Welcome... Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. Paul Marion, Ph. D. President At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we compete at the NCAA Division II level and in the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. - Lonny Allen Athletic Director

The Gillmor Student Center The Gillmor Student Center has been the home arena for Tiffin University basketball since the 1988-89 season - and, like the saying goes, there’s no place like home. Since the basketball team began playing its games in the Gillmor Center, the Dragons have compiled an overall record of 175 wins and 109 losses. In the 20-year history of the center, TU has only had eight losing seasons on the floor. The Dragons have a winning percentage of .616 in the Gillmor Center, including a 72-12 record between 1988-1993. In addition to the main auditorium, the building also contains over 17 offices, shower and locker rooms, a training room, a bookstore, a media conference room, a Student Activities room, the Student Affairs offices, the Channel 10 broadcast center, the Tiffin University Hall of Fame, and Trophy Gallery. A complete renovation of the Gillmor Center was recently completed. The Dining Commons, the Osceola Theater, a student lounge, expanded recreation room, numerous new offices, and expanded parking areas are just a few of the new renovations. The complex nearly tripled in size and has grown to service even more of the Tiffin University community.

Tiffin University enters its second season as a member of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Tiffin University is the league’s 14th full member and sponsors 18 of the GLIAC’s 20 championship sports. Located in on a 110-acre campus in Tiffin, Ohio, Tiffin University was founded in 1888 and is entering its 11th year of NCAA Division II status. Tiffin is the third institution from the state of Ohio to join the GLIAC. Ashland University, located in Ashland, Ohio, joined the league on July 1, 1995. The University of Findlay, in Findlay, Ohio, began competing in the league on July 1, 1997. The GLIAC’s members in Michigan include: Ferris State University, Grand Valley State University, Hillsdale College, Lake Superior State University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State University, and Wayne State University. The University of Indianapolis competes as an associate member in the GLIAC in football and men’s and women’s swimming & diving.

Head Coach John Hill John Hill enters his second year as head men’s basketball coach at Tiffin University after taking over for coach Rodney Martin for the 2009-10 season. He will also serve as Associate Vice President for Development. “This presented me an opportunity for me to follow my passion and love of basketball,” Hill, who had served as Athletic Director and Associate Vice President for Development at Shenandoah University in Virginia since 2002, said. “I came back to my home town, my community, my family and friends. Tiffin is a great place to live, a great town with two great universities. It allows me to take a step up in the coaching world by leading an up and coming Division II program.” Hill, a member of both the Tiffin Columbian and Heidelberg University Athletic Halls of Fame, came to Shenandoah after a 27 year career as the Athletic Director and Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Heidelberg College. During those years, Hill won a school record 357 games. He also served at different times as head men’s tennis coach, head men’s cross country coach, head men’s golf coach and chair of the health, physical education and athletic training department. In all, Hill coached Heidelberg basketball teams to five OAC runner-up finishes and two NCAA appearances. Under Hill’s direction, the Shenandoah athletic department experienced unparalleled success. The football team won USA South Conference championships in both 2003 and 2004, the men’s basketball team won a school record 10 USA South Conference games in 2003-04 and the women’s lacrosse team played in the 2004 USA South Conference Tournament championship game. 2010-11 Tiffin University Men’s Basketball Preview With a mix of newcomers and returners who gained valuable playing experience last season, the 2010-11 version of the Tiffin University Dragons men’s basketball team has its sight on success in the upcoming season. With a new coach last season, TU faced a difficult schedule in only its second season in one of the most difficult conferences in the country, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). “Last year, I found out early how tough the teams were in the GLIAC. The talent level is high and the teams are well coached,” said second-year head coach John Hill. “Our non-conference schedule was extremely difficult as four out of our five games were Division II ranked opponents who made the NCAA tournament.” Despite a 2-25 record overall and a 1-21 mark in the GLIAC in 2009-10, there is much to be optimistic about heading into the current season. “We did achieve one goal I had in that we improved every day and by the end of the season, we were a much better team. In the second half of the season, we were in every game with a chance to win, losing by seven to nine points per game” Hill stated. The biggest example of how much better the team was from the beginning to end last season when Tiffin came up just short in its bid to stun nationally-ranked rival Findlay in the last game of the year. “The last game of the year, we lost to the University of Findlay at home in overtime by one. It was the hardest loss I have ever had to deal with. It would have been such a great step for this program to get the victory,” Hill said.

