Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffin University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffin University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fitness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the field.

At Tiffin University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing field and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. Dragons Equestrian Coaches Julie Vogel

Julie is the Facility Manager and Lead Instructor of the program. She has an Associates of Applied Science in Horse Production and Management from OSU Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio, graduating at the top of her class. Julie has spent her life around horses training and showing. She started at a hunter/jumper barn, showed open and 4H in all disciplines, has judged open shows, trained race horses, has experience in eventing and spent time at a Morgan show stable that showed at the National level. She has been a 4H advisor for over 12 years and serves on the Seneca County Horse Advisory Council. Julie currently shows Third Level Dressage at USDF recognized shows and has taken many horses through the levels. She is a CHA certified riding instructor in English and Western Riding. Julie is a member of USDF, Mid Ohio Dressage Association, International Quarter Pony Association, and 4H. Julie is a mother of two and married for 15 years.

Claire Johansen

Claire is the Director of the program and Instructor. She has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy from OSU and a Masters of Business Administration from Tiffin University. Claire grew up helping exercise and groom polo ponies. After a successful business career, she reignited her passion for horses at age 40. In 2005 Lane of Dreams Farm LLC, an Equestrian training center, was founded by Julie and Claire to provide the community with a safe environment to learn English and Western riding and become well rounded horsemen. The program is designed to train horses and people in various environments from indoor schooling to trail riding over various types of terrain. Claire served as a 4H advisor and member of the Seneca County Horse Advisory Council for over ten years. She is a CHA certified riding instructor. Claire is a member of USDF, AQHA, and Flatlanders Combined Training Association and loves learning Dressage. She continues to serve as a Director for various private and public institutions. She is the mother of three grown children and has been married for 34 years.

2009–10 Equestrian Preview The Tiffin University Equestrian team capped off a solid 2008-09 campaign with strong regional performances. In only its second year of competition, the Dragons have become regionally recognized for their individual and team talents, and Coach Julie Vogel believes that this is only the beginning. "The Equestrian team is only two years old and we have been competing against teams that have been established for years. Our region is large and very strong, and we're very proud of our team's success this past season,” Vogel said. That success resulted in two team members competing in Nationals, in addition to a strong showing at the Western Regional Competition, held at Lake Erie College. "We had six of eight equestrian athletes place in their respective competitions at Regionals," said Coach Vogel. "Last year's Western National Championship winner was Ohio State University, which we compete against at Regionals, so that shows the level of competition." Eric Pettigrew finished second in Beginner Horsemanship, qualifying him for the National Semifinals. "Eric has worked hard for this. Even before the team was officially established, he started going to watch competitions. He attended extra practices to improve his skill and ability and earned this accomplishment," said Head Coach Julie Vogel. The team had a total of seven members qualify for Regionals in Beginner and Intermediate Horsemanship, with the team finishing in fourth place out of ten teams for the year. In Regional Hunter Seat Competition, three riders qualified and the team finished fourth for the season out of eight teams. For the season, there were some great performances by individual athletes that set the stage for the strong showing at Regionals. Sophomore riders Elizabeth Buskey and Alison Dittman qualified in both the Hunt Seat and Western competitions, an accomplishment matched by only two other riders in an 88-rider field. Melissa Cassidy and Kaitlin Foster both established rare feats as well, as Cassidy qualified for Regionals after only eight competitions, while Foster qualified in two divisions. Cassidy also qualified for National Western Semifinals. With a promising returning class and a group of competitive newcomers, Coach Vogel looks forward to seeing the program grow and improve. "The 2008 Western National Championship winner was Ohio State University,” said Vogel. “This year they placed second. This is the type of team we compete against in our Region, both in Western and Hunter Seat. Our goal is to compete at the highest level possible."

