lives will become unimportant since they are at the end of their life cycle. As for everyone else, they are surrounded by programs that monitor every keystroke, sites visited, and eavesdropping of conversations through invasive home monitoring systems. Regardless of how careful you are, no one is exempt from prying eyes and data collection mavens. We are all in the collection system, and irrespective of what you’re fed by the Wall Street titans, the information they’ve accumulated on you will continue to be collected and analyzed, it will remain permanently stored, frequently updated and always retrievable. The companies responsible for gathering this information are well ahead of government agencies in charge of its oversight. You may wonder why this is happening; for those who do ask the question, the answer is simple; control (under the guise of crime prevention) and greed (an obsession of accumulating vast amounts of wealth). These two variables go hand in hand, and it is what is driving 24-hour surveillance on society. An example of this is found in our political structure; it has turned into a club with a membership that is driven by power and control, a.k.a. money and laws; these are the pinnacles that drive unfathomable ambition. By now, everyone should realize that every move they make, whether inside their homes and every time they leave the house, is recorded. Neighbors have video doorbells; others have cameras. Just about anyone can tape you with a phone or with a drone, and with cities and towns setting up monitor devices on street poles and highways, and further enhanced by millions of close-circuit cameras attached to businesses that record inside their buildings and their perimeters, surveillance has become absolute in our lives. What is accomplished with this information? If you’re a bad guy and do a crime, the authorities will find you and take a sample of your DNA for good keeping. Then, by matching your mugshot,

fingerprints, and a genetic sample, they’ll have comprised a comprehensive profile just in case it’s required at a later date. For everyone else, the information collected is either being sold or hacked, then shared to hundreds—if not thousands of companies, who quietly and quickly build a profile that goes so deep, you wouldn’t recognize some of the data that describes your personality. Finally, the masterminds behind the search engines, social media channels, dating sites, along with every other location you believe is making your life more exciting or interesting, is gathering every micro-second of behavioral data you share online so that they—through AI—will be able to predict, with accuracy, your travels, likes and dislikes, bet on your choice of a mate, number of children you’ll have, your IQ, where you’ll live, how much money you’ll earn, the car you’ll drive—and when you will likely make the purchase, who you will vote for, and just about every thought you believe is your own. With this information, they will have attached a predictability scale that is easily updated once these things happen, they will then add it to your bio-social-physical profile. While this may sound like an impossible feat, the research taking place behind the ivy walls of universities and in labs is well beyond this layman’s best guess to what the future holds for the earth’s inhabitants. Using logic, does any sound mind honestly believe the horse isn’t out of the corral? According to a report in Forbes, “Rethinking Privacy for the AI Era,” March 2019, (interestingly the piece had no byline), a study conducted by Intouch International, found that close to 9 out of 10 American users of the internet are concerned about their privacy and security online. And, a whopping 67 percent of those polled are in support of stricter national privacy laws. What is causing the disconnect between the public’s thirst for immediate gratification for information and the sharing of personal data? Part of the equation is the complex and unresolved issue surrounding the granting of permission found when accessing websites.

As soon as legislation is passed, the social engineers are creating new user agreements that either force acceptance or make users quickly bypass long and complicated contracts for the use of a site. Without knowledge, many web-surfers are signing their privacy rights away and end up in massive databases. The concept of harnessing data isn’t new; and while, the English philosopher Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) is attributed to having prophesized, “Ipsa scientia potestas est” (knowledge is power), further research indicates that the original documented phrase “Knowledge is power,” was from Imam Ali (599-661 CE) in the 10th century. He is quoted as saying, “Knowledge is power, and it can command obedience. A man of knowledge during his lifetime can make people obey and follow him, and he is praised and venerated after his death. Remember that knowledge is a ruler, and wealth is its subject.” We, too, will have something relevant to say even if it was created by a machine for the good of our futures. H

Upon arrival, its circular drive to the entrance and views of solid old-growth, which wraps the perimeter at a distance, enhances the provenance of the compound. furnace, air conditioning, radiant heat, cable and highspeed internet, security system, surround sound, programmable sprinkler system, and a humidifier system. As for what you will find most alluring, are the magnificent interior details, albeit, too numerous to list. Country elegance and magnificent touches to the custom-built home reads like a wish-list so many of us have when dreaming about an ideal residence: mighty hearths create a feeling of unduplicated pleasure; stonework beginning at the mantles and rising to castle-high 28-foot ceilings, resilient red oak mortised tenon exposed beams creating a unique and intriguing genre; impressive, repurposed wormwood chestnut flooring establishes a platform for engaging in decorating and design; and this is just the beginning. A paragon of curated style and authenticity, the enormous eat-in kitchen has been tastefully designed with handmade cabinets, granite countertops, French terracotta floors, soapstone country sinks, a period (1903) Magee wood stove, restored and converted into a gas range, with electric ovens, a large built-in island, a European-type fireplace, French doors leading to a massive deck overlooking the enchanting terrace. And, just when it seems everything possible has been considered in appointing this space, high above the entrance hang dual brass ship lanterns, which add the perfect touch of genuineness. Off to the master suite; the over-sized room boasts a stunning cathedral ceiling, a walk-in closet, a loft, second-floor laundry, and adding to its luxury, the suite’s glassed-in shower includes a stone waterfall. Fit for a growing family or one who loves to gather for holidays and special occasions, the three additional bedrooms, and baths, located in a separate wing, afford privacy and quietness. Located on Vaughan Hill Road, in Rochester, the home could not have been built in a more convenient and beautiful setting. Nestled between Mattapoisett and Marion, it offers a wide choice

of equestrian sports facilities, an easy drive to yacht clubs, sandy beaches, private and public golf courses, and regional airports. This refined property is being offered at $1,995,000 and is represented by Erin Hovan, an experienced and knowledgeable real estate agent with Robert Paul Properties, located in Marion, Massachusetts. DESIGN

