A Note from the Editor Hello FIT Friend,

A

hh, the summer! School is out, vacation is in, and many of us collectively yearn for summer break. And though I am years removed from university living, having fun is remaining young. After reading this issue I am reminded that staying young is not a matter of age. It’s a matter of attitude and habit. In fact, healthy habits and active lifestyles keep us young and energetic. While the term “anti-aging” may send the wrong message, premature aging is preventable and avoidable. Eat fresh, stay active, avoid excessive sun, and relax. Stress is a major force in early signs of aging that can be countered by a smile. Laughter Yoga Pro, Teena Miller, shows us how laughter is the most effective exercise, and Samantha Cooprider gives us the “Scoop” on the health benefits of good music. And where there is music, there is dance and Zumba! Some of Solano’s favorite instructors are featured, including, cover girl and top favorite Zumba instructor, Ale Gomez! Whatever your particular SoFit habit, one thing is for certain: in order to stay healthy, we have to fit daily. Look forward to SoFit City events, a new wellness effort designed to help “fitify” our neighborhoods. It’s fun for all fitness levels, perfect for the curious, and its coming to a location near you! By the way, if you have a favorite training regimen, recipe, or story to share, pass it along at share@solanofitmag.com. Inspiration to Be Your Best,

Stop Suffering from Fatigue By Sherri Ludwig, MSRD

Let Yoga Re-Energize You

c

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) is an illness characterized by profound tiredness, regardless of bed rest. In addition, nearly every muscle and joint hurt, headaches occur, thinking is unclear, and the throat can be scratchy. It affects the physical status of the person and also can disturb their social, family, and work life. Yoga can help. Yoga is more than a series of postures. It’s an ancient system that combines spiritual and physical practices. The word yoga literally translates to “union” as yoga unites the body with the mind.

Unlike exercise programs, yoga does not take energy away from the system; instead, it puts energy back into the system. Yoga leaves you feeling refreshed and renewed. When Yoga is combined with breathing techniques, the CFS patient has a daily support system that makes a productive life possible. Physical and emotional tension and fatigue lodge in muscle tissue, making it knotted and the circulation sluggish. Yoga systematically stretches and relaxes the major muscle groups and brings fresh blood and oxygen to the tissues, which releases the tension and allows the muscles to relax. Yoga is performed

THE MOVEMENT

slowly, along with breathing patterns with each posture, which allows for maximum oxygen intake and for the release of toxins. Poor circulation also means the brain and other organs get less blood and nutrients. Yoga improves circulation by limbering the spine and providing elasticity to the blood vessels.

Unlike exercise programs, yoga does not take energy away from the system; instead, it puts energy back into the system. Breathing techniques improve concentration and awareness, and help to reduce stress reactions. Extreme reactions to stress, especially when they are triggered by a past event or a future fear, or by a situation that cannot be changed, cause energy demands to increase rapidly. Your breathing techniques put you in touch with an unlimited source of energy that lies within you. By constantly returning the mind to the present moment, you allow the body to deal with what’s happening now. Yoga gives us the right understanding of the purpose and meaning of life and offers techniques to ease one’s worries. The meditative side of yoga decreases the mental and physical stress. Lifestyle improvements, from diet to sleep habits, help complete the therapy. 

Stacy Baxley-White—Christina Mendoza is my Zumba instructor who has changed my life. For so long I have looked for a way to work out and could not find the right person or work out that I have been able to stay committed to. A few months ago I gave Zumba a try and have been committed since. Christina I believe is a big part of that, she pulled me in ...the first night I did it. I have tried other instructors and nobody has done what she does for me. When we are working out she will notice when you are new and makes sure she makes eye contact, you are getting the moves and best of all has a great big smile through every work out every time. Thank you Christina for doing what you do for us.

Roller Coasters and merry-go-rounds are supposed to be fun. But if you’ve ever tried to lose weight more than once, then you know how frustrating the merry-go-round can be. So much so, that when someone finally gets off the rollercoaster, and discovers their particular SoFit health habit, the one that works for them, its cause for celebration. Martha Eble is such a someone. Read her inspiring story below. Olympic style weightlifting involves competing with two lifts; the clean& jerk and the snatch. Learning the clean& jerk and the snatch took me out of my comfort zone. I used to be intimidated when I walked into a weight room, because I had never used a barbell before or did squats. But I began learning about all the technique and detail required to complete these lifts and it invigorated me! Learning so much was amazing. The stronger I got, the better I felt, and the more I wanted to learn. As a young girl growing up in the sixties, I wasn’t exposed to anything related to physical strength, and I certainly wouldn’t have chosen it for myself. But as I got stronger the strength began to sink into every part of me...my mind as well as my muscle. It’s totally integrated into who I am now. I believe this happened very organically and the result of changing my focus away from just “looking good”, to being strong. I forgot about my age, and tossed the notion that heavy weightlifting was just for men. It wasn’t an extreme makeover--it was a steady makeover with disciplined training, and slow but consistent results.

Get On Track

Training for Strength from the Inside Out By Martha Eble

I

joined a gym in 2007, tried to lose weight, lost about 20 pounds, only to put it on again. Finally I decided to work with personal trainers, one of which directed me to try a more classic Olympic weightlifting program. I thought to myself, “Yeah right, I am your mother’s age,” but I didn’t tell her that. Discouraged? That would be an understatement. At this point, I began to think that losing weight after 50 was too hard to even hope for. I attended the sessions, most times reluctantly and often through persistent cynicism. My trainer combined the one-onone training along with aerobic classes such as cycling, cardio kick box, and step. And then one day I looked at myself in the mirror during kick box class, wearing my baggy pink Nike shorts and matching pink shirt. Something clicked at that moment, and I decided I would redefine myself as an athlete. I laughed at myself, but reconsidered and thought, why not? My prior gym experience was the normal “working-out concept” which is basically devoid of any time sensitive goals. I never saw myself as athletic or fit, but in November of 2008, at 54 years old I took the advice and began learning and training in Olympic style weightlifting. When I shifted my outlook from being a general exerciser, dreading the gym and the whole “work-out” concept to being a purposed athlete in need of sport specific training, it required me to set specific goals. So I set my sights on competing in a weightlifting event before my 55th birthday. Training as an athlete and preparing for the event kept me focused on that one goal. All of sudden, I had to eat a certain way to maintain my weight class, and I had to train regularly even when I didn’t feel like it.

SolanoFit Magazine

Inspiration to Be Your Best TM

In training, as in work and life, there are so many variables. Some variables are more challenging than others, but I’ve learned to take the good with the bad. The challenges may not get easier, but I can get stronger, and eventually, I will overcome them. Training as an athlete helped me realize that I have the power to create success at work and in the weight room. I’ve read that public speaking is the greatest fear second only to death! I wonder where standing center stage in a tight-fitting singlet moving weight overhead would rank? I never thought that person would be me. But now I’m stepping out on the platform with the confidence not just to lift, but to live my life to the fullest! In competition, I get three attempts in each lift with the total score determining who gets the Gold Medal. I lift in my weight class of 53kg or 116lb. And lo and behold, at the American Masters’ Meet in 2009 I received Best Lifter in my age group (55-59 years) and the Gold! I even defended my record and broke it in 2010 again receiving the Gold and Best Lifter Award! I qualified and will be competing in my first Pan American International Meeting 2011. Socrates once said, “Let her who would move the world first move herself” or something like that. Since beginning my weightlifting journey that is a quote I have not forgotten. And to think that developing the strength to move a weighted barbell overhead could give me the power to toss other obstacles out of my way! My advice for you is to stop working-out! You may want to lose weight, look great or be healthy, but often that is a general cloud of nice wishes. Pick something and start to train! Training means a program for a specific event for a specific time. It’s kind of like…catching a train. Be there on time or get left at the station. Merry-go-rounds and roller coasters always bring you back to where you started. But training is going to take your body to a whole new place. Just remember that if life is a sport, then you are an athlete too, and you can find your SoFit habit. Start to train, stay on track and don’t ever give up! 

