BOHUS FORTRESS IN KUNGÄLV
One of West Sweden's seven wonders For more than 700 years, Bohus Fortress has reigned by the river as a castle and defence fortification under different flags. Today, it is a popular destination that offers something for all ages – a cultural gem that has been voted one of the seven wonders of West Sweden. A site where history comes to life through activities, guided tours and experiences inside the solid walls.
PEACEFUL PLACE TO PLAY AND EXPLORE At the fortress you can visit exhibitions in the tower rooms or try your hand at activities such as the raft across the pond, the wooden tournament horse on rails, archery, horseshoe-throwing and other games. The path around Fästningsholmen offers a nice view of the Göta River all year. In summer, the fortress is open daily with guided tours and activities; during the rest of the year, events, music and entertainment are organised more sporadically.
For a long time, the city of Kungälv lived in the shadow of the fortress that was founded in 1308 to protect Norway's southernmost border from enemies. Picturesque cobblestone streets still run from the fortress down to the now vibrant city centre.
HISTORIC IMPACT Inside Bohus Fortress, you can learn a lot about its exciting history, landscape and local environment. Dramatised stories in contemporary dress bring the cannons, gunpowder smoke and history to life. And what was once a military defence and dreaded prison is now a peaceful, playful place with a very peculiar soul.
HISTORICAL CENTRE OF POWER AND CASTLE While Sweden, Norway and Denmark were united under one monarch from 1397 to 1523, the fortress functioned as a castle from where the Nordic countries were ruled. When Bohuslän became Swedish in 1658, the fortress lost its role as a Norwegian border defence. Its history is palpable as you pass through heavy gates, walk along the fortification walls, through corridors, towers and the protected courtyard surrounded by cannon rooms and dungeons.

CARLSTEN FORTRESS MARSTRAND
Where the past and present come to life For more than 350 years, Carlsten's fortress has been the iconic landmark of Marstrand, sitting high atop the island and shaping its life, silhouette and history. Today, it is a vibrant place with accommodation, activities, a café and restaurant. Carlsten's fortress is visible from all directions and captures your gaze whether you arrive by sea or road. Its history begins when Bohuslän became Swedish through the Roskilde Peace Treaty in 1658, when the then-king decided a fortress was to be built on the highest peak of the island.
WELL-PRESERVED AND INTACT FORTRESS The well-preserved fortress reflects the past, when it fell into enemy hands but was won back again. The paved courtyard holds the commander's house, the long-time home of Eiwe Svanberg who runs the guided tours, bringing visitors on a historical journey along winding tunnels, cobbled corridors, dungeons and tower rooms. -“It is an intact fortress and an active, living place with accommodation, restaurants, cafés and activities all year round,” says Eiwe, adding that even in its winter costume the fortress has a certain allure. CLOSELY BUILT COMMUNITY AND MAJESTIC NATURE From the quay, historic wooden houses line the narrow lanes up to the fortress. Car-free Marstrand is bursting with tourists, restaurant life and boat guests during summer. The pace is slower and visitors fewer during the rest of the year, when the landscape, sea and wind reign on the island. The five-kilometre hiking trail around the island is a natural spectacle, regardless of the season. It runs by the Smugglers’ Channel, caves, Troll Forest, Water Lily Pond and not least the Eye of the Needle, a passage between two boulders so narrow that you have to walk sideways through. The scenic trail passes places to rest, take in the views and have a swim. The gentle gaze of Carlsten's fortress rests above it all, safe and eternal. 6
LIVE LIKE A SOLDIER AT THE FORTRESS
Open all year, Soldathotellet offers comfortable accommodation behind the walls that once housed the fortress’ soldiers. Visitors stay in the Donjon or the Commandant's House. The Donjon is where the soldiers once lived, alongside cannons and ready to defend the harbour entrance. Built in 1775 for the Commander and upper class prisoners, and once housing Carlsten's only female prisoner, the Commandant's House today offers nice hotel rooms. Make sure you stop by Carlsten's waffle café right by the entrance gate, to enjoy the fragrant and genuine atmosphere, cosy outdoor seating and great food and drink.