SENSE AND PERCEPTION TO DOMINATE THE 7TH ANNUAL BOSTON DESIGN WEEK SPECTACULAR Twelve Days of Conferences, Forums & Calendar Events to Encompass the Human Experience and Expand Our Understanding of Design and Creativity

26 | MARCH 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

SHOWTIME roducers Tony Fusco and Robert Four will present New England’s premier design and creative event of the year, with the introduction of their 7th Annual Boston Design Week Festival. The duo, credited for hosting thousands upon thousands of visitors each year, is responsible for its popularity and a stellar reputation. The event has grown exponentially by the fact the show is a magnet for attracting the best, brightest, and most creative artists and designers to the region and grows each year.

P

Programs will explore the city’s importance as a hub for creative endeavors and its prevalence for understanding how we interact with design in our daily lives and its transition to the communities where we live. There will be in-depth presentations on increasing awareness, accompanied by a conversation about improving accessibility to the public. Design Week 2020 activities and World Design Weeks Forum are easily accessible by visiting the websites below. There are many free events, although it is highly recommended that reservations be made since demand will be high. The 14-day exhibition will encompass forum panels, presentations, exclusive tours, VIP events, a Gala, award ceremony, and optional excursions. For everything you need to learn about this year’s exciting events, visit BostonDesignWeek.com, email BostonDesignWeek@fuscofour.com or call 617.363.0405.

Widely anticipated by attendees traveling both domestically and internationally, all come to embrace what has been labeled the “Most Innovative Event of the Year.” The 12-day festival is scheduled for March 25–April 5, 2020, and this year is honored to be chosen to host the World Design Weeks Forum 2020. As a meeting and conference for sharing experiences, knowledge, and resources, all are welcome to participate in these unforgettable and thought-provoking presentations, being held April 1-5, 2020.

UNDERSTANDING THE CREATIVE PROCESS DURING THE FESTIVAL What is design? Can it be isolated into a single sentence, or reduced to words? Perhaps, it’s a feeling or a talent that is magically tapped into—at will—by a select few, while others must painstakingly explore their intuitions until—at an unspecified moment—they glean insight into what connects them with what society has labeled as creativity? More than a puzzle of initiative, materials, contemplation, and discovery, design—a component of the physical world—is bound by our spiritual perceptions and the unique ability to intercept the results of biological interpretations, which allow us to experience the trait of appreciation. Perception is not isolated to humans; it’s found in animals—both friend and foe, often recognized as a defense mechanism when sensing fear or conversely--affection. Organisms in labs also demonstrate evidence of perception as they will avoid toxins introduced into their environment.

And, one only needs to consider a “bigpicture” example to follow the concept; our earth’s reaction to the abuse and poison spewed into the biosphere from countries and people from all parts of the globe is a learning experience about cause and effect relationships. The purpose of this discussion is to focus on the complexities of how we interpret and react to sensory input and our ability to fine-tune our experiences. By being astute in our interactions during the Design Week Festival events, we can further develop and enhance our creative skills and appreciation through microsensitive awareness of our responses to various presentations. Those associated with the arts, design, and creative forces are believed to have an unusual sense of receptiveness to their surroundings. They possess an uncanny ability to acutely process thousands of insightful messages and stimuli instantaneously traveling through the complex pathways of physiological, neurological, and psychological sensory pathways. Creative talent may be as simple as the act of paying close attention to your body and your mind. Then connecting them for analysis. For some background, the act of designing transcends deep within our existence and is expressed in many forms, and while many of us resort to describing the primary five senses used for evaluative purpose; Vision, Hearing, Smell, Taste, and Touch, consider the following perceptions be added to this list, so you might find they further enhance your interaction throughout the day—during work, and at leisure. Sensory variables playing a role in our experiences include: Pain, Pleasure, Temperature, Movement, Time, Breath, Thirst, Cognition, Orgasm/Sexual Arousal, Non-Sexual Stimulation, Interception, Balance

t’s abhorrent to see parents, some in the political class, along with others who take advantage of young and impressionable minds, attempt to instill a socialist-economic scheme into our economic system, and worse, our method of government. If left to succeed, such actions would bring this country to its knees while enriching those who would oversee its execution, gaining power and wealth, even though their philosophy is supposed to be contrary. As we watch lawmakers claim they are ‘public servants’ and earn a meager salary for doing the ‘people’s work,’ a good majority of the public acknowledges that these same politicians are a far cry from desperation, often attaining a lifestyle and level of living their middle-class constituents will never achieve. Congress is full of rich and powerful legislators, and as humorous as it appears, many elected officials landed in office with nearly enough change in their pockets to purchase a bus ticket back home for a holiday. Oddly enough, it seems that by working short weeks, taking extended holidays, traveling overseas for junkets—time and time again—not only have these same representatives become powerful, but they quickly move from rags to riches, which wasn’t the plan our founders had in mind. Admittedly, for a few months, during the pre-election season, they shake hands and pretend to be commoners, but once back in Washington, this wine and dine set settle in and don’t look back at voters—until the next election; no, they are usually found peddling influence which isn’t always in the public best interest.

