elcome to March and our first official Home & Design Issue.

Many have enjoyed a remarkable real estate market, and with it came an influx of new faces and families into communities across New England.

At the same time, designers, retailers, and just about everyone else in the real estate and design business have enjoyed significant gains from record-breaking sales, even though there have been challenges.

The news for 2022 is that interest rates are going to rise, housing inventories are low, and well, the ‘market’ is on thin ice. That’s fine to dwell on if you see the glass halffull, but for those of us who have been to a rodeo or two, we see opportunity ahead.

Let’s start in order; yes, rates will increase, but they have been ridiculously low for a long time; it is doubtful they will prevent people who wish to rise to the occasion and purchase a dream home from falling to the sidelines. Plus, the most luxurious homes are not financed; they are bought for cash, leaving the shouts of fear some are touting as aimless.

The number of homes available is reduced; could it possibly be most of them have been sold? This down-tick shouldn’t last for long, simply because the demand for the best locations is always in vogue; plus, no one can hold back time, with spring in sight, we should see many more listings coming available.

As for the stock market, the run-up has been phenomenal;

it is how people made money to purchase new homes during the last few years. The recent downturn in equities was manufactured—really. There was no reason for the retreat from the best names and companies on the Dow and Nasdaq, but they collapsed anyway.

Here is some insight; many knowledgeable investors drove the exchanges down—cashed out—so they can go up again!

Doesn’t that make sense? We have seen it time and time again. The screaming fire is getting old, so if you miss the chance to buy low, you likely sold low and are now sitting silently in apprehension.

We like to look ahead and search for calm winds and tides. Yes, there will always be turmoil and uncertainty, but no one has to allow it to rule their lives. If you find you can’t move up, how about improving your situation? Remodeling is going to be bigger than ever. We all know that getting a reliable contractor is difficult, so why wait? Book the help today and create a plan; a perfect home requires updating, something that isn’t on a longterm owner’s mind but should be, especially if they might be selling in a few years.

It is an exciting time for everyone. The advancements of technology, medicine, and communication are beyond belief; if only politics could catch up. (Smile).

H

ow the public views the service industry is perplexing, it wasn’t long ago when speaking to a ‘live’ customer service representative was expected, albeit not always appreciated. While you might not have always found a resolution, you did have an opportunity to investigate your problem with a person.

Today, try to solve an issue with Microsoft, or any technology conglomerate for that matter; the best you can expect is an opportunity to chat with a robot or be directed to a long list of suggestions—a few of which may answer your questions—or not!

Then, there is the post office; while they have hemorrhaged money for years, they have also been accused of being poorly operated. However, according to a study conducted in April 12 | MARCH 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

2020 by Pew Research, 91 percent of the respondents had a favorable view of the organization responsible for delivering the mail.

But, this glowing report may be facing a headwind since rates have steadily increased significantly for a P.O. Box rental. And, as of this January, rates for postage are downright expensive. At the same time, not in all cases, but more than it should be noted, personal experiences with post office employees is the worst in decades. It has become evident that a letter or magazine mailed today can take up to 10 days to arrive at its destination. Along with this difficulty, it seems the necessity of training new hires has diminished. Case in point, monthly, this company transacts a significant amount of business with various postal offices.

found simple procedures not followed, such as UPS and Fed-Ex being allowed to make deliveries at the Post Office.

The once-in-a-while consumer would never notice such difficulties, but people using the Post Office for business become pretty frustrated. On occasions, we’ve witnessed voices raised and accusations made, but to no avail, the Post Office is too big to fight, and if you try, the red tape will leave you wondering if it is worth the battle.

Another issue that invokes discontent revolves around tipping.

A gratuity was once reserved for outstanding service; it was also provided because the service industry was given an unfair advantage over other businesses by underpaying their employees and leaving it up to the public to pick up the expense.

