BOHUS FORTRESS
Become a knight for a day at Bohus Fortress.
The mighty Bohus Fortress sits where the Göta Älv river parts, where until 1658 it was Norway’s southernmost outpost. Named after the fortress, Bohuslän was ruled from here and for a long time, the impregnable fortress served as a prison. Take a look into the medieval prison cell. There’s a lot to do at Bohus Fortress, try the floats in the pond or take an impressive selfie seated in a throne. Welcome to a unique Scandinavian heritage site.

CARLSTEN FORTRESS Carlsten Fortress is a well preserved and impressive site with a dramatic past. The silhouette of Carlsten Fortress is visible from a distance from all directions as one approaches the island of Marstrand by sea. For more than 350 years, this mighty guardian has protected the small town below. It was the Swedish King Carl X Gustav who ordered the construction of the fortress when Marstrand became Swedish in 1658. Another 200 years was to pass before the fortress was finished. One of its most famous prisoners was the infamous Lars Larsson Molin, better known as LasseMaja as he dressed as a woman during his thefts and fraud. In the middle of its courtyard, Soldathotellet (Soldiers Hotel) offers accommodation. The fortress also offers concerts, marching soldiers and delicious waffles at Våffelcaféet by the entry. Guided tours are available to really make history come alive within the walls!

‘FIKA’ IN SOUTHERN BOHUSLÄN The Swedish way to enjoy delicious treats Fika – a typically Swedish and much-loved phenomenon. Over a cup of coffee and fragrant baked goods, we make contacts, chat, and enjoy ourselves. In southern Bohuslän you can ’fika’ (yes, it’s a verb too!) accompanied by history, the ocean, cultural settings and art. Home-baked and locally produced in consideration of sustainability and the evironment. Take a trip to one of these welcoming cafés. Or pack your own Picnic basket and head into nature. The scent of coffee and sound of screaming seagulls and waves below the jetty. Or whining autumn winds outside, frost patterns on the windows, or the year’s first outdoor fika in the early spring sunshine. The seasons shape the café life of southern Bohuslän. Here, we’ve stopped by a few local spots, but there are many more to discover in our region’s rich café culture. TRENDY AND ALTERNATIVE BAKES GOODS Café Solgläntan, located in Svenshögen, is an environmentally certified small-scale café that has taken shape alongside the farm and farm shop. Situated near the lake Hällungen, it focuses on healthy and raw food, which means the café offers goods baked mainly from raw ingredients and natural sweeteners such as nuts, fruit, berries and coconut fat. SEASIDE SOURDOUGH AND BOAT HOUSE FIKA The organic sourdough bakery Lottas Bak & Form on Tjörn is listed as one of Europe’s 10 best beach restaurants by The Guardian. This is the place to head for if you like sourdough pizza, great fika and stunning sea views. Everything is made from scratch and visitors are greeted by freshly-baked scents, warmth and activity the minute one steps in through the door.
Mias Sjöbod (Mia’s Boat House) in Hälleviksstrand is also located next to the sea, and has coined the expression ‘boat house fika’. Set within her father Gösta’s old boat house right by the jetties, it always serves freshly baked goods. FIKA IN NATURE You can also pack your backpack with baked goods and a thermos of freshly brewed coffee, and head into nature. Explore on your own or follow one of the many excellent walking trails that take you to the views at Dyrön, the caves by Sundsby, the breath-taking views from Tjörnehuvud, Stenstugan by Säbyleden trail or the old-growth forest and lakes of Svartedalen. Climb a mountain, find a sunny forest opening, a beach or cliff to enjoy fika right in the middle of nature – open all year round!

Who wants to kiss a frog WHEN THERE ARE SUCH GORGEOUS CRABS?
The Brothers Grimm wrote the fairy-tale about a princess who befriends a frog. When she kisses the frog, it turns into a prince. We all know the story. But, honestly, how about kissing a cute crab that you’ve just pulled from the ocean instead of a boring old frog? In southern Bohuslän you’ve got every chance. Crab-fishing is the sport of all sports. Simple. As good as free. And incredibly fun for all ages.