...the American dream of inventing a product or creating a service for the betterment of our culture. In essence, for those who work, they shall receive... 32 | MARCH 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Given this synopsis, accompanied by evidence, some politicians wish to turn our financial system on its head— for the benefit of ‘the workers’—perhaps we need to pause, so we might shine a light on their real agenda. A quick look at history, dovetailed with the actions of the socialist movement in America, defines the objectives of this radical and sometimes violent movement. It is, without a doubt, an organized, deceptive, and planned indoctrination of an entire generation of students being mobilized through radicalization taught in classrooms. LET’S BEGIN. It’s well accepted that we live in a mixed-economic system; meaning, we function as a duality of both capitalism and socialism. It is a balance that relies on the population to work, invent, and participate—in other words—to get off their seats. While the government has oversight, rules, and laws, the primary purpose of most agencies is to ensure an equal playing field is maintained. Its other purpose is to allow the government to intervene for the benefit of those who may not be able to achieve or participate in competitive activities that require good health, a sound mind, and ambition; no one would argue with this principle. What is different about our economy to others is that it is based on a modified free-market paradigm; allow me to simplify this concept—supply and demand will act as a scale or balance between goods, services, and the public’s needs. However, for this system to function correctly, it requires that property be owned by private individuals and production be undertaken by the same. With this comes competitive pricing, voluntary purchasing, and hands-off supervision by elected officials. Unfortunately, this is where we have gone astray. We are not a purely capitalistic society, far from it; principally, because our government places volumes of laws, restrictions, and regulations which often hinder progress; they place fees, duties, and require licenses for businesses to operate, in addition to heavy taxation and manipulate pricing with subsidies or policy inhibitors. Still, we have witnessed changes in the economic arena with an economy that is roaring back, even though many world events we face would, at other times, debilitate our stock market, employment numbers, and household incomes. With this, the public is excited to reach for the American dream of inventing a product or creating a service for the betterment of our culture. In essence, for those who work, they shall receive; but if you don’t, you’ll end up on the sidelines hoping someone will play Robin Hood and take from those who earn a living and give those who don’t a handout.

Socialists believe that the government should own and run major institutions such as healthcare, education, housing, social security, and other vast networks designed to assist citizens. But, from what we observe, it’s often the hopelessly inept who go on to manage these giant service providers—begging the question, Why do they run poorly? One explanation is that politicians and bureaucrats are not businesspeople, and they have little in the way of hard skills. What attracts their interest is the lifestyle, security, and the lack of responsibility that seems to follow bloated public entities. Today, we face far-left politicians, unlike the moderate democrats, many of us idolized in the 60s. Newly seated representatives seek a panacea of government programs that will take care of ‘the people’ from birth, (if you’re allowed to make it that far), to the grave, (how quickly you get there may not always be your decision). They have a vision of Medicare for all, free public education through college, and they want everyone to live an upper-class lifestyle without working for it, even if others pay for such luxury. But, best of all, the “New Socialist Party” is in favor of limiting workweeks to only three days. Huh? Can you not see it; you work 80-plus hours a week, so your lazy neighbor gets a four-day weekend. This needs to be exposed; it is financially impossible and false and is empty hope for a fickle public. So, here is the rub; schools in the past, have been responsible

for teaching business skills and concepts, albeit, much has changed over the last decade. Today, rather than learning economic theory, young impressionable children are sitting with drag-queen performers (no dispersions cast—but really, do they belong in the classroom?), in reading circles. Far leaning fluff courses have replaced reliable and proven business math and basic accounting classes, while many schools have abolished work-study programs where students were once allowed to create small businesses within the school environment so they could get hands-on training and learn entrepreneurial skills. Yes, primary education that builds and sustains our economic growth for decades is being eliminated from the classroom, and don’t think for a moment, this isn’t part of a plan to convert our capitalist system into a single, governmentowned and operated culture. WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? Here is one organization I am pleased to recommend; it’s called Junior Achievement, and they’ve been a significant player in the education of students wanting to learn about business. For students with the drive and goals to succeed, it’s a breath of fresh air. (For more information visit to their website, juniorachievement.org/web/ja-usa/home). Here is an indication of their philosophy and purpose. “JA’s [Junior Achievement] volunteer-delivered, kindergarten-12th NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | MARCH 2020 | 33

grade programs foster work-ready, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to inspire students to dream big and reach their potential.” They go on to say, “Through interactive classroom activities, [students] starting their own entrepreneurial venture while still in high school, programs provide useful, practical content to assist teens in the transition from being students to productive, contributing members of society.” Now, consider the Socialist view of education of students found on the website of American Socialist: “We [Socialist] are committed to the transformation of capitalism through the creation of a socialist society…to establish a new social and economic order that workers and community members will take responsibility for and control their interpersonal relationships, their neighborhoods, the local government, and the production and distribution of all goods and services.” In comparison, we should ask ourselves what system of learning will best equip our youth for the future? More importantly, how would such a transformation take place, and would our society survive the battle which would follow?