Lane of Dreams Farm The 54 acre facility has a 70' x 135' indoor arena with a heated observation room and a 100' x 200' outdoor arena. Trails in the woods surround the pastures. Our priorities are the safety and comfort of our horses and riders. In order to maintain consistent progress, we encourage students to ride in at least one lesson per week, usually scheduled at the same day and time. Initially, instruction is best accomplished in a private lesson. For young and beginning students, half hour private lessons offer an opportunity to get started riding without as great a time or cost commitment. Our goal is that our students will learn how to care for a horse as well as ride the horse. Our instructors are CHA certified riding instructors. Horses in our care for training will be trained to be safe mounts for their owners.

As Athletic Director at Tiffin University and Head Baseball Coach since 1992, I can personally attest to the fact that this is an exciting time at Tiffin University and particularly its athletic department. 2008–09 in Review TIFFIN UNIVERSITY, TIFFIN, OH— The Tiffin University Equestrian team competed against eight college teams in two Western discipline shows at The OH State University on Sunday, November 2. Tiffin University and Akron were named Reserve Champions.

Placings: ( first number is first show, second is second show)

During the first competition in three separate classes: Intermediate II-Walk Trot Canter, Alison Dittman (Winter Haven, FL) and Danielle Holland (Memphis, MI) earned 2nd place; Elizabeth Buskey (Rootsville, OH) placed 3rd and Tiniel Pinon, (Tiffin, OH) and April Fruchtnicht (Greensburg, IN) placed 4th. In the Intermediate I-Walk Trot Canter class, Sarah Croswhite (Placerville, CA) placed 4th. In four separate classes: Beginner-Walk Trot, Trisha Hellein (Latrobe, PA) and Melissa Cassidy (Fostoria, OH) earned 1st place; Rachel Zwayer (Ashville, OH) and Jenna Trillet (Wadsworth, OH) earned 2nd place; Eric Pettigrew (Reading OH) earned 3rd, Lindsay Schwenk (Indianapolis, IN) earned 4th, Tyler Riddle (Toledo, OH) earned 5th, Amanda Cowan (Noblesville, IN) and Amanda Hoile (Marysville, OH) placed 6th and Megan Bates (Delta, OH) received Honorable Mention. Tiffin University took 5th place overall in the first competition of the day. During Sunday’s competition of the Intermediate II-Walk Trot Canter classes, Alison Dittman earned 1st place, April Fruchtnicht earned 4th, and Liz Buskey and Tiniel Pinion received Honorable Mention. In the Intermediate 1-Walk Trot Canter class, Sarah Croswhite earned 2nd place. In the Beginner-Walk Trot class, Megan Bates placed 1st in her class earning her enough competition points to move her up to the Intermediate-Walk Trot Canter class. Amanda Cowan and Tyler Riddle earned 1st place; Lindsay Schwenk, Rachel Zwayer and Eric Pettigrew earned 2nd place; Jenna Trillet and Trisha Hellein earned 3rd place; Melissa Cassidy earned 4th, and Amanda Hoile placed 5th.

Intermediate Fences Kaitlin Foster earned two1st which allows her to point up to the Open division—the highest level of riding in IHSA. She has also qualified for the regional competition in the spring with 39 total points. Tiffin University finished 3rd overall on Saturday and 4th overall on Sunday.

The Tiffin University Equestrian Team completed their fall semester Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition schedule November 15 and 16. The Hunter seat competition was hosted by Ohio University’s English team at Stonegate Farm in Belpre, Ohio. TU’s English team competed both days placing 6th on Saturday and 10th on Sunday. On Saturday, Kaitlin Foster,a Junior from Novelty,Ohio, qualified for Regional competition in Novice Flat, moving her up to Intermediate Flat for the remainder of the school year. The team begins Spring semester competition in both English Hunter Seat and Western Riding January 25, 2009. Competitions are: January 25, Ohio University western (2competitions); February 7 & 8, Ohio University hunt; February 14 & 15, Lake Erie College hunt; February 22, Ohio University western (2 competitions); March 1,Ohio State University western (2 competitions); March 8, Regional Competitons – western & hunt at Lake Erie College.