TWISTED SHOULDER STRETCH

(Targets Upper Back/Shoulders) – this stretch can be done right at your desk or on a stability ball.

Reduce injury and stress with flexibility training By Heidi Doerfert Photos by Kaylie Pullin With Joyce Mitchell The lights are dimmed. Candles flicker around the room as soft music fills the air. It may sound like the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening, but it’s actually the setting you’ll find when you enter the Joy2BWell Gentle Stretch class on Tuesday night.

Sit upright and tall. Engage your abdominals. Place feet hip distance. Take your hands straight out in front of you and rotate your arms so palms face away from each other. 1. Cross your arms so palms are pressed together. Draw your shoulders down. 2. Slowly lower your chin to your chest. Begin to round your upper back, reaching the arms away from you. Keep your head relaxed. Hold stretch 30 seconds.

“Flexibility training is one of the most neglected areas of a fitness program,” says Joy2BWell owner and instructor Joyce Mitchell. With over 17 years of experience in the fitness industry, including group fitness classes, personal training, Pilates, power walking, and flexibility training, Joyce understands the benefits of adding stretching to your routine. “Stretching improves mobility and posture, restores muscle length, reduces pain and injury, and is a great stress-reliever.” Yet, most of us either omit this part of our exercise routine entirely because we are tired at the end of our workout, or we rush through it and lose the full benefit. “Most people will only stretch each muscle group once for 8 to 12 seconds, which has little to no effect,” Joyce explains. “Be sure to hold each stretch 30 to 60 seconds, repeating 3-5 times.” She cautions to stretch AFTER, not before, a workout, as stretching cold muscles can lead to strain or injury. Hold each stretch to the point of mild tension or tightness, not to the point of pain. As with any exercise, if it hurts…stop. Joyce uses Static Stretching, which is composed of various techniques that gradually lengthen a muscle to an elongated position and are held for 30 seconds or more, in both her Gentle Stretch and Stretch n’ Tone classes. She also utilizes stability balls, bands, and gliders to facilitate stretches and make her classes more fun. She has seen firsthand how flexibility training has helped her clients, by reducing chronic pain and lack of mobility from injuries and stress.

“With flexibility training, you will move better, feel better, and perform at your best!”

Whether you stretch on your own or in a class, follow these tips to get the most out of your flexibility training:  Stretch all major muscle groups at least three times a week.  Hold each stretch 30 to 60 seconds and do 3-5 sets.  To reduce stress, stretch in a peaceful environment. Light a candle, turn on soft music…it can be a meditative experience as well.  Be gentle and don’t bounce. A good stretch is one that feels as though you have reached a gentle barrier of tension. As you slowly proceed, you should feel that barrier give way. An effective stretch feels like a release.  Respect your body’s limitations. Everyone’s flexibility is different.

 Breathe! Inhale, and as you exhale, perform the stretch.  Stabilize. Even stretching requires a stable anchor – in most cases, your “core.” Draw your naval back toward your spine, as if your belly button has a string attached to it and the string is pulling right through your body and anchoring to the wall behind you. This will protect your back and strengthen your abdominals.

Out of over 1800 votes, and even more posts and responses, Alejandrina Gomez was chosen the most favorite Zumba instructor, with over 25% of the vote! Also at the top were instructors Christina Mendoza, Angie Pewitt, and Timmi Lemen, each with over 100 votes. Congratulations to each instructor nominated, and a huge thank you to everyone who supported their favorite!

Zumba love!

Congratulations, Alejandrina Gomez! Our top Zumba instructor taught Pilates and aerobics in Mexico for eight years before coming to California and certifying in Zumba Basic1, Basic2, Zumbatomic, and Zumba toning. We asked Ale why she thought Zumba had captured the industry by storm: Solano Zumba Storm First of all, who can resist Latin dancing? Zumba is a high-energy workout that combines Latin and international rhythms and cardio that burns fat, sculpts your body, and it’s easy to follow....and it’s FUN! One of the most distinguishing things about Solano County is the diversity of its population. The amalgam of different cultures makes this area very receptive to the Zumba influence. Cumbia, salsa, meringue, samba, belly dance, hip-hop, reggeton, etc., had given the Zumba trademark its popularity, and those rhythms are part of our (Solano County) multicultural heritage. I love Zumba, it reminds me of my roots.

A Thank You I would like to thank everyone who voted for me. I am doing something I love and my students also love it. I feel my students are my overall favorites. They motivate me and inspire me to be the best instructor I can be. I’d like to thank all the instructors who participated. I really feel Zumba is taking off in Solano County, and every instructor is helping to make it happen. Read more >> www.solanofit.com

What started as an idea to bring our school's community together has turned out into more we could've ever imagined. Thanks to Ale's passion for Zumba, ...women who otherwise couldn't go to the gym are packing our cafeteria three days a week. Also, our school has been able to raise muchneeded funds for our students' programs. Thank you Ale, for making Zumba accessible to so many women in Solano County! Markham loves you"

BEGINS THIS AUGUST

“Get fit the ZUMBA way!” After having two kids, Christina struggled to lose the weight she had gained from the pregnancies. She tried several fitness classes, before stumbling upon a Zumba class. She liked it so much that she decided to teach it. Within a month, she was hired, and the rest is history. Becoming an instructor helped her to take care of herself, so she could have something to offer those around her. Christina is certified in Basic Zumba 1 and 2, Hot Hula, and Turbo Kick. To my favorite fans! My words can’t thank everyone enough. I am very flattered that so many love my workout. I appreciate all their dedication and loyalty. I promise to continue inspiring everyone, giving my best in every Zumba class party, and trying to give you every reason to come back again and again. In the future… I would be thrilled to expand my horizons in the future by opening my own studio. “Balance is Key”

Angie Pewitt

Every great story has a beginning. For Solano County, the Zumba story begins with Angie Pewitt. According to the Zumba instructor website, Angie was certified in 2007, long before most of us had even heard of it. She helped to usher in a wave that has unofficially become one of the most widespread fitness explosions to date.

PHOTOS BY MRS PHOTOGRAPHY

In the beginning… Originally, I was looking into teaching pilates right after getting group instructor certified, but I ended up taking a Zumba class in Yolo County. I liked it so much that I got certified and approached Gold’s Gym in Vacaville to teach Zumba Fitness there. They thought it would be fun to bring in something new! I did my first 30-minute demo class late November 2007. They put Zumba on the schedule, and before long, it went from 30 minutes to an hour class, then to two classes, then to three classes, and so on. People loved it!! To all of my friends and fans… I want to say thank you to all those that took the time to vote for me in the poll!! I truly appreciate all the support and love that has been shown to me through this and every day! I’ve made, and continue to make, so many wonderful friends through my fitness journey! I never would have thought that Zumba would explode as it did, and I feel blessed to be somewhere in the middle of it! God Bless and thank you all!! Stay tuned for Lord’s Gym youth Center in Vacaville. I will be teaching Zumba and Zumbatomic!! Read more >> www.solanofit.com

Battling Batten! Noah’s Embark to Raise Awareness Photos courtesy of Lauren Coughlan

F

ebruary 28, 2011. What started out as an effort for dear friends, has turned into both an international benefit, bringing hope and funding to an extremely rare disease called Batten disease, and a journey, carrying hundreds of families’ hope for a cure. Batten disease is a rare and debilitating fatal brain disorder, affecting less than 800 children in the United States. Early symptoms of the disorder usually appear around ages 4-10, with gradual onset of vision problems, and seizures. Over time, affected children suffer mental impairment, worsening seizures, and loss of sight, speech, and motor skills. Eventually, these children become blind, unable to speak, bedridden, and many times left in a vegetative state.