Today, everyone has their hand out, not because they will make your visit enjoyable, but because a tip is thought to

be deserved. Pick up a coffee, sandwich, or pizza, and the personable cashier suddenly goes quiet and offers a blank stare when the credit card machines ask how much you wish to tip and you hit “no tip.” This response from a person who handed you a bag with your food; it is ridiculous to rely on consumers to pay wages for a business owner or over-compensate a person earning a significant salary for their unskilled labor.

The minimum wage has been increased—with more raises to come. At the same time, many businesses are paying higher hourly rates because acquiring workers is so difficult. The question begging to be asked is, why has tipping someone for existing become commonplace? Think to yourself, who tipped you last for a job well done?

For many years the level of service has noticeably declined; not in all cases, there remain some conscientious people, but as a whole, work ethic is at its lowest point in generations. The days of working college students have passed. With grants, loans, and the government offering free rides, responsibility and other essential aspects of personal development have been lost.

Who doesn’t get tipped but probably should? Your doctor for saving your life, nurses provide unconditional care while you are ill, how about a lawyer who wins your case, or the dry cleaner, or tailor who makes you look your best? Consider the neighbor who looks in on an elder next door, the mechanic who keeps your car running, or the computer geek that saves your hard drive? Yes, there are so many deserving people, yet we aren’t conditioned to tip them. These questions lead to another; why are we expected to tip people who are simply doing their job?

If a person is hired to a position, regardless of what it is, and they accept the pay rate, it is their responsibility to perform the tasks to the best of their ability, and they shouldn’t need an incentive. At the same time, employers need to step up and take fiscal responsibility and not hand it off to their customers.

Praise should be good enough, and if it isn’t, it may be time to find another line of work. In a society where the pay-off supersedes the desire to do your best only results in a false sense of accomplishment, causing a frustrated public who at some point is going to realize they are being abused.

At the same time, high-end appliances will remain a staple; but hidden behind creative coverings as not to distract from the genre of the room. The topof-the-line kitchen equipment won’t be going anywhere.

As for space, the traditional butler’s pantry is making a comeback; it allows for storage and a prep area that allows the ambiance of a new kitchen to shine.

The separation of the outdoors and interior space is becoming indiscriminate.

Homeowners want to bring the outdoors inside, but at the same time, their interest is to replace old windows and save on energy. Expanding the view inside a room adds enjoyment, relaxation, and comfort. Sliders and French doors allowing light and scenery will remain a constant, but adding another bank along the wall might also be on the agenda.

Bathrooms and home spas are the most private rooms in the house. These sanctuaries allow distance from daily living through piped-in music, sounds of nature, or tribal echoes, which revitalize the soul. In combination with plantings and fixtures resembling ancient Greece or a fancy hotel, more time will be spent spoiling oneself.

arch is the month of spring fever; a few warm days of brilliant sunshine and a refreshing drive to the country or by the ocean stimulate thoughts of finding a new home.

This year will be no different; homebuyers and sellers will take a closer look at what they need (and what they want) in terms of launching a new lifestyle and embarking on a new adventure.

With talk about interest rates and downgrades in the stock market, there is still an abundance of news concerning the enormous wealth being generated.

Those searching for luxury properties are weathering the so-called real estate drought and are planning to upgrade to a home that caters to their taste and need for exclusive amenities.

Undoubtedly, the fierce bidding on mid-point properties may wane during the spring housing market due to the difficulty to upgrade after selling and wishing to remain in the same zip code.

However, shoppers new to the most desirable communities view elevated prices and limited availability of inventory as a bargain when compared to alternative properties in higher-income locations.

Areas like the SouthCoast of Massachusetts and coastal Rhode Island have been touting housing affordability, along with espousing the beauty of the coast for a while. Such boasting raises the question, how long did they think it would take before the rest of the world learned of these treasures?

There are hot markets around the country, and prices may see a correction, but it is anyone’s guess how much it will be; if you follow the mantra of real estate professionals, it is about “Location, Location, Location,” and the best hold their value over time.

