FROM THE DIRECTOR Welcome to SOFA CHICAGO 2016, now in its 23rd year and one of the longest running art fairs in the country. This year’s fair features nearly 70 galleries representing more than 800 artists. We are excited to announce 16 galleries exhibiting with us for the first time as well as an international roster of galleries from ten countries. We thank all of our exhibitors, cultural partners, and attendees for their support and recognition of SOFA CHICAGO’s strong reputation as a dynamic, international fair dedicated to contemporary and modern art and design. The 2016 Lecture Series is an incredible schedule of nearly 30 dynamic lectures, panel discussions, and interviews. This year’s lineup is one of our most compelling and don’t miss these opportunities to hear from artists, curators, collectors, critics, and more. Speakers range from emerging talent to established luminaries and I encourage you to take full advantage of these discussions! This year’s Special Exhibits feature sensational presentations by: Ball State University, School of Art, College of Fine Arts; ChiArts: The Chicago High School for the Arts; Collectors of Wood Art; DIFFA; Gioelli in Fermento; Glass Art Society; and a special presentation of work by Judy Mulford presented by browngrotta arts. I hope each of these innovative installations will broaden your awareness of their organizations and artists.

We are thrilled to have our six universities participating in CONNECT this year with extraordinary design environments for this year’s student design competition. Each CONNECT plaza has been designed and installed by students from each university. Join me in welcoming these six prestigious schools and their talented students and faculty advisors: Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY; Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN; University of California, Davis, CA; University of Cincinnati-College of Design, Architecture & Planning, OH; and University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, IL. Thank you to Chubb Personal Risk Service and Corning Museum of Glass for their generous support of CONNECT. We are grateful for our sponsors, including Chubb Personal Risk Service, whose generous support for this 12th consecutive year, makes our SOFA CHICAGO VIP Lounge and special events possible. Chubb also sponsors CONNECT and we thank them for their commitment to contemporary art and design. Thank you, also, to Cadillac, our Official Vehicle of SOFA CHICAGO 2016, for their commitment to the legacy of art and design. We also thank our Media Sponsors Chicago Tribune, Modern Luxury, and WBEZ. A very warm welcome as well to our Host Committee, who work tirelessly to promote SOFA CHICAGO, our programming, and exhibitors. Welcome to SOFA CHICAGO 2016 and I hope you make some wonderful discoveries this year!

SOFA CHICAGO 2016 SPECIAL EXHIBITS

ART AND WINE: GIOIELLI IN FERMENTO

Gioielli in Fermento is an international exhibition project and award for contemporary studio jewelry. Situated in Italy’s winemaking region of the Emilian hills, established and emerging artists from every country are invited to express their relation with the wine world. Inspiration, dedication, experience, research, innovation, observation, choice, challenge: these are all elements of the creative approach used by a jewellery artist or a winemaker. Both a piece of jewellery or a sip of wine are evocative of the individual interpretation of the raw material chosen by their maker. In both cases, the aim is turning the natural into something precious and unique. Presented by Gioielli in Fermento, Ziano Piacentino, Italy

BSU SCHOOL OF ART: EMBRACING THE PAST, MAKING THE FUTURE

Ball State University’s School of Art encourages its undergraduate and graduate students to advance their individual voices by assisting them in identifying the materials and processes that best empower them. Faculty, students and alumni produce a broad spectrum of work ranging from functional design to sculptural and conceptual statements. This special exhibit demonstrates that while they come from diverse backgrounds, BSU’s art community is unified by producing objects that comment upon society and challenge traditional assumptions about media and disciplines. Presented by the School of Art, College of Fine Arts, Ball State University, Muncie, IN

CHIARTS: SHAPING THE UNIQUE AND DIVERSE VOICES OF CHICAGO’S YOUNG ARTISTS

Since 2009, ChiArts™ (Chicago High School for the Arts), Illinois’ first public arts high school, has been at the forefront of a national movement to build diversity in the arts in America. Created by the arts community of Chicago, ChiArts has become an international model of arts education and pre-professional training, and its alumni and students have amassed an impressive and prolific body of work. A selection of original artworks representing a unique and developing voice of the next generation of young artists who trained at ChiArts is on view. Presented by ChiArts, Chicago