Please consider, is it healthy to rely on others for your standard of living and satisfaction? Should we inhibit and restrain those with a unique talent or skill, or better yet, should such individuals be forced to give up these valuable discoveries and never reach their full potential? It is depressing to consider that a few in power would force many of us to hand over the fruits of our labor, ambition, and entrepreneurship so that others without these qualities may live equally and enjoy similar benefits without contribution. In April, we mark the 400th Anniversary of the Pilgrims, who landed in Plymouth and created the foundation of a new world and culture. We are reminded that the new arrival had attempted to rule their plantation, based on a socialisteconomic structure until it was discovered that the plan was faulty. As new residents—nearly wiped out shortly after arriving—they found it necessary to embark on the same principled economic structure we have in place today. History tells the tale that the Pilgrims found it necessary to convert to a capitalist system of economics and is attributed to saving the new community; the responsibility for survival was placed on the individual—leaving each person to carry their weight or suffer the alternative. With this knowledge, consider the issues we face today. Some generations are subjected to parodies; (snowflakes), are spoofed about living in their parent’s basements, unable to face

reality, find work—suitable and relevant enough as not to be embarrassed or offended, and lack all social skills. Supposedly they have little to no ambition, and because of this, they gravitate toward the socialist candidates who tell them it’s okay not to compete and that the loans—money they borrowed under contract—shouldn’t have to be paid back. Viler is the notion that it is acceptable to take other’s wealth, security and independence, and label those who are rich as evil characters, and should be subjected to their money being confiscated by the government through unrealistic taxation, so it may be redistributed to those who don’t earn-but take. If it were not so well documented, these calls for economic turmoil would all be fodder for an end of time novel or a frightening nightmarish movie, yet there is a growing acceptance by a significant number of citizens. Unless we educate children from a very young age about self-worth, personal-reliance, and work ethic, and explain that our modified capitalist system has made our country strong and has provided them and all Americans an opportunity to thrive and build a powerful economic force in the world, we could face a tragic ending to these United States. Such a thought should rattle us all; to think that a complete dismantling of 400 years of progress could begin in under a year is farfetched but within the grip of the radical left and their candidates. MARIT ILISON CREATIVE ATELIER EXCITES & DELIGHTS BY MARGO ROBERTS

ailed as “the true poet of clothing,” Marit Ilison is a multi-disciplinary artist and fashion designer mixing deep concepts with feelings, sensitivity, and eye-catching form in whatever medium she is currently working with. Ilison has created costumes, sitespecific atmospheres, exhibitions, interior, and set designs, when she isn’t playing drums in a psychedelic band, sailing or cooking. Arising from a passion for concepts, pattern-making, and tailoring, Ilison’s work, called by the press as “whispered luxury,” is a patchwork of profound ideas and precision often the result of time-consuming technical execution and craftsmanship. Her efforts are actualized by timeless ready-to-wear pieces that allow for effortless dressing and comfort. Initially, a pattern maker in Tallinn, Ilison studied at the Danish Design School in Copenhagen and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Fashion Design from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2008. Boston Design Week, Continued from page 27

These additional senses—physical and emotional are not always visible or paid attention to, with some occurring at microbiological levels, but related to our interaction and our understanding of how the experience of creating and appreciating design is linked. Often, the concept of design is comprised of collaborative efforts, informational loops, testing and retesting, public input, drawings, drafts, prototypes, focus groups, analysis, and finally, delivered to the marketplace. However, the field is not always regulated to this exhaustive process. Instead, it is existential and innately developed through a series of progressions that are built upon and followed through to fruition. At its conclusion, it is introduced to an appreciative audience. This formulation is where the pure-play artist and designer retreats—their work viewed as personal,

original, and unduplicated—they would have it no other way. Regardless of how we approach design and come to terms with its evaluation, acceptance, or rejection, it would be an exciting task, if we were to conduct a personal inventory of the new senses listed above and join them with those we take for granted. To evaluate their role in our understanding of the spectrum of preferences and tastes would be eyeopening. What’s exciting about this approach is how it is a reflection of meditative practices dating back to 1500 B.C., when Indians and the Chinese would ‘ponder’ through quiet practice to connect the mind and body. It was through these passive efforts they would locate and connect a deeper awareness tied to emotional wellbeing and other related physical attributes that influence behavior and judgment.

A morsel of advice as you make your way through the many outstanding events, workshops and talks scheduled for Design Week 2020; take the time to locate your state of mind and physical presence during each experience; include all 17 senses you possess and try to understand the relationship you are having with them and your environment. Search for thoughts, feelings, likes, and dislikes—especially urges. Try to assess how the stimulation of the moment is influencing your interpretation of the experience. These helpful hints can be applied to all creative and social experiences. Often many of us are in tune with this practice but, sometimes we ignore or take their direction for granted and become disconnected. Focusing, on the whole, will hopefully enrich all of your experiences and interactions. Enjoy. H

he Boivin Center for French Language and Culture—in its 35th year—at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, has announced its spring program, One Island, One Family, One World. This astounding appearance by notable environmentalist, Gaston Déry, is scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2020 in the Grand Reading Room of the Claire T. Carney Library located at the Dartmouth campus at 4 p.m. Born in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, in 1952, Gaston Déry holds a Bachelor of Applied Science/Forest Engineering and a Master of Applied Science/Planning from Laval University. He is recognized for having revitalized Île-aux-Pommes, a family property, located in the Bas-Saint-Laurent, for which he received, an Environmental Phoenix in 2007. of policy for the protection of green spaces in Quebec and urban woodlands. As President and CEO of the Quebec Sawmill Manufacturers Association, he oversaw the development and implementation of an industrial policy focused on sustainable development of the sawing industry on the national and international levels. He participated in the Canada-United States agreement on lumber exports. He has held positions of authority on various sustainability projects. Since 2016, Déry has been president of Gaston Déry, Inc.; a company that devotes its energies to sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. The subject of his talk in April will be on the fundamental role of individual action in environmental protection. Déry will discuss the role of Île-aux-Pommes in contributing to the biodiversity of the St. Lawrence River and will guide the audience through the process of turning a family-owned island into a nesting area

