Soloists
Katherine Hales, Flute
Benjamin Albertson, Harp
“Both my mother and my older brother played the clarinet and I wanted to be different!” says SOGO flutist Katherine Hales, as she talks about why she was drawn to the flute. “My aunt played the flute ― we’re a very musical family ― and she let me borrow her old flute for the summer and I never gave it back.”
Benjamin Albertson, a senior at Olympia High School, has performed as a harpist for over nine years. He has performed with the Seattle Youth Symphony, the Olympia Symphony, the All-Northwest Orchestra, the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, and in a side-by-side performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Katherine, a senior at Timberline High School, began playing flute in fourth grade. She has been a member of SOGO for five years. Katherine will attend Western Washington University this fall and says she will “definitely” continue playing the flute. “Not only do I love music, but I feel like I’ve committed so much time that it would be a waste to just stop playing flute in college. I probably will not major in it, but there’s no way I’m going to stop in college.” Katherine says she is thankful to have the opportunity to play the Mozart concerto. “I’m very excited to play this piece and I love working with Ben. I think Ben and I both agree that the second movement is our favorite because it’s so, so beautiful.”
7
As an accomplished youth harpist, Benjamin has won the Washington Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Competition in the harp division for two consecutive years. Benjamin also enjoys playing as a chamber soloist, performing pieces such as Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro. Currently, Benjamin studies with Kippy Lou Scott and Heidi Lehwalder. Next fall, Benjamin will be studying at the prestigious Glenn Gould School of Music of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Canada in Toronto. Benjamin aspires to become a professional harpist, hoping to work in a variety of musical ventures such as chamber touring, a professorship, and an orchestral appointment.

Soloists
Karen Early Evans, Soprano
Jon K. Farmer, Tenor
Kwangsuk Ku, Baritone
Karen Early Evans sings regularly with the Seattle Opera chorus and was recently invited to sing the roles of Nurse and Trang in a workshop for Amelia, a newly commissioned work for Seattle Opera.
Jon Farmer is a Seattle-based tenor performing a variety of operatic roles around Puget Sound and beyond.
Kwangsuk Ku has been a regular chorister with the Seattle Opera Company since 2014. In the 2017-18 season, he was honored to also sing mainstage secondary roles in their productions of La Traviata, Madama Butterfly, and ll Barbiere di Siviglia. Last season he sang in the choruses of Nabucco, Le Nozze di Figaro and Der fliegende Holländer.
As an experienced musician, Jon not only sings on the operatic stage, but is also right at home performing in genres including musical theatre, rock, funk, jazz, gospel, and country.
Ms. Early Evans performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Northwest Sinfonietta as soprano soloist and has also been a soloist with Tacoma Symphony, Boise Philharmonic, Utah Symphony and Eugene Concert Choir. She has performed roles with Lyric Opera Northwest, Skagit Opera, Opera Idaho and Glimmerglass Opera.
As a spinto tenor, Jon Farmer’s career is on the rise. The last three seasons have seen Mr. Farmer perform two Rodolfos (La Boheme), two Don Josés (Carmen), as well as three Pinkertons (Madama Butterfly).
Ms. Early Evans has been honored as a Finalist in the Metropolitan National Vocal Competition as well as the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition. She was chosen as the audience favorite in both the Eleanor Lieber competition and the Bella Voce competition.
In the upcoming season, Mr. Farmer will play his first comprimario role for Seattle Opera as the Officer in Ariadne auf Naxos. Also in Mr. Farmer’s repertoire are the roles of Florestan in Fidelio, Cavaradossi in Tosca, and Lohengrin in Lohengrin.
This season he was heard in La Traviata, Katya Kabanova, and The Magic Flute. Mr. Ku is a Verdi baritone, having appeared professionally in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro as Count Almaviva, Puccini’s La Boheme as Marcelo, and Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore as Belcore. His professional classical training was completed at the Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea in 2007. As a concert artist, Kwangsuk was recently heard as the bass soloist in Handel’s Messiah, and has appeared with the Korean Music Association of Seattle in numerous venues throughout Washington, Oregon, and Montana.

Concerto for Flute and Harp (1778) By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)
Born in Salzburg, Mozart could read and write music by the age of five. By the age of six he was writing his first compositions. Harpist Benjamin Albertson says of the concerto: “The Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp is one of the few pieces in the harp repertoire from the classical era. At that time, the harp was a very different instrument, and it was quite limited in its ability to change keys. It is interesting to note that Mozart actually loathed writing for the harp. However, he was commissioned to write a harp concerto and a flute concerto. Mozart was not fond of the flute either, and so he decided to get the project over with by composing one flute and harp concerto. Despite Mozart’s bad attitude, it is still a remarkable gem. It is one of the greatest cornerstones of harp repertoire and it is an honor and delight to be performing it with SOGO.”

About the Music
Selections from Tosca (1900)
By Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa Puccini was born Italy to a large family of musicians. He wrote his first opera, Le villi, in 1884. In addition to Tosca, his other most well known operas include La Bohème (1896) and Madame Butterfly (1904). The opera Tosca by Puccini is one of his masterpieces and is one of the most popular operas in the repertoire. Simply put it is a story of Floria Tosca, a well known opera singer who is very much the insecure diva, her lover Mario Cavaradossi who is an artist, and the villainous Baron Scarpia. Scarpia, the Chief of Police supported by the Neapolitan occupiers of Rome, is the epitome of evil. Tosca is caught by her insecurities, beauty and popularity in a web of political intrigue which ends in the death of all three – Scarpia by the hand of Tosca, Cavaradossi by firing squad dictated by Scarpia and Tosca by suicide when Scarpia betrays her in an agreement that is supposed to spare Cavaradossi’s life.

Listen to the "jungle sounds" of string, brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments. SOGO musicians help kids of all ages to bow, blow, buzz and strike the instruments. Those who have attended say: 'That was cool!' 'It vibrates when I play.' 'My lips tickle.' 'I haven't played that in 20 years!' 'Can we go around again?!' The Zoo would not be possible without your support and friends at the Washington Center, R. L.
