BOHUS FORTRESS IN KUNGÄLV
One of West Sweden's seven wonders For more than 700 years, Bohus Fortress has reigned by the river as a castle and defence fortification under different flags. Today, it is a popular destination that offers something for all ages – a cultural gem that has been voted one of the seven wonders of West Sweden. A site where history comes to life through activities, guided tours and experiences inside the solid walls.
For a long time, the city of Kungälv lived in the shadow of the fortress that was founded in 1308 to protect Norway's southernmost border from enemies. Picturesque cobblestone streets still run from the fortress down to the now vibrant city centre. HISTORICAL CENTRE OF POWER AND CASTLE While Sweden, Norway and Denmark were united under one monarch from 1397 to 1523, the fortress functioned as a castle from where the Nordic countries were ruled. When Bohuslän became Swedish in 1658, the fortress lost its role as a Norwegian border defence. Its history is

palpable as you pass through heavy gates, walk along the fortification walls, through corridors, towers and the protected courtyard surrounded by cannon rooms and dungeons. PEACEFUL PLACE TO PLAY AND EXPLORE At the fortress you can visit exhibitions in the tower rooms or try your hand at activities such as the raft across the pond, the wooden tournament horse on rails, archery, horseshoe-throwing and other games. The path around Fästningsholmen offers a nice view of the Göta River all year. In summer, the fortress is open daily with guided tours and activities; during the rest of the year, events, music and entertainment are organised more sporadically. HISTORIC IMPACT Inside Bohus Fortress, you can learn a lot about its exciting history, landscape and local environment. Dramatised stories in contemporary dress bring the cannons, gunpowder smoke and history to life. And what was once a military defence and dreaded prison is now a peaceful, playful place with a very peculiar soul.
Do you dare to try the railhorse? Try archery
Bohus Fortress is an exciting place for both old and young.

NORDIC WATERCOLOUR MUSEUM Where art & nature meet In the small town of Skärhamn, you’ll find one of the region’s most popular attractions – the Nordic Watercolour Museum. World-class art attracts victors from all over the world, but the museum also offers a wide range of fun activities for both young and old. Concerts, courses, performance art, workshops and fun happenings make the place buzz all year around. With its unique location right on the waterfront you can combine your art experience with a dip from the jetty. The museum is a place where art, people and nature meet. Did you know that the Nordic Watercolour Museum has previously been awarded the title of museum of the year? Also, the stunning building is the result of an architectural contest – the largest contest in the Nordics at the time of the opening (year 2000). This spring’s big exhibition with the Swedish artist Gunilla Bergström – the creator of Alfons Åberg – will be followed by another legend: René Magritte (1898-1967). The exhibition is called “The laboratory of ideas” and it’s the first full-scale and exclusive exhibition by the artist in Sweden since 1967. Magritte is one of the masters of surrealism and his testimony is immeasurable – many of his pieces have become iconic. His paintings are mysterious, poetic and witty; you will probably recognise quite a few of them. René Magritte’s artwork on paper is left almost unexplored, even though it lay the foundation for the rest of his paintings. Some of the 250 exhibited pieces have never before been shown to the public. Paper was clearly a source of joy for the artist, and he used it as a laboratory for his ideas. Unlike his oil paintings, which took a lot of precision and patience, on paper he could let his creativity run free. The exhibition is put together by the Magritte specialists Julie Waseige and Xavier Canonne in collaboration with La Foundation Magritte. A warm and heartfelt welcome to the Nordic Watercolor Museum.

BIKE, HIKE & KAYAK
iday l o h o t y a w e l b a n i - a sus t a In Sweden, we have a fantastic natural environment to spend time in, and to take care of. If you choose to hike, bike or kayak, you do not only get an amazing experience in nature, you are also holidaying in a way that is both climate-smart and sustainable. Feeling the calm and soaking up a great view during a short or long hike is very special. South Bohuslän offers hiking for all ages and abilities. We also recommend experiencing the silence and enjoying our rich wildlife during a gentle kayak through some of our waters. If you’d rather get there by bike, there are many different distances to choose from. All experiences that don’t leave a climate footprint behind. Spending time and taking part in nature is a luxurious way to holiday.