The ferry takes 2 minutes and departs every 15 minutes during the day.

ART GALLERY AND HEALTH HOTEL
At the southern inlet to Marstrand lies the old defence building Södra Strandveket. Today it is an art gallery and state heritage building. This summer, its exhibitions include glass exhibition A New Horizon by Bertil Vallien (21 August to 19 September). Marstrand has been a place of healthy sea baths since the early 19th century. These days, the newly renovated Marstrands Kurhotell has revitalised the location’s spa history. Located next to the historic building Societetshuset, the retreat hotel offers a unique environment based on the 19th-century spa bath with focus on peace and quiet.

NORDIC WATERCOLOR MUSEUM
A creative meeting place for everyone Text: Anna Berglund
The Nordic Watercolor Museum last year celebrated 20 years as an internationally recognised art scene. Situated right by the wild sea, the museum is a popular destination that brings the world to Skärhamn and broadens horizons. A creative, open space for encounters between people, art and nature. For 20 years, the Nordic Watercolor Museum has been an inspiring place that wants to bring its visitors on a journey of discovery and experiences. An establishment that explores watercolours and offers a wide range of culture such as artistic development, events, performing arts, courses and workshops. A museum that explores conversation, freedom of speech, self-creation and emotions through the art of watercolours.
SUMMER EXHIBITION 2021 In 2021, the museum’s big event of the year will inevitably be the summer exhibition with none other than Friedensreich Hundertwasser, one of the internationally most famous artists of the post-war era. Hundertwasser was a painter, a visionary artist and ecological pioneer, whose work has never been more relevant than today. His work is bursting with colour and creativity and brings an appealing vitality and energy. Rebelling against the straight line, he broke new ground for a more human architecture in harmony with nature.
HUNDERTWASSER The focus of the exhibition is Hundertwasser's work from the early 1950s to late 1970s. The presentation includes works on paper in watercolor and mixed media, graphic works, tapestries and architectural models. The exhibition is produced in collaboration with The Hundertwasser Not-For-Profit Private Foundation in Vienna. Welcome to the Nordic Watercolor Museum! 8

There are five cultural trails on the island that will guide you through history.
15