Leading the team will be senior post Rafael Cuellar (6-5, 230, Cincinnati, Ohio/ Western Hills) and senior wing Brian Scott (5-7, 170, Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Juliene), who have the opportunity to become the 29th and 30th Dragons to eclipse the 1,000-point barrier as they have 706 and 822 points, respectively. Combined, the two have played in 160 of a possible 162 games in their Tiffin careers with 132 starts. Cuellar was the team’s leading rebounder last season with an average of 5.6 per game and has a career field goal percentage of .501 (292-583). “The biggest thing about Ralph is we need to keep him healthy and on the floor as much as we can. He can be a very good defensive player,” Hill said. “As a post, he needs to finish when he goes to the basket and his shot selection has to be excellent every time.” Scott, the leading returning scorer with 11 points per game last season, has worked hard in the offseason to be the senior leader that the Dragons will need this year. “Brian is one of our strongest athletes and is shooting as well in the preseason as I have seen him,” Hill said. “When I took over, we had individual workouts where no one shot very well. I am really pleased with his work. If he continues to work hard on both ends of the floor, he can have a very successful season.”

2010-2011 Seniors

Other key returners who saw a lot of playing time last season include junior wing/ post Keenan Barlow (6-6, 235, Indianapolis, Ind./Indiana State), junior post Brandon Harris (6-9, 245, Akron, Ohio/Centenary) and junior post Travis Spahr (6-6, 215, Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna-Lincoln). Barlow led the Dragons with 30.6 minutes per game, starting 25 of 27 contests last season. “Keenan was moved from the wing to the point because of his basketball I.Q. and his ability to lead. He will return to the post/ wing position this season,” Hill said. Barlow was third among returners with a .423 field goal percentage (94-222), second with a .410 percentage behind the arc (50-122). Harris also played a pivotal role for Tiffin last season. Playing in all 27 games with 11 starts, he led the GLIAC with 48 total blocks last season. He also bolstered the Dragons with his rebounding. “Brandon’s size and strength gives us a big presence inside,” Hill said. “He needs to continue to alter shots and protect the basket.” Spahr rounds out the post position for the Dragons. Playing in 19 games with 13 starts in his first season of basketball since his senior year of high school in 2004, he led the team with a .463 field goal percentage. “Our fifth guy returning is Travis, who is a solid player and is stronger than he was last year,” Hill said. “He was amazed at the strength of the inside players in the GLIAC last year and has increased his strength in the w weight room in the offseason, dropping from 2235 to 215 pounds. Travis has the ability to score inside and out.

Returners

N Newcomers

As for this season, a major strength of this year’s squad will be the experience of returning five players who averaged from 19 to 31 minutes per game.

While Tiffin will have a total of nine n newcomers to the program, three are nonfreshmen who have playing experience at t collegiate level. the

“This year, we have five guys returning with game experience with quality playing time,” Hill said. “Last season, we had no one with experience. We have two seniors with 75 games of experience, who have played in my system and who have worked extremely hard in the offseason.”

Three new faces will battle it out for the starting position at point guard: junior Karl F Finley (6-1, 180, Oak Park, Mich./Macomb Community College), sophomore Isaiah Twine (6-2, 180, Marion, Ohio/West Chester U University) and freshman Michael Brown (6-2, 170, Louisville, Ohio/Louisville).

These four teams also made the NCAA ttournament in 2010. After the first four non-conference games iin November (against Michigan-Dearborn, aagainst Saint Joseph’s and Ohio Valley C College at the Findlay Tip-Off Classic and aat West Liberty State), Tiffin begins its cconference slate. The Dragons will play each G GLIAC South team twice (Hillsdale, Wayne State, Ohio Dominican, Findlay, Lake Erie aand Ashland) while each GLIAC North tteam once (Lake Superior State, Michigan T Tech, Northern Michigan, Grand Valley State, Saginaw Valley State, Ferris State aand Northwood).