People don’t remember that in 1981, the average annual mortgage rate was as high as 16.63 percent, yet people still bought houses. Even with the Federal Reserve planning to increase rates, it could soften home prices, which could cause a breakout of new listings before their ‘cash-cow’ declines in value. It might create a sense of selling before prices collapse and buying before interest rates increase.

Due to this scenario, we can predict; there is a 50/50 chance the real estate market will surprise everyone for at least the early part of 2022.

Another outlier that no one is addressing is the playing field of real estate. It has become noticeable that the number of agencies is compressing. The once small but busy companies have found it difficult to compete with the large—wellfunded, giant brands that have scooped up the best and brightest operators.

The industry has and will continue to be cannibalized; with the emergence of

new technologies and the ability to manage large groups of agents electronically, the more prominent—but personalized brokers—are leading the way to change home buying. But, let us not forget, the top-tier real estate agencies who keep their old-school “Rolodex” close at hand and hold the right contacts will continue to turn shoppers into buyers.

The most challenging market ahead is first-time homebuyers; we will see them struggle to purchase older and less attractive homes at a premium. But, the silver lining is how these neighborhoods will improve, and the pride of ownership will make them safer.

When the housing prices increase, everyone makes money. People and businesses involved in home renovations and improvements thrive in this environment, people get hired, they make more money, and the cycle continues.

Getting Over Relationship Trauma Coming out of a toxic relationship?

Take the time to heal

elationship trauma isn’t narrowly defined as one might believe; it can result from infidelity, physical abuse, emotional exploitation, mental cruelty, or chronic chaos found in a relationship with partners who are often referred to as damaged.

In many cases, the cognitive and behavioral issues indicative of those with cluster B personality disorders (antisocial, borderline, histrionic, and narcissistic) cause extreme emotional injury upon unsuspecting partners, family members, and colleagues.

The ongoing turmoil and devastation from these toxic relationships can lead to a lifetime of destruction for a partner, leaving them unable to heal the open wound. And, without determining the root cause of the poisonous attraction to harmful partners, it leaves them— no matter how much effort they put into rebuilding themselves—in danger of falling into a systematic magnetism

to these flawed characters.

In some cases, professional intervention is required, but here are some suggestions for those interested in self-help.

STEPS

1. Find safety, both physically and emotionally. If you have been threatened, you should seek support and contact the authorities. Seek out friends and family—if safe to do so—explain what you are going through.

2. Go “No Contact,” meaning block your partner from calling or searching you on social media or email.

Stop communicating with them; by putting them on “Ignore,” you send them a message.

This effort can be complex because of changes to brain chemistry and reward centers which are specific targets in toxic relationships. The urge to contact a partner has been compared to drug addiction.

When children are involved, and you

must stay in contact with a partner, use the “Gray Rock” approach. This method is designed to keep communication as unemotional and straightforward as possible. Some techniques are, using one or two-word answers, staying on task, and effectively using silence if the subject to be discussed changes.

Also, pleading from a toxic partner to stay friends should not be an option; it opens the door to restarting the relationship and further abuse.

3. Accept what you have been through, acknowledge the pain and hurt, but be easy on yourself; there is no reason to blame yourself or feel you deserved the unacceptable treatment.

Feel the emotional upheaval, acknowledge it, accept that it happened, and then release it from your mind. The healing process is not quick nor easy; it will take time; expect a rush of emotions to overcome you when least expected; there will be many triggers that simulate thoughts and

feelings that elicit fond memories.

4. Surround yourself with those whom you trust. Family and friends are vital; they can offer emotional protection and support and help rebuild your self-confidence. Often, toxic relationships force isolation on the victim; this results in distancing from those who care the most but is practiced to please the toxic partner.

5. Refrain from isolation; it is the worst thing you can do. Keep your mind and body moving, get back to a routine, and if you forget what that is, create one; start a daily schedule with goals to be achieved each day.

6. Eat healthy. Don’t feed anxiety, stay away from snacking and eat a wellbalanced diet that will contribute to overall wellness. Keep alcohol use to a minimum.