KAYAKING AND SUP BOARDING The islands in the Bohuslän archipelago offer one of the world’s most beautiful paddling waterways for both beginners and pros. Choose between open water or protected bays with plenty of opportunities to hop ashore. You can kayak all year around and, in most weather, it all has its charm. A day out in the kayak under a clear blue sky on a glittering glassy sea does sound amazing. But even a grey misty day can be a magical paddling experience. Late summer and autumn you are most likely to. have the archipelago to yourself. Winter paddling is something else and springtime – when everything is waking up – is the perfect time to explore small bays and beaches.
PRETTY PLACES FOR PADDLING
There are lots of trails to choose from here in Bohuslän, amongst thousands of cliffs and shores. If you are paddling on a SUP, inland and sheltered waters are recommended. In a kayak you can head a bit further out.
ORUST Glide around in the sheltered waters around one of Evert Taube’s favourite areas, Malö and Flatön. It’s a fun experience to kayak along the streamy waters by Malö strömmar. Western Orust has an archipelago full of little islands in open water. You’ll get a longer tour if you paddle from Stocken or Ellös towards Gullholmen, Kärringön and the prettly little island Vallerö, famous for its white sandy sea floor.
TJÖRN Stigfjorden is located between Orust and Tjörn – a place full of little bays and islands to explore. An exciting paddling adventure around Tjörn is to round Klädesholmen in a kayak or to take a tour from Bleket towards Åstål, Dyrön and the little island Katten with its pretty beaches.
KUNGÄLV AND MARSTRAND Around Marstrand you’ll find both open water and sheltered areas on the lee side of all islands. On a windless day – how about a SUP-tour around Marstrand? Make sure not to miss the sunset by the northern inlet on a summer’s day. Another good place to start kayaking or SUP boarding in Kungälv is Tjuvkils huvud. Aim towards Lökeberg and around Brattön with a stop by the beach between Brattön and Älgön.
STENUNGSUND Here you’ll find a lot of good water for both kayak and SUP. Start by Surfviken and take the tour around Stenungsön or up towards Farholmen’s beautiful beaches. Take a tour between the leafy islands Stora and Lilla Askerön. You’ll get some good views along the way if you head south towards Getskär and Timmerviken, and lots of beautiful little islands to hop on to.

GET ON YOUR BIKE Cycling is a huge sport internationally and the bike is becoming an increasingly appealing way to get around. No surprises there. The environment and people benefit from more people pedalling than driving a car. Filling your lungs with oxygen and discovering nature from the saddle is a fast-growing urge that South Bohuslän can meet – and then some.

HIKING FOR ALL AGES Hiking in southern Bohuslän gives you an experience with extra everything. There are many, beautiful and contrasting hiking trails, with something to suit all hikers, whether experienced or beginner, old or young.
South Bohuslän offers unique hiking right by the water, with cliffs, jetties, boat houses and breathtaking views of the sea. The rich animal life and vegetation will fascinate you along the way. You will find this seaside hiking both on the mainland and on the islands in the archipelago. If you prefer to hike amongst the greenery, there are several trails offering just that.
LOTS TO CHOOSE FROM There are many hiking trails to choose from in South Bohuslän and you will easily find your one that suits you. Trails run from around one kilometre and upwards. There are several businesses who will tailor your forest adventure with good food and the right equipment.
South Bohuslän offers several hikes that are suitable for children. Shorter treks with picnic areas with climbing trees, beaches, cows, ravines and caves as a goal can make even the youngest ones walk faster. There are also several trails you can take with a running buggy, buggy or wheelchair.
HIKING OVER NIGHT Hiking doesn’t necessarily need to be a daytrip. There are opportunities to set up a tent or – for the more daring – sleep in a windbreak or under the star. If you want a bit more roof over your head, there are several trails that offer charming places to stay, quite often with locally produced food included.
Sweden Westcoast Experiences tailor your hiking holiday and help you find the right equipment. Art of Adventures offer overnight stays in tipi-style tents in Svartedalen, amongst other things. Lo Bikes offer adventures in the forest with team building and cooking.

