from the director I am delighted to welcome you to SOFA CHICAGO 2014! This year’s fair features 63 prestigious galleries from 14 countries. SOFA has always been an important global venue for contemporary and modern art and design, and this year’s impressive international presence emphasizes that SOFA CHICAGO continues to serve as the annual meeting place for the international world of art and design. It goes without saying that SOFA CHICAGO is not possible without our community of galleries, dealers, artists, curators, critics, and patrons. As we celebrate our 21st year, we are looking ahead to our next 20 years and more – always reflecting on where we have been, and striving to do more, and create a better fair each year. For this reason, we felt it was important to create a Host Committee for the first time in the fair’s history. Our Host Committee members have supported us for the past 20 years and they stand with us as we look ahead to the next 20! A heartfelt thank you to our inaugural Host Committee! We are excited to announce the return of two elements of the fair that we introduced in 2013: CONNECT and SOFA Selects. Both programs were launched in celebration of SOFA CHICAGO’s 20th anniversary. We are grateful and proud that each program was so successfully received and we are happy to announce that CONNECT and SOFA Selects will continue to be part of our annual fair. This year, CONNECT features six art and design universities who have each created dynamic environments featuring seating, lighting and objects. I encourage you to explore each school’s installation, learn about this next generation of artists and designers, and “connect” with your fellow fair visitors. We are thrilled to welcome Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY; University of California, Davis; University of Cincinnati – College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning, OH; University of Iowa, Iowa City; and University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Thank you to Chubb Personal Insurance and the Corning Museum of Glass for their generous support of CONNECT.
SOFA Selects also returns this year and we are excited to announce that our SOFA Selects participants have grown from last year. As you stroll through the show floor, you will notice SOFA Selects labels next to individual pieces. These are works that our SOFA Selects participants have noted as pieces they are excited to see at this year’s fair. Take advantage of this opportunity to see what noted curators, critics and designers are looking at and why they like them! Thank you to all of our SOFA Selects participants. This year’s Lecture Series presents nearly 30 panel discussions and talks with curators, artists, museums directors, scholars, collectors, and critics. There is a tremendous wealth of information presented by experts in our field and I hope you will seize the opportunity and attend as many of the Lectures as you can! The 2014 Special Exhibits feature five extraordinary exhibitions presented by: Anderson Ranch Arts Center; Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts; Collectors of Wood Art; Cranbrook Academy of Art; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts; Penland School of Crafts; Peters Valley School of Craft; Pilchuck Glass School; and Pittsburgh Glass Center. Be sure to see these innovative exhibits, as well as their lectures and essays on sofaexpo.com I would like to thank Chubb Personal Insurance, whose 10th year of generous support makes the SOFA CHICAGO VIP Lounge and special events possible. Chubb is also sponsoring CONNECT and we thank them for their commitment to contemporary art and design. Thank you, also, to our new sponsors, Kia, as the fair’s Official Automotive Partner, and Caesarstone, as the sponsor of the fair’s Central Bar. Finally, thank you to our Media Sponsors: Chicago Tribune, Modern Luxury and WBEZ. I hope you enjoy SOFA CHICAGO 2014 and I hope you make some exciting discoveries and connections at this year’s fair! Donna Davies Fair Director

SOFA CHICAGO 2014 SPECIAL EXHIBITS
Anderson Ranch: Mentoring Artistic Excellence
In 2016, Anderson Ranch Arts Center commemorates 50 years as a world leader in development of the visual arts through its renowned workshops, residencies, and visiting artist projects. This special exhibit celebrates the artists who have been active in the development of our programs, contributed to inspirational dialogue, and created a campus imbued with a spirit of community, challenge, and innovation. Whether they have been faculty, residents, students, or staff, the featured artists have truly embraced the Ranch’s spirit and reached the highest level of critical conversation in contemporary art. Presented by Anderson Ranch Arts Center
BEYOND BOUNDARIES: Wood Art for the 21st Century
The aesthetic landscape of the 21st century is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. Boundaries around how wood can be used as a medium for artistic expression, what it can look like, how it lives in space, how it is made, and how it relates to prior works are also shifting and changing. This special exhibit looks at select examples of how artists working across the spectrum of contemporary wood art are travelling in distinctly different directions, and what that might signify for the future of this diverse community. Presented by Collectors of Wood Art