reserve for eider duck colonies in the St. Lawrence estuary while discussing the need for constant attention by the Déry family and scientists, to maintain the islands “sustainable restoration.” The lecture’s message will focus on— the protection of biodiversity and how it remains an essential element for human survival. Biodiversity requires individual attention and vigilance of one’s activity as an effective and concrete way to face the challenge of global warming. The protection of biodiversity is realized through small specific actions that require collaboration between individuals, regardless of their position in society, and governments to meet this challenge. The lecture is free to the public with a Q&A and book signing to follow the talk. For further information about this program or to sponsor an event, please contact Maria Sanguinetti at msanguinetti@umassd.edu or by calling 508-991-5096. Parking will be available in lot 13. H

INTIMACY 1. Marriages and relationships are less secure because of the abundance of possible romantic partners available. 2. With the ubiquity of cell phones, couples have fewer uninterrupted moments and have to compete for attention. 3. Personal devices have become compulsions causing couples to argue over missed or discovered personal emails, texts, or messages; found photos of others; or the miscommunication due to the improper meaning of a conversation.

LOVE AND THE INTERNET BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

M

odern society is technologically advanced most noticeably by our constant use of personal devices that allow us to perform almost any and every conceivable task online. The use of digital electronics is a symptom of a love affair with new and convenient access to people and places that satisfy personal needs and desires often within minutes—even seconds. The ability to surf the world should be viewed as a double-edged sword; for as much good that comes from advanced telecommunications, we find our lives and secrets susceptible to hacking. The motivation for the illegal harvesting of financial data, the capture and release of personal content and photos, along with the gathering of other compromising information, is usually rooted in the crime of blackmail or ransom. However, most importantly, it’s often that our love relationships are severely impacted and need protection. Loving another in a long-term relationship is hard, perhaps the most challenging task we have as humans.

44 | MARCH 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Adding to the difficult job of maintaining trust and commitment, is the rise of the internet and its associated adversity. ALLOW ME TO EXPLAIN

The internet is a wish-fulfillment service; almost anything you want: movies, music, sex, friendship, love, shopping, the news, games, even face-to-face communication with someone on the other side of the globe is available at a click’s notice. Then we face the increase of stress in an already anxiety-filled society. The costs for a faster and more accessible world come with a swelling prevalence of disorders that affects some 40 million American adults. While we need time to relax so we can nurture high-quality relationships, the internet, and its easy access puts us in an odd predicament; it is the culprit that causes the stress, while simultaneously offering opportunities to create “feel-good” solutions to soothe the discomfort. It is this convoluted dynamic that sets up the development of anxiety-based compulsions, often referred to as addictions. Through this evolution of disruptions and resolution being controlled by an outside resource, our lives and relationships are distressed in a host of unanticipated ways.

4. A Facebook friend easily becomes a potential affair-partner, especially if the long-term relationship is going through a rough patch. Often those who explore Facebook find friends and acquaintances posting artificial success in their lives and relationships, putting pressure on real relationships. 5. Amazon has perfected “one-click shopping,” with more partners than ever shopping compulsively while increasing stressful debt. 6. Pornography, delivered through the internet, is creating an entire spectrum of obsession with many Americans. 7. There is the “Netflix Effect,” a phenomenon due to binge-watching. Couples are reporting far lower rates of sexual activity.

Our love relationships are suffering from the adverse effects of digital progress; yet, we cannot blame the internet because each of us has the choice to turn off our devices. Perhaps we are not strong enough to curb our cravings for pleasure in the face of an increasingly stressful world. The internet has evolved into a sophisticated method for delivering distractions to satisfying fantasy. And, while a real love relationship will not always feel good or give us what we need, it is how we grow stronger and develop lasting love. In closing, be careful what you wish for—you might just get it. H Andrew Aaron, LICSW, is a sex and relationship therapist who practices in the New Bedford Seaport.

The novel

CORONAVIRUS awareness and preparedness without the panic BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.Ed.

S

ince the first case of the disease, now known as COVID-19, was confirmed in the Chinese city of Wuhan last December, the novel coronavirus has put the world on edge. As of February 13, assuming the numbers coming from China are trustworthy, Johns Hopkins University’s real-time novel coronavirus tracker indicates more than 60,000 people have been infected globally, with some 99 percent of cases in China, and nearly 1,400 fatalities—exceeding both the 2003 SARS and 2019 MERS coronavirus outbreaks.1 Thus far, the virus has spread to almost 30 other nations and at least one cruise ship where 23 Americans are infected. In the U.S., 46 | MARCH 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

there are currently 15 confirmed cases, including a 20-somethingyear-old-man in Massachusetts who remains in isolation after seeking immediate medical attention upon returning from Wuhan. While there have been just two related fatalities outside of China thus far, a local state of emergency has been declared in California’s Santa Clara County in response to an original false negative report on a man returning from Wuhan. The disease continues to dominate headlines, particularly after it was declared a public health emergency by both the World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS). As the chaos continues, some are questioning whether the fear being created is more dangerous than the disease itself.