THE RIGHT OF PUBLIC ACCESS Don’t disturbe – don’t destroy The Right of Public Access (Allemansrätten) is fantastic, and it gives everyone the right to easily roam free in nature. But with this right come responsibilities – to take care of nature and wildlife and to show consideration for landowners and for other people enjoying the countryside. You may cycle, swim and kayak almost everywhere, but different rules apply to our nature reserves, where you cannot put up a tent or make a fire. Use designated barbeque spots or outdoor kitchens. Read more about The Right of Public Access on naturvardsverket.se and make sure to enjoy our nature.

FISHING ADVENTURES & BOAT TRIPS Welcome to our unique fjord area with lots of hidden and exciting spots for fishing. The spring comes with world-class sea trout fishing, summer brings the mackerel and autumn is the prime time for shellfish. Many travel to this part of the world to experience the close-to-land sea trout fishing. During the summer months, large shoals of mackerel find their way into our fjords and can be fished from both land and boat. Out at sea you can fish for cod, pollock, ling and other exciting deep-sea species. SEA TROUT FROM APRIL 1st The archipelago in the fjords offers a seldom-seen fishing environment with everything from rushing tidal streams to shallow beach bays and cliffs hard hit by waves. April 1st is the first day for sea trout fishing and the starting point of the fishing season for many. Sea trout fishing in shallow water is an unmissable experience. MACKEREL FISHING With summer comes the mackerel, chasing after small fish close to rocks and jetties. If you don’t have a boat of your own, rent a guide or try your fishing luck together
with others on a boat trip. You can also fish for mackerel and trout from land using a spinning rod or a fly-fishing rod. GO FISH! On Strandvägen in Stenungsund, you’ll find the fishing equipment shop Björns Fiske och Jakt – they know everything about fishing! If you want to know which fish are in season, where to find them and what you need for a successful trip – visit the shop! On Koön, Marstrands Sportfiske are ready to help you with everything you need for your fishing. Enjoy a coffee on the jetty while you plan your fishing trip. If you want to go fishing in a lake you need a permit. For fishing in Hällungen, Håltesjön, Ålevatten and N. Långevatten in Svartedalen – you can get day permits or year permits. Lakes in Svartedalen with game fish require day permits. All hand-gear fishing in the sea is free. TAKE A SHELLFISH TOUR Autumn is the best time to enjoy our amazing shellfish. If you want to attempt to fish for the black gold of the sea, lobster, you are best of joining a shellfish tour. The langoustines are also at their prime during autumn, when the sea temperature is dropping.