The Sharpe family and the Allio family, both of Vacaville, battle Batten disease each day. Noah Coughlin grew up with the Allio family and considered the disease tragic, but nevertheless common, until he realized that amongst all of the other benefits and causes for cures, Batten was overlooked. As debilitating a disease, no one knew anything about it. Worse still, with so few suffering from the disease, raising it to a level of national awareness would take an act of God. After doing some research, Noah learned Batten disease was potentially curable. With enough awareness and funding for scientists to further their research into this rare and fatal disease, a cure could be found. But research costs money, lots of money. Noah wanted to do something, something to help his dear friends. Having just completed the Napa Police Academy, fit and eager for public service, Noah had an idea. Noah knew he could run. He enlisted the help of family, friends, and The Batten Disease Support and Research Association (BDSRA) in Ohio, and he hit the road. The dangers of the open road are many. Not only did he risk injury and health, but also all of the hazards associated with audacious dreams: running out of money, getting discouraged, and losing hope. What if he failed? What if he miscalculated? What if he let people down?

❝We were all kind of in awe of the idea of [him] going on foot across the entire country. But We're all really proud...it's such a huge feat!❞

These thoughts never deterred him because success comes to those who plan and press on. Noah planned every meticulous detail and pressed on. Noah says, “The key to success is in the details....almost everything has been planned out to the final step. And for that plan A, there is a plan B.” What happened next is the story of legends. Canada, Ireland, the entire United States, and fans all over the world are tracking Noah’s progress

and supporting his tremendous effort. Songs have been written, videos have been made, and hope has been restored. Noah’s days on the road are never dull, but despite media attention and speaking to families in Canada, Ireland, and all over the United States, Noah has not gotten caught up in the celebrity. He remains simple, earnest, and thankful to all the supporters who have helped him this far. Noah admits that running every day since February hurts. But he is quick to point out that he is inspired by the children and families who are fighting this disease every day. “Every day hurts, but this run is dedication to the children who are facing the toughest part of their lives.” After running once lonely roads, now populated with supporters cheering him along the way, what has inspired Noah the most? “Speaking and meeting with parents who have lost their children (whether recently or in past years) have been the moments that have touched me deeply. They have watched their children deteriorate away over time. That has been the hardest part….” This July, Noah will have accomplished an amazing feat. After meeting families from coast to coast, being interviewed by several media outlets, and having raised money and the hope of a cure for families throughout the nation, Noah will complete his journey, having completed 2,400 miles. Prior to his Run for Research, Noah had run two marathons. By the completion of this journey, he will have run a distance equivalent to nearly 100. That day will be Saturday, July 9, 2011, by 1pm PST, at Atlantic Beach, past Jacksonville, Florida. Noah will complete his journey, having accomplished his goal of putting Batten disease on the map. But there’s more, thousands will hear of Noah’s story, thousands will be affected, and hopefully soon, a cure will be found. What’s next for Noah? “A lot more, this is just the tip of the iceberg,” he says. “Life presented me a window of opportunity. A challenge. A chance to do something big to help not only my friends, but also all the other children and families affected.” But Noah will tell you. This has been bigger than ever anticipated. With contributions and support of thousands, Noah and the BDSRA plan not only to battle Batten, but to defeat it. 

Bombshell Hair & Ink Get

Beautifully Made Up

in Benicia

By Colleen Hutchinson Photos by Ken Westermann

T

here are few moments in American history that resonate as well the World War II era of the 1940s. Iconic images, great music, and bombshell beauty were defined. Rosie the Riveter, Benny Goodman, Louis Prima, and Swing, Swing, Swing! It was wartime, but the records, the flicks, and the pinup artists of the time focused Americans on the happiness of life. Bomber air crews and fighter pilots painted pictures on their war crafts to remind them of what awaited them at home after the war. The term “nose art” referred to the paintings

28 28

that decorated the “nose” of their combat aircrafts. Cheri Graf, owner of Bombshell Hair & Ink, looked to nose art, for imagery that her customers could feel. “I wanted our customers to feel a certain way. I wanted to create an environment that people could love…one that would make them happy.” Walking into Bombshell Hair & Ink, I was instantly transported to a bygone era - the nostalgia and innocence of a simpler time: fedoras, firm handshakes, honest work, and bombshell

looks body beauties. The beautiful Bombshell logo is especially meaningful, as it’s the picture of one Cheri’s biggest fans, her dear aunt who bravely fought cancer until the end. Her aunt passed away the same weekend Cheri signed the lease to her shop. It’s a beautiful rendition, one unfortunately her aunt never got to see. No doubt her aunt would be proud, because Cheri has succeeded. Conveniently located in Benicia, Cheri has kept clients returning since February 2008. Her clients come from as far as Lafayette, San Francisco, Black Hawk, and Vacaville. A testament to her quality and her wisdom in choosing Benicia as her Solano county location, Cheri says that she needed to be close to the bridge and accessible to the diversity of clients she serves. “I wanted everyone to feel good, and to be treated well, no matter the size of their pocket book.” Cheri blends the edginess of the art form, the elegance of modern beauty, and the nostalgia of the era, into an interesting dynamic that works. Classy and coquettish, sweet but not bashful, proud and not pretentious – a sex appeal barely buttoned-up by the polite restraint of the era. Few hair shops could pull it off, but as the only tattoo shop in Benicia, Cheri pulls it off beautifully. “I love my clients, and I Iove the creativity of my talented team.” So fitting, Bombshell Hair & Ink was selected Solano’s Best of Hair Salon of 2010. Their tattoo portion is also wildly popular and her tattoo extraordinaire, Erick Lemereis is in high demand. “He’s extremely talented and always has a line of people eager to get on his schedule,” says Cheri.

❝I wanted our customers to feel a certain way. I wanted to create an environment that people could love…one that would make them happy.❞

Celebrating our 4th year anniversary with a 2nd location opening in San Francisco!

So what’s next? Bombshell Hair & Ink’s future is as bright as the smiles on her customer’s faces. “I will eventually need a larger space, and definitely an additional tattoo artist.”

One thing is certain: from her swing’n website (my new favorite), to the clean and shiny chrome of her Benicia shop, you can’t help but adore everything about Bombshell Hair & Ink. When you visit Bombshell H & I, you are bound to walk out feeling just as beautiful on the inside as you do on the outside. 