Comfort Me
This special exhibit explores the theme of Comfort – a concept manifested as a sculptural form, socially engaged community practice, or digital output. Some pieces do this through the tactile connection we have with domestic objects while others are based on memories. The works included may not share the feeling of comfort with the viewer. In fact, many of the works struggle with the notions of stillness and contentment that comfort suggests. Through rigorous contemplation of the relationship between materials, form, and process, these artists invite the viewer to engage in a diverse conversation of the notion of comfort. Presented by Cranbrook Academy of Art
Idea Furnace
The Pittsburgh Glass Center invited 7 Pittsburgh-based artists to participate in the Idea Furnace: an experimental design program and residency to connect nonglass artists with master glass artists to encourage exploration in other art forms. Created to bridge the gap between glass and other art and design media, the Idea Furnace not only educates artists about glass, but also provides access to the material and new means to advance their ideas. The program also challenges established glass artists to think more broadly about the material. With fresh perspectives, the artists’ thoughtful explorations of the material result in new, interesting interpretations. Presented by Pittsburgh Glass Center
The Craft School Experience
Five of the leading US craft schools: Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts; Haystack Mountain School of Crafts; Penland School of Crafts; Peters Valley School of Craft; and Pilchuck Glass School have joined to launch a national initiative celebrating the importance of the craft school experience. While maintaining the individuality and distinction of each organization, this dynamic collective explores the values and communities that join them as a movement. Through their combined efforts they promote education and excellence in craft by emphasizing their unique opportunities for students.

Illinois Institute of technology
Envisioned as part of “Nowness,” IIT’s new approach is centered on re-thinking the metropolis. IIT’s College of Architecture team will design an installation as a public space, representing a gathering spot in a specific Chicago neighborhood. Students will explore the architect’s role in the making of a neighborhood. How can public space become a catalyst for the neighborhood? What new activities will emerge with cultural changes and technological advancements? Can we design new prototypes for public spaces in Chicago? How will the city of the future be re-shaped by these potential projects?
pratt institute
Pratt’s CONNECT proposal design is inspired by the topographic landscape of of Chicago; a union of the orthogonal grid lines of the city and the organic curvature of the soft water’s edge – the intersection of rigidity and fluidity; reticulation and smoothness. The space aims to connect SOFA visitors to the surrounding city (conceptually, with the layout inspired by the varied topography of Chicago), and to the Pratt community in Brooklyn (materially, by constructing the lounge utilizing byproducts and surplus material from everyday construction – orange construction mesh, and gray and white felt sourced from a local industrial stamp press).
University of California, Davis
“Think Davis” is premised on this idea of connections; the idea that design does not develop in or inhabit a bubble: but that it is, at a fundamental level, an evolving set of connections. Think Davis is comprised of a cluster of light emitting chairs connected by a translucent canopy. The chairs are organized over a printed map, showing the diverse array of subject matter that spark collaborations at UC Davis. Punctuated between the chairs are images and text of recent projects at Davis, highlighting interdisciplinary art and design practice.

University of Cincinnati
The University of Cincinnati’s CONNECT space represents to the students, faculty, and College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, projects with a purpose. DAAPcares, Out of Failure, and The Strange Wall collectively epitomizes research and experimentation at the University of Cincinnati across a broad spectrum of topics, techniques and disciplines, leveraged ultimately to address those in need and to teach that design is more than a market driven pursuit focused on aesthetics for capital gain, but a responsibility focused on making our world a better place.
University of Iowa
Led by Associate Professor Monica Correia, University of Iowa’s 3D Design Program team will create an environment for SOFA CHICAGO that reflects the University’s educational practices and research. It will be a temporary space that is collapsible for easy transport as well as set up. The design will aim to to reflect the functional nature of education within the 3D Design program.
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
Light will play a major, literal role within the concept and realization of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s spatial environment, but it is an equally important metaphorical tool. The goal with this project is to shed light, not just literally, but figuratively on the city of New Bedford whose glory days of wealth and prosperity have faded into the past, but whose creative history lives on. It is this creative energy that sustains the community, drawing new talent to the University and the city today.

AMERICA’S BEST ART COLLECTING MAGAZINE
JUST GOT BETTER.
In 2005 American Art Collector magazine transformed the art market for fine art painters by showcasing their works in the magazine before their shows even opened. By reading each issue, savvy collectors on the hunt for new paintings could quickly see and acquire new works coming up for sale coast to coast.
NOW IT’S YOUR TURN
Now—like never before—artists, galleries and collectors of Contemporary Decorative Objects will have a truly national magazine that gives them the same opportunity to show and collect beautiful pieces before they even go on sale. New monthly Glass, Ceramics and Wood sections in every issue will be edited by experts in their respective fields and will focus on the best works available for sale each month by top Contemporary Decorative Object artists across the country.
Glass
Contemporary glass is taking the art market by storm.
Ceramics Highlighting stunning pieces in porcelain and clay.
Wood
Beautiful highend objects that are reinterpreting the wood genre.
Bringing Artists, Galleries and Collectors Together. Why should fine art painters have all the limelight?

Breathing new life into luxury. The K900.
Over time, weve been led to believe that luxury is synonymous with legacy and heritage. While we respect the past, were more focused on the futureone thats innovative and progressive. We believe that luxury should not be defined by where it came from, but rather what it is. A luxury sedan is made from the finest materials available and comes equipped with the most advanced onboard technology. It is the perfect combination of power and performance, designed to instill a sense of exhilaration and confidence. While some may still be convinced that history is what makes a luxury sedan, we invite you to come to your own conclusion. The K900, TM from Kia. Challenge the luxury you know.