7. Getting regular exercise is essential but critical now. The chemicals released during a workout will replace those released in a dysfunctional attachment. Distraction and sweating

can reduce longing, rumination, and addiction to a former partner.

8. Rely on a routine of meditation and breathing exercises; clearing your mind will instill peacefulness and acceptance of your situation.

9. Spoil yourself; by now, you’ve likely devoted all of your time and resources to an unappreciated other; it is time to do things for yourself. Buy a gift, go out for lunch or dinner, grab a bottle of wine, have a friend over, and binge on a show you have been interested in watching.

10. There probably won’t be closure, so don’t dwell on it; many toxic relationships that end—only end with you. The poisonous partner will attempt to communicate; they will try to lovebomb, persuade, and reach out by all means possible.

Expect them to lurk in the shadows; they will search you online, through acquaintances, or attempt to “bump” into you in public so they can rekindle the relationship

from hell. Knowing they feel no remorse and saying they are sorry is invalid because they cannot feel empathy.

11. Identify your “Trauma Bond” and learn as much as you can about how it is developed, groomed, and used in a toxic relationship. Figure out if you’ve experienced similar relationships where a Trauma Bond had been established and used to manipulate you.

12. Stay in the present! The past is over, and it is time to move on and write a new chapter in your book of life.

Think about the progress you’re going to make and look forward to the excitement of the unknown.

It is essential to learn from past romantic encounters; consider journaling your experience, make a note of the red flags you missed this time around, and decide what steps you can take to protect yourself and find a partner who truly cares about you and will make you feel safe and protected. H

t’s natural to ponder how we will live on this planet, and views often differ as to whether we can expect to live longer than our biological parents.

As researchers point out, life expectancy (LE) isn’t a person’s actual expected lifespan since it’s based on a manufactured group of people living in an environment where mortality patterns remain constant. Therefore, numerous individual and external factors impacting how long we may live are left out of the equation. But it can provide a good foundation for public health and forecasting for essential programs like Social Security.

PAST TRENDS, CURRENT PROJECTIONS

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, the average LE in the US was roughly 77.3 years in 2020—down from 78.8 years in 2019 due to COVID, especially among Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black people. US LE in 2019 was the highest since 2014, when it reached an all-time high of 78.9 years before beginning the longest decline in over a century, driven by overdose deaths.1

Over the larger picture, though, Americans have seen a significant increase in LE since the turn of the 20th century, thanks to major medical advances and despite the most devastating conflicts the world has ever seen.

For people already 65 years old, the average LE has also increased. In 1950, 65-year-olds of all races could expect to live another 13.9 years (12.8 more years for men and 15.0 more years for women), whereas, in 2018, that number had risen to 19.5 years (18.1 years for men and 20.7 years for women).2 While Americans have seen over a 30-year increase in expected lifespan since 1900, projections are mixed for the coming decades. Experts at Statista predict that by 2030, American men will live on average to age 79.51 and women to age 83.32.3 By 2040, the Global Burden of Disease Study predicts LE for both sexes in the US will be just 79.8 years, and that the US will have the greatest potential for loss of LE among the wealthiest countries.4 Moreover, Statista projects worldwide average LE to go from 73.4 years to just 81.69 years by 2100.5 They predict the US will fall in global ranking by 2040, dropping from 43rd place to 64th.3 But not all experts are as pessimistic about the future.

Despite an average LE in the US of roughly 77 years and these underwhelming predictions, The Stanford Center on Longevity’s “The New Map of Life” report has come to a different conclusion.

According to Stanford University experts, up to half of today’s 5-year-olds residing in the US can expect to live to 100, which could become the norm for people born in 2050. They call this “one of the most profound transformations of the human experience” and initiated the project to rethink what it means to grow old and better prepare for a graying society.

In their view, continuing technological advances will allow people to move, see, and hear better as they age while having less pain and access to better treatments for diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and dementia.6, 7 It’s impossible to quantify how much scientific advancement may prolong an individual’s life, but there are many areas of research that hold promise for countering aging and causes of death.