The best locally produced FIKA Fika, a much-loved Swedish word and phenomenon. Over freshly brewed coffee and newly baked buns we connect, we chat, we enjoy and let the flavours flow. In South Bohuslän, you can have fika close to history, art, the sea and nature. You will find cafés giving you that little extra; well worth a detour. Join us for a tour around some of these unique bakeries and cafés.
36
ARTISAN BAKING TO TAKE AWAY The healthy sourdough bread makes bellies happy and helps the uptake of nutrition and minerals – something that a lot of artisan bakers have discovered. In the small eco-bakery Åsas i Kareby, sourdough bread is the focus, but you can also buy amazing fika bread, perfect for the picnic basket. Not far from there you’ll find Skåra gårdsbageri, baking sourdough bread, buns, pizzas, and a superb lunch option, all made with local produce and great care. Take a seat in the cosy orangery or in the garden, where you might be accompanied by the friendly farm goats. In Bleket on Tjörn you can find the award-winning and much talked about Lottas Bak&Form, a small sourdough bakery right by the sea. Everything is made from scratch with ecological and locally sourced ingredients. It’s a beautiful experience to enjoy a breakfast basket or a sourdough pizza on the veranda whilst overlooking the sea. COFFEE IN AN HISTORICAL PLACE If you travel further out in the archipelago, you’ll come across Tofta Herrgård – a place for fika next to a lush golf course and an impressive avenue. The nature reserve close by is also a perfect spot for outdoor fika. The warehouse on the estate dates back to the 16th century and you can enjoy a coffee in their lush outdoor area. It comes complete with swings, a playground, a beautiful view over meadows and the Icelandic horses from the stable on the estate. For more fika in a similar environment, head for the northeastern parts of Orust and Tollös Fårgård and their lovely garden café, beautiful sheep stable and farm shop. FIKA, ANTIQUES AND VINTAGE At Fröken Trulls in Ellös you can enjoy fika in a great atmosphere – it’s a mix of antique interior, pretty pastries, cute little rooms and good food. The whole place has a feeling of tea parties from the olden days with fine china and a wide variety of homemade cakes. You can enjoy your fika inside, among all the antique items or outside in the beautiful garden – home to Morlanda handelsträdgård and a unique Geranium museum. You can of course buy every piece of furniture in the building, as Fröken Trulls is an antique shop too. You’ll find more vintage with fika at Kullens Gård in Stenungsund. SCULPTURE IN PILANE Nature and sculpture
In the middle of the beautiful landscape, amongst well-preserved nature, ancient remains and grazing sheep, you’ll find world-class sculptures! Pilane is an internationally-known success and crowned one of Europe’s 10 best sculpture parks by the British newspaper The Guardian. New and exciting art arrives every summer but the iconic Anna i Pilarna by Jaume Plensa remains high up on the mountain. It is known for being one of the world’s largest and most beautiful pieces of art. Pilane is nature’s own gallery, an experience suitable for all ages. You can see for miles and miles over Västerhavet and the glimmering Bohuslän archipelago – from Carlstens fortress and the lighthouse Pater Noster in the south to Käringön and the Måseskär lighthouse in the north. During 2022 the following artists are participating: Anna Fasshauer, Kent Karlsson, Hns Gothlin, Lena Flodman, Ian Newbery, Berth Johansson and Ingela Palmertz along with the permanent pieces by Jaume Plensa, Tony Cragg and Ida Koitila. TJÖRN - ISLAND OF ART On Tjörn you can easily combine art and nature. Cycle, run or hike along the beautiful trail taking you from Pilane to more amazing art at the Nordic Watercolor Museum in Skärhamn. The trail is signposted and will take you across fields, through oak forest and winding paths towards jetties and boathouses.

Adventures of SUNDSBY SÄTERI From the croaks of frogs in spring and beech forests’ bursts of colour in autumn to wonderful summer holidays and the tranquility of frosty winter landscapes, heritage manor Sundsby Säteri is a place for all seasons – a world of its own nature and culture. WALKING TRAILS AND CLIMBING TREES Long or short hike? At Sundsby Säteri, you can choose from five lovely trails. The children's favourite will probably be Iver's forest walk with its exciting climbing trees and fun stations where children can learn more about nature and life at the manor in the 17th century. Here you will also find the old Springareken, believed to be one of the world's oldest oaks. The trails also offer fantastic views at Solklinten, beautiful beech forests and exciting "caves" formed by fallen boulders. The Sundsby trail “Sundsbyleden” are part of the Kuststigen coastal hiking trails along Bohuslän coast. Find more information at www.westswedentrails.com
GARDEN, FARM CAFÉ, FARM SHOP & SILVERSMITHERY Be inspired in the fantastic kitchen garden and learn more about how crops grow and about organic farming close to nature. Sundsby has always been a place of cultivation and has reintroduced several historic species, such as grey peas. At the farmcafé Margaretas Kök & Skafferi you can enjoy a good coffee and tasty lunch, as well as the chance to taste what’s growing in the kitchen garden. Enjoy some good “fika” in the garden or bring it on your hike. The manor’s
buildings are home to different activities; in the Magasinet warehouse you’ll find exquisite products by silversmith Silver Wijk.
MARGARETA HUITFELDT, ONE OF BOHUSLÄN'S MOST POWERFUL WOMEN Sundsby Säteri exudes culture and history. A farm was established here as early as 1388, but its most touching story may be that of Margareta Huitfeldt's life. She lived on the manor with her family during the 17th century, before losing her children and husband and continuing to live there alone. Expanding her property to more than 600 farms, she had become one of Bohuslän's most powerful women by the time she died. Both young and old will be interested in finding out more about the story of Margareta Huitfeldt's life in 17th century Sweden in one of the manor wings. In summer, guided tours of the park further explore the history of the manor.