The Tiffin University Equestrian Team competed in their first Hunt Seat spring semester Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition on February 7 and 8. The Hunt seat competition was hosted by Ohio Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s English team at Stonegate Farm in Belpre, Ohio. TUâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s English team competed both days placing 4th and tying with Kent State on Saturday, February 7, and 5th on Sunday, February 8, 2009. Ohio University Hunt team was 1st both days, Lake Erie College 2nd both Days. On Saturday Oberlin placed 3rd, Tiffin University and Kent tied for 4th and Ohio State placed 5th. On Sunday Ohio State was 3rd, Oberlin 4th and Tiffin University 5th. Nine teams competed both days. Other teams competing were Denison, Akron, and Wooster.

TU Equestrian Team Competes in OU Western Competition The Tiffin University Equestrian Team competed in the second Western horsemanship competition hosted by Ohio University’s Western Team at Chuck Smith Cutting Horses in Canal Winchester, OH. The team competed in two competitions on Sunday, placing 6th in the morning’s first show and 5th in the afternoon out of eight competing universities. During the competition on Sunday morning freshman Sarah Croswhite qualified for Regional competitions in Intermediate Horsemanship I, moving her up to Intermediate Horsemanship II for the remainder of the season. Tiffin University’s Western Equestrian team finished the season strong in two competitions on Sunday. Eight colleges participated in Sunday’s competition including Ohio State University, Ohio University, University of Akron, Lake Erie College, College of Wooster, Kent State University and Oberlin College. Despite only filling three of the six divisions, the team’s hard work and dedication paid off, earning a tie with Akron University for 3rd Place overall in the morning competition and took 2nd Place Reserve Champion as a team behind Ohio State University in the afternoon competition. During the competitions on Sunday team members earned enough individual competition points to qualify them in the Regional Competitions on March 8, 2009. Elizabeth Buskey qualified in Intermediate Horsemanship II, moving her up to Novice Horsemanship. Amanda Hoile qualified in Beginner Horsemanship, moving her up to Intermediate Horsemanship I. Melissa Cassidy also qualified in Beginner Horsemanship, moving her up to Intermediate Horsemanship I. Tiffin University Debut at Hunt Seat and Western Regional Finals Success Eric Pettigrew qualified for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Semifinals in Western Beginner Horsemanship. The competition will be held at West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas March 20-22. “Eric has worked hard for this. Even before the team was officially established he started going to watch competitions. He has been attending extra practices to improve his skill and ability and earned this accomplishment,” said Head Coach Julie Vogel. Six of eight equestrian athletes placed in their competition. “We had two sophomore riders, Elizabeth Buskey and Alison Ditman, qualify and ride in both Hunt Seat and Western. This is a very unique accomplishment. Eighty–Eight riders competed in the competition and only two other riders qualified in Hunt and Western. We also have a freshman, Melissa Cassidy, qualify for Regionals after 8 competitions and a Junior, Kaitlin Foster, qualify in two divisions for Regionals. Most athletes require more than 8 competitions to earn 35 points and rarely does someone qualify for two divisions. These athletes have worked hard this year and we are so proud of them. Our Hunt Seat Team and our Western Team worked on specific strategies to improve their performances and their competition results reflected their hard work. The Equestrian team is only two years old and we have been competing against teams that have been established for years. Our region is large and very strong. Last year’s Western National Championship winner was Ohio State University, a team we compete against in our Region,” said Coach Vogel.

