Overture to Nabucco (1841) By Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901)

Giuseppe Verdi was born in a small village in what is now northern Italy to a family of innkeepers. He began playing the organ at age seven and later moved to Milan to study composition. He is known for his many operas including Aida, Rigeletto, Il travatore, and La traviata. Nabucco tells the biblical story of the slavery and exile of the Hebrews under the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar. Historians disagree whether Verdi was making parallels between the ancient Hebrews and the Italians of his day living under Austrian rule. Verdi described Nabucco as "the opera with which my artistic career really begins. And though I had many difficulties to fight against, it is certain that Nabucco was born under a lucky star." "The Verdi Overture to Nabucco is a fabulous season opener that gives everyone something exciting to do, including an especially prominent opening chorale for the brass." ~ Maestro Cameron May

About the Music

Slavonic Dances (1878)

By Antonín Dvorák (1841-1904) Antonín Dvorák was born in Bohemia in what is now the Czech Republic; at the time, the region was under Austrian control. His parents were supportive of his musical talents and sent him to Prague as a boy to study piano and organ. After a series of personal and financial difficulties in the 1860s and 1870s, Dvorák was awarded the Austrian State Prize fellowship by the Austrian government in 1875. The award provided a little financial stability and brought him into contact with Johannes Brahms, who later helped Dvorák find a publisher for Slavonic Dances. The piece was originally written for piano four-hands (a duet with two musicians on one piano) but the publisher asked him to rewrite it for orchestra. Both versions were published and, along with his Moravian Duets (~1875), established his reputation as a composer. "Dvorák's Slavonic Dances are a whole lot of fun, but deceptively difficult and quite nuanced." ~ Cameron May

A Shropshire Lad (1911)

By George Butterworth (1885-1916)

Composer George Butterworth was one of a group of promising young English composers and other artists who were killed in World War I. Butterworth grew up in northern England and attended Eton College and then Oxford. Upon the outbreak of WWI, Butterworth enlisted in the Durham Light Infantry, eschewing family connections that could have helped him join a safer unit. He was soon promoted to second lieutenant and sent to the French front the following summer. He was killed in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. A Shropshire Lad was chosen for today's program to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Armistice Day. The piece is based on a collection of poems by A. E. Hausman.

About the Music

Mambo from West Side Story (1957) By Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990)

American composer Leonard Bernstein was born one hundred years ago to Russian immigrant parents. Bernstein became one of the most popular American composers of the 20th century. His best known work is the musical West Side Story, a modern interpretation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. West Side Story's Mambo is an explosion of fast-paced syncopated Afro-Cuban rhythms depicting a dance off between the rival gangs. After hearing Mambo, you will understand why orchestras around the world are celebrating Bernstein’s 100th birthday.

Congratulations to the participants of SOGO's Prelude Orchestra! Prelude Strings is SOGO’s non-audition string orchestra taught by Rebecca Gage. The program is an eightweek long free after-school program for elementary or middle school string players with one to two years experience. Prelude Strings focuses on making young musicians successful in the following areas: hand position, posture, bow technique, rhythms, sight reading, and preparation to succeed in a full orchestra setting. This is a pilot program with funding provided by Community Foundation of South Puget Sound. Students will have a performance Monday, November 5 at 6:30pm in the Washington Middle School cafeteria to show their parents, family, and friends what they have learned.