SAUNA AND SWIM ALL YEAR Book a sauna and combine it with a fresh dip in the ocean – a perfect activity all year round! On the small island of Dyrön you’ll find the Dyröbastun sauna along the seaside trail Dyröleden. In Skärhamn, Tubbevikens Bad & Bastu overlooks the harbour entrance. Björholmens Marina also has a nice little sauna at the far end of the bridge and on Klädesholmen by Salt & Sill you’ll find a floating sauna with a hot tub on the roof. HERRING HEADQUARTERS Herring barrels have rolled along the island Klädesholmen for centuries and today, the herring tradition is preserved by restaurant Salt & Sill. 9 10
BOAT HOUSES BY VALSÄNG STRAND Five windswept timber boathouses with greying boards from the 18th century stand by Valsäng Strand in Stigfjorden’s nature reserve. Built at a time when fishing grew from a secondary industry, the boathouses still have their place in the landscape by the shallow bay. To get to the boathouses located at the end of the road at Toröd, you need to walk a few kilometres as the last gravel road is a private road with no parking. But Valsäng Strand is a site well worth the walk.
SKÄRHAMN - VIBRANT ALL YEAR Tjörn’s central township is shaped by its fishing and shipping history. The protected harbour is today a popular guest harbour. A walking path runs along the water and jetties from the south harbour. Stop for some shopping along the way or make a detour to Hamneberget with its alleys and maze of white wooden houses.
STENUNGSUND Stenungsund was transformed from idyllic seaside resort and agricultural centre when the petrochemical industry arrived in the 1960s. Today, it is a modern city offering shopping and culture close to the ocean and nature reserve Svartedalen.
11
RÅÖN AND JORDHAMMAR Outside the city centre, just before Ödsmål, in Jordhammar, a riding school and mansion lie next door to one another. The mansion offers great food, small musical events on the porch, weddings and bubble baths. During summer, horses graze on the seaside meadows down towards Råön, a peninsula with a special light and nature. On Råön, a path runs from a traditional outdoor dance floor to a pier where you can enjoy a picnic basket and swim.
12
SEASIDE RESORT THEN AND NOW Across the strait from Stenungsund’s city centre lies Stenungsön, a lush island that during the 19th century developed into a seaside resort. Inspired by the light and nature, several of the famous ”Gothenburg colourists” lived on the island periodically. Take a walk around the island or go for a swim at ”Hawaii” – the popular beach.
13
14
EXPERIENCE 18TH CENTURY MARIAGÅRDEN Along the river Stenunge å, not far from the city centre, You’ll find Stenunge Village, a well-preserved cultural environment that is home to 18-th century Mariagården. The homestead offers a glimpse into the past and in its beautiful garden is home to a greenhouse, conservatory, children’s garden, stone cellar and sheep house. By the river, where the trout jumps in autumn, a newly constructed mill shows you what it may have looked like in days gone by. Follow the nature path along the river and through a forest. During the summer a café operates at Mariagården.
15
EXPERIENCE THE WILDERNESS Svartedalen nature reserve is home to real wilderness, with large forests, rich fauna, rippling streams, glistening forest ponds and moss-covered paths. A good starting point is Bottenstugan by Ålevatten, which is passed by many of the walking trails.
CELEBRATE THE JOY OF DISCOVERY Slime running through your fingers, science-based quests, chemical processes and experiments that keep visitors’ curiosity alive – Molekylverkstan is an endless source of knowledge and playful discoveries. Best of all, it is open all year and admission is free. It is located in Kulturhuset Fregatten, alongside a cinema, library, art gallery and café. 17
KUNGÄLV Best known for the impressive Bohus Fortress, which has withstood wars and kings since 1308, and a city centre with a lingering smell of chocolate from its famous biscuit factory, Kungälv is a city where history still has a visible presence alongside modern urban life.
16 17 18 18
SHOPPING AND FIKA Kungälv city center offers shopping, cozy cafes and restaurants. There is something for everyone. FOREST TREASURES The nature reserve Svartedalen offers forest treasures, swimming spots, fishing and berry picking. Untamed nature thrives between walking paths between two and six kilometres in length, which can be combined for a longer hike. Discover the environment around Korsvatten and Timmervatten. THE FONTIN NATURE RESERVE The beautiful nature reserve Fontin offers varied nature; follow the Trollstigen path around the woodland lake Svarte Moss where a number of nice little trolls are hiding. Or choose one of the longer trails that take you along paths, roads and old cultural landscapes with stone fences and cottages. Kärleksstigen (Love Path) offers fantastic views of Kungälv. After your walk, treat yourself to a good coffee at Kotten Café & Konferens or some shopping and something to eat at Trankärrs källare.
19
ON A HIGH AT BRATTÖN Brattön in the southern part of Hakefjorden is a wellknown landmark, standing tall at 130 metres above sea level. The mythical island is also called Blåkulla’ (Blue Hill) and legend has it, it’s a witches’ meeting place. Brattön’s landscape is dramatic with grassed plateaus, deep ravines and steep mountain walls. Travel to Brattön by ferry from Rörtången.
20
WILD WATERFALL AT LYSEGÅRDEN In Lysegården's nature reserve you can experience the forest’s magic and mossy paths, and silence and birdsong simultaneously. The 29-hectare area is protected by the EU for its species diversity and powerful nature. In the middle of the reserve, the waterfall Vallerån rushes 38 metres down the mountain Örnekulan 38 meters. It's Amazing to stand at the bottom and watch the free-falling water while feeling the draught. Sea trout reproduces at Vallerån on its journey out into the Göta River. Parking is available at Lysegårdens Golfklubb, from where you just walk through the golf course's small roads to reach the wilderness.

