Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso

About the Music

Andrew Huang, Violin

SOGO violinist Andrew Huang describes Saint-Saëns’ Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso as “dramatic and virtuosic.” Maestro Welsh agrees, “The Saint-Saëns Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is a showcase for violin soloists. Andrew is playing it with excellent style and energy.”

by Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) Camille Saint-Saëns began composing music at the precocious age of three and at 11 debuted as a concert pianist, offering as an encore to play any Beethoven sonata the audience could name. Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate was 19 when Saint-Saëns wrote the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for him in 1863, and the technical challenges of the work attest to the violinist’s prowess. ~Barbara Heninger

Andrew, a senior at Olympia High School, enjoys the main theme of the piece, but it has its challenges. “The word ‘capricious’ comes from ‘capriccioso,’” he says. “There’s not a lot of room for rhythmic interpretation. I had to do a lot of metronome work.” Andrew joined SOGO after attending a SOGO concert. “Friends in orchestra at school who were in SOGO invited me to come to a concert. The concert was really good, and I thought it would be cool if I could play those pieces, too – to see if I could be part of that.” Andrew says of his time at SOGO, “I’ve liked it a whole lot because it’s different from school. People don’t have to be there. The teaching artists, the conductors, and the students – they want to be a part of making music. It’s a unique environment.”

About the Music

Concertino for Horn in E minor

Henry Nordhorn, French horn

by Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826)

Henry Nordhorn, a senior at Olympia High School, says Weber’s Concertino for Horn in E minor is “energetic without being fast or rushed.”

Carl Maria von Weber was an expert pianist at age four and wrote his first opera at age 13. From the time he was 18, he was continuously employed as a conductor at one of at one of the German princely courts, except for a short time at a private opera house in Prague.

“I get to do stuff I’ve never done in any other piece,” says Henry, “like reaching some of the high notes and learning how to do multiphonics.” Multiphonics requires the hornist to play one note while humming a second note. When done correctly, a third and fourth note resonate to create a chord.

Weber’s Concertino for Horn was composed in 1815 for the natural horn, just a few years before two German inventors patented a valved horn. Weber is known for his contributions to Romantic opera and German nationalistic opera.

“It was originally written for a natural horn,” continues Henry, “which is crazy because natural horns have no valves. With the natural horn, you can put in a tuning slide called a crook that changes the horn to play in the key you need, but you have to change all of the notes with your face. Playing this Concertino with a modern horn means that your face still does a lot of work, but your fingers have a lot of really tricky patterns.” “I like that lots of times the horn just sits in the background until the glory moment when its time for the horn to shine. I think the job of the French horn is to glorify the orchestra!”

Fostering the joyful pursuit of intellectual, social and emotional expansion through a challenging curriculum that nourishes highly capable middle school students to develop identity, self-empowerment and community.

About the Music

Solemn Overture

Karelia Suite

Solemn Overture was commissioned by the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra to commemorate its 30th anniversary. Solemn Overture has been well received by audiences and critics alike, described by critics as a “modern mosaic which sets a tone of understated elegance,” and “a genuine beauty for all its deceptions of simplicity.”

Jean Sibelius was born in a small Finnish village at a time when Finland was under control of the Russian Empire. Sibelius’s father died when he was only a year old, but his uncle stepped in to fill the role of father. It was this uncle who gave him a violin when he was ten and encouraged him in his musical pursuits.

by Scott Pender (1959-present)

Scott Pender holds degrees in philosophy from Georgetown University and music composition from Peabody Conservatory. He was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study in the United Kingdom with the English composer Gavin Bryars. In addition to a MacDowell Colony residency, he has received honors from the Virginia Arts Festival John Duffy Composers Institute, the D.C. Commission on the Arts & Humanities, the American Music Center, ASCAP, BMI, Meet the Composer, the Southeastern Composers’ League, and others. Pender has written for a wide variety of media, including music for theater and dance. For more information about Scott Pender and his work, visit www.scottpender.net.

by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)

In 1893, Sibelius was commissioned by the Vipuri Student’s Union to compose music for a series of historic scenes about the Finnish province of Karelia. The pageant was intended to bolster Finnish patriotism. Karelia Suite depicts Karelians paying tribute to a Lithuanian duke, a melancholy deposed king listening to a minstrel, and a call to battle against Russia. Sibelius is so popular in Finland that the Finnish mark featured his image until the euro was adopted by Finland in 2002.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 Caddie Derby, Violin in D Major, Allegro Emma Lindemeier, Flute by J. S. Bach (1685–1750)

Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer from the Baroque era. His is considered one of the world’s greatest composers and was also a gifted harpsichord player. Bach dedicated six concertos to the Margrave of Brandenburg (a minor German prince) in 1721. This set of concertos is commonly known as the Brandenburg Concertos. The popular fifth Concerto features violin, flute, and harpsichord.

Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 features student soloists Caddie Derby and Emma Lindemeier as well as Ramona Allen on harpsichord. Caddie, violin, is a senior attending homeschool. Emma, flute, is a senior at Black Hills High School. “As the Academy Orchestra Conductor,” says Jeff Lund, “I remember that it wasn’t so long ago that these two young ladies were in members of Academy. To see the talented student musicians they’ve become is inspiring, and serves as a reminder of why what we do at SOGO is so important. Their dedication to their craft and hard work on this piece really shines through in their performance.”

About SOGO History

In August of 2000 two ambitious local high school music students, with the help of other young musicians, their families and music teachers, created SOGO. Ample energy and a fresh vision for building a student-led organization make SOGO unique. The first season, two orchestras were created and performed three concerts each. Other performances included the sold out SOGO HO HO Brass Choir holiday concert, a free-to-the-public Messiah Sing-Along, a Children’s Concert tour to local schools, and small ensembles performing at the spring Arts Walk in downtown Olympia. Now in our sixteenth season, SOGO has 120 young musicians from over 30 different schools in three counties. The concert season includes three performances in the Washington Center, a holiday concert, and the Instrument Petting Zoo during the annual Olympia Spring Arts Walk. SOGO members are involved in weekly full orchestra rehearsals including string and wind ensembles, brass choir, chamber music, sectionals, music history, theory and composition.

Program

SOGO features a comprehensive and sequential program designed to grow student abilities in sight-reading, basic to advanced instrument pedagogy and musical artistry. These goals are achieved by playing selections from the standard orchestral repertoire. Music is selected to represent various genres, cultures and historical periods. Using this quality literature, we focus on technique, rhythm, intonation, ensemble and listening skills along with individual, section and orchestral sound development. Music selections generally increase in difficulty as the season progresses and the foundations for good orchestral playing develop within the individual and ensemble.

“Because we won’t feel comfortable until you are.”
