PROGRAM NOTES

Overture to Rienzi, the Last Tribune Composer: Richard Wagner (1818-1883) Nationality: German; Era: Romantic Wagner is best known for his epic operas and his four part 18-hour Ring Cycle. It was Wagner's third opera, Rienzi, that established him as a respected composer. He was inspired by Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s novel Rienzi, the last of the Roman Tribunes. Rienzi portrays a man who vows to return Rome to its greatness but becomes caught in the trappings of power. The overture opens with a trumpet call to arms. Rienzi has been excommunicated for leading a force of Roman citizens against the treacherous Roman nobles, prompting everyone to abandon their support of him. On the brink of disaster, Rienzi prays for strength. The rest of the overture contains various themes from the opera and represents the military force Rienzi has gathered to invade Rome.

Selections from Carmen Suite Composer: Georges Bizet (1838-1875) Nationality: French; Era: Romantic Bizet was a French composer and pianist. He entered the Paris Conservatory at age 10 and could have earned a living as a concert pianist. Liszt named Bizet one of the finest pianists in Europe. Apart from a few years in Rome, Bizet lived in or near Paris his whole life. Carmen, the most performed opera in the world, is written in French, but set in Spain. When Carmen is arrested at the beginning of the opera she seduces the guard Don José. José is then imprisoned for letting her escape. After his release, he finds Carmen and she convinces him to join her group of smugglers. But Carmen does not care for José; she is in love with the bullfighter Escamillo. When Escamillo enters the bullfighting ring, a desperate José meets Carmen outside the arena. He demands that she leave Escamillo and she refuses, throwing away the ring José had given her. José stabs Carmen in the heart with a dagger. She dies at the same time as Escamillo's bullfighting victory.

2014-15 the fifteenth season

PROGRAM NOTES Cello Concerto No. 4 Composer: Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805) Nationality: Italian; Era: Classical Boccherini was a master cellist who, like Mozart, wrote for himself. Boccherini was born into a musical family. At age 13, he was sent to Rome to study the cello with the musical director at Saint Peter’s Basilica. In 1757 Boccherini and his father joined the Imperial Theatre orchestra in Vienna. Among his patrons were Infante Luis Antonio of Spain (brother of Spain's King Charles III), Lucien Bonaparte (brother of Napoleon), and King Friedrich Wilhelm II of Prussia. Cello Concerto No. 4 begins with a strong first movement. It continues with a slow movement that sounds rather Handelian, and ends with a galloping finale.

Maura Phelps, on performing Cello Concerto No. 4: "Playing in an orchestra requires a whole different focus than in a solo. In an orchestra you must blend, listen, and sacrifice your own spotlight to benefit the rest of the group. But playing a solo puts you in the hot seat. Not only is projection [of sound] a whole new challenge but maintaining the phrasing of the piece despite what is going on behind you is difficult. When playing a solo you are exposed to a whole different type of interaction with the orchestra." Maura began playing cello at age 7. She joined SOGO in 3rd grade so she could experience playing with other young musicians. She is a senior at Timberline HS and plans to study music in college.

Bridget Long, on performing Oboe Concerto in D minor

Oboe Concerto in D minor Composer: Alessandro Marcello (1673-1747) Nationality: Italian; Era: Baroque

"I like how dramatic my concerto can be, and I also enjoy the technicality. Performing a solo is very different from playing with an orchestra; in an orchestral setting one's job is to blend and cooperate musically with the rest of the section. With a solo piece it is for the most part up to the soloist to dictate how the piece is played."

7 student orchestras of greater olympia

Bridget joined SOGO in 7th grade and is now finishing her senior year at Capital HS. She will be auditioning for conservatories across the country this spring.

Alessandro Marcello was an Italian nobleman who was interested in many fields, including poetry, philosophy, and mathematics. He studied law and served in the Venetian judiciary and as a diplomat for the Republic. He used the pseudonym ‘Eterio Stinfalico’ for his music, which led it to be misattributed to Vivaldi for many years. Marcello was influenced by both Vivaldi and Tommaso Albinoni, who wrote extensively for oboe and orchestra. Marcello's Oboe Concerto in D minor is known for "the mournful beauty of the first movement, the noble pathos of the second, and the clean strength of the finale [which] could have been matched by Bach himself but for the fact that the style is so thoroughly Italian." (Arthur Hutchings, The Baroque Concerto)