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS ?

Explains WHO, coronaviruses are a large virus group in animals and humans, ranging from the common cold to more serious conditions like Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The virus can jump from animals to humans, especially if it mutates.2, 3 The 2019-nCoV, which may soon be called SARS-CoV-2 to indicate its similarity to SARS coronaviruses, is a new strain not previously found in humans before the Wuhan outbreak. Physicians describe the virus as a loaded cold with symptoms of fever, cough, shortness of breath, and potentially pneumonia (fluid in the lungs). So while a common cold generally remains in the upper respiratory tract, the new strain can go low and threaten the lungs.2-4 The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has said that some patients have also presented with gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, abdominal discomfort, loose stools), which, if more widely reported, may help clinicians better recognize the virus in patients. GI symptoms are not uncommon with coronaviruses, experts say.5 According to researchers, affected patients generally remain asymptomatic for some days. One case study in NEJM followed an infected Shanghai businesswoman on a January 19, 2020, flight to Munich. She felt slight discomfort, but nothing especially unusual, for about five days after exposure to someone coughing on the plane. She developed a dry cough, fever, chills, and chest pain, and was hospitalized on

January 25 where she remained as of the last contact on February 5.6 China reported the first cases of viral pneumonia in people who were all exposed to a seafood and animal market in Wuhan. As it has since spread from person to person, many have become sick, though, at a fatality rate of two percent, most cases are believed to be mild with recovery in a few days.7 Those growing seriously ill have typically been very young, elderly, or have lower immunity.3 Deaths have mostly been among older Chinese men and/or those with preexisting conditions. A study in The Lancet showed that about half of 99 Wuhan coronavirus cases had chronic cardiovascular disease (example, high blood pressure) or brain-related vascular disease, diabetes, and, in severe cases, co-infections of various bacteria and fungi. Older men with reduced immune cell counts were more likely to be infected.8 Few Wuhan victims may also be smokers, as were some of The Lancet cases, with China consuming roughly 40 percent of the world’s cigarettes. Additionally, deaths may be due to the country’s lack of adequate healthcare. UNPREDICTIBILITY

Very little is known about the novel coronavirus because of its newness. It is true that influenza kills many more people each year than this novel virus has to date, but not knowing this new virus’ behavior— how it travels and whether or how it is mutating—makes it more NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | MARCH 2020 | 47

difficult to predict and contain, and thus is more of a concern. While official numbers show the new virus to be less deadly than SARS, which had a 10 percent mortality rate among those infected, the new coronavirus has the potential to spread more easily than its cousin. The infected Chinese businesswoman, for example, had spread the virus to her German colleagues despite being just slightly symptomatic, or what the researchers had considered asymptomatic.9 At the same time, however, the virus’s speedier spread and low death rate could hasten what’s called “herd immunity.” Explains epidemiologist Rossi A. Hassad, Ph.D., MPH, this acquired immunity acts as a barrier to further spread since viruses need a susceptible host to propagate.7 The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), though it has been rushing to ship improved test kits to hospitals, has employed an aggressive approach to the present outbreak. Informed by SARS and MERS, it has employed public awareness campaigns; airport screenings and travel restrictions (though restrictions remain controversial in their effectiveness); and quarantine and isolation for those with considerable symptoms, recent travel to Wuhan, or contact with someone sick with the virus. On January 31, 2020, at a White House press conference at HHS.gov, Secretary Alex M. Azar II emphasized the virus’s low threat to the U.S., stating, “I want to stress: The risk of infection for Americans remains low.”10 Massachusetts public health officials echoed this feeling in a February 1 press release, saying the risk of the virus to the public “remains low in Massachusetts.”11 With the measures now in place, Prof. Hassad believes the risk to the U.S. “remains low to zero.” That said, WHO has warned of the possibility global incidence could increase, especially in Africa, which lacks strict air travel controls and medical resources and given the possibility of continued false-negative test readings. A map by Southampton University shows the virus may have intersected nearly 400 cities around the world by 60,000 Chinese travelers from Wuhan, from after the outbreak began to before the lockdown.12 Another unknown is the novel coronavirus’ incubation time. Though the median period was three days, a Yale study of more than 1,000 Chinese patients showed as much as 24 days—calling into question 14 day quarantines.13 Even if the virus doesn’t significantly affect the U.S. healthwise, there is the prospect of severe economic fallout, with the production and delivery of Chinese-made auto parts, electronics, and other items already being impacted. Should Chinese businesses continue to remain offline and the disease becomes pandemic, there could be significant supply chain disruptions affecting all sorts of things, including medicines and medical supplies.