Western Regional Competition The Regional Competition was held at Lake Erie College in Concord, Ohio. Riders had to qualify for the competition by earning 35 points. Only those riders who received a first or second place moved on to the National Semifinals. Pettigrew is a senior majoring in Marketing in the school of Business at Tiffin University and will be graduating in May of 2009. Pettigrew is a scholar athlete and also played soccer for TU. He is from Reading, Ohio near Cincinnati and placed 2nd in the Beginner Horsemanship, qualifying him for the National Semifinals. Other members who qualified for Regional Competition in Western were: Megan Bates, senior (Delta, Ohio) Beginner Horsemanship placed 5th ; Elizabeth Buskey, sophomore (Rootstown, Ohio) Intermediate Horsemanship; Melissa Cassidy, freshman (Fostoria, Ohio) Beginner Horsemanship placed 3rd.; Alison Ditman, sophomore, (Winterhaven, Florida) Intermediate Horsemanship placed 6th ; Amanda Hoile, sophomore (Dublin, Ohio) Beginner Horsemanship placed 4th; Trisha Hellein, sophomore,( Latrobe, Pennsylvania) Beginner Horsemanship placed 6th. The TU team placed 4th out of 8 teams in high points for the year. In first place was Ohio State University, 2nd place was a tie between Lake Erie College and Ohio University, 3rd place Oberlin College, 4th place Tiffin University, 5th place University of Akron and 6th place College of Wooster.

Regional Hunter Seat Competition Tiffin University also qualified three riders in the Regional Hunter Seat Competition. Riders needed to earn 35 points to compete. Elizabeth Buskey and Alison Ditman qualified in both the Western and Hunter Seat Regional Competition. Buskey competed in Walk Trot Canter and Ditman competed in Novice Flat, taking 6th place. Kaitlin Foster qualified in two divisions - Novice Flat and Intermediate Fences. She was unable to compete due to an injury sustained just prior to the competition. The Tiffin University Equestrian Hunter Seat Team took 4th place for year high points competing against 10 teams. First place, Ohio University, 2nd place Lake Erie College, 3rd place Ohio State University, 4th place Tiffin University, 5th place Oberlin College, and 6th place University of Akron.

The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) has grown and developed since it was established in 1967 through the prototype competition program Bob Cacchione (with the help of his professor Jack Fritz) started when he was an 18-year-old sophomore at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. Today, from its beginning with just two intercollegiate competing colleges, the IHSA is an organization that encompasses 29 Regions in 9 Zones with more than 300 member colleges in 45 states and Canada – representing more than 6500 riders in both Hunter Seat Equitation, Western Horsemanship, and Reining. In 1999 the original organization was dissolved and IHSA Inc was incorporated as a non-profit organization. Highly praised for its structure of competition, the IHSA allows riders with various degrees of experience in the hunter and western rider disciplines to compete individually or on a team. Competition plays a role, but student enthusiasm and team spirit are the major objectives. Emphasis is on learning, sportsmanship and fun. The Association was founded on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows, regardless of their financial status or riding level. The IHSA attempts to eliminate the expenses of students owning horses and allows more students to compete. Students ride horses that are furnished by the host college and chosen by drawing lots. The use of personal tack is not allowed and schooling is not permitted. The theory behind this structure is to equalize variables of the competition and test the horsemanship of the contestants. Classes range from walk/trot for first year students to the Open Division for the more experienced riders. Full-time undergraduate students of member colleges or alumni who competed in the IHSA as undergraduates are eligible to compete. Riders qualify for the National Championship Horse Show (Nationals) through a point system. During the year, contestants accumulate points at local shows to qualify for the Regional Finals in their respective divisions. The top three riders in each class of the Regional Finals move forward to the Zone Finals. The top two competitors in each class at Zones qualify for Nationals. Each region’s high point team competes head to head with the other high point teams in its Zone for the right to represent the Zone for National Champion Team honors: winning the “Collegiate Cup” for the Hunter Seat division and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Trophy in the Western division. The regional high point riders are eligible for the National Individual Championship. The USEF/Cacchione Cup is awarded to the National Individual Hunter Seat High Point Rider. The AQHA Western Rider winner receives a Textan saddle and a scholarship. The National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) awards a Morrison Bronze trophy to the winner of the Individual Open Reining Horsemanship class winner. With broader horizons, the future of the IHSA looks bright. The IHSA has already gained media attention. Publications such as Practical Horseman, Horse & Rider, Equus, Dressage Today, Western Horseman, The Quarter Horse Journal, Chronicle of the Horse, The New York Times, Horses International, Horse Play, Horse Illustrated, and the USEF magazine Horse Show have written stories about the IHSA and the Nationals.