Recipe for successful CRAB-FISHING:
BARNENSLEKSTAD & LASER ARENA 442
Most people love crab-fishing. It´s simple, and you almost always catch something. All you need is some string, a peg and a bucket.
Climb, slide, cycle, jump and play in the miniature city at Barnens Lekstad (Children’s Play City) in Kungälv. Right next door, LaserArena 442 offers fun for young and old.
1. Find a suitable crab-fishing spot – the water’s edge or jetty works well. 2. Tie the peg to the piece of string and find a blue mussel or sea snail. Crush the mussel or sea snail and peg it.
barnenslekstad.se barnenslekstad laserarena442.se laserarena442
3. Fill the bucket with sea water, throw your peg and bait in and wait. 4. Don’t forget to release the crabs where you caught them when you are finished!
Good luck!

Sundsby Manor (Sundsby Säteri) is a great place any time of year – in spring, you’ll hear the croaking of frogs, in autumn the beech forest explodes in colour, the green lush summer setting sets you free, and in winter you can enjoy the stillness of a frosty landscape.

PADDLING TIPS FROM TJÖRN
PADDLING TIPS FROM ORUST
The waters outside Rönnäng on Tjörn are perfect for kayaking. We recommend paddling east from Kajaktiv and Bleket. Choose between the inner route via Kalvsund past Rönnäng and the outer route via the island Väggen and on towards Åstol whose protected harbour is perfect for a break before continuing along Hakefjorden inner archipelago. Paddle on to the protected island Kärrsön with narrow straits and valleys. If you feel like camping, we recommend the island Katten, an amazing island with beaches and a perfect spot to pitch your tent on the north-eastern side.
Orust Kajak enjoys a protected location by Stocken’s Camping. It is always possible to kayak here as there are protected waters in all directions. In just half an hour, you can reach Café Wintervallen, where there is even a beach to land the kayaks at. If you continue, you will reach charming Gullholmen in another half hour. Paddling south gets you to Käringön in 1,5 hours. Visiting Härmanö Huvud is a must! You get to the nature reserve in about one hour from Orust Kajak. Camping is not allowed, but you can enjoy paddling among hundreds tiny islands and skerries. There are lagoons, narrow water furrows, and a sandy beach with a view of the open horizon. If you want to stay longer, there are lovely spots for your tent on neighbouring Vallerö!

GET ON YOUR BIKE
RENT A BIKE!
Cycling is a huge sport internationally and the bike is becoming an increasingly obvious way to get around. No surprises there. The environment and people benefit from more people pedalling than driving a car. Filling your lungs with oxygen and discovering nature from the saddle is a fast-growing urge that South Bohuslän can meet – and then some. In the historic Kungälv area of fortresses, excavations and cobblestone streets, the bike trails run through a modern townscape, vast natural terrain and grand archipelago. Stenungsund also has lovely cycling routes, both near the ocean and further inland. Orust has really good road cycling routes through a varied nature landscape of islands and cliffs in the west and agricultural areas and lakes in the east. Tjörn is a perfect cycling island for the whole family, offering safe, interesting and varied cycling.

The route is well signed, and a map is available. sodrabohuslan.com

BREATHE IN THE CALM AFTER THE STORM
Remember September
Experiencing the Swedish West Coast in September is a bit like visiting ski resorts during the summer. It’s the same place, yet different. Something has happened. A mysterious charm has emerged. It is the calm after the storm.

ONE OF EUROPE’S MOST BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE PARKS Those wanting to visit southern Bohuslän in September, can expect many experiences. In Skärhamn on Tjörn you can combine culture with a stroll on the docks, shopping in small unique shops and Swedish fika. Walk or cycle on to Skulptur i Pilane, the cultural landscape that was named one of Europe’s most beautiful sculpture parks by The Guardian in 2016. After a walk among stone walls, freely grazing sheep and gigantic artworks, we recommend spending a night at Sweden’s first floating hotel, Salt & Sill, on Klädesholmen. If you’re an early riser, you can rent a kayak at Kajaktiv in Bleket and explore one of Sweden’s best kayaking waters – it’s absolutely magical in the morning light! Next door, there is an amazing sourdough bakery; Lotta´s Bak & Form. Don´t miss out!