Besides flu vaccination, preventive behaviors include avoiding those who are visibly sick, frequent hand washing with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds (or use hand sanitizer), not touching your face, disinfecting common surfaces in the home and office, carrying your own pen, and considering vinyl gloves when out (especially with open wounds). Building immunity is equally important: not skimping on sleep, exercising regularly and eating healthy, getting enough fluids while avoiding alcohol, avoiding chronic stress (worrying about coronavirus), and not smoking while avoiding those who do. Regarding vitamins, comprehensive research suggests that 1-2 grams/day of vitamin C, 400 IU/day of vitamin D, zinc supplements/lozenges, and echinacea may be effective at preventing and reducing the intensity of colds and flu.15 If you do get sick, follow the basic principles of avoiding others, covering your cough, and throwing out used tissues. Though most colds and flu symptoms subside within a week if you feel something isn’t right, seeing your doctor is advised. Finally, the federal government recommends people have enough essentials on-hand (see ready.gov). Many have pointed out that Americans are woefully prepared for any major disruptions. LITERATURE

New Venue for UMASS Dartmouth’s Highly Acclaimed

AUTHOR’S BRUNCH

Claire T. Carney Library Associates Expands Capacity for 14th Annual Affair BY MARIA SANGUINETTI

O

ver the last few years, many literary enthusiasts commented on the sell-out crowds that flocked to the college campus for what may be the most gracious and informative event of its kind found on the SouthCoast of Massachusetts. An event recognized for attracting the best-in-class of writers, and crowds of devotees of the written word, it was evident that the existing space—although massive—was no longer able to accommodate the number of people wishing to attend the prestigious affair. On Sunday, March 29, 2020, the UMASS Author’s Brunch will be held at its new home, the UMASS’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, at 151 Martine Street, Fall River. the banks of the Wattupa Pond, no location could be considered to be more beautiful or convenient, offering easy access from parking to the front door. This new setting is befitting for the three best-selling authors who will present their works to an inspired audience. This year’s presenters are; Barbara Delinsky, Jacquelyn Mitchard, and Steven Manchester. As a preview to what is in store, organizers have announced the upcoming agenda with brief bios and descriptions of each writer’s works. BARBARA DELINSKY

Barbara Delinsky, née Barbara Ruth Greenberg, was born on August 9, 1945, near Boston. When she was eight years old, her mother died from breast cancer. She grew up in a religiously

This year’s event will likely be as delicious and literary fortifying as all others since it will be held in a stateof-the-art venue that can accommodate guests more efficiently. observant Jewish household that kept kosher. Her family belonged to the Reform movement and attended Temple Israel in Boston. She describes her life as ordinary, taking piano and flute lessons, ballroom dancing, and attending summer camp until the age of 15. The author received a B.A. in Psychology from Tufts University, and in 1963, she married Steve Delinsky, a law student. Their need for money led her to pursue and earn an M.A. in Sociology from Boston College, followed by work she did as a researcher for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. After the birth of her first child, she became a reporter and photographer for the Belmont Herald. Coming from a family of lawyers, Delinsky never expected to publish books. She even speaks of how she was kicked out of her honors English class in high school because she couldn’t keep up. Nevertheless, after the birth of her twin sons, she read an article about three female authors and decided to pursue writing. After only three months, she published her first book using the pseudonym Billie Douglass with Dell Publishing Company. She has also written using the pseudonym Bonnie Drake as well as Barbara Delinsky. Delinsky describes herself as a “philosophical Jew” who does not keep a kosher household but who has raised her sons with religious education. Now that her children are grown, she holds a strict writing schedule, sitting down at her desk every morning at 5:30 and working until noon. Drawing from her own experience, dealing with breast cancer, Delinsky published Uplift: Secrets From the Sisterhood of Breast Cancer Survivors, (2001), a handbook of practical tips and upbeat anecdotes compiled from the experiences of 350 breast cancer survivors, their families, and friends. Proceeds from the sale of this book have gone to her charitable foundation, which funds an ongoing research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. With more than 20 best-sellers to her credit, Barbara Delinsky’s latest book, A Week at the Shore, will be released in May of 2020. JACQUELYN MITCHARD

Jacquelyn Mitchard is an American journalist and author who was born in suburban Chicago on December 10, 1956. She studied creative writing for three semesters under Mark Costello, a creative writing instructor at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. Mitchard became a newspaper reporter in 1979 for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, becoming its lifestyle columnist. Her weekly column, The Rest of Us: Dispatches from the Mother Ship, appeared in 125 newspapers nationwide. Mitchard has the distinction of having her first novel, The Deep

End of the Ocean, selected as Oprah Winfrey’s first book of the month selection, with her other stories becoming best-sellers as well. The author has found winning critical acclaim for The Most Wanted, Cage of Stars, and The Breakdown Lane. The Most Wanted was nominated for Britain’s Orange Prize for fiction, and Cage of Stars was nominated for Britain’s Word Prize. She is the recipient of the Shirley Jackson and Bram Stoker awards. Mitchard has also written for children and young adults; works include Baby Bat’s Lullaby, Starring Prima!, The Mouse of the Ballet Jolie, All We Know of Heaven, and The Midnight Twins. STEVEN MANCHESTER