CAR-FREE ISLANDS
to long for
The islands of the Bohuslän archipelago all have their own character. Its residents have lived a hard life at times, sometimes isolated and vulnerable, surrounded by the ocean that gives and takes. Today, these car-free islands offer space to breathe and natural experiences within easy reach by regular ferries all year.
From Tuvesvik on Orust it takes 10 minutes to get to Gullholmen and Härmanö. One part is the most densely built of any island in Sweden, with a large amount of fishing cottages and boat houses. The other part is Härmanö, one of Bohuslän’s largest nature reserves with beautiful hiking trails, beaches, moors, meadows and barren rocks. On the island you will find restaurants, a grocery store, a harbour, facilities for conferences and rental cabins with sauna and minigolf. There are also a few museums if you are looking for history and culture. Don’t miss the newly opened Grindebacken Strandhak inside the nature reserve.
LINJE 381
A short ferry ride from Koön’s ferry station takes you to Marstrand. The ferry is operated by Kungälvs Kommun and you can buy tickets via marstrandsfarja.se. You can also buy your ticket at the ferry station, and it is valid both there and back. On Marstrand you can stroll along the quay and explore the cosy cobbled streets with all their old Victorian houses. Don’t miss Carlstens Fortress on the top of the island. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and cafés here, and several hiking trails with magnificent locations right by Skallens lighthouse, where the two oceans Skagerrak and Kattegat meet.
WWW.MARSTRANDSFARJA.SE 40
The car-free island Käringön is far out at sea, and you can get there by taking the ferry from Tuvesvik on Orust. After a beautiful boat ride, you’ll be greeted by an island jammed with lovely little wooden houses. On the island there are several cafés, restaurants, an oyster bar, a fish monger, shops, a harbour, an hotel, conference facilities and a hostel. To stroll through the small alleys is like taking a stroll back in time, and as soon as you have left the buzzing harbour, you’ll find silence and peace in nature.
LINJE 381
From the jetty in the old fishing village Kyrkesund you can cross the strait and get to Härön in a couple of minutes. The eastern side of the island is most inhabited and here you will find Magasinet Härön – a hotel and restaurant by the sea. The island has amazing and varied nature with a reserve and hiking trails – heaven for anyone interested in flora and fauna. Take the hiking trail to the south side of the island, down to Holmudden, where you’ll get a view out of the ordinary.
LINJE 362 Lilla Brattön is a gem in Hakefjorden, right outside Stenungsund. It’s a cosy and green little holiday island with cottages, a restaurant, jetties and diving towers. In summertime you can get to the island from Almön on Tjörn with the ferry M/S Granita. Tickets are bought onboard.
WWW.GRANITA.SE Åstol is the unique little rock island with a great mishmash of white wooden houses on it, an almighty sight rising from the sea. You get to the island by ferry from Rönnängs brygga. You’ll be met by a horseshoe shaped harbour, tiny little winding roads and a little lush green park in the middle of the island. By Klockareudden you can go swimming in a natural saltwater pool with a slide and sandy floor. On the island you can find a restaurant, a smokery, café, art gallery, grocery store and museum
LINJE 361 From Rönnängs Brygga on Tjörn and from Rökan close to Marstrand you can hop on the ferry to Dyrön. The little green island with its varied and dramatic landscape has a lot to offer all year around. Go for a swim, have a sauna in Dyröbastun, hike on Dyröleden, visit the waffle café during the winter months, fika, enjoy good food, look out for the wild mufflon sheep, find rare plants, or just enjoy the magnificent views. The island has both accommodation and conference facilities.