One cause of aging is senescent cells. In the science of senolytics, researchers are finding possible ways of inducing death in these so-called “zombie cells.” These cells cannot take on any more DNA damage or oxidative stress, have become dormant, and can cause inflammation leading to senescence in neighboring NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | MARCH 2022 | 49

healthy cells. One therapeutic successfully tested in mice was a combination of the plant compound quercetin and the leukemia drug Dasatinib.

Another area of anti-aging research is protecting cells from DNA damage. Telomeres are protective DNA caps at the ends of chromosomes, which tend to erode over time from factors like smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, and pollution. The enzyme telomerase is being studied for its protective role against this degradation, acting as a barrier.

CRISPR gene-editing technology has also recently emerged, which promises to correct defective DNA responsible for disease. Though it also comes with serious ethical concerns, not the least of which is the prospect of people with means paying for superior “designer babies.”

Still, the questions arise: How much further can scientific advancements extend human life, and will they be able to govern the ill effects of, and keep pace with, factors we know influence longevity, such as a poor diet?

WHY AMERICANS MAY NOT LIVE LONGER THAN EXPECTED

Without significant changes, current trends in economic and social stresses, environmental toxins, and dietary/lifestyle habits all speak to an increased risk of disease and decreased lifespan for many Americans.

Research shows that living in poverty significantly decreases a person’s LE. While more than 22 percent of US households were living in poverty in 1959, it’s still high at 11.4 percent in

2020, which is a percentage point higher than its all-time low of 10.4 percent a year earlier due to COVID. Poverty levels tend to fluctuate based on economic recessions and growth spurts, such as when the poverty rate spiked to 15.1 percent by 2010 during the Great Recession. With the ever-present threat of economic collapse from the nation’s escalating debt, which has now eclipsed the nation’s economic output, poverty is a real concern for future generations.8 A worsening epidemic of loneliness as a result of technology, COVID, and changing societal norms is another threat to health and well-being. A 2020 national survey found that 36 percent of Americans feel “serious loneliness,” including 61 percent of people 18-25 and over half of mothers with young children. Research has shown that these feelings can lead to depression and anxiety, heart disease, and substance and domestic abuse.9 Environmental threats to health abound. Particulate air pol-

lution, for instance, is regarded as the greatest threat to human health, taking nearly two years off a person’s average LE according to the University of Chicago Energy Policy Institute’s new Air Quality Life Index. (Cigarette smoking is the second leading cause.) Some 75 percent of the world’s population live in areas of high particulate air pollution, driven by fossil fuels, including many areas of the US.10 Experts predict that diabetes will remain “a major health crisis in America, in spite of medical advances and prevention efforts.”

Between 2015 and 2030 alone, diabetes prevalence is expected to rise 54 percent to nearly 55 million Americans, causing a 38 percent increase in deaths at 385,800 and a 53 percent increase in total associated costs at over $622 billion.11 Americans are on track to achieving this estimate, given current trends in processed food consumption.

There are unique case studies around the world where people seem to have figured out how to live past 100.

In 2004, demographers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain published research on what appear to be five world regions they termed “Blue Zones,” where people live much longer than average: Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; and the Seventh Day Adventist enclave of Loma Linda, California.12 Okinawan LE has since been found to be on par with Japan as a whole (Japan ranking first among nations in LE), and controlled studies are still needed on Blue Zone lifestyle habits and their effect on longevity. But it is interesting to look at factors common to these areas, which support the notion of healthy eating, active living, and community engagement.12 Other lifestyle factors linked to a possibly longer lifespan include, for example, limiting daily calories, boosting happiness, reducing stress and anxiety, being more conscientious (self-disciplined, organized, efficient, and goal-oriented), drinking coffee or tea, and getting enough sleep (8-9 hours for most).13 Genetics play a role in longevity, but we now know that lifestyle and dietary factors are critically important.

