David Hales, Clarinet

David Hales is a clarinetist hailing from Lacey, Washington. David is currently a sophomore studying chemistry at the University of Washington. He previously played with SOGO for 6 years. Audiences may remember David’s fantastic performance of Concertino for Clarinet with the Conservatory Orchestra in 2016. In addition to orchestral music, David also plays jazz, chamber, and wind band music.

Elliot Anderson, Oboe

Helene Beck, Bassoon

Helene Beck is currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Bassoon Performance at The Pennsylvania State University. Prior to Penn State, she started her bassoon studies with Francine Peterson and continued with Mrs. Peterson while pursuing a Bachelor's in Music Education at Pacific Lutheran University. In addition to performance, Helene has worked for Federal Way Public Schools as a General Music Teacher and as a Teaching Artist with SOGO. Helene is passionate about music education for every child and was a founding member of Artist Mentoring Program, a program that provides free musical training for students without the financial means necessary.

Elliot got started in music before he could remember, humming along with anything that made a sound. His lifelong musical journey has taken him far from home and set him on a path to explore the soul. As a student of oboists Karen & Alex Gheorghiu, Kyle Mustain, Melissa Peña and many others, he’s enjoyed playing the oboe for 12 years, and looks forward to many more years of making and sharing many kinds of music.

Soloists

Emma Richart, French Horn

Emma Richart began playing horn at age 11 playing in SOGO from 2001-2008. She went on to study at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, where she earned a Bachelor’s of Music in horn performance and her Masters of Music from The University of Akron in 2014. Currently, Emma performs with the South Puget Sound Community College Orchestra and maintains a private horn studio in Olympia.

Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture (1870) By Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)

Russian composer Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s most well known works include The Sleeping Beauty and holiday favorite The Nutcracker. Tchaikovsky was born in Vyatka, Russia, more than 600 miles from Moscow and St. Petersburg. He began piano lessons at age 5, but his parents groomed him for a civil service job. After working as a government clerk for several years, at age 21 he enrolled in the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Then in 1863, he moved to Moscow, where he became a professor the Moscow Conservatory. Tchaikovsky’s first work was performed in 1865. In 1878 he resigned from the Moscow Conservatory and spent the rest of his career composing. Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture is based on the Shakespearian play. It premiered in Moscow in 1870. Tchaikovsky rewrote it several times until it was finalized in 1880. Audience members may recognize the sweeping love theme within the piece from the many times it has been used in film and television as a shorthand for love at first sight.

About the Music

Sinfonia Concertante for Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, & Horn in Eb Major, K. 297b (1778) By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)

Mystery and intrigue surround the Sinfonia Concertante. Did Mozart really compose the one you are listening to today? The Köchel catalog removed it from the list of authentic works and the Oxford Dictionary notes “K297b considered doubtful attribution to Mozart by some scholars.” Robert Levin devoted an entire book to this perplexing issue without being able to resolve it conclusively. Mozart told his father that he was about to compose a concertante for flute, oboe, bassoon, and horn. The work was scheduled to be performed in Paris in 1778, but was cancelled. The manuscript was never found until it showed up in 1870, clearly not in Mozart’s hand, with a solo clarinet part replacing the flute. As a listener, your ear will tell you it is genuine Mozart, but we may never really know the truth. The music is straightforward and melodious from beginning to the end, and beautifully showcases the soloists. The first movement has hint of the Marines’ Hymn. The second movement is a romantic Adagio, and in contrast, the finale is a series of variations on a brief and simple theme.