2010-2011 Returners “The point guard will be a crucial position for us as we will have a freshman, sophomore and junior all new to the program,” Hill said. “Freshman Michael Brown, sophomore Isaiah Twine and junior Carl Finley will all be in a battle to see who has the highest basketball IQ and can do the most to help lead the team. “We feel good about all three,” Hill added. A trio of newcomers also will help the Dragons on the wing. Freshman Joe Graessle (6-3, 185, Grove City, Ohio/Columbus Bishop Ready) will play for Tiffin after receiving a quartet of Columbus Dispatch Player of the Week honors and was named All-Ohio in his senior year for the Silver Knights. Fellow classmate Richard Morrow (6-3, 190, Woodmere Village, Ohio/ University School) also earned All-Ohio honors for the Preppers. Junior wing Jacob Stark (6-3, 200, Richmond, Mich./St. Clair Community College) joins the Dragons after earning all-league honors while also being named honorable mention all-Jr. college and all-national tournament for the NJCAA while at St. Clair. “Graessle will be the scorer with Morrow as the defender and Stark will be an important role player. All of these players will contribute, Hill said. “Graessle has great range to join Scott and Barlow. Morrow has the potential to be the leader of our team on defense and will be a rebounder with the ability to be a great slasher and get to the basket.”

In the post, TU will have the services of Sarwan Khan (6-9, 205, Pingree, Ill./ Hampshire), who averaged eight points, six rebounds and three assists per game while in high school. “Sarwan is a skilled post player who can shoot, move and play above the rim. He needs to increase his strength and adapt to the physical post players in the GLIAC.” Finally, Tiffin will have freshman wing Cole Williams (6-3, 185, Tiffin, Ohio/ Columbian) and sophomore wing Casey Love (6-3, 185, Oak Hill, Ohio/Lander University). “Casey had a late growth spurt from 6-2 to 6-8 now and so his development will come with his work in the weight room. He will have the ability to play when his strength catches up with his size,” Hill said. “Cole is a local product who is a preferred walk on from Tiffin Columbian High School. He continues to impress the coaches with his work ethic. Schedule and Keys to the Season Tiffin will play seven non-conference games on the season to compliment 19 games against GLIAC opponents. Five of the games will be against teams ranked in the NABC Division II Top 25 preseason ranking, including three against top 5 teams (Grand Valley State, two against Findlay in GLIAC play) and West Liberty State and St. Joseph’s, who are ranked 12th and 19th, respectively.

Tiffin will also play in the Findlay Tip-Off cclassic against aforementioned St. Joseph aand Ohio Valley College before beginning lleague play at Ferris State. Following the first five conference games, Tiffin closes out December with a trip to West Palm Beach, Fla. To play in the “Chuck Daly Classic” at Northwood University on Dec. 29-30. As for the keys for the 2010-11 season, coach Hill wants to improve on the accomplishments at the end of last season. “Keys for this year’s team include being a better defensive team and holding our opponents to under 65 points and shooting 40 percent from the field. “We became a much better defensive team the second half of the season, which led to more pressure on the ball and a lower field goal percentage for opposing teams,” Hill explained. “Offensively, we need to score 70+ points per game and push and value the ball. We need to get the assist and play as a team. We cannot get all or nothing shots. We’re looking to play as a team with a high basketball IQ.”

Share the Pride, Build on Tradition is a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffin University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investment by Tiffin University of more than $30 million in the Tiffin community.

Campaign Objectives Recreation Center $9,400,000 The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a field house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities. Other Campus Development $1,600,000 Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only reflects the University’s own growth and success, but also enhances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffin. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities. Endowed Student Scholarships $1,000,000 Without financial aid, many Tiffin University students could not afford higher education. Since over 80 percent of TU students receive some level of aid, TU leaders seek $1 million to bolster the endowment resources of the University to create additional student scholarships.