Kayaking is not only a summer activity – spring and autumn kayaking are extraordinary experiences. Pitch your tent for a complete nature experience, choose a day trip, or stay the night in a guest house or hotel and enjoy a great dinner. Our kayak operators offer kayak hire, guided tours, courses and accommodation packages.
PADDLING TIPS FROM ORUST Orust Kajak enjoys a protected location by Stocken’s Camping. It is always possible to kayak here as there are protected waters in all directions. In just an hour, you can reach charming Gullholmen. Paddling south gets you to Käringön in 1,5 hours. Visiting Härmanö Huvud is a must! You get to the nature reserve in about one hour from Orust Kajak. Camping is not allowed, but you can enjoy paddling among hundreds tiny islands and skerries. There are lagoons, narrow water furrows, and a sandy beach with a view of the open horizon. If you want to stay longer, there are lovely spots for your tent on neighbouring Vallerö!
PADDLING TIPS FROM TJÖRN The waters outside Rönnäng on Tjörn are perfect for kayaking. We recommend paddling east from Kajaktiv and Bleket. Choose between the inner route via Kalvsund past Rönnäng and the outer route via the island Väggen and on towards Åstol whose protected harbour is perfect for a break before continuing along Hakefjorden inner archipelago. Paddle on to the protected island Kärrsön with narrow straits and valleys. If you feel like camping, we recommend the island Katten, an amazing island with beaches and a perfect spot to pitch your tent on the north-eastern side.

The environment and people benefit from more people pedalling than driving a car. Filling your lungs with oxygen and discovering nature from the saddle is a fast-growing urge that South Bohuslän can meet – and then some.

Welcome to enjoy swimming – all year round. Whether you prefer salty ocean swims or the smooth water of lakes, few things beat a great day by the water. FISHING FOR ALL TASTES Södra Bohuslän offers a unique Fjord region with lots of islands, deep banks, strong currents and large sections of shallow waters. Overall, the fjord area is extremely productive and offers very good conditions for fishing. Many people travel here to experience sea trout fishing close to the shore. And during summer, large shoals of mackerel swim into the fjords where they can be caught from land and from boats. Out at sea, deep sea-fishing offers everything from cod and pollock to ling and other exciting deep sea species. There are also several lakes offering excellent fishing for pike, perch and zander. The archipelago environment of the fjords offers unrivalled fish conditions with everything from strong tidal currents to shallow sand bays and cliffs lashed by waves. April 1 marks the premiere for sea trout fishing and is
the start of many people’s fishing season. Sea trout fishing in shallow waters with sporadic vegetation is an extraordinary experience. When summer begins, and the water warms up in June, steep cliffs and capes offer the best spots for trout fishing. The mackerel also arrives, chasing sand eel and other small fish along cliffs and jetties. If you don’t have a boat, your best bet is hiring a guide or joining a fishing tour. It’s also possible to fish for mackerel and trout straight from land. DO YOU NEED ACCOMMODATION? There are many types of accommodation a short walk from fishing spots. Many keen fishers stay at Hotell Solliden, Salt & Sill, Stenungsbaden Yacht Club, Lådfabriken and Hotell Varvet.

BREATHE IN THE CALM AFTER THE STORM
Remember September
Experiencing the Swedish West Coast in September is a bit like visiting ski resorts during the summer. It’s the same place, yet different. Something has happened. A mysterious charm has emerged. It is the calm after the storm.
30
ONE OF EUROPE’S MOST BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURE PARKS Those wanting to visit southern Bohuslän in September, can expect many experiences. In Skärhamn on Tjörn you can combine culture with a stroll on the docks, shopping in small unique shops and Swedish fika. Walk or cycle on to Skulptur in Pilane, the cultural landscape that was named one of Europe’s most beautiful sculpture parks by The Guardian in 2016. After a walk among stone walls and gigantic artworks, we recommend spending a night at Sweden’s first floating hotel, Salt & Sill, on Klädesholmen. If you’re an early riser, you can rent a kayak at Kajaktiv in Bleket and explore one of Sweden’s best kayaking waters – it’s absolutely magical in the morning light! Next door, there is an amazing sourdough bakery; Lotta´s Bak & Form. Don´t miss out!