Evidence suggests humans are approaching the limit of their natural lifespan. Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment still holds the world record for the longest human life, at 122 years and 164 days. Recent research shows we may be able to push it to 150 years, at most. But scientists note there are many more things that can kill us than keep us alive.

And that may well be the plan of creation for a troubled world. H

th Hour Racing Team Skipper, Charlie Enright, joined some of the world’s very best offshore sailors in February at the One Ocean Summit in Brest, France, to appeal for global collaboration for the health of the world’s oceans.

The three-day summit was hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and the United Nations to deliver concrete action through global policy.

Enright highlighted the importance of sustainable innovation and the collective responsibility of the marine industry to work together for positive change.

A passionate advocate for ocean health and marine protection, Enright joined a diverse panel of experts, politicians, activists, and decision-makers in Breton city and shared some of his experiences while racing around the world. “We sailors have the privilege of seeing the ocean in all its awesome glory—whether we are becalmed in the Doldrums or the rage of the Southern Ocean. However, to continue to stand out as an impactful sport, we must work together to radically change the way we are doing business. and do everything we can to keep it healthy.”

11th Hour Racing Team was formed in September 2019 and is led by American offshore sailors Charlie Enright and Mark Towill. “Across the marine industry, we have to reduce our footprint by 50 percent by the year 2030 to align with the Paris Agreement,” explained Enright. “Within our sport, for too long, we have chased performance over responsibility for the environment and people. Preservation Society/Newport Mansions Joins “Museums for All”

he well-known organization and tourist destination, the Preservation Society of Newport County, has become a member of Museums for All. The new affiliation means efforts will be made to encourage people of all social and financial backgrounds to build lifelong museum-going habits; the organization’s objectives include making museums more financially accessible to everyone with interest.

Those receiving food assistance may enjoy the steeply reduced admission price of $2 per person to any open Preservation Society property by presenting their SNAP EBT (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Electronic Benefits Transfer) card. This offer is valid for up to four individuals per card. Admission is free for children younger than six.

“We are proud to join the hundreds of museums and institutions participating in this important initiative,” Preservation Society CEO Trudy Coxe said. “The Preservation Society is committed to broadening and

diversifying access to our properties and the history they represent.”

More than 800 institutions participate in the Museums for All initiative, including art, history, natural history/anthropology, general museums, children’s museums, science centers, planetariums, nature centers, historic houses/ sites, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens, and arboretums.

Since the initiative’s launch in 2014-2015, Museums for All has served more than 3.5 million visitors nationwide at participating museums representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands. Museums for All is the only nationally coordinated financial accessibility program in the museum field.

n a surprising and emotional ceremony, SouthCoast nursing students attending the Brockton Hospital School of Nursing (BHSON) were rewarded seven $10,000 scholarships from the bank.

Students selected for the awards have experienced unique challenges pursuing a quality education. Dean of BHSON, Jean Gouveia, commented, “The majority of our students come to us with significant financial need. Many are parents and single parents looking for a career pathway to achieve financial security for themselves and their families.”

“We had no idea this was happening,” said Raylyn Gant, a nursing student from Fall River. “We received an email saying we had to go to a mandatory meeting; this was a big surprise.”

Others surprised by the gifts were Ashley Del Rio of New Bedford; “I’m the first one to go to college from my household.

College means a lot to me. I work to pay for everything on my own. This scholarship means so much. I truly thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she added.

fter doing wrong, feeling guilty is appropriate; but there are those burdened without doing anything erroneous.

The usefulness and necessity of guilt are proven by its presence in our lives; it is a part of our conscience and serves as a selfcorrective mechanism, keeping us on track and preventing straying far from our deeply held values.

Urging us to return to the “right” path, guilt saves us from our destructive tendencies and supports our survival. Yet, it can be an over-active condition.

Chronic guilt is distressful; those unable to feel good about themselves cannot be open and be their best with partners, resulting in disappointment in a relationship. When reflecting on past events, assumed lapses, and insensitivities, such guiltladen thoughts recycle and begin to weigh heavily; this, in turn, motivates those afflicted to be continuously apologetic, leading to dissatisfaction.

