Carrie Rehkopf, Violin

Carrie Rehkopf has crafted an exciting career blending the best of the worlds of performing and teaching. An enthusiastic teacher, she has served as the violin professor at Central Washington University since 1990. Her students are immediately employed upon graduation, and teach across the United States as well as in Hong Kong and Japan. As first violinist of the Kairos Quartet, she has toured North America over the past 20 years. She founded and was director of the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute from 1995-2004, and of the Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum in 2005-6. In addition to numerous solo recitals and concerto performances with youth orchestras and the CWU Symphony Orchestra, she has soloed with the Everett Symphony and Philharmonic, and the Olympia, Wenatchee, Yakima, Southwest Washington and Lake Sammamish Symphonies. Before her position in higher education Ms. Rehkopf performed with various professional orchestras, including serving as Associate Principal Second of the Honolulu Symphony. She received her degrees from University of Michigan on a full tuition scholarship, studying with Camilla Wicks. She studied further in London with David Takeno. She and her cellist husband John Michel have three rambunctious boys. Despite possessing a variety of other interests, these poor children were also forced to practice their stringed instruments. They can now read Beethoven quartets with their unrepentant parents. Source: themichels.org/carrie/Carrie_Rehkopf/Bio.html

He is the founder and former director of the Internet Cello Society, a cyber-community of cellists, that shares the knowledge and joy of cello playing with enthusiasts from around the globe. During the summers, Mr. Michel performs and teaches at the Kairos Chamber Music Lyceum, Marrowstone Music Festival and the Evergreen Music Festival. He also has been co-director and faculty at the Icicle Creek Music Festival and Institute. He founded StringTeaching.com that features videos of fundamental exercises and activities for string instruction. The American String Teacher Association, Washington chapter, named him Outstanding College String Teacher in 1996. He serves on the board of the New Directions Cello Association. His formal training includes Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Michigan and the New England Conservatory. Bernard Greenhouse of the Beaux Arts Trio, Jeffrey Solow, Stefan Popov, Ned Johnson, John Lenz and Susan Ladley were his main teachers. About the Music Concerto for Violin and Cello (1887) By Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Johannes Brahms was a German composer of the Romantic period. He began playing piano at the age of seven. As a teenager, he helped support his family by performing in local inns and taverns. Brahms wrote Concerto for Violin and Cello as an attempt to mend his broken friendship with violinist Joseph Joachim. They had fallen out when a letter of support Brahms wrote to Joachim’s wife was made public in their divorce proceedings. After the premiere in 1887, Clara Schumann wrote in her diary “Joachim and Brahms have spoken to one another again after years of silence.” The soloists for the premiere were Joachim and cellist Robert Hausmann, with Brahms conducting. Cellist John Michel says the piece is a “unique concerto for violin and cello solo and full orchestra. It is a favorite of both audiences and performers. The orchestra parts share constantly in the dialogue with the soloists and the writing features Brahms’ rich and expressive harmonies.”

Pines of Rome (1924)

By Ottorino Respighi (1879-1936) A successful violinist, Respighi left Italy to travel and study. He went to Russia where he played in the St. Petersburg Opera House and studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov. Finally returning to Italy, he enjoyed a long and successful career as teacher of composition at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome. Respighi became famous through his symphonic poems titled Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome and Roman Festivals. Written in classical forms of the past, these works demonstrate his musical pictorialism constructed out of old modes and plain chants of the Renaissance. The Pines of Rome (1924) is four movements without interruption: Pines of the Villa Borghese picture children playing mimicking marching soldiers; Pines Near a Catacomb is hymn-like depicting shadows of the pine trees overhanging the entrance to the catacombs; Pines of the Janiculum reveals the moon-light night and a nightingale singing; Pines of the Appian Way begins with the distant sound of Roman soldiers marching towards the city center. As they get closer the brass usher in one of the largest crescendos ever heard in orchestral literature at the time...