DISCOVER KÄRINGÖN ON FOOT The significantly smaller and car-free island of Käringön can’t compete with Tjörn’s rich cultural offerings. Here, barren cliffs and narrow alleys filled with white wooden houses are the attraction. To get there, you drive up to Orust and catch the ferry from Tuvesvik. Stroll around Käringön’s charming shops. A stop at the fish shop is always great; If you are lucky you will see when the crayfish are being cooked. Enjoy the delights of the ocean and other goodies at one of the restaurants. Despite the small size of the island, there are four places of different price ranges to stay, from hotels to hostels. On the way home to the mainland, you can stop at Gullholmen and see the mix of archipelago villas on what is probably Sweden’s most densely populated island. Make sure you also take a walk among heather moorlands and barren cliffs in one of Bohuslän’s largest nature reserves, Härmanö.

F ishing for all tastes Text: Jonas Nordigårds
Södra Bohuslän offers a unique Fjord region with lots of islands, deep banks, strong currents and large sections of shallow waters. Overall, the fjord area is extremely productive and offers very good conditions for fishing. Many people travel here to experience sea trout fishing close to the shore. And during summer, large shoals of mackerel swim into the fjords where they can be caught from land and from boats. Out at sea, deep sea-fishing offers everything from cod and pollock to ling and other exciting deep sea species. There are also several lakes offering excellent fishing for pike, perch and zander.
shallow sand bays and cliffs lashed by waves. April 1 marks the premiere for sea trout fishing and is the start of many people’s fishing season. Sea trout fishing in shallow waters with sporadic vegetation is an extraordinary experience. When summer begins, and the water warms up in June, steep cliffs and capes offer the best spots for trout fishing. The mackerel also arrives, chasing sand eel and other small fish along cliffs and jetties. If you don’t have a boat, your best bet is hiring a guide or joining a fishing tour. It’s also possible to fish for mackerel and trout straight from land.
DO YOU NEED ACCOMMODATION? There are many types of accommodation a short walk from fishing spots. Many keen fishers stay at Hotell Solliden, Salt & Sill, Stenungsbaden Yacht Club, Malö camping, and Hafsten Resort.
The archipelago environment of the fjords offers unrivalled fish conditions with everything from strong tidal currents to

Marstrand
HISTORIC ISLAND WITH ALL-YEAR CHARM Far out to the west, at the edge of the archipelago where the sea takes over, is where you’ll find Marstrand. Famous for its sailing and swimming. Feel the sense of power at Carlstens Fortress, the harbour full of all manner of boats and picturesque neighbourhoods with pedestrian streets. There are many top-class restaurants and cafés in the area, as well as opportunities for sunbathing and swimming in the sea. As you cross the water to Marstrand, you can already spot the majestic Carlsten Fortress, surrounded by moats and four bastions, which give the island its fairy-tale-like silhouette. Following the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658, Bohuslän and Marstrand became Swedish and Karl X Gustav decided to build a fortress to protect it. There are some great walking options in the area. You can stop for a swim at the nudist beach during 30
your walk around the whole of Marstrandsön, or take a shorter walk through Smugglarrännan. Take a break out by Skallens lighthouse and admire the enchanting area where the Skagerrak and Kattegatt meet. On Koön there are well-marked footpaths, with three levels of difficulty and many lovely rest areas and viewpoints.

Car-free islands to long for The islands of the Bohuslän archipelago all have their own character. Its residents have lived a hard life at times, sometimes isolated and vulnerable, surrounded by the ocean that gives and takes. Today, these car-free islands offer space to breathe and natural experiences within easy reach by regular ferries all year.
Outside ORUST, KÄRINGÖN is situated far out in the archipelago. Boasting mighty views of the ocean, its western side starkly contrasts the snug maze of wooden houses and paths around the island. The same ferry stops at GULLHOLMEN, one of the oldest fishing communities in Bohuslän. M/S Strömstierna line 381 departs Tuvesvik, taking ten minutes to reach Gullholmen and 45 minutes to Käringön.
A short ferry ride across the strait brings you to the island of MARSTRAND. Stroll along tiny alleys, trendy boutiques and lovely restaurants. The island also offers wonderful hiking trails. The ferry Lasse-Maja line 322 departs Koön’s ferry stop, taking only a few minutes to reach Marstrand. Bring your bike free of charge.