Women and Aging: Looking Inside to Discover the Fountain of Youth By Debra Milinsky, LCSW

“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly

S

have defeated age.” — Sophia Loren

Sophia Loren, internationally celebrated actress known for her iconic beauty; wife and widow of the love of her life, movie director Carlo Ponti; mother and grandmother, sister and daughter, will celebrate her 77th birthday on September 20th. Her acting career, spanning more than six decades, includes an impressive range of films from the classic, award winning drama, “Two Women” (1960), in which she portrays a mother surviving the perils of WW II with her pre-adolescent daughter in the war-torn Italian countryside, to later comedic roles such as a five-times-divorced restaurateur in “Grumpier Old Men” (1995) with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.

…Piccolo… Style for the Contemporary Woman

216 1st Street, Benicia, CA 94510 707-747-9321 www.piccolobenicia.com Find us on:

30

Watching Sophia Loren, graceful and glamorous on the silver screen, one would never suspect that she experienced significant early family disruption, poverty, and trauma in wartime Italy, including a shrapnel injury on her chin as she ran for safety during one of many sorties over her munitions manufacturing town. After the war, she entered a beauty contest at age 14, where her future husband was one of the judges. Although she did not win, this opportunity launched her acting career. And so a star was born! Fast forward those six decades, from promising starlet to seasoned actress, from World War II survivor to sage septuagenarian, whose remarkable career and words of wisdom exemplify her triumph over societal stereotypes about women and aging. How shall we make use of her thought-provoking reflections to empower girls and women to take good care of and feel satisfied with their bodies and themselves over the lifespan, despite living within a culture that privileges youth and devalues older people? We have all experienced the negative effects of constricting stereotypes that define what acceptable roles are, and what is desirable and beautiful for girls and women as they journey from youth to maturity. We have all been exposed throughout our lives to familiar stereotypes of the lithe and lovely, wellappointed super-model, and the wrinkled, disagreeable crone – defined as a woman over 40!! Societal expectations and stereotypes are communicated at the earliest age through children’s stories, film, and other media, for example, the roles modeled by Disney princess characters and their relationships with family and suitors, as depicted in these popular “kids’ movies”— with further reinforcement provided by the sale of ‘princess’ products. Ubiquitous media exposure during formative years of childhood and adolescence to sexualized film, television, and magazine images in which very attractive, youthful women are used as marketing props to sell everything from cars to tropical vacations, inevitably

The New w w w . s o l a n o f i t . c o m

looks body shapes adult attitudes and values about women’s roles and bodies. These subtle and not so subtle ads powerfully affect what and whom we perceive to be desired and desirable, and profoundly influence self-concept, body image, and self-confidence throughout a woman’s life. A longitudinal study* (1999, 2004, 2009) conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation, found that on average, 8-18-year-olds have an ever-increasing 7½ - 11 hours per day of media exposure— TV, videos, videogames, internet, cell and smart phone texting and music— often multi-tasking media with other activities such as eating and studying. Black and Hispanic children consume on average nearly 4½ more hours of media per day than White children. Even by age six, 80% of children are watching an average of two hours of TV or other “screen media” per day. We all know how sedentary these media activities can be.

Here are some practical tips on how to begin:  Take a moment to assess your present functioning and routines regarding breathing, sleeping, appetites, physical activity, and relationships. Are you doing well or struggling in any of these areas?  Make a list of internal and external strengths and resources that you can access to assist with any changes you wish to make.  Set down priorities and steps to start implementing better choices. Be proactive in taking care of any physical or emotional health concerns.  Seek and maintain healthy friendships with people of all ages having similar and different interests.  Make playfulness, physical, mental, and emotional health a priority instead of a postscript. Physical activity combined with fun activities makes your mind and body strong, enhances how you feel, and keeps you young at heart.

❝We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.❞ — George Bernard Shaw

Aging begins immediately after birth and lasts a lifetime. Our attitudes and values about growing old are influenced by our cultural experiences as well as by our genetic inheritance that can positively and negatively affect health outcomes between cradle and grave. Even when disability and disease arise, it is never too late to start making more healthy choices and lifestyle changes. One of the most important decisions girls and women can make at any age is to view aging as a natural process, and to respect and value her own body. Discovering the Fountain of Youth And so it appears that looking outside oneself for a road map to the fountain of youth leads to a cul-de-sac! Success actually depends on looking inside for the lantern you need to illuminate your path to this desired destination. Remaining physically and mentally active, emotionally healthy and engaged with family, friends, and co-workers, while developing satisfying work and creative interests, provides the necessary abundant reserve you need to discover the fountain and enjoy the elixir of life!  * Kaiser Family Foundation study link: www.kff.org/entmedia/entmedia012010nr.cfm

Laser Treatment Makes Skin Like New NorthBay Center for Women’s Health Welcomes New Medical Spa

her growing medical spa business into the Center for Women’s Health, enabling her to offer a wide gamut of services to patients from her Fairfield office. Among her tools are Botox, cosmetic fillers, laser photo treatments, and more. It is rare for insurance to cover any cosmetic procedures, so nearly all of Dr. Whitley’s treatments are offered on a “pay-for-the-day” basis.

Your chosen sport can also affect your skin. One study in France showed bicyclists’ skin aged 10 years over a two-year period. Skiers and snowboarders can get sunburn from light reflected off snow just as easily as any sun worshiper on the beach. Fortunately, there are new forms of skin rejuvenation now available in Solano County. One local physician, Teresa Whitley, M.D., of the NorthBay Center for Women’s Health, has spent the past five years helping her patients feel more attractive and confident by improving their skin. Dr. Whitley uses a camera and ultraviolet light to photograph hidden skin damage on a patient’s skin. Once she understands the damage, she can recommend a treatment. And while her clients are mostly women, a growing number of men are paying closer attention to their skin. Skin rejuvenation is an area of her practice that she finds very rewarding. “It’s great because these patients are not ill, or coming to me in distress,” she says. “They want to look and feel better. And most people are pleased with the treatments.”

An outdoor lifestyle is a healthy lifestyle, but exposure to the elements can wreak havoc on your skin. When sports take you outside, it’s nearly impossible to protect your face from the weather. From summer sun damage to the cold dryness of winter, your skin is usually the first area to reveal your age. Sunlight causes photo damage that can add 10 years to your appearance. Repeated exposure over many years will cause your skin to thicken and become leathery in appearance.

Botox is probably the most well-known treatment, but it’s different from the fillers patients can elect to receive. ”Botox relaxes the muscle, but fillers fill – they make the lines disappear,” Dr. Whitley explains. “You notice a difference immediately.” Most of the filler treatments last three to four months and most clients are repeat customers. The best compliment of all, she says, is from the patients who report that their coworkers thought they had just returned from vacation, because they look so rested. “People notice they look better, but they don’t necessarily know that anything has been done,” she says. “Now that’s a compliment.”  Dr. Whitley is a board-certified internal medicine physician and welcomes new patients into her practice. Protein Power How Much Do You Need?

A

sk someone about their eating habits and most will say they eat “pretty well.” But good nutrition shouldn’t be a guessing game. It involves eating a variety of foods that will supply your body with the nutrients you need to protect your health. These nutrients include carbohydrates, fat, water, vitamins, minerals and protein. What is Protein? Proteins are a part of every cell, tissue, and organ in our body. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which act to make new proteins from the foods we eat and balance the rate at which protein is broken

Where can you find protein? Good sources of protein include lean meat, fish, poultry, low-fat dairy products, nuts, seeds, dried beans, peas and lentils, and soy foods. The following foods average about 7-8 grams of protein per serving: 1 ounce of cheese, nuts, seeds, meat, poultry or fish, 1 large egg, ½ cup tofu, 2 tablespoons of peanut butter, ½ -1 cup of beans, rice, noodles, soymilk, and milk (depending on the source). Vegetables also have some protein, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus. In addition, protein can be found in some types of whole grains, such as brown rice and quinoa.