DISCOVER KÄRINGÖN ON FOOT The significantly smaller and car-free island of Käringön can’t compete with Tjörn’s rich cultural offerings. Here, barren cliffs and narrow alleys filled with white wooden houses are the attraction. To get there, you drive up to Orust and catch the ferry from Tuvesvik. Stroll around Käringön’s charming shops. A stop at the fish shop is always great; If you are lucky you will see when the crayfish are being cooked. Enjoy the delights of the ocean and other goodies at one of the restaurants. Despite the small size of the island, there are several places of different price ranges to stay, from hotels to hostels. On the way home to the mainland, you can stop at Gullholmen and see the mix of archipelago villas on what is probably Sweden’s most densely populated island. Make sure you also take a walk among heather moorlands and barren cliffs in one of Bohuslän’s largest nature reserves, Härmanö.

‘FIKA’ IN SOUTHERN BOHUSLÄN Fika – a typically Swedish and much-loved phenomenon. Over a cup of coffee and fragrant baked goods, we make contacts, chat, and enjoy ourselves. In southern Bohuslän you can ’fika’ (yes, it’s a verb too!) accompanied by history, the ocean, cultural settings and art. Home-baked and locally produced in consideration of sustainability and the evironment. Take a trip to one of these welcoming cafés. Or pack your own Picnic basket and head into nature.
34
The scent of coffee and sound of screaming seagulls and waves below the jetty. Or whining autumn winds outside, frost patterns on the windows, or the year’s first outdoor fika in the early spring sunshine. The seasons shape the café life of southern Bohuslän. Here, we’ve stopped by a few local spots, but there are many more to discover in our region’s rich café culture. DELICIOUS BAKED GOODS TO GO Enjoying a surge in popularity as more people recognise its health benefits, sourdough bread keeps your stomach happy, and promotes absorption of nutrients and minerals. Small organic bakery Åsas i Kareby bakes mainly sourdough bread but also delicious pastries and other baked goods perfect for the picnic basket. Nearby, Skåra gårdsbageri’s organic dairy, jams, marmalade, sourdough pizzas and lunch are made with love from locally grown produce. Enjoy a coffee and a bite to eat onsite or bring home some coffee from the local coffee roaster. COFFEE IN HISTORICAL SETTING Further out towards the archipelago, Tofta Herrgård and Magasinet serve up great coffee spots by rolling golf courses, a tree-lined avenue and in the next-door nature reserve. You can also enjoy a coffee at the farmstead’s storehouse, dating back to the 16th century, and its leafy outdoor terrace with playground and views of green meadows and the stable's Icelandic horses. HISTORIC FEEL At Fröken Trulls in Ellös, antique interiors, baked good and homemade meals create a homely environment, while delicate porcelain cups and various traditional biscuits add an old-fashioned feel. Serving lunch, coffee and Sunday brunch, it is set among home-grown vegetables, berries and herbs used for cooking and baking. Visitors can find bargains from all around Sweden in its antique shop.

CAR-FREE ISLANDS
to long for
The islands of the Bohuslän archipelago all have their own character. Its residents have lived a hard life at times, sometimes isolated and vulnerable, surrounded by the ocean that gives and takes. Today, these car-free islands offer space to breathe and natural experiences within easy reach by regular ferries all year. Outside ORUST, KÄRINGÖN is situated far out in the archipelago. Boasting mighty views of the ocean, its western side starkly contrasts the snug maze of wooden houses and paths around the island. GULLHOLMEN is one of the oldest fishing communities in Bohuslän. The ferry departs Tuvesvik, taking ten minutes to reach Gullholmen and 45 minutes to Käringön.
A short ferry ride across the strait brings you to the island of MARSTRAND. Stroll along tiny alleys, trendy boutiques and lovely restaurants. The island also offers wonderful hiking trails. The ferry departs Koön’s ferry stop, taking only a few minutes to reach Marstrand.
Buy your tickets via västtrafik´s card chargers, the to go app, on machines in the harbour or on board the ferry. 36
HÄRÖN outside Kyrkesund is only five minutes away by boat. The ferry departs from the Kyrkesund jetty. An amazing hiking trail runs through the island’s nature reserve. The car park is located a 10 min walk from the ferry.
LILLA BRATTÖN outside Stenungsund is a picturesque holiday island with great swimming opportunities. M/S Granita services Lilla Brattön during summer only, departing from Almön. Buy tickets on board. For more information visit www.granita.se
TJÖRN gems DYRÖN and ÅSTOL are lively neighbours with different characteristics. The larger island, Dyrön is home to a popular hiking trail, sauna, and freely grazing mouflon sheep. Meanwhile, Åstol is a barren rock island, where houses cling tightly together along the mountain. M/S Hakefjord line 361 departs Rönnäng’s jetty, taking 15-20 minutes to Åstol and Dyrön’s north harbour.
37
HÄRÖN - ISLAND HOME OF RARE PLANTS In addition to its magnificent and unique nature, beautiful Härön island and its nature reserve, offer fantastic trails of varied lengths, and great food and drink at Magasinet, which is also open for accommodation from this summer.