Steven Manchester is a best-selling author of several books, including Twelve Months, The Rockin’ Chair. Pressed Pennies, Gooseberry Island, Ashes, The Changing Season, and Three Shoeboxes. Born on November 4, 1967, a native of Westport, he began his career after serving in Operation Desert Storm. His book, The Unexpected War: the Gulf War Legacy, examines the war through the eyes of a common soldier. He is the winner of the 2017 Los Angeles Book Festival Award and the 2018 New York Book Festival Award. On January 8, 2020, Manchester appeared on The Road Show on WPRI-TV, where he discussed his latest book, Bread Bags & Bullies: Surviving the 80’s. His work has also appeared on NBC’s Today Show, CBS’s The Early Show, CNN’s American Morning, and BET’s Nightly News. Manchester is the father of four children and is married to the love of his life Paula. When not writing, he works as a Disaster Recovery Manager for Sunlife Financial and teaches workshops on how to become published. This year’s event will likely be as delicious and literary fortifying as all others since it will be held in a state-of-the-art venue that can accommodate guests more efficiently. The objective of the Author’s Brunch is to educate, entertain, and to support the excellent work of the sponsoring organization. Fortunately, there have been no major structural changes to the house since the Alcotts’ time, with ongoing preservation efforts adhering to the highest standards of authenticity. Bristol Community College—Grimshaw-Gudewicz Art Gallery to open—Histories: Lived, Learned, and Inherited Works by Michelle Brown, Talin Megherian and Stephanie Roberts-Camello Exhibition Dates: Thursday, March 5–April 4, 2020 Hours: Monday–Friday: 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Saturday: 1–4 p.m. Admission: Free and open to the public Histories: Lived, Learned, and inherited is the third and final exhibition in our ongoing series of shows that examine the ways we reflect on the past, the ways we connect and associate the lived experience with our understandings of history, of loss, and of change. The exhibition features the work of Michelle Brown, Talin Megherian, and Stephanie Roberts-Camello. History is the culmination of past experiences. We can understand this broadly as the linear expression of events through time. When we are born, we enter into that timeline afresh, or so it would seem. It takes a while for us to learn that our relationships to history are shaped by a myriad of dynamisms largely outside of our control. Gender, culture, socioeconomics, geography, and religious affiliations are among the many forces that help to define our perceptions. Michelle Brown refers to her work as tablets or storyboards. Her work is often presented in diptych form and symbolizes many ways of thinking about access to information. Although her work “reads” like an open book or a sequential narrative, the images are inspired by a number of sources and are meant to be seen either in linear time or as a series of interrelated images in which access can take on many forms. Talin Megherian’s imagery gives voice to her Armenian heritage. She grew up with stories of the Armenian genocide and the atrocities that were inflicted upon a people. Her father, an infant during the Armenian Diaspora, was almost left behind because of the difficulty of traveling on foot with a baby, but his grandmother refused and fed him chewed up grass to keep him alive. Talin’s three series, Wells, Braids, and Khatchkars, all pull from family stories and documents written during the Armenian genocide. Stephanie Roberts-Camello’s work is a response to transgenerational stories about her family history. The discovery of a box of family letters unveiled a time of suffering and loss during the Great Depression and the dust bowl days of Texas. Cowboys and farmers wrote of growing wheat and raising cattle during long droughts and dust storms that people had to endure in hopes for better days ahead. Using encaustic as her medium in relief form, Stephanie layers wax over old letters or eco prints of nature, creating a visual and metaphoric stratum of time. Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket has been delighting audiences since the release of Essen, (Yiddish for eat) on Tzadik Records. Featuring smooth bluesy vocalist Cilla Owens and Shapiro’s soulful tenor, they’ve reveled in the music of the 1930’s onward, intertwining jazz, swing, and Yiddish, celebrating where the Borscht Belt intersected 52nd Street. Shapiro loved the music chosen for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, so he’s put his Ribs & Brisket up to the task of revisiting those classics and putting their own spin on them. Expect anything from Connie Francis and the Barry Sisters to Blossom Dearie and Ella! Joining them will be special guest Eleanor Reissa, who has been winning audiences with her singing and acting talents but most uniquely as one of the world’s most recognized interpreters of Yiddish song. MARBLE HOUSE TO REOPEN AFTER DEEP CLEANING, CONSERVATION WORK Marble House, one of the Preservation Society of Newport County’s major historic house museums, reopened for tours on last month, after undergoing a six-week-long deep cleaning. The house, built between 1888 and 1892 for William K. Vanderbilt and his wife, Alva, will be open daily at 10 a.m. for self-guided audio tours, with the last tour admission at 4 p.m. During the deep cleaning, 10 caretakers worked eight hours a day to painstakingly clean all rooms, furniture, textiles, and decorative objects. Much of the detailed work was performed with fine brushes, cotton swabs, and small sponges. The task was made more challenging by the need to avoid using any harsh cleaning solutions. In addition, the Preservation Society’s professional conservation and collections staff assessed dozens of objects in the house and worked on several that needed special treatment. This included a 3-by-6-foot ornamental plaster ceiling panel in the Gold Room that was taken down and reassembled to make it stronger and more corrosion-resistant. “This kind of work often goes unseen by the general public, but it is crucial to our mission of preservation,” Preservation Society CEO and Executive Director Trudy Coxe said. “The scale of this project has been immense. It isn’t just six weeks of painstaking vacuuming, dusting, painting, and repair work – all under the pressure of a tight deadline. There were also months of strategic planning before the work ever started. Everyone involved should be incredibly proud of what they accomplished.” Marble House, designated a National Historic Landmark in 2006, will be the site of several major Preservation Society events this year, including the annual Summer Dinner Dance on Aug. 15; a celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote on Aug. 26; and the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival’s Grand Tastings, September 19-20. The Preservation Society of Newport County, Rhode Island, celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2020, is a nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It is dedicated to preserving and interpreting the area’s historic architecture, landscapes, decorative arts, and social history. Its 11 historic properties – seven of them National Historic Landmarks – span more than 250 years of American architectural and social development.