Let your body enjoy the powers of protein, so you can live a healthy life.

Nix the high protein diet/low carb diet! There really aren’t any foods that are pure protein. There are foods that are high in protein like milk, cheese, and meat, but these foods also contain some carbohydrates and fat. When people try the high-protein diets, they are also consuming highfat diets. This leads to high cholesterol levels, which can eventually lead to cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, our bodies do need some fat and carbohydrates. An average diet should contain 45 -65 % carbohydrates, 10 – 35% protein, and 20-35% fat with less than 7% being saturated fat. Fat has several functions in our bodies that run the gamut from giving us energy, to giving us healthy skin.

To calculate: 1. Convert pounds to kilograms by dividing by 2.2 (140 lbs ÷ 2.2 lbs/kg = 64 kg (rounded off) 2. Multiply kilograms by 0.8 to get your RDA in grams per day

So when planning your next trip to the grocery store, try to choose healthy fats such as natural almonds and walnuts, avocados, and olive oil. Be sure to load up on a wide variety of foods from all food groups, but don’t forget the lean and low-fat protein choices! Let your body enjoy the powers of protein, so you can live a healthy life. 

34

(64 kg x 0.8 grams/kg = 51 grams per day

The following snacks include a protein and carbohydrate and/or fat option: * Greek yogurt topped with fruit, nuts, and/or granola or add spices to make a dip for raw veggies * Hummus with whole-wheat pita or raw veggies such as broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, and jicama * Legumes such as garbanzo beans or black beans to include in a salsa made with tomatoes, corn, cilantro, and onions then eaten with soy chips, whole wheat crackers, or raw veggies or enjoy on a high fiber wrap with avocado

* Lean meats - roll up deli chicken breast and eat it as a snack

How much protein do you need? The Institute of Medicine suggests 10-35% of total calories come from protein for adults. This is a wide range because it depends on the individual and their health status. The Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) suggests 0.8 grams per kilogram of healthy body weight. So a female weighing 140 pounds should aim for 51 grams of protein per day.

Snack Time – Enjoy Protein at Every Meal and Snack!

* Low fat cheese - light string cheese (quick and easy on the go) or pair with whole- wheat crackers or fresh tomatoes

down in all body tissues. When adequate protein isn’t consumed, muscle protein acts as the reservoir to replace amino acids for the rest of the body. Research has shown that about 30 grams of protein is the maximum amount that can be used by the body at one time. That is why it is very important to spread your protein foods throughout the day and include protein with every meal and snack. This will optimize the potential for muscle growth and contribute to overall nutrient intake.

By Stephanie Musillo, MS, RD

* Almonds and walnuts are the healthiest nuts (aim for 1 ounce which for almonds is about 23 nuts) * Low-fat cottage cheese paired with fruit * Soy products – edamame makes a great snack * Natural peanut butter or almond butter paired with fruit or add to a whole-wheat thin bun, whole-wheat crackers, or rice cakes * Homemade trail mix made with nuts, dried fruit and cereals high in protein * Natural fruit and nut bars (Lara bar, Kind, and Soy Joy) * Tuna and crackers * Hardboiled egg whites – quick and easy * Low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt smoothie blended with fruit * Low-fat or fat-free milk and wholegrain cereal or graham crackers

HERBAL Medicine: Coming of Age The Rejuvenating Powers of Chinese Herbs

T

By Dr. (Shihan) Mary Bolz

Traditional Eastern culture has an approach to aging quite different than what we’re accustomed to in the West. In most of Asia, elders are respected and even revered. Take Japan for example, where countless television programs celebrate people 65 years and older, revere them for their knowledge and wisdom, and consider them to be in the prime of their life. Even though Japan has gotten very westernized, there is still quite a large difference in how Eastern culture treats their elderly, especially when it comes to medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine and its use of special herbs in particular, provide an optional method of health care that can strengthen us through the aging process so that we can all live full and productive lives. There is a multitude of diseases related to aging, including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, osteoporosis, diabetes, stroke, heart disease, arthritis, and hearing and vision loss, just to name a few. But illness primarily arises from neglecting to practice the preventive measures that could have helped. The good news is that we can learn about these measures and practice them now for maximum health benefits. Since 1985 the average number of pharmaceutical drugs prescribed per person has increased 33% and older patients are 6 times more likely to receive the new and heavily marketed drugs than other age groups. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), heart disease tops the leading causes

of death in the United States, at approximately 40%, followed by cancer and cerebral vascular accidents, commonly known as strokes.

On the other hand, life expectancy has increased. The number of people who smoke has decreased and more Americans are lifetime abstainers from alcohol. Along with proper daily living and eating, herbal supplementation during various stages of life can lay an essential foundation for supporting longevity and health. The tradition of Chinese herbal medicine has long been immersed in the pursuit of formulations to prevent, or at least slow, loss of vitality and essence. There are many traditional and modern Chinese medicine formulas developed by renowned Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners for diseases related to the aging process. It is important that a person is evaluated by a qualified Chinese Medicine herbalist before taking herbs. One size does not fit all and neither does one formulation of herbs or single herb fit all. The underlying pattern and condition of each person must be carefully evaluated. Going out and buying herbs on one’s own without knowing all the ins and outs of herbal pharmacology is not wise. Some herbs may even make the condition worse or just be a waste of money, although not harmful. Adaptogens Some herbs are classified as adaptogenic herbs. An adaptogen is defined as a substance that assists the organism to react to stresses, as well as increases Continued on page 46...

Laugh Yourself Young Discover the Fountain of Youth

T

o be healthy, wealthy, and wise is everyone’s dream. Throw in the magic potion of a Fountain of Youth elixir, and the human race will beat your door down to purchase it in a bottle. I have something that doesn’t cost you a penny. As long as you can laugh, then you can do Laughter Yoga! As Dr. Lee Berk at Loma Linda University, conducting research on the effects of unconditional laughter on the human body and mind declares, “My goodness, if you bottled laughter all up in a pill, you’d need FDA approval!” So, what is Laughter Yoga and who is Teena Miller (who teaches Laughter Yoga in Solano and Napa counties)? First, let me state that Laughter Yoga is NOT traditional Hatha Yoga, and you will NOT turn yourself into a pretzel! If you can laugh, you CAN do Laughter Yoga! Laughter Yoga originated in 1995 by a medical doctor, in family practice, who began doing research into why certain patients of his were thriving and living longer. As the doctor began his research, he was learning about the impacts and benefit of laughter on the human body. It was then, that Madan Kataria, M.D. created a set of breathing exercises incorporating artificial laughter, along with movement, to bring unconditional laughter to those in need of its benefits.

3

minutes of Laughter

Hence, one does NOT need to be Yoga equals 30 minutes a comedian or tell funny jokes of aerobic exercise. to begin Laughter Yoga. I will repeat, “If you can laugh, you can do Laughter Yoga!” Laughter Yoga started with just a small group of 5 people in Mumbai, India in 1995. It is now in over 65 countries around the world, and is practiced in over 10,000 groups/clubs, where people gather to do these laughing exercises together and gain the healthy benefits it provides for its participants, as long as they LAUGH! When we are children, we laugh for no reason at all and up to 400 times a day. Unfortunately, as we age, we laugh less and less. In fact, if we are lucky, we will laugh up to 20 times a day as adults. It is important to reconnect to our childlike innocence and remember what it was like to just laugh out loud to reduce stress in our lives! And besides, we only utilize 60% of our lungs as we age. Practicing Laughter Yoga opens up our breathing capacity, which also increases our lung capacity. As our lungs capacity increases, our intake of oxygen increases. This boosts our immune systems and releases endorphins into our bodies.