Several hiking trails bring walkers through the island's nature reserve, including a five-kilometre loop with rest area, wind shelter and barbecue area that makes up an independent stage of the Kuststigen coastal trail. “We are extremely happy and proud that the loop has been identified as a suitable part of Kuststigen,” says Olle Wängborg, trail development project manager at Västkuststiftelsen ( West Coast Foundation).
Don’t miss the magnificent view of the southern part of the hike – from the highest point in the south, you can see the silhouette of both Carlsten's fortress and the lighthouses Trubaduren and Pater Noster if the weather is on your side.
MAGNIFICENT VIEWS In addition to the coastal path, there are other trails between three and seven kilometres of varying difficulty. “Last year we built a new three-kilometre trail along the rocks by the ocean,” says nature reserve supervisor Uno Holmberg, who is also responsible for the care of the island’s historic farm Änga.
ÄNGA FARMSTEAD Historic farmstead Änga Gård in the island’s south is the only surviving farm of the post-war era and is today owned by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The narrow field plots are still cultivated, and in July, harvest is celebrated. The outfields are managed by grazing animals. There is a wind shelter and toilet at Änga farmstead.

FLORA & FAUNA Dominated by bare, rocky terrain and known for its unique nature, Härön is a paradise for flora and fauna enthusiasts who can get close to bird life and plants such as the lesser butterfly orchid, yellow-rattle, nightshade, wormwood and other rare plants. Poppies also grow at Änga. EAT WELL & STAY OVERNIGHT Gastronomic gem Pea & Rosenberg at Magasinet makes sure no one needs to go hungry, serving up meals made from high-quality ingredients and with a lot of love. Mussels, shrimp sandwiches, a bunch of small dishes and a fantastic drink list is guaranteed. This summer, it also opens the doors to six new hotel rooms in late June.

Adventures of SUNDSBY SÄTERI From the croaks of frogs in spring and beech forests’ bursts of colour in autumn to wonderful summer holidays and the tranquility of frosty winter landscapes, heritage manor Sundsby Säteri is a place for all seasons – a world of its own nature and culture.
WALKING TRAILS AND CLIMBING TREES Long or short hike? At Sundsby Säteri, you can choose from five lovely walking trails. The children's favourite will probably be Iver's forest walk with its exciting climbing trees and fun stations where children can learn more about nature and life at the manor in the 17th century. Here you will also find the old Springareken, believed to be one of the world's oldest oaks at about 900 years old. The trails also offer fantastic views at Solklinten, beautiful beech forests and exciting "caves" formed by fallen boulders. If you need a meal break, there are rest and barbecue areas along several of the trails. The Sundsby trails are part of the Kuststigen coastal hiking trails and routes along Bohuslän coast. Find more information about Kuststigen at kuststigen.se
KITCHEN GARDEN, FARM CAFÉ, FARM SHOP & SILVERSMITHERY Be inspired in the fantastic kitchen garden and learn more about how crops grow and become food. Here you can 40
learn about organic farming close to nature. Sundsby has always been a place of cultivation and has reintroduced several historic species, such as grey peas. Don’t miss the chance to sneak a peek into the nineteenth-century wine cellar behind the gardener's residence,