LIGHTHOUSE, CASTLE, FORTRESS, WAREHOUSE OR BOX FACTORY – where would you like to stay? A hotel out of the ordinary can take your holiday to the next level, and in Bohuslän there are so many amazing options. A castle, a warehouse or a box factory – the possibilities are endless and you can choose whatever suits you. Why not stay in a lighthouse keeper’s lodge in the horizon next to perhaps the world’s most famous lighthouse?
www.paternoster.se
PATER NOSTER – A HOME ON THE HORIZON Pater Noster is the lighthouse built in 1868 on the small, barren and windblown island Hamneskär, between Marstrand and Tjörn. Here you can book a unique experience at the award-winning design hotel with an overnight stay and shellfish fresh from the sea. The luxurious hotel in the old lighthouse keeper’s lodge opened in summer 2020. One of the owners, Erik Nissen Johansen, says that “luxury” is a word whose meaning has changed a lot during the past 25 years. ¬– Today, luxury is more of a poetic experience. Out here, we live on nature’s premises and harvest the island’s treasures: seaweed, flowers and shellfish. KNOWN ALL ACROSS THE WORLD After careful renovation, the old lighthouse keeper’s lodge has been transformed into an award-winning hotel - thanks to the design agency Stylt Trampoli. With 30 years’ global experience they won first prize in one of the world’s biggest competitions – Gold Key Awards 2020. British newspaper The Telegraph awarded Pater Noster the most exciting newly opened 46
accommodation in 2020 and recently they were given the prize of world’s best hotel concept. The lighthouse keeper’s lodge has nine beautifully designed rooms with comfortable beds. If you like a high ceiling, try the best room of the summer: the bed outside on a cliff with the starry sky as the ceiling. The hotel’s interior and art are inspired by the history of the place, which makes the experience even more special and one of the world’s most spectacular hotels you can spend a night in. Don’t miss out on climbing 32 metres up to the top of the impressive lighthouse completely made of steel and iron with an amazing view over the island: the seals on their favourite rocks, the sea and the horizon. During the summer months you can enjoy good food and fika in the café in the old boathouse. The island uses de-salted and filtered sea water, and the coffee comes from a small coffee roastery in Gothenburg. You can relax in the salty sea, the heated hot tubs and in the lovely sauna.
COSY CASTLE STAY With Svartedalen's magical old-growth forest as the nearest neighbour, the castle Thorskogs Slott offers accommodation in a beautiful setting with delicious food. The castle hosts wilderness days, cooking activities, murder mysteries, chocolate, wine and champagne tastings and other activities. The park is also home to a six-hole pitch & put course, wood-fired jacuzzi and sauna. www.thorskogsslott.se
COLOURFUL BOX FACTORY Owners Johan and Marcel have turned an old box factory in Edshultshall on Orust into a vibrant and homely Bed & Breakfast Lådfabriken where you’ll feel right at home. At Lådfabriken, you don’t just book a room, but a whole experience – kayaks and bikes are included in the price. www.ladfabriken.eu
MAGASINET HÄRÖN On the car-free island of Härön, right on the waterfront, you’ll find the old oats warehouse – these days converted to hotel and restaurant. The rooms are newly renovated with a sea view. You can get to Härön by ferry from Kyrkesund.