Where members are family

Photos courtesy of Teena Miller Three minutes of Laughter Yoga equals 30 minutes of aerobic exercise. (I know you are saying to yourself, that can’t be!) But it’s true, our hearts are muscles, and when we laugh, they contract the heart muscles, pumping more oxygen into our bodies! It was Dr. Berk who discovered that research fact! Teena knows what it is to Laugh Out Loud as opposed to shedding tears. Having overcome late Stage III breast cancer, followed by Melanoma Stage II skin cancer, Teena looks for healthy ways to keep her on the planet, and at the same time, be in service to her community. It was after the melanoma that she learned about Laughter Yoga. For Teena, it is all about getting more oxygen into her body, and laughing provides that tool. Dr. Otto Warburg, who twice won the Nobel Prize for Medicine, advocated the advantages of laughter quite a few years ago. He states, “Deep breathing techniques increase oxygen to the cells and are the most important factors in living a disease-free and energetic life. When cells get enough oxygen, cancer will not and cannot occur.” Regardless of the fact that we could all laugh, there are situations when we do not feel like laughing, but even pretend laughter has worthwhile properties. It has been medically proven that the body cannot differentiate between actual laughter and bogus laughter. Laughter Yoga may not be the Fountain of Youth, but for Teena it is a working tool in her LIVINGLIFE Tool Box that she incorporates to boost her immune system and increase oxygen into her body. Simply put, with every laugh Teena believes she is improving her life and living longer on the planet! As Dr. Lee Berk stated earlier, “If you bottled laughter all up in a pill, you’d need FDA approval!”  Teena Miller is a Certified Laughter Yoga Teacher, having personally studied with Dr. Madan Kataria. Teena currently teaches Laughter Yoga exercises to over 200 people, on a weekly basis. She is also an elementary school teacher in the Vacaville Unified School District, an author and artist, public speaker, and mother of 2 amazing daughters. How to Harness the Power of Music By Samantha Cooprider

We are such a visual society; we sometimes forget the power of sound. Yet the human ear has an advantage over the eye, which does not see anything until out of the womb. Once born, we can control what we see much more than we can control what we hear. If we don’t want to look at something, we can simply close your eyes or look away. Sound, however, literally begins to penetrate the body from inside the womb. This explains why music interacts with our bodies. On some level we all know this. Music is so powerful that we say things like, “That song moved me,” or “That song was touching.” Interestingly, uplifting music makes people want to exercise harder. Some research even shows that music affects our level of perceived exertion during exercise. In other words, while listening to uplifting music, we train harder without realizing it. Tap into this power. Use music as a way to workout harder, longer, or simply more often. Music can turn the most boring exercise routine into a fun experience that provides better results.

3 Powerful Tips 1. Choose Meaning Music can make you cry, cheer, or compete, so pick the songs that resonate with you. The only rule is the songs have to inspire you to move. Our advice: xnay the break up music. Crying on the treadmill might bring you unnecessary attention, unless it gets you fired up to run faster. If that’s the case, “Cry Me a River.” 2. Need Motivation? Make Specific Playlists There are so many styles of music out there. You can choose songs for every mood or activity. For Example: Make an I-Am-Tired-But-I-Know-I-Got-ToWork-Out playlist. Okay, maybe not that. 3. Share Playlists with Friends If your favorite songs don’t carry the punch you might need because you listen to them all the time, ask a friend for a song that inspires her, so that you can create a new association to a song that isn’t already over-used. Sharing is caring. 

How’s Your Body Image?

A Key to Mental and Physical Health

By Sarah Dowling

I

mages flicker in and out of the public eye and what is considered the “perfect” body is often coupled with the idea of achieving optimum health. People who view these images strive to lose weight, gain muscle, and become the unrealistic images they see in the media. According to an article in Child Development, by Gianine D. Rosenblum and Michael Lewis, “Body image has been established as an important aspect of self-worth and mental health across the life-span.” A positive body image in adolescence and throughout life is an important characteristic to have. Feeling good about oneself increases self-esteem, confidence, and aids one to better function in society. But, when one develops a negative body image and develops feelings of worthlessness, things can go wrong. To compensate for negative body image, eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia can develop among those with poor self-esteem. According to the South Carolina Department of Mental Health, “It is estimated that 8 million Americans have an eating disorder – seven million women and one million men.” Solano Community College psychology professor LaNae Jaimez defines anorexia as being “15% below expected body weight, having a distorted body image, and an extreme fear of being fat.” Individuals who suffer with anorexia nervosa may attempt to prevent weight gain by starving himself or herself, or exercising excessively.

Bulimia is another eating disorder characterized by binge eating and some form of purging, “which is either the vomiting, excessive exercise, fasting, could be laxatives or diuretics,” Jaimez said. Like anorexia nervosa, bulimia has little to do with food, but has to do with perceived self-worth. Media images often set the standard for how people think they are supposed to look; images on the television and computer screens, on billboards, benches, buses, t-shirts, and virtually everywhere one looks. Advertising agencies often choose models based on criteria that are difficult to attain. Solano Community College human development professor Joan Means says that women receive marketing messages to grow up faster at a young age, and that “children are glued to the television to see more of it, because it’s louder, brighter.” In 1970, consumers were exposed to approximately 2000 marketing messages a day. Today, that number exceeds 5,000. But, it’s not just television. What happens in the home is just as, if not more, important. The Journal of Marriage and Family suggests that family and culture both play their part in the development of body image among adolescents, and contends that individuals develop a normal or distorted body image in the context of family life. Culturally, however, the article cites “higher rates of eating disorders in western culture, among whites, and particularly among women.”

Professor Jaimez adds, “If you look at other countries where there aren’t such role models or such media, eating disorders are virtually non-existent. One Local Family Making a Difference By Wendy Vanhatten

a

At the end of the day we all really want the same thing: to be healthy enough for one more day to live. Most of us take those days for granted, not even pausing to think whether we will have that day or not.

When the average consumer is aware of and understands that the bottle of wine they just purchased is more than just a bottle of wine, that’s when they “get it,” says Don.

Kids with Cystic Fibrosis think about it. Cystic Fibrosis is only one of many life-threatening diseases people live with each day. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a non-profit donor supported organization, is looking for a cure. One local family understands this disease only too well, as their niece, Kyleigh Locke, has been affected with it since early in her life. They wanted to do something, really do something to help.

Our goal is to help you reach your goals.

Wine 4 Cures became that “aha” moment for Don Locke. With a background in the wine industry, Don enlisted the help of his wife Jessica, and creative mind Ryan Crain, to develop and brand a wine specifically for Cystic Fibrosis. Utilizing CF’s existing logo, 65 Roses, Wine 4 Cures began with California Rosè specifically for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Dedicated to making a difference, Don, Jessica and Ryan created a business that assists non-profit agencies in this unusual manner. The wine industry is already involved in charity work, with many wineries donating as much as all of their profit to specific charitable foundations, but more exposure, exposure for the right reason, is still needed.