A distinction can be made between legitimate and illegitimate guilt. The illicit type arrives with no actual crime committed but haunts like ghosts from the past with assumptions of mistakes, errors, and faux-pas, while the 62 | MARCH 2022 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

other is readily acknowledged. And while illegitimate guilt is absent of proof, the guilty continuously pay for their imagined crimes—emotionally.

The basis for such emotional trauma results from negative experiences during childhood; likely, they were made to feel guilty—unnecessarily.

Women are susceptible to feeling guilt due to female socialization, where often the importance of pleasing and serving others is placed upon them. As a result, women feel a deep pull to value the group, family, or community over themselves. Compounding this issue, great emphasis is placed on individuality, which contradicts feminine values, leading many

women to feel guilty at failing to fulfill their responsibilities.

To feel obligated to be everything for everyone is an impossible task that fuels painful but illegitimate guilt. It is a crushing sense of never doing enough and continuously failing.

Inappropriate use of guilt comes when some use it to take advantage of one’s vulnerable nature; “guilting” another to motivate is a well-worn path as found in commercial advertising with sad appearing animals, or people in poverty. These images provoke guilty feelings to encourage charitable giving.

To identify illegitimate guilt takes looking at a situation with detachment, free of assumption, and to ask the question, “Did I do anything wrong?”

Guilt in the form of regret can linger, but we may soothe our past self by applying the benefit of the doubt. oin the Benefactors of the Arts for a self-guided walking garden tour through Newport’s historical point, June 24-26. Tours will run daily from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., with tickets limited to 300 per day.

The event is held in high praise, having been mentioned in the national press over the years.

Since 1984, the organizers and supporters of The Secret Garden Tour have been dedicated to enhancing art education and cultural programs in Aquidneck Island’s Public Schools, funding dozens of programs in music, theater, and fine arts for local schoolchildren. The Secret Garden Tour has given more than $1 million to Aquidneck Island students in public schools. Rhode Island’s Sachuest Point is Remarkable!

T

his National Wildlife Refuge is one of five in Rhode Island.

About 200 million years ago, when the supercontinent Pangaea split, Africa left traces of itself along the shores of Sachuest Point, creating the Price Neck Formation. From the mid-1600s to the early 1900s, Sachuest Point was used for farming and sheep grazing, followed by the US Navy adopting the area during World War II as a rifle range and communications center.

In 1970, a 70-acre donation from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island led to the establishment of Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge. Today, with the land transfers from the Navy, the Refuge totals 242-acres, providing a stopover for migratory birds; more than 200 bird species visit the Refuge seasonally, including peregrine falcons, northern harriers, as well as snowy and short-eared owls.

The Refuge contains nearly 3 miles of trails, offering breathtaking views of the flora and ocean and 40-acres of salt marsh on a steep, rocky coastline.

The site includes a visitor’s complex complemented by volunteers, staff, and creative exhibits. Daily hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. H To learn more, go to fws.gov/refuge/sachuest_point/.

The Landing in Little Compton Brings Peace and Relaxation

D

ifficult to find, and often confused with Sakonnet’ Town Landing, the stretch of land, high above the ocean, brings visitors all year long to enjoy captivating views of the ocean, fisherman, and surfers.

Although barren, consisting of a circular (dirt) parking lot, a stone structure, a single bench facing the water, and a memorial to the land’s donor, its location is the draw for many.

Also found is a memorial honoring Hester Simmons, who had a home there but was annihilated during the 1938 hurricane. Later in life, Simmons had a vision for the land’s use; prior to her passing, she wrote, “[The] lands shall not be commercialized, but shall always be used for recreational purposes—free to all.”

As an essential landmark to the town, grants and gifts have been made by government agencies and a local financial institution, BayCoast Bank, to improve the small park.

The Little Compton’s Town Landing is definitely worth a visit. H
