DRAGONS
BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE
Welcome to Tiffin University Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field. GO DRAGONS! Paul Marion, Ph. D. President
At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including AllAmericans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A reCent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we compete with the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confident the future will also be highly successful for Tiffin University athletics. GO DRAGONS! Lonny Allen Athletic Director

HEAD COACH JOE WILKINS Joe Wilkins is in his third season as head coach at Tiffin University. The Dragons were 17-33 overall and 16-15 in conference play. The Dragons did reach the GLIAC Tournament for only the second time in school history. Four Dragons were selected as All-GLIAC performers. Wilkins was an assistant coach at TU from 2006-07 and 2011-12. As the pitching coach (2011-12), he guided the staff in lowering the ERA from 7.30 to 5.08. Wilkins helped mentor Pat Curtin and Jordan Liette, two key contributors in that season’s first ever trip to the GLIAC Tournament. Curtin was the GLIAC Co-Player of the Year for his efforts on the mound, in the field and at the plate. On the mound, he was 5-1 with a 3.19 ERA. The Dragons went 14-2 in the last three weeks of the season and Liette was a major contributor. He was 4-0 with 29 strikeouts to just four walks and a 1.93 ERA in 28 innings. Wilkins, also responsible for helping the development of the catchers, saw K.C. Weber earn All-GLIAC honors. He caught in 43 games and hit .299. Weber was an extension of the coaching staff on the field and was as important as anyone in that stretch run. Wilkins was an assistant coach at Pepperdine (2010), where his responsibilities included training the catchers, helping to develop the offense and coaching first base. He helped second-year catcher Nate Johnson grind through a 54-game season in 2010, in which he caught all but one of 473.1 innings pitched and threw out 17 base runners - the fourth highest season total in school history. At the plate, Johnson led all Waves with nine home runs and 36 RBI en route to being named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention squad. Wilkins spent the 2009 season coaching the catchers at Wake Forest, where he tutored Cape Cod All-Star catcher Mike Murray. Murray has recently signed with the San Francisco Giants. Prior to working at WFU, Wilkins spent more than a year at the Florida-based IMG Academies where he worked under former Cleveland Indians bench coach Ken Bolek as the full-time catching instructor. He helped in the development of 2009 New York Yankees second-round draft pick J.R. Murphy. Murphy hit .627 in the spring of 2009 with 11 home runs in 102 at-bats. He added 34 extra-base hits and struck out just four times. During his first stint at TU, Wilkins coordinated the recruiting efforts that helped in the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II and developed athletic marketing fundraising ideas to improve facilities. At Heminger Field, a new press box, back stop and pro-style seating have been added. A locker room, lounge area and coaches offices attached to the home dugout were completed in 2011. During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Wilkins coached in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. In 2006, he was the third base coach and worked with the hitters, catchers, outfielders and infielders for the Delaware Cows. In 2007, Wilkins was the head coach for the Stark County Terriers. As head coach of the Terriers, he worked with players from such collegiate programs as Wake Forest, Kent State and Cincinnati. Wilkins began his coaching career at Dublin (Ohio) Scioto High School in 2005, working with the catchers and serving as the off-season hitting instructor. Wilkins earned four letters at Ohio State, earning All-Big-10 second team honors and being named the Most Outstanding Player at the Big Ten Tournament as a senior. His walk off home run vs. Indiana gave the Buckeyes the tournament title. OSU won two Big Ten regular season championships and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Super Regional appearance in 1999, during Wilkins’ collegiate career. Wilkins played professionally for three years, spending time in the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm systems. He led the Northwest League’s Yakima Bears in hitting in 2002. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Wilkins graduated from Ohio State in 2005 with a degree in human ecology and a specialization in consumer affairs. He earned his master’s of business administration in 2007 from Tiffin University.

HEMINGER FIELD
Heminger Field is part of the Paradiso Athletic Complex, which debuted in the fall of 1997. Also included at the complex are two softball fields, two soccer fields, two football practice fields, and a fieldhouse that is home to the locker rooms of football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball and lacrosse. The field is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffin University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU. Heminger Field has seen more than a few updates since 2008. The first project was a fully equipped pressbox with storage and concessions, followed by a renovated backstop netting system and 108 professional seat-back stadium-style seats. Next, the program added a locker room with 37 custom built lockers. The locker room now has a Bluray player with the latest and greatest access to internet-based entertainment, such as Pandora and YouTube. A digital surround sound system completes this first class locker room facility.
In addition to the new locker room, the Dragons have added a coaches office, featuring a large window looking over the 3rd base side of the field, and a lounge area with a 52” flat screen TV, couches, a field viewing area, a kitchen and a full bathroom with a single shower. This off-season, the baseball staff and players helped with the construction of a 70x80 ft. training area. This area is currently home to two 16x16x70 ft. batting cages, hitting areas all around the cages, on-field-screen storage and a TRX Training Area. This project continues to grow and improve every week. Continued improvements, field renovations and professional upkeep have turned this facility into one of the top NCAA Division II baseball facilities in the region.
FACILITIES
Heminger Center The latest addition to the campus features an indoor track and field complex and a 60x50 yard turf indoor practice facility. One major portion of the building includes an indoor track and four multi-purpose courts that will be used for basketball, volleyball, and tennis. The other large portion has artificial turf and will be used for practices by the TU football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball teams, in addition to intramurals, club sports and other recreational activities. The middle section of the facility has coaches’ offices, locker rooms, an athletic training room, two classrooms, and a food court.
Physical Fitness Center TU also enjoys using the Tiffin University Physical Fitness Center, yet another recently expanded facility benefiting the student-athlete on TU’s ever-growing campus. The facility, which recently doubled in size, features a cutting-edge weight center that is continually upgraded with new equipment.