Expanding to Make A Wish Foundation with 4 Wishes Merlot, The Michael J. This in turn will raise funds for charities across the world. Farmers, who have good grapes but no home for their fruit, welcome the opportunity to sell at a fair

price, with longterm commitments securing a steady revenue stream. Wines 4Cures will lock up great grapes, from the world’s most famous growing regions, in order to make tasty, affordable wines. Everyone benefits: the consumers, retailers, wholesalers, and most of all, the charities.

Wines 4 Cures provides the whole package: wine that is good for the soul, includes some health benefits, offers balance in life, and now promotes good causes. Jessica says everyone should have to walk through a children’s hospital where kids are in the midst of life-altering diseases. It will change how you view charities and the work they accomplish. Jessica tells me, “When we open wine at the end of the day, we are reminded of our niece’s illness and everything gets put into perspective”. After all, kids just want one more day. Today, it’s even more critical that we make important changes to challenge passive living. Toxins in our environment have increased. From poor water quality to mercury-laced silver fillings, increased stress, and genetically modified foods decreasing our body’s immune defenses, our harmful aging practices have caught up with us and become the norm. The good news is that this crisis has lead to confrontation. All over Solano County and abroad, readers and residents are defying the old norms to make new ones. Folks are taking responsibility to create healthier futures, literally creating healthy habits that will bolster their body inside and out for the long haul. We’re familiar with methods like physical exercise, but nutritional analysis gives you immediate feedback to develop the habits particular for healthy aging, so that life in the later years can be internally stronger, not just longer.

My Child is Obese, Now What?

planet

A Kid-Sense Solution By Randolph C. Thomas, M.D.

When I see a child who’s overweight, I like to discuss the issue with the parents and child, focusing on the fact that my concern revolves around health, not appearance. Some parents are open to taking proactive steps to control their child’s weight. Others are in denial, which must be overcome before they’re able to assist their child in achieving better health.

A

bout 10 percent of all children were considered to be overweight in the 1960s. Today, that figure is more like 30 percent… and we’re already seeing the health consequences of a heavier child population. Case in point, there is a huge increase in the incidence of type 2 diabetes among adolescents. Heavy children often end up being heavy adults, and it’s no secret that carrying extra weight can have significant implications for long-term health. Nothing about children’s physical makeup has changed over the past 40 years, but a lot has changed about being a kid. Physical activity often takes a backseat to sedentary pursuits like playing video games, surfing the Internet, and watching TV, and calorie-laden “convenience” foods are regularly eaten instead of healthier alternatives. The combination of less exercise and poorer diets equals heavier kids. Medical professionals have been aware of this issue for some time. In 2006, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a policy statement entitled, “Active Healthy Living: Prevention of Childhood Obesity Through Increased Physical Activity.” The document calls on pediatric healthcare providers and public health officials to encourage, monitor, and advocate for increased physical activity for children, suggesting the issue be attacked by expanding school PE, providing suitable role models for physical activity, and making activitypromoting environmental changes.

Unfortunately, many schools are eliminating PE due to budget constraints. Some attempts have been made to promote physical activity, including the NFL’s PLAY 60 program, but it’s clear more needs to be done.

44

Weight control usually needs to be attacked on multiple fronts, with diet and activity being the easiest to quantify. I may suggest dietary counseling, especially when kids tell me the food they get at home isn’t very healthy. The whole family typically needs to eat in a healthier manner for children to successfully lose weight. It’s vital for children to participate in activities that burn calories. Most kids don’t get out and just play anymore, so it’s incumbent on parents to get them involved in vigorous physical activities that get them moving for at least 30 to 60 minutes every day. This can include organized sports, biking, swimming, dancing, jumping rope, and other fun activities. For kids older than 10, I often suggest strength training, which can increase muscle mass and decrease fat. It can also help build self-esteem, as overweight kids are often stronger than their smaller peers. Some activities appropriate for normal-sized kids, like running, can be depressing or even embarrassing for overweight children. Studies have shown that younger children are often more receptive to addressing weight issues than adolescents and adults, so it’s never too early to begin a focus on physical activity and healthy eating. The AAP recommends no more than one to two hours of daily entertainment or media time for children older than two and none for children younger than that. It’s better for them to be moving than to be watching others move around.  Dr. Thomas is a boardcertified pediatrician who’s affiliated with Sutter Medical Group and Sutter Medical Foundation. He sees patients in Vacaville. For more information please visit suttermedicalfoundation.org.

Is HCG For You?

New Protocol Boasts Miracle Weight Loss

By Cheryl A. Crumpler, Ph.D Clinical Health Education, Infinity Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation Center The HCG diet and metabolic protocol is sweeping the nation because it works! Featured recently on the Dr. Oz show, as well as other news programs, this rapid form of weight loss and cure for metabolic syndromes is becoming incredibly popular. So, what is the HCG diet and why does it work?

resolved. Following the HCG days, the individual is required to spend 21 days in “maintenance,” neither gaining nor losing weight. This is done by monitoring caloric intake and by abstaining from any sugar or starch. It is during this time that the hypothalamus of the brain is “reset” and the new weight is established as “normal.” It is helpful during this time to work with an educator to find the right foods and caloric intake for your body. Once this ideal is found, maintenance is quite easy.

Following these 21 days of maintenance, the body will believe that this new “maintained” weight is the correct weight, and the cravings and urges to eat more than is necessary will be of people that a thing of the past. Individuals can successfully complete complete subsequent rounds after a this protocol will keep break in time that varies and will be the weight off permanently! determined by your physician.

70%

First, the HCG diet is not a new or typical “diet” at all. It is a medical protocol that became quite popular in Europe in the middle of the 20th century, and was used frequently by celebrities and diplomats. The original protocol was established and published by Dr. Simeons in his landmark 1954 paper called “Pounds and Inches.” In his paper, Dr. Simeons explained his research into the nature of obesity and his technique for its cure. The HCG protocol was meant to be a permanent cure for obesity and metabolic syndromes, as well as a program for rapid weight loss. The HCG protocol consists of taking the hormone HCG, a natural hormone produced in a woman’s body during pregnancy. True HCG can only be obtained with a physician’s prescription. The “versions” of HCG being sold over the Internet, in drugstores, or by non-licensed physicians are not high enough in HCG to establish the levels required by Dr. Simeons’ protocol. Over the counter forms contain only minute traces of the hormone, and are not enough to establish a dosage high enough in the body to cure the causes of obesity. While you may well lose weight with these drugstore versions, as anyone would on a low calorie diet, you may or may not find the weight returning once you finish the protocol The prescription HCG is taken either via injections once a day or sublingually (under the tongue) twice a day. After two loading days, where a high fat diet is consumed, the individual changes to a carefully prescribed 500 calorie a day diet that consists of protein, vegetables, some fruit, and small amounts of starch. Because the HCG has built up in the system, and the fat stores are amply supplied during the loading days, the body easily shifts into a fat burning mode. So, while only 500 calories are consumed through the mouth, the body burns the additional calories necessary for functioning from the abnormal fat stores. Very few feelings of hunger are experienced, as the body feels satisfied from gorging on its own fat. These fat stores, for most of us, are found in the belly and around the hips and thighs. This is the reason that Dr. Simeons called his manuscript “Pounds and Inches.” While pounds are most definitely lost, individuals will see a substantial drop in inches from these areas as well. The HCG is taken for a minimum of 23 days and a maximum of 40 days. Most people will find that they lose 8 – 10 % of their body weight. Women tend to lose (on average) half a pound each day, and men closer to one pound each day. Individuals needing to lose 15 pounds or less must still stay on the protocol for at least 23 days, even if the goal weight is reached before this time. This is because if the protocol is cut short, the hypothalamus will not receive the rest it needs and the cause of the obesity will not be

When done correctly, the HCG diet and metabolic protocol is a wonderful way to lose weight and reset your metabolism. It should not be confused as just another diet. It is a medical protocol that is designed to cure obesity. May “diets” will help you lose weight, but if you are interested in changing your metabolism, this may be an excellent choice for you. According to Dr. Simeons’ research, about 70% of people that successfully complete this protocol will keep the weight off permanently!  To begin your journey to Anti-Aging and Rejuvenation, contact Infinity Wellness at 707.652.2928.