LANDSCAPE OF GLASS IN AMERICA: BENCHMARK FOR THE FUTURE In November 2015, the Glass Art Society and Chihuly Garden and Glass partnered to conduct an in-depth study of the state of glass art in America with the intent of researching the most active regions for glass art, and providing a benchmark to measure future growth and trends in the industry. The special exhibit at SOFA will be the first full presentation of the research findings including the top five trends from the study affecting the glass community at large, and works of art to elucidate those trends from galleries exhibiting at SOFA. Presented by the Glass Art Society in collaboration with Chihuly Garden and Glass

LIFE : FIGHT : LOVE

Presented in honor of World AIDS Day on December 1, LIFE : FIGHT : LOVE animates the truths of HIV/AIDS and challenges the perception that the disease is “over.” No disease is over when it is remains a serious health issue for 36.9 people million across the globe. Designer and DIFFA/Chicago Executive Board member Richard Cassis of sparc, inc., along with designer and dedicated volunteer Jake Theisen, have created a “living room” for HIV/AIDS survivor Jim Petrakis. Jim will live in this intimate and challenging space throughout the fair. Visitors to LIFE : FIGHT : LOVE will come away moved and inspired to join Jim and DIFFA Chicago to fight HIV/AIDS and support the search for a cure. Presented by DIFFA/Chicago

WHY WOOD? CONTEMPORARY PRACTICE IN A TIMELESS MATERIAL

The practice of woodworking spans millennia and parallels the trajectory of human achievement. Wood continues to provide inspiration to emerging generations of makers across a spectrum of creative practices. As concern for the sustainability and conservation of natural resources intensifies, artists continue to explore the properties of this increasingly rarified material. Through contemporary works that push the boundaries of the material and mine its properties for inspiration, we encounter the eternal qualities of wood that perpetuate dialogues between makers and material. Presented by Collectors of Wood Art

ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The IIT/ Design Proposal for CONNECT is a collaborative work effort produced within the IIT Design Build culture. The collective emphasis will be on “making” and that intervention within the built environment, specifically typological elements that make up gathering and seating. The sculptural objects will use both digital and hand fabrication methods. Elements that embody space activation. The installation at SOFA CHICAGO will be the culmination of the semester design process.

8

PRATT INSTITUTE

Poché is a French architectural term meaning the space between. Our CONNECT installation will create an inhabitable poché/space between reflecting the temporal nature of the figure space between the boundaries of the ground plane and skyline edge of Chicago. The interior space between is temporal, seasonal, and can be customized by its inhabitants, which significantly distinguishes it from the more permanent structures within which it resides. Our environment will make time palpable similarly to the Quaking Aspen, a fast growing but short lived tree native to Chicago whose leaves tremble in the powerful Chicago winds causing a constant shift in form.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY

The theme of Purdue’s CONNECT space is Natural Urban Environment. Using Bauhaus principles of quotidian materials and found materials, we will create a space that reflects financial economy and creativity, with references to natural iconography such as leaves and insects. When first discussing how we would proceed and what materials to use, we decided that there is enough waste material in our art and design building at Purdue that has been left over from projects made in classes in the areas of industrial design, sculpture, ceramics and textiles. We decided to utilize these and allow the materials to drive our creativity.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DAVIS

As we began brainstorming themes for our CONNECT installation, we decided to look at UC Davis as an institution to understand what makes our experience as design students unique. Ideas ranged from the interdisciplinary nature of the university to themes based on our location in Northern California. We settled on highlighting the role of freedom of speech. We also looked to structures on our own campus—the UC Davis Domes—to inspire the design. Every element of the design references the core value of free speech within our community while taking inspiration from key components that make the UC Davis campus unique.

UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI

One of the most widespread theoretical techniques, thirding, follows the dialectical formula of thesis - anti-thesis - synthesis. It can be described as follows: a binary opposition is formulated, each with advantages and disadvantages, and then a third term is invented to combine the advantages and avoid the disadvantages of both. Our CONNECT installation has three components that expand on the notion of tectonics and structure in architecture and collectively create a catalogue of “misbehaved” tectonic possibilities.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

Our idea originates from the Japanese “dry landscape” gardens, also known as zen gardens. In Japan these environments require careful composition of rocks, gravel, water, and trees. By raking the gravel surfaces, gardeners are able to manipulate and transform the spaces they wish. The idea behind this is to imitate the movement of ripples in water, opening a doorway to a state of contemplation, meditation, and reflection. This is the ambiance we want to evoke in our oasis as a contrast to the rushed atmosphere of SOFA CHICAGO.