where grapes still grow on vines that are over 100 years old. At farm café Margaretas Kök & Skafferi you can enjoy a good coffee and tasty lunch, as well as the chance to taste what’s growing in the kitchen garden. The manor’s buildings are home to different activities; in the Magasinet warehouse you’ll find exquisite products by silversmith Silver Wijk and in Fårhuset (Sheep house) the farm shop Vår gård Hultet sells flowers, décor and woodwork.
MARGARETA HUITFELDT, ONE OF BOHUSLÄN'S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN Sundsby Säteri exudes culture and history. A farm was established here as early as 1388, but its most touching story may be that of Margareta Huitfeldt's life. She lived on the manor with her family during the 17th century, before losing her children and husband and continuing to live there alone. Expanding her property to more than 600 farms, she had become one of Bohuslän's most powerful women by the time she died. Both young and old will be interested in finding out more about the story of Margareta Huitfeldt's life in 17th century Sweden in one of the manor wings. In summer, guided tours of the park further explore the history of the manor.

LIGHTHOUSE, CASTLE, FORTRESS, HEN HOUSE OR BOX FACTORY - where will you stay? Extraordinary accommodation can enhance any holiday and in Bohuslän there are many unusual and amazing types to choose from. Castle, hen house, box factory – the possibilities are endless! Why not stay in a lighthouse keeper's home on the horizon at what may be one of the world's most famous lighthouses?
www.paternoster.se
PATER NOSTER – A HOME ON THE HORIZON Built in 1868 on the small barren and windswept island Hamneskär, between Marstrand and Tjörn, Pater Noster is the lighthouse on the horizon. Last summer, a hotel focused on luxury opened in the old lighthouse keeper's residence. One of the co-owners, Erik Nissen Johansen, believes the meaning of "luxury" has changed significantly in the past 25 years. “Today, luxury is about a poetic experience. Here, we live on the island's premises, utilise the island's riches like seaweed, flowers and seafood.” WORLDWIDE ATTENTION Pater Noster has attracted the attention of newspapers and magazines all over the world, has won several awards – such as The Gold Key Awards – and been involved in several PR collaborations. For example, the 25 nominees in each of the Oscars categories ‘best actor’, 46
‘best actress’, ‘best supporting actor/actress’ and ‘best director’ will receive an overnight stay at Pater Noster in their goodie bags. Once home to the family of the resident lighthouse keeper, today it offers 24 beds in nine designer hotel rooms. If you like high ceilings, you should try the best room of the summer – the bed out on the rocks with only the starry sky above. The Pater Noster archipelago environment offers great variety, from winter storms to glittering summer seas. The magical view from the island includes seals resting on their favourite skerries, the open sea and Carlsten's fortress. During summer, visitors enjoy great food and coffee in the old boathouse's summer café. Desalinated and purified seawater is used on the island, making the coffee, brewed from the beans of a small coffee roastery in Gothenburg, taste extra good.
COSY CASTLE STAY With Svartedalen's magical old-growth forest as the nearest neighbour, the castle Thorskogs Slott offers accommodation in a beautiful setting with delicious food. The castle hosts wilderness days, cooking activities, murder mysteries, chocolate, wine and champagne tastings and other activities. The park is also home to a six-hole pitch & put course, wood-fired jacuzzi and sauna. www.thorskogsslott.se
COLOURFUL BOX FACTORY Owners Johan and Marcel have turned an old box factory in Edshultshall on Orust into vibrant and homely Bed & Breakfast Lådfabriken where you’ll feel right at home. At Lådfabriken, you don’t just book a room, but a whole experience – kayaks and bikes are included in the price. www.ladfabriken.eu HEN HOUSE & GRAIN STORE At the organic farm The Fork and Shovel in "Skedet" near Kållekärr on Tjörn, you live simply, beautifully and conveniently in the old hen house or in the grain store. The farm grows vegetables and makes its own cider and gelato. This year, it has added a ‘glamping van’ to the accommodation options, where couples can stay in a Britishfästning vintagemed caravan overlooking the apple orchard. Carlstens Soldathotellet. It includes an outdoor kitchen, fireplace and a private bathroom right next to the caravan. www.theforkandshovel.com
SLEEP LIKE A SOLDIER Situated at the top of Marstrand island, Carlsten's fortress’ Soldier Hotel offers accommodation with a difference; here you’ll enjoy a historic atmosphere with views of the island and the sea. Combine your stay with a captivating tour of the well-preserved fortress.