It also offers protection from radiation and environmental toxins. Eleuthero root is an important ingredient in one famous antiaging tonic along with Cordyceps, (dong chong xia cao in Chinese, tou chuu ka sou, in Japanese). Cordyceps also can eliminate cough and phlegm because it affects the Lung channel as well as the Kidney channel. Ginseng was revered by ancient herbalists as “strengthening the five viscera and extending one’s life.” In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) we say that it supplements Qi, strengthens the five viscera, benefits the Heart and calms the Spirit. It is especially useful as a tonic for weakness and debility after an illness or long period of stress. Chinese ginseng is more hot while American ginseng (xi yang sheng) is a more cooling type of ginseng. The Immortal Herb Ganoderma, (ling zhi, in Chinese) or reishi (Japanese word), is known in ancient China as the “immortality herb,” and was ranked by scholars as

more valuable than ginseng. Recent studies have stressed its immunemodulatory activity in cancer research for radiation treatment and anti-tumor activity while enhancing the body’s own immune system. The terpenes in reishi help counter bacteria and viruses; they’ve also been found to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities that can lower blood pressure and blood lipids and generally slow down the aging process. It is used extensively in Japan for the treatment of cancer. Reishi is also reputed to be a natural mood elevator. It is important, once again, to be evaluated by a qualified TCM practitioner before using these herbs. The herbs can have the opposite effect if taken in certain body types and conditions. Given that, herbal medicine can be a very wonderful preventative and treatment that is all natural without any side effects if taken properly for the right condition. In certain cases where a person has intolerance to the herbs or is taking too many medications that may react with the herbs, the way to go is acupuncture. Acupuncture is completely neutral and will not react with any type of treatment, whether Eastern or Western. Usually, most TCM practitioners recommend both, but there are certain cases where only one of these modalities is chosen. With the incredible gains that can be won for your health, you may want to explore your options. 

Tips for Your Next FIT trip

Keep fit, even on the road

Stay Safe: Be Prepared for a Healthy Trip

Whether you are taking a business trip, visiting family, or enjoying a weekend getaway, travel doesn’t have to get in the way of your exercise routine. You can make exercise your priority wherever you are with these great ideas.

Summertime means vacation time for many of us. Whether your travel plans are a weekend getaway or a month-long trip, make the most of your vacation by planning ahead. The following travel tips are courtesy of the Kaiser Permanente Travel Medicine Clinic.

Step to it - Traveling gives you lots of opportunities to explore new places by foot. Wearing a pedometer will help remind you to skip the cab, take the long way home, or scale that staircase for a better view. Pull out the map and explore the city, or ask your hotel’s staff to recommend a good walking route. If you’re at a business conference, take advantage of breaks to get out of the chairs and walk the halls—you can rack up 300 to 500 steps in just five minutes! Be a kid again - Remember the jump rope? It’s cheap, portable, doesn’t require much space, and you can burn 125 calories in just 15 minutes of jumping. You can use both feet or alternate between your left and right foot. Try jumping rope while listening to music or watching TV. Weight training in your suitcase - Resistance bands are light and easy to pack, making them the perfect equipment to keep you toned on the road. Squats, rows, chest presses, biceps curls, triceps extensions, and lunges can all be done with bands instead of weights. Stretching and conditioning - These require no equipment at all—you just need a little floor space. Combine several exercises, such as stretches, leg lifts, and abdominal crunches, for a great short workout. Getting active with the TV - Exercise programs on TV can bring simple, easy-to-follow exercise routines right to your hotel room. Try calisthenics to energize you before you head out, or yoga to invigorate your muscles after a long day. Team up - If you’re visiting friends or family, look for active pastimes to enjoy together like a trip to the park or the pool. If you are with others on a business trip, invite them to join you at the hotel gym or a nearby yoga studio. Aerobic amenities - If your hotel has a gym, take advantage of it! It’s a nice opportunity to try equipment you don’t normally get a chance to use if you’re not a gym member at home, for instance, a treadmill, elliptical trainer, or stair stepper. And if it’s been a while since your last swim, a vacation is a great place to remind yourself how much fun it is to work out in the pool.

SoFit Success

Congratulations,

Sheila Cook!

After hard work, tireless effort, and with great support, Sheila Cook lost over 30 pounds to win the Vacaville Zumba’s Biggest Loser Challenge! She is looking absolutely fabulous and is continuing to lose weight.

>Your Challenge Once I made the decision to get started, I had to get up off my lard butt and do it. That was definitely harder than the decision, but my friend Sandra who had started Zumba helped me with that part. Originally, I had started working out at home, and had plans for the gym, but could not work up the motivation to stick to it. But once I tried Zumba, I HAD A BLAST!!! And I have been having a blast ever since!

>Keeping Motivated At first it was my friend, Sandra, who had just lost over 40 pounds and was such an inspiration to me. My inspiration soon became the new friends I met in my Zumba classes (Vacaville Zumba and Zumba with Miranda). Then, we had a Biggest Loser Challenge, in which the total group lost over 95.1 pounds in eight weeks! The success was selfmotivating, and I could see my results in the mirror. Zumba is motivating too! It’s not just a fun way to get up, move, and dance off those pounds, it’s really so much more. I am a workaholic, busy wife, and mother. I was losing focus

on important things that were just for me. How many of us do this? I have found that focus again. Zumba has helped to build a wonderful friendship with my friend Sandra, and I have made even more friends with the other ladies. For me, that is the real treasure.

>What Have You Learned About Yourself? Through this challenge, I’ve learned that I can inspire others they way Sandra and others inspired me. I’ve also learned that choosing to lose weight or “get healthy,” is all about looking at oneself and deciding to make a change. But I think, it’s really about hitting your own personal bottom. That bottom is different for everyone. For me, it was hitting a weight I swore I would never hit again in my life.

>What Are People Saying? People say, “Wow! You look amazing!” But more importantly, I feel younger and so much better, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Thank you, Sandra, for being my inspiration, so I can now pass it on to others. Thank you, Angela, Julia and all the Bazumbas, you are all so wonderful

Zumba Love Elsa Dacayanan Bagnol(and husband Van)— Lani was our first Zumba instructor. Elsa tried it last October and afterward went home and told her husband about it, and the two of us spent that evening watching Zumba videos on YouTube. Van became Elsa's guest at the next Zumba class and we've been taking Zumba ever since, and now we take all kinds of exercise classes together. Lani not only got our bodies fitter, she got our marriage in shape too! Bryan Parkman —Miranda jumps to mind when I spent some time getting to know her as a friend she told me she lost an incredible amount of weight.....when she told me I immediately gave her a high five...whoot whoot!! Some of the success stories of Zumba are built like Mirandas experience.....now I know why she has a lot of energy....
